We chose this cruise primarily for itinerary as we wanted to start in Paris. We did a pre-extension on our own in Paris in order to see the beaches of Normandy, where my father in law spent the week after D-Day. We also did a Viking post-excursion 4 day trip in Switzerland. Embarkation, disembarkation, and all transfers were run exceptionally smoothly. Viking has a well oiled machine. Food sensitivities were excellently handled by the Maître D and dining staff throughout the cruise (was able to pre-order lunch and dinner at breakfast). Staff were very attentive at most times. Viking is much hyped on much social media so perhaps our expectations were heightened but we found the food to be nice but not exceptional. Dinner took 2 hours as expected however there would be 10-15 minute gaps between removal of first course dishes and arrival of 2nd course. Rooms were well kept. The included excursions were generally well run. Cochem and cruising the Rhine Gorge were the highlights for me. It was a first river cruise - I loved it, the quiet lap of water, the lack of swells, the novelty of locks. My husband, however, didn't feel there was enough of interest in the small port towns. Totally personal preference. Post-cruise trip to the Alps was delightful - despite rain and fog on our two attempts at the high Alps. Overall impression: well run ship and line; typical cruise industry food, eager to please staff, slow pace of service for dinner in dining room, able to handle special requests well. Read Less

Itinerary sounds good, but that is only if you would enjoy an 8hr bus ride from Paris to the ship in Germany. The first morning after eating a tainted breakfast and between 4-5hrs later, I came downwith the worst case of food poisoning anyone has ever had. Viking has decided not to include any medical personal in their crew, so I layed in my cabin for the next 3hrsrapidly dehydrating. When we docked in a very tiny village I was taken by ambulanceto a very small German hospital. No one at the hospital spoke English, and no one fromViking accompanied me to offer assistance. After hours of treatment, they were able tostabilize me somewhat. Seeing Viking was about to leave that port, rather than be stranded in this tiny village we opted to return to the ship. As a result of the Viking provided food poisoning, I was so sick and weak, I was unable toleave our cabin for the balance of the trip, or participate in any activities. Let us talk about the cabin. This cabin was presented as the best cabin on the ship. Thatwould be true if you prefer old tatered furniture and riding above the droning of the propelers not to mention the smell of gas when the windows were open. These werethe joys we experienced on a $23,000. cruise. Since our return, we have spent at least 6 phone calls with Viking seeking compensation. So far, we have been offered a discount on a future Viking cruise. REALLY!!!!! In summary, many others on the cruise commented on the poor quality of the foodand their overall displeasure with the cruise in general. Cruising can be expensive andsuffering the way I did at the hands of an unresponsive cruise line is hardly a good value. Read Less

