Second HAL Alaska cruise not as good as our first

Review for a Alaska Cruise on Westerdam

In 2015, we did our first Alaska trip, which was an HAL Land/Sea Tour, where we did a land based tour of the Yukon first, and then did a short (4 night) cruise on the Volendam to finish off our tour. This week long cruise on the Westerdam, from Vancouver to Anchorage, paled in comparison to that experience, for a number of reasons. On this trip, my husband and I also brought along my mother in ...

Our most disappointing HAL cruise

This was an extended family cruise+land tour of Alaska. My parents were celebrating their 60th anniversary and said the only place they had ever been that they wanted to return to was Alaska. Because we have all had great experiences with HAL in the past and my mom describes them as the "most elegant" and luxurious cruise she's taken, we only focused on them for our planning. Our group ranged ...

Nice ship, average food

We chose the Westerdam for the itinerary from Vancouver to Alaska and Denali addition. The ship was very nice, many small bars or sitting areas for when weather was cool. However we had great weather all but one day! Enjoyed BB King Blues bar the most - we prefer blues music anyway and enjoyed the band every night. The Billboard lounge has the “dueling pianos” and they were okay. Did not care ...

Ship is ‘tired’

Was part of a package with a well known travel group. First, the HAL employees are wonderful and eager to please. The amenities, however, are very average compared to other ships. Wallpaper yellowing and peeling off the walls in common areas, bath tub coating coming off, plumber had to be called at one point because of a problem with the shower, card room not set up with tables when event was ...

For perspective, we have cruised over 50 times starting in 1981 and are now in our mid 60’s. We are 4 star mariners with HAL and Elite with Princess. We have also cruised with celebrity, crystal, Oceania, Royal Caribbean and a bunch of lines that have been incorporated into other lines. The great and good. We were impressed with the consistency of the quality of the meals in MDR. We were on ...

Liked the cruise, not the ship.

We chose this cruise because we live in Vancouver and didn't have to fly anywhere, we also love the 5 sea days each way. Embarkation took a very long time - our luggage got to our room before we did. Disembaraktion was very easy. I found the ship poorly laid out. It is a bunch of small, chopped up rooms with pillars every time you turn around. There are so many pillars in the Vista ...

Okay, but nothing memorable

The service was pretty good but no one went above the basics. The food was definitely a disappointment! The menu sounded great but what we were served did not reflect what was written! That applied to the appetizers, meat (chicken was usually the best choice), veggies were mundane and the desserts were repetitive. I don't care for spicy or exotic tasting things but it all just tasted the same, ...

Loved meeting up with our dinner companions every night in the Vista Dining Room

We chose this cruise due to the number of sea days as well as it left from Vancouver, BC. Having been on several other HAL cruises I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the food in the main dining room, didn't seem quite up to par and very long wait for meals. The wait staff seemed very busy and not as chatty as on previous cruises. We like to have a set dining time and absolutely loved ...
