We wanted to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with a trip that was big and exotic! We travelled to Hawaii for our 35th anniversary and needed something bigger and better. We had been to Europe previously twice before but not since 1980 and then 1989. We loved Europe!! Then we saw an advertisement on our local TV station. GRAND EUROPEAN CRUSIE ON VIKING! We contacted the travel agent advertising this trip. Francis from Travel with Us Inc. did all the leg work. From the time we boarded the plane to Europe to the time we landed back home in Edmonton we had a great experience. There were a couple of hiccups with the low water levels in a couple of areas but Viking handled everything with great professionalism. Viking never left us guessing of what to expect. it felt like these hiccups were just part of the experience. The ship was very clean, the cabin was always cleaned promptly, the food was excellent with tons of food choices, the entertainment was cultural and fun, the staff were always courteous and helpful, the tours were handled like well greased machines, the ships tour director was very knowledgeable and just a perfect personality for a job well done. Five star all the way Viking!! Read Less

The two week, Grand European River Cruise appealed to us much more than a weeklong cruise. We believed it would allow us to “settle in” without immediately counting how many days we had left. And “settle in” we did. We began in Amsterdam after a four day jet jag adjustment in Amsterdam. Embarkation was efficient and welcoming, and the wine tasting on the Aquavit Terrace was a grand introduction. We were immediately impressed with our stateroom, and the overall condition and appearance of the Viking Longboat. Exceeding both were the professionalism and warmth of the ship’s staff. The variety of food and beverage selections ensured there was something for everyone. Service was outstanding, as was the quality of the meals, from breakfast through dinner. Shore excursions offered were varied and appropriate. Guides were uniformly outstanding, from personality and communication skills to their professional knowledge. It was hard to depart in Budapest. We wanted the cruise to never end. We came with very high expectations, and they were exceeded in all respects. Read Less

Never been to Europe and never been on a river cruise. Been on several ocean cruises and really liked the “smallness” and tranquility offered by the river cruise. Selected this river cruise because of its itinerary. We were more than pleased with the quality our rooms and quality/variety of our meals. Because there were less than 200 people on board, we got to several people over our two weeks plus we got to know many of the staff. Excellent choice of tours to take at each city and the guides were all very, very good. All the tours were well-organized and the transportation to all the tours was comfortable and organized well. The evening get togethers in the loungewete both fun and informative.Breakfast choices were excellent as were the lunch choices. I also really enjoyed sitting on my veranda in the evenings when we were cruising because it was so peaceful. Service was awesome and I will do another Viking river cruise in the future!! Read Less

My wife and I saved and planned for a couple of years to take a 14 day romantic river cruise through Europe, our dream vacation. It turned out to be the worst trip we have ever taken. To summarize; 36.45 hours on a bus, 14.25 hours of free time to explore the towns visited, 10 hours of daylight cruise, includes 3 hours of Rhine valley cruise during 2 hr lunch on lower level of rented tourist day boat, changed boats after bus transfer, upper deck closed most of trip, unpack/pack 3 times, optional tours a great disappointment. Viking knew about river issues for weeks, yet no communication, rescheduling or cancelation allowed We did not board the boat until the 4th day, after docking at a gravel pit. Due to hotel stay for 1st two nights, all the busing and lunches serving 200 people at once in local restaurants, not on the boat, as advertised, we did not get full use of the "Silver Drink Package". We had to change boats 1/2 way through the trip, thus another long bus ride and lost time cruising. Most cruising at night. Ships were docked 3 deep thus we had to walk through other ship lobbies or across their upper deck and could not use our balcony as the next boat was 6 inches away. We passed through 69 locks BUYER BE AWARE, 2 weeks later, still no call from Customer Service as promised. Read Less

