We have had a river cruise on out "bucket list" for several years. Viking's reputation led us to booking with them. We were not disappointed. We have shared the experience of our cruise with whomever will listen, and praise Viking at every level. The cruise, accommodations, tours, food and entertainment created an overall experience that we will never forget. Not to mention a crew that attended to every detail and more. The environment made it so easy to meet and enjoy new friends on tour and on the ship. Every question answered (and many before they were even asked). Would we go again... absolutely. Other cruise lines also have good reputations, but we would not risk changing, knowing what capable hands we would be in with Viking. We did not have to worry about anything. Every transfer, tour, etc. was organized and implemented flawlessly. All we id is small and have fun. Viking is the River Cruise line to choose... no doubt! Read Less

We were not told that there was a broken lock preventing us from leaving the ugly canal filled with factories in Nuremberg until the second day of the cruise. The staff was nice but made it clear that they had absolutely no power to help us. They were vague and noncommittal and made it seem as if we were crazy to be upset about being bussed for several hours to see the sites. The Viking Atla stayed parked in the dismal canal for four days. Each night we were given a vague update. At these meetings the waiters offered drinks. We assumed that Viking would pick up the tab considering the information they were imparting to us, but we were told the drinks would be charged to our room. Eventually, we were taken on a 4 1/2 hour bus trip from Nuremberg to Austria to meet our new boat, the Viking Jarl. The bus we were on was not a Viking bus. The seats were tiny, cramped and uncomfortable . The bus made a stop at McDonald’s for 45 minutes because we are told drivers are not allowed to drive for 4 hours without stopping for 4 hours. Vienna was lovely and things went smoothly there. The next mishap occurred the morning we were to arrive near Budapest. We were told that over night we spent too much time waiting to go through the locks, so we would all need to stay on the boat directly to Budapest . Although this resulted in beautiful scenery, our sightseeing in Budapest was cut down to 4 hours and all of our excursions had to be cancelled. At this point even the staff agreed this was pathetic! Viking was no help on the phone while this is happening and has not reached out at all. Their customer service is horrible!’ Read Less

Coordinating with another couple, this was the best timing and length of cruise. Very impressed with flight assistance from Viking and the overall level of communication and assistance before the trip. Transportation from airport felt somewhat disorganized, but did smooth out. Lovely atmosphere on ship, very comfortable veranda cabin, excellent dining and service. Unfortunately, I was injured the first day out (my fault, too vigorous dancing!), so was not able to fully participate in shore excursions. My husband was able to enjoy them in the company of our friends we were traveling with, so he brought back photos. I felt lucky that I was able to relax on the ship and enjoy the fine dining and beautiful scenery, even though I couldn't get out and about. If we had been traveling by ourselves, lugging luggage and moving from hotel to hotel, I wouldn't have been able to continue the trip. Excursions seemed well organized and educational. Entertainment on the ship was fine and not what I consider necessary for enjoying the cruise, but many people did enjoy it and it did bring everyone out into the lounge to socialize and participate according to their taste. A highlight was definitely the many nice people we met who were traveling from all parts of the U.S. and from some other countries as well. We are planning to take another river cruise in the next year or two, this time for longer, perhaps the 12 day Zurich to Paris, or one of the Scandinavian options. Or both! Read Less

