This was a nice trip. BUT we paid to upgrade our room to a balcony suite and expected good views. But each night they docked next to another ship and our view was the room on the other ship. We could not open our curtain. Biking did not mention this when they took out money. We actually enjoyed this trip and saw many wonderful sites. The people on board were nice. The crew was wonderful and took care of all of our needs. The food was great. The included tours were great. It was nice to be pampered all week long. Housekeeping did an awesome job. They clean our room at least twice a day. So all in all the trip was great. I just can’t get over the fact that we wasted a lot of money on an upgrade that was worthless. Biking should be ashamed of themselves. I don’t know if I can recommend them to someone else with out mentioning the room situation. Read Less

Grand European tour covered places I wanted to see and met the 2 week time frame my friend wanted. It was fabulous! The included tours were wonderful; the young escorts were fantastic. The ship staff were friendly and helpful. The food was terrific. I loved being able to see so much, experience so much, and meet so many lovely people. The attention to detail was exceptional; my boarding pass was even obtained for me in Budapest. I enjoyed the walking tour in Amsterdam to start the trip. I enjoyed several optional tours. The lectures were excellent. I was amazed by the efficiency of departures and embarkation. Our tour director was professional and unfazed by some problems caused by swollen rivers; we covered all excursions despite a damaged original riverboat and even received a thousand dollar voucher towards the next cruise. I plan to travel with Viking River Cruises in the near future. Read Less

