We have travelled with Uniworld on other cruises and had found them very good. The Douro Valley was on our 'must do' list. Both the cruise and the ship exceeded expectations. Although the usual things ( mentioned below) met expectations it was the attitude of the staff on board and on arranged tours that made the trip very special. The staff were more than just friendly and helpful - they were an integral part of the experience. Their humour alone was worth the trip. Shore excursions were effortless and enjoyable, the scenery along the way was magnificant. Were held a professional conference on board for 80 delegates and although the ship was not designed for conferencing the ships crew did everything necessary to facilitate the smooth running of our conference including the rearranging of furniture and the set up of conference facilities daily, rescheduling tours, meals and events to accommodate conference sessions. The ship was lovely. Accommodations and dining were top notch. The staff went out of their way to make everything beautiful and delicious. There were plenty of tours and onboard activities to choose from. I chose to skip the shore excursions one morning, just so I could enjoy more of the ship's amenities! But most days, I didn't want to miss the cities we were visiting either. My group and I were pleased that Uniworld provided comfortable buses, when needed. And the tour guides were all locals who were especially knowledgeable about their cities and history. We were a group of five people traveling together, and we met many other people on the ship who were pleasant and interesting. My daughters (ages 38 & 40) enjoyed some more active hikes and bike rides. They immediately met people who they enjoyed being with as well. The additional tour options were definitely worth doing as well. It was lovely, lovely, lovely! Read Less

This was my first river cruise and heard that Uniworld would be the one to go with as they provide service, luxury and value. The service onboard can truly be called white glove service as all onboard truly provided you with the feeling that you are very important to each one onboard. The food onboard the SS Catherine was excellent from the morning juices, to the mid afternoon paninis and to our evening wine parings with local Michelin quality dining was superb. The ship is very well designed and decorated with rich overtures of the lovely French country side we would visit. With the ship sold out, the public spaces did not seem overloaded with guest and all flowed throughout the ship without a wait. The shore excursions are very well paced, whether you are active or not. Another important factor to choosing Uniworld was that all was inclusively well, no nickel and dimeing here at all. Read Less

Trip of a lifetime. Uniworld does everything first class. I can't wait to book my next river cruise with them! The cabin was elegantly furnished, the food was local and gourmet. The shore excursions were led by the most knowledgeable local tour guides available. From the moment you step onboard, the company's signature style of fabulous elegance is presented in full force. A large chandelier and leopard-skin circular sofa dominate the lobby, and natural light, fresh flowers and two parallel staircases combine to give passengers a warm welcome. River Countess might be elegant in style, but the dress code is resort casual. It caters to a predominantly English-speaking, retired clientele. After 10 years of service, River Countess underwent a total transformation in 2012, with more than $5 million worth of refurbishments. Immediately prior to its Italian debut, the ship received a few extra touches, including a pizza oven and a new tapestry behind the reception area. One of the most impressive spaces is the Sienna Salon Sky Lounge, a glass-walled conservatory-like cafe decked out with plants and outdoor furniture. On a blue-sky day, the cozy room lights up with sunshine. The main restaurant is also a sight to behold, with white leather booths, white tablecloths and white-tuxedoed waiters. Seven-night sailings are offered between April and November, with four nights spent in Venice, using the ship as a base. Other shore excursions -- to the historic and cultural delights of Verona, Bologna, Padua and Ravenna -- require coach trips of one to two hours. For these reasons, the itinerary may suit couples who can't decide whether to see Italy by road or river, as there is less sailing time than on the average cruise. Read Less

My husband and I just returned (Sept. 2016) from one of Uniworld's European Boutique River Cruises on The River Princess. We were on the Delightful Danube & Prague 10-day cruise. What a wonderful and memorable experience. Previously we had been on 4 ocean cruises. River cruising is a different experience...more personal and intimate. The ship's public and private rooms all are decorated lovely and both were kept very clean. The dining room service and food was top-notch! Breakfast and lunch were buffet style with wonderful presentations and a very wide-range of delicious choices - something for everyone. Dinner was sit-down and equally as delicious. The land tours were very well organized and the tour guides were excellent. If you go on this cruise, skip the Regensburg City Walking Tour - it was uninteresting. Instead, perhaps take the BMW Factory Tour. Most of the entertainment, including the Captain's presentation about the ship and guest lecturers were interesting, information and entertaining. There was only one night in Vienna (Von Trapp singer) that we did not care for. We were thrilled with this cruise experience and highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed! Read Less

This is an amazing cruise! We begin in Paris for the Normandy section of the cruise and then followed up with Burgundy and Provence. The entire trip was flawless from beginning to end. The S.S. Catherine was beautiful and well appointed in every aspect including the cabins. We found luxury bedding and choice of pillows, a beautiful marble bathroom with heated floors, and two huge windows that lowered. The service on board was amazing as was the food. They are happy to hear about any food allergies and watched over each passenger with great care at every meal to ensure that they are eating a menu that is right for the individual. Uniworld does not leave you alone for a minute. They met us at the airport, accompanied us on the bullet train down south, and took us to the airport when we left. On every tour there was a representative as well. The shore excursions were well planned, covered a variety of topics, and most were included in the price of the cruise. The guides were informative and well versed in the area. On one of our excursions, our guide took us to her family home that had harbored Jewish refugees during WWII. We were shown the tunnel from which they escaped the Germans, which were housed two doors down the block.. That was the most impressive day we could wanted. If you plan this trip, I hope you are lucky enough to have Adrian John as you Cruise Manager and Ariel as your butler. They made our trip so memorable. We have traveled to many place and taken many cruises, but none compare to Uniworld. Read Less

We picked Uniworld because of their reputation. Talked with many on the river cruise and they told us we made a mistake booking uniworld as our first river cruise because it can only be downhill from here unless we do another Uniworld. Everything was perfect. The food was over the top and not to mention the service. Even those who were not attached to our room would greet us every time they saw us. The tour were the best. We have done many tours over the years and many in Spain on the years trip prior to the river cruise and these tours were the best. Everything is high tech. With a TV in the mirror and the lighting system was top notch. On the tours they had excellent voice box you put around your neck and could hear the tour guide on the tour. The tour guides were all exceptional and spoke excellent English so we could truly understand. The drinks and gratuities were all included. And the drinks were top shelf if you wanted a cocktail. The only two downers were the exercise room as it was small and with 4 people in there it got a little crowded but then these are small boats and I guess you need to expect things like this. Also we booked a full balcony and paid extra for it thinking we would get a larger room. But when talking with others on ship the rooms are no larger and same type of window as the French balcony. Next time I will go that route. I loved the coffee room, where I could get a cup of coffee at anytime and a light breakfast at 6:00am. I am an early riser and this means a lot to me. Also I enjoyed the daily newspaper that was throughout the ship. Went well with my coffee in the morning. I was impressed on well they had everything organized. The tours were perfect times to travel and gave us free time and that was very important to us as we wanted to try some of the local food and beverage as well as do some shopping. They had maps at the front counter every day of the new port and it was very helpful to see where we were going. Can't say enough about this cruise except it will be very difficult to top it.
