We wanted to experience Viking's new ocean vessel which is the best experience ever. I am ready to go again on September 2017. Everything was impeccable and I do mean everything. Having a veranda is the best. We love viking and have done the river cruises as well which are excellent. We are sold on Viking Cruises. The staff is the best and we are always made to feel special. The excursions and choices are perfect and seamless with getting off the ship and to the buses. I've never experienced a cruise whereby the captain is visible and eating in the venues with the passengers. All other ships have one night dinner with the captain which is too formal for me. I love the choices of restaurants on Viking Star. The health club is state of the art too. I didn't miss a work out. We love the bathroom in the cabin which was also spacious and comfortable. The wonderful memories we'll treasure were a result of a wonderfully orchestrated itinerary. The tours & guides were all well informed. the Viking crew did a brilliant job guiding up to our buses for timely departures. Some stood out; Neils, our Rome tour guide, was brilliant focused & attentive. We learned more Roman history in a few hours than in school! The Oysters in Ston were amazing as was our tour guide. There were a few off moments, however the agenda is still new. Case in point, Corfu. We had a delightful experience once Panagia Paleokastritsa with the magnificent surroundings & meandering cats. The downside being the littered streets & vacated homes in rubbles; not the fault of Viking, it is just something that distracted from the experience. The ship was immaculate & the crew friendly, knowledgeable & attentive. The lounges & restaurants were lovely & comfortable as were the outside decks We stopped getting lost on day 14. (Ha, Ha) The master chef's gift of culinary arts was top shelf. Having had the opportunity to visit with him on shore, we found him to be a friendly & humble person. Hold on to him for sure. Our Restaurant waitress, Jeni was on top of her game; we looked forward to seeing her nightly. Our Bartenders/Baristas in the Explorer Lounge were so much fun; I ended up with two new cocktails options thanks to them. Entertainment was amazing giving everyone a different option for enjoyment. I absolutely loved the changing photo display at the top of the Living Room Lounge Staircase. The evening of the crew's & entertainers piano side appearance the best seated were at the movie star pillowed staircase. Here's a thought, I did not see a chapel or place to be quiet, pray or meditate. It would have been nice for those of us who are people of faith. Perhaps a small intimate area could be set aside for use by all faiths. Read Less

In 2014, we took the Grand European Odyssey river cruise, and loved all aspects of that adventure. We booked the 2015 Ocean Trip prior to going on the 2014 river trip. The ship was beautiful, generous in size in the public spaces, so even though there were 900+ guests, we never felt crowded. The only complaint was the temperature set for the Explorer Lounge, Wintergarden, and hall way to our cabin were too low. Given the outside air temperature and humidity, the extreme decrease in the Viking Star temperature caused us to be uncomfortable. We didn't feel we should have to wear extra layers when we came back on the ship. The food was great. A thumbs up to Zrinka, in the World Café, who made each mealtime special. Our cabin was very comfortable and we enjoyed the accommodations. Service by employees was excellent. They were quick to be accommodating with any request. The excursion to the monastery on Corfu, was not up to Viking Standards. It was a long, winding bus ride, with little opportunity to see any sights. We do compliment the Greek lunch we were treated to....it was terrific! In Napoli, our guide, Roberto, was so entertaining and knowledgeable about Pompeii. The day in Rome was not long enough. We think spending 2 days in Rome would help guests have the opportunity to see more of the fascinating sites. When we have the chance to see the famous structures from our world history books, we would have appreciated more time to savor each area. The Florence and Pisa excursions also needed two days. We would like to suggest Viking offering the chance to get tickets to go up in the tower in Pisa in advance. The limited time we were there didn't allow that to happen. We didn't know that in advance or possibly could have made some arrangements on our own. If we had been given more info regarding the time line, we would have been more aware of what to expect. Barcelona was a beautiful city. The hotel reservations in Venice were great. The Moline Stucky was a terrific place to stay. The Viking hostess advised us as to a good place to eat in Venice and it certainly was good advice. The hotel in Barcelona was awful! We were disappointed that in a city with that much character, we were staying in a building with no style, with dirty carpet in the hallways. Each day, we saw the same scraps of trash on the floor outside our room that never were vacuumed up. We walked the city streets while we were there, and saw many hotels with Spanish architecture and in buildings that looked quaint and historical. The hotel we were sent to was certainly not up to Viking Standards. We went to only two shows on the ship, but enjoyed both. The guitar player Valentino was terrific. Read Less

Default Viking Star from Venice on 4/20 We are not river cruisers, but had done many ocean cruises, mostly with Oceania and Regent. We chose this cruise for its new concepts, ports and the Viking reputation. Apart from the glitches and a few problems, the cruise was great. We have already booked the Midnight Sun cruise for 2017 (2016 has long been sold out). Pros. Great modern design, long hours in ports, good tours (some great) with good guides (some very good) at free or moderate prices. Very good dining (not as good as Oceania, but better than most). Very good and unique dining opportunities on board, in addition to the specialty restaurants. Manfrieds excellent. People do try to help--one of our tours was cancelled for lack of sufficient numbers; after complaining a private car and driver (no guide because did not need one) was arranged for only slightly higher cost. The WIFI was free and for us it worked very well (I use it a lot). The free wine was very good. Cons. Some of the service and cabin personnel needed more training. They tried hard and things got better, but there were issues since many of them had not worked at this level before. The TV had lots of problems, but did work at the end of the cruise--the system's design is terrific with lots of info, but it was too complex for starters. The specialty Chef's Table restaurant is really bad; it takes almost three hours and the food is strange--many empty tables. Not much was promised in the way of entertainment and that is what was delivered. The small shows in Torhaven were good. The lectures were just OK, and were not reshown on the TV. The Cruise Director is an excellent and experienced man, but you almost never heard or saw him; no TV show in the A.M. to greet the days events. I think the problems will disappear ant this will be an excellent cruise lin Read Less