We took the Grand European Tour and stayed in the Explorer Suite (a special occasion at great expense). This is a senior cruise, with the majority of guests over 65. Disabuse yourself of the idea that a river cruise is charming small ships sailing right into town. With the exception of Krems and Bamberg, all ships dock very far from the towns and a Viking shuttle bus takes you to the town center, often miles away; the docks are sometimes just cement landings in an industrial port area. This is an all English-speaking cruise, with 95% being Americans, with a few Canadians, Brits, and Australians. Also be prepared for the huge crowds of tours--river cruising has boomed tremendously. There were sometimes four Viking vessels docked, each with 200 people, along with a dozen other cruise boats from other companies. The tours groups are about 50 people each, so imagine how crowded that gets with all the tours going in the same places simultaneously. If you are thinking of getting the Explorer Suite, think again: these rooms (only two on each ship) are located directly over the ships' engines, and the balconies are basically unusable unless the ship is docked (and who wants to sit out there and look at cement?). The vibration from the engines is so loud and so severe that at one point I watched a glass vibrate its way across the glass table and fall off. This is especially true of an up-river cruise (Amsterdam to Budapest) as the engines are always working full-blast. Save your money and get a regular suite up toward the front of the ship where it's quiet. I think Mr. Hagen, Viking's founder, ought to spend two weeks in one of his Explorer Suites to see what it's like. The food is good, not great, but good. I have food allergies and the Maitre d' met with me each morning to go over the entire menu to make sure I wouldn't get sick, and I didn't. The service overall is beyond anything we've ever experienced--kind, helpful, friendly beyond belief, and the Viking crew seems to absolutely love their jobs. Very well done. We added the Prague Extension. Beware--the "transfer to Prague," which our sales agent told us was a few hours by bus, is an EIGHT hour drive via Slovakia (with a rest stop for lunch in what had to be the worst cafeteria food I've ever had), in essence losing an entire day (advertised as three days in Prague). Then, the only other complaint was the Soviet-era hotel called the Corinthia; Viking says "Hilton hotel or equivalent," supposedly a five-star hotel which is nothing of the sort. It's miles away from town in an industrial park, and there are shuttle buses--very nice ones--which take you to and from the old town square every half hour. The hotel's air conditioning did not work, and they "fixed" it by giving us a fan. The windows don't open. Many of us were miserable. If I were to do it all over again, I'd book a flight from Budapest to Prague and get a hotel in town--it would also save time and money. We are a gay couple in our 60s, and luckily found another couple to hang out with, because otherwise the clientele was frosty towards us at best and on at least two occasions people did not allow us to sit with them--always Americans, almost always from the South. My favorite moment at breakfast was when a woman from Alabama ended up sitting across from us--her husband had sat there first leaving only the chair across from me free for her--and under her breath muttered to him "why did you have to sit HERE?" She wouldn't speak to me and stared off into the distance acting as if there were a bad smell in the room. Variations on this occurred several times. Obviously this is a cruise for straight couples. Fortunately there were also some very decent couples, wonderful people, who were happy to sit with us. Sometimes, though, it was awkward. This is no fault of Viking's of course, just something to be aware of if you're a gay couple--bring friends along or be prepared to be shunned, not ever by Viking staff, but by your fellow travelers. On the plus side, the included tours are wonderful, though whirlwind fast, sometimes with a bit of time on your own (never more than a half hour though).. There are rechargeable "Quiet Vox" boxes in each room with an earpiece which one brings along. The highlights of the trip included an organ concert in Passau's cathedral, truly excellent; and when the captain took the ship out for a 90 minute cruise at night in Budapest--we've never seen anything like it in our lives, with all the big buildings in Pest and Buda (opposite sides of the Danube) all lit up. Absolutely mind-blowingly gorgeous. The other highlights were the small towns of Bamberg, Rothenburg, Miltenburg, and Krems. We quickly realized we liked the charm of the small towns more than the crowds and bustle of the big cities like Amsterdam and Vienna (also having been to both before). All in all a wonderful trip--Viking is possibly the best-managed cruise company we've ever seen and they really take care of you--with a few weird hiccups. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and it's very different from ocean cruises. The atmosphere on board is cozy and more personal contact with co-travelers, which we liked. The food selections were not as many as ocean cruises, but the quality of dishes for every meal was excellent. Despite no buffet and room services, we were never hungry with fruits and cookies available on board. We don't drink much, and was surprised that we had to pay for juice outside of meal time. All local tour guides for onshore excursion were very knowledgeable with good English skills. We appreciated the provision of "leisure" group for the daily onshore excursions for people like me who have knee problems and walk at a slower speed, and didn't want the pressure of slowing other people down. We have booked an ocean cruise next year, and really hope this kind consideration will be extended to the ocean cruise excursions as well. We didn't have good weather during our cruise. Rain and grey sky half of the time, not Viking's fault. However, we did have problems with our key cards (more than once) and loss of power inside our cabin which required electricians' attention (more than once). We enjoyed the on-board lectures and performances, except the lounge was a little small and many seats had obstructed view of the speaker/screen/performers (we had problem finding a good seat 10-15 minutes before the lecture and performances). We then tried to watch them on TV in our cabin, but the microphones in the lounge were very directional, and the audio part wasn't reliable. The daily briefing by our able and helpful program director Alex on next day's activities before dinner every evening was great. All personnel on board were very friendly, warm and welcoming. A couple of days into our cruise, we were notified by our credit company that our credit cards were compromised. Within 24 hours, we could see that the fraudulent charges to our credit cards were mounting quickly to close to $15,000. With the help of the phone on board, we were able to communicate with our credit card company more effectively trying to resolve the crisis! The morning we disembark, we had pouring rain (4/4/15 in Amsterdam). Although the luggage we put outside of our cabin was retrieved and transported while we were having breakfast (so we only need to carry our carryons with us when we disembark), we were horrified to see those two pre-transported luggage were placed yards away from the bus, unloaded onto the bus, uncovered and exposed to the downpour. They were only loaded onto the bus after we arrive ourselves and identified the luggage as ours. Of course they were soaking wet by then (some items packed close the the surfaces were damp when we checked after arrival at the airport). It was a very relaxing way to travel, and Viking is very good at providing excellent services to make the trip enjoyable. We hope we'll see the same on our Viking ocean cruise next year. Read Less

We had always wanted to do a European Riverboat Cruise. It was everything we had hoped for and more. The dining and entertainment was excellent, the crew and the wait staff were extremely friendly, courteous and professional. There were get togethers with the tour director every night in the lounge, showing us videos of the different ports of call and what we could expect to see and the shore excursions were well organized and really gave you an insight into what life was like in the different countries that we visited. Before the cruise even started, the airlines lost both of our bags of luggage. We can't say enough about how helpful the crew was in trying to get our luggage back. They spent an enormous amount of time with us, compiling lists of what articles of clothing we thought had been lost, filling out forms to submit to the airlines and making countless calls to the airlines in an attempt to find our luggage. We had purchased two days of clothing in Amsterdam, assuming we would get our luggage back soon and the cruise ship washed, dried and ironed our laundry every day for free until we got our first bag of luggage back, which wasn't until one week into the cruise. Hats off to all of them, they were fantastic. Between the magnificent scenery, the excursions, the local cuisine and the onboard experience, it was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations we've ever had. We're already booked on another Viking Cruise in October of 2020 and we can't wait. For us, Viking lived up to the expectations and we would highly recommend it. Read Less