We purchased the very over-priced Viking Romantic Danube cruise, departing from Nuremberg and "sailing" to Budapest on Nov. 18, 2018. During the weeks and months prior to our first river cruise date, members of our foursome contacted Viking to confirm conditions were still good for our cruise. We were told that if we hadn't received any notifications indicating otherwise, all was well. On Nov. 14, 2 days before our long flights from YYC, Viking sent notice that low water levels meant we would travel on a similar longship "with all the comfort and style" of the Atla and that " on the morning of Day 7, we will likely need to disembark the ship in Vienna and travel by motorcoach to Budapest (150 miles)". Our river cruise and upgraded flights were all paid for, so we moved forward - hopeful that we wouldn't have to trade the most beautiful and anticipated part of our river cruise - the Wachau Valley - for a tedious 4 hour bus tour. But, of course we did - and not only did we miss the Wachau Valley because we reached it in the evening, but we endured another 4 hour bus ride on the busy Autoban while being shuffled around 3 different ships! Every few nights we had to pack up our rooms and set our bags outside for transfer to our next Longship We are frequent ocean cruisers and realise river cruising is different, but neither our ships nor our "French Balcony" stateroom could be described as comfortable or stylish. Our French Balcony was an expensive security risk - usually we were docked with another longship wedged up beside us - curtains had to be kept closed and balcony door locked - it was claustrophobic in the tiny room. Since there are no exercise facilities on the Viking Longboats, I took along water-weights, hoping to work out in our room, but that was impossible, since bags had to be packed up frequently and the room was far too small to allow any movement. All optional tours in Budapest were cancelled, due to our late arrival. The highlight of our trip was the days before and after the Viking cruise that we spent on our own in Nuremberg and Budapest. Our meals were good - nowhere near what we're used to on Ocean cruises (for a far less price). The rooms were clean. The staff were hardworking and friendly (so we paid the full recommended tips). The included shore excursions were good, however we only had opportunity to go on one optional excursion and that was very expensive but good, as well. Our upgraded liquor packages were not worth it, since they had run out of most of the wines we were told would be available to us, by the time we reached our last ship and they certainly weren't serving anything up on our bus hauls! The worse is yet to come!...our follow up. Viking offered us a future cruise credit "because we believe your overall cruise experience may have been affected by an unexpected situation". In other words, purchase another Viking cruise and they would be willing to pay for a small part of it - provided you did it within a year. When I said "thanks but no thanks" I was contacted by phone by a very unprofessional Viking agent. Our call consisted of so many long, pregnant pauses that I finally had to ask why she had called. She said she didn't want to insult me but wanted to make a deal. She offered a slightly larger cruise credit. When I asked how many times she thought we had changed ships, she gave it some thought and said "Oh, on this trip - maybe 3 or 4". Obviously, she hadn't even read my written complaint, but so much for the "unexpected situation"! When I told her that our travelling companions and other guests had been offered more, she told me that we were "entitled to nothing" and that we "can't make a deal" and proceeded to hang up. I can't imagine ever doing business with Viking again. Only their greed and confidence that they wouldn't be held liable could have allowed them to sell such a cruise (known low-water conditions) to unsuspecting fools like us. They were careful to keep the on-going situation hidden from us until the last days prior to sailing, and even more careful to include all kinds of self-serving protection in the fine print regarding "the carrier's rights". Where we were going, have done Viking before and liked it. We did explore Budapest a bit before departure. The ship is spacious and very friendly staff. We had to switch boats and the staff recommended who we should look up after switching. Shore excursions are fantastic. Informative and fun with very friendly tour guides. I would and will definitely go again. Once back on the boat there was time to relax a bit before cocktails, dinner and evening entertainment. When changing boats, the transition was as smooth as it could possibly have been. The food on board was all very good. There were plenty of options so everyone could have just what the wanted. We did purchase the silver drink package and it was definitely worth the money. I woill plan another Viking riverboat cruise and ocean cruise in the future. Thank you for making it such a great experience. Read Less

Viking Cruises now has a loyal customer for life! Not only was the cruise AMAZING! But I feel like you learn a lot about a company based off of how they deal with obscacles. Four days before our cruise started, we were informed that the water was low and we would be aboard Ship Jarl (not original ship) instead of Ship Atla (orginal ship) and that there was a possibilty that if the water didn't rise, we would have to swap from the Jarl to the Atla.  How fabulous is it that the moment they knew of the issue, they informed us! When we got on the Jarl, our WONDERFUL Cruise Director, Mario, told us what he knew, what we could expect if we had to switch ships, and when he'd give us our next update. They were honest and kept us informed as they promised. Where we did have to switch ships, because mother nature wasn't in our favor, they did EVERYTHING they could to make the change comfortable. Mario worked countless hours with other individuals behind the scenes to get us to the Atla with as much ease as they could provide. All inconveniences were minimal. We had to pack and unpack an additional time. And if you can even call it an inconvenience, we were able to take the most beautiful country side drive through Germany for 3 hours. We saw farms, villages on the hill side, and gorgeous churches and their different architecture. AND a tour that they thought they'd have to cancel, Mario worked it out so we'd be able to do the tour at a later time after we reached the Atla. We were so impressed by how they handled the issue. And it's worth noting that there was another cruise line (that I can't remember the name of) that wasn't able to fulfill on their itinerary because of the low water issue as there isn’t much you can do when it’s a Mother Nature issue. Viking did everything in their power to keep us on track and they did a phenomenal job. The water level was out of their control, but they took control of the issue and provided solution after solution to keep us happy and comfortable. Now, that I've gushed a bit about how they handled that issue (and I could gush more!), I want to gush about the boat, food, staff, and tours. Boat - Easy to navigate. Even the smallest room felt open and roomy. The upper deck was perfect way to end the day. We’d watch the country side as we talked and had our evening tea. THE FOOD!! We were so fat and happy after our trip. The dinners were especially delicious and we loved that it was local cusiune!! So nummy!! Our waiters would give us their recommendations and they never steered us wrong. There were times when all the desserts looked so scrumptious, we got them all!! And had our bellies not been so happily extended, we would have had more!! Staff - Oh, the staff. It didn't matter if we were on the Jarl or Atla, the people were fabulous. Attentive. Funny. Sweet. Caring. Personable. Informative. They made life on the boat a home. We loved how quickly we were able to make jokes with them. They always remembered our drink preferences for meals and would cater their recommendations based off of what we said we’d liked from previous meals. When we’d retire to bed, a blanket that I brought from home was always folded in a new way. My favorite was when Alexander made it into a bow tie! It was a wonderful environment to be in. A huge thanks to Dragan, Connie, Jayson, Radu, Alexander, Skiffy, Emanuel, and Nikolas. They’re who we were able to personally get to know during our trip. And where we were able to get to know them, every person on those ships deserve recognition for how hard they worked to give other guests the same attention and care our little boat family gave us! Tours - Viking picked the BEST people to give tours. They were local to the area and they where very knowledgable and passionate about what we did. It was great to talk to them as they had multiple generations of family that lived in the area and were able to tell us about their own history. No book or class will ever provoke feelings or thoughts like walking around the cities with people who know not only the history stories, but their family’s history as well. You appreciate it so much more. Having that opportunity gave the cities a whole new life and meaning to me. And whether it was the included or optional tours, you can't go wrong. You learn history on such a personal level. Read Less

