Ok so my grandparents took me on this cruise ship and I wasn’t so sure if it would be a good experience. Legitimately right as we stepped foot on the ship we were greeted by so many polite staff members. This one man, John who was the person that cleaned our room, did a phenomenal job at socializing with me, answering questions I had about his experience and the awesome things that I would do, and also making the cabin super clean and cozy. He really made me feel at home and it really shows how awesome the staff are on this ship. That’s just one crew member out of a thousand. A fantastic part of the cruise in my opinion as a teenager was the all you can eat ice cream that was worked by very kind and patient women who by the end of the trip knew my order when they saw me walking up to them. Continuing the food topic, the buffet serves breakfast which was filled with a huge variety of delicious foods like Belgian waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, cereal, and lots of fancy stuff that I don’t remember the names of. Then when it was time for lunch the buffet would always surprise us with different things every single day. Now I know what your thinking, maybe all you can eat food that you can have any time you want, might not be your favorite, which is why I’d like to inform you that they had a pizza place where they hand made pizza of your choice and an area where you can order a burger with some fries. Moving to dinner, there was several places we could go to eat that all had amazing food and awesome waiters and waitress. I can’t remember his name, but this one waiter did magic tricks which entertained my family as we ate delicious food. I’m going to save the dessert for you to explore for yourself, but all I want to say Is that you should order the chocolate journey dessert because it tasted better than my words could describe it. Aside from eating tons of food, I would go to one of the pools. To be honest, I’m not sure how many there were, but it felt like a lot. I’d also go to the teen room which was an area I could socialize with other teens which helped me to have a gooOoOoooOD Time! I’d also go to the magic acts, and the comedian shows which were both totally awesome. There was also a “The Voice” competition that was held where people would sing and try to win the grand prize, which was fantastic to say the least. My dad actually made it into the finals and sang “The Summer of 69” by Bryan Adams which had the crowd cheering which was kind of weird to be experiencing as his son. There was also a game called The High Seas Heist which was basically a huge game of clue that you really needed to use brain power to figure it out. We also made 3 stops and a tour on the boat where we watched parts of glaciers fall off and make huge splashed which amazed everyone. We also did whale watching which required lots of patience, but ended up being so beautiful to see. One minor detail that I realized would be the maps that were placed around everywhere which helped me a lot when trying to find my way around. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I walked into the cruise ship expecting nothing to be fun for me, but walked out literally hugging and high-fiving the crew because of how much enjoyment they gave me. This ship has made me into a new person and I can’t wait to go back for another cruise very soon! Thanks for reading this through, make sure to have a Goooood Time! Read Less

In reading many of the reviews and write-ups on this ship I started to think I was on the wrong ship. I did not experience any of the great service and food everyone else was raving about. By day 2 I had already written an email to Holland America expressing my concerns about the poor service and food quality on the ship. It felt like I was on a training voyage for most of the staff. Let's start with the Dining Room. On my first night I asked my server what my complimentary drink options were with dinner and he could not answer the question. Same result when the Wine Steward was asked. I was a little taken back when I was told a can of Coke would be $2.50 with dinner. Really? Seems like nickel and diming when I can get a nice steak for dinner but have to pay for a soda. (Carnival got this right!). I had numerous experiences where the staff had to clarify simple orders several times (I do not have an accent), and several occasions where the wrong meal was served. I had steaks that were way overcooked, I had fish & chips where the fish was still a gelatinous mass and totally inedible. Diner was served without cutlery, steaks served without steak knives, a nearly empty bottle of ketchup provided for the whole table and everyone had fish and chips and wanted to have some. The waiter disappeared when asked for a full bottle and never came back. Another server had to be asked. In general, the Dining Room staff seemed untrained and confused most of the time. The fish & chips lunch special was a farce. We were one of the first tables seated, and yet 45 minutes later, while most other tables were already on to desert, we hadn't been served yet. And when we finally were, the fish was extremely under cooked. My daughter was ill after eating her first bite. We ended up leaving and finding some food on the Lido deck. On to the Lido deck buffet. In general the food on the Lido was OK. It was not exceptional by any means. Many of the preparation staff were obviously untrained with under and over-cooked food, and improperly prepared food. I've had better food at cheap buffet restaurants. My previous Carnival cruises far outperformed Holland America's Lido Deck offerings. Many of the table staff were non-responsive when thanks were given for their service. The hot water dispenser was constantly running out of water, and the milk dispenser for tea and coffee was also often empty. I had staff disappear and never return when I asked for the for more the milk to be refilled. I had one server tell me to go to the other side of Lido deck when the ketchup dispenser was empty instead of sourcing some for me. My food was getting cold as I wandered around trying to find ketchup, and in the end the dispensers on both sides were empty. The server seemed miffed when I approached her and asked again. In general there didn't seem to be any pride or ownership in the food preparation, and the staff didn't really seem to remember why they were there. Guest Services also dropped the ball on more than one occasion. I decided to have a movie night with my daughter and ordered a couple DVDs to our stateroom. 30 minutes later the wrong DVD was delivered. I asked for the correct ones and was promised he'd be right back. 30 minutes later, with no calls from Guest Services and no delivery, I called again and was told they would call me right back with a status. 45 minutes later I went to Guest Services and the DVDs were still sitting there, and one was not the selection I had requested. So 1 3/4 hours after my initial call I finally had the DVDs. When Guest Services was made of aware of my email to Holland America head office, they addressed 1 of the issues and had no comment on any of the other issues. I had been relating my issues to one of the staff, and they passed the info to one of the ship's officers who later tracked me down. We had a long conversation about the issues I'd experienced and he agreed that most of the issues I'd experienced were totally unacceptable and they had dropped the ball on multiple occasions. He promised to speak with the various department heads and ensure the rest of the trip would be issue free. Unfortunately this was not the case as there was no change in the service for the rest of the trip. On the 2nd to last night in the Dining Room we were presented with a couple of complimentary glasses of Prosecco, which neither of us drink. The better option would have been to come up and tell us that they would like to offer us a complimentary drink and ask us what we would like. We never bothered going back to the Dining Room after that. The last drydock did make some nice upgrades to the stateroom bathrooms, but they should have replaced the old tube TVs while they were at it. Our TV looked like Alaska in winter. Almost not worth trying to watch anything on it. Certainly not the quality we'd have expected based on the cost of the room. We did have some great service from our room stewards, and 1 Lido deck server whom I recognized personally at the end of the cruise. I also had Guest Services remove all the gratuities from my final bill as they were definitely not earned. The cruise itself was great, and despite all the service and food issues we had a good time, however the added stress of dealing with my feelings of being shortchanged by the cruise line did put a damper on a lot of the cruise. I don't get a lot of opportunities to take vacations like this and to pay this much and then be so let down after being sold that Holland America was a premium cruise line. Never again. Read Less

