Just got back from our 15-day Grand European cruise, and all I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!! Everything was top notch. We cruised on the newer long boat, Gefjon. The ship, crew, food, and excursions were excellent. I will give as much detail as I can. We booked about 45 days in advance and let Viking make all of our travel arrangements since we got our airfare for free. Flights went smoothly, and when we arrived in Budapest, we were greeted by 2 lovely ladies from Viking. We were quickly escorted to our private van, which took us to our ship (about 20 minute ride). We were lucky enough to arrive at 10 a.m. to our ship, and we were quickly greeted by a few staff members and shown directly to our room. ROOM: We had the veranda suite (#315), which was on the 2nd level. The room was an average size for a ship with ample storage space for clothing, large area under bed to put suitcases, a little fridge, hair dryer, TV, safe, and a few 110 American outlets. The bathroom was small, but large enough to accommodate my 6'4", 280 lb husband. The bathroom was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and make-up remover pads/Q-tips, and shower cap. Nice touch with heated floors! The veranda was small with 2 chairs and a table, but nice enough to sit out on the cool mornings with our cups of coffee watching the scenery. FOOD: Food was amazing, and of course ample! You could eat in the Aquavit Terrace for a light breakfast, lunch, or dinner - or you could eat in the main restaurant downstairs for a full course meal. We usually ate breakfast in the main restaurant, and had a choice of any breakfast dish you can imagine. If it was not out on the serving table, you could ask for it to be made for you. We rarely ate lunch on the ship, as we tried to eat on our own during our excursions to get a taste (and drink) of the local cuisine. Dinner consisted of an appetizer, main course, and dessert. There were plenty of options, and you could eat 2 main courses, 2 desserts, and 2 appetizers... or even more if you wanted. My husband is a big guy, and without even being asked, they always brought him double and asked if he would like to try something else. Beer and house wine (which changes depending on your location) is included with lunch and dinner. We did not purchase the Silver package, as we did not think it was worth it for us. You really have to drink a LOT or drink very expensive liquor/wine for it to be worth it. EXCURSIONS: We went on as many included excursions as we could, which were very informative and led by very knowledgeable guides. The extra excursions that we paid for were the Mozart concert, Salzburg, Rothenburg, the pub crawl in Cologne, and the cheese making tour. Salzburg was a bit expensive at 200 per person with a 2-hour bus ride, but as we are fans of Sound of Music, it was nice to see some of the areas where the film was made. We were a bit disappointed with Rothenburg, as we specifically went there for the Steiff teddy bears, but as it was Sunday, all the stores were closed! Had someone told us they would be closed, we would have saved our money and did the included excursion. The pub crawl was probably our favorite. We went to 4 different pubs and drank with the locals, which also included a very nice German dinner with pork, sauerkraut, potatoes, and a cheese/meat dish with dessert... and all the Kolsch beer you could drink. The cheese tour was also a bit expensive for what it was... considering you end up in the cheese store purchasing as much as you think you can buy without going over your luggage weight... and yes, the cheese was excellent! STAFF: I cannot say enough about the staff! Every one of them were amazing. By day 2, we were being called by our first names (still have no idea how they remember all the names), the wait staff knew what we liked to eat and drink... and how much. We all became friends for 15 days. I need to shout out to Meike, our cruise director, Eddie the concierge, and the bartenders and wait staff who treated us like kind and queen.. Stephan (waiter), Stephan (bartender), David, Marvin, Brando, and Lucia - you all rock! MISC: We had no problem with water levels. There were over 65 locks that we had to go through, which most of them are at night while sleeping. You never feel like you are moving like on an ocean cruise, so sea-sickness is not an issue. Entertainment is what you make of it. We had Tony the piano player (sorry for torturing you, Tony), who plays every night, and after a few drinks, we were all singing along the piano. Don't expect glitzy shows, as the ship is small and just cannot accommodate that kind of thing. There were a few nights when they had local dancers/singers come in, which was quite nice... but we usually sat in the Aquavit and played board games or just talked with our new forever friends. Honestly, you will be so tired from the day's activities, you will just want to relax by the time you are finished dinner. The average age of the passengers seemed to be 55+. Although we were one of the youngest couples, we certainly had to "keep up" with our fellow passengers who were very young at heart. This cruise is really not for the person who cannot walk or handle many cobblestone pathways, and even some climbing up steep hills (on some excursions) to castles and palaces. Again, you can make the trip your own. Many times we diverted from the included tours and went off on our own.. and if possible, we would take public transportation back to the ship or a taxi (the staff will give you excellent directions on returning). In summary, I can honestly say, this was the most memorable experience we have ever had. We made some life-long friends and are even talking about a reunion for another trip. I really do not have one bad thing to say. Can't wait for our next trip!! Read Less

