We had taken a Viking River Cruise on the Rhone River last year, and we thoroughly enjoyed that river cruise. Service on this Viking Rhone River Cruise in France (Avignon to Lyon) was excellent. The staff members we encountered were always cheerful, courteous and helpful. Our room was kept neat and clean. The lobby and other common areas were always in tip-tip shape. Shore excursions were well planned, and were led by knowledgeable guides. The shore excursion venues that were selected by Viking were thoughtfully chosen. We would had like to have had some additional 'free time' during our trip to explore on our own. Meals on board were always excellent! The preparation and presentation were top notch! Evening entertainment was good. We traveled with my brother and sister-in law, but we also met many interesting people on the boat. The scenery was beautiful. We highly recommend this river cruise. First, we tried to take advantage of their low airfares. However, they charged us extra to come in early and stay later since we didn’t want to use their overpriced extensions. Also, their travel group was Very difficult to deal with. The good: The staff was, by far, the highlight of the trip. They are extremely well trained, friendly and quick to help. The French balcony room was very well designed and made excellent use of space. We liked the bed and the design of the shower. The bad: The “included tours” were too large (38-42 people). In hindsight, we would have preferred no included tours, at a lower price and booked our own. In addition, some tours were not that great, even with if it had been a small group. Viviers, in particular, was a sad little forgotten town with not much to see. You had to pay a premium to get a smaller group. One such “optional” tour was 120 euros per person and the group size was 22 people. The food was so so. We expected excellent food and got mediocre. The pre-cruise information talked of three venues, but in reality, there were two with basically the same menu. Tandem docking, ships docked side by side, was the norm at each port, taking away the view from our French balcony on a regular basis. There were only four ports on an 8 day cruise and very little daytime cruising. The sundeck was closed 90% of the cruise. The overall experience: We paid a premium to take a Viking river cruise and didn’t receive a premium experience. How anyone can give this cruis 5 stars is absurd. Read Less

For my sister's 65th birthday, we decided to cruise southern France with Viking. She & her husband started with the pre-cruise stay in Nice (which they loved), and my cousin and I joined them on the ship at Avignon for the cruise to Lyon. I have been on several river and a couple of ocean cruises with Viking, so it was no surprise that the week was delightful. The staff catered to us & made us happy every day. The cruise director was personable & perky; it was always a joy to have her company. This was southern France, so I wasn't sure if the food could live up to expectations, but no problem pleasing us & reminding us that we were in France. The young chef did not disappoint. Good food, good cheese, good wine. Happiness. Three excursions exceeded my expectations: Flavors of Provence in Avignon, the included tour in Lyon with Christian, and the all day Lyon tour Truffles and Beaujolais. In Avignon, Maison de Fogasses with Chef Luigi Baptiste was the best of the best! I think he enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed him & his lunch! Christian took us into "secret" passageways & shared his Lyon. And the truffle dog Chinook was as delightful as the truffle inspired dishes served to us on the truffle farm! No disappointment on this trip; the only problem is that I want to repeat the experience. Read Less

We had never been to France and this was a special trip. Our 40th Anniversary. Viking was the right choice in every respect. We added two extensions, both through Viking. The French Riviera (Nice, Monaco, Cannes & Paris as a Grand Finale). Accommodations, Hosting, Dining and Transportation were outstanding. The ship was well appointed and modern. The staff extremely courteous and professional in every respect. The river, villages and sites were pristine, historical and stunning. If you choose to go out on your own and explore, you can do so and the staff will offer pointers. If you choose to remain in a your group and gain insight from the host tour director then that is also a fine way to enjoy the history and various sites. The option is entirely yours. From meeting you at the airport to recommending fine dining on shore, the list is endless of the assistance that Viking offers each passenger. We will most definitely be traveling with Viking again in the future and highly recommend to the traveler wishing to encorporate quality, comfort, convenience, information, fine dining, luxury and value. Viking, in our opinion is simply one of the very best if not the very best all around cruise experiences in the industry. Read Less