We chose this cruise because the itinerary looked very interesting, and we got to start in Paris and end in Prague. We traveled with another couple. We're all between 50-60 years old and are very active. My husband and I traveled with Avalon a few years ago for the Romantic Rhine cruise and based on that experience, we told our friends we would almost never be on the ship because we would be docked right outside the towns we were visiting and anticipated spending a lot of time checking out the sites. Well, I don't know if it's Viking or just this itinerary, but we spent very little time in any charming cities. Viking relied very heavily on bus transportation. Also, two nights, we docked at charming little towns, but we arrived after 6:00 p.m., and nothing was open unless you just wanted to eat and drink. One of our stops was supposed to be Koblenz, but we never stepped foot in Koblenz. We docked a few miles away in Winningen. Also, at our last stop, Bamberg, we were at an industrial dock several miles outside of the city, with nothing within walking distance. I have to believe Viking either has too many ships and not enough docks, or they are selling their dock space to other cruise lines and docking at cheaper locations. The good: Transfers to and from the airport were flawless. The scenery while cruising was beautiful. The food was delicious, and the service and staff were great. The tours were well-organized with excellent guides. The bad: Too much time on the ship sailing. There just isn't enough to do on board for that much sailing, plus the upper deck is closed the entire time on the Main due to low bridges, so shuffleboard and putt-putt aren't even available. The stops were very rushed, and we never had any time in the towns to explore. Finally the docking locations were terrible, resulting in too much reliance on bus transportation. Below is a synopsis of our stops: Our trip started in Paris, and the transfer from the airport was flawless. We stayed at the La Meridian Etoile. I've read other reviews that didn't like the hotel, but we all thought it was fine. It was a 10 minute walk to the Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Elysees. The provided city tour was very good. The guide was excellent. Traffic was pretty bad, so we didn't have much time at any stops. The last stop was the Eiffel Tower, so we left the group and walked back to the hotel (about a 30 minute walk). We also did an evening boat tour we booked through the concierge and really enjoyed that. On our way to Trier, we stopped at Luxembourg. The city tour was very nice, but we had trouble hearing our guide. It's a beautiful city. We also stopped at the American Cemetery and Memorial, which was excellent. Being retired military, we were grateful to be able to tour it. Embarkation in Trier was very smooth. The ship was clean, and our room, although very small, was comfortable. We had a stateroom with the French balcony. The bathroom was very nice. Even though it was hot, I enjoyed the heated floor and the anti-fog mirrors. The city tour of Trier was excellent, and we had a little time to roam on our own prior to sailing. Our next stop was Bernkastel-Kues. We arrived a little late, so everything was closed by the time we left the ship to walk around. It is a beautiful little town, but there really wasn't anything to do, so we just walked around and took some pictures. Next was Cochem. The walking tour of the town and the tour of the Reichsburg Castle was excellent. We maybe had an hour to tour around on our own, but all-in-all, this was a very nice stop. Our next stop was supposed to be Koblenz, but we ended up docking at Winningen instead around 6:00 p.m. Again, this was a quaint, pretty little town, but there was nothing to do after 6:00 p.m. except eat or drink. We walked around a bit just to get a little exercise. The next morning we caught a bus to Marksburg Castle. Our ship actually arrived on time, but another Viking ship's tour arrived late, so they went ahead of us, so we waited around outside in 90 degree heat for over an hour. When Viking's tour groups are interfering with each other, I do believe this is another indicator that Viking has overextended themselves. The tour itself was excellent, and I really enjoyed seeing the collection of armor and the torture chamber. We took a long bus drive to get to our next stop, Heidelberg. The city tour was very interesting, and we enjoyed eating lunch with one of the University students, but we tried to cut that a little short, so we could have at least a little time to shop and look around. After about 1/2 hour of free time, we toured the Castle. Our tour guide, Charles, was quite interesting and an excellent guide. Amazingly, we actually docked in Wurzburg and didn't have to take a long bus ride to get anywhere. The Bishop's Residenz was amazing....do not miss it! Some people on our tour said they thought it was more beautiful than Versailles. It was worth seeing in spite of the extreme heat. The tour of the town was excellent as well, but again, we only had less than an hour to look around before having to return to the ship. For Bamberg, we docked at a grain elevator and took a bus into town. The town was beautiful, and the tour guide was excellent. After very little free time, we took a bus back to the ship, docked by a rock quarry outside of town. On our bus ride to Prague, we stopped at Nuremberg. This was part bus tour and part walking tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and extremely entertaining. We had just enough free time to eat lunch and buy a ginger cookie before boarding the bus for Prague. Our arrival at the Hilton in Prague was flawless. Viking has definitely figured out how to handle large groups arriving all at once. The hotel was excellent and within walking distance of downtown. The walking tour the next day was also excellent. The city is beautiful. The architecture is amazing! We did the optional Lobkowicz Palace tour, and we all really enjoyed it. Read Less

We always wanted to take a river cruise with friends and the Paris to Prague trip satisfied all our desires with stops that we wanted. We had been on several ocean cruises, but this cruise, this ship, and the Viking crew, greatly surpassed all others. Why? First, everything was included. No cost for any shore excursions. Second, the cabin was better and roomier without an additional expense. Third, the smaller ship was more convenient and made getting on and off much easier. Fourth, the dining was fantastic and included beer and wine with every meal. Fifth, the crew was fantastic, especially Bojan, the cruise director, and the tour guides, all local, were exceptional. What we didn't have, like elaborate on board entertainment and cameras in our faces every time we moved and extra expense for shore excursions, we didn't miss at all. We liked Viking service so much that we have booked a Viking Ocean Cruise for 2020. Read Less