We had the time of our lives. Even though one of us was limited in walking abilities, due to an injury, the staff did their utmost to make sure we both had an enjoyable experience. There is even a "Gentle" walking tour group at every stop, for those who have limited abilities. We were shown special attention to make sure we both were taken care of. We both felt like royalty. When one of us got sick and stayed in the cabin through two dinner services, the staff of the restaurant made sure that he received a full hot meal, delivered by the restaurant Manager. We were totally impressed with the entire staff and crew. The shipboard entertainment was first-class, with shows by such professionals that I would compare them to highly paid stage performers. The food on the ship was outstanding. I cannot praise the chef and his team enough, especially after seeing the tight quarters that they have to prepare the meals. Truly a "Trip of a Lifetime"! The staff was excellent. Always present but not overwhelming with their presence. The food was delicious. Enjoyed the ports. The support staff at the airport was amazingly helpful. Special recognition to our Program Director, Minka and to wait person Atilla! Have heartily recommended this cruise line to many of our friends! This was our first Riverboat cruise and had many preconceptions. Thought the activity level would not be enough to feel engaged all the time. That was not the case at all. The individuals who served as guides in each port were for the most part, engaging. Enjoyed many of the little asides they provided. Enjoyed the walks around the towns and ports. Enjoyed the regional foods inserted into the menu port to port. Felt the sites picked out for our tours were well thought out. While traveling with friends, a medical emergency occurred. The assistance in dealing with this incident couldn't have been better. Our program director facilitated medical services. It was smooth sailing from then on! Read Less

We chose Grand European as our first river boat cruise because we wanted to experience the Danube and Rhine rivers and their ports of call. The Gefjon ship's cabins, dining, and service was fabulous! Our room steward, Nichola, kept our cabin spotless! Chef Antonio's meals were AWESOME! Loved the variety of dishes which included local cuisine! David, Brian and Elmer, our dining servers, were MAGNIFICENT! They were very attentive to our every need, friendly and professional! Loved, loved the ports and shore excursions! All of our local tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly! Mika, our program director, was very informative and helpful. Loved using the quiet boxes on our excursions so we wouldn't miss what the guide was saying! Our concierge, Eddy, was fantastic! He was able to get us Anne Frank Huis tickets! Embarkation and disembarkation were very smooth! No problems whatsoever! One of the best features of the cruise was that it felt intimate with only 160 passengers versus 5,000 on an ocean cruise! Was it more Expensive....Absolutely No Question, but was it the BEST~~~~ABSOLUTELY YES! Service~~Available Offering both On & Off the Ship~~Food~~Activities~~WOW is all I can say! We, SIX of us that traveled together, also enoyed the Beer and Wine offerings with Lunch and Dinner too! ALL the Crew was just FANTASTIC and we even interacted with Captain Mercel and other crew members also. Learning about The River Cruise Ship, like the Gefjon, we were on was very interesting too. We took over 1,600 pictures and the other 2 couples took about the same at all the ports we went to. One of the cousins even made an Hour and twenty min. DVD collection of all our photo's together with music! It was absolutely fantastic! We will book another River Cruise with Viking for sure!! And HOPING the same First Cousins and their spouses go with us again also! Read Less

