We chose this cruise because of it's itinerary. On the cruise, we could visit cities in five countries along the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. We were disappointed when we could not get into Koper, Slovenia and Viking did not offer any compensation. We did take the pre-cruise excursion in Tuscany and it might have been our favorite part. Beautiful villa accommodation and wonderful tours and dining in Florence, Siena and San Gimignano. Our third trip to Florence and we never tire of the beauty and history. Our time aboard the ship was very comfortable. Stateroom was comfortable and crew was very accommodating. We would prefer more entertainment in the evenings other than music in the bars. Other cruises have offered a variety of shows in the large theaters each night. Dining and service was exceptional. We made reservation in two alternative dining rooms and thoroughly enjoyed the small dining experience. We both like walking tours and mostly took these, they give you lots of free time to explore on your own. Viking's policy to not charge for beer, wine, speciality coffee, teas, etc is a welcome change from other cruise lines. Even tho we paid for it up front, I'm sure, did not have to deal with room key, etc to pay for any of these extras. We have taken three Viking Riverboat cruises and numerous other cruise line's ocean cruises. This was our first Viking Ocean cruise and were not disappointed in the ship or service. But we so enjoy riverboat cruises, probably will do those in the future. We did have one big glitch in our flight home, that involved missed flight, having to rebook in Zurich and while boarding in Chicago, were told we did not have a ticket. Our luggage was ticketed and boarding passes were issues all the way to Memphis, but we were not on the manifest. We had to purchase tickets at the gate. After filing claim with Trip Mate and having it denied, Viking did issue a full refund. We will travel with Viking again, but might be a little hesitant booking air with them. Read Less

Previous Viking cruise was great so we tried them again, and once again it was great. From Venice to Athens with stops in Split, Kotar, Dubrovhik and Corfu before reaching Athens. Included shore excursions were excellent and the optional ones were well worth the cost. The effeiciency of the crew in handling embarking and disembarking is top notch. The dining options are all excellent and the staff, service and food are worthy of a fine restaurant. The spa provides excellent service at a reasonable price. The entertainment options are so varied that we could not sample them all, but those we did were very entertaining. The enrichment lectures greatly add to the enjoyment of experiencing the different towns, cities and countries. The nightly Port Talks really help orient you for the following day, and if you miss one you can watch it on your room TV later that evening. The only thing I can add is that my wife and I have already booked Viking Cruises fro 2018 and 2019. Read Less

I had cruised the maiden voyage of the Viking Star in 2015 and was excited to sail on her again, with this Venice-Athens cruise. The ship is amazing, the crew is superb, the dining choices excellent, and guides are great. The Penthouse Veranda cabin is roomy and well-appointed. The ports and excursions are handled well, allowing time for exploring the wonders of the regions visited. Unbelievable sites from 700 BC were mind-boggling. We did the 4-day extension in Athens and are so glad we did. It enabled us to delve more deeply into all the historic sites in the area. Climbing to the Parthenon, traveling to explore the Peloponnese Peninsula, and going to Delphi to ascend to the Temple of Apollo were all memorable excursions. We had a free day in Athens and were able to use the Metro to travel to the Plaka District for some shopping. It was a seamless cruise and I would highly recommend Viking Ocean Cruises to anyone wishing to experience travel at it's best. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary: Overnight in Venice, ports in Croatia and Montenegro, a night to go out in Dubrovnik, and an overnight in Athens. But we were overwhelmed by the thoughtful staff annd the beauty of the ship. Guest Services will go out of their way to make you feel at home. Marc from the Chef's Table restaurant made my day every day with some kind of compliment. Every single person on the cruise was kind, friendly, and warm. The ship itself is understatedly chic and elegant. Many cozy areas to relax and not be bombarded with loud piped in music. Thoughtful elements such as the sliding doors on the buffet deck that allow outdoor dining wherever you happen to be sitting were noted and appreciated. The food is ridiculously good. Every night in the World Cafe featured huge king crab legs, sushi, sashimi, as well as chilled shrimp, and seafood salads. It was difficult to choose where to eat because everything was so good. The Chef's Table has a wonderful tasting menu and Manfredi's was a real treat. Again, every staff member in every restaurant was personable and their enthusiasm for Viking was infectious. The entertainment was interesting because what sounded a little hokey was actually wonderful due to the fact that the "troupe" was so so talented. Each night there was a different show featuring the same group of singers and dancers. It sounds redundant but every night they reinvented themselves and they were great. The classical duo and guitarist in the Atrium were also very talented and easy to listen to. The ports were all great-Venice is well... Venice. Beautiful walk at night from San Marco to Rialto to San Polo. Koper- Explore the colorful Istrian Peninsula and visit Isolde, Piran, and Trieste Zadar- Very pretty vacation spot, beautiful seawall. Take a boat out to see Kornati. Wish we could have stayed till sunset to hear the sea organ as sun was setting Kotor- Beautiful. Great excursion guide to Svet Stefan and Budva who clearly wanted us to love her country and she succeeded. We felt early ship departure from Kotor left us rushed and a couple more hours in Kotor would have been great. Corfu- only excursion we did not really enjoy Santorini - Oia!! Athens- awesome beautiful city. Find a place to sit and relax overlooking the Acropolis Read Less