The dining choices were beautiful with great menu choices served by attentive and gracious staff. The lounge was very comfortable with a well stocked bar and amiable crew and delightful entertainment. The tours were wonderfully well organized, great fun and very educational and interesting. The local tour guides were very knowledgeable, informative, and entertaining. Most of all, our Tour Director, Chantal, was absolutely outstanding! Since we were planning on this being our trip of a lifetime, we chose the best, Viking. Your reputation for excellence tipped the scale to you. We booked a year in advance taking out trip insurance to be safe. Well we almost needed it. My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma. With 25 brain tumors during the year we weren't sure we could go. However, she was cleared to take the trip the week before we left. Neither of us had been on a trip like this before, and had no idea how it would go. We found out it was quite challenging due to her health and mobility. However, we persevered with the help and support of our wonderful crew, passengers and local europeans. It was wonderful!!!!! We were amazed by the entire itinerary. Wonderful sights and people. Our crew and guides were excellent. So well organized and able to react to every obstacle thrown at them. The most amazing thing was how the crew and corporate were able to complete our trip after the actual cruise had to end after 11 days. The freighter that ran aground in the middle of the Danube really could have been a compete trip killer. However, you managed to find busses, restaurants, hotels and a last night dinner cruise in Budapest. All first class hotels and restaurants. We are firmly convinced no other cruise line could have pulled that off!!! We cannot say enough about your cruise line and our crew in of the Bragi in particular. From the stewards, waiters, bar tenders, chef, cruise director and staff were just wonderful. If we could we would want the same crew again!!! We are not sure if her health will allow it, but we would definitely cruise with you again. We tell every one we know that if you want a first class trip Viking is the way to go. Well worth any difference in price over the others. Thanks again for our Trip of a Lifetime!!! Read Less