Loved everything about this River cruise BUT what made it "so special" was the warmth and competence of both the program director Stella Jansen (the best we have seen in decades of cruising along multiple cruise lines) and Captain Marcel Stephan. These two individuals epithimize what "customer care" is all about. Having been an senior executive myself I would be so proud to have these two individuals at the head of my businesses. We can only hope the Mr. Hagen (Viking's CEO) recognizes these folks as the real "ambassadors" they are. Thank you to all of the staff of Viking Gefjon in making this a cruise to remember for years to come. Believe us "it was ALL good" form cabin, public spaces, super dining and basically dealing with folks who care. Captain Stephan (along with his Forst Officers) ran the ship as if we're their own and all are very accommodating in answering any question. Tessa Jansen gets a true "10" from both of us. WOW.......We've been "LOOKING" at a Viking River Cruise for YEARS, but never pulled the "TRIGGER" because of the PRICE!! SO.......2 First Cousins and their spouses and my wife and I talked about doing this together and we even had 3 meetings to discuss this Grand European River Boat Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest in the summer of 2015. Well on June 2nd, 2016, this "DREAM" became a REALITY for ALL of us. Talk about having a FANTASTIC Time on the Viking Gefjon would be difficult to put into words other than JUST DO IT!!! IF you want to be PAMPERED, then Viking will MEET your expectations for sure with Service, FOOD and Excursions!! The Food was 5 Star.....the Wine and Beer with Lunch and Dinner was Great too! The deserts.......well I GAINED 9 lbs on this trip so READ between the lines!! ALL the ports and tours were very interesting and informative also. We had a cabin that the widow slid open, but no balcony which was fine as we really weren't in the cabin that often. There are so many COMFORTABLE places to relax on this ship that this really wasn't an issue. We have always had a Balcony or better on all our Ocean cruises, but this was OK. All I can say is that this River Cruise really SPOILED US as now we probably won't want to go on the Ocean again...LOL!! PS: I did book a 7 night Caribbean Cruise for this coming November. Read Less

Nothing but positive reviews! Took the Grand European itinerary. The ship, the crew, the food, the ports, the included tours...all fantastic. Stayed in lowest cabin category possible and it was just fine. Cabin a bit small but an amazing bathroom that easily accommodated two woman and all their "stuff"! Two special dietary needs (a vegetarian and someone gluten free) were beautifully handled. Onboard programs/entertainment was delightful. Loved the personal quiet sets that each passenger had for shore excursions. Made it so easy to hear every word the tour guide had to say. On that note, the local guides that met our groups at each port were very good and knew their stuff. We were lucky and had good weather and rivers that were 100% passable. Never had to do any of the dreaded "ship swaps"! Our cruise director, Meike, was charming, classy and well informed. Tony, the pianist each day, was wonderful. Bar/dining room staff (shoutout to Georgi, Stephen and Laaaaadies-man) was solicitous and made you feel like you were Dining in a 5 star restaurant each day. Housekeeping were right on point (thanks, Nenad!). One additional thing...we were two girlfriends traveling together. It was a very comfortable situation and we never felt like we were the odd men out! Again, can't rate our experience high enough. Have booked another Viking cruise in May of 2017. Can't wait!! Every thing was wonderful, from the greeting at the airport to the transfer to the airport at the end of our cruise. The cabin was very comfortable. The food was fabulous. We took all the shore excursions we could and every single one was fantastic. The highlight of the cruise was arriving in Budapest at night. What a beautiful city. What truly separated this cruise from all other trips we have taken was the entire staff and the service they provided. What amazed me was how well they served 180 people sitting down to dinner at the same time. They always did the little things that makes great service world class service. We had a great, great time and are looking forward to another river cruise really soon. Read Less

The crew informed us were the dining and lounging areas were . A very nice luncheon was ready for us. All the meals were excellent as well as the service. Entertainment and activities were pretty good. The shore excursion were also excellent as well as the guides and the buses. The staff were all very professional and anticipated your every need--from the wonderful cabin attendant to the captain. The included shore excursions were led by local guides who did an excellent job of giving you an overview of the city, local history and culture. Our cruise on Viking River Cruise was all that we expected and more. We chose the least expensive cabin and were pleasantly surprised. It was small but very cozy and comfortable. We had all the amenities that we would have received in a far more expensive room. Our dining arrangements, our entertainment and activities were all first class. The service we received was always delivered with a care and a friendly smile. The tour guides in every port were excellent. When our dock was not within walking distance of the center of town, there was always a shuttle available. We did not book any of the optional excursions and were quite pleased that we didn't. The included tours gave us an overview of each town or city we stopped in and our dock location or shuttle gave us the ability to visit the places we desired easily. As an example when in Vienna we wanted to ride the famous ferris wheel. We were able to walk to the park, ride the ferris wheel and stroll back on a beautiful spring day taking in the local neighborhood. Our concierge, Eddie, always had suggestions and answers as to where we could go and how we could get there. I can't finish this review without commenting on all the staff on our ship. From the tour director, Dawn, who was knowledgeable, friendly and very talented to Monika, the girl who cleaned our room daily (and I have to add it sparkled and so did she), the staff was always pleasant, courteous and helpful. More than anything we were always greeted with a friendly smile wherever we went on the ship. Read Less

