We too had a bad experience due to a broken lock. We shared the horrible port with 3 other Viking ships. Cement factory working through the night. Homeless family living under bridge. Not the picturesque view we imagined to have. We spent three days traveling by bus from boat at dock. Sunday, we traveled 20 minutes each way to see sites ofcity of Nuremberg. Then Monday, Nuremberg to Regensburg(4 hours round trip) - back to horrible port, then Nuremberg to Passau (7 hours round trip)- back to horrible port, then on Wednesday finally on a bus once again Nuremberg to Ybbs(6 hours) to be transferred to Viking Gulliveg. Viking knew on June 22 locks were broken and contingency plans needed to be made. This was the best they could come up with?? Shame on them! More time on bus than traveling the river. Their response? A voucher to use for future travel. No credit for "time served" on buses. No apologies. Just matter of fact.. this is what we are offering. This was our first river cruise. Not sure what was more disappointing...The broken lock with our "port view", Viking's "best" contingency plan of more than 20+ hours on a bus, or Viking's response. Read Less

I did some research about what time of year to cruise to avoid low water issues that plagued 2018 cruising. Trying to find the balance between warm weather, plenty of water to curise and not the height of tourism season. May 2019 was chosen. We had the three day extension in Prague at the beginning. My poor husband got food poisoning on our last day there from a meal at our hotel. The transfer to our boat was supposed to be to Nuremberg, but unfortunately the water level was too high and we spent the better part of the day on a bus to Passau. We arrived and emergency vehicles greeted us as a passenger had just embarked and died. The next three - four days were spent circling about and never in the right port. Instead we bused everywhere. Did I mention I got food poisoning on day two and spent the next three days in my cabin. Lastly we had to switch ships to the Gullveig to get to Budapest and then we find out the Viking ship before us had hit a boat full of Koreans. We arrived Budapest with television crews from all over the world and recovery efforts underway. There was virtually no free time for any wandering on your own. That being said, most of the problems that plagued our trip were not directly the fault of Viking, unfortunately for us they were all accumulated for no so great of an experience. Given the fact we had to work overtime for two years, I won't be persuaded anytime soon to give it another go. Lastly, the flights back from Budapest via Air France and a stop in Paris was a disaster. We specifically asked for wheelchair assistance and there was none to be found in Budapest and Paris. We were so very grateful to finally get home on U.S. soil. Read Less

Flew straight to Budapest and directly on board ship. The whole experience was extremely pleasant and all members off staff faultless. Due to adverse weather conditions a lot of changes were made to individual itineraries, but they dealt with the whole problem with ease and smoothness. Our cabin was very nice, compact, but not cramped. The restaurant was very good, with a wide variety of choices to the menu. We didn't take much part in the entertainment as this was a holiday to meet up with family, so too much talking and catching up. Living 4.5thousand miles apart there is little opportunity for us to meet, so it was goo to have a drink in the bar and be together. Our shore excursions were varied, although there were times when it was a bit difficult to keep up on the walking ones. ( Not as young or as fit as we used to be!) We will definitely go again, a different route next time, but we have already booked an ocean cruise for next March with Viking. Read Less

Family Christmas cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest....what a wonderful way to experience the best Christmas Markets in all of Europe. A must for any family wanting to share and create Holiday memories. The Christmas markets are an absolute must, with handmade goods including Christmas ornaments and souvenirs, local foods, mulled wine and great beers. Add in the local history and culture of each destination and it creates unbelievable memories. River locks along the Danube are also a fun and interesting experience as you travel along the river watching the scenery. Viking does it better than anyone! Great cabin accommodations, shore excursions that are included, enjoyable and fun, fabulous service and staff, nice dining and drink options and a great way to see and experience Europe. The ships are comfortable, modern and beautiful. Very relaxed cruising, with no pretentious atmosphere. This was our second Christmas cruise with Viking and we look forward to traveling more with Viking in the future! Read Less

We ,brother and sisters decided to spend Thanksgiving together something we had not done since we were children. We loved the beautiful sites, Nuremberg, Vienna ,Budapest, and shopping the Christmas Markets. The special touches provided by the staff were appreciated. Each morning the ship staff would greet us , handed us each a bottle of water and an umbrella if needed as we departed for the day's included excursions. When we returned, a ship staff person would welcome us back and serve us a treat which was representative of the area. The lectures were interesting and the entertainment was enjoyable. We had a great American Thanksgiving dinner. All the food, breakfast, lunch and dinner, was delicious. Cookies , coffee and hot tea was available all day long .All the service staff were attentive and friendly. Since the ship was small , we felt we were traveling with friends. We look forward to cruising on another Viking cruise. Read Less

This was an early November cruise and the temps were terrific at the start and got cooler as we headed north. It was fun to enjoy some of the Christmas markets that had already opened. Make sure to enjoy the Gluhwein. It is wonderful! Right from the beginning the crew made you feel welcome and cared for. We arrived early in the day and had our room within a half hour. The food was really good at every meal. We met some wonderful people and have stayed connected with a few couples and plan to cruise with them in the future. This was my first Viking River cruise and it will not be the last. Everything was great and I cannot add anything that would have made it better. We added our own AirBnB at the beginning and end of the tour - Loved the extra time in Budapest, enjoyed touring Buda & Pest and taking in the baths. We purchased a Budapest card and travelled everywhere on public transit. We also enjoyed Nurmberg and a day trip to Rothenburg with a few extended days afterward - we added a hotel right near the walled city - Holiday Inn Express. Perfect Location.. Read Less

Absolutely the best vacation. The entire staff was outstanding, but 4 people stood out. Oliver, the Program Director, was professional, enthusiastic, articulate, energetic, and very flexible. Anything he was a part of was made fun and memorable. Chef Renee, the head chef, was very personable and he and his cooking staff were always on point with the meals aboard the ship. His personal attention made us feel like he cared about my family and I. Additionally, he was a great guide on the 1 tour he guided through a farmer's market in Vienna. Belle, our server in the dining room, and her assistant Ali, were outstanding as well. Their personal attention to me and my family was second to none. We looked forward to breakfast and dinner not only because of the delicious food, but also their smiling faces and eager attitudes. Their superb service made them excellent Viking ambassadors. The only "4" rating was for value. I just thought the costs associated with the optional shore excursions were a bit high. The entire staff of the Ebil made Viking River Cruises very proud. Well done to all! Read Less