I highly recommend this trip. We are actually looking at doing it again but in the opposite direction. We were in the lowest level on the boat and the rooms were fantastic. Good sized closets, excellent shower, fridge, television and comfortable beds. Also very nice shower products (leave your toiletries at home) Viking is very organized from the time you embark to disembark. I would look on the television every morning to view the menus for the day so I could toss around what I was going to order as many days it was hard to chose and everything sounded so good. Chef Jan would come to the lounge every evening before dinner and give the chefs recommendations and explain how the food was prepared. Chef Jan also had a sense of humor. The lounge had music every happy hour and then again at 9:00 pm for dancing. they would change the themes nightly from Country and Western, Classical, and Rock and Roll etc. There was always something to do in the afternoons after our daily tour. There was an afternoon English tea one day and another the Chef demonstrated on how to make strudel. The waiters in the dining room and the lounge were excellent. They quickly learned your tastes to be able to recommend a wine. We purchased the Silver Spirits package in our own currency and it was well worth it. The shore excursions are well managed and there was never any line ups to wait in.We met lots of very nice people and we now have new friends. Another great thing about this trip is there are no children allowed. Viking is there to great you at the airport to take you to your hotel or boat and there at the end for your return home. My only complaint is that I gained weight due to the great food. Read Less

We had heard from our neighbors and friends about their fantastic experience with Viking River cruises and had been on our ever expanding bucket list for "to do" things. We finally did it in June of 2018. It was a 15 day Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. It turns out that the cruise turned out to be better than our extremely high expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality, service, and the worry free cruise. The crew was fantastic. It felt like we were with our loving and caring extended family. The included excursions were more than we would have asked for. It was convenient and educational having not to worry about what to do and what it is going to cost. The food was exceptional with compliments of wine and beer. We are taking another Viking Cruise on Dec 13 to Cuba & Panama, and one in May of next year. We love Viking Cruises; they meet and exceed our expectations. Read Less

We have wanted to do a european river cruise for a very long time. The Budapest to Amsterdam cruise fit many of the countries we wanted to see. Viking picked us up at the Budapest airport and bussed us to the boat, no muss, no fuss. We found our cabin decorated in what I call Swedish modern, sleek and pleasing. We both loved the bathroom, the heated floor was well beyond what we expected. There are two eateries on board: the main dining room and the Aqauvit “cafe” at the bow of the boat. We ended up eating all breakfasts and most lunches at Aquavit because it was like eating at a sidwalk cafe except the sidwalk was the river. We could eat while watching, hearing, and smelling the surrounding countryside slide by. The main dining room was a great meeting place for dinner. The large tables resulted in seatings of groups of people that started the meals as strangers and ended up as friends. Most nights the main dining room offered aregional menu in addition to the standard menu. The Regional menu offered a chance to try local cuisine that would never be available at home. In most cases it was a pleasant surprise. The on board entertainment was uniformly excellent. The two person lounge combo was thoroughly professional and had a breathtakingly broad repetoire. Viking brought in opera singers and a glassblower for unexpected types of entertainment. There were frequent historical seminars, usually as preludes for the next day’s excursions which greatly helped understand the history behind the excursion. When we booked this cruise we were aware that the Viking river cruises were ranked number one. We quickly found out why. Everyone we encountered from the Captain, to our room Steward, to the restaurant and bar serving staff, to the deckhands, were always pleasant, always had a smile, and always tried their utmost to be helpful. The crew made this a gold star cruise. The shore excursions added the local touch that we were looking for. The tour guides hired by Viking were all local residents that had deep knowlege of the subject of the tour they were leading. Each of them had their own personal spin on the subject of their tour, which kept the tours from feeling “canned”. As a consequence, just about every tour contained information that would be hard to find in a history book. Fifteen days, five countries, sixty eight locks traversed, fourteen hundred pictures taken, a million smiles. Read Less