Fantastic Family Journey Amazing sights, amazing ship. Shore excursions could not have been better. Ship personnel were friendly and courteous The food and restaurants were top notch. Cabin was comfortable and the view from our balcony was outstanding. We were midship so , for the most part, any ship motion was virtually imperceptible. The itinerary could not have been planned better. We saw so much in such a short time. The excursions offered by Princess, gave a wonderful choice of things to do and see in Alaska. The information provided also allowed us to choose excursions with the proper activity levels for seniors and a child. Never had time to attend any shows onboard. We came back from our excursions hungry and exhausted. If there’s any drawback, it’s the amount of sales pitches going on for the ship shops. The meeting that was supposed to be about the shopping in ports, turned out to be a sales pitch for jewelry for sale onboard. Too much time wasted sitting in sales pitches Read Less

Visiting Alaska has been on our bucket list for some time. Princess Cruises has a stellar reputation when it comes to Alaskan Cruises and was highly recommended by our Travel Advisor. The ship has been beautifully redone in the past few years and the cabins and amenities are top notch. The ship offers a wide variety of daily activities but on and off the ship. We had a starboard cabin which was very important on the north bound cruise as we could see the shoreline and the various scenic wonders. A balcony is also highly recommended. The restaurant facilities from the Bistro to the common dinning rooms and the specialty restaurants offered impeccable service and the quality and variety of the food was very good. The Italian Restaurant, Sabatin's, is a must go. The staff is unbelievable and the food is exquisite. The only negatives I have is that I caught a bad chest cold and the "convenience" story had a very limited supply of OTCs medicines. However, the Medical Facilities are top notch and the medical staff was great. The other negative is that the internet service on the ship is poor. The speed is excessively slow (measured at app 1 Mbs) considering that I was required to pay to access the system. Definite area of future improvement to the ship. Read Less

The carpeting in the Lido Cafe was dirty and worn. The bathroom was very small and Water came sloshing up in our shower basin and left dirt flecks behind. Embarkation was NOT well done. The agent that gave us our cabin key did not explain the deck # system so it took us 45 minutes to find our cabin. There were not enough crew members available to direct guests as they arrived on board. Also, there were not enough waiters available in the buffet dining area so we wound up getting our own drinks. There was a definite lack of communication about meeting up with excursions both from the lodges and at the ports. I'm not at all sure that I would sail with Princess again unless it was a newer ship. Read Less

Norwegian cruise was a smooth sail for us all. The checkin/checkout process was very well organized compared to any other cruise we have done so far. The range of restaurants and variety of food this ship offered was amazing. Housekeeping was great. At the sea entertainment had things for all ages. Dance party was great!! Service was exceptional. We really enjoyed our cruising experience. The ports were perfect and so was the weather for us!! Beverage package is worth it only if you have 2 or more drinks per day, otherwise you could just purchase drinks on the go. Speciality dining was good, we enjoyed the food and ambience in La Cucina. We were a little disappointed with the Teppanyaki restaurant, the portion sizes were huge and lot of food was wasted. The photo package could definitely be improved, the current package has no savings per se, as the individual photos are cheaper than the package. Overall, we had a great cruising experience. The Jewel crew originated mostly from southeast Asia. That means the pizza on board tasted terrible but the Malaysian and Indian food was the best I ever had. I gained 10 pounds. My wife gained 7 pounds. Our 1 year old daughter gained 2 pounds. We got off the ship fat and happy. I really appreciated the Guppies playroom. My daughter and I were there at least 4 hours a day on Sea days. They have interactive programs and tons of toys to keep my daughter entertained. A few tips regarding the Jewel: -Teppanyaki is the most popular option on board. You must book a reservation 3 months before your sailing date. -Grab a seat for shows 30 minutes before showtime. Evening entertainment is very popular. -Book a shore excursion with less people. I went dog sledding in the afternoon instead of the morning, which was the less popular time slot. Everybody in my group got lots of cuddle time with their own puppy! -Juice is only served in the mornings. The rest of the day, their beverage stations serve flavored water. Fill a container in the morning and store in your mini fridge Vancouver cruise terminal is horribly inefficient. Long lines and grumpy workers ruined our embarkation day. Our cabin filled with cigarette smoke on the 5th day. The staff did their best to remove the smell but I wish they could have thrown all the smokers overboard instead. Read Less

Our trip on the Noordam Holland America was planned by my in-laws. My preference is Regent Cruise lines. Coming on the ship I had very low expectations and I my expectations were correct. The ship is somewhat worn. The food is average. I will say the service especially in the dining room was outstanding. Our waiter was Nadi, assisted by Ed and Janela. These three people were the highlight of the trip. Very attentive and aware of everything. I hate being nickeled and dimed but that’s what this cruise line is all about. We paid a small fortune for our suite. One would think WiFi would be included....not. If you want to use a spin bike in the gym, nope.....unless you take an 8 am class for 15.00 per person. In the spa, be careful. They will ask you if you like this or that. If you say yes, they will upcharge your bill. Many people will look at the base price of a cruise line like this and think I’ll save money vs Regent. When you add up all the add in charges: Drink package Excursions Mini bar in the room (not included in drink package) Automatic small print tips of 16.00 per day per person and compare to the price of Regent, you’ll come out pretty close on total cost. All these things are included on Regent. I’ll not take another Holland America cruise and I recommend you look at Regent. Read Less