My husband and I chose this trip for my birthday because I wanted to return to France after having gone on the Viking Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise 4 years ago. (And before that, I wasn't particularly interested in France, but some friends had asked then, so we said yes.) After 2 previous cruises with Viking, there was no doubt that they were going to be part of the 2017 celebration. In spite of world events the day of our arrival (knife attack in the Marseilles train station shortly before we arrived at the Marseilles airport), our transfer guide was there to greet us and get us to the ship as scheduled. Once we arrived, our luggage was transferred to our room, for us and we headed to the lounge and deck to meet some of our fellow travelers. It was great to unwind after the trip-before-the-vacation. As usual, everything met our expectations from the start. After that first evening, I think we joined in all but one of the included tours and added a couple of extra tours that particularly appealed to us. Every single guide that we had was fabulous, from the singing Camille in the Avignon Pope's Palace to the great story-teller Frances in Viviers to Christian in Lyon (who very poetically explained that 'it's French; it's complicated'). It says a lot when I'm writing this 3 months later and I still remember the guide's names and personalities! While the rooms on the ship are small, they are arranged well, have everything we needed including space for everything (with a small fridge to keep some water in). And honestly, we really didn't spend much more time than sleeping, showering and changing in it. Even when we weren't on an excursion, we enjoyed the sundeck and the lounge area. It was great to come back to the room one day and find the maid had included our small, stuffed cow traveling companion with some hand towel animals on the bed. I also used the laundry service on this trip--nowhere near as expensive as I expected and the clothes were done perfectly. Okay, about the food--sensational and enough variety for anyone. I tend not to be too adventurous when it comes to food, but I tried a lot of new things on this ship and was hugely happy that I did. Chef Josef and his work are incredible. We were also impressed with the entire staff on the ship. Everyone was incredibly cordial and sometimes quite humorous (Manuel!) After the first or second day, many of the main staff knew a lot of people by name, what your drink preference might be, and what you might be interested in. The evenings offered a variety of entertainment but wasn't so loud and distracting that we couldn't sit in a corner in the lounge with some friends and have a quiet conversation. We love the Viking ships because they're large enough to have something for everyone and small enough that you get to actually get to know (not merely meet) some new people. We're still friends with people we met on our first Viking trip 5 years ago. I would love to go on this cruise again or any other Viking cruise! Read Less

This was our 7th Viking Cruise. We really enjoy all aspects of the vacation. Small group means better service. Enjoy making friends on these trips. We especially enjoyed seeing all the Castles on the Rhine. Ending in Amsterdam was also a great place for an extension. All meals were wonderful and the complimentary wines were excellent. Many extra shore excursions were offered , but we only did the included ones and they were all great. Because we travel frequently we usually book the least expensive cabin option and they have all been great. The one negative thing we have had on a few ships is that when you are on the lowest level you need to keep the bathroom door closed because sometimes there is an odor that comes from the toilet. Other than that, we have NO complaints. We have been to China Yangtze Cruise Tour, Portugal's River of Gold, Paris and the Heart of Normandy, Bucharest to Budapest, Passage to Eastern Europe, Heart of Germany at Christmas, and Lyon to Avignon. Loved them all! Read Less

This was out first river cruise, after several ocean cruises previously (Seabourn, HAL, Celebrity, Cunard). We selected this particular cruise because it synched up with business travel and included Avignon as a port of call. Talk about hot! 95+ every day and when we embarked, the AC was not working. Once repaired, our cabin remained comfortable. However, whenever the Lounge and Dining room were occupied for group events (read dinner), the AC could not keep up and the room became very uncomfortable. With less heat, this would not be a problem. The boat is in excellent shape and very pleasing to the eye. The crew was exceptional. The excursions (included and optional) were extremely well organized and the fellow passengers were nearly always on time (if that were always the case....). We had one technical issue with a steam train excursion (train ahead of us had engine troubles and our train was delayed, no fault of Viking) and the Viking team brought in the coaches and returned us to the boat on time. Well done Viking! The food was good, not exceptional. The dining service was well above average and the staff friendly. The public spaces were constrained by the limitations of a river boat, so if you want public space variety, stick with ocean cruising. The on board entertainer was average at best, with one act brought on board below average and another exceptional. The cabin is as you would expect, tight on a river boat. The bathroom was also small by ocean cruise standards, but well laid out and very functional. If you set your expectations correctly, you will be very pleased. At age 60, we were perhaps the youngest on board except for a family group with 20 somethings included. Many of the fellow travels were spry, but several were not. The energy level was low based on this demographic and is the only reason we would not hurry back to Viking River Cruising. We will likely return once our energy level matches the demographic served. River cruising is nice (in cooler weather) and perfect for many. It does not match our current style. Perhaps in a decade we will return to the rivers. Read Less