We travelled on Viking 3 years ago and our friends have heard all the stories. 2 of them asked if we wanted to go again with them from Budapest to Amsterdam and there was no hesitation, we accepted. Our only problem was getting to Budapest, we were delayed leaving by 2 hours due to weather, and so missed our connection but we were rebooked on 2 new connections and arrived only 4 hours later than scheduled, though our luggage didn’t make it. No problem, the front desk was on it, I was on it from another angle and by morning we had our bags. The crew was fantastic. They got us robes, slippers, and toiletries as we didn’t know if/when the bags would show up. They also threw in free laundry while the bags were missing, though we didn’t need it in the end. Viking cabins are small, even the “larger” cabins, but that's OK because you are not in there except to sleep, change clothes, and shower. The lounge and sun deck are where most time is spent when on board and are more than adequate for the 190 or so guests on a full cruise. We had 178 on ours, which included a crew from Discovery Channel doing a show on our ship, to be aired in the fall. We were on the top deck of rooms and had a balcony, barely wide enough for a chair but still useable. We tried to sit at the same table every night or close by so that our wait staff could get to know us, and they did. Always friendly, efficient, and eager to get something for us. The food was very good and reasonable portions, though our chef tended to make dry cakes and other baked desserts. A fellow passenger mentioned it to him and he ignored her, blamed it on the recipes, yeah right. The bartenders in the lounge were also excellent. The waiters in the lounge were mixed. One lady and one guy were good but the others were hit or miss, frequently miss. Get to know your bartenders, you might find free wine/beer times with lunch and dinner get extended a bit and if you get them to join in late night dancing, they can be really fun and generous on your next pour of a drink at the bar. I usually don’t go for a lot of the entertainment, but it wasn’t bad and several local entertainers were brought on to give us local tastes in music or activities. There was a free walking tour included at every stop, which we found adequate. Our friends did some extra excursions that they enjoyed, but one of them was 4 hours each way on a bus so it was a long day for them whereas we relaxed after our walk and enjoyed the scenery and the quiet. We booked the trip a year in advance, and did get a more expensive room, but it was worth it. Breaking it down to a daily cost and remembering that our air fare was included, it wasn't that bad for a 2 week cruise that included excursions, food and some drinks, travel to each port, and hotel all on 1 ship. We each got a $100 voucher for another cruise, which turns into a $200 on board credit when we use it. No expiration date, transferable or refundable. You can’t go wrong. Also, nobody under 18 on board, so it's quieter than some cruises we have been on. My favorite? Cruising the Wachau Valley and the Rhine with all the castles, almost a new castle around every curve on the Rhine. DW Read Less

The cruise was very enjoyable - staff of the ship was top notch. State rooms were clean, well designed with great attention to detail. Service was excellent. Food was good. We really enjoyed our wait staff. They were friendly, helpful and all-around wonderful. Shore excursions were well organized and the local guides were, for the most part, interesting and well informed. We felt rushed at some locations such as busy museums and palaces. There was no time to stop and admire displays as the guides were rushing everyone through. The audio equipment worked well but some guides were a bit hard to understand. The biggest disappointment was no reliable WiFi on the ship. Viking should not advertise having it as it almost never worked. They really need to fix it or set the expectations correctly. The only way to get online was to find places with WiFi during port stops which wasn't always easy. Read Less

This is not a fan fair cruise, like you would get on the Giant overloaded 3500 people Cruise Ships. The good thing is that Viking does not advertise it as that. They are advertising a relaxing, do as you please and enjoy with option that you can or not take. The Cruise line can not control when the Water is high and they have to close the upper deck, just like big ships can't control hurricanes or bad weather that comes up. So get used to it. The ship has Room for up to 180 guest, they have a crew of 60, so every guest is well taken care of by the second day the staff will know your name and your likes and dislikes.that is not necessarily the case with a crew of a 1000 on the big ships . The food is excellent, with a mix of food for all cultures likes, served in the main dining room or in the Veranda lounge, again the attention to details by the Staff is second to non they all do multiple jobs in order for you to enjoy this relaxing getaway, plus free beer and wine during the assigned dinning hours. You will not get that on the giant Bucket ships, you're one of many, just a number. Are the rooms on the smaller side, yes but not any different then the big ships or some overpriced Hotels as far as that goes. No this is not a cruise for kids, take them on the big ships where there is plenty for them to do and experience. So get of your horse and enjoy the world of river cruising. As a side note I have been on 25 cruises around the world and the river cruising is the best way to relax and enjoy. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my Thoughts. Read Less