Great new ship love the staff took great care of us great food Embarkation is the easiest I have ever experienced We chose this cruise because of the places this ship docks and the fact there is an included shore excursion in all ports The cabin was adequate, the bathroom was fantastic. My 6ft1" husband could stand up in the shower!! Plenty of storage space in the bathroom but not enough storage space in the cabin. The luggage fit under the bed. The closet was spacious with sufficient hangers. Entertainment is not an import criteria for us.We added a couple of optional excursions which were some of the highlights of our cruise. We had a guided tour of the Hermitage if St. Petersburg that was truly enlightening, our guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable. The food in all of the dining venues was delicious Manfredies and the Chefs table dining options were superior and there is no additional charges (reservations are required but seemed to be easily obtained). Service was friendly and excellent overall. The included shore excursions provided an overview of the cities that we visited.Complimentary mini bar in room- you can decide what type of soft drinks you want, replenished daily. Crew was fantastic= could not do enough for you. Would definitely sail with Viking Sea again! Read Less

We were on a Viking River cruise and enjoyed it so much we decided to try the Viking Ocean cruise. I was concerned over the large number of passengers (920, which apparently is considered small) but we did not overwhelm any port (although that may have had more to do with timing -- April). I know people who were on the larger ships and when 2 or 3 went into a port like Santorini at the same time they couldn't move without bumping into other tourists. The few ports where we couldn't tie up and had to take "liberty boats" into port went very smoothly. We never had to wait more than a few minutes for the next boat. Viking tries to get you to upgrade your cabin category by offering more reservations at their specialty restaurants but the buffet and pool restaurants were so good that we didn't even use all the reservations we had. The staff is very friendly and courteous. Viking adds a tip for the staff into your final bill but we liked our maid so much that we sought her out the last night to give her an additional tip. All the staff I talked to mentioned how much they liked working for Viking. At first I thought they were told to say that, but several told me how they first worked for such-and-such cruise line and were so happy they switched to Viking. Entertainment was offered but we did not attend any shows. The lectures before each port visit were very helpful. Wifi was available in the cabin but was very slow when we were underway. The shore excursions were interesting and well run. I was impressed at how quickly Viking can adapt to changing situations. While we were at sea a bomb went off in Istanbul. Viking decided not to run the advertised excursions in Istanbul so we went into the ancient city of Troy instead. The buses and guides showed up when we docked and we went to Troy as if that was our scheduled stop all along. (And I personally found it more interesting than Istanbul would have been anyway.) Viking offers an "all you can drink" package, but both the husband and wife have to sign up for it and drinks are available at lunch and dinner anyway. You'd both have to drink a lot to make it worthwhile -- do the math. Read Less

We had previously gone on 4 Viking river cruises. We knew this one would be special. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary--had to be special. We had recommendations from others that this cruise was unsurpassed. Great food and accommodations. The Viking Star is new and this being the 2nd year we felt most problems would have been worked out. I think that is true. The cabin was very spacious, but we had some problems with the bathroom and closet and drawers being in the same location. We kept bumping into each other. I had to move my things to other areas. There just are not enough hours in the day or personal energy to take in all the offerings onboard or on the tours. We were sleep-deprived when we arrived having flown from the West Coast of USA to Venice so we were slow starting with the entertainments. The ones we were able to include were great. The food/dining experience was the best. My husband is allergic to shellfish so that was a problem for him-there was a lot of shellfish on the menus. At least there was an alternative available. I was able to enjoy it though! The staff was always friendly and instantly helpful. The included tours could have been better. I was always on the wrong side of the bus, especially in Rome and Barcelona. We had two optional tours, Pompeii-Sorrento and The Vatican. They were good. Next time, we'll pay for more optional tours. We would love to do it again but we both LOVE the river cruises a bit more. Read Less

We liked the destinations. We Found everyone on the ship were excellent to deal with, the service was wonderful, especially in light of the fact that our luggage was lost by the airlines for 7 days! We were not too impressed with the food, I am gluten intolerant and for the choices of food were very limited. When I asked for gluten free pancakes for the next morning in the dining room, I was told how difficult it is to prepare gluten-free pancakes! I have never been on a cruise (we have cruised 11 times so far with Princess mostly but also 4 other lines) and have never had anyone tell me it was difficult to make something for me. The pancake, and there was only one, was not good at all, I was very disappointed in it. Also, it was out 50th anniversary on this cruise (April 16) and I had notified the cruise line ahead of time. We made reservations for dinner at the Italian Restaurant on the ship and told the head waiter also. When dinner was finished, nothing happened, we left the restaurant and nothing was said, all the while we had been told they had made a beautiful cake for us (gluten-free). I told the head waiter on the way out that I was very disappointed in them and that it was out anniversary and nothing was done. He came after us a few minutes later and asked us to return to the dining room where they proceeded to give us a very small gluten free chocolate cake, I would not call it beautiful at all, it tasted ok but again, I was very disappointed, no champaigne! Viking offered the best itinerary in a small cruise ship that offered high quality amenities. From the balcony of the cabin to the spa, our experience was excellent. We had the ability to take the included tour to acquaint ourselves with the ports of call, and then wander around amazingly historical areas on our own. The optional tours we chose were excellent, and we usually ended our day in the sauna followed by the snow room, where we met some wonderful fellow travelers. We tried the specialty restaurants for which you needed reservations and they were each a culinary experience. Even the reservation process was made easy. We could sit in our cabin and make any reservations that we wanted. When we were not at the specialty restaurants, we went to the dining room or the buffet. The service and the food were excellent. We took advantage of the educational talks, movies, and entertainment, and enjoyed them all, but I was most impressed by the scope and knowledge of the professors and professionals who spoke. Unfortunately, there was a bombing at our last port, Istanbul, 3 days before our scheduled arrival, and understandably the cruise line had to change the scheduled stop; however, they provided excellent options for excursions, and made the process, however disappointing, very easy. We had such an excellent experience that we booked a river cruise with another couple for this summer. Read Less