River cruising is a relaxing and interesting way to travel. There is much more focus on experiencing the local environment, culture and history than on Ocean Cruises. Viking did an excellent job of organizing tours, coordinating transport and and enabling us to get the most out of our brief visits to towns and cities along the Rhine and Danube. The staff was excellent, proficient and friendly. The Program Director "Joey" was excellent and made even the inconvenient times bearable. Due to an accident blocking traffic on the Danube we had to complete our cruise by bus, which is no ones idea of a great way to travel. However, Viking went a above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of and completed our journey. Joey and Sandra, Viking Staff, stayed with on the buses and in the hotels and did everything in their power to make sure we had an enjoyable experience. Their professionalism, friendliness and enthusiasm kept us all together and made up for the disruption and inconvenience. The food and accommodations aboard the Bragi were excellent. The ship was clean and all services were provided professionally. A word to those considering River Cruising. There is a limited number of things to keep you entertained aboard the boat. Much of the value of the trip is in the side trips and tours of the towns and cities. If you cannot comfortably walk for at least two hours, these side trips will not be practical. For much of the trip the upper deck of the boat is closed so that if you elect to stay on the boat you will be confined to your stateroom or the small public lounge on the ship. It is not always practical to take your own side trip as the boat often drops tours off and picks them up at a different docking place. To those who have committed to a River Cruise, please think seriously about the convenience of the local population and other passengers as you walk around in your large tour groups. Don't block traffic, don't block the entrance to businesses, be considerate of locals trying to get about their daily business. And be considerate of other passengers. Pushing to get first in line, asking long and irrelevant questions, monopolizing the guide's time and attention, asking for breaks because you're unable to keep up, all make the tour unpleasant for others. We truly enjoyed our extra nights in Amsterdam and highly recommend extended stay at the beginning of the cruise to help overcome jet lag. Amsterdam is a great walkable city...just watch out for the bikes! We enjoyed all of our excursions and the guides provided so much history and insight. We particularly enjoyed the smaller riverside towns and the Franconian Countryside tour more than the bigger cities like Vienna. The speakers they brought onboard were educational and funny. We had just enough choices for meals and dining variety. The Program Director was fantastic! She seemed to be everywhere making sure we all had a great time. My wife and I have been on numerous cruises (18+) throughout the world on various cruise lines over the years. This was our third cruise with Viking; previous cruises were to China and Egypt. The 15-day Grand European Tour started with the Prague Extension in the Czech Republic on October 4, 2017. Our flight from Florida was arranged by Viking and flew through Frankfort, then to Prague. No problems. The Viking representative was waiting for us at the airport in Prague. The Prague Extension was great, the Palace Hotel was in the old part of town and an easy walk to everything of interest. The included tour was nice, the Lobkowicz Palace tour was very interesting and the Kutna Hora trip (including lunch) was fantastic. We also attended the Folklore dinner. Prague was worth the time and money. We were then bused to Budapest, Hungary to start the River Cruise. The bus trip was around 6 hours or so, in a very nice modern bus. We stopped a few times for restroom breaks and lunch (on us). Boarding the ship was very easy; they were waiting for us. Our room was towards the middle the ship on deck 2, room 209. This was a good location because we were near public rest rooms, the front desk and the stairways to the upper floors and lounge. Most points of interest are on 2 (dining room), 3 (lounge) or the sun deck (the roof). Deck 1 has some passenger rooms and all crew rooms. The ship was a few years old and was very nice; very clean. The staff was great and the food was excellent. The chef would provide a little discussion of the dinner menu every night and appeared to be excited about the food and his staff. Breakfast was available in the dining room and also on deck 3 in the lounge in a reduced menu. It was similar for lunch. Beer and wine were provided during dinner and lunch. Coffee and cookies were available in two locations 24/7. Food was almost always available someplace. The ship provided complimentary water prior to every tour. The Program Director, Kane, provided information about tours and timing and basically everything you need to know on a timely basis. He even provided entertainment in the evenings when local entertainers were not on board. The ship had two entertainers on board who performed in the lounge several times during the day and in the evenings. They were very professional and excellent musicians. We generally just took the included tours, although we did pay to add the Thermal Bath in Budapest, Hungary, the Mozart & Strauss Concert in Vienna, Austria and the Rothenburg ob der Tauber tour in Wurzburg, Germany. These are three don't miss tours. The visited Ports of Call follow. Budapest, Hungary – The included tour, run by a local guide was a nice way to learn about the history of the area. It required some walking over cobblestones and dodging around traffic but generally was not an issue. We had some free time after the tour for walking around to shop (or get a beer), if interested. The additional thermal baths were a blast. It's what the locals do. Vienna, Austria – The included tour was similar to the Budapest walk around. The Mozart & Strauss Concert is a must see ... get a seat up front. It's a small group of musicians but they have a full sound. Melk, Austria – The included tour was primarily the Melk Abbey. It's up on a hill over looking the river and is outstanding. Passau, Germany – The included tour was similar to the Budapest walk around but also included an organ concert … impressive. Regensburg, Germany – The included tour was similar to the Budapest walk around. Nuremberg, Germany – The included tour was similar to the Budapest walk around. The discussions about the 2nd World War are interesting. Bamberg, Germany – The included tour was similar to the Budapest walk around. The city is noted for it's smoke-favored beer … try it at the brewery. You can buy it at a window and take it out to the street to drink it. Don't forget to redeem the little plastic token for your glass deposit. Wurzburg, Germany – We didn't take the included tour in Wurzburg, but paid to visit Rothenburg, one of the optional tours. Rothenburg is a walled in, medieval city. While the tour was similar to the Budapest walk around, the free time was great. We walked around the wall circling the city and visited a few of the shops. A very interesting place to visit … one of the highlights of the trip. The included lunch was very good, German food and drinks. The tour include a short visit to Wurzburg. Wertheim, Germany – The included tour was similar to the Budapest walk around. This city featured a glassblowing shop with beautiful items to purchase. One of the owners provided a demonstration the night before on the ship. The presentation on the ship was a little wordy but the glass work was first class. Koblenz, Germany – The included tour was to the Marksburg Castle. The Program Director warned of the difficulty of this castle but it was worth it. The castle is on a hilltop that required taking many steps up to the castle and then walking on very uneven walkways. But, this is a real castle where people lived with few conveniences. It is worth the walk/climb up and down. Cologne, Germany – The included tour was similar to the Budapest walk around except it is centered around the largest cathedral in Northern Europe. We had a great lunch at the Famous Papa Joe's on the square prior to walking across the bridge and enjoying the view … nice day. Kinderdijk, Netherlands – The included tour was a short walk to a windmill (in the rain)…. a real windmill that you can walk into and up to the living area. This was interesting. At the end of the cruise, we added the additional days in Amsterdam. We toured both the Van Gogh (on our own) and Rijksmuseums (included in the Golden Age tour). It was worth the extra time and money. The weather turned bad but we had our ski jackets with us. Additional information was available about the Jewish population in several cities … this is optional and free; take it, it is very informative and interesting. Overall, the cruise was wonderful. You will see too many locks (67), vineyards, palaces, churches and castles; but you will meet many very nice people on the ship and also, tour guides and locals. You will also walk …. a lot. Viking really took good care of us; they were always there to make sure everything was taken care of during the trip. They really seemed to care. A great trip. Read Less

