While I usually choose a balcony cabin, this outside stateroom was very comfortable and pleasant. This particular ship doesn’t have very many balcony cabins, so I couldn’t justify paying twice the price. There was plenty of light and I enjoyed looking out the large window in the morning to see where we were. If I saw land, I went up to deck with my binoculars to watch sunrise or docking. There was plenty of closet and storage space and plenty of hangers. My niece and I had twin beds, and we both thought they were quite comfortable. We rarely watched the small TV, and it was well placed and adequate.
Just after we moved in, I smelled cigarette smoke in the cabin, and called the front desk to report it. They immediately sent someone to the room, and did a deep clean. They also brought in a machine which cleaned the air. It seemed to work, and management followed up later that day. They followed up again on a subsequent day, which I appreciated. I was on the 4th Floor/A Deck, which is the lowest floor of staterooms, and there were several times when walking down the hallway, I detected a foul odor or cigarette smoke, especially when walking by the doorway to the 3rd floor (crew/maintenance areas). I do have an extremely keen sense of smell, but as long as I could sleep without odors, I didn’t mind too much. I felt that the crew addressed my concerns appropriately and I was satisfied.
Initially, we were assigned Cabin 302, which was advertised as a partially obstructed view on the 6th floor. My Holland America rep called me two weeks before embarking and offered me an upgrade at no charge, which I accepted. Out of curiosity, I walked by Cabin 302, which is on the Promenade Deck. It looked as if I would have had a peek-a-boo view of the water, but the window was about 10 feet back from the edge of the deck, and people often walked by the window (tinted glass.). Our window was on the outside, right over the water, which was much better, and more private. The upgrade was definitely worth it, and I was grateful to receive it. Read Less
