We chose the Mediterranean Odyssey 12-day cruise because of the itinerary offered. All of the ports were cities/countries we wanted to visit. Our cabin was large, impeccable and very comfortable. Everyone from our cabin steward, guest services, bar and restaurant servers, etc. treated us like royalty. We enjoyed the opportunity to dine casually or fine dining in the other restaurants. We had a great selection of entrees and wines from the region we had visited that day. We also enjoyed the diversified evening entertainment and music. Our shore excursions were included in the cost of the cruise and were well planned and on-time. My only complaint is that sometimes we didn’t have much time after the tours to explore and shop or eat as we had to shuttle back to the ship. We enjoyed the intimacy of cruising on a small ship and would highly recommend VIKING for your travels. VIKING is top notch from embarkation to disembarkation! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we liked the itinerary, and we've taken three Viking River Cruises in the past, and we were very impressed with the river cruises we'd taken. The ship was beautiful and very easy to get around. The cabin was roomy and very comfortable. The dining was fabulous - the food excellent in the regular dining, the buffet and the specialty restaurants. We typically had the same table or close to it in the evening dining room, and the wait staff were terrific! The service was great, our cabin steward was very attentive and thorough in attending the cabin. We enjoyed the ports we visited and the shore excursions. The included shore excursions were typically pretty crowded - the buses seemed to be full and all left at the same time and returned the same time, which resulted in long lines to get back on the ship. This was about the only down side to the cruise. Read Less

We arrived two days prior to embarkation and explored Venice. Spent another two days in Barcelona, after debarkation. Both embarkation and debarkation went very smoothly - best of all other cruise lines we have sailed on. We loved the cabin (explorer suite) and the great service provided by the ship's staff. This was the second Viking cruise we have been on. We are totally sold on Viking and their great service. The meal service, at all the different locations was excellent. We like the fact that it is not pretentious and that they don't "nickel and dime" you with side charges. Even though we sailed during the "rainy" season in the Mediterranean, we were very fortunate with only one rainy day on shore and one at sea. We also like the smaller sized ships which makes it more personable. We already made plans to cruise the Norwegian Fjords in 2020. We look forward to future cruises, both river and ocean with Viking! The itinerary, length of trip, expense, and outstanding reviews led us to this booking. The food was delicious, and the wait staff was well trained. The spa afforded a lovely break at the end of the day. The clientele were generally older which made for quieter cruising. The full English tea daily was magnificent and a great time to meet new people.i my husband and I enjoyed all the amenities onboard and were delighted to find that there were no hidden expenses. Al-in-all this was an excellent value for the quality of service provided. We have already booked another trip and chose to try a river cruise after talking with seasoned Viking travelers. We will be taking a trip down the Rhine and Mosel rivers which will bring back many memories of our early married life when my husband was stationed with the USAF in Germany more than 40 years ago. My wife and I chose this cruise because it includes a tremendous opportunity to see a lot of Art Galleries and Museums as well as locations that are historically and socially significant. As has been our experience with all of our other Viking cruises, all facets of travel - from arrival to departure and everything in between - were handled beautifully by the Viking organization. The setting was elegant, and the people were incredible! Our cabin was roomy and well kept. The food was delicious and plentiful. Vikings chefs really know how to cook a variety of food styles and can please the most picky eaters. The specialty restaurants offer an elegant setting to try new dishes, and the staff in them are friendly and personable. The entertainment was fun - really enjoyed the classical music in the Living Room in the afternoons and evenings as well as in Wintergarden during tea time. We found the service to be second to none. The included excursions were fun and informative, and the optional excursions offered a wide variety of experiences you don't find on other lines. All things considered, we can't wait for our next trip on Viking! Read Less

We so enjoy traveling with Viking. We have been on their ocean and river cruises. The ocean vessels are lovely ships, with great staff and good food. Rooms are well equipped and nice size. We also enjoy the entire interior look of the ships. It is nice hat the layout on each ocean vessel is the same so when you cruise, it feels like you are coming home. Smaller ship, less people, no casinos, peaceful surroundings. We also appreciate Viking’s policy of guests must be over 18 years of age. No running, screaming kiddos roaming the ship. We find on shorter cruises there is a different clientele which was a little disappointing this time. Many folks we ate with talked about the lack of following the dress policies at the dining rooms. Viking needs to watch that this abuse doesn’t continue to ruin the cruise experience for others. People coming to the restaurants in bathrobes, minimal bathing covers and torn shirts and pants are unacceptable. Read Less