We chose this cruise for an extended family vacation (16 people), several of us having been to Alaska six years ago on a Princess cruise. We were disappointed, especially, in how crowded the ship was. We have taken two previous Princess cruises to Alaska on different ships and did not experience this. The Royal Princess is one of the largest Princess ships, but it seems that they did not increase the size of the common areas accordingly to accommodate the additional passengers. We felt like they just wanted to squeeze as many passengers on board as possible, without regard for what this would mean to the shipboard experience. The ship was understaffed in terms of hosts in the restaurants (long waits and confusion about seating) so it was difficult to get in for dinner during Anytime Dining hours. There was only one working washer and dryer on our floor (Baja - 11) when I went to do laundry the first time and the second time all of the token machines on every floor were broken. On the positive side, we were able to make same day dinner reservations, which worked out well. The servers in the restaurants were very friendly and attentive. The International Café, which served coffee, sandwiches, pastries, etc. was a wonderful option for something quick to eat. The kids also enjoyed the gelato shop. The option of having a sit down breakfast or lunch in the Allegro dining room, rather than the Horizon Court buffet, was also a welcome option and we never had any trouble getting a seat there. The mini-suites we stayed in were very nice and the beds were wonderful, super comfy! Lastly, the embarkation and disembarkation process was very easy and efficient. Happily surprised at how easy they were. Overall, the cruise was nice, but not up to par with our previous Princess experiences. They should end the stupid art auctions and other product sales pitches and put those staff to work helping passengers. We are unlikely to take another Princess cruise based on this experience. We used to be frequent cruisers, but life happens and this was the first cruise we have been able to take in 22 years. It was worth waiting for. What a great ship and crew. The service was amazing, the food was delicious and there was plenty to do and see. The ports (Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway) were fun and interesting. Glacier Bay is simply one of the most beautiful places on earth. We had a balcony room on deck 8, forward. I think next time we will try to stay on that deck, but more midship. In the 22 years since we last cruised, some traditions have ended, at least on this ship. For example, I miss the traditional picture with the captain on one of the formal nights and the champagne waterfall was a disappointment. They only poured the top glass and then invited passengers to pour, but it was more a photo-op than anything spectacular and it took a very long time. Also, if you want to do a bridge tour, I heard it was unavailable unless you do an excursion package and it cost $150.00. I cannot confirm that was true, but that is what my wife was told. All of those things were minor compared to how great this cruise was. Read Less