All ports of call were fabulous as was the ship. The cabins especially the bathrooms were a wonderful surprise with spaciousness. The food was varied and wonderful. The choice of dining experiences from informal buffet to cuisine with wine pairing options covered a wide variety of dining experiences. Tea time every day was an added bonus. The daily entertainment was superb and the briefings each evening on next day's port of call was so very helpful and enlightening. The staff was friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. A friend recommended the trip and a group of 10 friends went together. Eight of us departed from Tampa, Fl, and one couple left from Chicago, IL. We on our own did about 3 days in Venice before hand since the Viking pre-cruise was sold out and our pre trip was less expensive. No fault of Viking but a few days after we went thru Brussels airport (we all had different routes) the terrorists bombed the departure area and killed and wounded many. During the trip the tourist area where we were scheduled to visit in Istanbul for 2 days was bombed and Viking opted for caution and eliminated Istanbul from the itinerary. This was disappointing but all of us certainly understood and appreciated not going there. This of course colored the trip but again except for the Istanbul airport problem, Viking was not to blame. The embarkation was very good but the disembarkation was terrible. We were driven to the Istanbul airport and unceremoniously dropped off and we had no idea where to go. It was 4am and the airport was jammed with people. It would have been nice to have a staff person tell us how to get to the correct area. Perhaps the Turkish staff were irritated that we did not spend time or money in the city and provided a less than cordial goodbye. The ship itself was very nice, the staff attentiveness and accommodations were superb. The ports and shore excursions were fine. The tour guides were mixed. Some were fine, others were, although well informed, less enjoyable. I would not take the trip again because the area is so politically unstable and all the shore excursions were strenuous for someone over 70 years of age which included most of our group and certainly me. Viking cruise was recommended by family members who had traveled on Viking through China. Toured wonderful ports of Venice, Pula and Dubrovnik Croatia; Kator, Montenegro, Santorini and Athens, Greece; Kusadasi and Istanbul Turkey with provided tour guides. We enjoyed delicious food at all the variety of venues. We ate two outstanding meals at the Manfredi's restaurant; we still talk about the quality of the dishes and the superb service. The availability of coffee and capachinos throughout the day was enjoyed. We were spoiled with the attentive service by the room, bar, and restaurant staff. It was very nice to be able to dine in all restaurants without additional charges and to have open seating dinning hours. The common areas were all tastefully designed and decorated. We also went on a a 3 day post cruise tour in Turkey to Gallipoli and Troy that was well organized, and informative. Viking was very protective of the guests in departing from Istanbul. We always felt safe and well cared for. Read Less

We sailed with Viking on a river cruise and enjoyed it so much we decided to try an ocean cruise. This was my first time on a cruise ship and I enjoyed it very much. The ship was beautiful, very easy to navigate, wonderful details at every turn. Our cabin was near the front on the 4th deck. The room was very nice - comfortable bed, great amenities, spacious bathroom. I appreciated the ability to access our excursion schedule and account from our tv screen. The wifi was great - accessible from anywhere. The food was superb. We generally ate breakfast and lunch in the World Cafe as it offered something for everyone. The gelato was a special treat. Our meals in both specialty restaurants were quite good. Definitely try the Nutella Panna Cotta in Manfredi's. Service was wonderful throughout the ship. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Special kudos to our cabin steward, Dian, and Milica and Nenad in the main dining room. The excursions were very interesting and we saw and learned a great deal. Our planned stop in Istanbul was changed due to ongoing security issues so we went to Troy instead - a great tour that was a better option. My only complaint is the stop at the rug shop at the end of our tour to Ephesus. I didn't appreaciate the strong sales tactics and thought we should have been given the option to skip the shop. As Viking has changed its itinerary and is no longer going to Turkey this shouldn't be an issue for future passengers. We already have another ocean cruise booked with Viking and are preparing to add a third. I am very pleased with Viking's service and attention to its customers needs. Read Less

Having sailed on Viking's river cruises, it was time to experience their new ocean line. Embarkation was seamless, taking ten minutes to complete. The ship was well laid out with light filled open public spaces and a beautiful Scandinavian design. Onboard the ship was never crowded. The cabins were spacious and the bathroom was large with a great shower. We chose this cruise for it's destinations and Viking provide some great excursions. Highlights included Dubrovnik, Ephesus and Athens. Due to a terrorist incident we were not able to visit Istanbul, however Viking arranged for a stop at Troy on very short notice which was a great alternative. The decision to cancel Istanbul was in line with actions taken by most other tour companies. Service was uniformly attentive and friendly. The food was excellent across all venues with the specialty restaurant Manfredi's a highlight. The World cafe provided quick service with many cooked to order dishes and food quality was also excellent. The were many places on board for outside dining which was great during warm weather. Entertainment was organized on a smaller scale with a number of shows and acts which proved to be top notch. Lectures were also offered daily. High teas was provided daily in the Winter garden with nineteen types of teas, fresh baked scones and finger sandwiches. We had high expectations for this cruise and they were exceeded. We are now scheduled to sail on the newly launched Viking Sea in 2017 and look forward to that trip knowing it will be a great experience. Read Less