We selected this cruise after taking advice that the Danube was a great first time river cruise and had heard good things from other Viking customers. The cruise began the day of my 65th birthday and we spent a night in Nuremberg before the cruise embarkation. Everything went smoothly. The Cabin was good and the Crew very friendly and helfpul. The initial briefing was good and afterward we had a superb dinner. The Chef was Carlito and he and his staff did a fine job all week. Meals were served at the table and I much preferred this to the Buffet service you often find on cruises where there is a temptation to eat too much. Waiters and waitresses were prompt and efficient. There was a regular menu, special menus for the day and a regional menu which we opted for most of the time. Beer and wine were free at Lunch and Dinner. The cooking was of a high standard. About 70% of the passengers were from the US with perhaps 15% from the UK and another 10% from Canada. We were in a very select group from Europe. Everyone was friendly. Most people seemed to fall into the 55 - 75 age group and mostly couples. Entertainment was provided in the lounge in the evening, but we are not lounge sorts of people. I heard that the entertainment was good. Not any fitness facilities, but the daily walks provided exercise. The boat went from Nuremberg to Regensburg, Passau, Krems, Vienna and Budapest. A tour was included at each stop and there were optional tours at various prices. The tour director was Mario and he did a very good job with a briefing and often a talk on a particular topic before dinner each evening. The tour guides were good and you had a radio with an earphone for the tours. Mobility within this age group can vary a lot and after the first day we had different designated groups: easy, regular and enhanced for the tours. Stops on the walking tours usually had seating which was appreciated. You only had to walk about 15 minutes before a stop and comfort breaks were arranged. We visited Nuremberg, Regensburg, Krems, Vienna and Budapest. For us the best days were at Nuremberg and Budapest and the tour of Gottweig Abbey in Austria although all were good. On the evening in Budapest we had a special cruise to see Budapest at night. Beautiful We took the 2 night extension in Budapest and it was well worth it. We stayed at the Hilton on Castle Hill. The room was superb with a fantastic view of Pest. We visited several museums, the Great Synagogue and the Parliament buildings. When booking places make sure that the staff know you are an EU citizen as they will assume your are American and not entitled to EU discounts. All in all a great holiday. The Viking experience and attention to detail is fantastic. We would take a Viking River Cruise again, but next year we will head for a Viking Ocean Cruise. We particularly liked the inclusive nature of the holiday with a tour included each day as well as beer and wine at lunch and dinner. At the end of the trip the only extras we had to pay were the gratuities for the crew and a few euros for laundry. Highly Recommended. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was the right length and covered all of the highlights we wanted. I was expecting a lot and was absolutely not disappointed. Amazing service and from the cruise director, to maids, to bartender to guides they were all incredibly friendly and helpful. We ate great, stayed in a comfortable cabin and loved the amenities. The excursions we very well thought out. Guides were all energetic and entertaining. Learned so much about Europe. Busses were always comfortable. Our only item we would have enjoyed would have been more free time. Seems like always on such a tight schedule and if we got behind the free time was sacrificed. Our bartender was amazing. He was always friendly and helpful. Taught me the glory of some new drinks. I liked that once he got to no me, I never had to give him my card and drink pass again., wuitefrankly made me feel special. I thought Viking worked very hard to find entertainment that was fun yet appropriate for our age group.. The piano player was wonderful. To me, my best days was the two afternoons we traveled through some of the most beautiful parts of the river. We sat on top in a lounge chair, had a drink or two, read and took lots of pictures. Lastly I liked the daily get together, where we had a drink and our cruise director gave us a briefing on the next day’s activity. Another opportunity to visit and enjoy. Read Less

