We celebrated our 50th with Viking and they took care of us royally. We liked it so much we may take that same cruise again for our 55th. We are impressed with Viking and will travel again with them. We've done one of the European cruises with them and that was also very much a delight. Thank you Viking! Our guide was awesome, I had some medical issues just before we were to leave and he took such good care of the group and made sure that the issues that almost kept us from taking this trip were taken care of in the most discreet ways that no one else knew that I even had any problems. I don't know how that could have been done even if I were home in the US. A special thanks to IOWA.Our accommodations were so nice and those that tended our room were helpful and so professional. The Dining both on board and on our excursions were just above anything we could have hoped for. The food choices, wine pairing and the wait staff( well I wanted to take some them home with us). The excursions were so unbelievable, that one of our traveling companions took notes and could actually write a book. Educational, enlightening, and awe-inspiring. We were just saying today we may take the same cruise again. In all of the areas that are one would give the highest of ranking or stars there was only one that I felt could be added to, the Fitness area. But that is my thing, trying to keep off extra weight when the food is so..so great. Ray and I recommend Viking and their River Cruises highly and we hope to take an ocean cruise with them next year. We have taken other ocean cruises and they were good, but we feel certain that Viking will surpass. Much Aloha, Read Less

Following in a friend's footsteps we chose Viking Emerald to China because all the reviews looked so great and the trip came highly recommended. Could barely fault anything for the whole two weeks. Logistics were superb, our luggage simply appeared outside our room and was collected everywhere we went. 7 flights in 2 weeks and hardly a delay anywhere. From day 1 we were looked after by the amazing Jimmy, not a single thing escaped his notice and he was an absolute mine of information. The small groups we were divided up into had their own guide and a local guide where needed on the excursions . Westin Bund hotel in Shanghai excellent hotel to start the trip followed by six luxurious nights on the ship. My wife is a vegetarian and the m'aitre d came to our breakfast every morning to discuss what she wanted to eat for lunch and dinner, when out at restaurants Jimmy made sure the staff new her dietary requirements. Any of the group needing a wheelchair got one complete with pusher, even on the Great Wall! Crew on the boat superbly trained and very talented providing the evening entertainment, every where we went there was a smiling cheerful helpful face. Excursions off the boat were great and some very informative talks on the ship along with a variety of activities, early morning tai chi puts you in good stead for the early starts once you leave the ship. The trip is very busy once you disembark Xian hotel was better than Shanghai, the city is a real eye opener. Terracotta warriors were fantastic, one of several highlights. Kerry Hotel in Bejing was the best yet, biggest beds in the world! Brilliant base for 3 hectic days, everything in the hotel or the adjoining mall ( supermarket is the last shop in the basement but sells cold beers, chocolate and pringles if you need a break from th usual fare!) Great Wall and all the main tourist places covered by excellent guides and all done in small groups from your own coach. Only downside is that some of the excursions are a bit tacky and more of a sales pitch. We skipped the Peking Duck evening and scored a hit by choosing the meal in the local restaurant. Do not buy anything from traders in Bejing until you have checked out the guy who appears magically at every Viking venue with his little yellow rickshaw truck, highlight of the holiday (nearly) Read Less

We enjoyed the whole trip, The tour guide was excellent. He did an outstanding job. Very knowledgeable, accommodating to your needs, nice and pleasant to be with. The places that we visited were all wonderful to see. Very educational and lots of history that one can do a second visit and learn more about the culture and people. All the hotels we stayed in were first class. Food and service were excellent. The land tours were also awesome. The Three Gorges was a beautiful sight to see and see how the village people who were relocated high in the mountains live. They walk for miles on the rugged mountain slopes to get to their destinations. This is a daily life for them. I thought their way of life is so incredible. Note: When you are a first time booker, I recommend that the travel person who helps you set up your tour should guide you of what to expect in the tour package. Because I booked the tour 9 months in advance, when it came closer to the cruise date, I didn't look at the email as often as I should and missed a lot of valuable information about what you should do (example- you have to do your own set up of the land tours of which one that you want to attend - it was not automatic). The travel person you initial helped you should follow up and help you and guide you on these land tours. Each time I called, I got a different person to help me. Most of them were curious and nice but I truly think the original person who helped with the initial booking should be your guide. David you was the initial person was never there when I called. When I left messages, he sometimes called back in the beginning of the initial booking but after that when I left a message, he never called back. I talked to several people that help me set up the land portion of the cruise. I was very grateful that one person, forgot name was the best who helped me do an automatic checking on the website about the cruise. That is my only complaint I have about the initial travel booker that book our cruise. Other than that I would recommend Viking to everyone. In fact, I called several people to make sure to use Viking on their next cruise. I would recommend everyone to choose Viking for their travel. Read Less