Sailed with Viking before & found their ships to always be excellent. It was a new ship & from all the literature, it appeared to be a first class ship. We weren't disappointed. Stateroom was very roomy & comfortable. All the restaurants were very well appointed with outstanding food. Common areas were very attractive. Shore excursions were excellent in content, places visited & quality of the guides. We've been on about 12 cruises & the Viking Star was the best ever. Also liked relatively low number of passengers. Only disappointment was that the ship failed to set its clocks ahead by one hour for Turkish daylight savings on Sunday, 27 March. This resulted in wakeup calls coming to the staterooms an hour late. We were also disappointed in not seeing Istanbul, but fully understood the reason. Croatia was probably our favorite stop, particularly, Dubrovnik, where we had the excursion of the cruise. My wife had a cyst which erupted while on board. The required several visits to sick bay where she received excellent treatment from a very professional and caring staff. This exceeded our expectations. Had an opportunity to meet the Captain who we found to be very "down to earth", polite and outgoing. The wait staff in every restaurant was top quality, extremely friendly, had a good sense of humor and provided excellent service. This was one our very best cruises ever and we'll be back to Viking again. About the only disappointment was that they just dropped us at the Istanbul Airport without any guidance of what to expect or how to proceed with check-in. Read Less

This ship was less than 1 year old and was in excellent condition. Even with fairly rough seas (15 foot swells), you could hardly notice due to the stabilizers. The food was excellent and the service, from almost all of the employees, was amazing. They did an excellent job at anticipating your needs and satisfying them. I also enjoyed being able to access most venues without having to wait in long lines. Our cabin was quite roomy and the veranda was truly appreciated. And having a coffee maker and hair drier was excellent! Also, having use of the laundry room without additional charges was appreciated. We utilized all of the restaurants and had top notch food in all venues. We would definitely use Viking again! Paying up front and not getting "dinged" for things like laundry, beer, wine, soda, excursions, was a great benefit. We flew into the Venice so did not board the ship until 4:30pm. If we had been told, either while waiting at the airport or when on the shuttle bus, the cruise lines had water shuttles go into the town of Venice, we would have been able to see the town. Since we did not have this information, I was not comfortable trying to get into town on our own. The shore excursions were amazing...all but one that we selected were included in the price of the cruise. And these lasted from 2 hours to 5 hours. What a great value! I only wished we had a bit more "shopping" time at each site. The local "tour guides" were very knowledgeable about the area, and shared valuable information including historical data and current world event situations. Read Less

My wife and I have always wanted to visit the Balkan region and we had traveled on Viking River Cruises before so we wanted to experience their Ocean/Sea itineraries and the larger vessels. The ship was magnificent! As far as cruise ships are concerned, we really liked the fact that Viking ships are smaller in comparison than other ocean type vessels. Only 930 passengers. Perfect for what we wanted. The smaller cruise ships lack some of the amenities of larger ships such as a casino and multiple theaters but this not distract from our trip at all. We embarked from Venice and visited Pula and Dubrovnik Croatia, Kotor Montenegro, Athens Greece, the greek island of Santorini and Ephesus Turkey. We were scheduled to spend a day in Istanbul but due to unfortunate terrorist activity in the city, Viking made a huge decision in changing our port of call from Istanbul to Canakkale Turkey. This change was made 1 1/2 days prior to our arrival in Istanbul. The logistics of making this change was overwhelming to me but Viking made it seamless in that on our arrival in Canakkale guides where in place and we toured the ancient ruins of Troy. Viking more than likely took a financial hit for making this change but the safety of their guests is obviously first and foremost. This was a wonderful trip not to be forgotten. Read Less

We chose this cruise because the ports were all places that we wanted to visit. Venice was a wonderful place to begin our Mediterranean adventure. We enjoyed a the old port and a gondola ride complete with a three quarter moon and music from the opera house! Croatia was most beautiful and surely interesting with the filming of "Game of Thrones" and the newest "Star Wars" movie. We loved Montenegro, Greece and Turkey. The excursions were planned to exhibit the most famous venues and capture the uniqueness of each city. Santorini was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. However, it would be difficult to say which port we enjoyed most. The beauty of the region is legendary, and we can attest that there was no exaggeration in the descriptions of its magnificence. The entire area is very lovely. The accommodations aboard the ship were excellent. Our cabin with its veranda offered us relaxation while enjoying the magnificent scenery. Dining was always pleasurable offering local fare as well as more traditional cuisine, well prepared and delicious. Nightly on-board entertainment was superb and made the cruise exceed our expectations. The service could not have been better. The on-board laundry was extremely handy, and we were able to travel with less luggage. Viking ships carry fewer passengers making excursions easier and boarding and reboarding is easier. We very much enjoyed the entire trip. We wish we could have toured the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque but I understand the decision to cancel the Istanbul tours. Read Less

