I have been to several countries since 1992, but never to Hungary, Austria and Germany. The cruise was wonderful traveling along the Danube River. It was wonderful not having to always leave the ship to see so many interesting sights. We had an outside balcony so we could sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. We really liked the optional tours we took by bus. I had a bi-lateral knee operation two years ago and the walking tour was excellent, as I was in the leisure strollers group and I used my cane. The guides were so well versed and ready to answer any questions we had. The food was excellent and we had many dining choices such as buffet, sit down dinners and snacks and we got to choose from standard choices like hamburgs and sandwiches and ethnic foods, like Hungarian Goulash. I taught a Foods class and attended the Culinary Institute in Hyde park, N.Y., so i know what a good chef we had. I love classical music and the concert by the residence Orchestra at a castle in Vienna was wonderful. I also taught History at one time and the trip to the courtroom where the Nazis were on trial was spell binding. The guide was such an excellent speaker and during the hour we were there, the guide was spell binding. The service was excellent and if we wanted anything, such as more sauce for a meat, it arrived immediately after it was requested. I certainly would go again. I haven't been to Sweden and my Paternal Grand-Mother was born in Stockholm, so Id like go go there. Read Less

Viking Cruises now has a loyal customer for life! Not only was the cruise AMAZING! But I feel like you learn a lot about a company based off of how they deal with obscacles. Four days before our cruise started, we were informed that the water was low and we would be aboard Ship Jarl (not original ship) instead of Ship Atla (orginal ship) and that there was a possibilty that if the water didn't rise, we would have to swap from the Jarl to the Atla.  How fabulous is it that the moment they knew of the issue, they informed us! When we got on the Jarl, our WONDERFUL Cruise Director, Mario, told us what he knew, what we could expect if we had to switch ships, and when he'd give us our next update. They were honest and kept us informed as they promised. Where we did have to switch ships, because mother nature wasn't in our favor, they did EVERYTHING they could to make the change comfortable. Mario worked countless hours with other individuals behind the scenes to get us to the Atla with as much ease as they could provide. All inconveniences were minimal. We had to pack and unpack an additional time. And if you can even call it an inconvenience, we were able to take the most beautiful country side drive through Germany for 3 hours. We saw farms, villages on the hill side, and gorgeous churches and their different architecture. AND a tour that they thought they'd have to cancel, Mario worked it out so we'd be able to do the tour at a later time after we reached the Atla. We were so impressed by how they handled the issue. And it's worth noting that there was another cruise line (that I can't remember the name of) that wasn't able to fulfill on their itinerary because of the low water issue as there isn’t much you can do when it’s a Mother Nature issue. Viking did everything in their power to keep us on track and they did a phenomenal job. The water level was out of their control, but they took control of the issue and provided solution after solution to keep us happy and comfortable. Now, that I've gushed a bit about how they handled that issue (and I could gush more!), I want to gush about the boat, food, staff, and tours. Boat - Easy to navigate. Even the smallest room felt open and roomy. The upper deck was perfect way to end the day. We’d watch the country side as we talked and had our evening tea. THE FOOD!! We were so fat and happy after our trip. The dinners were especially delicious and we loved that it was local cusiune!! So nummy!! Our waiters would give us their recommendations and they never steered us wrong. There were times when all the desserts looked so scrumptious, we got them all!! And had our bellies not been so happily extended, we would have had more!! Staff - Oh, the staff. It didn't matter if we were on the Jarl or Atla, the people were fabulous. Attentive. Funny. Sweet. Caring. Personable. Informative. They made life on the boat a home. We loved how quickly we were able to make jokes with them. They always remembered our drink preferences for meals and would cater their recommendations based off of what we said we’d liked from previous meals. When we’d retire to bed, a blanket that I brought from home was always folded in a new way. My favorite was when Alexander made it into a bow tie! It was a wonderful environment to be in. A huge thanks to Dragan, Connie, Jayson, Radu, Alexander, Skiffy, Emanuel, and Nikolas. They’re who we were able to personally get to know during our trip. And where we were able to get to know them, every person on those ships deserve recognition for how hard they worked to give other guests the same attention and care our little boat family gave us! Tours - Viking picked the BEST people to give tours. They were local to the area and they where very knowledgable and passionate about what we did. It was great to talk to them as they had multiple generations of family that lived in the area and were able to tell us about their own history. No book or class will ever provoke feelings or thoughts like walking around the cities with people who know not only the history stories, but their family’s history as well. You appreciate it so much more. Having that opportunity gave the cities a whole new life and meaning to me. And whether it was the included or optional tours, you can't go wrong. You learn history on such a personal level. Read Less

