This was my first experience with Viking. My wife and I have done less expensive cruises (family events on Royal Caribbean) and more expensive cruises (Alaska on Regent). This cruise hit the sweet-spot for us. We booked our next Viking Ocean cruise while we were on board (Into the Midnight Sun). As the Hotel Manager said at the farewell reception, Viking offers a floating hotel, not a floating amusement park. It is for adults who want to stop in ports of historical, cultural or scenic interest. There is no casino, no climbing wall, modest entertainment, and one small space for those who want to drink and dance into the wee hours (here meaning maybe midnight - I don't know. We never saw it). The food is very good, but not extravagant on most nights. I think a lobster dinner was offered once in the Restaurant. We found the World Cafe buffet very agreeable for dinner - most of the daily specials in the Restaurant were also available here and the sushi/shellfish counter was available every night. Often, after a tiring excursion, 90 minutes to 2 hours in the Restaurant was not appealing. The World Cafe made a good dinner easy. Manfredi's - the Italian specialty restaurant - was a very pleasant alternative for a couple of dinners. The Chef's Table is less successful. We greatly enjoyed one menu and did not at all enjoy another. There were four different menus on our 13 night cruise, each offered for 3 or 4 consecutive nights. We found that booking the specialty restaurants before the cruise had a drawback - we might be booked in one on a night when the Restaurant itself was offering something particularly interesting. There is a desk for rescheduling Manfredi's and the Chef's Table, but this issue is a complication for those who plan in advance. The average age was probably 60-65. I don't think we saw a couple under 50. There are no facilities for children and this is not a ship for singles. The youngest cruisers seemed to be mother-daughter pairs with daughters starting in their mid-40's. The ship itself is decorated elegantly. Muted tones. Neutral colors. Nothing loud or ostentatious. Service is calm, polite, efficient, and friendly, although the World Cafe staff seemed stressed at key breakfast times prior to excursions. The included excursions were better than we expected them to be, and once we learned to read the excursion descriptions very closely, we cancelled some pre-scheduled excursions that had added costs and rebooked on the included excursion. Excursions were weak when the port was weak. Naples was the stop we would replace first. All of our ports except Monaco were at the dock. In Monaco, we dropped anchor and used tenders. Our one experience with tenders was a bit chaotic and could be improved. Disembarkation was very well organized. Read Less

Mediterranean Odyssey: My first cruise with Viking was all I hoped it would be. The embarkation went well, port stops were well planned and on time. All of the staff I encountered were friendly, polite, couldn't do enough to help. The food in all of the different sites on the ship was excellent. My group ate at the buffet, The Restaurant, the pool side grill, Manfreddi's, and the Chef's Table. Service was great at all of these areas. It was nice to have a selection of different kinds of food, enough choices for all appetites and/or restrictions. The cabin was fine, at times a bit crowded because of luggage, but nothing that truly interfered with our comfort. The amenities provided were a nice touch. Having a small refrigerator, restocked daily, was nice. Most other trips I have taken did not provide that service. The bathroom was adequate, only problem was trying to regulate the temperature of the water in the shower. Another wonderful feature on this cruise was having laundry facilities available. You could refresh your clothes without having to have someone do that for you. Everything was provided, soap, iron if needed. The port talks were interesting and well presented. We did not find time to attend many of the other offered entertainment venues, but I heard comments from other guests that they enjoyed the dinging revues. There was more than enough room to find areas to relax in, whether outside in the sun or inside in one of the lounges. Overall my first experience with Viking was definitely positive. Read Less