In celebration of our 50th Anniversary my husband and I went on the Paris to the Alps Viking Cruise and we had the time of our life. Everything was so well orchestrated and taken care of there were no worries for us. We were met at the airport in Paris by the Viking director Boris and he was there for us from the time we landed in Europe until we left the Kvasir for Switzerland. He took care of every need and question. He was great. The ship was beautiful and so were the buses. Our cabin was very comfortable and clean. Our room attendant Mr. Slaviska took very good care of us. The dining was exquisite. Good thing they didn’t weigh us when we boarded. So many choices. Our servers Ina, Archie, Judit, Jefferson and Wilfredo saw to our every need. The food was to die for. I loved it when the chef gave a little “talk” before dinner about what he had prepared. The entertainment was good. We enjoyed the talks and history Boris gave every evening about the next days tour. The ports and excursions were fantastic. The guides were so knowledgeable. We loved hearing about the history. Our post trip to Switzerland was like a dream . It was so beautiful riding the Glacier Express to Zermatt. Raphael was a wonderful guide he took great care of everyone and gave us a lot of hints and information on what we can see and do on our free time. We would go again on a Viking cruise in a heartbeat. Read Less

The Viking Tour company handles everything for the travelers. They provide air service and pay for coach class. When you land, there is a representative to pick you up and take you to a hotel or the boat. They look after your luggage and the check-in process. They will explain all activities and schedules. You are free to take advantage of this or go off on your own, as long as you get back to the boat on time (they won't wait). Land tours use very comfortable buses with good legroom, large windows and storage for luggage and bags. There is plenty of cold bottled water and even an airplane style bathroom. A local tour guide will lead you through all the interesting sights of the off-boat excursions. Everyone is given an audio receiver to hear live narrative from the guide. They know a tremendous amount of detail and history about the places you visit. They give very entertaining descriptions of local history and culture. The head tour director for the Alsvin, Marianne, our Viking spokesperson for the entire trip, was exceptional. She presented all activities, answered questions, entertained the travelers and was a nurturing parent to all. We miss her already. On board: Viking River Tours use modern, high-tech longboats. They accommodate 180 passengers and about 50 crew. They are low and narrow to fit under bridges and tight waterways. On board is a main dining room and two smaller dining areas, one inside at the bow and one in the open. All are roomy and comfortable. There is a library, bar, lounge, information center and gift shop. The top (sun) deck has a putting green, shuffleboard, herb garden and walking track. It has lounge chairs, both under cover and in the open. Meals are fine restaurant quality. For breakfast or lunch, you can choose from the buffet, order from a menu or both. Dinner menu choices include local cuisine or a chef special. Usually there are two or three different selections from each and you can mix and match. Then there are three or four dessert selections. With lunch and dinner is a selection of complimentary house wines, beers, coffee or soft drinks and of course, water. Bar drinks are extra, unless you purchase the "Silver Service" package. Nobody loses weight on this cruise. But with all the hiking, we didn't gain either. The staff and crew are exceptionally friendly and diligent. They will ask your name and room number (for special drinks and tours) once, then remember it for the rest of the cruise. At dinner be prepared to be entertained and served by the wait staff who are really interested in you and what you like to eat and drink. There's no rush, but you don't have to wait long for service either. Between meals, they will make sure you are comfortable, whether in the lounge or on the sun deck. After a land tour they welcome you back on board with drinks and a snack. Read Less

The Cities of Light itinerary is different from other Viking cruises. We stayed in a hotel in Paris along with our fellow cruisers for two nights, before taking a bus through Luxembourg to Trier where we embarked our ship. All the traveling was very smoothly orchestrated. Viking had a private car take us from the airport to the hotel. The hotel was situated a stone's throw away from the Eiffel Tower and served a great breakfast in the morning. While the bus ride to the ship was long, our cruise director was very entertaining, and it was nice to be able to walk around Luxembourg City for a few hours. The Viking Alsvin was a beautiful ship, well maintained, and it was a great home-away-from-home. We splurged for the veranda stateroom so we could have a balcony to sit out on. However, we had some rather loud, chatty neighbors that ruined the peacefulness of sailing down the river and really, the best views were on the top deck. Otherwise, our room was very comfortable, quiet, with plenty of storage. Viking's food is top notch. My husband and I both have dietary restrictions and the Maitre'd sought us out every morning to make arrangements for lunch and dinner. Our meals were always delicious. And the waitstaff are just the nicest people around! They really work hard to make sure you enjoy yourself! Variety of entertainment was lacking. Mostly there's piano music every night, but that's about it. We enjoyed the movie selections on our cabin's television and that was good enough for us. What we like most about cruising, though, is seeing the ports and this cruise had some fabulous stops! Bernkastel, Cochem, and Nuremberg were absolutely amazing! Viking's included tours taught us a bit about the history and culture of each town and were very enjoyable. My only real complaint is that because the itinerary is so packed and the ship needs to clear a number of lochs, the amount of time we had at each port was more limited than other Viking river cruises. We had an excellent time and would certainly go on another Viking river cruise in the future. Read Less