We selected this cruise after taking advice that the Danube was a great first time river cruise and had heard good things from other Viking customers. The cruise began the day of my 65th birthday and we spent a night in Nuremberg before the cruise embarkation. Everything went smoothly. The Cabin was good and the Crew very friendly and helfpul. The initial briefing was good and afterward we had a superb dinner. The Chef was Carlito and he and his staff did a fine job all week. Meals were served at the table and I much preferred this to the Buffet service you often find on cruises where there is a temptation to eat too much. Waiters and waitresses were prompt and efficient. There was a regular menu, special menus for the day and a regional menu which we opted for most of the time. Beer and wine were free at Lunch and Dinner. The cooking was of a high standard. About 70% of the passengers were from the US with perhaps 15% from the UK and another 10% from Canada. We were in a very select group from Europe. Everyone was friendly. Most people seemed to fall into the 55 - 75 age group and mostly couples. Entertainment was provided in the lounge in the evening, but we are not lounge sorts of people. I heard that the entertainment was good. Not any fitness facilities, but the daily walks provided exercise. The boat went from Nuremberg to Regensburg, Passau, Krems, Vienna and Budapest. A tour was included at each stop and there were optional tours at various prices. The tour director was Mario and he did a very good job with a briefing and often a talk on a particular topic before dinner each evening. The tour guides were good and you had a radio with an earphone for the tours. Mobility within this age group can vary a lot and after the first day we had different designated groups: easy, regular and enhanced for the tours. Stops on the walking tours usually had seating which was appreciated. You only had to walk about 15 minutes before a stop and comfort breaks were arranged. We visited Nuremberg, Regensburg, Krems, Vienna and Budapest. For us the best days were at Nuremberg and Budapest and the tour of Gottweig Abbey in Austria although all were good. On the evening in Budapest we had a special cruise to see Budapest at night. Beautiful We took the 2 night extension in Budapest and it was well worth it. We stayed at the Hilton on Castle Hill. The room was superb with a fantastic view of Pest. We visited several museums, the Great Synagogue and the Parliament buildings. When booking places make sure that the staff know you are an EU citizen as they will assume your are American and not entitled to EU discounts. All in all a great holiday. The Viking experience and attention to detail is fantastic. We would take a Viking River Cruise again, but next year we will head for a Viking Ocean Cruise. We particularly liked the inclusive nature of the holiday with a tour included each day as well as beer and wine at lunch and dinner. At the end of the trip the only extras we had to pay were the gratuities for the crew and a few euros for laundry. Highly Recommended. Read Less

Our family, my two sisters, my brother and his wife, took our Mom on this cruise, as she had been begging for several years, slipping cruise brochures in our mail slots for many years! Our Dad passed away from Alzheimers, the previous summer, so we decide to surprise her with the cruise. Our favorite part of the cruise was Nikolai, our server who thankfully we met on the first day!!! He was absolutely incredible, speaking in several different languages to our family as we speak Russian, as well as English and conversing with our Mother, who speaks Spanish also. We felt as if he were part of our family by the end of the cruise! He was super funny, extremely attentive and perfect at his job! We also loved Zoran, Adam, Sorin and Ivaylo, they all went out of their way to make it a perfect experience for all of us!!! It was clearly evident that all of the staff, from the Captain on down to our housekeeper, took pride in all that they did for all of us! Four of us had the smaller rooms and my Mother and older sister had the larger suite, all of which were beautiful and luxurious! The best all around Customer Service and cruising Experience ever! We looked at 3-4 cruise lines before selecting Viking, a big part of the decision being value for the price. Except for the weather, which we certainly can't hold Viking responsible, everything was great - the accommodations, the food, the service, the tours .... Viking thinks of everything. My wife and I are fussy eaters, but there wasn't a single meal where we weren't able to find something to satisfy us. My wife suffers from motion sickness, which is why we've never been on an ocean cruise, but figured we'd gamble on a river cruise. In order to even know the ship was moving, you had to be out on deck. No vibration, no engine noise! To give you an idea as to how much we liked it, in the literature prior to sailing, Viking recommended a tip for the program director and crew, and I thought it was a little high. But when we were checking out on the last day, I took the recommendation and added another 20%. I don't recommend this for families, as the clientele definitely leaned toward senior citizens, the average age probably mid 60s. All the tour guides were knowledgeable and personable. Not sure if I would pay the extra for a veranda, because we rarely set foot on it, at least a little because of the weather. Plus, if you're in your cabin, you're probably sleeping. Our dilemma now is deciding which Viking cruise to take next. Read Less