The ship was just the right size we thought with all the necessary accommodations ie stores, spa, restaurants, bars ,pools and entertainment facilities. The cabin was very comfortable with such nice extras as the heated bathroom floor and nice view from the outside balcony and the daily room cleanup service was friendly and did an excellent job.The restaurants were all 1st class service and we enjoyed very excellent meals at all of them daily. The entertainment offerings were excellent and enjoyable including the bars and the service provided by the bartenders. We enjoyed all the ports that we visited and the multiple excursions available at each stop. The guides that we had on all the excursions we went on were excellent and very knowledgeable of the history of the sites and were very good in their explanations.Overall , we were delighted with our entire cruise with this Viking ship and crew and would highly recommend to all our family and friends. We wanted to visit Croatia and we had not spent much time in Italy so the pre-cruise stay in Tuscany with the 8-day cruise from Venice to Athens was great fit. It did not disappoint! We were greeted at Florence airport and comfortably transported to Resort Villa La Veronica in Greve en Chianti where we met up with several other couples. Host Anita was like a mother hen making sure all needs were met. After three enjoyable days in Tuscany we were delivered to Venice and escorted to the port for easy embarkation. The cruise itself was fabulous. The food at every restaurant is like the best in any city. The Chef's Table was not to my husband's liking, but that is just that he is not that fancy in his tastes, but I loved it. We did not go to the more nightclub type room, but the entertainment each evening in the upstairs Explorer's Lounge was fabulous. We also took advantage of the spa for massages and I had my hair washed and blown out which was a lovely time saver. We went for the extra excursions into the countrysides in Croatia and Montenegro. In retrospect I would have preferred to have spent more time more time in Split and Dobrovnik with the included tour. The optional excursions were great, but more for those who have previously spent time in those cities. The Highlights of Montenegro tour was very worthwhile, with a hair raising ride that was actually one of the highlights of the trip. We booked another trip while on board. Our first opportunity to cruise with Viking. Loved it. Will be looking to cruise Viking again. This cruise had 2 days in our departure port of Venice, Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, port for Olympia and disembark in Athens. Really enjoyed the stops at Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Corfu. This cruise fit perfectly with a marathon tour group that my wife and I continued on with after our arrival in Athens. We stayed another beautiful 8 days in Greece, as my wife and I ran the Athens marathon and 5K races. The Viking Sun is a beautiful ship. All six of Viking's ships are virtually the same; 975 passengers, Great food, Excellent dinning room and two Specialty dinning rooms. Every cabin is spacious and has a balcony. Wine and beer with your meals are included. Each deck has a very nice laundry room, which is free. Excellent spa, fitness center, sauna and even a snow room. There are places to sit and relax everywhere on this ship - never crowded. Superb service. Best of all, Viking offers a free excursion at every port. We had several very knowledgeable guides.. Small ship experience very good however staff attentiveness is much less than on Viking River Cruises. Dinning options were very good. However, trying to get a coffee refill at breakfast was nearly impossible. Shore excursions were again not as good as the river cruise excursions - ship staff were not on top of local tour guides. Quality of shore guides was very inconsistent. Often excursions were delayed starting because local guides were not all there. Ship staff seemed unconcerned about this. Cabins were very comfortable and amenities good. Cabin staff excellent and responsive Public spaces beautifully designed and comfortable. Onboard shops were interesting and had unique items. The most attentive staff was in the perfume shop; she was friendly and engaging. The steam room and snow cave were very relaxing and a unique experience. Viking needs to focus on staff training to make sure that each staff member treats each guest as a valued person - start with a smile and a pleasant hello. Read Less

I took my daughter in law on this cruise with me. The ship was pristine, and the crew incredible. Our every need was addressed (not that we had many due to the amenities). The food was wonderful, and the entertainment opportunities were great. If we wanted to have a quiet night and just have a glass of wine, there was a place for that. If we wanted to listen to music there was many options in different areas of the ship. The shore excursion choices were many, depending on how much walking you wanted to do. The evening port talks were always educational. My daughter in law is an artist and enjoyed the art on the ship and the ambiance the ship provided. The whole experience with Viking is exactly how I expected, always the best. I can't praise Viking enough, and I am looking forward to my next cruise with them in November. Read Less