We moved into a community of active cruisers. Having never river cruised, they explained what we were missing, and the Viking Gefjon cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam proved them right! From the welcoming at the airport, outstanding hotel for our pre-cruise stay, to the final sad moment of heading home, their attention to detail, and our happiness, never diminished. Our 3rd floor balcony cabin was cozy yet comfortable and any extra request was completed by Monika with a warm smile. After a day, staff greeted us by name and so began the feeling of extended family that spread to all on board. Having only 190 passengers made dining and excursion adventures delightful! The menu was exceptional, and we particularly enjoyed the local cuisine and wine pairing. Stephan, Stephan, and Lucia were always ready with tempting options from the bar! The staff, from captain, Sam delightful cruise director, to head chef (who took us to the local outdoor market) and all others, were the best coordinated cruise team we have experienced in our 34 years of cruising! We were quite impressed with the quality of the included excursions, giving you options for additional tours, or time to cruise the beautiful towns and meet the locals (and taste the great beers)! Truthfully, it will be quite hard to return to big ships! We will certainly be enjoying more Viking cruises. Thank you Viking Gefjon for making our first river cruise spectacular ❣️ Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and we celebrated our 27th Wedding Anniversary. The shore excursions were enjoyable as well as educational. Thomas Leitner was knowledgeable and fun both prior and during the shore excursions. We enjoyed Budapest and wished we could have spent several more days exploring this beautiful city .The husband and wife duo was very relaxing to listen to in the Lounge. Several special groups were brought on board depending on the port . The ship was spotless and our bed was comfortable. We would make our bed up in the morning (military training) and somehow the cabin steward always knew we had left the room and he would come in and make the bed up to Viking standards! A thank your for arranging the distilled water for my Cpap machine. The dining service was excellent and the variety of menu choices was delightful. The wait staff was helpful and suggested choices. I think my husband's favorite dessert was the Rum Raisin ice cream! We enjoyed sitting on our veranda drinking coffee and watching the scenery. Disembarkation was outstanding. A Viking representative took us all the way through customs and got me settled in the handicap area to await wheelchair transport to the gate. I will recommend this cruise and Viking to all my friends and we are beginning to plan our next cruise with Viking. Read Less