We left Alaska early to arrive in Beijing on Sunday,a day early before our scheduled tour. We and a second couple, also arriving early, were met at the airport by our Tour Guide (James) and were transported to our hotel where James made sure that all of our accommodations were taken care of and up to Viking standards. He made sure that we were fully informed about our upcoming tour agenda and travel connections, that included our tour extension to Hong Kong. Since this tour was a combined air and ship tour the hotel provisions were all five star and the individual hotel dining buffet accommodations were excusive. The ship accommodations and staff equaled the hotel provisions as were the dining opportunities. The combination of buffet and menu dining offered an amassing dining opportunity for even the most discriminating traveler. The onboard entertainment provided unique insight into local lore and talent of the ships staff who performed double duty to not only meet the daily needs of the traveler but showcased their talent as entertainers and ambassadors. About half way through our air tour portion a traveler became ill and required emergency medial treatment. James acted professionally in assuring that the traveler was immediately tended to and received the aid he required. James accompanied him to the hospital and stayed with him so he could translate for the traveler. So that none of the rest of us travelers were left in a lurch James made sure that our local Tour Guide got us back to our hotel. The traveler stayed with the tour and did not miss out on any of the tour. All of our City, Port and Shore excursions were well planed and executed. James and the various Local Tour Guides were all informative and very attentive to all of our individual travel needs and limitations. Their mastery of the English language was beyond reproach and assured that this tour will be remembered for ever. The afternoon before those of us who chose to take the Hong Kong tour extension were advised that do to a scheduling conflict our agenda had to be modified. To assure that none of our planed Viking activities in Guilin, enroot to Hong Kong, would be disrupted James and the Viking China home office coordinated with the airlines to assure that our tour continued to be seamless and smooth. They also contacted the local river cruise provider in Guilin and scheduled an upgrade, at no additional cost to our small tour group, making sure that we all received a full and complete experience that meet Viking standards. This same attention to detail carried throughout the entire tour. All services and amenities far exceeded anything we could have imagined and are looking forward to future journeys the VIKING WAY.. WE chose this cruise for the Terra Cotta Army and the 3 Gorges Dam. the hotels we stayed in prior to and after the crusie were magnificient. the cruise was great and up to Viking Standards. the Guide, Terry, was the best we've had in all our 20 years of traveling. our time in Beijing was well spent, and to be able to stand in the very spot of the protest on the Tianimin Square and to visit the Forbidden City was captivating. we truly enjoyed our time on the Great Wall and we totally impressed with the amount of physical effort it must have taken. china is a growing country and the time we were in Beijing and the rest of the tour/cruise, the smog was bearable and in most instances almost not noticeable. the food aboard ship was as always with Viking, excellent with great size portions. the Chinese staff, not Viking employees, had limited English however, this was not a deterent. We traveled on the final cruise of the year, we spent Christmas in Rouen as the Normandy Beaches excursion would have fallen on a Holiday. This is a very pleasant easy trip. Viking was on the ball, they rearranged the itinerary so that we would not miss a thing, a little fast paced to get a day ahead, but no inconvenience to passengers. This cruise spends a great deal of river time, so if you enjoy leisure time, this is your trip. The itinerary was not overcrowded, and the free time was generous. I really fell in love with France, it wasn't on my list to see, and was pleasantly surprised on its beauty and friendliness. After the free day in Paris and the tour through the Louvre, I came to love the city, it will definitely be on my list to return and spend more time. The cruise had all the highlights of the areas to see in Normandy, which is a really lovely portion of France. The Normandy landing tour was a Long day, it is just too far to break it down to 2 days, although I really think you could spend 2 whole days on the history alone in the area.Once again Viking was first class, this was our 5th cruise with them, and the new Long ships are really first rate. We upgraded to a suite and found it very much worth it with the extra down time this cruise afforded. If you are looking for a very good relaxing short trip through beautiful countryside and some generous history thrown in this is your cruise. Read Less