We have sailed on Viking River Cruises so trying Viking Ocean made sense. Inaugural cruise, around the world, why not? We were very pleased with the entire experience, we met wonderful people, travelers and crew. Small ship meant that we didn’t overwhelm any one location. Sea days were great, so many activities so little time to fit them in. Shore excursions were a mixture of highlights bus tours and overnights off the ship giving everyone a choice of how they want to spend their time. On sea days cooking classes were offered, hands on with new foods and new tastes to try. Buffets, dinning room and specialty restaurants offered a wide variety of choices. Sushi, pizza and wonderful gelato we offered everyday. We were never wanting for food as snacks were available. Cruise director and staff kept things moving smoothly. Would we do it again, absolutely, and we are going to finish sailing around the world in August 18. Read Less

In 2016 we took our first VIking River cruise and were so impressed that we booked our first VIking ocean cruise the following year. My husband and I have cruised often (Diamond status with Royal Caribbean and Elite with Celebrity). VIking definitely has a different feel. It is more relaxed and upscale. Embarkation in Venice was easy and quick. We booked air transportation on our own since we included extra days in Italy pre and post cruise. We traveled with four friends and had three cabin next to each other on deck 5. Everything is new and sparkling clean on the Sun. We found the cabin to have adequate space for storing clothes and toiletries. We liked the location across from the launderette, which all of us used more than once. There never was a time we could not access a washer or dryer. Late afternoon and early evening seemed to be the busiest times. You really need to read the directions to make sure detergent is added. That is located separate from the stacked washer/dryer. We dined at Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s and enjoyed both. We never had an issue getting seated at a table for six in The Restaurant. The majority of the tables are for two, but some are located close to other tables so you could have conversations with others if you chose to On one occasion we all felt too full, after having a large lunch at port, to eat a multi-course meal. We were surprised when we checked out the World Cafe and found a seafood bar with crab legs, large prawns, and an excellent sushi bar. We loved the crab legs and sushi as well as other dishes there. We all purchased the Silver drink package and found it to be a good value for us. Viking’s prices on the drink menu are reasonable compared to other cruise lines but we liked being able to choose more wine options as well as Grey Goose vodka and Makers Mark bourbon cocktails. Also when we travel with friends, we find ourselves enjoying the cocktail lounges more. Explorer Lounge was our favorite. We booked five included excursions and two at additional cost. The only one we should have skipped was the included tour in Messina. It was just a bus tour of the city rather than a walking tour. We did not have time for any enrichment lectures and only saw one show in the theatre. We all loved the spa area with the warm bubbling pool, snow grotto, steam room, etc. The Deck 7 pool area was very nice but our weather was just a bit cool to enjoy the pool. The retractable roof made the area usable every day. My husband and I used the small gym a couple of times. It was almost always empty. It would have been nice to have at least one sea day to enjoy more of the ship’s amenities but this itinerary visited a port each day. Frankly, we loved our vacation and have no complaints at all. We are not very hard to please but one does have expections when paying Viking’s prices. We all felt VIking delivered on all fronts and we will definitely cruise with them again. I cannot wait! Always wanted to see Italy. Been to France, Germany, aAmsterdam, Switzerland, Great Britain. I had already been on a River cruise up the Rhine and liked it very much. Viking offers the elements that are important to me. Trip to the departure port was very long and tiring though. No direct flight. Changed planes 3x. Cabin ok. Comfortable beds. Dining very creative. Especially liked the Italian restaurant. Food was good. Service excellent. Excursions excellent but little time to shop. Also shops closed in afternoon which added to problem of little time to shop. Excursion to the farmhouse where we helped make the pasta was the best!! We were lucky to have another excursion where we ate home cooked Italian food. I would love to go to Italy again but the plane trip is just too much for me. I have been on many cruises but Viking Cruises are the best. A little pricey but worth it. Thank you for such an enjoyable and memorable time. The entertainment crew were very good. Especially liked the Beatles night as I am a BIG fan of Paul McCartney. Also, my daughter was with me and she fell during an excursion and was very sore afterward. The tour guide reported it to the ship personnel. I was upset that no one contacted us from the ship just to see if she was ok. Read Less

