Our first cruise - Alaska was awesome, HAL not so much

Review for a Alaska Cruise on Westerdam

We chose HAL Westerdam because we wanted to see Glacier Bay on our first trip to Alaska (and our first cruise!). We actually went against the advice of our travel agent who thought we would be happier with a luxury line even though they don't stop at Glacier Bay. I think she was right and next time we will listen to her. Westerdam Is not a bad ship but the decor is dated and the service can be ...

Wonderful cruise, horrible land tour

I love the many changes I've seen on the Westerdam, particularly the decor, which isn't garish like so many other HAL ships. I did find the 'entertainment' to be unbelievably poor, other than one lady who did a comedy/violin act. There was a magician who was laughingly pathetic, and the balance of the shows were performances by the HAL crew, not at all to my liking. We found ways to entertain ...

Vancouver to Seward - HAL Westerdam 5/27/2018 - 06/03/2018: We loved this cruise

We loved this cruise. First some information about why we did this cruise. My wife always wanted to cruise and to go to Alaska, while I was very skeptical of cruises in general. As a long haul plane/car/bus/train/ferry/backpack traveler I thought a cruise would be too boring, but she chose the one way Northbound which would sail on 5/27/2018 and I wanted to try the experience after all. ...

This cruise was a great value for the money. The food was always good, although I won't say it was ever amazing. The cabin stewards were fantastic. All the entertainers were really talented. The clients were mostly retired people, although we did see some families. This was definitely not a party ship. There were not a lot of extra things going on during the cruise, and usually the ...

My husband and I traveled on the Holland America Westerdam to Alaska in May (2018). Both of us were very pleased with the trip. Though we were embarking out of Vancouver we flew into Seattle and took the Amtrak Cascade. What a great way to travel! We found a fun, funky hotel (Moda) near the cruise terminal which was inexpensive and had a great restaurant/bar attached. We explored some of Vancouver ...

We did this cruise coming straight off a relocation cruise Sydney to Vancouver on the Noordam. We disembarked the Noordam at 10 am and boarded the Westerdam 3pm on the same day. All went smoothly and we were able to drop our luggage in the morning which allowed us to explore Vancouver during the day. This was the Westerdams second cruise after a major refit so everything was fairly new ...

This is quite a lengthy and detailed review, so I've decided to split it into two sections. The first section is a review of the ship itself, and its services, eateries, and amenities. The second part of the review will cover the itinerary, our experiences in port, and the shore excursions we went on! Having already experienced the best of Alaska courtesy of Celebrity Cruises in 2014, we ...
