While I usually choose a balcony cabin, this outside stateroom was very comfortable and pleasant. This particular ship doesn’t have very many balcony cabins, so I couldn’t justify paying twice the price. There was plenty of light and I enjoyed looking out the large window in the morning to see where we were. If I saw land, I went up to deck with my binoculars to watch sunrise or docking. There was plenty of closet and storage space and plenty of hangers. My niece and I had twin beds, and we both thought they were quite comfortable. We rarely watched the small TV, and it was well placed and adequate. Just after we moved in, I smelled cigarette smoke in the cabin, and called the front desk to report it. They immediately sent someone to the room, and did a deep clean. They also brought in a machine which cleaned the air. It seemed to work, and management followed up later that day. They followed up again on a subsequent day, which I appreciated. I was on the 4th Floor/A Deck, which is the lowest floor of staterooms, and there were several times when walking down the hallway, I detected a foul odor or cigarette smoke, especially when walking by the doorway to the 3rd floor (crew/maintenance areas). I do have an extremely keen sense of smell, but as long as I could sleep without odors, I didn’t mind too much. I felt that the crew addressed my concerns appropriately and I was satisfied. Initially, we were assigned Cabin 302, which was advertised as a partially obstructed view on the 6th floor. My Holland America rep called me two weeks before embarking and offered me an upgrade at no charge, which I accepted. Out of curiosity, I walked by Cabin 302, which is on the Promenade Deck. It looked as if I would have had a peek-a-boo view of the water, but the window was about 10 feet back from the edge of the deck, and people often walked by the window (tinted glass.). Our window was on the outside, right over the water, which was much better, and more private. The upgrade was definitely worth it, and I was grateful to receive it. Read Less

I don’t remember the room number or exact category. It was an outside. The toilet had a black ring around it that looked like dirt or mold, but was just old age, I think. The tub had black marks that were not dirt, just chips. You operate the tub plug by turning the cover for the overflow. Tucked inside the excursion catalogue on the desk, there are USEFUL maps of all the ports, not those silly maps that just show the ship at some unknown location next to a Diamonds International. A nice touch. There are more drawers and closets than you could use, about twice what the newer ships offer. Drawers under beds, too. No fridge, but they actually fill the ice buckets, so useful for carrying really cold water ashore in hot ports. A tiny, blurry tv, but they replaced it with a tiny brand new one. You can order videos (free) to watch on the DVD. Bring a clothes pin to keep curtains closed if you like to sleep past dawn. There is no nightlight. Put a bathmat along the crack at the bottom of the door if you like to sleep in the dark. The bathroom door has the nice magnetic catch to keep it open at night and there is a clothes line in the tub. All very functional. Read Less

No noise from other areas, except the occasional noise of closing doors of the staffs work room across the hall from us. Very minor! No noise from below or above. Our room staff was awesome. Very friendly. Eddie even called us by our names. If we need anything we got it within 10 minutes of asking. Our rooms were straightened up by the cabin staff twice a day. Read Less