My wife and I were interested in visiting some of the countries in which our families lived, and we wanted to travel in December to see the Christmas markets. We were extremely pleased with our choice. And we had the same wonderful experience on this Viking cruise as we had on our previous one. along the Rhone. The staff was superb, the tour guides were excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cities and sites we visited. We also went to two concentration camps, which were very sobering, but well worth the visits. The educational opportunities on this trip, through the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, seemed endless. Our journey began early, as we spent 3 days in Prague. It was a great start to our travels. Once we started the cruise, our favorites were Passau, Vienna, and Budapest, for the scenery, the markets, the food, and the tours. We were not very impressed with Linz. The food on board was great, although we think there could have been a little more emphasis on local cuisine like bratwurst. We heartily recommend the wine tasting tours, which we've done on both our Viking river cruises. The on-board entertainment was enjoyable, especially the Sounds of Austria. We are looking forward to future Viking cruises. Finally, we've been on a number of Royal Caribbean cruises, which we also thoroughly enjoyed. However, those were substantially different from Viking. They are far more active (kayaking, climbing up waterfalls, swimming with dolphins), and cater to a more diverse clientele (teens through seniors), while Viking had an older -- middle-aged, mostly -- crowd, with which we shared more life experiences. Viking offers more educational opportunities. Additionally, RC has a lot more passengers; the smaller number on Viking (around 175) gives staff the opportunity for much more interaction and personal attention. Read Less

Survey tour of southern France Traveling without repacking each day meant more time to relax and enjoy. Living on a hotel that is at the center of each city makes for the best experience. The crew was attentive and good humored. Did it rain? I suppose it did but we hardly noticed exploring the shops, cathedrals, and sights. Our red umbrellas kept us together and more than once allowed us to regroup with our tour. Dining with an excellent chef cooking with local ingredients but also enjoying restaurants ashore made for a gastronomic delight. Pairings of local wines made the meals. Dining with a variety of couples introduced us to our intelligent and learned shipmates. The most comfortable way to tour the Rhone ease and learn about the history and current life in southern France. You must do this once but be warned that you will come back again and again. Read Less

We extended the cruise by staying 3 days in Paris before boarding our ship in Lyon. We had a wonderful time revisiting sites and dining at wonderful restaurants. Viking arranged for a high speed train to take us to Lyon where boarding the ship was a breeze. The staff was very accommodating and the food was excellently prepared and delicious. We sailed that night and each day was at a different city/ town along the river. The guides were very knowledgeable and it was so easy to follow along with the head sets provided each person. The ship had entertainment at night that enhanced the experience. One night we took a tour of a town we were stopped at and went to the top of a hill to see the view by night. It was magical. Overall it was a wonderful and charming excursion that we would recommend to other cruisers. Read Less

We loved the entire Viking experience, starting with 3 days in Nice. However, I would say that hotel in Nice wasn't quite up to our expectations. All things considered the hotel sufficed, considering how much we loved Nice and touring the area, including a side trip to Monaco. We then took about a 4 hour bus ride to Avignon, along with many Viking cruise members, from Nice. Once we embarked on the ship the entire experience was simply fantastic. From our state room,to the crew,to the food, to the entertainment and the daily tours, everything was 5 Stars. We are currently looking at a Viking Russian Cruise for this coming fall. We loved our first experience with Viking and highly recommend cruising with them. By the way, the daily port of call tours were very informative, set up in small groups, with the headphones and having very knowledge, attentive and professional tour guides. The buses were extremely comfortable with bathroom facilities and easy access on and off the bus. Read Less

