Viking Cruises now has a loyal customer for life! Not only was the cruise AMAZING! But I feel like you learn a lot about a company based off of how they deal with obscacles. Four days before our cruise started, we were informed that the water was low and we would be aboard Ship Jarl (not original ship) instead of Ship Atla (orginal ship) and that there was a possibilty that if the water didn't rise, we would have to swap from the Jarl to the Atla.  How fabulous is it that the moment they knew of the issue, they informed us! When we got on the Jarl, our WONDERFUL Cruise Director, Mario, told us what he knew, what we could expect if we had to switch ships, and when he'd give us our next update. They were honest and kept us informed as they promised. Where we did have to switch ships, because mother nature wasn't in our favor, they did EVERYTHING they could to make the change comfortable. Mario worked countless hours with other individuals behind the scenes to get us to the Atla with as much ease as they could provide. All inconveniences were minimal. We had to pack and unpack an additional time. And if you can even call it an inconvenience, we were able to take the most beautiful country side drive through Germany for 3 hours. We saw farms, villages on the hill side, and gorgeous churches and their different architecture. AND a tour that they thought they'd have to cancel, Mario worked it out so we'd be able to do the tour at a later time after we reached the Atla. We were so impressed by how they handled the issue. And it's worth noting that there was another cruise line (that I can't remember the name of) that wasn't able to fulfill on their itinerary because of the low water issue as there isn’t much you can do when it’s a Mother Nature issue. Viking did everything in their power to keep us on track and they did a phenomenal job. The water level was out of their control, but they took control of the issue and provided solution after solution to keep us happy and comfortable. Now, that I've gushed a bit about how they handled that issue (and I could gush more!), I want to gush about the boat, food, staff, and tours. Boat - Easy to navigate. Even the smallest room felt open and roomy. The upper deck was perfect way to end the day. We’d watch the country side as we talked and had our evening tea. THE FOOD!! We were so fat and happy after our trip. The dinners were especially delicious and we loved that it was local cusiune!! So nummy!! Our waiters would give us their recommendations and they never steered us wrong. There were times when all the desserts looked so scrumptious, we got them all!! And had our bellies not been so happily extended, we would have had more!! Staff - Oh, the staff. It didn't matter if we were on the Jarl or Atla, the people were fabulous. Attentive. Funny. Sweet. Caring. Personable. Informative. They made life on the boat a home. We loved how quickly we were able to make jokes with them. They always remembered our drink preferences for meals and would cater their recommendations based off of what we said we’d liked from previous meals. When we’d retire to bed, a blanket that I brought from home was always folded in a new way. My favorite was when Alexander made it into a bow tie! It was a wonderful environment to be in. A huge thanks to Dragan, Connie, Jayson, Radu, Alexander, Skiffy, Emanuel, and Nikolas. They’re who we were able to personally get to know during our trip. And where we were able to get to know them, every person on those ships deserve recognition for how hard they worked to give other guests the same attention and care our little boat family gave us! Tours - Viking picked the BEST people to give tours. They were local to the area and they where very knowledgable and passionate about what we did. It was great to talk to them as they had multiple generations of family that lived in the area and were able to tell us about their own history. No book or class will ever provoke feelings or thoughts like walking around the cities with people who know not only the history stories, but their family’s history as well. You appreciate it so much more. Having that opportunity gave the cities a whole new life and meaning to me. And whether it was the included or optional tours, you can't go wrong. You learn history on such a personal level. Read Less