We had sailed with Viking River Cruises in Russia, and we knew to expect luxurious accommodations, great food and excellent tour offerings. The Danube tour didn't disappoint. The service was superb -- personable, attentive, helpful. The extensions were particularly fine. Our pre-tour extension in Ljubliana was fantastic. The guide was extremely knowledgeable (an art PhD) and attentive to every detail of our stay. The tour of Lake Bleb was a real standout. The Prague tour was good but not as remarkable. Because of the number of participants, the service was very impersonal and at times disorganized. The city itself made up for it. You should definitely take the two-hour city tour offered by the hotel. Riding in vintage open-topped cars, you can ride throughout the city, including places off-limits to other vehicles. We were very fortunate to be upgraded to an Explorer Suite, and they're worth the price. The room, with balconies on two sides, are a true luxury -- spacious, well-appointed, well-stocked with fruit and drinks. They're also very private and quiet, and a wonderful way to watch the countryside. Read Less

We went on the Viking because our mom had a river cruise on her "bucket list". We found the ship to be very clean and easy to get around. We liked the idea of having less passengers in ratio to staff. Our staff was very, very good. They learned your name and used it when ever they saw you. The cruise director did a super job of explaining what each days activity would be. They had alot of extra trips you could take in addition to the ones provided in your trip. At each port our cruise director had an evening planned around where we where (i.e. october fest, opera, german dancing). The food planned by the chef was great and he fit it into the area we were in. We would say that if you want to do something like this, then join the Viking gang because you will have a super time. After receiving a brochure in the mail, we decided we would love to sail the Danube. We had heard so many wonderful things about Budapest and Prague and decided to do extensions in both cities pre/post cruise. From the moment we arrived in Budapest, Viking had a presence, providing information about the city, restaurants, excursions and the upcoming cruise. We had three wonderful days in Budapest - I cannot wait to visit again! The people, the food, the sights are all amazing in that city! We boarded the ship mid-day on day 3 and were greeted by an ingratiating and fun-loving crew! They made the trip so memorable with their service and their antics. We have several pictures in our vacation book of the crew that served us nonstop! I have never been treated with such grace and compassion. I can only think that Viking does a superb job in selecting and cultivating the best people - they must be very happy with their employer because they serve them well! Our first night on the ship, the captain took us for a night ride up and down the Budapest waterfront. All of the buildings were lit spectacularly and the lights reflecting in the water was breathtaking - a very memorable start to an unforgettable cruise. We stopped in Vienna and enjoyed several excursions in the city. Hard to rate one over the other because they were all wonderful but the Ring excursion was something not to be missed! These are the events I hold most memorable: the little sausage shop on the banks of the Danube in Regensberg - I cannot find anything better anywhere!; the bike ride out of Krems into the local countryside; the Danube narrows and the Abbey; the castle at Nuremberg and the WWII tour; and Prague - what a wonderful city to explore and dine in - the people are so welcoming - don't miss St Charles Bridge and the castle! What I would do differently - I would spend more time exploring the little villages and less time on formal excursions; I would make sure to see all of the stops (we went to Salzburg on a day trip - wonderul trip! - but we missed seeing anything in Passau because of that excursion and I hear it was a gem - so sorry to have missed it; Viking took care of our luggage throughout the trip - all arrangements made to get us to/from the airports and a Viking local made sure that we were able to navigate the airport for the trip home including the VAT desk. The exceeded my expectations for this vacation! We have booked a cruise up the Rhine in 2019 - I cannot wait to travel with Viking again! Read Less

