We have always wanted to visit China to see the difference in cities, culture and landscapes! This Cruise/Land Tour trip was the perfect way to do that. In the two weeks that we were there we saw 6 megacities, flew three domestic flights within China along with experiencing their airlines and airports, in addition to the 7 night, 6 day cruise on the Yangtze river! -Embarkation went smoothly except for a minor glitch of delayed luggage due to customs holding up one bus temporarily. This is not the fault of the cruise staff and we still left on time. Disembarking was a breeze as was transferring to and from the many airports and hotels. Never had to deal directly with our luggage until the time came to check baggage for our return flight home from Beijing! -The hotel accommodations were unbelievably top notch! All were 5*+ and we felt that the Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai and the Wyndham in Xian were the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in! -The food on board the ship and in all the restaurants was phenomenal. So many opportunities to try new and unusual dishes that we'd never heard of or had before. The only "problem" was there was always too much! -Service aboard the ship was excellent from the cabin attendant to our wonderful waitress Alice and waiter in the dining room. Many are multitalented and also provide the passengers with evening entertainment shows! Any requests of staff were handled efficiently and with a smile. -A variety of onboard activities were offered, from experiencing a tea ceremony explanation, having a silk garment made to talks by the tour director and explanations by local experts on the history, culture and sites as we made our way on Yangtze for six days. -The shore excursions and land tours were equally eye opening, everything I expected and so much more! Visiting a 2nd grade classroom in an elementary school was one of many opportunities to interact one on one with the people. The tours did require some physical activity and walking. Climbing 12 floors to the top of a temple, watching the giant pandas in the Chongquin Zoo, exploring the Three Gorges dam and Terra Cotta warriors in Xian. The Three Gorges on the Yangtze were amazing with a chance to see up close one the most beautiful gorges from a Sampan! Walking on the Great Wall may have been the highlight however. There were just so many sites and experiences in this trip! We have been to many places in the world but we both agree that this is probably the most memorable trip we've taken! -The advantages of having a tour director with our group the whole two weeks was unbelievable. Our tour director Roy for our group of 36 people was Amazing. He did everything and I mean everything! He handled every little detail so that we could just enjoy ourselves. He made the difference between a good trip and an unbelievably excellent trip and he should be commended many times over. Read Less

My husband & I have always wanted to go to China. What better way than on a Cruise. We saw do much in a short amount of time. The first night we stayed at the Ritz-Carlton. This was a bonus and our meals were included. The next day we boarded the Ship. We were on the second floor which was excellent as the main desk was on this floor and also the Dinning room. We saw the Oriental Pearl Tower on the Bund River and from there went to a Mall and saw how they made Silk Oriental Carpets and also amazing pictures done by had in silk. From there we went to Old Shanghai to the Yu Yuan Garden. The weather turned bad and it rained very hard. It is hard to enjoy something when you are wet and cold. It was lovely though. We then went to a lovely Restaurant for a traditional Chinese meal. There are usually 8 to 10 people around a round table. From the Restaurant we then went to see an Acrobatic Troupe. They were simply amazing. All this took place in one day. We were very tired and went to bed so we would be ready for a full day coming up. We went to We did have 2 Tours cancelled as it was a weekend and they weren't available. This was disappointing, however, Viking made up for it and replaced them. I would say though that one replacement was a Science Museum and there was know one to explain what we were seeing. There was a local orchestra brought in in the evening and they played many different instruments that we have never heard. The next day we went to Jingzhou Ancient City. Very interesting and lots of stairs. The next morning we went to the Three Gorges and through the locks to the Three Gorges Dam. Believe it or not they have an outdoor Escalator to take you to the top. It was the largest dam we have ever seen. The next day we went to the Yangtze tributary and boarded a Sampan. This was really a nice way to see the Giver. We learned that many years ago people were buried on the side of the mountain and you could see one that is still in good shape. You have to be fast though to take a picture as you are in a moving boat. In Shibaozhai we went to a Temple. We had to climb 12 stories to get to this. You had better be fit for this trip as there were many stairs to climb on every excursion. We got off the ship one day and really had to climb a lot of stairs to get to the top of a large hill and there was a large market. Everyone is trying to sell you something. We disembarked in Chongging. I will say that the staff on the Ship were excellent and the Restaurant was lovely. The food was really good and the layout of the tables again was nice. At least 8 to a table. What a good way to get to meet people. As you can tell, there were lots of activities and you were glad when bedtime arrived. If you want to be on the go and see wonderful sights that you won't experience again this is the trip for you. Our fitness and recreation was not on board but every time we left the ship. Read Less

We chose this Cruise because I wanted to see areas of China I had not seen in my previous visit. My partner had never been to China it seemed like a very good way for him to see a lot of the country and the culture. We thoroughly enjoyed the onboard activities and the shore excursions were wonderful. The guide was a joy to have and full of wonderful information that made each Excursion come alive. The cabin and the amenities on board were very comfortable. The staff was courteous very thoughtful and helpful. Dining provided us with both Western food and local Chinese Fair all of it was delicious and beautifully presented. We had a wonderful time sailing between Beijing and Shanghai and would take another Viking Cruise sometime in the future probably somewhere in Europe. A cruise through Europe on a Viking ship is definitely on my bucket list. Read Less