We had never been on a cruise before and we were so fortunate to have hit a bullseye on our first try. We added a 3 day extension at the start of our trip to be able to explore Transylvania. It was fabulous. I would recommend folks sign up for EVERY shore excursion offered---they are so enriching! The veranda stateroom we had was great! There was more room than anticipated and we made use of the veranda daily! We had a slight problem the first day when there was a strange odor, but our stateroom attendant was vigilant and solved the problem right away. We found ALL staff on the ship to be most responsive and friendly! Cannot say enough about the service or the food. We certainly never went hungry and were able to sample all sorts of foods---enjoying both familiar and new. We also very much enjoyed meeting fellow cruisers. We already have a second cruise planned! We choose this cruise so that as Jews, we could see the history of our people. The bad things and the good. The Viking Shore Tours were excellent for viewing, educational tour guides and safe bus drivers. This could not have been any better organized. We felt that the amount of free time was about right and the cities where we stopped and visited offered a great deal of different history as well as beautiful sites. We did encounter people in several of our visited cities that were extremely unfriendly, non communicative and not helpful when asking about their wares. We enjoy cruising on Viking for the very reason, everything is taken care of. No worries as to where to eat, how to get a taxi and how to find our way back to the ship. However, I let called to make sure that I would have only white chicken breast and lots of fruit and vegetables since I don't eat any meat at all. I also told our waiter several times yet the menu was poor for me. The chef said the menu came from corporate office and he had to follow it. Would you want to eat a pain chicken breast on top of mashed potatoes for 7 days? I think not and I think the chef shut have been able to have more variety. I hope your Corporate office will take note of this. It was embarrassing to sit at the Captains dinner with no plate of food!! The staff on Viking is truly the most helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable. Viking left us stranded in Paris for over 7 hours, bumping us off of three different planes to Nuremberg. I finally demanded to be flown to Amsterdam and then to Nuremberg which Air France did after many phone calls to Viking Atla. I could not reach anyone in the CA office as it was too early. We ask to fly in early so that I could celebrate my birthday with my Germany friends and family. The luncheon was over and people had returned to their homes when we arrive at the ship at 6:45pm when we were suppose to be at the ship at 10:00 AM. This memory is forever gone and a very sad one to have missed. I also let the waiter, as well noted when I booked the cruise that it was a Birthday celebration for me and an anniversary for my brother and sister in law. After many reminders, finally on Saturday, the anniversary was celebrated. We requested on Tuesday or Wednesday. Our waiter did nothing for my birthday and again, so disappointing to me and my family. I ate most of my meals on the back of the deck with soups and salads. When on an excursion, I would find a nice restaurant and eat my main meal off ship. We turned all of our paper work in to the front desk of Atla and we were told that they had submitted all of this documentation to Viking. As of today, we have not had any contact with Viking or Air France. I would appreciate this information be given your immediate attention and contact us. This was or second Viking cruise and we have referred several families to Viking. I expect to have some compensation for this frustration and disappointing experience. It definitely dampened our trip. Read Less

We went on the Viking because our mom had a river cruise on her "bucket list". We found the ship to be very clean and easy to get around. We liked the idea of having less passengers in ratio to staff. Our staff was very, very good. They learned your name and used it when ever they saw you. The cruise director did a super job of explaining what each days activity would be. They had alot of extra trips you could take in addition to the ones provided in your trip. At each port our cruise director had an evening planned around where we where (i.e. october fest, opera, german dancing). The food planned by the chef was great and he fit it into the area we were in. We would say that if you want to do something like this, then join the Viking gang because you will have a super time. It was a great choice from my friend who was turning 60. I would have never chosen the Romantic Danube. But I am so glad he did. We used a travel agent who took care of everything. From the flights to Budapest to the return trip home. It was all taken care of. The River Cruise ship was amazing. We had upgraded our room to a two room suite. It was just beautiful. Personalized service for the room. The accommodations were impeccable. The staff were fantastic. The meals were like 5 star dining. All of the excursions were well planned, very interesting and worth the money. My only complaint was there was too much walking to get off the boat and get to the busses. The tour guides in every excursion were very informative and made us very comfortable. If I could I would go again in a New York minute. I can't say enough!! Read Less

My husband got sea sick on an Ocean Cruise we took for our honeymoon but the river cruise was not a problem at all. It took ten years for him to have the courage to try another cruise...but he loved the river cruise. For a senior with some health problems, the river cruise was relaxing and fun....a perfect balance of sight seeing and relaxing. He will definitely be up for another river cruise! This is a great trip for a photographer as my husband enjoyed taking photos of the sunsets and the lights at night in Budapest. The trip can accommodate any level of physical activity...they had special tours without much walking for those who had limitations due to bad knees and hips etc. There is no reason to stop traveling with a river cruise. The scenery and the sights come to you and it can be as relaxed or as strenuous as you desire. This is a perfect stress free way to travel. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the history and the ports of call. We got to visit many UNESCO World Heritage sites. The crew of the Viking Atla was excellent. The food was outstanding. The included shore excursions were great. It was nice to leisurely cruise along the Danube. We loved the scenery in Germany, Austria and Hungary. We were in Budapest for a national holiday and sat on the top deck watching the fireworks. This was an added bonus. The entire staff made us feel welcome. This was our first river cruise and we didn't know what to expect. Although there aren't as many activities there is still plenty to do. The entertainment consisted of a piano player. He was outstanding. With fewer passengers than on an ocean cruise you meet a lot more of them. We met 2 sisters from California at dinner and quite a few people on our land portio of the tour and we hope to stay in contact with them. A river cruise is a much more intimate experience. Read Less