We have done 3 Viking Cruises now, 2 river and 1 ocean. All three have been truly an experience to remember and all good. The ship was brand new which made it even better. The crew was very eager to make a good impression (which they did). All of the cabins have an ocean view with a veranda which make for excellent sightseeing as you enter and leave port. Not much else as most of the cruising is done at night away from shore. The cabins are roomy enough as little time is spent there since there are plenty of activities to participate in or entertainment to view. The service as always is impeccable and it always seems the staff is there just for you but they take care of everyone the same. Sitting in the Explorers Lounge on the bow or the Aquavit Terrace on the stern really allows an individual to relax and get to know your fellow cruisers or just sit and contemplate where you are and enjoy the view. This is not a family type cruise meant for young children and there is no casino or climbing wall or zip lines. It's for those that want to learn and think about their place in the world. Shore excursion are plentiful and there is at least one included in the fare each day with other optional one available. Sometimes it's hard to chose but you can;t do it all in one voyage. We are already signed up for another River Cruise in France for my 65th. Can't wait. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of Viking's excellent reputation for river cruising and hoped it carried over to the ocean. It did - everything about this brand new ship is beautiful. The artful design of every space is stunning. The amenities are all you can ask for and the service is warm, friendly and efficient. Mark the cruise director could not be more pleasant. The excursions have all been very informative and enjoyable. The included excursion in Crotone (the only port where we did not book an optional excursion) was just OK. My favorite excursions were the olive grove in Bari, and Pompeii in Naples. The one place where they FAILED MISERABLY is the specialty restaurant reservations that are "guaranteed" with certain cabin levels. We attempted to book them online within 2 hours of when they opened (in August) but were told that all tables for 2 were already booked and we could not book a seat at a shared table online - that would have to be done onboard. While frustrating, we were assured we could book any time once onboard. When we arrived at the ship the first day we were ushered to lunch upon arrival. When we finished lunch we went to the cabin and immediately called for our shared table reservations. The line just rang and rang for several attempts. We went to guest services and they said that you could only make dinner reservations during breakfast and lunch hours (which were now over for the day). The experience of trying to reach someone by phone and just hearing it ring was very frustrating and could have easily been avoided by adding a message stating the hours that reservations are accepted and not making me walk to guest services to find that out. The next morning we had an early excursion and didn't get to attempt to book our two "guaranteed" reservations until early afternoon on the first day of the cruise. At that time we were told that all reservations in the specialty restaurants were already taken and we would be put on the waitlist. I explained that we had booked a better cabin on the ship so that we would be guaranteed reservations in Manfredi's and the Chef's Table and they just said sorry - they are already all booked. We were put on the waitlist and on the last night were finally given a time slot at the Chef's Table restaurant. It was very good and I would have loved to try Manfredi's as well. Maybe next time. We were on the maiden voyage of the Viking Sun from Venice Italy to Athens Greece. This ship is stunning and the staff very efficient. Can you believe the bathroom floors are heated or air conditioned - which ever you prefer? The curtains in the cabin open and close with a touch too. We had two cabins, 5082 and 5080 and both met our needs perfectly. Just a note - the beds have feather pillows which you can have switched out if you want. Unfortunately we had need for the services of the medical staff - thanks for their caring attention! We found the meals to be excellent and served quickly. The evening buffet had whatever was on the menu for The Restaurant. Less crowded. Reservations are needed for The Chef's Table. Mixed reviews on the fixed menu by the four of us. (I hated it) Reservations are also needed for Manfredi's. This is where we had our worst service and the food - just ok. Many lunches we at The Pool Grill - yum. I suggest buying the silver beverage plan. With meals you get upgraded wine and of course alcohol. Two in our party are Gluten Free and our needs were well taken care of. The machines in the laundry were free as well as the detergent. As for entertainment - we only saw a few but enjoyed what we saw. It was great that at the beginning of the cruise all the officers of the ship were introduced and they were