Some ports of call had difficult on and off walkways--but manageable to most people. I did see several instances where assistance was needed to mobility impaired passengers and staff was readily at hand. The cruise director also was able to make sure everyone knew if the destination would be a hard climb or difficult walking conditions and advised everyone in briefings. I learned considerably more in every briefing--certainly did not want to miss any of those. My closest friend and his wife signed up for the cruise and recommended it to us as they had sailed on two previous Viking river cruises and enjoyed them very much. I especially liked the fact that, if I had to return to my cabin, it was always no more than a minute away instead of 10-15 minutes. The smaller ship size and number of passengers made for a more personal, intimate traveling experience. What impressed me the most (and, from the talk heard in the dining room and on the excursions, it would seem, all of the rest of the passengers) was the tremendous effort, energy, and--above all--enthusiasm that the cruise "Activities Coordinator" (I am not sure of his exact title) demonstrated day after day in carrying out the duties of his position. While I cannot recall his full name at present, I do recall that he was of British extraction and that his first name was Kean (Kane? Caine?). While my wife and I and the other three couples we traveled with on this cruise all enjoyed the excursions, meals, entertainment, and service experienced on this Viking tour, we all agreed that, more than any other single factor, the "Activities Coordinator" or "Cruise Director" was the most important factor in making the "Tulips and Windmills" cruise a memorable one, indeed. What a wonderful trip, my husband is a bilateral amputee, so the size of the ship and ease of the tours was just perfect for us. On a regular cruise ship it would take 30 to 60 minutes to get off the ship from our stateroom, (at least for us), but it took us 10 minutes to get from out stateroom and on the tour bus that was parked right outside the ships' dock. We loved having included tours as well as optional tours. The staff was so wonderful, and food was fabulous. You can't ask for better service that you get with Viking. Like I said, I wish we could go every year, because we would, we liked it so much. Did I mention the food? Well, it was tasty. we put on ten pounds, and are still trying to get it off, but I'd go again, and again, because it was so fun. Go, you'll love it. Read Less

I Iwould love to go on another cruise! I tell all my friends to take a cruise on Viking, it's the very best!! I took the 15-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, I loved everything, I would love to do it all again! I have been telling all my friends that they must have the Viking experience! I have an album of all the tours, I love looking at all the pictures and remembering of all the fun we had. It was the very most excellent of all the cruises! I would recommend to everyone! I have taken many Caribbean cruises, but would love to take one of your Viking ocean cruises, it's my dream! Read Less

