This was our first time cruising and we wanted a smaller or mid sized ship with a balcony. Discovery 2 fits that bill. My wife and I, both in our 60s, would thoroughly recommend this cruise. Cabin 7006 with balcony was excellent in every way. In particular it had plenty of power points. One USA, one European and three USBs, one under each wall light.. We ate largely in 47 degrees the main dining room and found both the service and food to be very good. We ate early, rarely after 7:15, when there were no queues, but did notice queues, sometimes long, after 8:00. Upstairs in 47 Degrees Italian was also very good and free. One night we ate in the Steakhouse at £30pp extra. Well worth it, superb food and service. We did note that early booking on day 1 of the cruise is vital as after Monday this restaurant was booked solid and operating a waiting list. We found that there were plenty of lifts and we never waited long at all. There were a fair number of disabled passengers with small buggies but they caused no problem and it would seem that this is a good ship and cruise for disabled people. We took an organised trip at every stop and enjoyed them all, although we felt two of them to be poorly organised by Marella. The guides, without exception, were very good. Dress code throughout is smart casual. Something women find easy and men in my experience find difficult to understand! Same comment also applies back home at my golf club. Dress to impress night, I wore a three piece suit. About 5% wore tuxedo - well done! 20% Jacket and tie, 75% jacket or no jacket and no tie. Some even wore jeans. Didn't bother us, perhaps it's a plus that on this ship you wear what you want, within reason. We would definitely cruise with Marella again and would choose a balcony cabin. We spoke with others and saw the interiors of outside and inside cabins and those who chose them loved them. Staff were universally excellent. We spoke to people from South America, West Indies, Philippines, etc and they were a joy to speak to and to have them serve us. We watched 4 shows in the large theatre where they bring waiter served drinks to your seat. We found the shows to be well put together and the performers did a good job. The theatre was packed for 2 shows a night. Embarkation (we were one hour late from Gatwick) and disembarkation were no problems. You do have to be out of your cabin by 8am on the final day and have packed suitcases in your hallway the previous night. Read Less

We were quite worried after reading previous reviews , however it turned out to be a very good cruise. Firstly the cons ( not many ) . As so many other reviews have highlighted they need more bar/wait staff in atrium/live room bars between 6-11pm this was the only negative review of service . ( PLEASE LISTEN MARELLA !!!! would have been 5 stars but for this !!!). Also the only other fault was that we felt some of the meat products ie burgers, cooked meats needed to be of a higher standard ( Think microwave burgers ! ). The pros , great flight and super transfer , embarcation all very well organised . The most friendly welcome ever ( previous ncl + celebrity cruise nowhere near as good in this respect). Virtually all the crew including officers very friendly ( one exception a surly barman in atrium bar ).Cabin cleaned very well by paul and charlie , lots of space and a comfortable bed.Food was generally very good and never waited long to be seated. Always managed to find a seat in islands. Something for everyone regards entertainment re dancing , bingo ,quizes , etc ( your never going to please everyone all the time as the ships passengers are a cross section of British society ).Fantastic itinery and some fairly priced excursions ( adriatic ). We thought this would be a one off cruise with marella but will now definatly book again. Go with a smile on your face and enjoy. Read Less

We chose the Adriatic cruise leaving from Corfu because of the itinerary. The staff in every department were really great & worked their socks off. The food was good, if a little repetitive. The Asian restaurant Kora La was absolutely fantastic - far & away the best food on the ship, & the service was great too. The entertainment was great - Benjamin Gillan & Paul Greenwood were really good. We enjoyed the bands as well. One point is that the Live Room was perhaps a bit small for the bands? Change it to a pub type bar, keep the acoustics in there, put the bands in the Venue. Cabin was small but fine, if a bit tired, bit the hair dryers were awful. They had hardly any power. Eva, our cabin steward, found me another which was more powerful but had the button you had to keep pressed down & it kept falling out of the socket. Bring your own, people! Bathroom was very well designed but would have been nicer with a solid surround in the shower. All in all a good trip without beg excitement. Read Less