The hardest part of our entire trip was the US to Europe flight and extremely long layover. But once the Viking staff member met us upon arrival, everything from that point on went as smoothly as we ever could have imagined. The ship's Captain, Director and staff were outstanding. They promptly and cheerfully responded to our every question or request for assistance. The food was superb, and every meal was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Our stateroom was quite roomy and well appointed and the views from our balcony were breathtaking. The onboard features including the ship's tour, the cookie making demonstration, the glass blowing exhibit, and the classical music concert were delightful. Though the evening entertainment was limited to a piano bar, the pianist was talented and quite entertaining. The Excursions and local guides were excellent. We had lots of choices and ample free time in virtually every port. And upon arrival back at the ship, we were greeted with either a cocktail, an amuse bouche, or a sweet treat. The welcome reception, Captain's Reception, and farewell reception were perfect opportunities to meet new friends or reconnect with friends from previous Viking cruises. We plan to keep in touch with a number of the new friends we made on this cruise. It is no exaggeration to say that every detail of the cruise from beginning to end was perfectly planned and flawlessly executed. We were so impressed, we have already scheduled our next cruise. This was our second cruise, first with Viking. We did the Heart of Germany cruise for the holidays. Pros: The ship was amazing. Brand new this season. Clean and modern. The service on the boat was out of this world. The crew was insanely committed to ensuring that all the passages had an amazing time. I don't think that their was a single time we walked by them without one of them asking if we need anything or saying hi. The captain was true leader among them. He was always working. Weather it was carrying luggage to the rooms, putting out the gangway, or just ensuring all the guest were having a great time. We saw and talked to him very day, amazingly nice guy. The service staff was hard working and some of the best I have ever come across. Everyone from the cabin stewards to the servers in the restaurants. Can't say enough good things about the staff. The itinerary was great, all the included tours were informational and well run, and the tour guides were knowledgeable and kind. Those you do have to take some buses, some trip were up to 1.5 hours ride from the boat, Viking has their own fleet of luxury motor coaches with bathrooms and comfortable seats. We literally just had to choose which tour we wanted to go on (Short, regular, or extended) and they did all the work. There is plenty of free time in each destination for exploring on your own. There were little to no kids on the boat. Few teenagers, but they were all VERY well behaved. We got to meet great people from all around the world. The ship felt like a small community that we didn't want to leave by the end of our adventure! The food can be summed up with one word, SPECTACULAR. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were tasty and filling. VERY filling, I think I gained 15lbs. on this trip. Cons: There were a few cons, small details. The top deck was never able to be open due to the fact that on the Main river in Germany there were over 140 bridges that we passed under during our cruise. Some as low as a couple inches from the top of the boat. There is not fitness facility on the boat and the only track was on the top deck which was closed. The internet on the ship is slow, but it was fine for us. We were trying to disconnect from the world anyways. Summary: Overall I would highly recommend this cruise line and the Heart of Germany itinerary. Germany is a gorgeous country that everyone should experience once in their life. We have already booked out next cruise, 15 days in the Baltic! We look forward to travel with them again. Read Less