We had always wanted to see the Swiss Alps and parts of France and Germany. Paris was wonderful to explore and set us all up for an exciting time abroad. Our trip from Dallas to Toronto to Paris went smoothly. The air bookings were fine, however, the end of our trip was not up to Viking standards, and I will touch upon that at the end. The arrangements were impeccable as was the communication around all the trip itself. We appreciated the very professional, informative all-inclusive cruise documents which included the "Before You Go" introduction at the beginning of the brochure. That whole brochure was fantastic. Not only was it informative, but it was a wonderful way to get us excited about going! Dining was simply a wonderful experience. The food was fabulous, the wines were delightful. We just cannot say enough about the exceptional dining experience. The ship itself was very, very clean and well-maintained. The upper deck gave us a lovely view of the Mosel and Rhine, however, the chairs were often taken under the canopy and we did not want to sit in the direct sun when temperatures were in the 90's! The tours were wonderful. Our guides were great and we loved their expertise and personal interjections of facts. The morning tours were great before the very high heat took over! Coming back to the ship was like coming home again. The staff was so friendly and we were greeted with a wet towel or a cool drink. Such a nice and unexpected touch! The other guests on-board were having a good time, as we were. A big plus was the wine with lunch and dinner. We appreciated that being included in the price rather than charging each time. The wines were excellent, too, by the way. We actually tried to find them in the states. We participated in many of the tours and each was wonderful - our favorites were Palace of Versailles, Notre Dame the lake excursions, the cog wheel train up the alps and the lake shore excursions. Our trip was lovely except for the END at the Renaissance Hotel in Switzerland. We left our bags outside our hotel room, as requested and they were loaded onto the coach to take us to the airport. The only time the carry on was out of my sight was from the hotel hallway to the coach. Unfortunately, when I opened up my carry on at home, my corporate computer shoulder bag (back with silver buckles) was missing out of the top of my blue carry-on. I was disappointed that this had happened. I did write to Viking but never heard a word back from Viking. There was no computer in the bag, only some inexpensive jewelry, about 50 euro, incidentals and some work documents. As I noted, I did report this to Viking directly on an e-mail but I did not ever receive a reply from anyone, which seemed unusual. Also, the Renaissance hotel was not up to Viking standards. We had one towel for the two of us and had requested a towel from our hotel room that first evening. We ended up sharing a towel and never had a facecloth. No one ever came up with a new towels. The towel hanging in the bathroom was also dirty looking. We just think Viking should be aware of this since Viking had treated us so well and had such high standards of excellence in all that they did on the entire cruise - from quality brochures to fine dining, to intelligent guides and tours, to spot-on travel arrangements. Additionally, and unfortunately, the flight out of Switzerland was delayed which in turn made us miss our connecting flight in the States. We ended up sitting in Newark, NJ for over seven hours trying to get a flight out of New Jersey to Dallas, Texas. That was very disappointing and we were very, very tired. Viking tours are wonderful and we would love, love, love to go on another one some day. Our only wish is that we had started years ago and could keep going back for more! Thank you for a most wonderful, celebratory, memorable, educational, very-organized delightful time with my dear husband of 45 years! Read Less

We decided to sail with Viking on the Cities of Light cruise on the recommendation of friends we had talked to about Viking. The only caution I may have is to say that this is not a cruise for children. We had never travelled in Europe before, but we were comfortable the entire time. We selected a veranda suite which was fantastic! Enjoyed sitting on the veranda in the evening watching all the sites along the river. The ports of call we visited were very interesting and enjoyable, and the tours were fantastic with great guides. I could never say enough in praise of the ship staff, we could not ask for better, they were so attentive!! Our tour director was nothing short of super! Food and drink on board was always varied and very well prepared, delicious!! All in all, Viking does a great job of taking care of their customers, and offer a fantastic experience. We enjoyed the time so much, we are going again on the Grand European tour in 2020, can't wait!! Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed the pre-cruise extension of 4 days in Paris. Then sailing along the Mosel river was beautiful with the many vineyards. This cruise also included the Rhine river which has more river traffic than the Mosel but also has the beautiful scenery of many castles. Unlike another Viking River Cruise that we had taken a couple years ago, this cruise was had a much older demographic of passengers (average age was 70+) and some had very limited mobility. There were several with severe health issues and I questioned why they would even attempt this type of trip. Because of this, we felt that the shore excursions were a little too slow paced for us (we are 60 and very active). Viking service and staff are top notch and the boat was only 1 year old so very, very nice. I would have liked to have more entertainment offered in the evenings after dinner. Overall very good cruise but will look for something more active for our next trip. Read Less