Just got back from our 15-day Grand European cruise, and all I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!! Everything was top notch. We cruised on the newer long boat, Gefjon. The ship, crew, food, and excursions were excellent. I will give as much detail as I can. We booked about 45 days in advance and let Viking make all of our travel arrangements since we got our airfare for free. Flights went smoothly, and when we arrived in Budapest, we were greeted by 2 lovely ladies from Viking. We were quickly escorted to our private van, which took us to our ship (about 20 minute ride). We were lucky enough to arrive at 10 a.m. to our ship, and we were quickly greeted by a few staff members and shown directly to our room. ROOM: We had the veranda suite (#315), which was on the 2nd level. The room was an average size for a ship with ample storage space for clothing, large area under bed to put suitcases, a little fridge, hair dryer, TV, safe, and a few 110 American outlets. The bathroom was small, but large enough to accommodate my 6'4", 280 lb husband. The bathroom was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and make-up remover pads/Q-tips, and shower cap. Nice touch with heated floors! The veranda was small with 2 chairs and a table, but nice enough to sit out on the cool mornings with our cups of coffee watching the scenery. FOOD: Food was amazing, and of course ample! You could eat in the Aquavit Terrace for a light breakfast, lunch, or dinner - or you could eat in the main restaurant downstairs for a full course meal. We usually ate breakfast in the main restaurant, and had a choice of any breakfast dish you can imagine. If it was not out on the serving table, you could ask for it to be made for you. We rarely ate lunch on the ship, as we tried to eat on our own during our excursions to get a taste (and drink) of the local cuisine. Dinner consisted of an appetizer, main course, and dessert. There were plenty of options, and you could eat 2 main courses, 2 desserts, and 2 appetizers... or even more if you wanted. My husband is a big guy, and without even being asked, they always brought him double and asked if he would like to try something else. Beer and house wine (which changes depending on your location) is included with lunch and dinner. We did not purchase the Silver package, as we did not think it was worth it for us. You really have to drink a LOT or drink very expensive liquor/wine for it to be worth it. EXCURSIONS: We went on as many included excursions as we could, which were very informative and led by very knowledgeable guides. The extra excursions that we paid for were the Mozart concert, Salzburg, Rothenburg, the pub crawl in Cologne, and the cheese making tour. Salzburg was a bit expensive at 200 per person with a 2-hour bus ride, but as we are fans of Sound of Music, it was nice to see some of the areas where the film was made. We were a bit disappointed with Rothenburg, as we specifically went there for the Steiff teddy bears, but as it was Sunday, all the stores were closed! Had someone told us they would be closed, we would have saved our money and did the included excursion. The pub crawl was probably our favorite. We went to 4 different pubs and drank with the locals, which also included a very nice German dinner with pork, sauerkraut, potatoes, and a cheese/meat dish with dessert... and all the Kolsch beer you could drink. The cheese tour was also a bit expensive for what it was... considering you end up in the cheese store purchasing as much as you think you can buy without going over your luggage weight... and yes, the cheese was excellent! STAFF: I cannot say enough about the staff! Every one of them were amazing. By day 2, we were being called by our first names (still have no idea how they remember all the names), the wait staff knew what we liked to eat and drink... and how much. We all became friends for 15 days. I need to shout out to Meike, our cruise director, Eddie the concierge, and the bartenders and wait staff who treated us like kind and queen.. Stephan (waiter), Stephan (bartender), David, Marvin, Brando, and Lucia - you all rock! MISC: We had no problem with water levels. There were over 65 locks that we had to go through, which most of them are at night while sleeping. You never feel like you are moving like on an ocean cruise, so sea-sickness is not an issue. Entertainment is what you make of it. We had Tony the piano player (sorry for torturing you, Tony), who plays every night, and after a few drinks, we were all singing along the piano. Don't expect glitzy shows, as the ship is small and just cannot accommodate that kind of thing. There were a few nights when they had local dancers/singers come in, which was quite nice... but we usually sat in the Aquavit and played board games or just talked with our new forever friends. Honestly, you will be so tired from the day's activities, you will just want to relax by the time you are finished dinner. The average age of the passengers seemed to be 55+. Although we were one of the youngest couples, we certainly had to "keep up" with our fellow passengers who were very young at heart. This cruise is really not for the person who cannot walk or handle many cobblestone pathways, and even some climbing up steep hills (on some excursions) to castles and palaces. Again, you can make the trip your own. Many times we diverted from the included tours and went off on our own.. and if possible, we would take public transportation back to the ship or a taxi (the staff will give you excellent directions on returning). In summary, I can honestly say, this was the most memorable experience we have ever had. We made some life-long friends and are even talking about a reunion for another trip. I really do not have one bad thing to say. Can't wait for our next trip!! Read Less

We made several friends on the voyage. Sleeping Cabin was a little tight, however comfortable. Housekeeping seemed to go out of their to maintain everything. During the trip the wife and I Celebrate our 43rd Anniversary. Both the Housekeeping and Dining Crew made it Special Occasion. The main topic of the Vacation was the sightseeing of the Danude River and it's associate water ways. This to include the many stops at cities and landmarks. Excursions at all included plus other at additional charge. The ones we took were really something special in both the viewing and the tour guide's shared knowledge and stories associated with the location site. Amsterdam was a great starting point and the tour added so much information that we would never have learned on our own. The ship was wonderfully clean and well maintained. The cabin was a bit snug but was a welcoming place to come back to each day. The balcony was a great addition providing a great place for close up viewing of many locks and life along the way. The food was exceptional and always good. The service was excellent all around. The churches, castles, towns and countryside were amazing and are fondly remembered still today. Itinerary - it took us through the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Our room was conformable, maybe a little smaller than the usual hotel room, but everything we needed was there, including bath supplies. We had a room with a veranda which allowed us to sit and watch the scenery as we sailed. The room was cleaned and freshened two or three times a day. In fact the whole ship was always being cleaned and kept in pristine condition. There were only 150 passengers which made for an intimate trip. The guests were mostly polite, congenial, not "party animals" making for an enjoyable atmosphere aboard ship. The food was excellent - many selections at all meals, with snacks always available (although we didn't need any extra foods) and the staff were the best I have encountered - well trained, polite, attentive to our every needs. The walking tours of the cities we visited allowed us to discover culture and history. The tours were relaxed. We would certainly recommend Viking River Cruises and plan to travel with them again soon. Read Less