Overall perspective: We had a phenomenal time. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Our critiques are real, but ultimately we really enjoyed ourselves. Ship Condition: If you look hard, you can tell the Millie is not a new ship. There are some layouts that clearly would not be picked if you were building a new ship (Qsine blocking a stairway, sushi on 5 in the middle of a wine bar). In other places there is a lot of paint trying to cover corrosion. I would not, however, describe her as worn or tired. She is in good shape and I think the revolution likely helped substantially. We liked the “old look,” but we like the “new look” too. The new colors are much brighter and it did not feel like ikea to me. Stateroom perspectives: We stayed in CS 8106. Overall, we were very pleased with the room. It looks nice in person and met our needs for the cruise. There were, however, “Kelly Hoppen” functionality issues in both our room, my parents room, and the retreat areas. On the balcony, there were only two seats, a table, and a couple of monolithic footrests. There was easily room for a third chair, but that request was too much for my stateroom attendant (who was otherwise very good). Having the aft balcony of the pair was nice and we spent substantial time out there. No USB outlets were available in our room that I could find. The only bedside plugs were stolen by bedside lamps. Limited plug availability in the rest of the room. As previously stated on the boards, the couch faces the TV instead of the great windows. I “accidentally” rotated it 90 degrees the first morning while everyone was asleep. Based on the carpet color and cleanliness underneath, I would guess I was the first one to do this in 8106 on Millie since revolution. This blocked one of the many underused cabinets, but was otherwise great. Staff didn’t say a word about it but very quickly vacuumed. My parents stayed in SS 8117. They had the now infamous chair that doesn’t slide under the desk. There were some orange highlights they did not enjoy, but it was not offensive to myself or my wife. The blue highlights in our CS were nicer. The couch on their balcony was nice, but there is a pole that is not ideal. We needed that stateroom to support our configuration, but I would not pick it if I had more flexibility. My kids were in 8119. There were more plugs and USB outlets in their room than in my room and my parents room combined. The stateroom attendant for 8117 and 8119 was Jay. He was great. At some point my 9 year old was about to get lost on the ship and Jay rescued him. I will try to find some pictures, but there have been previous photos on the boards of both 8117 and 8106. In general, Kelly Hoppen furniture is poorly thought out from a practicality perspective. Thankfully there are hundreds of throw pillows available and they work quite nicely at making oddly shaped chairs more comfortable. Dining: Most nights we ate at Luminae and loved it. Rolando was our server and he was phenomenal. Menu was varied and we were able to find something enjoyable with each experience. Even when we had the full party of 6, we did not have to wait for a table. At the strong suggestion of the maitre’d Bochi, we did try to aim before or after the big rush of 6:30 or 7. We definitely noticed improved service when it was less busy, but we weren’t terribly dissatisfied at any point. Wine by the glass with the premium drink plan is just awkward. If you want to get better than the equivalent of $10 a bottle stuff (retail price), it gets frustrating. The “sommelier” was nice but seemed to struggle with getting me things in the $12 to 20 dollar a glass range. One night I ended up getting a bottle because I was annoyed by his selections. He also seemed a little too revenue-driven. For example, the Caymus others have gotten for $55 a bottle when on the drink plan, he offered to me for $90. We also ate at sushi on 5. I have no strongly positive or negative perspectives on the experience. I would probably do it again if the cruise was long enough, but I found myself questioning the value. We worked our butler, Nelson, to the bone with room service breakfast. They weren’t perfect-a couple of times a side dish got forgotten. The one time it was “important,” Nelson noticed on his own and got it fixed. To their credit, I made it hard. Every order form had special requests. My wife likes a latte- handwritten in every day. A bowl of berries for the kids handwritten in every day... Bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese handwritten in one day... to their credit, they did it right with capers and red onions. Room service breakfast is never going to be as good as fresh in the restaurant, but when you have a wife and kids that sleep like mine, it really made our vacation much less stressful and I am thankful for it. The OVC/buffet food was quite good for a buffet. It was not fancy like Luminae, but there were plenty of options and the international options were nice. I was pleasantly surprised with the food. Conversely, the service was inconsistent. For bar service, they should just set up convenient bar stations and let us go get our own drinks. Trying to do it with inadequate staff is a recipe for frustration. More than once, I just went to the closest bar to get my own drink. Similarly, at one point my daughter spilled pasta all over the place. No one noticed or helped even after we notified them. Thankfully there was no sauce on it... Lastly, the ice cream station got overwhelmed and the scooper desperately needed backup. Conversely, the food stations were kept fully stocked and the staff that was available were almost entirely competent and kind. None of the the issues caused me to have a bad vacation! Suite life: We used both the retreat lounge and sun deck fairly extensively. We liked the personalized service. Mary, the lead bartender in the retreat lounge, was of particular note. She was smart, attentive, and good at mixing drinks and interacting with my kids. The sun deck is nice, but not world class yet. It seemed a little underutilized with the notable exception of the Hubbard glacier day. The staff there was nice, but it was a lot slower to get drinks or food. At times we would visit and there didn’t seem to be anyone there who did bar service, just someone who cleaned things up. A short drink menu of things they can turn around quickly with their local limited bar would help them and their customers. At one point my wife ordered a cosmo and that just about blew their minds. While a gin and tonic might come out fast, other drinks could easily take 10 minutes. Whirlpool temperature should be 5-10 degrees warmer too. On the Hubbard glacier day, it would have been a no brainer to have mimosas and bloody Mary’s circulating, but alas it was not to be. They did circulate warm pea soup and beef consommé or broth or something. Shore side concierge was very kind, but useless to me. I asked for the mini bar to be cleaned out and no kiwi, walnuts, or pecans to enter the room because of my daughters allergies. That was a fail on both counts (kiwi on fruit plate for room service). My children, being young, were able to partake in all the suite things gratis. Ports: Embarkation was awkward. Vancouver makes you do a lot of walking. Some of it seemed quite unnecessary. We had all pre-taken pictures, but the person insisted on retaking several of them. Security was very annoyed by my retake which was apparently quite bad. I found that humorous. I saw the “special delivery,” drop off for RS and PS, but there was no escorting aboard and the lines were equally short for everyone. Not that we really needed one. Instead I escorted my family to the retreat and to Luminae soon after. I got to visit the naughty room! The staff onboard was quite amused that it was called the naughty room. For some reason I had decided to lug along my kids white noise machine (marpac). It is literally a fan in a box, but that was baffling to the security guys. I tried them to get an electrician involved, but it wasn’t going anywhere and I had important drinking to do. We have apps on our devices that can be used in these situations! All of the main ports were suffering from the cruise ship profit-making apparatus. Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway all were overwhelmed with diamond stores and other tripe like that. Not sure why people buy diamonds on vacation from chain stores. Thankfully, Mother Nature was not far away. We found it very easy to get out and enjoy through many short hikes and excursions. In Ketchikan we took the Bering sea crab tour. Officially it was “on our own,” although the official celebrity tour cost more... they sat right next to us. If you booked through Celebrity, you got a sticker too! After lunch at Annabelle’s (an old brothel), we hiked the rain bird trail. Taxi up to the college parking lot and walk back to the ship. The last mile or so is on city streets, but downhill. You can have cab pick you up if desired. Internet describes it as “easy,” but be aware that rating is by people who hike a lot. With younger kids I would say it was intermediate. Icy Strait Point is unique. It is commercialized by the tribe, but only by local businesses. It is hokey, but in a nice way. We took a private tour through Hoonah Whale Tours that was phenomenal. An orca actually swam under our boat (boat was off & orca turned and swam towards us). It turned out the boat captain’s mom owned a shop in ISP. I would definitely take a private tour over those big boat tours if you can. That area in Alaska definitely seems to be better than Juneau or Skagway for whale watching. The nature trail on the property is very, very short and pretty short on nature too. Be aware they are building additional new docks. It appears ISP will be over-run next year. In Juneau we did the ship’s gold panning tour. It was cute, the guide was nice, and our 9 year old was happy. Amazingly, you actually can get flakes of gold out of the stream even today. We also did the Mt Roberts tram and hiked around on our own. Then we took a lyft to the hatchery, which is also good for kids and people who like salmon. Plan ahead- it is much less interesting when the fish aren’t running. Skagway we did the train ride and lunch at the brewery. The weather was rainier there for us, likely impacting my impression of the place. I had already done the helicopter tour thing, but if you haven’t, Seward is a good place to do it. Hubbard glacier was jaw-dropping. If you can cruise with an afternoon time slot (I think the southbound tours), your odds for better weather are improved, but we did fine. I certainly didn’t cruise away thinking “gosh I wish we had gone to glacier bay.” Seward disembarkation was easy from the boat perspective. The small bus transfer up to anchorage was a little awkward, but that was mainly my fellow cruisers’ fault. I will neither condemn nor praise the vendor. Afterwards, the guys went fishing for several days in Elfin Cove at Elfin Cove Resorts. It was a ton of fun, but their guides don’t have very much experience right now. I will refrain from doing a full review on cruisecritic. Travel: We had one of those cautionary tales about booking margin into your calendar. We had about 22 hours of margin to sail away in our planned schedule. Our first flight (Pittsburgh to Toronto) on Air Canada was cancelled due to a mechanical issue with the plane (a CRJ-200, well known in aviation circles for reliability issues). After much waiting on hold and standing in line, they were going to be unable to re-book us on any practical schedule that would assure us we would make the cruise. In a reminder of the value of flexibility, we saw how many flights happened between Toronto and Vancouver and rented a car on our own and drove to Toronto. Air Canada was then able to rebook us on a later flight the same day. We ended up about 8-10 hours late into Vancouver. Air Canada refunded the price of the Pittsburgh to Toronto leg after I submitted a request, but nothing beyond that. Read Less