even seen walking around during the week! Rare indeed. The cruise director was very hands on. My husband and I are in our late 50's and our children 28 and 25 were with us. Unfortunately we found the variety of the shore excursions to be poor and not "active" enough. I suggest finding noncruise ship excursions for some cities. My son and I took the excursion to Medjugorje.in Bosnia. Not enough time was given to this religious experience. Note - the other guests on the ship were NOT the oxygen, walker crowd. We were very busy enjoying our ports and didn't get much chance to use the pool, spa, gift shops etc. The Viking Sun has A LOT to offer. Note - we left out of Venice and ended up in Athens the beginning of Oct, and I expected the temps to be a little warmer. I highly recommend the Viking Sun for a lovely cruise. This is not your typical cruise where the horn blows when you leave port or there are constant announcements over the PA - it is very classy but not formal. Read Less

Itinerary... and value! My brother and I have always wanted to visit Portugal and the Bahamas, which were both spectacular. The stop in the Azores was an additional treat! The crew was exceptional, and the entertainment surpassed my expectations. (I am a musician, and have high expectations.) Well done in every respect. Even my trip to the Ship's Doctor for a sinus infection was a highlight! The speaker for the cruise was also a highlight, as was our visits to the two specialty restaurants. Our cabin was spacious and comfortable, and the public rooms were wonderfully laid out and beautifully decorated. Bravo! We especially liked the small - but very informative - exhibit on Vikings. Very well done, as was everything else on the cruise. We hope to do another Viking Ocean cruise in the future... having now done two river cruises and one ocean cruise. An unexpected maiden voyage of this beautiful ship. While many joked that it had a new car smell, we would have appreciated knowing in advance that we were the guinea pigs. That said, there were very few teething problems, and the ship operated smoothly. In particular, the universally pleasant, cheerful, helpful, and polite staff were a cut above other ships. They made a big difference in our day. The cruise went from Venice to Athens. We spent a few days in each outside the cruise. The ship was expected to be a recharging interlude, but the ports and tours were so good that we were kept hopping every day. Embarkation at both ends was a breeze, with many staff pointing out the direction to go in a potentially confusing port. Our junior suite was well laid out, with a balcony that actually allowed you to move around and stretch a bit. It included laundry service and a well stocked mini bar. Room service was excellent. We had breakfast sent up most days. The food won't win any awards, but it is certainly adequate. It's a smaller ship, so there's a buffet and two upscale restaurants. One focused on Nordic food, which didn't appeal, leaving only the other Italian style option. There's also a grill at the pool, and small bistro in the explorers lounge. The buffet is adequate, but choices are limited. The lineup for the gelato bar in the desert section is a tip off that the rest of the selection isn't much. There’s a magnificent Nordic spa area with huge bubble pool, saunas, steam room, cold plunge pool, a cold bucket splash and snow room. Alas the large bubble pool broke the first day and didn’t get fixed until the last. A major disappointment as it figured in our decision to take this ship. The steam room needs more light. It’s dark to the point of unsafe. I wish the saunas weren’t on timers during opening hours, as you sometimes have to wait a while for them to heat up. The gym is very well equipped. The hot tub jets in both the main and infinity pools were often broken, but the heat did work. There’s a broad range range of books throughout the ship. The public areas are surprisingly peaceful, with the explorers lounge having a two level view forward. Bars are never far away, and wait staff are attentive. Liquor and wine prices were very reasonable, and often included. Entertainment was low key. A classical trio, pianist, and a string player are the mainstays. No rock bands into the wee hours here. The included shore excursions were excellent. We took 3 which all had a bus and walking tour in groups of around 25 people for 2-3 hours. The optional excursions were equally good. We took two, and the Kotor trip through the mountains is not to be missed. While not Viking's fault, a couple of ports were swamped with people. Kotor is a small town, and 4 cruise ships dumped 5,000+ people into it. We escaped via an optional tour, but even when we returned some hours later, our guide could hardly get us around the town. Corfu wasn't much better. Oh, and don’t miss afternoon tea. It sounds quaint, but is well done. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary, the newness of the ship, the fact that it would not have young children aboard and there was no casino. We had taken a Viking river cruise and wanted to see the layout of the new ocean liners. We knew the food and service would be the best and it did not disappoint. The ship was spectacular with no crowds or lines anywhere. We liked the fact that there was a gym, several pools, and choices of restaurants. We are very private people and loved that you could get a table for two with no trouble. We enjoyed the free beer & wine at lunch, dinner and room service. Our cabin (deluxe veranda) was adequate for storage and the bathroom had plenty of room for everything. We both LOVED the heated floors! Favorite eating place was Manfredi's, the Italian restaurant. The tiramisu presentation was very unusual and I loved it. Least favorite was Chef's Table although you can substitute with a little warning if you prefer something like chicken from the Restaurant instead of a main fish course. WE LOVED breakfast at Mamsen's. NO crowd at all and delicious waffles. Try not to miss it. On our cruise The Restaurant (main dining room) was short on staff and the meal took WAY too long with long waits between courses. The included shore excursions gave us an overview of each port and there were plenty of optional excursions to choose from if we were already familiar with a port. Groups were small and we appreciated everyone being on time and excited about each outing. We will definitely book another Viking ocean cruise, probably in the Caribbean next time. Read Less

This was our second ocean cruise and we liked the first Viking Cruise Ship (Viking Sky) starting on Feb. 25, 2017 so much that we booked this second trip on the Viking Ocean Cruise line on the sister ship the Viking Sun starting on October 4, 2017. It was so nice that we have already booked a third cruise with Viking. We also had marvelous extensions on both ends of the cruise first in Florence and then in Athens. While we had been to Florence, Venice, and Athens once before (over 20 years ago) this gave us a chance to see some new things and revisit a few fantastic places too. The pre-extension was essentially all inclusive with wonderful food and locales for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and great included tours of Florence, Sienna, and San Gimignano. It was a small group and we received personal attention but also had enough free time at each site. We stayed at a wonderful villa in the Tuscan countryside near Florence. We then had a good and quick bus ride to Venice where we boarded the Viking Sun and found it even more inclusive, luxurious, and wonderful. We had included and few extra special tours of Venice, Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, and Olympia. The food on the ship was fantastic. There were great and uncrowded hot tubs, pools, and infinity pool. There was some nice entertainment and great bars throughout the ship. The food was very nice with two great specialty restaurants (included), a formal restaurant, and a buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Obviously we put on weight even with the walking tours! Finally we had a fantastic extension in Athens with a tour of the acropolis and museum and then tours of the Pelopenese and Delphi. Great included lunches and time on our own for great dinners in Athens. Viking handled the transfers very well and smoothly picked us up at the Florence airport and dropped us off at thee Athens airport. Somehow both of our Viking Ocean cruises have been the inaugural trip for each ship. Both went very smoothly. Read Less

We chose this cruise when we saw the exceptionally great price and the itinerary to places we'd never seen. We were very impressed with the Viking staff who helped with the reservations and answering questions post cruise. When you talked to someone there, they knew or got the answers immediately and didn't switch me to another department. They always followed up the conversation with a confirmation of what they'd told me and ask if there is anything else they could do; assuring me that I should feel free to contact them again. The embarkation was seamless and we chose the room on the absolute stern which gave us great views, of both sides and quiet with on one passing our suite. We found that there was amply room for relaxation on the decks and the spa on the lowest deck with so many free amenities; snow room, two different pools, warmed relaxation beds and plenty of loungers w/pads and towels. Also had a steam room. Excursions were free at every port; there were paid for excursions but we found that the free ones suited our needs. We always had plenty of time to explore the cities after the walking tours of the town. Excursions were grouped in small numbers and left at staggered times so that everyone was not at the same place at the same time. Suite was good but storage space was not adequate for folding clothes. Shelf space was taken up with a coffee pot and cups. Beds in our upgraded suite was so close to the closet that you could barely get into it or even bend over to put on your shoes. That needs some addressed on future ships. Food and the restaurants were not that outstanding. Acoustics in all the restaurants were poor. Tables were so close together that talking with your table mates was difficult because everyone had to raise their voice to be hear which led to the noise increasing. The noise level needs some adjustment; perhaps some noise abatement panels. We found that the buffet restaurant was good, however. We ate there often. Every staff person really tried hard to please. Will definitely consider Viking Ocean when we travel again. Viking Ocean is so much better than Viking River. Read Less