European Christmas markets, beautiful Danube Austrian and Bavarian locations, sailing up river thru some 26 locks passing Austria and into Bavarian Germany, so enticingly promised by the highly effective and persuasive Viking ads. How did the cruise pan out? Just fine! Nearly completely met the promises, not easy to do… This off season cruise incorporated the usual highly rated Romantic Danube agenda with the first week of Christmas markets in the heart of Danube gemutlichkeit (good feeling). It didn't hurt that we were lucky with both river water level (not too high or low, not always the case in past years), and weather i.e., cold but not rainy, just some delightful white flakes drifting down. Could one ask for more?? We don't think so. Now I’ve gotta say: a big plus to the overall good feeling for us was the Atla’s 90% male crew led by a chef presenting consistently interesting, delicious, well served food. The only better food afloat per us might be Crystal, out of 20+ ocean and river ships we’ve been on. The chef, and Viking’s well planned menus, consistently fed the 186 guests wonderfully varied, fresh, well prepared, interesting selections, mostly with decent wine. Perhaps actually this was the biggest key to success of the cruise. A second was Super Mario, the tour and entertainment guru. The Captain and boat crew also all were efficient, aided by no shortcuts in the design and execution of the boat with its very well equipped cockpit. Our Ukrainian captain timed arrivals and departures well to maximize time in port plus one day doing daylight sailing thru the beautiful Wachau valley of Austria. All not easy to orchestrate given that we were going upstream on the fast flowing Danube with so many locks to negotiate, all while needing to fit in with commercial traffic. Truth be told, if this is a fair example, (and it is our first time aboard Viking) they have this river cruising thing down cold. Personalized attention to detail again and again starts at the top with the CEO and his wife, the sparkly and appealing Karin. Rooms, meals, tours, places to dock, festive seasonal touches, a special arrangement with a wonderful monastery and seasonal cooking demo examples, special music just for the boat in a classic theatre in Vienna, so helpful service desk and an offset hall room plan, and working elevator for the more mobility impaired. Really hard to see how one could ask for more, different or better. While we're also fans of Avalon with their larger rooms, from past cruises, Viking certainly now has won our business and surely will see us again on the rivers...and maybe as ocean cruisers on their new ships as well. Tip: we arranged our own to/from transportation. Viking did so for most others and had a problem with Lufthansa pilots going on strike. Lesson: pay a little extra ($50 I think) for the Viking option to use your own travel agent who can argue for and help to arrange the most favorable routing. Read Less

We had traveled with Viking once before in 2013. Even though it was a kind of working trip for us with the Singing Men of Texas on the Black Sea, it was wonderful. Once again we found the service of all working for Viking is above and beyond anything we expected. Everyone is so helpful and kind. The whole ship is immaculate! All the waiters, tables, rooms, everything was spotless and perfect. The planned tours were very informative and well organized. All the tour guides were knowledgeable and their English perfect. Our last guide in Vienna to the Palace must have been tired or stressed out, because she fell short in the pleasant category. She seemed a little bored with all of us and in a hurry to be rid of the inconvenience. But considering this, only one, out of all the people we met - commendable. Also had a guide in Regensburg, Germany with too many political views concerning American politics, but we just laughed him off knowing he was not in the "know". Political views should be kept to oneself especially concerning a country not your own. All in all, YES, we hope to be able to tour with Viking again. Wonderful experience and one everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. Read Less

Grade A service, Grade A logistics, Grade A tours, Grade A optional land excursions, Grade A food, and Grade A entertainment. The food was superb and for me being on a salt restricted diet, the maitre'd sought me out at breakfast and would give me the lunch menu and dinner menu for the day. On the left side are the daily selections and on the right there are the standbys available every night, e.g., steak, fish, chicken, pasta. I was able to pick my daily meals with no salt....especially made for me. There were others who were diabetic and those needing a gluten free meal. The land tours were great and divided into groups from easy walking to longer more intense walking trips. The guides were local to the town we were visiting and they spoke English very well. They definitely deserved the tips that were offered. I can't think of one thing that I would have changed. The service was impeccable. First night we had a tour of the river lights in Budapest. It was chilly when we went to the upper deck, but they were right there with blankets and a tray of apricot schnapps. Nice touch!! Read Less