The Dining and food selection had many options to fit even the most picky eater. Service is second to none! The views of the Glaciers and ocean creatures were fantastic. We traveled with 18 people from many ages categories. everyone had several things they enjoyed and will remember about their special family vacation. The excursion were fun, timed perfectly, educational, exciting, entertaining and very enjoyable. The activities on the ship were fun and varied. Game shows, mysteries, dancing, games, animal watching, crafting, wine tasting, auction, swimming, just to name s few. The teenagers enjoyed meeting other teens in the youth club. The 18-20 struggled with meeting people their own age and had limited access to appropriate activities for them on the ship. The land portion had wonder coach drivers who enjoyed sharing interesting information about the areas we rode through. One thing that we wished to have done before the cruise started was to explore Vancouver, Canada. The land portion was breathtaking but felt very rushed. This cruise had a good entertainment and activities too. We enjoyed all the shows. Hats off to the hard working Housekeeping and restaurant staff. We booked few excursions through ship and it went well. We could not do much at Juneau port due to not so good weather. This cruise had excellent itinerary. We covered nice ports, beautiful glaciers and some great food at shores/ports too. We are not so pleased with the quality and taste of the food at complimentary restaurants. It’s really very disappointing to see Indian food tastes below average when the cruise had Head Chef and F&B manager from India. This is a shame! Overall we had a good time. Read Less

We selected Regent because we have friends who highly recommended Regent as the best in the business. We were a party of 9 on this cruise to Alaska. 1 Grand Suite, 3 Penthouse Suites, and 1 Concierge Suite. The cabins were very nice although the Grand Suite had A/C problems from the start and took repair on several occasions. This should have been repaired prior to boarding. All other staterooms were in good condition except for a bathroom door that needed repair. Lets talk about water. Yes water. Regent has decided to process their own bottled water with little information as to where the water is coming from other than to say they have a new filtration system. We preferred Evian water which they had but it was like pulling teeth to make sure it would be available. Many times we would wait 5 to 10 minutes for our waiter to locate and provide us our request which is unacceptable. Also our Butler made it clear that it was not readily available. Really, on a 6 star ship Evian is not available. Somehow throughout the cruise we were accommodated. They are pushing their new water claiming that it is more ecological for the environment. I guess Regent no longer recycles? Lets talk about the food. We have been on several other cruise lines some with the same rating as Regent and others with 5.5 Stars and their food is much superior to Regents. We dinned in the Steak house that apparently serves USDA Prime Beef. Trust me this is not Prime Beef unless the new definition is bring a chain saw with you to dinner. The veal is also very tough. There is no question in our minds that NCL is using their standard beef selection from their other lines on Regent. We dined their several times and the beef just does not add up to choice much less Prime. The main dinning room was just ok and most of the food is pre prepared, and when served shows dried out edges on the food, in some cases food was served cold. Breakfast, lacks any special flair and the pancakes on one day were literally inedible and the bacon was full of grease and clumped together. Typical cafeteria style food. Does this sound like a "6" star ship ? Lunch, was ok but again nothing special like other 5.5 and 6 star ships. They also had a grill outside near the pool that had no ventilation and you could eat their but then you needed to wash your clothes and take a shower as you smelled like you had been working as a short order cook. This is not an exaggeration by any means. With the cabin categories we had for the 9 people and Butler service you would think making dinner reservations would be easy. Think again. The ship is well maintained overall and pleasant. The captain did a 5 minute viewing of Hubbard Glacier as he did not plan ahead for the bad (fog) weather and their was a ship right behind ours that was on schedule for their viewing of the glacier. One of the main reasons for the cruise is the Glacier but somehow the Captain missed the memo. We cannot say this was a bad cruise but neither can we say it was a great cruise and by no means a "6" Star cruise. This is the problem when great cruise lines get bought up by larger more generic cruise lines. They try and integrate less with more and end up average. Read Less

I would highly recommend this trip! The cruise staff were excellent! Food outstanding - and plenty of it!! Entertainment was varied - there was something for everyone!! We really enjoyed our excursions - especially the helicopter ride to the glacier as well as whale watching, crab eating, zip-lining, and whitewater rafting. The exercise classes available were great as well as the Lotus Spa massage, manicure/pedicures. We had a medical emergency and the doctors and nurses were very knowledgable, professional, kind, caring - especially at 1:00 a.m.!! They made all of the difference in the world to our trip! My sister renewed her 25th Anniversary wedding vows with her husband which was a very touching, beautiful night!! We loved the last night eating in the Bayou dinning room where we got to celebrate all of the workers there! We loved that the cruise staff was diverse and from all over the world!!! Read Less

We had never been to Alaska and found this cruise to be wonderful. All the staff worked very hard to make this a great experience. The ship was a moderate size and somewhat older, but it was hard to tell this, as it was well kept. The food was the best of any cruise so far. The entertainment was first class, and not of poor quality as I have experienced on other cruise lines. The two non-disembarked destinations of Glacier Bay, and College Fiord were the highlight and the best experience of any cruise yet. The embarking and disembarking were extremely easy, and made so that it all goes very smoothly. We have decided that we will look for ships of this size rather than the mega ships for our future cruise choices. Choose excursions carefully. most bus tours can't be duplicated off the ship, but the Seaplane rides are available for half the price. We enjoyed this cruise very much. Read Less