Had a wonderful experience on a previous Viking River cruise which made us anxious to try their ocean experience. Really impressed by the proposed itinerary. The relatively small size of the ship allowed it to visit offbeat ports. Viking has corrected every problem a sophisticated traveler would have with cruising. There is no casino. There are no children under 12. There are no interior cabins. There are no silly street fair events or "adult" games. Except for the specialty restaurants (note no surcharge) no reservations are required for dinner. No matter what time you go you never ever have to eat dinner with a stranger unless you choose to. Many amenities are included: Internet; free wine and beer with lunch and dinner; and, a free tour in each port visited. The food was excellent and reflected each port we were visiting that day. Same with the "free" wine and beer offered. It did not come from a paper box. The decor was elegant but not over-the-top. The staff was amazingly helpful. I have cruised on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Celebrity. After experiencing sophistication of Viking I can never go back. Read Less

We wanted to see parts of the Med we had not seen before. The ship "Viking Star" was beautiful. Clean and well thought out. We loved our stateroom with the veranda and the large window. The bathroom was well thought out and very practical. The explorer lounge was our favorite. We felt like being in a lovely living room with libraries and a terrific view over the ocean. One day I took the coffee table book of all the art work on the ship and strolled through the ship. Excellent art work as well as the display of the Viking culture. Some of H.M Queen Sonja's and Edvard Munch's lithographs are on display. Just incredible. The food in all the Restaurant were to die for. The World Cafe was our favorite - so many dishes to choose from and every day was a different fare. Very special was the salmon and tuna at the raw bar. The Nordic Snack bar came in handy for a quick sandwich. The crew and the service folks were exceptional - Our request to see the bridge was fulfilled - the second officer gave us a great tour and answered all of our questions. There was no gambling, noisy shows or rude behavior throughout the cruise. Our shore excursions were well planed and the guides were very knowable. Unfortunately we could not tour Istanbul due to the terror attacks. We did see Troy and appreciate the quick change of the itinerary. We are looking forward to another cruise be it on the rivers or the oceans of this wold. Read Less

Heard so many wonderful things about Viking and the itinerary on this particular cruise was exactly what we are interested in. The ship and our cabin were luxurious! Dining a treat! Now we would like to experience a Viking river cruise in the near future so we are looking at their river cruise itineraries. The Viking Star is a smaller ship. I have sailed out of Port Canaveral several times on various cruise lines(I won't mention any names!) with larger ships. I enjoyed the smaller ship and smaller crowds. The ship itself is beautiful. Our cabin was quite comfortable and our steward, Michael, was a joy and took excellent care of us. I told him I didn't know how I would be able to take care of myself after the cruise! There are several offerings as far as dining. The Chef's Table is particularly fun with the different food and wine pairings. There is Manfredi's if you like Italian. And The Restaurant has just about everything else you could possibly want. We took in a few of the stage shows. The spa is lovely and we enjoyed that several times. I cannot say enough good about the meticulous detail Viking puts into itineraries. Informative programs about destinations are televised and can be accessed in your cabin. Guest speakers(professors, etc.) who have expertise about some of the destinations actually travel on board and give presentations. Maps of all ports are available. We had all local guides at the various destinations who add a personalized touch to what would otherwise be just factual information. We are personally interested in the cultural, historical aspects of the destinations so this cruise was a joy. Due to the unfortunate occurrence in Istanbul our itinerary was changed mid-cruise but I feel Viking did the best they could under the circumstance, and actually managed it quite well with little planning time. We had already decided to stay on a few days in Istanbul by ourselves so when Ancient Troy(bucket list!!!) was added we were thrilled, we knew we would be sailing right past it but had no idea we would get to stop and see it! I was concerned by the price of this cruise on the Viking Star, but when I experienced the service, ameneties, food, and the shore excursions I feel I had a bargain! Boarding was relaxed and extremely well controlled. It went so smooth. We were practically escorted to our cabin and our baggage was already in the cabin. The cabin was luxurious and very well laid out. The full size shower, the heated floor and the high end lotions etc. made it a superb bathroom. We went for a walk around to get acclimatized before too may people boarded, we didn't need to be concerned as all through the cruise there were never too many people anywhere. We were impressed by the many seating areas that looked like a sitting area you would find in your home. Elevators were numerous, quick, and quiet in operation. We tried all the dining selections and found them all to be superb, from the pool deck to the Explorer's deck to the main dining and the included specialty dining venues. Truly the best meals we have ever had on a cruise. Entertainment was unlike the regular cruise offering, it basically revolved around six main entertainers, two dancers, three piece band a pianist and a guitarist. Doesn't sound like much but they provided some of the finest entertainment I have experienced on any cruise. Not a cruise for families with kids, this is a grown up cruise. The included excursions were of the finest quality and it was impressive to see that, although we were often in port with other cruise ships, we were given priority at all attractions, no lines, taken to the best viewing areas, and treated like upper class. Overall Viking have taken the "River cruise experience" and presented an Ocean cruise that would be difficult to match and raised the standard expected by cruise lines in the future. Read Less