We looked at 3-4 cruise lines before selecting Viking, a big part of the decision being value for the price. Except for the weather, which we certainly can't hold Viking responsible, everything was great - the accommodations, the food, the service, the tours .... Viking thinks of everything. My wife and I are fussy eaters, but there wasn't a single meal where we weren't able to find something to satisfy us. My wife suffers from motion sickness, which is why we've never been on an ocean cruise, but figured we'd gamble on a river cruise. In order to even know the ship was moving, you had to be out on deck. No vibration, no engine noise! To give you an idea as to how much we liked it, in the literature prior to sailing, Viking recommended a tip for the program director and crew, and I thought it was a little high. But when we were checking out on the last day, I took the recommendation and added another 20%. I don't recommend this for families, as the clientele definitely leaned toward senior citizens, the average age probably mid 60s. All the tour guides were knowledgeable and personable. Not sure if I would pay the extra for a veranda, because we rarely set foot on it, at least a little because of the weather. Plus, if you're in your cabin, you're probably sleeping. Our dilemma now is deciding which Viking cruise to take next. Read Less

For our first cruise together, My Lady and I booked the Romantic Danube Cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg (August 20-27, 2017) on the Viking longboat, Atla. I paid $10,398 for the Veranda Suite and was assigned to Veranda Suite 316. THE GOOD - The ship, itself, is aesthetically well designed and appeared just as presented in the Viking advertisements and virtual ship tours. The food ranged from average-to-excellent. The preponderance of the food, however, ranged from very-good to excellent. Some dishes were superb. The wait staff handled the on-rushing passengers very well. They were courteous and attentive, almost always. The tours at each port were always well organized, even when somewhat boring. Kudos to the Program Director! Our maid was excellent in keeping our room clean and with the fresh towels that we requested. She was always pleasant and eager to make our stay more enjoyable. The passengers on board were friendly and we met many interesting people who will provide us with long lasting memories. The cruise along the Danube with its 26 locks provided interesting and entertaining landscape. THE BAD began our 2nd day on board (Monday, August 21) when our toilet wouldn’t flush. We reported it to the reception desk, received an apology and someone (an ‘engineer’) used a vacuum with hallway access to the toilet plumbing to resolve the symptom. The next day, Tuesday, was a repeat performance. The toilet would not flush. There was a call to the front desk with a verbal apology. As was done previously, an ‘engineer’ was sent to resolve the symptom. The next day, Wednesday, was another repeat performance. The toilet would not flush followed by a call the to front desk with an apology and an engineer was sent to resolve the symptom. On Thursday morning, I talked with the lady at the front desk and expressed my dissatisfaction with Viking’s poor performance to resolving my toilet plumbing issue. I received an apology, but as I found out later, nothing else was done. Thursday evening, our toilet would not flush. I made the call to the front desk and received an apology. An engineer vacuumed out the line from the hallway. Friday evening was ‘the straw’ the broke our backs. It was 10:30 pm, feces was floating in our toilet which, and for the fifth consecutive day, would not flush. My Lady and I walked downstairs to the front desk. I requested the name of the person in Viking Headquarters who should be contacted about non-performance of our contract. No one would pay the money we paid and have to have maintenance flush our toilet every day. It was only after requesting a Viking Headquarters name that serious concern appeared and a memo was noted for manager. As had become customary, an engineer was sent to resolve the symptom. It seemed clear that our problem was not of sufficient importance to immediately get the Hotel Manager. The next morning, we returned to the front desk and asked for the manager. The Manager stated that his staff had not notified him of the problem. I told him that I was interested in customer performance and did not want to address his organization’s processes. While I was talking with the Hotel Manager, the engineer who had been sent on at least 3 occasions to resolve our toilet symptom appeared. The Hotel Manager talked with the engineer in my presence. During that conversation, the engineer told the manager on two occasions that there was nothing wrong with the toilet. Then, he told the Manager that the suite had a bad pump. I discussed with the Manager his conversation with the engineer. I pointed out that I heard the engineer say that there was no problem before admitting that there was a bad pump. The Manager told me that the engineer (gave two different versions because he) had difficulty with the language. I also told the Manager that that there was no sense of urgency to resolve our problem, but that I hoped he would not let the next passengers use Suite 316 knowing that there is a toilet problem. The Hotel Manager said that I needed to look at my Viking literature and find the number for Customer Relations. He, in-turn, would file a report with Viking Headquarters. Later, I spoke with the Hotel Manager informing him of what my understanding of his Atla policy. I told him that I did not want him to be blindsided by my report to Viking Headquarters. He agreed with the following: “The policy of Hotel Management of the Atla is to offer a verbal apology for any and all non-performance, including malfunctioning toilets. Any financial adjustments or other compensation associated with non-performance is handled by Viking Headquarters.” THE UGLY occurred in the early afternoon of Saturday, August 26. The engineer who had spoken with the Hotel Manager used his key and entered our suite without knocking. My Lady was sitting in the living room, alone, in her negligee. When he entered he announce that he had changed the toilet pump and then he entered the bedroom and flushed the toilet. This behavior is just plain DISRESPECTFULL! When I reported the behavior to the front desk, the immediate response was ‘He shouldn’t have done that!” Then came the customary apology. I expressed my strong disappointment with Viking for not only lacking a sense of urgency about my toilet issue, but with the disrespect shown by entering our suite without knocking. After I heard the “I’m sorry you feel that way,” I asked, “How would you feel?”. There was no response. THE AFTERMATH. With all of the Viking literature about how great it is, My Lady and I had planned to purchase the Viking Ocean Cruise from Venice to Athens. After our experience with Viking River Cruise on the Atla, My Lady wants nothing to do with Viking. She pointed out that there were 190 passengers on board, a complete sellout. We were the only Blacks (African Americans) on board. Her statement to me was … “I think we were treated this way because we’re Black.” VIKING HEADQUARTERS RESPONSE: I found a phone number that lead me to Viking Customer Relations and contacted the organization on September 3, 2017. The representative informed me that the Atla Hotel Manager had sent a note of customer dissatisfaction but there were no details. I told her that I wouldn’t expect the Manager to report anything that would reflect negatively on him or his organization. After a brief discussion of the events, I offered to send the Customer Relations representative a draft report of my Viking Riverboat cruise experience before I published it on various travel review sites. My offer was accepted and we discussed the report on September 11. I was told that Viking takes this kind of customer feedback seriously and that our negative experience will be used to better train its employees in an effort to avoid future customers having “The Bad” and “The Ugly” experiences that we had. Viking offered a confidential compensation, but to take advantage of it would require purchasing another Viking Cruise. I told the Viking Customer Relations representative that while I appreciated Viking’s offer, at this time, My Lady has no interest in Viking. Some comments about Viking Travel. I planned our flight from Kennedy (JFK) airport in New York for the Romantic Danube Cruise departing from Budapest. Viking Travel could not guarantee seats together if it arranged our flights. Adjoining seats as well as maximum leg room is a requirement for our international travel. Traveller comments posted on the web indicated confusion with taxis and other ground transportation in finding docked Viking longboats. For convenience, I procured Viking airport transfers between the airports and the ship. I was charged $60 per person per transfer. That totaled $240 for the two of us. The Viking representative told me that when we arrived in Budapest, a Viking agent would see us at baggage claim when we came to pickup our luggage and would carry our baggage to a Viking vehicle to be transported to the ship. Also, in Nuremberg, our baggage would be taken to the (Air France) check-in counter. Neither service occurred. In Budapest we had to carry our baggage to the Viking vehicle. In Nuremberg, while on-ship, I asked the Program Director if our luggage would be carried to check-in. She told me that when the bus driver places our luggage on the ground, we were on our own. Subsequently, we had to carry our baggage from bus to ticket counter inside of terminal. My understanding from listening to passengers obtaining information at the Atla front desk, is that taxi fares would have totaled less than $100 for all airport transfers. We were disappointed that Viking sales mislead us; I would have purchased the transfers without the false representation. (Viking Customer Relations informed me that we received the service that is Viking’s policy to provide.) Read Less