Traveled with my wife, two daughters (in their 20s), their boyfriends and one of his daughters (9) on the Celebrity Eclipse departing July 7 returning July 14 round trip from Vancouver. We stayed in Vancouver at JW Marriott Parque for three nights prior to the Sunday departure. We had two full days in Vancouver. I woke up first thing in the morning and walked to the Canada Place Cruise Terminal to watch a HAL ship dock, walked back to the hotel and met up with the family. We did the Capilano River Regional Park (recommended), and then Gas Town. Had lunch at a restaurant named Local-ok. My wife and I had dinner at Provence Marinaside-excellent and enjoyed tasting many different BC wines. They are able to draw a glass or taste out of any bottle with a syringe and nitrogen. Following day went to Granville Island by Ferry (recommended) and then the Science Place (I have aged out of this attraction but interesting and more suited for young children. Dinner with everyone at Floata in China Town-food was excellent but ambiance was like being in the twilight zone. It is on the third floor of a mostly empty shopping center and it appears more like a banquet hall than a restaurant. The food made up for the atmosphere. Great Dim Sum and Peking Duck. That night, hung out at a bar on a 6th floor terrace-Paul McCartney was in concert next door, so we listened to the end and the encore while we enjoyed our nigh caps. Embarkation day my wife and I went to Mass at the Holy Rosary Cathedral and returned to the hotel to meet the kids et al and catch a private transfer to the terminal. I arranged the transfer through the concierge in a micro bus, rather than hail 3 cabs. There is no Uber et al in Vancouver. We arrived about 12:45 pm at the terminal and it was not too crowded. My wife and I were in a suite, so we all breezed through except for the bottleneck and US ICE. It took, about 30 minutes to clear. Once on the other side, we were met by a greeter and escorted on board and to our cabins. My wife and I were in RS 1612 and the children were in connecting Veranda staterooms 9233-9255. Suite was awesome, so was the butler and the steward. It was really nice to have the living area for congregations. First night we all dined at Luminae. Excellent food and service. Better quality wines than MDR. We did pay for our children to join us, but it was worth the price for the wines. There are higher quality wines not on the menu and you do not pay any up charges. First day at sea we explored and ate lunch at Sushi on 5-Lobster R amen highly recommended. Dinner at Muranos (excellent). Second day was Sitka. We watched the arrival from the Helicopter pad. I have been to Sitka many times before (cruises and fishing). So my wife and mostly walked, shopped, and did walk through the Historic Park. You now shuttle to town from a cruise dock located about 10 miles north. Last time I was in Sitka on a cruise, it was a tender. Kids did excursions. Third day was Hubbard Glacier-breathtaking. We catered a lunch in our cabin (sushi, salads, apps, and roast beef sandwiches). Very cool to entertain in your suite with a Glacier in the background. There was an excursion for an up and close view of the Glacier, in hindsight this would have been a very cool excursion. Next day was Junea. I hired a cab from the taxi line for a morning tour and we went to Mendenhal, the Arboretum and the Tram. Highly recommend all and the cab kept us away from the crowds. We had a late lunch of crab and Tracey's (recommended), shopped and then a drink at the Red Dog Saloon (must see). Dinner that night was MDR. Next day was Ketchikan were my wife and I went Zip lining. Good excursion but in hind sight on a short port day, I rather would have explored Ketchikan. My wife's advise is to book the excursions on longer port days, so you also have time to explore. Dinner was at Tuscan. Highlight was the appetizers. I order an upcharged NY Strip-flavor was good but the texture was mushy (think more short rib than steak). Stick to the apps and Italian offerings. Next day was at Sea with lunch at Sushi 5 and dinner at Luminae. We did the ship's tour which was very cool. My daughter won a bingo while playing our cards. I told her I would split the winnings, so I used my half to spread some love to the crew who had taken care of us so well the prior week. Embarkation is painless in suite class. My wife and I bar hopped the prior evening while our butler packed for us. So we just went to bed, woke up about 8:00, was at Michael's Club by 9:00, and hung out until after the last boarding group was called. We were escorted off the Ship through Customs. Two of our party disembarked first thing in the am to catch a flight home by 12:20 pm, they made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare in a cab. The remaining group needed a large Taxi, so we had to wait about 25 minutes for them to procure one. We stayed at the Westin Grand (JW was nicer but the service was very good). We went to church, had Pho and then went to the Maritime Museum with dinner at Granville Island. We walked home (doable but about an hour) and had Gelato as a reward. To bed for early return Passage home was unremarkable except for realizing we needed a duffel to fit our dirty clothes with the original space in our suitcases displaced by our purchases. Went downstairs at 6:30 am to inquire as to procuring luggage on an early Monday in downtown Vancouver from the bellman. The Concierge overheard my conversation, told me to sit tight, and procured me a large hard suit case from housekeeping that was left by another guest. Returned to my room, insured the lack of contraband in said suit case, and from leaving the hotel to sitting in the Maple Leaf Lounge was one hour. Every night was saw a show which we enjoyed. We also enjoyed Milos (a naturalist lector), the various live music and the silent disco. The ship is impeccable and so is the service. 95% of our food was delicious. I highly recommend the suite experience for two main reasons, first, you get to cut in line for everything and second you have free reign of the restaurants. My only expenses on the ship was inviting my kids plus to dinner, two excursions and the terrible steak. I did have some trepidation about a mass market ship but it exceeded my expectations and we reserved a cruise from Ireland to Iceland on Celebrity for next summer. The Ship itself is beautiful and well laid out. Time passed to quickly while on this cruise. I didn't even have time to visit the Casino other than 45 minutes of Blackjack showing my daughters how to play. My wife and I cruise with Crystal over Thanksgiving leaving from Miami. I will write a comparison then, but Celebrity is a great cruise for families in that my wife and I were abler to enjoy a Crystal like experience, while my kids enjoyed the plethora of activities available. This was my second trip to Alaska and my first time on Holland America. I was really impressed with this beautiful ship. It looked fresh and felt luxurious. There were plenty of elevators and lots of quiet places throughout the ship where one could settle in with a good book. The only time it felt crowded was peak times in the buffet. I liked having breakfast and lunch in the dining room. They served steak and lobster on the 2nd gala night and it was very good. Other Dining Room menu items for dinner were hit and miss. The buffet was typical. I noticed they didn't have trays and the staff dished up most of the food for you, which I didn't really like but apparently it reduces the incidence of illness. Unlike some other cruise lines I've been on, there didn't seem to be any theme nights in the buffet. We dined in Canaletto, the Italian specialty restaurant, one night and the food and service were first rate. I liked the films and talks showcasing Alaska. There were none of those dreadful "Vegas type" shows. There was an illusionist one night and a comedian. There was a dance group but it didn't appeal to me and I left. I loved the Lincoln Centre Stage featuring a piano quintette from Hungary and also the B.B. King Blues club. We had lots of fun at Trivia and Music Trivia. The staff were helpful, friendly and service oriented although I found sometimes there was quite a wait to get a drink. Speaking of drinks, I discovered the Ginger Mule and will ask for that next time. I didn't get off the ship in Juneau but took the White Pass and Yukon trip in Skagway and the Wilderness Exploration and Crab Feast in Ketchikan. Both through the ship and both very expensive. Converted to Canadian funds the cost was around $500.00. Our party included a 12 year old and a 16 year old. The younger one had a blast but we worried there didn't seem to be much for the teen. However, she said at the end that she would love to do another cruise. I had wheelchair assistance embarking and disembarking as I am on supplemental oxygen and the batteries don't last too long. I really appreciated this service. Disembarking was really well organized, probably the best I've ever experienced. All in all, a lovely week with family and friends. Read Less

