I have been to several countries since 1992, but never to Hungary, Austria and Germany. The cruise was wonderful traveling along the Danube River. It was wonderful not having to always leave the ship to see so many interesting sights. We had an outside balcony so we could sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. We really liked the optional tours we took by bus. I had a bi-lateral knee operation two years ago and the walking tour was excellent, as I was in the leisure strollers group and I used my cane. The guides were so well versed and ready to answer any questions we had. The food was excellent and we had many dining choices such as buffet, sit down dinners and snacks and we got to choose from standard choices like hamburgs and sandwiches and ethnic foods, like Hungarian Goulash. I taught a Foods class and attended the Culinary Institute in Hyde park, N.Y., so i know what a good chef we had. I love classical music and the concert by the residence Orchestra at a castle in Vienna was wonderful. I also taught History at one time and the trip to the courtroom where the Nazis were on trial was spell binding. The guide was such an excellent speaker and during the hour we were there, the guide was spell binding. The service was excellent and if we wanted anything, such as more sauce for a meat, it arrived immediately after it was requested. I certainly would go again. I haven't been to Sweden and my Paternal Grand-Mother was born in Stockholm, so Id like go go there. Read Less

Where we were going, have done Viking before and liked it. We did explore Budapest a bit before departure. The ship is spacious and very friendly staff. We had to switch boats and the staff recommended who we should look up after switching. Shore excursions are fantastic. Informative and fun with very friendly tour guides. I would and will definitely go again. Once back on the boat there was time to relax a bit before cocktails, dinner and evening entertainment. When changing boats, the transition was as smooth as it could possibly have been. The food on board was all very good. There were plenty of options so everyone could have just what the wanted. We did purchase the silver drink package and it was definitely worth the money. I woill plan another Viking riverboat cruise and ocean cruise in the future. Thank you for making it such a great experience. Read Less

We love Viking and this trip was no exception. We were previously on the Jarl for the Romantic Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest with extensions in Prague and Budapest. This trip was different in that it was more educational and less site seeing. The Passage to Eastern Europe on the Atla and the tours did site seeing, but we were also provided a more in depth view into how Communism, the Serbian-Croatian War (& Yugoslavia), affected Eastern Europe and how it still affects it today. Some of it is sobering, but I learned a lot! Countryside is beautiful! The only downside was that some of the ports were not on cities so you could not simply walk off the ship and browse around town. Some excursions were an hour+ away. The ship, as on our previous cruise, was nice and clean. The staff go out of their way to know you by name and your preferences for everything from how you like your room to what you prefer to drink with a meal. And, as for meals! Well, if you walk away hungry it is your fault. The staff always makes sure to take care of you. If you order something and want something different they are always accommodating. This is no different with the rest of the staff - everyone will do their best to accommodate you if you just ask. We are in our 40s and were concerned the first cruise that we would be outcasts. We should not have worried a bit! We have managed to make friends of all ages (40 & up, that is) onboard. We are already booked for another Viking trip, but next time it will be on one of their cruise ships. i can't wait! Read Less

There were three primary reasons we took this cruise. The first was the outstanding reputation of Viking Cruises. We talked with a number of well-seasoned cruise travelers who all said Viking was the best. The second was the fact that the Viking Long Boats only had 190 guests. Neither my wife nor I would ever want to do a cruise with thousands of guests. The third was the itinerary of the Romantic Danube cruise. We both were very impressed with the planning and professionalism prior to our departure. The easy access resources through the Viking web page, getting information about the optional activities, the helpfulness and professionalism every time we called or had a question. The preparation part could not have been easier. We actually added three days in Prague prior to the cruise as well as two nights in Budapest at the end. Everything, the pre and post stays and the cruise itself were beyond belief. Magical even in many ways. In fact, our room was upgraded to the Explore Suite, which was simply wonderful. The food, the wait staff, the management, the guides could not have been more knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Our first night on the cruise as the waiter is describing the evening's specials I told him I couldn't decide between two of them. His response - "get both of them." The scenery was just outstanding. The countries and cities we visited were just beautiful. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and many were even funny. Everything was so well organized and planned. We meet and made some new friends, one couple whom we keep in touch with and hope to see again. We have had the good fortune to do a fair amount of traveling to some really beautiful places. The second day on the cruise I said to my wife that we should just quit work and travel. But my wife and I both agree that this was the best vacation we have ever had. In fact, we have gone ahead and booked a cruise to Portugal this year and a cruise to Amsterdam in 2019. And we can't wait! Enjoy whatever cruise you select as I am sure you will have the time of your life. Read Less