We choose this cruise so that as Jews, we could see the history of our people. The bad things and the good. The Viking Shore Tours were excellent for viewing, educational tour guides and safe bus drivers. This could not have been any better organized. We felt that the amount of free time was about right and the cities where we stopped and visited offered a great deal of different history as well as beautiful sites. We did encounter people in several of our visited cities that were extremely unfriendly, non communicative and not helpful when asking about their wares. We enjoy cruising on Viking for the very reason, everything is taken care of. No worries as to where to eat, how to get a taxi and how to find our way back to the ship. However, I let called to make sure that I would have only white chicken breast and lots of fruit and vegetables since I don't eat any meat at all. I also told our waiter several times yet the menu was poor for me. The chef said the menu came from corporate office and he had to follow it. Would you want to eat a pain chicken breast on top of mashed potatoes for 7 days? I think not and I think the chef shut have been able to have more variety. I hope your Corporate office will take note of this. It was embarrassing to sit at the Captains dinner with no plate of food!! The staff on Viking is truly the most helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable. Viking left us stranded in Paris for over 7 hours, bumping us off of three different planes to Nuremberg. I finally demanded to be flown to Amsterdam and then to Nuremberg which Air France did after many phone calls to Viking Atla. I could not reach anyone in the CA office as it was too early. We ask to fly in early so that I could celebrate my birthday with my Germany friends and family. The luncheon was over and people had returned to their homes when we arrive at the ship at 6:45pm when we were suppose to be at the ship at 10:00 AM. This memory is forever gone and a very sad one to have missed. I also let the waiter, as well noted when I booked the cruise that it was a Birthday celebration for me and an anniversary for my brother and sister in law. After many reminders, finally on Saturday, the anniversary was celebrated. We requested on Tuesday or Wednesday. Our waiter did nothing for my birthday and again, so disappointing to me and my family. I ate most of my meals on the back of the deck with soups and salads. When on an excursion, I would find a nice restaurant and eat my main meal off ship. We turned all of our paper work in to the front desk of Atla and we were told that they had submitted all of this documentation to Viking. As of today, we have not had any contact with Viking or Air France. I would appreciate this information be given your immediate attention and contact us. This was or second Viking cruise and we have referred several families to Viking. I expect to have some compensation for this frustration and disappointing experience. It definitely dampened our trip. Read Less