I have filled out reviews two other times on this one cruise I went on. I took my son, daughter, her husband, their two children 13 and 16 at the time - First week of August 2016, on the Danube River Cruise. It was a convenient meeting with a Viking rep in Nuremburg. The staff on board was so polite and helpful. We all loved the walking tours. It was nice to have a few hours in several ports as my "kids" really liked exploring during that time. The cabin was just fine - though it was the lowest price. It was always clean and neatened up for us. I have food allergies and was very thoroughly attended to by the chef, the cooks and the wait staff. So many special dishes were made for me and were delicious and well enjoyed. I would go again on Viking. In fact a few months after that Danube trip I made reservations for a Caribbean cruise and will take my son (53) along again. We travel in January 2018. I'm eager for the further adventure on Viking. Read Less

We wanted to go to Romania. Especially Transylvania. This was the only cruise that went to Romania. The tours in the other countries were fabulous, especially Hungary. One of the best activities was the in-home visit to a resident's home. It was very enlightening. She served us delicious pastries and coffee! We had some good conversations. Food on the ship was delicious and very abundant! My favorite was the buffet breakfasts. We also had lunch on the deck every day which was incredible. Dinners onboard were wonderful and there was a good variety. I loved the activities in the lounge. We had native dancers in every port. The lounge was great for a little snack and a drink before dinner. Also we were briefed about our next days' activities there. The cabin was amazing! Not one inch of space was wasted. Plenty of room for all your belongings. Our cabin attendant treated us wonderfully!!! All in all it was a super trip! Read Less

While it took me 47 years to get my husband to go on a cruise,we have taken 3 in the last 2 years--the first to Alaska for 7 days, this past spring break on a Disney Cruise for 4 days with our children and grandchildren, and then the 15 day European River cruise. All 3 of the cruises were totally different, but the River Cruise was quite spectacular. We traveled with my husband's 2 sisters and one of his brothers and their spouses. While we weren't together all of the time, we had enough quality time with each couple to classify it as a family reunion. Since the size of the boat was much smaller than your typical cruise ship, we were able to meet some wonderful people on the cruise as well. I can't say enough about the staff. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating. Nothing we asked for was denied. When I couldn't get the available laptops to work for me, they gave me a laptop to keep in my room. This made me feel so much more in touch with my family and friends at home. The waiters were wonderful--Milo made sure that my wine glass was never empty. The housekeeping staff was thorough and quick. They got in and got out before you knew it. Since we had never been to Europe, this was a fantastic way to see lots of countries and never have to repack and unpack until the cruise was completed. The guides were all knowledgeable and friendly, and most spoke very good English. They enabled us to learn while having a grand time. All in all, the trip was wonderful, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. In fact, we hope to take a Viking river cruise to France in 2 years for my 70th birthday. Read Less

This was our first river cruise. We extended our stay 2 nights in Amsterdam at the beginning to acclimate to the time change before the cruise started and we extended our stay 3 nights in Prague following the cruise. Would highly recommend doing both of those things. We had varied weather so would suggest that you pack for layering. Viking did not disappoint; they were there for us every step of our trip. Our tour guides in every port were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. They offered a surprise tour with the chef in Vienna that was so much fun. Sailing into Budapest after dinner was magical. The Nuremberg World War II side tour was overwhelming; would highly suggest doing that. We also did the evening concert in Vienna and would also recommend that, too. Our room on the third floor was small but there was room for everything and we did not feel crowded. This truly was the trip of a lifetime and we are so glad we opted for the long cruise with extra days before and after. Read Less