Amazing, First Class, Excellent, are not strong enough words to describe this adventure. The Viking Star- small, yet spacious. Decorated beautifully -the staff cleaning every inch of the ship showing pride in their work -all the while smiling and greeting passengers. The staff made you feel like family all the while treating you like royalty. Honestly, I can not say enought about the staff. Several said that they had received a promotion and would be joining the next ship to help with the new voyage. Even thought the rooms are a standard size, somehow it was layer out where it seemed to be use efficiently/ a bathroom that is large enough that a person could actually move- and then did I mention that the bathroom floor is heated - wonderful..... Excursions- most of the guides could have been college professors with the knowledge that they shared- once again taking pride in their jobs. Spa - was clean and well maintained. If there was an issue, staff was there to fix it immediately As for the food, I did hear several guests say that perhaps a few more "simple" American dishes would have been a nice change from the elegant and gourmet offerings that were supplied. Internet worked perfectly. I can name several ships that should take lessons from Viking on not nickel and diming a Customer- Yes, there were a few problems -but, they were addressed quickly and efficiently The question has been asked "would you do this trip again- my answer --- YES! Happy with their river cruises, had always wanted to try Viking Ocean - was very impressed with the Ocean Cruises Presentation in Los Angeles, found Viking to have really done their homework! They knew the market, our likes, dislikes preferences etc, so we were anxious to give it a try. Loved all inclusive plan, size of and amenities of cabin, choices of restaurants, interesting itineries, tours and value. The ship is beautiful, cabin very comfortable, staff outstanding, food just marvelous - would definately recommend and cruise again with Viking. Would like to have a few more sea days so we could enjoy lore of what the ship has to offer and play some team games - such as team trivia! Shore excursions were average, would suggest every tour used VOX (wireless sound) as some guests were loud and caused us to miss some of the info we hoped to learn. The optional tour we took to Herculaneum was absolutely wonderful! Great guide, excellent pace, interesting history (super pictures too.) Entertainment on board was good. Very talented group, made good use of latest technology for some unusual graphic backgrounds (sets). Some to a fault! Dining was superb, great wait and dining room management staff, delightful and delicious meal selections. Especially liked the World Cafe...informal, always inviting, wide selection of foods. Only ... the coffee, wonderful when brewed and served by waiters. The automatic brewing machines did not satisfy our taste buds. Great gelato!! Wine flowed with all but breakfast meal, enjoy! Fyi...we are at brussels airport in the brussels airways lounge...absolutely wonderful to hang out here. we are 6 hours ahead of est. brussels airlines has a wonderful "loft" lounge for gold alliance members to enjoy. Located on the 3rd level of terminal a, it was a gem...but hard to find. With a 2 hr. Layover, it proved a lovely experience. Clean, well equipped, wonderful selection of food and beverages, we happily took advantage of the “gold” star alliance perk. Flight arrived at venice airport on time, no jet way, had to carry hand luggage from plane to terminal. (difficult for some) getting to the ship from the airport was easy, viking people everywhere you turned, impossible to get lost. Dropped off checked luggage with porters, then about a 5 minute walk to the bus. Weather is perfect, overcast, about 50. Boarded bus with about 30 others then off to the star... About a 20 minute ride. Registration and check in was excellent. Process quick, took about 5 minutes, pass thru security, then elevator to deck 2 on the star. looking around... We appear to be the “older guests” on this trip. I am 75, my wife will be 70 next week. Champaign greeting, our cabin was ready so we dropped off our hand carry, put some away then went to the world cafe for a lovely and delicious lunch. then a nap! Tight on time, still getting to know what's where on the ship and where best to eat dinner, we decide to go to world cafe on deck 7 as we have the opera event tonight - at 7:30. a quick meal...absolutely delicious!! Turkey, filet minion, pasta and everything appropriate for thanksgiving dinner (buffet) was the for all to enjoy. Bus to water shuttle then a 40 minute walk (in the dark) over 5 bridges and finally to the venue (zeno palace). Mr. Zeno (16th century palace still in the family) occupy the palace. He was there to greet us before the performance with stories about the family. If you’re doing this, do bring a flashlight and watch for steps on the bridges... Two persons fell with surface transitions from ramp to steps. a local opera company of talented singers, a pianist and violinist treated us to a 2 hour selection of classical music and famous italian melodies. (wines and beverages were served) as much as we were tired, the optional "evening and sights of classical venice" was well worth the price and time. the walk back seemed to take less time, then the water shuttle, bus and security at the terminal and we were "home". Still struggling to figure out how to work the fancy coffee maker in the cabin, mdw took our mugs to deck 7 and made tea and coffee for our late night drinks. viking needs to re-think the coffee maker and it’s shelf placement (in those cabins that include the machine). It’s near impossible to use and reach and the “regular” coffee is far from the delicious brew served by room service and on the breakfast tables. Clock set for 7am. Tour of venice (in daylight) scheduled for the 27th...more about that later! Need a rest! Venice day 2 – Nov 27th Another absolutely beautiful day! Sun is shining, temperature about 50. Breakfast in the world cafe - diane had set the alarm incorrectly so we were running a bit late (or so we thought). omelets to order, i had my usual, salmon with a bagel. Diane arrived a few minutes later and had her one over easy, on corned beef hash, just as she likes. Coffee served by waiter is great, however, from the machines, it’s like mud. We rushed back to the cabin for jackets, camera etc. Found our room attendants tutu and faz just finishing up then back to deck 2 to disembark for the 4 hr. Included tour of venice only then to find that our tour number time had been revised. We had an hour - so we walked the ship to see where the different shops and dining rooms on deck 2 were and look at the menus. Ship communication – needs work. Announcements about tour times and gangway locations need repeating and it would be very helpful if posted daily at or on each of the electronic displays next to the elevators. 