We had taken a Viking River Cruise on the Rhone River last year, and we thoroughly enjoyed that river cruise. Service on this Viking Rhone River Cruise in France (Avignon to Lyon) was excellent. The staff members we encountered were always cheerful, courteous and helpful. Our room was kept neat and clean. The lobby and other common areas were always in tip-tip shape. Shore excursions were well planned, and were led by knowledgeable guides. The shore excursion venues that were selected by Viking were thoughtfully chosen. We would had like to have had some additional 'free time' during our trip to explore on our own. Meals on board were always excellent! The preparation and presentation were top notch! Evening entertainment was good. We traveled with my brother and sister-in law, but we also met many interesting people on the boat. The scenery was beautiful. We highly recommend this river cruise. Wanted a quiet relaxing experience, but not boring. the ship, crew, food, programs made it entertaining and stimulating while the scenery relaxed you and the sites immersed you and taught you history. Overall a well rounded experience. Everything went smoothly and appreciated the staff caring for one guest at a time, even in the group excursions. The facilities were comfortable and cruising was gentle. only problem was when another ship would park next to ours and we would lose the view and some privacy. The food was very good, good variety and reflected the region and country. The entertainment completed well the day experience. The included shore excursions were very didactic and made interesting by the tour guides. They were appropriate and we did not go on any optional tours. We had not been to that area of France previously and were pleased with the choice as well as with the time of year. The Spanish performers were great. Read Less

We had never been to France and this was a special trip. Our 40th Anniversary. Viking was the right choice in every respect. We added two extensions, both through Viking. The French Riviera (Nice, Monaco, Cannes & Paris as a Grand Finale). Accommodations, Hosting, Dining and Transportation were outstanding. The ship was well appointed and modern. The staff extremely courteous and professional in every respect. The river, villages and sites were pristine, historical and stunning. If you choose to go out on your own and explore, you can do so and the staff will offer pointers. If you choose to remain in a your group and gain insight from the host tour director then that is also a fine way to enjoy the history and various sites. The option is entirely yours. From meeting you at the airport to recommending fine dining on shore, the list is endless of the assistance that Viking offers each passenger. We will most definitely be traveling with Viking again in the future and highly recommend to the traveler wishing to encorporate quality, comfort, convenience, information, fine dining, luxury and value. Viking, in our opinion is simply one of the very best if not the very best all around cruise experiences in the industry. Read Less

This cruise was amazing. This was our second cruise with Viking. I love the river cruises because they are small, you can come and go whenever you want to. There is no seasickness on the river, because it is so calm. You dock right in the heart of each destination. The staff and crew are wonderful, and take really good care of you from the moment you arrive until the moment you board your plane back home. It takes all the worry out of traveling. The excursions were so interesting and fun. We took the steam train through the Ardeche Valley which was breathtaking. My favorite trip was to the Lavender fields. I learned how the essential oil is made, through the distillation process and even got to walk through the gorgeous and aromatic Lavender field. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and the speaker phones allow you to hear everything even on a crowded street. The food was wonderful, and I also love the coffee/tea bar with delicious regional pastries .The night time entertainment was fun and allows you to meet people from all over. I love the trivia nights. I would not travel with anyone else any more. Viking has spoiled us. We are in the process of planning our next cruise to China. Read Less

We had a terrible experience on our Viking River Cruise in Southern France. We were alerted about 1 week in advance that our 7 night river cruise would be reduced to 5 nights because the Viking Buri ship needed scheduled maintenance. We would be moved to a Sofitel Hotel in Lyon France for the last 2 nights of the cruise. As retribution, Viking gave us a voucher for $250 per person to use on a future cruise. This in itself was a major inconvenience. We take cruises for the simple reason of not having to pack and repack our belongings, while moving from city-to-city. This cruise was all inclusive including meals. So we paid for these meals. While on the ship, Viking provided several meal and drink choices. While at the Sofitel Hotel, Viking included breakfast, lunch and dinner. The problem was that the two dinner meals were terrible. The first night, the only offering on the menu was veal. We cannot eat veal. Viking refused to provide any other meal choices. So we went to a restaurant at our own expense. The second night, the only dinner offering on the menu was lamb. We cannot eat lamb either. So, again we went to a restaurant at our own expense. On the second night, people were totally disgusted. At least 60 out of 180 people followed suit and went to restaurants. Viking refused to reimburse us for our restaurant expenses. A voucher for $250 per person is an embarrassment. We asked that Viking increase their voucher of $250 per person to cover our inconveniences and additional dinner expenses. They refused. The bottom line is that unless Viking compensates us for this our inconveniences and additional expenses, we are cancelling our Viking Southern Mediterranean Ocean Cruise that is already booked and paid for next year. My wife and I were interested in visiting some of the countries in which our families lived, and we wanted to travel in December to see the Christmas markets. We were extremely pleased with our choice. And we had the same wonderful experience on this Viking cruise as we had on our previous one. along the Rhone. The staff was superb, the tour guides were excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cities and sites we visited. We also went to two concentration camps, which were very sobering, but well worth the visits. The educational opportunities on this trip, through the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, seemed endless. Our journey began early, as we spent 3 days in Prague. It was a great start to our travels. Once we started the cruise, our favorites were Passau, Vienna, and Budapest, for the scenery, the markets, the food, and the tours. We were not very impressed with Linz. The food on board was great, although we think there could have been a little more emphasis on local cuisine like bratwurst. We heartily recommend the wine tasting tours, which we've done on both our Viking river cruises. The on-board entertainment was enjoyable, especially the Sounds of Austria. We are looking forward to future Viking cruises. Finally, we've been on a number of Royal Caribbean cruises, which we also thoroughly enjoyed. However, those were substantially different from Viking. They are far more active (kayaking, climbing up waterfalls, swimming with dolphins), and cater to a more diverse clientele (teens through seniors), while Viking had an older -- middle-aged, mostly -- crowd, with which we shared more life experiences. Viking offers more educational opportunities. Additionally, RC has a lot more passengers; the smaller number on Viking (around 175) gives staff the opportunity for much more interaction and personal attention. Read Less