It took ten years for him to have the courage to try another cruise...but he loved the river cruise. For a senior with some health problems, the river cruise was relaxing and fun....a perfect balance of sight seeing and relaxing. He will definitely be up for another river cruise! This is a great trip for a photographer as my husband enjoyed taking photos of the sunsets and the lights at night in Budapest. The trip can accommodate any level of physical activity...they had special tours without much walking for those who had limitations due to bad knees and hips etc. There is no reason to stop traveling with a river cruise. It was a nice clean ship. Plenty of open, comfortable areas to relax while on the ship. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. Overall they gave incredible service. Clear information given on activities and times for each day, with added tips for preparing for weather or difficulty on each day's excursions. We were traveling with a wheelchair, which didn't get transferred with one of our flights. The Concierge was wonderful about keeping us updated on the status as he worked with the airline to get it caught up with the ship. I would have preferred more time sailing during the day to enjoy the sites from the river. Having a veranda wasn't much use the multiple times we were stacked with other ships when docked. If I do another river cruise, I would probably not spend the money to have one of those rooms. I wanted to sit out and enjoy the views of the river and shore, not another ship. The meals were a wonderful mix of selections. The included excursions were great to get a taste of each city. Most of the city guides were enjoyable, besides being informative. I have filled out reviews two other times on this one cruise I went on. I took my son, daughter, her husband, their two children 13 and 16 at the time - First week of August 2016, on the Danube River Cruise. It was a convenient meeting with a Viking rep in Nuremburg. The staff on board was so polite and helpful. We all loved the walking tours. It was nice to have a few hours in several ports as my "kids" really liked exploring during that time. The cabin was just fine - though it was the lowest price. It was always clean and neatened up for us. I have food allergies and was very thoroughly attended to by the chef, the cooks and the wait staff. So many special dishes were made for me and were delicious and well enjoyed. I would go again on Viking. In fact a few months after that Danube trip I made reservations for a Caribbean cruise and will take my son (53) along again. We travel in January 2018. Wanted to get the most out of our first trip to Europe and were able to add three days in Prague as a pre-cruise destination. Prague was definitely worth the visit. Great hotel, food, people, cultural sites, etc. We also enjoyed our optional excursion to Kutna Hora. Viking handled transfers from the airport to the hotel wonderfully. Similarly the transfer to the Atla was well handled. Because of high waters in the Nuremberg area, we actually boarded in St. Anna. The crew was wonderful in getting our baggage on board as the docking area was a bit rustic. We really enjoyed sailing on the Atla as the crew and staff were extremely attentive to out needs. The boat was immaculate and our room was compact but comfortable, satisfying all our needs. The dining experience was great. We enjoyed our breakfasts, lunches and dinners and the service was just right! The cruise director's and concierge's staff were extremely helpful in organizing the daily tours, filling us in on what we would be seeing. We went on all of the included tours and the guides did a wonderful job of explaining the local sites and culture. Our tours included the daily city tours of Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau, Gottweig Abbey, Vienna and Budapest. In addition we booked optional tours of the concert at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna and the thermal spas in Budapest. Our concierge was extremely helpful in helping me to rent a bicycle in Passau, and arranging to rebook our flight home from Budapest to NJ when Air France went on strike during the weekend of June 11/12.The on-board entertainment was enjoyable and just right considering how active we were with our daily tours. As I said earlier, this was our first time to Europe and my wife was hesitant to go on this trip based on things in the news and its cost. After we went, she said that she'd never anticipated how wonderful an experience it would be. We feel it was well worth the cost, and we hope to return to Europe soon. We appreciated the glimpses into the different life-styles in each country. The best part of the cruise was our fellow passengers. Almost all were open to greeting one another and extending friendships. The crew was of course, fantastic. A wonderful example of crew humor was my husband remarking to a crew member that if he had a long straw he could more easily reach the wine bottle only to have the crew member return minutes later with a long straw made by connecting a number of shorter straws! The tours provided an opportunity to see for ourselves the progress being made in each country. We were appreciative of each country and all but overwhelmed by Budapest's clean streets, buildings, buses, streetcars and structures. It was terrific. Read Less

This was our second Viking River Cruise, the first was Waterways of the Tsars from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Both cruises were excellent. The service from the cleaning staff, restaurant staff, tour director and local guides was superb. Our stateroom on the Atla was a Veranda Suite which was very nice because we had our own private sitting area in addition the the bedroom. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of our rooms on both of our Viking Cruises. The ships are small, holding less than 220 passengers. We liked this as it made for a much more relaxed atmosphere. Also because of the small numbers it was very easy to get on and off the ship and into the various sites that we visited. This cruise took us to Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary and the Czech Republic because we extended our cruise at the end to include Prague. We had excellent local guides in each port. All of these countries were at one time Communist and it was very interesting to hear, from a local, what it was like to live under Communism in each country. We loved both of our Viking Cruises and have booked the Grand European Tour for this Oct. Viking River Cruises is a class act and we would highly recommend them. Read Less