We had sailed with Viking River Cruises in Russia, and we knew to expect luxurious accommodations, great food and excellent tour offerings. The Danube tour didn't disappoint. The service was superb -- personable, attentive, helpful. The extensions were particularly fine. Our pre-tour extension in Ljubliana was fantastic. The guide was extremely knowledgeable (an art PhD) and attentive to every detail of our stay. The tour of Lake Bleb was a real standout. The Prague tour was good but not as remarkable. Because of the number of participants, the service was very impersonal and at times disorganized. The city itself made up for it. You should definitely take the two-hour city tour offered by the hotel. Riding in vintage open-topped cars, you can ride throughout the city, including places off-limits to other vehicles. We were very fortunate to be upgraded to an Explorer Suite, and they're worth the price. The room, with balconies on two sides, are a true luxury -- spacious, well-appointed, well-stocked with fruit and drinks. They're also very private and quiet, and a wonderful way to watch the countryside. Read Less

We chose the Romantic Danube from Budapest to Nuremberg because we had never sailed on the Danube and we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We chose to stay two nights prior in Budapest arranged by Viking at the beautiful and outstanding location Intercontinental Hotel. While my husband took several walking tours, I sat watching all kinds of people strolling the promenade right in front of hotel and along the river - brides, bachelor party participants in kilts, young families, etc. Budapest is a vibrant city with good restaurants and outstanding landmark buildings. On board (our fifth Viking cruise but first on a long ship) we were treated by an excellent staff - to name a few - Georgia in the bar, our hotel director, Ryan in the dining room, and most importantly our cruise director Mario. He was always smiling and very helpful and an expert in arranging the shore excursions and the very informative talks on board. All in all, a very enjoyable trip. Read Less

Viking Cruise lines is a class act. All the crew were professional, polite, willing to help, patient, and attempted to learn the names of the passengers. I will never do a mega ship again. The ship was very clean. I was a little surprised at the decor, in my opinion, it could use a little face lift, It was a lot more plane than I thought it would be. But again, the ship was spotless and well organized and easy to get around. I was very impress with the ship handling skills of the captain and the first officer. I have recommended you cruise to all my friends and coworkers, everywhere we looked was a post card view. The tours were well organized and the guides were all very good. The extra excursions were reasonably priced and I did not feel I was being gouged every 5 minutes like the mega ship cruises. Lee Nashold. Read Less

It sounded like a fun time. These were cities I wanted to visit and a river cruise was something I wanted to do. Although the cabin was small, we were so busy that we hardly spent any time in there. The food was excellent and there was plenty of it. We were never hungry. There were snacks available between meals. Every evening, there was some activity or entertainment if you were looking for additional ways to have fun and meet other people. Because of high river levels, we ended up having to switch ships. They made it so easy and with little inconvenience to us. They had to adjust some of our excursions but we were able to see the Alps which is something we were not originally scheduled to do. Shore excursions were informative and we were given several choices as what we wanted to do. There was also free time to relax, shop or take in more sights. This was my first cruise and I would sail Viking again. Friendly staff, good food and a great time. Read Less