9:50 we were off the ship, thru the terminal and to the shuttle bus. Shuttle bus.. Much too crowded, the next stop, the water shuttle and an hour water tour of the venice lagoon (using vox sound transmitters.) pleasant ride, good pictures and historical info. Pointed out were the many islands (of the 400 bridges and 118 islands) along this route and places of interest we would see during our walking tour later. Places like st. Marks basilica and square, the doge's palace etc. The streets were very crowded with tourists, two ships in port and the beautiful day, plus the high tide and the sidewalks (with raised platforms for high water) only added to the congestion. Trying to listen to our guide as other languages were being broadcast by guides with amplifiers made it like being at the tower of babble. Picture taking was again ideal with the clear day. two stories learned thus far... The body of st. Mark was smuggled from his burial place in alexandria egypt, and reinterred in the basilica here to declare him the patron st. Of venice. also the vivaldi (composer) had been a priest at the church of vivaldi's of la pieta. We walked back to the water shuttle on our own shopped for souvenirs, then at 12:30 departed, returned to the ship, freshened up, then had a delightful lunch in world cafe - probably would have loved to try the lunch specialties in the pool cafe, however, the smell of freshly varnished surfaces made it impossible to sit in that area. Perhaps we’ll try tomorrow. Next, the muster station drill... Not happy with the new life jacket policy...we are still waiting for the promised 2 life jackets in the cabin. (never did deliver them) met guests elaine and vj. then a nap and 6:15 dinner in "the restaurant" where we shard a table with john, mary, hayne & jan... Our waiter was angelo with whom we sailed on viking prestige ... His service ... Outstanding as expected. Wine flowed freely, all had the boston lettuce salad, diane made a dinner entree from 2 crab cake appetizers, i had the ny strip steak, one person had whole lobster, another the lasagna and hayne had the beef wellington. Deserts ranged from gelato, to ny cheesecake. Everything was outstanding! Back to the cabin ... Tomorrow, split croatia... Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2015 02:39:49 -0500 Hello friends & family...having a wonderful time, weather has been ideal, looks to be in the 60's today for our naples tour. Just that we have been too busy to write and i have been fighting off a cold... Subject: Naples - Herculaneum - From Dec 2 Herculaneum ... Described as "the other pompeii" or as our guide carmine described it, hollywood ... It was the summer resort where many "upper class” came to enjoy the seafront town. located at the base of mt. Vesuvius it was destroyed by the eruption of 79ad, not by fire but by mud. The town remained buried for 1,600 years and is today, a unesco world heritage site. carmine pointed out the many homes, beautiful mosaics, colorful fresco's, many structures still intact with beds, roofs, doors (petrified wood) some sliding pocket doors still operational, pictures capture many of the beautifully preserved artifacts. Hygiene practices were outstanding. Importance of available clean water, sewers, toilets and baths was obvious here even in this ancient city. the site is funded in part by the hp foundation. many steps, uneven stone streets, high curbs make for difficult walking, no handrails along steps. No places to sit or rest during the tour, lavatories are free. Many tourists still made the journey with canes in hand! worth the price and effort. back to the comfortable coach for the ride back to the ship. Lunch in the world cafe.. With wine! Date: Thu, 3 Dec 2015 17:27:26 -0500 Subject: Rome Learned last night about the horrific shooting in san bernardino - 14 dead, 17 wounded... Will this never end?? will try to catch up over the next few days, however, today was another spectacular day. breakfast in the world cafe, omelets to order, diane had her usual eggs with corned beef hash. early bus for our tour of rome and the vatican. Bus 11, with guide roberta, just steps from the ship, we were on our way promptly at 8:15 for the 80km hour and 15 minute ride to vatican city. temperature reached mid 70's today, sunny. security everywhere, just didn't seem any more that one would expect at tourist sites like those we are at. spent some time discussing the styles of architecture, ruins being discovered as new building foundations are excavated. We passed the colosseum, many renaissance fountains and unique blend of ancient and modern. we used the hour of free time to wander onto the vatican city piazza to marvel of its size and incredible beauty. took loads of pictures to share... Then back on the bus, for the ride back to the viking star. I snoozed a little. back at 2:30 we had a light late lunch at the pool grill. nap time... 6:30 our reservations at manfredi's (specialty italian). wow, definitely the best meal we have ever had on any ship! This was our 70th cruise! started with mushroom soup, then we each had the veal scaloppini (diane marsala, i the lemon sauce) veal is from from colorado. we also shared a shrimp scampi with pasta as a side dish. desert, pistachio cake, ricotta cheese cake, coffee. absolutely the best, great food & service! Every bit a gourmet meal! Date: Fri, 4 Dec 2015 01:48:26 -0500 Subject: Day 9 - Florence/Pisa It's 7:30 am as i write this, still dark, sunrise due in about 10 minutes. Plan to take the included tour (4 hrs) of tuscany to pisa. ship due to arrive at 