Viking is the best. The food is wonderful, the service fantastic, and the staff is friendly. Viking took care of us from the moment we arrived at the airport, and continued until they dropped us off when we left. They were clearly visible when we arrived, took care of the luggage and delivered it to our room. There is so much to learn about other countries and Viking helps you to learn. I appreciated how they incorporated the entertainment, the food and wine, and activities with the location of our stops. The excursions were also led by experienced guides that were able to add there own color to the tour. They were also knowledgable enough to be able to answer questions that were asked. I do appreciate that this is the focus of Viking ~ this is not your party ship. There were many options for dining. Manfredi's and The Chef's Table were both great alternatives to The Restaurant for fine dining. I was able to try new foods that I might not have ordinarily tried. I was never disappointed. The pool areas were also great places to relax. Also, there were quiet places to curl up with a good book, or take a nap! Movies under the stars was a lot of fun. Everything about Viking is great. You can tell they have put much thought into this business. They are also very good to the staff. Everyone would explain why they like to work for Viking. I like to support businesses that are good to their employees. I look forward to the next cruise! Read Less

We sailed from Venice to Split, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Naples, Rome, Livorno, Monaco/Monte Carlo, Toulon and ended up in Barcelona. It was truly the trip of a lifetime for me, never having taken any cruise before! We loved the idea of starting in Venice and ending the voyage in Barcelona. We took an extra day and a half at each end of the trip to see a bit more of each of those cities. Great idea. Gave us a chance to rev up for the cruise on the front end and wind down from the cruise at the back end. While on the cruise itself, we truly can't speak highly enough of the ship's appointments, the entire staff from the wonderful captain to our stateroom steward, the various entertainment choices and lecture offerings, the dining choices (all excellent, by the way) and the shore excursions. Manfreddi's Restaurant, the Chef's Table restaurant and "The Restaurant" were all wonderful as was the more casual restaurant where breakfast, lunch and dinner were always available. The bar up on the 7th deck as well as the bar down on the first deck were delightful places to have a drink and review the fun activities of that particular day! We will definitely consider another cruise in the future, perhaps taking a river cruise the next time for a change of pace! If you have the chance and time to make an ocean cruise trip, Viking Cruise Line is a SUPERB company to book your cruise through! Read Less

This was our first ocean cruise with Viking after 3 river cruises. There is a difference but we adjusted quickly. We picked this cruise because of the itinerary and the sites we could see. We were off the boat almost all the times that were available. The extra tours (on river boats you don't pay for them) were worth what we paid for with few exceptions. And the exceptions were the guides not the tours themselves. Life on the boat was great and in one sense I wish there was more time not on the boat. At first it was ok 13 days we can do it all on the boat. Well 13 days later we probably did 40% of what was offered. Our fault not Vikings. The cabin was what we paid for and lovely! the service was great and I can't say enough about this part. The only downside was the veranda chairs were NOT comfortable at all. The food....hmmm breakfast was good not great. Don't get me wrong there was so much to choose from but unlike the river cruises this food was cooked for 1000 guests and was rather on the bland side. Lunch was good offering quick lunches and buffet as well as restaurant lunches. So you could get whatever you were hungry for. On a lot of our tours lunch on the boat was impossible so we probably had 5 on the boat. Dinners ranged from restaurant quality in any good city to bland food cooked for the masses. The two special resturants were exactly that special. Food to order flavorful and over all excellent. The regular restaurant was very good but again food for the masses. The staff in all the resturants worked their hearts out to make us happy. They were so gracious! The shows were good but don't expect Las Vegas type shows. The cast was talented and engaged the audience. One show was up at the pool deck which I though was great. 2 or 3 of the nights they showed movies on the pool deck too. That was great! Like a drive in without cars!!! One disappointment there was no recognition of previous Viking guests or a reception for Viking explorers. THAT SHOULD BE CORRECTED!!!!!!! If any of this sounds negative or like we had a bad time we have already booked the transatlantic crossing in Febuary of 17. So let that be your real guide. Read Less