Overall, the cruise was very good even though I don't feel Princess offered anymore than any other cruise line could offer. The Royal Princess was a beautiful ship and had no problems handling the number of passengers that were one the ship. The Aloha - 310 cabin was a balcony cabin with very comfortable beds. They were actually AMAZING. The space was very roomy for two people. We used anytime dining and went to the dining room most of the time. We found the food to be good but not outstanding. The drawbacks is the time it took in the dining room was way too long and the food was usually served at room temperature and not hot like we like it. The entertainment was lacking to say the least. We were expecting so much more entertainment to say the least. The crew was not as personable as other ships that we have used in the past. However, our steward, Eric, was wonderful. He was one of the few staff members that would take the time to carry on a conversation with you.The ports were outstanding and the Alaskan people are so friendly. We had 18 people in our party and everyone felt that the cruise was good but the big drawback was the lack of excitement on the ship. We all felt like the shows could have had a bit more life to them and that there could have been a few more. Since Princess is owned by Carnival, we would recommend to take a look at the excitement Carnival brings and add a bit of it to the Princess line. However, overall the cruise was very good. Couldn't see the glacier or fjord with all the people. No space at the rail.. Dining? Also down hill. Specialty dining room terrible for the price (steak House). The Italian was better. Not a single quiet area in the ship. Every area playing music. Couldn't read a book anywhere. Was told almost 800 children when they used to limit. We have cruised dozens of times on princess and carnival and I can say the lines between the two used to be significant. Now they are both almost the same. I think we need to try celebrity or Holland now... One more thing. Every contest or event they held in the atrium. Used to be quiet music or quartet.. Now it's games and yelling and boom boom boom music. I'm sad to see this in princess... Maybe their smaller ships still Cater to the quieter crowd but they lost their direction on this. And by the way we were on the twin of this ship the majestic in March for two weeks and same thoughts. Bigger is NOT better for anyone but princess and their bottom line. First, the bad. The Celebrity Suite was remodeled and generally a very good job. Except, unlike the regular rooms where the renovation put in a glass-doored shower, the much more expensive Celebrity Suite is left with a difficult to climb into bathtub with a plastic shower curtain -- which we asked be replaced due to smell and which they promptly did. Most important, and referred to in another review, this room (9096) is NOISY! The public space (pool, pool cafe, walkway into pool) is not only noisy all day, including chairs scrapping across the floor, which resonates right into the expensive suite, the NOISE continued all night, somehow. Among all the hotels and cruise ships we've been on, this is by far the noisiest room we've ever experienced. After many complaints, they did close the walkway above us from 10 pm to 6 am, which helped some nights and for some reasons did not help the other nights. FYI, because it is the top floor for units, there is also a large overhang on the outdoor balcony which blocked part of the review. Second, the rest was pretty good. We found the staff, including our butler, to be great -- friendly, competent, nice. We were a large family group so ate mainly in the main dining room for dinner and it was fine. We'd been on this ship before (pre-renovation) and thought the food a bit better this time around. The Martini Bar is well named, and the wines available on the Premium Beverage Package were completely fine, though once or twice we did order a bottle off the wine list. Third, the intiniary overall was good -- most Alaska cruises follow the same route/stops. One excursion was hardly worth it, but others were very enjoyable. Hubbard Glacier was amazing. At Icy Point (Hoonah) we strongly recommend lunch at the Crab House (Crab Shack?) -- the freshest biggest best King Crab we've ever had (and I used to live in Alaska) -- not cheap, for sure, but awesome. We have sailed with Carnival and Royal Caribbean previously. I was led to believe that Princess was a step up, so to speak, in quality. I was disappointed. First off, why Vancouver? The embarking experience was a waste of time. Vancouver looks to be a beautiful city, one that I wouldn't mind going back to. But for someone traveling in to embark on a cruise, the amount of time it took to go through Canadian customs and immigration for the sole purpose of getting on the ship was a joke. First you exit the plane and go through this maze of a line just to get downstairs, then another maze to do the biometric screening. Then, after taking a 45 minute bus ride you get to the pier, where you go through another maze, go upstairs, check-in, then immediately go downstairs to go through US customs this time, then get on the ship. Why not just cruise from Seattle? So the good - the staff service was excellent, specifically, our waiters in the main dining room, Joepep and Rhyan. Our cabin steward, Dennis, was also very responsive. The scenery at Glacier Bay and the College Fjords was stunning. The food was average, nothing special. The "Crab Shack", now one of the "premier up-charge specialty" restaurants, is nothing more than a cordoned-off area on the Harbor View buffet deck. We were really disappointed there. The "not-so-good" - our balcony cabin was tiny in comparison to what we had with Carnival before - the only place to sit down inside the cabin was on a chair or on the bed - grant it, we were either on the balcony or somewhere else on the ship, but Carnival at least gives you a couch to sit on as well. The shower was claustrophobic. So net/net, in my opinion, if you're looking for a cruise that has a specific itinerary/destinations, or one that has minimal kids running around, Princess will provide that for you. Expected better. We are elite cruisers with Princess (have sailed on many ships) and booked two 7 day Alaska cruises from July 3 - July 17, 2019 on the Island Princess. This ship is sadly lacking in public amenities and the cabin was so small you couldn't escape to it either. There is no International Cafe, which on other Princess ships serves a menu of very fresh food for 24 hours a day. After 11 pm the only snack available is from Room Service with a limited menu of food which you have to eat in bed as the stateroom has no chairs to relax in. There is no Skywalkers Lounge for a panoramic view of the scenery. There is no Vista Lounge as Princess took lovely lounge space and converted it to revenue producing cabins. There is no Adagio Lounge for relaxing. All that is left is the Wheelhouse and Explorers which are just bars meant to sell liquor and are not convivial day venues. The atrium has no appeal since it is constantly noisy with martini shaking and various music programs and no International Cafe to give you a nice cup of tea and a sandwich. The fitness room and gym are stuck inside with no windows to enjoy the view. The fitness room is so small you cannot stretch because of the number of people on the floor. Stretch classes have been cut from 30 minutes to 20 minutes and 10 minutes of that is taking foot impressions to sell orthotics. You cannot walk all the way around the Promenade Deck as it is always blocked off. There is no jogging track. There is extremely limited deck space since the Horizon Court is at the bow of the ship and most ships have it aft with nice outside tables to enjoy the view out the rear of the ship. There is no aft pool which also affords a view on most ships. The Sanctuary is aft instead of amidship which cuts off the last opportunity to access the rear of the ship. We felt like prisoners on this ship, Stuck in limited public lounges with the Alaskan views only slightly visible through exceedingly dirty windows in the Horizon Court, the dining rooms and whatever few public areas remain. A fleet wide Princess problem is the lack of fresh food on their ships. Frozen fish is unacceptable on an expensive holiday with easy access to port reprovisioning. The only saving graces on this cruise were the entertainment and the staff. The entertainers were very good and on the second cruise we had 3 excellent production shows. The staff (other than Customer Service) were excellent. They are the biggest strength of Princess. Although we often cruise 2 or 3 times a year we are not in a hurry to book another cruise with Princess and will probably give Celebrity or RCCL another try. Read Less