We choose this cruise so that as Jews, we could see the history of our people. The bad things and the good. The Viking Shore Tours were excellent for viewing, educational tour guides and safe bus drivers. This could not have been any better organized. We felt that the amount of free time was about right and the cities where we stopped and visited offered a great deal of different history as well as beautiful sites. We did encounter people in several of our visited cities that were extremely unfriendly, non communicative and not helpful when asking about their wares. We enjoy cruising on Viking for the very reason, everything is taken care of. No worries as to where to eat, how to get a taxi and how to find our way back to the ship. However, I let called to make sure that I would have only white chicken breast and lots of fruit and vegetables since I don't eat any meat at all. I also told our waiter several times yet the menu was poor for me. The chef said the menu came from corporate office and he had to follow it. Would you want to eat a pain chicken breast on top of mashed potatoes for 7 days? I think not and I think the chef shut have been able to have more variety. I hope your Corporate office will take note of this. It was embarrassing to sit at the Captains dinner with no plate of food!! The staff on Viking is truly the most helpful, pleasant and knowledgeable. Viking left us stranded in Paris for over 7 hours, bumping us off of three different planes to Nuremberg. I finally demanded to be flown to Amsterdam and then to Nuremberg which Air France did after many phone calls to Viking Atla. I could not reach anyone in the CA office as it was too early. We ask to fly in early so that I could celebrate my birthday with my Germany friends and family. The luncheon was over and people had returned to their homes when we arrive at the ship at 6:45pm when we were suppose to be at the ship at 10:00 AM. This memory is forever gone and a very sad one to have missed. I also let the waiter, as well noted when I booked the cruise that it was a Birthday celebration for me and an anniversary for my brother and sister in law. After many reminders, finally on Saturday, the anniversary was celebrated. We requested on Tuesday or Wednesday. Our waiter did nothing for my birthday and again, so disappointing to me and my family. I ate most of my meals on the back of the deck with soups and salads. When on an excursion, I would find a nice restaurant and eat my main meal off ship. We turned all of our paper work in to the front desk of Atla and we were told that they had submitted all of this documentation to Viking. As of today, we have not had any contact with Viking or Air France. I would appreciate this information be given your immediate attention and contact us. This was or second Viking cruise and we have referred several families to Viking. I expect to have some compensation for this frustration and disappointing experience. It definitely dampened our trip. Read Less

We chose it because of good reviews, both from online and personal contacts, and because it suited our needs. We didn't need the bell and whistles that many of the higher priced river cruise lines offer. The decor is wonderful, food great, service impeccable - just luxurious enough for us. And what really made it special was the crew actually seemed to like what they're doing and enjoyed the passengers. Don't know if it's training, or just hiring the right people, or that Viking treats its employees well - but they all seemed to be having fun! Makes a big difference for the passenger experience. We also booked our flights through Viking and they took care of everything...more than I expected! We hadn't traveled internationally for 10 years, so it was great to have our "hands held" for this trip. All and all, we would do another Viking Cruise again in a heartbeat! Read Less

Great overall experience and very educational. Budapest is a wonderful city with many great outdoor cafes and restaurants. We visited many great cities along the Danube to include Vienna, Passau,Nurenberg and finally the October fest in Munich which did not disappoint. This was our 2nd Viking river cruise with the 1st being the Rhine river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland. We find September a great time of year to be traveling the waterways of Europe due to local wine festivals ongoing at each port of call. A great overall experience! The ship Atla and it`s crew were very accommodating and we received wonderful service with accomodations being very appropriate .The ship was very well maintained and extremely clean which we hold to high standards. Our tour guides were all very well versed and extremely knowledgeable making our travel an everlasting memory. We are anticipating another river cruise in the near future and certainly will have Viking in our forseeable future plans.Thank You! Read Less

It was a nice clean ship. Plenty of open, comfortable areas to relax while on the ship. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. Overall they gave incredible service. Clear information given on activities and times for each day, with added tips for preparing for weather or difficulty on each day's excursions. We were traveling with a wheelchair, which didn't get transferred with one of our flights. The Concierge was wonderful about keeping us updated on the status as he worked with the airline to get it caught up with the ship. I would have preferred more time sailing during the day to enjoy the sites from the river. Having a veranda wasn't much use the multiple times we were stacked with other ships when docked. If I do another river cruise, I would probably not spend the money to have one of those rooms. I wanted to sit out and enjoy the views of the river and shore, not another ship. The meals were a wonderful mix of selections. The included excursions were great to get a taste of each city. Most of the city guides were enjoyable, besides being informative. I would and have recommended a cruise with Viking to others. Read Less

We have taken Viking cruises in the past and have never been disappointed. The embarkation and disembarkation went extremely well with crew members being very responsive. The Danube cruise was outstanding. The crew was excellent in displaying customer service and the ports-of-calls were excellent. The tours/shore excursions were well done and very informative! The ship entertainment was also very good and the dining could not have been better. We especially like our extra days in Budapest where we hired a tour guide and took a wonderful tour of the entire city and the surrounding towns. We highly recommend staying the extra two days in Budapest and touring that great city. We will be planning our next trip to Europe in the very near future and look forward to our next cruise. The Wi-Fi on board was less than usable so maybe Viking will improve that portion of the cruise in the future. Read Less