We had previously taken the Viking river cruise up the Romantic Danube and enjoyed it very much. We were impressed with how well Viking took care of everything on that cruise that we decided to try the new Viking Star Mediterranean Odyssey for twelve days visiting ten ports we had not been to before. The cruise turned out to be fantastic in every way. The cabin was spacious and clean. The free wi-fi access and access to TV news programs kept us in touch. The ships appointments throughout were first class and comfortable. The cruise never seemed crowded even though the ship was full. The way things are spread out made plenty of room for everyone. The dining was excellent. No matter which of the many dining areas we ate at, we were always impressed with the variety and quality of the food. The added complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner was great and they served some good wines. The staff was always friendly and helpful. Our cabin was made up twice a day and fresh towels when we wanted them. The variety of areas throughout the ship made it comfortable no matter what we were looking for. The Port talks before each port were very informative. The quality of the guest speakers almost everyday were very good. The captain said the ship was not an 'amusement park' and we appreciated that. We met people our own age from all over the world and enjoyed that as one of the high points. We appreciated the included shore excursions and quality guides that made the most of the short time we had in each port. The added live entertainment in the evening was fantastic. Also, live guitarist, and live classical music in the Atrium was very relaxing. Read Less

We had done a river cruise with Viking and we were anxious to try their Ocean Cruise once it launched My husband and I travelled alone. We had planned to go with dear friends, but lost one before the voyage and decided to go ourselves to honor her wishes. The cabin was pleasant and spacious. We loved our verandah. The dining choices were great and we especially enjoyed the Chefs Table. The destination choices were great and we saw so many wonderful countries, cities and towns while not needed to pack and unpack. We kept very busy with the choice of shore excursions and shipboard activities...most very well done. In fact, we probably could have used an extra day at sea to just relax - a fact that surprised us. The highlight tours was definitely Pompeii and St. Paul.de Vence, but all but one were terrific. We did buy several of the additionally offered shore excursions. We have already booked another cruise for the Baltic in 2017 Read Less

My sister and I took this cruise to celebrate our retirement after teaching HS for 35 yrs. we had never been on a cruise before so as 'newbies' it was quite the experience. We became known as "the sisters" by friends and crew alike, which was one of the surprising things! The crew was so personable , kind and friendly! The ship was amazing and we spent the first few days in spare time just roaming in awe of the beauty of the ship! Our cabin was spacious and we loved the private veranda where we spent several mornings eating breakfast and enjoying the view while being catered to 24/7. All accommodations were spacious and again, the crew was terrific. We couldn't have asked for a more pleasant group of people to be around. The food was amazing and we loved having several possible choices for dining! We samples them all, and give all our approval! Also having the waiters and waitresses remember our names and preferences added that touch of class and friendliness. Every evening there was offerings of music, dancing and movies by the pool. Afternoons offered lectures on varying topics including our ports of call as well as timely information on travel and entertainment. It was amazing what all was available! After 10 days on this cruise, we left feeling like we had made new friends and acquaintances, and we're anxious to tell out husbands about it so they could experience this wonderful opportunity too - taking us again of course! We loved every minute and made memories for a lifetime. Thank you Viking! Read Less

Traveled multiple times with Viking on the river cruises. Always wonderful trips. When I received an email on the Ocean cruises it wasn't concerned about booking a trip. My instinct was correct. The ship, the food, all the personnel and the destinations were excellent. The cabin was spacious and well designed. The room was comfortable with enough storage space to stow your belongings. The bathroom was also roomy with the sink area set up for both travelers. The stewards were pretty much invisible but the room was always perfect. All the meals were AMAZING. The specialty dining excellent. There was always somewhere to get a great meal which was helpful when the excursions were at different times each day. The evening shows were great. Also tucked away in the beautiful lounges were fantastic musicians where you sit and have a drink, relax and enjoy. There was always something to do on or off the ship. So much that there were too many choices and I felt there wasn't enough time to enjoy the ship. Some of the excursions that were offered were much more strenuous that advertised with no time to stop to take pictures. But overall they were great. Every port had wonderful guides and drivers. Embarkation and disembarkation worked seamlessly. Travel to and from Europe was good but the stopover at Heathrow is always such a chore. Try to avoid that if you can when you book your travel. The entertainment was excellent, enjoyed everything offered. The shore excursions were excellent as well, very organized, with well informed tour guides. My favorite was the Amalfi Coast drive, especially the stop in Sorrento--a beautiful little town. I also enjoyed the "long" day in Rome. Although I had been there before I enjoyed it all the more this time. I would suggest to anyone who tends to get sea sick to take some medication with you, as the sea tended to get a bit rough in spots, although our trip was November/December and you would expect that at that time of year. The food was wonderful, and the service excellent in the dining rooms. Not so good in the "World Cafe" which is a buffet-type of meal. Read Less