because the water level was low, we had to transfer half way through the cruise to another boat located on the other side of shallow water. The transfer was excellent The tour director stayed with us on both boats and he was terrific. The boats were essentially identical so the accommodations were the same and good. The Fall time was cold and we couldn't use our veranda because of the chilliness as well as we were locking through the lock system many times when we had down time, usually in the evening. The meals were similar and there was plenty of food and wine. Some geographic variation in the menus was appreciated, although, not as tasty as I had anticipated. The side trips were amazing, lots of walking tours and the guides were unique, informative and entertaining. The extra tours were well worth the extra money. Bus rides were in comfortable buses which were expertly driven, especially the windy, hilly and narrow roads. The staff. Both boat's staff were friendly. The staff on the first boat were well organized, efficient and I am grateful to have had their service. The staff on the second boat were disorganized, did a lot of running around, never could get the dinners out, tables cleared, coffee refilled, desserts got mixed up and a lot of visibly standing around. Housekeeping had to return to finish up something left undone. Both boat staff I repeat were friendly and seemed motivated, just not well led on the second boat: Gefjon. Read Less

We just got back from an amazing River Cruise through Europe with Viking that was almost perfect. The ship was only 3 months old and looked it, nice and shiny. The crew could not have treated us any better ! They were great ! My Wife and I aren't very fussy when it comes to food, it was good, but, I can see where a "Foodie" type person might complain. The breakfast buffet was great and the lunches were fine either in the Main Dining Room or the Aquavit Terrace. The dinners in the Dining Room were fine, but, just not special. The portions were small, fine for us, but, if you're big eater you'll need a double order. The complimentary Wine for Lunch & Dinner were great, no complaints at all. Those people that have complained about the Wine don't seem to realize that the Wine is coming from a completely different area than you're probably not use to. You may not like it, but, it's not because it's "bad" you're just not familiar with the taste from the Wine from this area. Our Balcony Room was great. A little small, but, it was well organized and once we emptied our luggage everything fit. The shower was plenty big enough for us and overall the bathroom was perfect. Our balcony was a little small, but, again, perfect for us. Our Room Steward was great. We were hardly in our room, but, the TV had several choices and the WiFi worked ok most of the time. We have travelled a lot in the past and have done the Moscow to St Petersberg River Cruise in the past, but, we had never been to anywhere we went on this Cruise. We're in our 60s, but, we're pretty active. We saw and did everything we could. We went on every excusion offered by Viking and as many optional excursions as we could fit in. When we we'ren't on a Tour and were cruising down the different Rivers we were on top of the ship or in the front of the ship in the Aquavit Lounge. We literally did not want to miss a thing ! Even at night there were things to see along the way. We hated to go to bed at night afraid we would miss some amazing views. If you couldn't walk into town, the Buses that took you on our excursions were all 1st class and all of them had restrooms. If you wanted to see the sights and learn about what you were seeing the opportunity was there. With one exception all of the guides on the excursions were very knowledgeable. Some of the optional excursions Costs were a little high, but, worth it. The Mozart - Strauss Concert in Vienna was great ! Not what I would normally listen to, but, it wasn't just a concert, it was a very entertaining show ! We had a problem in the middle of the Cruise. The River was too low for us to continue after Nuremberg. So before we left on our Tour we packed our luggage and after the Tour we were bussed to Passau where our luggage was waiting in the same room in another new Viking Ship the Ve. We just switched Ships with the people on the Ve that couldn't go upstream because of the low water. It was flawless. Now for a couple of minor problems. Our optional Tour in Cologne for 44 Euros was advertised at 4 hours to the Augustusburg Palace(which was great) and then the Falkenlust Hunting Lodge and their baroque gardens. The Hunting Lodge and gardens were closed. The Guide said, "Oh, the Lodge wasn't that great afterall" ! we were back in 3 hours. When I talked to Carl West the Cruise Director, he wasn't very sympathetic, "oh, ok, that's good to know for the future". But, didn't offer me anything other than sympathy. I organized a group of 9, we spent close to $75,000. At the end of the Cruise when I asked for a cab to the Castle Hilton($10 Euros) I think that would have been nice compensation, but, no that was against Viking's rules. But, yet earlier Carl had screwed up our Bus back from Regensburg to Passau and had to get a cab for 2 for a 4 hour trip ! I think that cost considerably more than $10 Euros. The other thing that is quite a concern. There is virtually no security on board. We were alble to come and go as we pleased. We really only had a room key. In Passau there was an older Viking Ship docked