My husband surprised me with this cruise to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. A Rhine River/Danube River cruise was at the top of my wish list, but I never dreamed that this would become a reality. The whole experience was magical for me. I didn't want to sleep. I didn't want to miss out on what surprise might be around the next bend in the river. I wanted to soak in every moment, often sitting on our veranda watching the ripples on the river in the moonlight, as our ship silently made its way to the next port-of-call. The shore excursions were well organized with friendly guides who gave us complete history lessons about the town we were visiting and its surrounds. Every guide spoke beautiful English with a sense of humor, even though English was not their first language. All staff were courteous and friendly and it wasn't too long before they were calling us by name. We were always greeted with a smile. The food and service was 5 star. The evening entertainment, be it an instrumental concert, an operatic performance, quiz games and fun team nights, or relaxing to beautiful easy-listening piano music, was enjoyable and filled with laughter. I sometimes sat on the Aquavit Terrace at the end of a very full day, and listened to the piano, the cool breeze softly muting the notes. I loved retreating to our cabin of an evening, getting hot cups of tea from the service area on our way, and enjoying the view of the river from the veranda together. I can't wait another 30 years before I "sail" again. It won't be long. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had heard good reports about Viking, and we also liked the length and destinations of this cruise. We had been to several of the stops along the way before, but we wanted to return to see them again. The cruise exceeded all that we had heard. The service, the staff, the food, the itinerary, and every other detail were absolutely perfect. When river conditions (high water) altered our normal itinerary, Viking handled the logistics seamlessly so that we did not miss anything and they did it without any inconvenience to us. For those who are not sure about a cruise, I would say several things. First, the ride was smooth as glass - no worries about seasickness. Second, it was wonderful to see so much while only unpacking once, unlike bus/train tours between hotels with multiple packing/unpacking episodes. Third, we really enjoyed getting to know other people on the ship - it was small enough that you could really do this. Fourth, the ship was very comfortable and virtually noiseless. Nothing but positive reviews! Took the Grand European itinerary. The ship, the crew, the food, the ports, the included tours...all fantastic. Stayed in lowest cabin category possible and it was just fine. Cabin a bit small but an amazing bathroom that easily accommodated two woman and all their "stuff"! Two special dietary needs (a vegetarian and someone gluten free) were beautifully handled. Onboard programs/entertainment was delightful. Loved the personal quiet sets that each passenger had for shore excursions. Made it so easy to hear every word the tour guide had to say. On that note, the local guides that met our groups at each port were very good and knew their stuff. We were lucky and had good weather and rivers that were 100% passable. Never had to do any of the dreaded "ship swaps"! Our cruise director, Meike, was charming, classy and well informed. Tony, the pianist each day, was wonderful. Bar/dining room staff (shoutout to Georgi, Stephen and Laaaaadies-man) was solicitous and made you feel like you were Dining in a 5 star restaurant each day. Housekeeping were right on point (thanks, Nenad!). One additional thing...we were two girlfriends traveling together. It was a very comfortable situation and we never felt like we were the odd men out! Again, can't rate our experience high enough. Have booked another Viking cruise in May of 2017. Can't wait!! We had been talking about taking a river cruise for several years and when we went to a travel expo and were presented with this cruise we went for it. One of the best decisions we have ever made! Every thing was wonderful, from the greeting at the airport to the transfer to the airport at the end of our cruise. The cabin was very comfortable. The food was fabulous. We took all the shore excursions we could and every single one was fantastic. The highlight of the cruise was arriving in Budapest at night. What a beautiful city. What truly separated this cruise from all other trips we have taken was the entire staff and the service they provided. What amazed me was how well they served 180 people sitting down to dinner at the same time. They always did the little things that makes great service world class service. We had a great, great time and are looking forward to another river cruise really soon. Read Less

