Visiting Parts of Europe that i had not visited before sounded very exciting. Unfortunately the cruise up the Danube was not as enjoyable as i had hoped. The food and service on the Freya was excellent, but the view from the boat at some of the stops was disappointing. For example at one of the stops the view from our cabin was a concrete batching plant. Other stops were usually not up to the standard of the first night in Budapest, meaning we usually stopped some distance from the town or city and needed to take a taxi to go into town. Even then the stops were for a short time as the boat was to be moved within a few hours. I also thought that Viking should describe the distance of walks from the bus that picked us up at the boat to the attraction that was the destination in more explicit words. For example, a walking tour described as moderate means different things to different people depending on that persons fitness level. Viking would do better if it said 1/4 of a mile instead of moderate walk for example. One of our tour guides was so engrossed with describing the tour details that i had to interrupt his dialog to point out that an elderly lady in our group was so far behind the group that we had to wait some time before she caught up. I had plans to visit a restaurant in Regensburg with friends for dinner and before that visit the BMW factory. Unfortunately i was told by staff that the boat would be leaving port in the afternoon so I cancelled the BMW factory tour and had lunch in Regensburg. Viking refused to reimburse me for the BMW tour. I could point out other things that Viking could improve but i am tired, I left a similar review while onboard I would be surprised if Viking ever contacted me to follow up my review. All in all a pleasant experience but not worth the money I paid. Read Less

This is the perfect way to tour multiple cities in Europe without having to pack and unpack at different hotels. Every meal is included in the price. Great scenic cruise through the Wachau Valley and the Danube Narrows. Budapest and Vienna were great. Some excursions were too strenuous for persons with walking difficulty, especially Salzburg where a long hike across town was required for some reason, and the guide just kept going on ahead and out of sight. Also, most of that excursion time was spent on a long bus ride. Other excursions were okay. There were many older people and persons with physical disabilities and the excursions required more ability than many of the people on the ship were capable of. Some accommodation was made, but not always. Staff on the ship were very helpful, and entertaining. Room maintenance was excellent. There was very little expense on the ship. It was fun watching the ship go through the locks on the Rhine Main canal. Language was never a problem during any part of the cruise and excursions. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of our general interest in central Europe and boy did we see a lot of it! The sunset harbor cruise in Budapest was a fantastic way to get started. The city is just stunning when seen from the river at night. The lights on all of the buildings and bridges were magical. The cruise itself was great. Both the food and the way everything was organized were astonishing. River conditions were difficult due to high water but the cruise director always had a plan for a great day each day. The buses to take us to our tours were always there on time. The tour guides had the right knowledge and equipment to give us an interesting tour. And, there was enough free time for us to wander and explore each of those unique and interesting cities on our own. My favorite day was in Regensberg. The old city was a delight and the organ concert in the cathedral was a highlight of the trip. Read Less

This was my first experience with any kind of cruise and first visit to Europe. The prior experiences of a friend who had been on 4 of these river cruises with Viking was the main reason I booked this once-in-a-lifetime trip with my sister. I felt the Viking organization in all facets to be excellent: the ship and its crew, the dining, the land excursions including city tours were interesting and the knowledgeable local guides were professional and in most cases quite entertaining as well. While under sail, it was only by looking out of the windows that you would know the ship was moving. Our fellow passengers were lovely people and because there were only 188 of us, it was a more intimate journey. There was no assigned seating for meals and people just gravitated towards the ones they would spend the most time with. I particularly enjoyed the history of the cities we visited: Budapest, Hungary; Vienna, Austria; Krems, Austria; Passau, Regensburg and Nuremburg, Germany. I only wish there had been more time in Nuremburg, but I was delighted with all aspects of the land excursions. Also enjoyable were the Hungarian Tea and Austrian Tea (which included an apple strudel demonstration and tasting) and the Taste of Austria evening - what fun we had! Read Less

Danube River cruise was on our bucket list. Viking made it a fantastic experience. Every excursion was new and informative. The service was outstanding. We loved the tour director and his daily talks. I can't say enough of how great our time aboard the Viking Freye. We had paid for a lower cabin level but we were upgraded to a higher level. It was a pleasant surprise but we would have been just as happy with the room that we had booked. The food was gourmet with a great variety. Although the ship was small, we had plenty of space and things to do onboard. The scenery was unbelievable. Everyone we met on board was pleasant and we met so many people from so many different places from around the world. The crew was happy and treated everyone with respect. I know that Viking lived up to its reputation and we will sail with them again. Read Less

