This was our second cruise on Discovery 2 and we rebooted the cabins we had last year. 6533 an inside cabin for our teenage boys. It's a really good inside cabin. Lots of storage and a small sofa in the room as well. 6534 balcony cabin again good size for two of us. Both kept tidy by our cabin steward. Deck 6 is a good position on the ship between the coffee port and the front stair cases and lifts. Whole ship was kept so tidy the staff all work hard and are great team. Bit of a shame that the entertainment was identical to the shows on last years cruise .....festivals....Simon & Garfunkle .......strictly.....but we watched them and enjoyed. Food. Everyone has different taste but the food here will not disappoint. We ate breakfast in the buffet each morning .....choices of continental ...full fry up....chef specials and omelettes or fruit. You can have it in 47 the main dining room if you wish. If on board lunch can be a quick snack or full blown meal the choice is there. We ate at the 2 waiter service restaurants in the evening's and paid supplement to eat in surf and turf.......gorgeous steak....a must try. We did go with tuxedo and long dress and so did quite a few fellow passengers. We visited ports and did a mix of on our own independent tours on foot and we booked some must see visits..i.e. Vatican and Sistine Chapel and Pompeii ....felt a bit let down with the Pompeii trip so definitely do you homework on what exactly Marella and selling the trip as. I would diy a trip next time. This was our third Marella cruise but the lack of change in itinerary is putting me off booking another. Read Less

Why this Cruise? - Timing - We organised this trip to coincide with half term as one of our party is still of school age. The dates were correct for us and the relatively short haul flight to join the ship in Corfu made it viable. The Ship - I am not complete convert to cruising, having only taken three cruises previously over a 30 year period. In that time the World of cruising has changed considerably. I did have concerns when reading reviews about this ship (Discovery 2) with some reports suggesting it was poorly maintained. Those reporting such things could not be more wrong. The ship was in immaculate condition with teams working to ensure it remained so. For those that chose to look closely there were signs that Discovery 2, whilst new to TUI did have a 22 year previous history with Royal Caribbean, but you would need to be picky. The Cabin - We considered the cost of the upgrade to an Executive Suite reasonable. The suite was large enough for two twin beds, a sofa and two arm chairs and was well presented. The balcony was large enough to accommodate one lounger, two chairs and a table. The bath and shower were comfortable and well kept. Room Service - Room Service has a limited menu, but is fairly priced. Wines are a little expensive, but the mini bar is pretty empty, and there seems little objection to you filling it with your own wine bought at each port. Dining - Dining was relaxed, with no fixed meal times and a fairly forgiving dress code. Restaurant 47 (degrees) is the nearest you get for formal dining, with a menu that changes daily. The food is well presented, and whilst the menu is not vast there is something to suit most tastes. The key alternative is the buffet which is comprehensive but a little bit samey. There a few speciality restaurants that do not come as part of the all inclusive package. We only tried one and found it a very pleasant experience. Entertainment - Some reports on this ship can be quite critical of the Entertainment on this ship, the term 'Butlin's on the sea' being a common expression. Whilst my experience of cruising is limited I suspect all ships can be accused of this to some extent. On this cruise a number of artists featured that in my opinion were extremely talented. If something does not appeal to you, the ship is big enough to offer plenty of alternatives. The ship has two pools. The outdoor pool tends to be a bit of a free for all and can get crowded, whilst the indoor pool is very quiet and filled with people who probably would prefer to be sailing under a Cunard flag. All Inclusive and Fellow Passengers - Whilst it was autumn half term in some of the UK, there were very few families (at least with children of school age). The majority of passengers would be over 40, with the highest percentage being 50 plus or retired. TUI is the dominant package tour operator in the UK, and has successfully expanded its market to include the packaged cruise. The cruise is now an alternative option to the four-star all-inclusive hotel, only this hotel tends to move about. Needless to say the vast majority are hard working people looking to enjoy a hassle-free holiday, but there will always be the odd one that sees all-inclusive as an challenge to drink the bar dry, and the odd complainer, who I am sure makes the ship's reception staff worth every penny they are paid. Be aware of the term all-inclusive. Whilst fruit juices is free, carbonated drinks such as Coke are not ,which somewhat negates the term all-inclusive in my opinion. You can upgrade for £50 a week to a higher drinks package, but this turns out to be £100 a Cabin as both parties in a Cabin have to take it. This is unfair if, as we were, one of our party is to young to drink. Unless you have real appetite for cocktails the upgrade seems rather poor value for money. Internet - not fit for purpose. Needs upgrading. Read Less

The check in process was very quick and we were on board the ship very quickly. Our cases were taken onboard for us and were waiting outside our cabin for us. The Atlantic ocean for the first 2 days was very windy and rough and not that enjoyable and I was actually cold. You couldn't actually sit up on the deck as it was too windy and all the sun beds blew away. I had to take sea sickness pills the first few days which I have never done before on cruises. However the cruise was still very nice. The food and drink was excellent, no complaints at all. Plenty of choice at breakfast and lunch time and dinner in the evening in the restaurant was very nice. We enjoyed all the entertainment on the cruise throughout the day and evenings. There was only one dress up night where previously on other cruises we have been on there were 2 nights. The casino on board was very small which was a disappointment. Every Port we stopped at was enjoyable, literally had all day at each Port so could get on and off the ship as many times as you wanted throughout the day. I would definitely recommend this ship to friends and family and I probably would go on this ship again although we do prefer a bigger ship than this. Read Less

We choose this cruise solely because of the itinerary. We didn't want to have to use ship excursions to enjoy ourselves and this really did fit the bill. We were able to do our own thing at every port and enjoyed ourselves doing so - it was really easy. Balcony cabin 7600 was a good size and kept spotlessly clean by steward. Was pleasantly surprised by size of bathroom and shower. Weather was always good and it was nice to sit on balcony when you needed some quiet time. Lots of restaurant choice and overall we found the quality of the food to be very good. Surf n Turf and Kora La were both excellent but the food in 47 and Gallery47 was also of a high standard. We only had dinner in buffet on one occasion but main courses were limited, our fault as we went very late. SnackShak was very handy for a quick (small) lunch or breakfast and I managed to restrict myself to only one curry in Glasshouse at end of night. We had no problems getting a table for two and met some nice company at the tables near to us. We enjoyed the entertainment throughout the ship, some performers had more talent than others but they all worked so hard to put on good performances. Some of the shows were excellent and there was always something going on. The staff worked very hard and everyone we came into contact with was pleasant and helpful, special mention to Sari, Marlon and Miko who looked after us very well (apologies to the others I haven't mentioned, can't remember names). The ports were all good and easy to navigate without expensive excursions and we had plenty of time available to explore all of them. Only 2 sea days out of 14 which was great and meant there was no danger of ever being bored. We upgraded to premium all inclusive and were pleased with it. Don't think it was essential though but the basic AI choice was very good (i.e. Tanquery). Only one minor complaint related to slow service if you went to some bars. We overcame this by using waiter service, they soon got to know you and saved you queuing at bar. Overall we had a brilliant time and met some great company on several nights. Would love to do same ship and itinerary again. Read Less
