Food was ever better than previous HAL cruises and we have done many (almost 5 star). Service was excellent and as delightful as ever. I understand that sometimes the 'open dining tables had slower than usual service, but during the set dining the service was excellent. The Oosterdam has been partly reno'ed (I understand the suites, although we did not stay in one), the Lido was super and so were the many lounges and bars: all new furniture and fixtures. The cabins all now have wall-mounted flat screen tv's and the range of free movies, news, music, etc. was very good. Lido hours extended which was nice when returning from shore for a late lunch. A new addition which was a GREAT hit, was the new salad bar and they serve you in very large salad bowls with an amazing array of choices. What many cruisers don't know, but we do, if there is something that you fancy that is not being served, you can order it and they will make it specially for you. We found the entertainment good to very good and very varied. We have never liked and including this cruise, the shows with the singers and dancers. They are far too loud and we dislike the high-pitched female singers in particular. I did ask for the pre-show music to be turned down and they finally did that. Yes, the crowd is older on HAL but with or without hearing aids, the music doe NOT have to be deafening. My only only negative comment would be the choice of music. When reading unstairs in the Crow's Nest and where the reading room is now located adjacent to the Explorers Cafe, the music is annoying. Sometimes the young 'teckkies' see to think that cruisers enjoy rap music, but I can assure you most do not. Read Less

Love HAL, it is my favorite cruise line! This is my third or fourth time on this particular ship and have nothing bad to say about it except the crappy room location we got on a VA guarantee cabin. The french fries at the Dive In are the best on land or water. I went with a friend on this cruise but she doesn't like to eat with people so I ate in the dining room alone. I met lots of great people and the food was good for the most part. I ate at the Pinnacle Grill for lunch once and that was delicious. Always had time to stop at the ice cream "parlor" for an afternoon ice cream. The movies on demand in the room are plentiful and varied so you can always find something to your liking. This was my third Mediterranean cruise and the first time going to a lot of ports west of Italy and that was interesting. I booked this cruise late in the year because the last time I went in August it was 100 degrees every day (all 24 days either in Italy or east of Italy) and that was no fun. This time the second 12 days of the cruise were west of Italy and they were sometimes cold and rainy so it didn't much feel like vacation but hey, you can't tell mother nature what she should do. We chose this cruise because of the remarkable itinerary. Even though Kusadasi had to be canceled by HAL due to political unrest in Turkey, the substitution of visits to Rhodes (fine) and Albania (disappointing) was no hardship. Port excursions provided memories not to be forgotten and a host of photogenic opportunities. The cabin stewards were fantastic and, in general, the crew were very helpful and pleasant. After a half-dozen cruises on HAL, we felt that the cuisine and entertainment were only mediocre on the Oosterdam. The veranda cabin experience, however, proved to be a nightmare during the last two weeks. The ship's hotel director and security were grossly ineffective in curbing the noise and partying in the adjacent cabin from about 11:00pm to 4:00am despite our complaints. The 5-star itinerary, 3-star cuisine and entertainment, and zero-star cabin experience warrant no more than an overall three stars. We have decided to return to cruises with Celebrity. Read Less

Nothing really negative to say about this cruise. We got on and off without any problems, the cabin was was great and the service thruout the ship was the best. We toured each and every port and had a great time in each. The only thing we found not to our liking was the Food. This was our 31st cruise and I would say the selection and quality of the food was poor. We ate more food in ports then ever before, the meat and pork on the ship were overcooked. One night they had brisket that was like shoe leather. By the way the BB King band was the Best!!!! New policy -No Smoking in the Casino-Saved me a lot of money cause my wife wouldn't gamble .Be advised that as the fleet goes in for updates(which were good) there will be a no smoking policy enforced in those casinos. Last fall we were on the Niew Amsterdam and the food was to die for, maybe they should hire their cooks Read Less

12-day cruise was a bit long. The cruise ship is tired and we had a lot of problems in our Balcony stateroom that were not corrected during our cruise despite our many requests to the front desk. Front desk staff generally inexperienced, frazzled and disinterested for the most part. Our toilet got clogged everyday with the most minimal amount of toilet paper and they would come by with a plunger. Their toilets on this ship need to be completely overhauled. Sofabed in the room would not close completely so we could not use the sofa. This cruise would not honor rewards earned via Holland America Barclay's Bank VISA, so don't bother getting that card. After showing award documentation to the front desk for days, they finally honored the Drink Cards as they made us buy the $65.00 drink cards in lieu of the $50.00 rewards cards (guess they weren't making enough money). The coffee machine in the Explorations Cafe was broken almost every day, so our coffee cards were useless. Finally got a partial refund. Shore excursions were great for the most part. We missed a couple of our 5:45PM fixed dinner seatings and they gave us a hard time to get another seating that evening. We were told to go to the LIDO cafeteria, which was always crowded with long lines and marginal quality food. The balcony was recently painted and there were paint splatters all over the furniture and glass doors. Obviously there is no attention to detail for this alleged 'premium cruise line'. The Pinnacle Grill was great and well worth the $20.00 per person charge. Our last cruise was a cheap 4-day cruise to Mexico on the Carnival Paradise, and it was a lot better overall. We signed up for the unlimited laundry, and they gave us a bag that was the size of a large ziplock baggie. Couldn't get hardlyl anything in there. Nickel and diming on everything! I went to the bar to get a drink and asked for Jim Beam, was rudely told I needed to pay an extra fifty cents. What a joke. The cruise director spent the last day's exit presentation making fun of questions that were posed by guests that he felt were rediculous and spent a lot of time talking about tipping and how the various service groups got their cuts. I thought this was classless. Balcony cabin 5155 was tiny and felt crowded. Lido cafeteria smelled dirty and was always crowded. They shut down at around 10PM, so don't bother trying to get a late nite snack. Read Less