An excellent journey from start to finish. You get what you pay for. I went with my father on this 7 night cruise from Budapest to Nuremburg. This was our first experience of cruising of any kind. Not knowing what to expect we were thoroughly pleased from start to finish. The flights with Lufthansa were on time and with my father receiving assistance at the airport we were treated really well and jumped queues. Arriving on the boat in time for lunch we tasted for the first time the fantastic food that we experienced throughout our trip. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all brilliant and sitting mixing with different people each time added to the experience. The staff on board were very helpful and polite. Our cabin was comfortable and the steward tidied it nearly every time we left without being intrusive. Each night our beds were turned down and night clothes laid out. Tomorrows itinerary was left at the end of the bed. The included excursions were very well organised with shorter or slower options for my father very welcome. The guides were excellent as were the drivers. The ear pieces connected to the guides microphone worked superbly meaning you didn't miss a thing they said. Our first day was complimented by 4 airplanes doing acrobatics up and down the river then a fire work display at night...both nothing to do with Viking but a celebration of May Day. The night cruise on the first evening to see Budapest was spectacular. Gottenweig Abbey was one of my favourite excursions but they all were well worth going on. The only optional trip we went on was the Vienese Concert. I was expecting a larger orchestra than 10 instruments but once they started playing I was pleasantly surprised how good they sounded and they were complimented by the wonderful singers and dancers. Because the boat had only 188 people on board we were able to talk to probably over half of them and a real community feeling built up during the week. The coach journey back to Munich Airport was even enhanced. The driver heard of a hold up on the motorway so took us cross country through beautiful Bavarian countryside letting us see quaint villages up close and still arriving at the airport with time to spare. In my opinion if you can afford it a Viking river cruise is a real treat if you like a relaxing holiday where you're really looked after. Read Less

The service was outstanding, greeting at airports, in diningroom, in lounge, on tours etc... Loved the idea of transfers from airport to boat and boat to airport. Didn't have to worry about a thing which is sometimes difficult with foreign languages. Receptionists, tour guides, maitre d', chefs, servers etc....were amazing! I think tipping should be included in price....according to Viking suggestion, the guide gets way more than all the other workers combined! Food and presentation of food was excellent! The free wine and beer really applies.....we were often topped up! Also like the idea of being to bring liquor on board; can even bring it to lounge areas. How refreshing compared to ocean cruises we have been on where no "outside "liquor is allowed. The free airfare deal from certain Canadian cities is an awesome motivator to go cruising. ( unfortunately Winnipeg is never included) All in all A GREAT experience, would love to go do another river cruise with Viking. J and C from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Read Less

Other friends recommended Viking and had wonderful experiences. My cousin and i booked this cruise as a retirement celebration two years ago. However, her cardiologist had us cancel just 8 days prior to sailing due to a life threatening health condition. We had booked through AAA and had taken out trip insurance which was used. Fortunately, with her cleared for travel we were able to rebook and take it this past April. I cannot say enough good things about Viking. We were taken care of from the time we landed in Munich until our departure after an extension in Budapest. In fact, our Viking representative stayed with us at the Budapest airport until we had cleared security. Our every need was met in a way that exceeded our expectations. The ship itself was lovely. Meals were fantastic and always had options. The staff was extremely friendly and patient. The inclusive shore excursions were wonderful with outstanding guides as were the optional ones we took. In Budapest the Viking representative in our hotel during our extension was extremely helpful even making us a dinner reservation. I am looking forward to another river cruise with Viking in the near future. Read Less

My husband and I are 66 and 72 years of age, and we were delighted with the variety of on-board evening shows; the sumptuous, gourmet, delicious meals; and the exciting shore excursions, all of which were led by astute, interesting, witty guides, and conducted at a lively pace. The cabin was immaculate and quiet, the staff was attentive and friendly, and the clientele was marvelous. It was the best vacation of our lives!!! Everything was perfect, and Viking lived up to its reputation. I would definitely do this again and recommend it to anyone, young and old. It was exciting to see so many different cities and learn about their history and have time to hike, explore, make new friends over dinner, and shop as much as we liked. I slept well, which is unusual for me on a trip; I think it was due to the sense of security and peace of mind I had, along with the healthy exercise gained from the daily excursions. It was a most relaxing and educationally stimulating experience! We both loved it! Read Less

Sailed from Budapest to Passau, then continued with Viking's four-day trip extension to Prague. We chose this route because it was requested by friends who accompanied us; my wife and I had actually sailed the Budapest-to-Nuremburg "Christmas markets" route in December 2012. It was nice all the same to revisit the cities and towns along the route and do different things from our previous visit. And it was warmer ;-) As usual, everything about the ship and its crew were excellent, as we experienced during the three previous trips on Viking River Cruises. The crew members we met were friendly, polite, courteous and helpful. The food was a perfect balance of healthful and naughty treats, and the entrees were not large--which we actually appreciated so we could return home and not break the bathroom scale ;-) Our room, on the 100 level, was perfectly comfortable and sufficiently roomy. Everything in the room worked fine. The "included" tours were helpful as usual, although the guide for Passau spent too much time talking about the churches, and the "choo-choo traIn" in Linz--when it rained in the morning--fogged up and prevented us from seeing anything. You can't help the weather, but maybe that train isn't such a good idea when the weather is cold and rainy. I was unable to go on the guided tour in Prague because I wasn't feeling well, but my wife went and said it was excellent. And OMG, we loved the city of Prague and our stay in the wonderful Palace Hotel. Read Less