hi all my family chose this cruise for my mum and nannas joint birthday. this is my first cruise and I thought I would be bored but I was wrong. the food drinks and staff were all excellent even the entertainment was great. the housekeeper fondrila and her team were amazing think that's how you spell her name. anyway I was impressed by everything. I would go again on this ship. the only things that bugged me was that by 9am the pool deak was packed and I felt closed in with so many people it was hard to get to the pool. also it took a while to get served at any indoor bar as only one person was working at a time which on week 2 of my trip was bad as there was twice as many people on board. also all the game activities such as mini golf or shuffleboard organised by the hosts were done before 4pm and as I had booked trips I couldn't join in which would have been nice. if you do decide to go you will enjoy it a lot there is plenty of food choice in the buffet but you only get little portions in the free restaurants its ok if your not fussy but look at the menu before you decide to go in and go before 7pm as the restaurants do get very busy Read Less

We travelled as a family with two children under 14 , on back to back cruises , the Adriatic Explorer and Iconic Islands. The itinery was brilliant including Venice and Santorini which we really wanted , hence choosing TUI on this occasion, having travelled with Royal Caribbean twice and Princess Cruises once before. * SHIP * The Discovery 2 is a great addition to the TUI fleet , and although refurbished is more than enough in quality for any average Brit traveller (as we are) who will not be disappointed. A good looking vessel. * DINING / FOOD * We used the Islands Buffet restaurant , and occasionally the Snack Shack. The food was good quality and varied. * CABIN * We had an outside cabin on level 2. The window was quite large , giving us all a great view of the scenery as we cruised along , well worth the small extra charge from an inside cabin. It was located near the rear of the ship , in a quiet position. We all slept very well indeed. There was enough space for a family , the beds for the kids dropped from the side walls. It was very clean and functional , although some of the furniture was aged with scratched draws. One kept falling off it's runner which was a bit annoying when accerssing things. The safe was spot on (although old), free of charge , accessed using a major credit card for the strip only. Not seen this type before , as I am used to tapping numbers in , but once I got used to it it was fine. I had no problems leaving valuables in there. * ENTERTAINMENT * One word , fantastic ! We went to all the shows in the Broadway Theatre. They were high quality and varied. It was clear a lot of effort had gone in to each performance. We also enjoyed other areas including The Venue , featuring an X factor finalist Andy. This was an unexpected level of quality. What a great singer - shame he didn't win ! The dance couple were amazing. The dance to the 'Bond Theme' left us all speechless. A big thank you to the entertainment team for making our cruise so enjoyable. * SERVICE * The cabin staff and bar staff/waiters were all super polite. Special thanks go to Janette, Alistair, Reymond, Mladen, Jorge and Malcolm - great people ! We had one complaint against a pool attendant who was not polite but unfriendly and confrontational in our opinion. Had this not occurred we would have given the cruise a 5 star rating. The complaint was handled eventually after several attempts thanks to the general manager Malcolm Chapple. TUI need to improve their complaint handling process to prevent unnecessary escalation to this level , and we have given this feedback to them in the hope other cruisers will not be impacted like we were after only a few hours into a 14 day cruise - this spoilt the 'holiday feel' somewhat for a few days. * DRINKS * The all inclusive drinks package is more than enough. Good draught beers/ciders to include John Smiths , Fosters , Strongbow , and bottled to include Becks , Guiness , Corona , Peroni (nice touch TUI) , many cocktails/shorts ,cola ,orange juice and much more. No need to buy the premium package at all in our opinion. * EXCURSIONS * Very very expensive. Recommend 'do it yourself' , haggle with taxi drivers etc as we did. S U M M A R Y A good quality cruise which was very enjoyable , and so nearly a 5 star rating ! Read Less

Have cruised with Thomson for years. Tui/Marella have taken over with a marked loss of quality. The finesse has gone. Restaurant menu reduced from 5 courses to three. Fewer choices on the menu. Islands restaurant - many food choices were low or had run out. Poor choice of late-night snacks. Fewer cabin stewards - never did meet mine! The ship was good - the service was poor/ Long waits at the bars - disinterested service. No interest at all in passenger safety except for the boat drill. Greasy chips spilled on outside stairs - reported to the pool patrol - no interest. No action taken - slip hazard. Few officers about - no passenger contact. We were not made to feel welcome or valued. Trip problem - PA on the coach broke - 30 minute delay while they tried to fix it. Failed. 90 minutes queueing in full sun in a coach park for a seven-minute row-boat ride. The delay meant that no refreshment break was available till 4pm. As diabetics this was unsafe and the courier was not interested. A thoroughly forgettable holiday. poor value for money. As a result we have decided, after many years with Thomson cruises, to look elsewhere. Read Less