When we met our cabin maid she immediately made us feel at home. The cabin had every amenity available, our wifi worked well, the cabin was well laid out and very clean. Our maid took care of us magnificently, our room was always painstakingly restocked and cleaned. Having worked for years in the management of hotels and restaurants I was impressed by the professionalism of the service staff and excellent food produced by the kitchen. The food was elegantly presented and served - all of our meals were wonderful experiences. The on board meals were easily the equal or better than those onshore, and our tour was down the Rhone River! The daily tours were educational and lots of fun, our tour director Suzie was exceptional. She explained every day's itinerary and organized them smoothly and effortlessly. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Viking to anyone. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the excellent reviews Viking gets. As good as the reviews were, we were still blown away by how good the trip was. We were picked up at the airport by a very friendly Viking rep and taken to the ship for a very easy boarding. We were treated like they were genuinely glad to have us on board. None of the crowds and chaos of a large ocean cruise ship. The cabin was very small, but it was nicely decorated, extremely clean, and quite comfortable. The floor to ceiling window opened if we wanted and we never wished we had more space. The most amazing thing was that it was the most quiet room I have ever had, on a ship or otherwise. I never heard other passengers and I could not even tell that the ship was moving without looking out the window. Even though the room was very nice, we didn't spend a lot of time there because we were having too much fun on the shore excursions or in the common rooms with other guests. The food was consistently excellent, with plenty of choices. We had a tour of the kitchen and it was the cleanest kitchen I've ever seen. The chef was very entertaining. He said that he often buys fresh food while we are in port, to get the freshest supplies and also support the local businesses. I like that. There was an excursion included in the price of the cruise every day, and we went on all of them. Excellent local guides and we got electronic devises that allowed us to hear the guide from quite a long distance. This meant that we could wander and look at what we wanted, but still hear everything the guide was saying. it also meant that no one got lost and we never had to wait for stragglers to be rounded up. Service was outstanding, from the room steward to the dining room staff to the activities director. I would highly recommend Viking river cruises, and we will certainly be taking another trip with Viking in the future. Read Less

Our trip started in Lyon and ended in Nice. (We did the extension.) The Staff and Crew of the Buri paid attention to virtually every detail with warmth and friendliness. The accommodations were lovely. The bed was very comfortable and details such as 110-120v outlets in key places in the state room were so helpful. The food was outstanding as was the service in both the dining room and the lounge. The daily excursions were so well organized with top notch guides and "quiet boxes" so you didn't miss anything. We were delighted with visits to several wineries, beautiful towns, the many opportunities to meet local residents, visit historic sites, and just take in the Burgundy and Provençal regions. The extension to Nice was enjoyable. Accommodations were satisfactory (although we were spoiled by the level of luxury on the Buri). Nice is beautiful, but we truly enjoyed the day trips to the surrounding medieval towns. We love visiting France anyway, but the river cruise was uniquely special. I cannot overstate what a wonderful time we had. I strongly recommend Viking and this specific trip. Read Less