this cruise was chosen for the ports of call, time of the year and past experience with Viking. We can't say enough about this cruise; it was amazing! The service was impeccable; staff went out of their way to make sure we were satisfied and had what we need. One staff even provided some cough drops for a sick co-traveler. The food was great and we loved that everything was included-room service, specialty restaurants, tours. The spa area was fun and unique, especially the snow cave-it snowed!the entertainment was top notch and varied. The local ones that were brought on board, especially the opera singers, really added to the tours and the cities. This ship provides all balcony cabins, which was nice, and the weather was warm enough to enjoy them. Cabins had comfortable seating for 2 with a table big enough to put ones order from room service. The bathroom- bigger than any other cruise ship and wonderful amenities. Most ports were easily accessible but we did opt for a private tour in Florance and wish we would have done so in Rome as well as the included tours tried to do too much. we really enjoyed the tour in Venice and it was even more fascinating as we had taken a gondola ride the night before and got to see the flooding the next morning. This is a cruise is best for adults. We can't say enough about the service-after our tour in Rome the staff met us with champagne and singing, just an example of the positive attitude and a great time! Read Less

We have been on three Viking river cruises, thought the Med cruise and Viking Star was worth a try, even though we thought the ship would be too big for us. It was wonderful! Great food, great tours, beautiful cities, awesome staff, beautiful and clean cabin. We enjoyed the Star singers and dancers; went to a few of their shows. We ate in the dining room most mornings and evenings but did have a couple if meals at the buffet and the pool grill and Mamsen's. It is a beautiful, comfortable ship. No issues w/ embarking/disembarking. Got from and to the airports safely and w/ plenty of time. We stayed in Venice two nites before embarking. Venice is a beautiful, friendly city. We stayed at the Hilton Molino Stucky on Guidecca and had a beautiful view of the main island of Venice. We had a wonderful meal at a small restaurant o Guidecca. We shopped in Murano, we bought masks at Ca' Macana, ate pizza, drank wine, had a gondola ride, walked everywhere. The vaporettos and water taxis are fun and safe. Not a cruise for children, but we did some late-20's people. It is really more for retired or almost-retired people; in their 50's and older. We will go again, probably September 2017, In the Wake of the Vikings. We also want to do. Portugal river cruise and another France cruise. Seriously, no complaints. We loved all of it! We met a couple our age on our first river cruise in 2011; we have done the others w/ them and will schedule our next cruise w/ them. You will meet wonderful, friendly people! Read Less