Went on the new Viking Gefjon on the Danube Waltz. Loved the locations where we stopped, loved the bus tours around the cities, loved just sitting on the deck when the younger travelers went on other explorations, food was excellent, love the free wine or beer at lunch and dinner, personnel from tour guide to cabin attendant were above expectation. It was my fourth Viking Cruise and already looking for another seasonal special. Enjoyed having an elevator to help go up and down steps. Very comfortable in all areas from the reception area to the lounge. Would like to have the lounge camera show the entertainment instead of just the piano and when the tour guide showed slides would like to have seen them on our TV instead of just hearing her talk. Other cruises had a wider view of the lounge area and we could see the entertainment from the comfort of our room especially late in the evening when old people like us like to relax. Loved the optional excursions from the ship especially when lots of us have traveled with Viking before and have seen many of the locations we stop at. But always something new to see. The captain was very visible and was at many of the occasions and always welcomed people to see his control tower and had answers to all of our questions. It is always amazing how we go through so many locks up and down the river and many people are fassinated by this process Read Less

Just finished the Grand European cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest for our 25th anniversary. Excellent, excellent, excellent! Viking does it up perfectly. They are so organized and all the shore excursions are planned out to include every detail and timed with precision. The excursions include local tour guides so you really get a feel for each locale that you are in. You can do as much or as little as you want to. Staff is super personable. Definitely do the optional excursions for beer tasting in Cologne, Germany, bus trip to Salzburg, Austria, and wine tasting in Krems, Austria. Another great part of the Viking experience is that they let you bring your own wine on board. Buy local wine from each port you are in and then drink it that night in the lounge. The trip itself is over 1,200 miles on various waterways and includes going thru 68 locks while on the Rhine River, Main River, Main-Danube canal (with aqueducts), and then onto the Danube River. They make sure that the very scenic parts of the rivers are cruised during the day for great photo opportunities with the many castles along the rivers. We chose to do the optional extension at Budapest at the end and it was well worth it. Budapest is very walkable and has a relaxed vibe. We also lucked out with timing since it was their Spring Festival while we were there. Incredible local food and crafts. Our suitcases were packed! Don't miss the tokaji tasting at the Faust Winery in the castle district! Free beer and wine during lunch and dinner also help out! Many great selections, including some local ones. Food was very tasty with a local flair. They even opened up the ship's kitchen one night for all the guests to see. If you cruise on the Gefjon, make sure to get to know the bartender Stefan...he ROCKS! Read Less

This is our 5th river cruise with Viking. Captain Marcel Stephan is clearly a great leader and inspired his staff to deliver friendly and attentive service. We could sense the camaraderie amongst the staff and everybody seemed happy to be there and taking care of the passengers. Captain Stephan was constantly in attendance at all events, at each port, Viking presentations, even helping his crew unload luggage. The longship was new and well-designed. Each of the ports was beautiful and interesting. The local tour guides were knowledgeable and articulate, with a good sense of humour. The weather was exceptional, warm and most times sunny. The service and the food were consistently superior. The staff were friendly and cheerful, which added to our overall enjoyment. The restaurant staff welcomed us like we were VIP's. Even the Chef came out and chatted to us. Each menu item was well-prepared and served to us at just the right pace. It was a gastronomical delight. We would HIGHLY recommend this cruise. Read Less

a bit hesitant to go on a river cruise. Seen the commercials-- they looked nice but you never know. From the moment we boarded the ship we were NEVER disappointed in anything! The crew could not do enough for everyone. There was not one thing that we could want for that they could not do for each passenger--well maybe the weather :) The ship was immaculate- bathroom spotless, under the bed not one dust ball or piece of dirt. restaurant was efficient and professional while maintaining a level of warmth to the passengers. Activities were available at different levels of ability. There were slow tours if you did not want to run around like crazy and enjoy the scenery. Faster ones for the more adventurous who tried to cram in as much as they could in a short time frame. We took a cabin with a veranda - which I recommend. Even though the weather was at best fair-- we did get to open the door and get fresh air and watch the beautiful castles along the river go by. We are trying to think about our next trip when we save up some money!\ Read Less