We went as part of a large family group (6 of us in total), two parents and then two couples in our twenties. My parents mostly go with P&O (10th cruise) however they were really pleasantly surprised. Overall we had a great time. Really good food, bar service was sometimes slow when they were very busy but never more than 5 mins wait. I will say that the Buffet restaurant (Islands), whilst the quality of the food is very good, the place is terribly dated, busy, confusing layout. Awful. We only ate there once, and much preferred the MDR and other restaurants. We tried all the 'pay extra' restaurants (Kora La twice) and have to say they were all really great quality with exceptional service by genuinely nice staff members. The only real negative area was Destination Services. On the first day we went to the excusion presentation in the show lounge and ended up walking out as it was so poor. A guy from Liverpool was 'presenting' - actually just reading from a script. There was no interest, passion, and if I never hear the phrase 'its a realllyyyy lovelyyyyy trip' it'll be too soon. We went on four excursions (already booked before leaving the UK), one of which was terrible, but all were very badly planned - where are your staff to check people onto buses? They were also very rude, not to me personally, but I witnessed on two occasions them being really rude to other passengers. If it was me I'd replace the lot. Gym could do with a refurb, but nice Sauna and Steam room area to use. Overall a great holiday was had by all of us. Read Less

We travelled with our two children and have been on a number of cruises. This cruise we booked the Grand Suite which was a treat and quite expensive, but we were happy to pay the price for the expected luxury. my main issue is the customer service at TUI as I never really complain and with this cruise I emailed the travel agent whilst on our holiday who placed the complaint for us. For the entire cruise we had to use the public toilets as our suite wouldn't flush, they came everyday to try and fix it. The first three evening we try to eat in firstly the inclusive restaurants but 2 hours waits due to the volume at what they called peak times 7pm - 8pm and when trying to go to the pay for restaurants they were all fully booked up until the 9.30pm - 10.0 pm slots which was late for the kids. I went to customer services on board and was told that " I should have planned my time better as soon as I boarded" which made my blood boils made me write to the travel agent and request for me to see a manager. I hate kicking off but I had, had a enough I had paid many thousands for this holiday and could get to eat. The manager did apologise and said that there had been a change of policy with regards to sitting, it was basically a first come first served and same with the booking the paid restaurants which meant if you didn't know this as we didn't, all the bookings places were taken up for the week by people who knew. The other issue it would take 20 - 30 minutes to get served at the bars, whatever time of day due to the lack of staff. This upset many customers, again following complaints it was told that it was because of a change over of staff from the different cruises. This was very frustrating for many people. We upgraded to the premium drinks package, which was only £50.00 each, however the ship ran out on the first night of many of the premium drinks so we had to drink the drinks that was included, so that was a bit of waste but not much financially, annoying with everything else we was experiencing. As I said I have an issue with TUI customer services because the send an auto reply to the complaint email saying they would get back within 28 days, they didn't so I chased it and received a very feeble response which I replied to and never got a further response. TUI do not care so that is me done with them, I unfortunately have paid for 2 more holidays with them which amount to in excess of £17000, but that is my journey done with this uncaring company. I understand things go wrong and it happens and I have never had cause to do a written complaint and the way TUI responded I will simply spend my money elsewhere in future and not that they are bothered but they have lost a customer who holidays very frequently. THEIR LOSS !! This is an element response I received " I have taken the opportunity to read through your complaint and have noted all the points you have raised in regards to the restaurant service and suite toilet. I am sorry to read that you were unhappy with the restaurant’s service and the two wines had ran out. I can understand how upsetting this would have been for you as this was not what you expected, I do apologise for the inconvenience caused to you on this occasion. I would like to inform you that all the restaurants are a third party contract and we are unable to have much influence over it." Read Less