We chose this cruise, first of all, because we love Viking Cruises. When we learned of their new Ocean Itineraries, we decided to try a Mediterranean cruise, never having been to that part of Europe before. The Viking Star is a magnificent ship! There were so many excursion opportunities in each port that it was difficult to make a decision about which ones to do. The guides were excellent; the food was beyond delicious, well presented, perfectly served in all the various restaurants. Our stateroom was beyond what we expected: roomy, lovely, with all possible amenities. Our room steward was a delightful young woman who did all she could to make our stay enjoyable. We enjoyed the afternoon teas, the pool, the spa, the outdoor exercise equipment, evening entertainment. . This was our first cruise and first trip to Europe. Everything went off without a hitch. The flights (arranged by Viking) were excellent. We were greeted at the airport and shuttled to the Viking Star in Venice. Check-in was a breeze and then we were off to explore the ship. We ate most of our meals in the World Cafe although there were many other options available. The cabins are well designed and very comfortable. I loved having a coffee machine in the room. Our cabin attendant was off the charts good as were all the crew. With only one cruising day we really enjoyed waking up every morning in a new port. Viking provided a complementary excursion in each port and the opportunity to select from a number of upgrades. We upgraded about 50% of the time. A ship representative and a local tour guide escorted us on our excursions in most cases. The excursion that we picked in Venice spent too much time on the water tour with not enough time in Venice itself. Rome was (St Peter's Basilica) was my favorite. Barcelona was a close second. After you visit Monaco everyplace else looks dingy. After our shore excursion in Monaco we bought tickets for a double decker hop on/off tour bus. We went around 3 times. We were totally and emphatically satisfied and are totally sold on Viking. Every other guest that we encountered on this cruise had been on several (2-9) Viking River Cruises. This was an excellent cruise. It was more expensive for 10 days than I was used to, but the smaller number of passengers, more space, better food, free excursions, no waiting more than 5 minutes for anything, and low bill at the end (mostly just gratuities, well deserved) made it worth it. The ship was beautiful but not stuffy and the atmosphere and passengers were casual without being sloppy. The passengers (almost all North Americans) were great. The places we visited were all great, and a nice mixture of bigger cities and smaller cities. I hope Viking continues going to smaller places like Kotor (quite nice and easy to get to from the ship) and unknown places like Pula. I liked having at least a half day to see a little of the beginning and end cities, as a half day is better than just views of a city to and from airports like you get on many itineraries. I also like that Viking starts one place and ends up in another so you at least get to see some of 2 cities. The food was excellent - not too heavy on meat and potatoes but not too “froo-froo” either. Restaurants were quite nice with lots of tables for two. Even the buffet was quite good. Free beer and wine was nice. You can spend so much money on alcohol if you’re not careful. The service and cabin were excellent, especially large bed and roomy shower. Excursions, while not all day affairs, were fine for me. With so many cities in a row, I was glad I didn’t try to overdo things. The guides were excellent and the size of the groups was typical of cruises I’ve been on before. Because the basic excursions were included in the price, for the most part I took them, and probably saw and learned a lot more than if I had had to pay for excursions or wander around in the ports without a tour. There really was no nickel and diming, as Viking promised, and no pushing of things to buy like on other ships and no photographer. There were enough activities to keep me busy, but I could have used a few more sports activities. I wanted to play bocce ball but was told Viking was restricting play to times when the ship was in port because people below were hearing thumps. Several of us thought they should have at least given us a few hours a day (maybe late afternoon, especially when ship was at sea?) Why have a nice bocce ball setup you can’t use just because a few people are unhappy? The entertainment and music was good, although not necessarily your typical Broadway show tunes, and no magician or comedian, which I would have liked. But Viking said from the beginning they wouldn’t have those, so I can’t complain. I also would have liked a casino, but the lack of one turned out to be no big deal. The larger mainstream lines have a greater variety of music and entertainment but at least Star had some rock and roll and 60s music in their nightly shows for those folks who don’t like classical or opera. The Cruise Director was good (not too overly enthusiastic), and the Captain quite likable. (Of course, who could dislike a captain?) Overall I thought Viking did a terrific job and I'd love to cruise again. I can't afford the more expensive small ships, but now I think I'm spoiled for smaller ships, so I definitely won't be cruising on any ships larger or of lesser quality than Viking. Read Less

We were anxious to cruise on a brand new small ship and on initial voyage of this route from Venice to Istanbul. We had a very good time overall but realize that we are more in favor doing river cruises because of the lower number of passengers going into ports that are right in town. Although small ship cruising has only 930 passengers, it did not feel much smaller than a large ocean ship. Being the initial voyages for this ship, (Viking Star), there are still some things that not work as well as they should. Plastic vinyl covering on the doors of the shower had to be left on for an unknown reason. Computer glitches for breakfasts in a special dining area called "The Restaurant" were occurring daily. However this problem did not occur in the evening. There was also a day when the entire ship had some computer problems but the only inconvenience was not getting internet. A good chance to relax! Overall, Viking is very good and we are already booked on two upcoming river cruises. So we are happy with them. We had a great time on this cruise. Read Less