Once in a lifetime cruise, what an amazing trip! Sailing the inside passage was beautiful and scenic. I sailed with my husband, son and sister with her family. We choose to sail from Vancouver to sail the inside passage and we have been on the Eclipse before and loved it! Once again Celebrity delivered an amazing vacation for my family. Arrived in Vancouver the day before and used the Canada line train from airport to hotel near Canada Place. We stayed at the Auberge Hotel, its location was perfect. Close walk from train and to Canada Place, no need for taxi at all. We ate dinner at the Elephant bar and it was very good. I have heard mixed reviews on check in at the pier so my husband and I decided to go down there early and check things out. After speaking with a worker at the port he suggested to check in before noon. We decided to collect our luggage at the Hotel and checkout at 10:30am and walked over to the pier. We entered through the parking garage and were expedited through immediately. We dropped our luggage and went on through to check in. We were told we could get our sea pass cards and not go through customs if we wanted to still explore Vancouver , but we decided to go right on the ship. My sister and her family stayed at the Pan Pacific which is on the pier. She just took the elevator down from the lobby right to check in so it was easy as well. The ship was in great shape and very clean . This was our second time on Eclipse and our 8th Celebrity cruise. The Eclipse was the first celebrity cruise we did when she was new and we have been hooked ever since. We have sailed Royal, Carnival, and Disney and Celebrity is perfect for us. The main reason is the consistency in their customer service and quality for what you pay. Plenty of choices for dinning and the quality to me hasn't changed much, but to be fair we usually don't dine in the main dinning room. For this trip we used Tuscan as our main dinning room and dinned in Murano as well. We stayed in Concierge class for this trip . Our cabin was exactly as expected, very clean but a little tired. We knew she was due for refurbishment, only complaint was the bed. It was very worn and hard as a rock. Thankfully their was beautiful scenery the entire cruise since we didn't sleep much. Tuscan grill is our favorite place to eat every cruise, since this ship doesn't have Lawn Club and the original Quisine restaurant we decided to do a five night package with Tuscan and Murano. I understand changing to La Petite Chef but I had no desire to try it. Not really into gimmicks just good quality food. Tuscan has cut back on their menu choices over the years but the quality is still great. Murano's menu never changes and its always good . In my opinion sushi on five is a bust, its never busy like it was when it was crepes and soups. We always go to the mast grill at least once and its good old comfort food. The ocean view was a bit more crowded then I remembered but the quality of food was still good. We did dine in the main dinning room one night all due to Menino Fernandes the maître D. What amazing customer service he offered us. We decided last minute to line up on deck 4 for anytime dinning and the line wasn't moving and the girl at podium wasn't saying anything just typing away on the computer. We waited fifteen minutes and decided to leave and go to Buffett so we didn't miss the comedian that night. As we were walking away my son was upset and we couldn't understand the lack out communication we entered the elevator and in comes Menino the maître D. He had over heard us and followed us in the elevator took us down to level three and walked us right to an available table. Amazing customer service, thank you! We had a great meal and still managed to make the show that night. Jorge was our server he was wonderful. Our server at Tuscan we had three nights was Shankar and one night Joby they were both great and attentive. Vladan and Irena were there to greet us each time with a smile and a welcome back great to see you again. This is why we love Celebrity they are always consistent with their customer service, they work really hard and always smile. We frequent café al bacio every cruise and they never disappoint. They were a lot of fun and service was great! The entertainment they brought on board was excellent as always. Loved the comedians! By far the best was Milos! He was charismatic and very informative. We went to all his lectures and loved his science talk in sky lounge. He really made our cruise. Thank you Milos! My husband and son took Oasis fishing charter from Ketchikan and enjoyed it very much. All ports had good shopping and beautiful sites to see. All in all another amazing vacation with Celebrity!
