Our Program Director, David, was absolutely marvelous. He made the trip so personal and so special. Everyone loved him, especially his British accent. I would love to cruise with him again. All staff members - waiters, bartenders, hotel manager, housekeeping, etc. were 5-star. They provided personal, friendly, timely service. Each night the food was absolutely delicious and we loved all the varieties of wine available. Reviewing the posted dinner menu was something to look forward to every morning. Chef Marius was funny and entertaining. And all the soups were superb. We actually asked to meet the soup Chef because his selections were so tasty. We included soup with dinner each night. The excursions were entertaining and well organized. The tour guides were wonderful and provided a wealth of information. We especially loved the Nuremberg, Lippizzaner and wine excursions. This was the cruise of a lifetime and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Read Less

Everything about the Tulips and Windmills Cruise was great, beginning with the Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank Museum and several other museums we visited before the cruise. The ship and our cabin and private deck were spacious and lovely. The service provided by the crew and tour guides was excellent. All meals on the ship and at ports of call were delicious. The entertainment on the ship was great. I can't say enough about all the ports and shore excursions. They were so unique and interesting, we saw so many wonderful things. The Delft Porcelain Ware tour was really interesting watching some of the workers paint on the porcelain and see how all the process was completed. They really made lovely pieces and you could purchase some in the gift shop which I did! The Hoorn walking tour was interesting seeing all the old buildings. I could not walk all the way to the home-hosted visit but my daughter went and enjoyed the visit. I enjoyed sitting on a bench in front of the old church and watched the people go by. It was a lovely morning and I was able to take my time getting back to the ship. The tulips farm was really interesting, seeing how the tulips were harvested, taken to the processing barn and seeing the big automated machine that took the tulips through several operations and ending up fastened in small bunches ready to be shipped and sold. The old windmills were really beautiful. We went to Flanders Fields and one of the ladies from our ship was able to find the grave site of her uncle. This was a very beautiful and moving place to visit. We also visited a Castle, toured it and had a delicious lunch there. The Keukenhof Gardens were beautiful and there were beautiful tulip fields close to the Gardens. We also went to Paris after the cruise and saw Paris by night, did some touring on our own, and went to the Paris Cabaret and saw a wonderful show and has a delicious dinner. Read Less

The staff are great. The program director knew her job and did it well, she was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and many of the buildings and was entertaining. We looked forward to her talks every evening before dinner. She was also funny. The concierge was also very knowledgeable and extremely helpful to me. She actually made the trip a lot easier for me (I am handicapped). She was very friendly and also went above the call of duty to make my trip a great success. The dining staff and the bar tender were very good. They remembered my name and what I like to eat or drink and would automatically bring it when I walked into the room. They were very friendly. The food was great and very plentiful. At one port I did not disembark and actually got to watch the crew do their daily jobs. They work very hard and do an excellent job. Some were on the hands & knees cleaning the atrium floor among other things that had me very impressed. The ship was always very clean. The entertainment was interesting and while some of it was educational it was at the same time very funny. The pianist that played during the afternoon and evening was very good, as was his singing voice. I had absolutely NO complaints and would recommend this trip to anyone who loves to travel to see different things and places and anyone who wants to just relax and meet interesting people from around the world. The trip and the cruise line was great. From the time the plane landed in Amsterdam until the plane left Amsterdam to go home, it was a smooth and wonderful trip. Thank you Viking and all the Baldur Staff. It was great. I think everyone should travel Viking at least once in their lifetime. Read Less

I loved it. I love the river cruise because we are in a different port everyday. Plenty of free time to go out on your own. I am a huge history buff so being in Europe was awesome. I love it because on the river boat they are small and you get to meet all the other passengers. I found that it was every easy going and felt very at home. The crew was the best. The food was the best. I bought the extra drink package. That was a good deal. I could come back on board from site seeing and have a nice cold beer from the region. I live in Milwaukee WI so I had the best time trying the Belgium beers and German beers. Then I would get a late night cocktail before I went to bed. I don't like being on a cruise ship when you spend so many days at sea. You don't have that problem on a river cruise. It is the only way to go. The crew so so great and attentive and I think that is because you have a smaller group of passengers. I was on a cruise ship four years ago with a few thousand people, a couple of pools, bars, restaurants etc and I didn't have nearly as fun as I did on the Wind Mill and Tulips river cruise. I am hoping to come back to Europe in 2018 and do another Viking River Cruise. Read Less