9, our tour begins at 9:30. hoping that today continues as lovely as each of the previous 8, with comfortable temperatures, bright sunshine, good tour guides and interesting new information. I'm finally feeling about 90% better, been taking meds plus amoxicillin ... Seems to be working. Many other guests coughing and sneezing... Appears the ship is taking steps to control handling of utensils and handling of items such as salt, pepper etc. First day that the sun was not shining bright. Cool, about 50. Rain held off for the tour - just a light sprinkle as we were returning from the 3.5 hr tour. following breakfast, we departed from the port by bus (nice coach) on #20. Our guide was yvonne, who gave us an excellent overview of the areas during a brief 20 minute ride to the town of pisa. Once there, "tony" as she asked be called, spent the next hour with us as we visited the tourist sites. the leaning tower is visible from many points on the road as we make the drive to the town. pisa cathedral, baptistery and leaning tower! think we were able to capture some nice photos of the many interesting and ancient places. Security here is tight. All visitors are permitted into the tower but only after a metal detector wanding and backpack inspection. There are more military and police personnel here than at any of the other locations we have been. Good tour, about 45 minutes of walking, flat surfaces, no hills or steep grades. Back to the ship, delicious shrimp with pasta lunch, glass of wine... Then to nap. great dinner more later - must rush off... Subject: Monaco Dec 5th --Raining , 50 degrees this morning .... Soon after breakfast we were ready for our included walking tour of monaco. We followed our guide paula as she took us thru the terminal, parking garage and then thru several escalator and elevator sections to arrive in daylight in front of the oceanographic museum. See photos of jacques cousteau submarine on display. From there we meandered thru absolutely gorgeous palace gardens with magnificent views of the harbor, distant french hills and several interesting monuments. The gardens were still green, many of the flowers still in bloom, the scene is captured in a few of the photos should you care to see the link. Arriving in time to see the changing of the guard at the palace entrance just as the already weather related abbreviated event started, the rain went from light drizzle to heavy downfall. Interesting - the "citizens" of monaco do not pay taxes. There are about 6,000 of them. In order to become a citizen, one must be third generation, both parents of each generation must have been citizens. Hey... Even cars must meet minimum requirements to enter! Visited the st. Nicholas cathedral where prince rainier iii and princess grace were married and are now interred. Our guide gave us the latest local gossip on the grimaldi family. Security again, hardly noticeable. The walk back to the ship seemed to take less time. Drenched, we changed clothes, hung everything in the bathroom to dry (hopefully) ... Then to lunch! Date: Mon, 7 Dec 2015 08:42:27 -0500 Subject: Toulon France Toulon france included a 3 hr tour... 1hr boat ride followed by a walking tour. Most of the royal french naval ships normally in the harbor were out... Either in the mid east (on duty) or at a demonstration. The condensate on the boat windows and the chatter of guests made the brief far from informative. The walking tour was better. The Old town suffered severe damage during the war, especially since Toulon was the French Naval port With much of the "old city" streets under reconstruction and some of the buildings leaning dangerously. It's sunday, thus nearly all of the stores are closed. Passed by the street market place as we walked back to the ship, hundreds of vendor stalls selling all kinds of food, from fresh fish to fresh fruits... It's about 1pm so they are packing up what's left. Guide was sure to take us past the stadium - holds 15,000 and soon to be enlarged. Back to the ship to dry out and get a warm tea! Dinner tonight with hayne and jan at manfredi's. Another delicious meal, service by angelo, rudi and arthur ... Made for a perfect ending to a lovely cruise experience with viking. Tomorrow, 4:30 am wake up for the flights home to nj. Viking again took us to the airport and watched over us as we checked in to be sure we were on our way without any difficulties. My wife and i (both platinum premier 1k with united) took advantage of the associated privileges making for expedited check-in, lounge access and pre boarding. Paid extra for the lufthansa seats with more leg room. Well worth the 100.00 each! Both flights uneventful, food fair to poor, service excellent. Upon arrival in newark, we participate in the us gov. Goes program, again, bypassing the crowds upon arrival at customs and immigration. Some observations: Viking ocean reminds us more of viking river cruising .. In that the daily tours make for in depth and interesting learning experiences about each of the itinerates. We missed the daily on-board activities such as trivia... Viking ocean did have it only the one sea day ... And it was very well attended! The ship is absolutely gorgeous and the attention to detail just incredible! Guest laundry rooms on each deck, (no charge, & soap included). TV – large screen, good channels, Great “Ted” series and lectures (Movies also included) Love the wi-fi not the fastest, but quite dependable... And too, it’s included! Large showers enclosures, heated bathroom floor, great night lighting, balcony has both drapes and sheers, temperature in cabin wonderfully controlled, plenty of cabinets, self closing drawers and closet space (and lighting), comfortable beds! Entertainment always tasteful, shows nicely performed, talented musicians and singers. Only minor observations: 1. Prefer life jackets to be in cabin (not at muster stations) 2. Make more “fuss” over explorer members (loyalty club) ... (perhaps a concierge room like rccl) bring back the explorer pins!! 3. Answer phones to Explorer desk (often never answered) 4. Overhead lighting in lavatory much too harsh, nice if could be dimmed. 5. Provide flash lights for evening walks. 6. Surprised to learn of a 22% tax on duty free purchases made onboard ship.