I have to recognize that when I bought the Amsterdam to Budapest river cruise, I had a lot of reservations, especially about the size of the ship, as my wife and I have taken several ocean cruises in mega ships. After one day on the Viking Bragi, all my reservations were gone. The size was overcompensated with the personal treatment of all the crew; the excursions were well planned and very interesting. The food was excellent and with many options and variety. The activities on board were entertaining, the live music was soothing and above all, the smooth sailing was a plus. All personnel, specially the concierge was helpful at all times and went out of the way to address our needs. The Cruise Director, Jutta Hinterer made the trip perfect, advising all that requested help with knowledge and grace. We highly recommend Viking River Cruise to all that want to enjoy the sights and have a restful vacation. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the length,15 days and the number of places we would get to visit, 4 countries. I would love to do it again. There was so much to enjoy that I'm sure we missed something! Good thing the majority of shore excursions required walking because the food was plentiful and delicious. The included and optional shore excursions were the history, art & architecture types that we love. All of our guides were very fluent in English and knew their topics well. We found the nightly newsletters of the next days events with suggestions for alternate activities invaluable. The booklet of the trips itinerary etc. sent ahead of the cruise was also invaluable. Wonderful crew that made the transition to another ship for the passengers, required due to high water, as smooth as silk. Viking arranged our air travel and transfers which saved me a lot of heartburn. I do wish the flight home had been more direct. Read Less

we would have preferred a bus between schiphol & ghent rather than flying to brussels. preCruise tours of ghent, bruges & amsterdam were wonderful; ms tineke vanDenbege was delightful & helpful providing continuity between ghent & amsterdam. the hotel accommodations in ghent & amsterdam were great. we had time before embarkation to visit keukenhof gardens on the last day of their season, & the vanGogh museum (we had already been to the rijksMuseum on a previous bike&barge trip). I would have liked a fitness option to theTours or an onBoard fitnessRoom; the ludwigSteig hike to the passau oberHaus was nice. most of the localTour guides were well informed, courteous & congenial. the marketTours & concerts were a welcome change. there was ample freeTime on shore with thePursers providing welcome guidance of local sightSeeing. we would have loved an interior tour of the parliament in budaPest. the vikingStaff @BUD was most helpful & unexpected. all the onBoard meals were great. freeSeating encouraged circulation. smaller guest population compared to oceanCruises is preferred. the preDinner orientation talks were informative. baggage handling @localHotels, embarkation & disembarkation was efficient & careFree. we are going on your lyon&provence riverCruise nxtMonth. The staff could not have been nicer. They were helpful when we ordered our cruise, we called several times with questions which were answered to our satisfaction, meals and waiters were excellent. There was lots of variety to choose from. The waiters were very attentive and fun loving. We enjoyed all of the excursions. They were all efficiently handled. Guides were very informative. We learned many things about Holland that we did not know before. We really enjoyed the coffee and pie with the family in Hoorn, Netherlands. Some complained about walking but we thought all of the walks were enjoyable walks for a couple in their late 70s. The highlight for us was touring the Keukenhof Tulip gardens. In spite of the rain the gardens were spectacular. We even did several scenic walks on our own which we enjoyed. The only negative was there were so many great excursions offered at the same time to choose from, so we had to make some hard choices which meant we missed some excursions we would like to have gone on. We would recommend Viking for a river cruise. We also appreciated the help at the airport upon arrival to Amsterdam. On departure the Viking representative was so helpful to us getting our boarding passes and to our gate. Read Less

Tulip time in Amsterdam. This was our first river cruise and we were thrilled. We extended before and after the cruise and were extremely impressed with the accommodations and the extra city tours arranged by Viking. The service was wonderful! The food was better than expected and the ports were a wonderful caption of the Netherlands. Viking personnel were very helpful and seemed to have our interest and enjoyment as a goal. Transportation to and from the city excursions was very well organized and smooth. The ship was comfortable and the number of passengers just the right size. We met any number of very likable new acquaintances and new friends. The ship's staff was personable and pleasant. We are already contemplating our next trip and will, of course, look at Viking when we choose a destination. Our thanks to Viking for making our trip one to remember. We will see you again! Read Less

Our trip started on the Shadi due to the low water issues. That was such a wonderful ship, the staff were excellent and we had so much fun. We just bonded with the staff and we were made to feel so special. Later we had to change ships to the Bradi, which was equally beautiful and the service was also excellent. The sailing was unbelievably smooth. I had to look out my window to see if we were REALLY moving along. The sites along the way were awesome. The information was great and we especially enjoyed the views along the Rhine, they were incredible. All the Castles and Cathedrals were so beautiful. In face EVERY THING was so awesome. The whole trip was so wonderful and so easy to do, I've recommended it HIGHLY to everyone I visit with. Read Less
