We were looking forward to a great vacation, but: During the first three days we had no hot water in our room and had to shower in ice water. On day four the problem was repaired by a local plumber, why did it take so long? The reception desk could care less that we and others had no hot water. The front desk said that she is not getting paid enough to worry about the passengers. Why is she there and at that position. The elevator did not work during the entire cruise. Most passengers were elderly (nursing home type) with various medical issues. Some were unable to get around the boat, some required assistance by other passengers. A few fell down the steps and required medical attention. The front office did not assist them in any form; they don't care. During the entire trip we never had a French meal, it was cheap American kitchen. On Captain night only the first 76 passengers (out off 168) had lobster; why? The wine served with dinner was the best wine under $2 one can find; it was not as good as Trader Joe's. We called the Boston office from the boat to report the problems; as on the boat, no one cared in the home office. That much for traveling with Vantage, the tour company from hell. Read Less

After a horrid experience on the Discovery II we were frankly more of a mind to simply go home than to continue onto the next ship on our trip, The River Venture. Vantage showed good judgment in chartering buses for travel between ships after recent events in France and the trip went smoothly. Simply put our experience on the Venture was comparable to prior Vantage experiences and helped ease the frustration of the first half of the trip. Our first thought was that the ship was spotless, the first briefing both interesting and extremely detailed with all necessary information. The hotel manager, Restaurant manager and a server all greeted us happily from earlier travel on the River Splendor. Both the food and service were solid with the Restaurant Manager running an efficient and engaging staff and pitching in himself where necessary. Our server team was superb and engaged us in friendly conversation throughout the trip. Imagine our surprise to find a cabin that had both the promised tv system and unlimited hot water. Cruise director Anna Maria proved a master at executing in face of surprises like a labor stoppage. She was solid and served as a solid role model for a new colleague. The hotel staff was friendly and efficient even to the point of collecting boarding passes at the gangplank a novel and effective new service. The onboard entertainment was fun even though I was a draftee during the dance show. It was among the best we have encountered on a cruise. In short after a horrid experience on the first half of our trip, this ship and its crew have convinced us to give Vantage another shot. I would urge you to watch this staff and learn from them but keep them intact as a team. They did you proud. Read Less
