We lived in Germany several years ago and had traveled to many places, but we had not traveled to Eastern European locations. Budapest was wonderful, so pretty, all lit up at night. We stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel until we boarded our Ship on Sunday. Viking had an overall tour of the city and we also had free time to explore. Right here I have to say that Viking does a great job with advertising. But when the rubber meets the road, you are being herded into buses on all your little side trips with 44 other people. That part of the trip got old very quickly for me and was just a reminder of the sardine-can airline trip over to Budapest that we endured. I don't know what I was expecting, but I guess I was thinking we'd be all going in different directions in small vans and that it would be a bit more personal. The food and the staff were both excellent. The service and the room were wonderful. Even the internet connections were pretty good. No complaints. A small Ship allows people more opportunities to get to know each other and that part of it we loved. We met some great folks. Viking has staff all over Europe and you get met at your airport, you get delivered to your hotel...wonderful. They take care of all of it for you. The Budapest to Bucharest tour was "more evocative" as Rick Steves would say. We weren't seeing the Vatican or the Parthenon. We were exploring the mood of former communist countries and how they were doing. A lot of our sites were relatively unknown to us. All were interesting and well prepared. In Croatia we even got to visit with locals and see how they live and what they have done with their lives and their homes since all the wars. Budapest's beautiful buildings and chain bridge were lovely. Bucharest's Parliament was beautiful and to learn of the brutal Ceausescu regime under communism was interesting. Viking brought lecturers on board the ship and also folk dancers. So nice. So, in summary, I loved the trip. My only objection was the sardine-can daily tours. I just wish there was a nicer way to get folks around for these tours. Read Less

Viking Atla. Budapest to Nueremburg. Embark 4.30.17. Well designed contemporary river cruiser. Very clean and well appointed public spaces. Superior crew service from ships captain to bsu drivers. Professional and courteous without over stepping boundries. Matri 'd and primary waiter were exceptional. Seems to be a "clean" boat re virus control. Very well prepared entrees and buffet. Reasonable selection. Restaurant team aware of and accomodating to dietary limitations. Much of this is a matter of taste and experience. We were well pleased. Shore excursions as expected are thumbnail sketches. Guides seem well vetted by Viking. We chose a private guide for Prague prior to departure. Comparable in expense to Viking group rates. Good decision. Well organized excursions. Viking transfer to Prague was seamless with typical fine service. Viking desk within the hotel provided essential concierge services. Very helpful on day of transfer to airport with VAT process. This at 4:30 AM. I have traveled to the Contenient 40 / 50 times for business, 4/5 times recreation. Have avoided cruises. This was my/our best overall experience. Read Less

We started on the trip on the Jarl river boat because there was a problem with a river lock that kept our original boat the Alta from making it to our starting point. We were not happy to learn after day two that we would have to change ships part way through our river cruise. NO PROBLEM Viking did everything in there power to make it as easy a switch as they could. The problem was beyond their control. We found the food to be very good, the staff to be very accommodating, the tours to be excellent. The program director was very informative about the different cities we visited and Organization was top notch. I thought this would be somewhat laid back on a river cruise, but we kept very busy pretty much of the time. All the transportation on the ground was in very nice buses, and the tour guides that Viking provided did an excellent job telling us about the history pertaining to the area we were visiting. We stayed over in Prague for three additional days after the river cruise having Vikng make the arrangements. The Palace hotel was fantastic, and our stay in Prague was Wonderful. This was was a very nice trip that I would recommend it. We had read a lot of mixed reviews on this cruise and cruise line. I think a lot of opinions depend on how picky you want to be. We found everyone working on the ship to be very pleasant and helpful. Read Less

Great overall experience and very educational. Budapest is a wonderful city with many great outdoor cafes and restaurants. We visited many great cities along the Danube to include Vienna, Passau,Nurenberg and finally the October fest in Munich which did not disappoint. This was our 2nd Viking river cruise with the 1st being the Rhine river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland. We find September a great time of year to be traveling the waterways of Europe due to local wine festivals ongoing at each port of call. A great overall experience! The ship Atla and it`s crew were very accommodating and we received wonderful service with accomodations being very appropriate .The ship was very well maintained and extremely clean which we hold to high standards. Our tour guides were all very well versed and extremely knowledgeable making our travel an everlasting memory. We are anticipating another river cruise in the near future and certainly will have Viking in our forseeable future plans.Thank You! Read Less

Although our river cruise did not start off on a positive note because of low water levels and we had to change boats twice, I found Viking to be very efficient in ensuring that everything went smoothly. Stay on both Viking boats (Atla & Jarl) were enjoyable; both cabin rooms were comfortable; both staff were friendly and helpful; food was a bit on the salty side on Atla though; tour guides were excellent and provided detailed history of many of the cities; loved the headsets which allowed you to hear the guide even if you wanted to 'wander' a bit; relaxed and casual dining atmosphere. Onboard 'entertainment' did not interest us too much, but we were comfortable with retiring to our cabin to watch TV. It was a 'pain' to keep packing and unpacking between the hotels and two boats, but Viking personnel kept everything running very smoothly. This was our first river cruise and we would like to try in again, perhaps during another time of the year when the water levels are more consistent and when we can access the upper decks more. Friends took one and recommended it.we celebrated our 50th and had never taken a cruise.everything was exceptional except for the fact that the water level had dropped and we had to be bussed to and from the boat and the next location for the last three days so we spent hours on the bus and were unable to enjoy the cruise down the danube for the last three days. if we had been told in advance that there was a probability or even a possibility then we probably would have rebooked for a different time. the trip was expensive and we were looking forward to the cruise down the danube and the various sites along the way.other than that glitch everything else was great. I think Viking did what they could to make the trip enjoyable under the circumstances. The accommodations were excellent as was the room service. The meals were great. The person in charge of activities, Mario, was there all the time and kept us informed and was great. The food was exceptional.i had a dietary restriction and the maitre d checked with me daily about the menu and was attentive. I never missed a meal and enjoyed every one. All of the shore excursions were done in small groups with headsets that made it easy to follow the guide. The guides that we had were exceptional. On our last night in nurenburg after a lengthy bus ride we were rewarded with a concert at the hotel by opera singers.finally, as we arrived at the nurenburg airport there was a Viking agent at the bus to guide us.i forgot to mention that on arrival at Budapest there were Viking agents to get us on the bus to our hotel.