The cabins on our ship were always well maintained. We had a great view off our balcony and we could hear the scenery descriptions as we sailed down the Yangtze River. We really appreciated the surprise gifts left in our cabins during our journey. As always we enjoyed the varied Viking menu which included food and beverages native to the areas we visited. The crew put on some outstanding shows and the audience participation was a lot of fun. The stops we made, the excursions and our on board native country guide were all excellent! Our guide was easy to understand and always attended to our every need. We had plenty of time for sightseeing and shopping. And the on board shopping had an outstanding selection as well. This trip also featured an on board tailor so we could special order apparel. My husband, brother, sister-in-law and I would strongly recommend this trip! Read Less

This was out second Viking River cruise. A fair amount of time was spent ashore, so the entire "cruise" was not on the river. The three hotels that we stayed at were magnificent. The staff in the hotels as well as on-board the boat were extremely pleasant and very helpful. A lot of time was spent on buses traveling to and from out accommodations and places we were visiting. Some of the sites we visited were physically demanding. That being said, everything we saw was beautiful and a wonderful experience. The food and service, as with our other Viking experience was excellent. If you wanted something other than what was on the menu, the staff would quickly accommodate your wishes. The cabin was comfortable. I would suggest requesting a dehumidifier when you board the boat. We did and it arrived within minutes of our request. This was not our first Viking cruise nor will it be our last, We are sold on the Viking experience. Everything from accommodations to the food, service and the ours including the guides are the best. This was our very first cruise and it was absolutely amazing. We were looked after so well from the minute we were picked up at the airport until the minute they left us at the other end of our holiday. Our tour guide was Joshua and he was so knowledgeable. The entertainment on board ship was really good and the service we received was excellent. The staff even managed to remember our names! All of the excursions were amazing especially the Terracotta Army, which was my personal favourite. We are now saving hard for our next trip with Viking. Read Less

Sailed with Viking River Cruises (Emerald boat) Imperial Jewels of China. The land portion of the tour in Beijing/Xian/Shanghai were wonderful with fabulous 5 star hotels. The Yangtze River cruise needs some help-maybe 3 stars if I am generous. The ship supposedly is not that old but looks really shabby inside and out. Carpets are worn, floors are warped, room has mold on ceilings due to the high humidity, bathrooms in staterooms are vinyl and tired. The river itself is so polluted and dirty with trash floating down all the time that your balcony will not be used. The embarkation is a dirty side street along the river bank with many steps old stone steps to maneuver down-no modern port-felt bad for older folks trying to carry luggage down. No entertainment on board-some mahjong classes, lectures, staff variety show-very cheesy. Excusions were very good-side trips into the 3 Gorges is breathtaking & prettier than the main river. Navigating the locks were very impressive as well. Overall choose this tour because it gets you to all the major attractions safely and just realize the river cruise is not up to Western big companies such as Celebrity and Norwegian. Read Less

This was a combination 5 night cruise and 7 night land tour and it hit pretty much all the things we'd thought about seeing in China. Hotels were all 5 star (Ritz Carlton, Hilton, Shangri La) and the ship is a beautiful 5 star floating hotel on it's own accord! The Beijing Ritz Carlton provided by far the finest service that we have ever received at ANY hotel - they make you feel like royalty! As with all Viking cruises, local excursions at all stops/ports of call with knowledgeable local guides and they add a lot to the touring experience. Viking has also revamped the menu for a couple of onboard dinners to provide "western meals" and between them and the "western breakfast" available daily at the buffet (onboard and at the hotels) most folks shouldn't get "burnt-out" on Chinese food! I found the food to be generally very good - even though it is a little different from the "Chinese Food" we eat in the US - and beautifully presented Service onboard was also top notch. The crew really hustled to try and make sure everyone was well served and happy and even performed a couple of after dinner shows that were quite enjoyable. You just cannot beat Viking for a fantastic cruise experience. The best in service and facilities without breaking the bank to pay for it!!! Read Less