Just returned from a 15 day Viking Ocean tour, Empires of the Mediterranean. We took a 4 day pre cruise tour of Rome, Florence, Bologna and Verona and embarked from Venice. This is our second Viking tour, our first was a riverboat tour of China. Based on our outstanding experience with Viking tours in China, we had signed up for this cruise two years ago and were not disappointed. The new ocean ship, Viking Star is the first of a reported 10 being built. Though much smaller than other ocean cruisers, the smaller size allows access to other ports and cities. Many of the expected "hiccups" with a new ship that were previously reported had been resolved, and for the most part everything worked as advertised. Just a few points for any future travelers: 1. Okay to bring you own alcohol on board. We had packed several bottles in our checked luggage and was not sure about Viking's policy but no problem. 2. Having on board washer and dryers was wonderful. Three washers and dryers on each level and laundry soap is provided. 3. Wifi throughout the ship worked flawlessly with only occasional outage. 4. Would definitely recommend coming in a day earlier than embarkation, and there is no included tour for that city. We booked a separate city tour for Venice. Overall, great trip and experience. We went on this cruise, on the Viking Star with the credit we received after a flooded river cruise in 2013. We arrived in Venice 2 days prior to the cruise. The Hilton Molino Stucky hotel was beautiful, we enjoyed the roof top pool. We found it easy to get around Venice, the Viking shuttle boat was very helpful. Embarkation was well organized, the only glitch was that our key cards had the wrong names on them and that took a while to correct, but the staff was pleasant and co-operative when asked to help. The Viking Star is beautiful, the room spacious, we loved the king sized bed and balcony. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and the choices were nicely varied. We found the common areas of the ship to be too cold, I needed a sweater at dinner every night. The pool area was the one exception to this. We did enjoy the pool and it is just big enough to do laps, we did not try the infinity pool. Where we found this cruise lacking was in the excursions. We found that we went past most attractions and did not get a chance to go into them, this was most notable in Rome. We would have preferred the option to go to either the Coliseum or the Sistine Chapel. The guide on this tour did not speak English well enough for us to understand her. We did enjoy the free time that we had. On this tour one participant went back to retrieve an item he left at a restaurant. The tour guide showed him were to find the bus, but he did not find us. We waited 1 1/2 hours before returning to the ship (he had found his own way back) Viking needs a set procedure for dealing with missing participants, and a phone number that can be used in an emergency, the phone number on the key card rang busy, so the tour guide could not get through to the ship. The tours we enjoyed the most were the "on your own" ones, however the maps provided by Viking were very poor, we found we had to go to the local tour information booths to get better maps. We did find the free time we had at the ports, adequate to do some of the extra things we enjoy, we like to swim and we were able to swim in the sea at Dubrovnik, Corfu,Toulon and Barcelona, the Viking staff were helpful in assisting us to find appropriate swim locations. We found disembarkation was well organized and about as good as could be expected. We enjoyed our extra 2 days in Barcelona. The NH Calderone hotel was clean but the room was a little shabby and the roof top pool was too cold to do laps. The breakfast buffet was good and had a nice variety of foods, the Viking staff at the hotel was excellent and very helpful. Read Less