After receiving a brochure in the mail, we decided we would love to sail the Danube. We had heard so many wonderful things about Budapest and Prague and decided to do extensions in both cities pre/post cruise. From the moment we arrived in Budapest, Viking had a presence, providing information about the city, restaurants, excursions and the upcoming cruise. We had three wonderful days in Budapest - I cannot wait to visit again! The people, the food, the sights are all amazing in that city! We boarded the ship mid-day on day 3 and were greeted by an ingratiating and fun-loving crew! They made the trip so memorable with their service and their antics. We have several pictures in our vacation book of the crew that served us nonstop! I have never been treated with such grace and compassion. I can only think that Viking does a superb job in selecting and cultivating the best people - they must be very happy with their employer because they serve them well! Our first night on the ship, the captain took us for a night ride up and down the Budapest waterfront. All of the buildings were lit spectacularly and the lights reflecting in the water was breathtaking - a very memorable start to an unforgettable cruise. We stopped in Vienna and enjoyed several excursions in the city. Hard to rate one over the other because they were all wonderful but the Ring excursion was something not to be missed! These are the events I hold most memorable: the little sausage shop on the banks of the Danube in Regensberg - I cannot find anything better anywhere!; the bike ride out of Krems into the local countryside; the Danube narrows and the Abbey; the castle at Nuremberg and the WWII tour; and Prague - what a wonderful city to explore and dine in - the people are so welcoming - don't miss St Charles Bridge and the castle! What I would do differently - I would spend more time exploring the little villages and less time on formal excursions; I would make sure to see all of the stops (we went to Salzburg on a day trip - wonderul trip! - but we missed seeing anything in Passau because of that excursion and I hear it was a gem - so sorry to have missed it; Viking took care of our luggage throughout the trip - all arrangements made to get us to/from the airports and a Viking local made sure that we were able to navigate the airport for the trip home including the VAT desk. The exceeded my expectations for this vacation! We have booked a cruise up the Rhine in 2019 - I cannot wait to travel with Viking again! Read Less

Our choice was greatly influenced by the recommendation of friends and acquaintances - we heard nothing but rave reviews of Viking River Cruises. My wife and I found the ship and crew to be terrific in every way. The cabin was perfect for your needs and very well maintained by the staff. The crew functioned like a well oiled machine, were gracious, attentive and committed to providing a positive experience for everyone. The food was excellent (presentation, variety and most importantly taste) in every way. Onboard entertainment provided an appropriate mix of interest and pleasure. The shore excursions provided a good overview of the locale visited and time ashore was adequate for individual exploration of areas of interest. Embarkation and debarkation were very well executed including the arrangement for air travel, airport transfer and transportation to ATLA upon our arrival in Budapest. The experience was spectacular in every way. We look forward to our next Viking experience. Read Less

We had traveled with Viking once before in 2013. Even though it was a kind of working trip for us with the Singing Men of Texas on the Black Sea, it was wonderful. Once again we found the service of all working for Viking is above and beyond anything we expected. Everyone is so helpful and kind. The whole ship is immaculate! All the waiters, tables, rooms, everything was spotless and perfect. The planned tours were very informative and well organized. All the tour guides were knowledgeable and their English perfect. Our last guide in Vienna to the Palace must have been tired or stressed out, because she fell short in the pleasant category. She seemed a little bored with all of us and in a hurry to be rid of the inconvenience. But considering this, only one, out of all the people we met - commendable. Also had a guide in Regensburg, Germany with too many political views concerning American politics, but we just laughed him off knowing he was not in the "know". Political views should be kept to oneself especially concerning a country not your own. All in all, YES, we hope to be able to tour with Viking again. Wonderful experience and one everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. Read Less

Grade A service, Grade A logistics, Grade A tours, Grade A optional land excursions, Grade A food, and Grade A entertainment. The food was superb and for me being on a salt restricted diet, the maitre'd sought me out at breakfast and would give me the lunch menu and dinner menu for the day. On the left side are the daily selections and on the right there are the standbys available every night, e.g., steak, fish, chicken, pasta. I was able to pick my daily meals with no salt....especially made for me. There were others who were diabetic and those needing a gluten free meal. The land tours were great and divided into groups from easy walking to longer more intense walking trips. The guides were local to the town we were visiting and they spoke English very well. They definitely deserved the tips that were offered. I can't think of one thing that I would have changed. The service was impeccable. First night we had a tour of the river lights in Budapest. It was chilly when we went to the upper deck, but they were right there with blankets and a tray of apricot schnapps. Nice touch!! Read Less

This cruise was chosen because we had never been to the Danube river and in particular, Budapest. We also took advantage of the Viking airfare offer, and all our connections went smoothly. Transportation to and from the airports was excellent. The crew was very friendly, and went out of their way to please us. Based on our experience, we are set to take the Rhine river cruise with Viking this spring. The food on our trip was excellent, and there was a very good variety of things to choose from. The different restaurants made it easy to find just what we wanted. Our shore excursions were well planned, and allowed us to see many sights in the various local areas we visited. The on-board entertainment was very good, and catered to many tastes. Cruising on our ship was vey peaceful, and traveling by night left our days open for sightseeing. Read Less