We wanted to see China and this trip was the perfect mix of land/water. The highlight for my husband was the Terracota Warriors and for me was sailing down the river looking at the scenery of the gorges. Just magnificent. All the accomodations were top notch and we felt very well taken care of in every aspect of our journey. Our guide, Arnold, was just the best in terms of his knowledge and his leadership abilities. He made everyone feel welcome and that no question was too silly for him to answer. It was a plus that his photography skills are fantastic and we have some beautiful pictures from our trip that we will cherish. We met very interesting people and are looking forward to sailing with Viking on another trip in the future. Thank you for everything your company did to make our trip so successful. We will always remember my husband's 65th birthday. Read Less

Wonderful experience! The tours guides were knowledgeable on all subject matter related to the country and made the transportation transfers effortless for us. They made everyone feel welcome and special. We arrived a day late because of Airline problems and were worried about being met and what we would have to do to rejoin the tour. When we arrive in Beijing we were greeted by a guide who assured us that They would arrange for us to see the sights we had missed on the first day. Can't say enough great things about these men and women! The Hotel accommodations were superior and the excursions that were planned were excellent. We signed up for all of the extras and were not disappointed in any of them. The Ship accommodations were excellent also, we were able to sit on our own deck and watch the beautiful scenery or go into the public areas that were great for viewing also. Just can't say enough about the service and food on the ship! Fantastic! This was a great experience that I would recommend to everyone who wants to see China. Read Less

My 15 year old granddaughter and I planned a trip between middle and high-school. Our original intent was the European river cruise, however, because of terror attacks in Europe, we chose the only other cruise that would fit our schedule, China. What a wonderful change it was! Emma was the youngest person on the cruise by far. Everyone, staff and guests, were all very gracious. Our guide arranged an unscheduled stop to see pandas because Emma asked when we were going to see them. I believe the Panda stop was a highlight for everyone. Our cabin was comfortable, and the food on board provided many options for our differing tastes. We didn't miss an excursion and learned something new each day including how to play Mah-jongg. The only downside for a teenager was the lack of internet when we left Shanghai until we arrived in Peking. Upon leaving the boat in Chongqing we flew to Tibet. Unfortunately, it took the first day for us to adapt to the altitude. It would be nice if the trip could include a train to Tibet rather than a flight. Guests would have the opportunity to see the different landscapes of China and gradually adapt to the altitude. Tibet was full of amazing sights, sounds and aromas. Colors are everywhere. We enjoyed Yak steak; however, many of the other dishes were spicier than we are used to eating. The St Regis hotel was amazing. The slate floors in the bathroom are heated. Xi'en and the Terra Cotta Army is a memory we will always cherish. When we arrived at the Shangri-La hotel we decided we had died and were in food heaven. There was a salad bar, a sushi bar, pizza, steak, chicken, a seafood bar, and at least 30 feet of deserts! Our final stop was Beijing. The Great Wall, the Forbidden City all sights we will remember for a lifetime. It has been six months since our trip. We have wonderful memories and haven't eaten Chinese food yet. Read Less

We enjoyed the whole trip, The tour guide was excellent. He did an outstanding job. Very knowledgeable, accommodating to your needs, nice and pleasant to be with. The places that we visited were all wonderful to see. Very educational and lots of history that one can do a second visit and learn more about the culture and people. All the hotels we stayed in were first class. Food and service were excellent. The land tours were also awesome. The Three Gorges was a beautiful sight to see and see how the village people who were relocated high in the mountains live. They walk for miles on the rugged mountain slopes to get to their destinations. This is a daily life for them. I thought their way of life is so incredible. Note: When you are a first time booker, I recommend that the travel person who helps you set up your tour should guide you of what to expect in the tour package. Because I booked the tour 9 months in advance, when it came closer to the cruise date, I didn't look at the email as often as I should and missed a lot of valuable information about what you should do (example- you have to do your own set up of the land tours of which one that you want to attend - it was not automatic). The travel person you initial helped you should follow up and help you and guide you on these land tours. Each time I called, I got a different person to help me. Most of them were curious and nice but I truly think the original person who helped with the initial booking should be your guide. David you was the initial person was never there when I called. When I left messages, he sometimes called back in the beginning of the initial booking but after that when I left a message, he never called back. I talked to several people that help me set up the land portion of the cruise. I was very grateful that one person, forgot name was the best who helped me do an automatic checking on the website about the cruise. That is my only complaint I have about the initial travel booker that book our cruise. Other than that I would recommend Viking to everyone. In fact, I called several people to make sure to use Viking on their next cruise. I would recommend everyone to choose Viking for their travel. Read Less