We extended the cruise by staying 3 days in Paris before boarding our ship in Lyon. We had a wonderful time revisiting sites and dining at wonderful restaurants. Viking arranged for a high speed train to take us to Lyon where boarding the ship was a breeze. The staff was very accommodating and the food was excellently prepared and delicious. We sailed that night and each day was at a different city/ town along the river. The guides were very knowledgeable and it was so easy to follow along with the head sets provided each person. The ship had entertainment at night that enhanced the experience. One night we took a tour of a town we were stopped at and went to the top of a hill to see the view by night. It was magical. Overall it was a wonderful and charming excursion that we would recommend to other cruisers. Read Less

My daughter & I went on this cruise together. She did the research to learn about suitable cruises in our budget & time frames. Also, people she knew had taken Viking cruises & described & recommended this Rhone River Viking cruise. We enjoyed several of the shore excursions that included healthy hikes as well as the ship's entertainment & activities. Mia, the activities director, joined in many of the socializing times--dancing, etc.--& seemed like a new-found friend. All the tour guides, selected by Viking, were pleasant, knowledgeable, & accommodating for such extra things as finding an unplanned toilet facility. Food was good--(great duck & ever-flowing wines!)--& the servers & all the staff acted like personal friends. We especially enjoyed the piano performances of the pianist, Pedro. All service was excellent--no problems. A mixup regarding several passengers' luggage occurrred with the airline from Amsterdam. The Viking representative who met us at Marseille was very helpful about making the claim for our delayed luggage. It was found & delivered to our room by evening. This was typical of the friendly personal service of all the Viking employees. The room we shared was comfortable & ingeniously designed for maximum convenience of amenities. We enjoyed the friendliness of the small number of passengers (vs. large boat ocean cruises) & were also happy to find some new friends to keep in contact with. We found that friendships especially flourished when we spent time in the lounges. Our cruise did not have children. No one could possibly get seasick on the etxtremely smooth & quiet movement of the ship; if we didn't look out the windows, we didn't realize we were moving at all! Yes, we are looking forward to planning our next river cruise on a Viking boat next summer! Read Less

Recommendations from friends. We were skeptical about traveling with a large group. However, the first night we met an amazing couple. The gentleman was 104 and the lady was in her nineties. They were energetic and charming. We were on walking tours with them and they had no issues with the physical exertion. From that first night we met many interesting and enjoyable people in all age groups. The daily tours were well planned, interesting and included professional and knowledgeable guides. One guide was able to describe a church from outside the church without missing a beat. She was able to describe the seven tapestries in order without hesitation. That was typical of the knowledge of the guides. Most afternoons, we explored by ourselves, but did enjoy lunch in town with fellow cruisers. The food aboard ship was excellent. The service was impeccable from a friendly, cheerful staff. The Program Director was remarkable, very friendly and available. Her enthusiasm was evident and added greatly to an already marvelous experience. The remainder of the crew was just as professional and friendly. From housekeeping to the Captain, nothing was too much trouble or inconvenient. By the time we left, we felt like part of the Viking family. Our extended stay in Paris was more of the same. Exceptional accommodations and a professional, helpful and cheerful staff. All of the Viking employees with whom we came in contact were dedicated to enhancing the experience. We are looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise, we know we will not be disappointed. Our most difficult decision will be which cruise to take. Read Less