Class AAA from pre departure to return. The planning by Viking and all of the staff was exceptional. Everything was in excess of expectations. If you were to only have a once in a lifetime cruise to take, this would be the one. All excursions and events were thoroughly planned to the last detail. Every excursion, lecture, and event went without any issues. All of the staff was extremely nice, courteous, and helpful. No question or request was deemed out of line. All were professional and cheerful from departure to return. It is never easy to please the public, but they managed to make everyone of the passengers feel special.I look forward to planning another river cruise. It will most certainly be with Viking River Cruises. There are not enough words to describe how very satisfied I and my wife were with the whole experience. I wanted to learn more about Eastern European Countries. It was an excellent experience hearing from the people themselves what is was like to be communist. And how the change affected them. We never really learned in school about their history. We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise the excursions were very informative, especially the home visits with their personal stories. The guides were very good and made sure we understood the meeting times and places etc. We liked it that we could eat lunch informally at the back of the ship at the buffet line and just enjoy a lunch with a view and pick exactly what we wanted in a relaxing atmosphere. The concierge was very helpful when we wanted to rent bikes and ride through Belgrade with a group from the boat. The entertainment included some fun games that I would love to do with friends at home.. The crazy definitions they had and we had to guess which person was telling the truth.. The staff and crew were extremely helpful and friendly. Read Less

My wife and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary aboard Viking Atla from Nürnburg to Budapest. It was a wonderful trip from beginning to end. Shipboard service was beyond exceptional. Dining and staff were very attentive to special dietary needs. On the first morning one of us ordered a breakfast item on the menu to be prepared in an unusual manner. No matter where we sat, or who our server was on subsequent mornings, we were asked if we wanted that meal prepared that way again! Cabin staff created special touches for our anniversary. Viking even arranged perfect weather - not a bad day during the whole trip. Included and optional shore excursions were very enlightening and the guides went out of their way to attend to each person in their charge. Viking arranged round trip air to accommodate a pre-cruise trip in Germany before boarding and an extended stay in Budapest. We were very pleased with Viking's choice of Air France as a service provider and hope that we will fly Air France again for the Rhine River Cruise on Viking Alruna we just booked for the fall of 2018! My wife and I recently returned from a utopian Viking River Cruise from Budapest, Hungary to Nuremburg, Germany aboard the Viking Alta. Three years ago we had the best experience taking our 4 adult children on a Viking cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. When my wife's sister decided she would like go on a European river cruise to celebrate her 60th birthday, we strongly recommended Viking and invited ourselves to come along! We arrived in Budapest a day early and stayed at the Hilton on the Buda side of the Danube by the Fisherman's Bastion. We attended Sunday Mass at St. Mattias Church and loved exploring both sides of the city -- Buda and Pest. Our first evening meal on board the ship was fantastic, and the service even better. A real highlight was the later evening cruise to see the glorious Parliment building all lit up at night! The Vienna City tour was amazing, and lunch at Sigmund Freud's hangout the Cafe Landtmann was really cool. The optional Mozart and Strauss musical evening arranged just for Viking was simply incredible -- to enjoy the musicians and dancers in such an intimate setting was a memory for a lifetime! Another favorite highlight was the Salzburg city tour which captured many of the Sound of Music sites, and we will never forget getting to tour the Weltenburg Abbey on the Danube Narrows. Our last day in Nuremburg, Germany was a powerful reminder of evils of Hitler's Nazi Germany contrasted with the natural beauty and genuine warmth of the local German people. The complete Viking experience is simply first class in every respect. We stayed on the main floor in an efficient and beautiful room with full length windows which provided such gorgeous views of the Danube river and countryside. Our group of 5 couples were spoiled and pampered with delicious food and a variety of great drinks provided by the most genuine, attentive and gracious staff. Our cruise week did encounter a significant hiccup, as we needed to change ships after our first 4 days on the Viking Jarl. Apparently a ship had damaged one of the locks making it impassable and so the Viking Jarl and Viking Atla literally swapped guests and crew on Thursday of the cruise week. I expected a huge hassle but we were completely impressed with how seamless and easy the whole process ended up being! We left our packed bags outside our door that morning, and that evening returned to our same room on the new ship with our bags delivered and waiting for us. Frankly, I was astonished with the smooth transition! To me, tremendous credit goes to our Program Director, Mario Zamosteanu, who stayed with us all week, and was the key figure in our move from the Viking Jarl to the Viking Atla. Mario is engaging, energetic, always happy, service oriented, and I think maybe he has a twin brother because he was everywhere every day! Mario's infectious smile and calm, can do attitude clearly were contagious with his entire staff, and with all of us as well! What could have been a major headache ended up being a net positive, because we were able to experience the luxurious service of both ship's outstanding crew members! We cannot thank Mario enough for making our cruise experience simply outstanding! Our group of 5 couples are already talking about our next Viking Cruise and may try the Mediterranean next time....I truly hope I see Mario's smiling face when we board the ship!