This was our second cruise on Discovery 2 and will be our last. Firstly the positives, check in and getting to ship and cabin was easy and reasonably quick, we did end up sitting in a bus at the cruise terminal for about 30 mins but it was a busy period. The cabin staff are fantastic and can’t do enough for you and the balcony cabin we were given was clean, tidy and exactly what we booked and expected. The ship itself is impressive and has plenty bars, restaurants and social areas, these are generally clean and have attentive staff to look after guests. In my opinion there is a severe lack of seating in the “live and Atrium” bars and these areas fill to capacity very quickly making it near impossible to get a drink at the bars. Bar staff don’t appear to understand queuing and tend to serve those that shout loudest first and this can be frustrating after a long wait. The two main restaurants 47 and Gallery 47 are superb and the food was excellent as are the staff working there, sadly the same can’t be said of “islands” restaurant, the food there is buffet style self service, often look warm and tasted as if it had been prepared a long time earlier. More concerning was seeing people pawing food with hands and not using utensils to put food onto plates, this unhygienic trait really put us off eating there. The crew really try to encourage hand cleanliness and there are hand sterilisation points all over the ship especially in toilets which are used by most but unfortunately not all which on a ship is concerning. Entertainment....World Cup...no thanks but that’s what we got on our day at sea and also in Croatia. Decks 4,9 and 10 social areas were awash with painted football supporters, boozed up and behaving like louts. Verbal abuse, threatening and general intimidation are not what we paid for or expected. I along with 64 others did make our feelings known to front desk staff to no avail. Ports of call were superb and all within easy reach of the ship, the itinerary of the cruise was fantastic for us and allowed us to visit many interesting and beautiful places. In summary, excellent ship, excellent staff, reasonable food, plenty to drink if you don’t mind queuing and fantastic itinerary. Unfortunately Marella let many guests down by allowing football to be shown on every social deck leaving non interested guests no where to go to escape it. Corfu Airport is prehistoric and a disgrace considering how long tourists have visited the island, high time Thompson and other tour operators put pressure on the airport operator to seriously upgrade facilities. Tui Discovery 2 Sailed 11th May 2018 Adriatic Explorer Cruise. This was our sixth cruise with Marella Cruises ( previously Thomson) and once again good value for money. There were plenty of restaurants to choose from with a good choice of menus but our favourite was the Glass House. Lovely and relaxing area with own pool and at the rear an adult only sun terrace with rattan sunbeds and cocoon chairs. During the day they served a light lunch here which was excellent and this continued in the evening when they served Tapas, Pizzas and Hot Stone dishes before 9.30 and curries and snacks after this time until late. The staff in the Glass House we found the friendliest on the ship. The main restaurants had a pager system in the evening which allowed you to have a drink in the bar whilst waiting for a table. We did notice however that when we were eventually called to the restaurant there were plenty of empty tables so why the wait? We enjoyed all the ports we visited but were disappointed not to visit Split which had to be cancelled due to an engine malfunction in Venice and therefore losing a day of the cruise. This was an all inclusive cruise and we feel compared to the other Thompson cruises we have been all this may have been the reason for the customer service not being as good. Some of the staff were curt and unfriendly and didn’t seem to have the same team spirit as the other Thompson ships. Overall a good cruise visiting some wonderful places. Read Less

Out first impressions when we boarded the Tui Discovery 2 cruise ship was good. We went to our balcony cabin and was pleased with the cabin and balcony. The 2 gentlemen that serviced our room which was number 7040 was very good and everything was clean and tidy every day. On the first day of our cruise we were at sea all day and night consequently everybody that was cruising was on board the ship for 24 hours. Each evening we toured round the various bar/entertainment arears and found it very hard to find 2 seats and table to sit and enjoy a drink. Every venue was extremely loud and the only place you could actually sit and hear yourself speak was the pool bar. The first time we visited this bar we got our drinks and when looking at the glasses, which were understandably reusable plastic glasses as it was the pool area we found that the glasses were badly scratched and looked dirty we asked for 2 different glasses but these were in the same state, so every time we went to this area to have a drink we took with us 2 glasses from the restaurant which were clean. We docked into a different port every morning and found that you had to pay for the shuttle bus to take you from the port to the town this was £6 pounds return. Cruises are not a cheap holiday and we feel it was extremely bad that Thompson charged people to be taken from each port to the towns. The food was ok, we have had a lot better in all inclusive hotels but it was ok each day. Because of our experience on the Tui Discovery 2 ship we have decided that we will not be going on any more cruises which is sad as if our experience had been a good one we would have booked at least 2 cruises next year.
