Although our river cruise did not start off on a positive note because of low water levels and we had to change boats twice, I found Viking to be very efficient in ensuring that everything went smoothly. Stay on both Viking boats (Atla & Jarl) were enjoyable; both cabin rooms were comfortable; both staff were friendly and helpful; food was a bit on the salty side on Atla though; tour guides were excellent and provided detailed history of many of the cities; loved the headsets which allowed you to hear the guide even if you wanted to 'wander' a bit; relaxed and casual dining atmosphere. Onboard 'entertainment' did not interest us too much, but we were comfortable with retiring to our cabin to watch TV. It was a 'pain' to keep packing and unpacking between the hotels and two boats, but Viking personnel kept everything running very smoothly. This was our first river cruise and we would like to try in again, perhaps during another time of the year when the water levels are more consistent and when we can access the upper decks more. Friends took one and recommended it.we celebrated our 50th and had never taken a cruise.everything was exceptional except for the fact that the water level had dropped and we had to be bussed to and from the boat and the next location for the last three days so we spent hours on the bus and were unable to enjoy the cruise down the danube for the last three days. if we had been told in advance that there was a probability or even a possibility then we probably would have rebooked for a different time. the trip was expensive and we were looking forward to the cruise down the danube and the various sites along the way.other than that glitch everything else was great. I think Viking did what they could to make the trip enjoyable under the circumstances. The accommodations were excellent as was the room service. The meals were great. The person in charge of activities, Mario, was there all the time and kept us informed and was great. The food was exceptional.i had a dietary restriction and the maitre d checked with me daily about the menu and was attentive. I never missed a meal and enjoyed every one. All of the shore excursions were done in small groups with headsets that made it easy to follow the guide. The guides that we had were exceptional. On our last night in nurenburg after a lengthy bus ride we were rewarded with a concert at the hotel by opera singers.finally, as we arrived at the nurenburg airport there was a Viking agent at the bus to guide us.i forgot to mention that on arrival at Budapest there were Viking agents to get us on the bus to our hotel. This was our second Viking River Cruise, the first was Waterways of the Tsars from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Both cruises were excellent. The service from the cleaning staff, restaurant staff, tour director and local guides was superb. Our stateroom on the Atla was a Veranda Suite which was very nice because we had our own private sitting area in addition the the bedroom. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of our rooms on both of our Viking Cruises. The ships are small, holding less than 220 passengers. We liked this as it made for a much more relaxed atmosphere. Also because of the small numbers it was very easy to get on and off the ship and into the various sites that we visited. This cruise took us to Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary and the Czech Republic because we extended our cruise at the end to include Prague. We had excellent local guides in each port. All of these countries were at one time Communist and it was very interesting to hear, from a local, what it was like to live under Communism in each country. We loved both of our Viking Cruises and have booked the Grand European Tour for this Oct. Viking River Cruises is a class act and we would highly recommend them. Read Less