We have since been on Princess to Alaska, then we discovered Oceania which we have taken in the Mediterranean several times, the Baltic, Transatlantic and the Caribbean. Our most recent cruise was a return voyage with Silversea aboard the Silver Cloud this June to the Baltic again. While we loved the Baltic and found the service excellent as expected the Silver Cloud was a major disappointment and far below our expectations. Friends had talked us into going with them on the new Viking Star from Venice to Barcelona in early September and are we glad we accepted and made the trip. I had read an interview with the owner who said he was aiming at the Oceania & Azamara market and I thought to myself that is rather a tall order. Well I can tell you, mission accomplished! We loved the ship and had a wonderful 12 days all to places we had previously visited but we hated for the cruise to end. The only low mark I can give Viking was on the embarkation experience in Venice. First of all the walk from the cruise port entrance to the ship's terminal was a serious hike with a load of carry-on, there has to be a better way. Once in the ship's terminal the line was extremely long and there was no differentiation made according to your cabin status. We had booked an Explorer Suite but stood in line for at least a half hour, this was definitely poorly handled and needs to be addressed. That is absolutely the only criticism that can be leveled at Viking and the Star because from then on everything was absolutely beyond expectation. The ship was a wonderful size with beautiful public spaces and a crip sharp Norwegian decor that we found very attractive. The food was excellent and particularly the Italian restaurant, Manfredi's, was a good as it gets. We managed to eat there four nights and I think I got the mushroom soup and Osso Buco every time. The Restaurant was excellent as well but we all felt the Open Table Restaurant just missed the mark and after one try we did not return. The Open Table was meant to be a chef's selection of food and wine pairing that tried to get a little too avant- garde. Most other ships have the second specialty restaurant set up as a Steak House and Viking might consider that approach. The entertainment was most enjoyable, as the on-board group put on clever shows with excellent ability and the several visiting groups brought on board in Corfu and Naples were really excellent and provided for fun evening entertainment. The resident guitar player, piano player and classical trio were all over the ship and provided just the right touch at exactly the right time. The fitness center may well be the best we have seen on any ship we have ever been on. The decor and the facilities are quite simply, exceptional and once you get a look you will know what I mean. We do not normally take ship sponsored shore excursions, preferring to hire a local guide or explore on our own but since Viking included one complimentary excursion in each port there were several ports we opted to give it a try and they were very well done and quite enjoyable. We took the walking tour of Dubrovnik and Toulon with excellent guides and small groups of passengers and were glad we did. Disembarkation was easy and well handled, which was in stark contrast to the boarding procedure. We give the Viking Star high marks and an unqualified recommendation, in fact I think we would certainly take another Viking ocean cruise, they really got it right and we had a wonderful time on a beautiful ship. The crews was great! I think the walk to the bus was too long dragging our luggage on arrival at Venice airport. All tours of the various cities was excellent except Rome where the local tour guide was terrible. She could not be understood. I turned my "quite box" off because it was difficult to listen. The food was great. The itinerary was excellent. The ports were all I wanted to visit. The room service was very good except that the sign in the bathroom said to "put the towels on the floor when we want them change to save the environment". The towels were changed twice a day. I will recommend Viking Cruises to all my friends. This was our second experience with Viking. We plan to cruise the Rhine next. Read Less

This was our first cruise. Viking came highly recommended by friends of ours who we cruised with. As our first experience, I can say it was outstanding. The ship was beautiful and very well designed. Our room was lovely and every possible space was well thought out and used. The only suggestion I have with respect to the rooms was that the outlets were a little difficult to get to near the bed and an extension cord would have been helpful. The service and staff were remarkable, helpful and friendly. The food was plentiful and unexpectedly delicious. The travel to and from the embarkation ports went smoothly. The ship was kept extremely clean and the staff was constantly cleaning all common areas. The Port and shore excursions were uneven. Some were wonderful, some not so great. It all depended on the guide assigned to the excursion. Some were extremely knowledgeable and made the excursion come alive. Others not so good. Also, a few of our stops were a little disappointing, such as Corfu and especially Barcelona. We were really looking forward to seeing Barcelona, but it was a bus tour that didn't make any stops, except one short stop not in a very interesting area, and kept moving at a very fast pace so you really couldn't see or take pictures of the points of interest.