The Good: The crew, the staff, the boat. We splurged on an Executive Suite and didn't regret it for a moment. Spacious and well laid out, the stateroom easily allowed this earlier-riser husband to avoid disturbing late-sleeper wife. The views from the wrap-around balcony were sensational throughout the cruise. The OK: Considering the limits of time and space, the kitchen crew did a remarkable job three meals a day. A few of the dishes were exceptional, but no one would mistake the Buri for a three-star restaurant. We took Viking's offer of a three-day pre-cruise Paris stay. The hotel located two Metro stops west of La Place de L'Étoile, was relatively, if not optimally, convenient and well-appointed. It was rated four stars. I hadn't previously been aware of the chasm that exists between the fourth and fifth stars. The Bad: The travel arrangements: We had Viking arrange all our travel plans, to, from, and within France. For the trans-Atlantic flights we upgraded to business class. We had no choice of airline, and found Air France's version of "classe affaires" to be shockingly substandard. Both flights were on old planes with obsolete technology. On both flights there were glitches with the entertainment system; it didn't work at all on the flight to Paris and had to be rebooted twice at twenty minutes a shot on the return flight. The comfort and "extras" both in the air and on the ground didn't hold a candle to those of almost any Asian airline or, say, Virgin "Upper Class." The transfer from Paris to Chalon-sur-Sâone, the point of embarcation for the cruise, was via a FOUR-AND-A-HALF HOUR BUS TRIP!! Really!!! There's a 1.5 hour TGV from Paris to Dijon, where the bus stopped for a brief tour anyway, but that was apparently not an option with Viking. Compared to others, our flights to and from France were relatively painless. A couple from England with Viking-arranged travel plans had to be bussed to Marseille from Avignon, fly to Amsterdam, endure a five-hour layover before hopping a puddle jumper to Manchester. Total time: about the same as ours to Washington DC. The excursions. Most excursions started between 8-9 AM and lasted almost exactly four hours. Most involved uncomfortable bus trips; all involved following guides carrying identifying "lollipops" and individual electronic devices as, because of the size of the group (usually 30+) the guide would have otherwise been inaudible. The feeling of being rounded up and herded each morning was inescapable. The one-size-fits-all approach was not what I had hoped for on a "no compromises" vacation. In the 9 years since I've been retired I'd always been able to say I had never been bored. This, sadly, is no longer true. Conclusion: We take one major, blow-the-budget, no compromise trip a year. This was the eighth since my retirement and by far the least memorable. We gave it a shot: I had never wanted to go on a cruise, but was convinced that a river cruise with Viking would change my mind. It didn't. Big trips take lots of planning. The genesis of this trip was to see how well we could do leaving the planning to others. It won't happen again. I will NEVER AGAIN ride on an inter-urban bus nor be rendered a passive gawker on a tour made as impersonal and generic as possible by an "audio device" (a term that by the end of the tour had become an expression "that will live in infamy" with me) that all-but-precludes any meaningful interaction with the guide. Absolutely amazing week in the South of France from Avignon to Lyon. The staff is unbelievably attentive to your every need and will do the utmost to offer something incredible that you didn't know existed. The executive chef (female) and the sous chef (male) just grabbed us and waltzed around the dining room with my husband and I, what a treat. Their food was a "party-in-your-mouth" each meal was more and more delicious. The service by the entire staff was always friendly and like family (only nicer.) We had beautiful weather, light rain only one morning, sunny the rest of the week 75 to 85 degrees and dry. Our cabin Veranda A #333 with a balcony was ideal, it was on the starboard side of the ship that was never tethered to another ship, so we always had a water view. Our favorite tour was of a French woman's home in Chatenauf-du-Pape. We learned about her father's love of art and his display of his paintings were terrific, he also had a scarf on display that was signed by Picasso! Our second favorite was the French culinary school where we learned how to make cream puffs with caramelized peaches (YUM!) The wine in this region is incredible from Burgundy to Chatenauf-du-Pape it was all exquisite. No complaints whatsoever, we shall return to Europe via Viking! Read Less

We were pleasantly surprised at the number of Roman antiquities that were part of the tour. The spring weather was beautiful and sunny all but one cloudy day. All of the tours of the old French villages were great and we could see the Alps from some locations. We were offered maps and water to take on every trip to the villages. The ship was really clean and modern and the 110 volt outlets in the room was really appreciated. The staff were always helpful and cheerful. A very well organized cruise. While there were a few menu items we had to ask "what is that?" over all dining was excellent and varied. The daily update meetings kept us informed and aware of what was happening. Our departure was very early in the morning but we were thankfully escorted to the air port because there were opportunities to get lost. Read Less

Cruising to Alaska was fun with 3,000 other guests. Who knew it could be better? Not to mention the food on a Viking boat, I was impressed and not surprised by the quality and presentation, as a former French Bistro owner in a town outside of Montreal, Canada. Sailing with Viking and 189 other guests is an absolute dream. My life long partner and I are just discovering cruising in our retirement. In our early 60's we have the energy to explore new places, and now with Viking, return to old haunts in a far more leisurely way. Our Boat (BURI) was comfortable and beyond our expectations. Viking makes it very easy to mingle and meet others from around the world and make new friends. Viking chooses not to bother you with commercialization - Boutiques of all nature. The organization of shore excursions and the pick-up and delivery to and from the Ports/ Airports was made simple and efficient. This all speaks to Vikings years in the business and their employee selection process. It is also there with their tour guides - very knowledgeable. You expect a certain level of quality from Viking. Service staff are on the job and get to know you. This includes the kitchen staff. As an early riser I was on the Aquavit deck early with a coffee waiting after the second morning. WOW. We would, though, like to be as involved in the booking of the plane. We got notification too close to departure and had to scramble to make certain seat changes. The only complaint. Can hardly wait for our cruise to Holland in 2016, and our Ocean cruise with Viking soon to be planned. Read Less