My deceased husband's brother & wife invited my daughter & I to go on this trip with them. My husband & I have lived for a while in the Netherlands and was anxious to return. I loved the service of all the ships employees and the cleanliness of everything. The service in dining room, cabin, & entertainment was far above excellent. When embarking on a walking tour in one town, I realized that I was not going to be able to do it (I am handicapped) after about one block, I turned to go back the ship when an employee volunteered to get a wheelchair for me and then push me all through the walking tour. I was unbelievably grateful for that kindness as I really wanted to see some of the places that my husband & I used to visit while living here. The dining room service was outstanding with the employees being extremely friendly, always remembered your name, what you like to drink or eat, and where in the room you preferred to sit and with whom, they were very funny as well as entertaining. The food was also the greatest. In the lounge the bartender always remembered your name, what you like to drink and your cabin number. The evening entertainment was always fun and various talks were extremely interesting and informative. The ports of call, while I have been to all of them many times while living here, were great and the tour guides were extremely informative. It is wonderful to have to only unpack once and yet travel several countries. I do not feel as though I missed much of the country while sailing at night and spending all day on shore. It was a wonderful first river cruise experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would and have recommended this river cruise and company to several people. You are able to get close to the sites and to see whatever there is to see on both sides of the ship while sailing. The long boat does not hold thousands of people, which is wonderful and makes everything much more personal. We traveled on the Baldur and were very happy with the ship, the staff, and the cruise in general. I have even made, what I think will be, a life-long friend, while on board the ship. I could not ask for more. It was the best cruise I have taken in many, many years. Read Less

My husband and I and two friends from work always wanted to do a river cruise. When this became available, we jumped at it. And glad we did. This was a wonderful experience. The longboat was gorgeous, the staff was amazing, the accommodations are top notch, the food was fantastic, the excursions were perfect. I would recommend this to anybody and everybody that asked. We had a suite and our friends had a stateroom. The accommodations are sufficient, although the stateroom doesn't give you much moving around space. But you don't need it. If you aren't on an excursion, you are eating, or on the sun deck watching the scenery, or in the lounge having a nice drink and a chat with friends. Computers are available. Books are available. The entire experience was one I will never forget and we are definitely going to do it again. Next time I may look into the ocean cruises. I've done NCL and Royal Caribbean, so Viking is next. This was our first Viking River Cruise and we depending strongly on reviews to choose our trip. In the course of our week long cruise we found that most of the other passengers had taken a previous river cruise with Viking. We found that we'd have to agree with their confidence. The first point to mention is that most of the Viking Long Ships are very new. The ship we sailed on, the Viking Baldur, was about a year and half old. The accommodations are functional and nice, if not overly large. There is a lot of attention to comfort and small touches to making time in the room pleasant. Don't expect to spend a lot of time in the room. The food was plentiful and nicely done. The service staff was so good that it added to the enjoyment of our meals and I cannot say enough in praising all of the staff in helping to make our trip better. We arranged a private side trip that deviated from the cruise schedule and the concierge did a very good job in helping us plan the side trip. The activities were very good with only a couple of minor suggestions for improvement. We were on the Legends of the Rhine cruise. The second day featured a trip to a World War II museum in Overloon, The Netherlands. If you are a war buff you might find it enjoyable, but I think the general reaction was that there was probably a better way to spend the time. The other minor suggestion is that on an excursion to Remagen, which was new on the tour, we arrived in time to visit a historic church, but the tour guide made that the end of the tour in that city. That meant the church had closed. It would have been easy to begin at the church since the bus was parked a block away. The tour guides were knowledgeable and there was often free time to explore on our own. I might have enjoyed extra time in some of the cities we visited, particularly Cochem and Heidelberg, but the tour company cannot anticipate differences in what all their customers will find most interesting. It should be noted that we began in Amsterdam and finished our cruise in Frankfurt. People making the cruise the following week did the trip in reverse, beginning in Frankfurt. Read Less

Our 30thieth anniversary needed to be something special and the advertisements for Viking Cruises looked as if a river cruise would fit the bill. Booking was easy and talking with Walter and making the arrangements was an indication that this trip would be well planned and flawless. It was. We started with 2 days in Bruges before boarding the Baldur in Amsterdam. Everything was taken care of from our arrival at the airport in Brussells to checking into our hotel. The tours were interesting and informative and we didn't think things could get better. When we boarded the longboat in Amsterdam our expectations were exceeded. The stateroom was roomy and comfortable and the lounge and other public rooms were beautiful and inviting. The food was incredible and the wine was so good I was glad it kept flowing at dinner. Our tours at the stops along the Rhine were conducted by tour guides who knew their history as well as exciting stories to tell at each turn. We enjoyed the company of many different people on board at meals and evening activities. The saddest part was realizing that the trip was ending. Everyone on board had done their utmost to make us comfortable and feel pampered and the staffs attention to detail was evident. It was a trip well worth the money and the perfect memory for our 30 years together! Read Less

We enjoyed the cruise immensely. We have had about 6 previous ocean cruises on big ships and couldn't believe how much more comfortable the smaller ride was. There were quite a few times that we wished we could have had more time in port, i.e. overnight, etc., but recognize that would either extend the cruise or cut out some of the days in other ports. Everything about the cabin was good, the meals were good and once we found how we wanted to relax on board, that was good. We were disappointed at the lack of time available to sit up on top and enjoy cruising during the days from up there. Also could have used some public addressing of things as we went by to let us know where we were and what we were passing....know that others would probably preferred the silence, but not us!