not far from us. We walked right on and walked around taking pictures with not one Viking person asking us for anything. Then, the last night we were in Budapest, our friend's daughter had a room to herself and at 11 o'clock she was asleep when a couple burst into her room and started yelling at her, "what are you doing in our room, get out, get out" ! We were docked next to another Viking Ship and we were on the inside, but, the Captain took our ship for a little evening tour to see the lights of Budapest and when we came back we parked on the outside. When the couple came back, they thought their ship were still on the outside and went to my friend's daughter's room, which they thought was their room and their key didn't work so they went to the Desk and the Desk personnel gave them a new key without checking any identification ! In this day and age I can't believe Security is so lax ! Anyway, other than that a Great Cruise ! Read Less

We were one of the ships that was caught up in the low water problems. The change to another ship was handled so well we could not believe. It was amazing - so smooth, whilst we heard guests from another cruise line that there trip had to be stopped and guests had the option to fly home or stay in a hotel and get bused every day to another destination. We were lucky that we booked VIKING. During the change we saw some more of the countryside, got a nice lunch in local restaurant and after the change all was run as scheduled we did not miss any of the promised tours until the end of our trip. Have been with others cruise operators . Will most certainly do another cruise with Viking. As an operator they are very well organised and know how to look after their passengers. Would recommend this trip to all. If i had to name one thing that made the cruise so great it would be the entire staff on board. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and enjoy the cruise. Thank you to all staff on board Viking Gefjon 5th to 15th May 2016 Read Less

We were on the second trip of the Viking Gefjon, and also had room 205. Our trip was totally different than Ralphster. Due to high water, the ship was stuck at Kehl/Strasbourg for 5 nights. Each day, we would gather at 7 pm to hear what was going to happen the next day. Some days it was close to what the itinerary promised. Most of the time it wasn't. Each day there was a 20 minute walk to get on a bus to go somewhere with a church and a market square. No other options. There were problems with the bus tours, as buses were late, got lost, and had tour guides who couldn't work headsets. We even had a bus driver who was texting while driving on the Autobahn. The last night, we got our hopes up, as we were told the ship would be leaving at 10 pm and we would at least get to cruise one time. 10 pm came and went and the ship didn't move. The next day, we were bused to the middle Rhein where we had an hour and a half boatride. The worst part of the ride was that 2 other Viking Longships passed us - taking the cruise vacation we were supposed to have. I'm not blaming the ship's crew. But they were very new and inexperienced, and did not know how to calm people down, much less try to lighten a very disappointing vacation. Dinner service took over 2 hours each night, not that we had anything else to do. Being handed warm mineral water as we left the ship each day didn't improve peoples moods. We observed another ship who was in the same predicament as we were, docked a little down from us. Their crew was outside greeting them whenever they returned from a bus trip. The sad part is, I could have really enjoyed this trip. We took it to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and we were eagerly looking forward to a nice vacation. We enjoyed ( for the most part) the open seating and getting to know other passengers. The room was nice, even though only one person could cross the foot of the bed at a time. I appreciated the night light in the bathroom. The much talked about heated bathroom floor didn't work. The movie selection was adequate, but not long enough. The balcony would have been lovely if the ship moved at all. I understand that flooding occurs often on the rivers that these ships travel. By now, management should have devised alternatives for their guests that didn't involve continually waiting to see what the next day would bring. If the ship had been proactive, it could have gone much further downstream when the flooding started and thus not gotten stuck at a point of no movement. Alternate tours and options should have been provided. On board entertainment could have been upgraded from accordion players. More than one free drink would have helped. When we returned, there was a 25% credit towards a future cruise emailed to us, as if 75% of the trip went well and 25% didn't. I don't know if I am going to use it. I'm not recommending this cruiseline. I think the company has grown too fast and not given enough thought to the problems that will occur. They have concentrated on expansion and not on customer relations. Even the customer service rep I talked to sounded tired of it all. Read Less