It had been about 14 years since our last river cruise on Viking. We chose this cruise to celebrate my wife's birthday in Paris and our Anniversary on the cruise. the vessel and crew were first rate. No complaints. Our cabin was on the main deck which we both liked, since we could board the vessel and walk directly to our cabin without having to negotiate stairs. I liked the heated floors and mirror in the bathroom. The food was very good. Plenty to eat and a good variety. We took the drink package for the simplicity of having a cocktail or glass of wine without having to sign for each drink order. The shore excursions were well-planned and organized. We loved Cochem and the othertowns and cities that we visited. Paris was beautiful. Prague was very interesting. We will take another river cruise with Viking sometime in the next 2 years. We met some friends on the ship and we were able to meet them for meals and make arrangements to sit with them. The hotels that we stayed in Paris and Prague were first class and it was helpful to have the Viking staff there to answer any questions and offer suggestions on tours and sights to see during non tour hours. While traveling by bus to Tier, our bus developed mechanical problems and we had to wait for another bus to pick us up and continue our trip to the ship. The delay was not long but the next day, we received a bottle of champagne for our delay. Viking did not have to do this. Read Less

Cabaret show in Paris prior to actual river cruise was very entertaining. Room was excellent and we enjoyed the veranda. Ship was very very clean and well maintained. Staff was always helpful and courteous. Information provided about history and cultural was very informative and interesting. Wife managed to continue tour even after spraining ankle at Louve in Paris on first day of trip. Enjoyed the excursions in small towns but always need more time for shopping in each of the ports visited. We would definitely suggest this tour to out friends. When family members asked us to join them on the Paris-Zurich tour in April, we decided to give this a try. We were absolutely thrilled with the organization of the cruise and the wonderful service from all support staff. There was just enough organized time balanced with time on your own. The meals were outstanding, along with the attentive and friendly wait staff. We enjoyed the nightly entertainment and the informative sessions on the boat. Although our land tours were wonderful our time spent on the ship was not so great. Our balcony had numerous spiders and their webs. When we first asked for the crew to clean the balcony we were told "it can't be helped as the ship docks under trees in some ports". After a couple of days complaining the crew finally began cleaning the balcony each day. We were unable to enjoy our balcony during cruising for at least 3 of the 7 days. The meals were not as nice as our previous cruises either. The wait staff were fantastic as always except the staff that supposedly help you at the airport. Unlike our other Viking cruises the staff did not assist our group with checking in for our flights or providing directions to the appropriate counters. Even though this Viking cruise was not the best we will most likely book another Viking cruise (possibly an ocean cruise) because our other Viking cruises had nice, friendly an caring staff who provided us with nothing but wonderful memories. "We have always toyed with the idea of a European River Cruise, but never thought we could afford it. We have always wanted to see Paris, but thought we could never afford it. We have always wanted to visit Prague, but thought we could never afford it. When we discovered that Viking offered a Cities of Light cruise, we couldn't pass it up - and we could afford it! We started our cruise in Paris, where we opted for a two day extension. Viking was so organized that we knew what tours they were providing us several months in advance. Therefore, we were able to optimize our time there and take some extra excursions on our own prior to the included tours. This was great, and allowed us to do much more on our own. We toured the Catacombs, and the Eiffel Tower at night! On our way to embarkation in Trier, Germany, we stopped in Luxembourg for a nice visit to the country and the American Cemetery, where Gen Patton in buried. As a retired US Navy officer, my wife and I were so appreciative for this side trip. Upon boarding the ship, we were greeted by a smiling, happy, pleasant, warm and gracious staff. Everyone from the room stewards, dining staff, deck hands, captain and of course the cruise director, Bujorn were top notch. Everyone spoke excellent English, and could not do enough to ensure you were happy at all times. The room was spacious enough for the two of us, and we loved the french balcony, where we would sit during the evenings and watch the countryside drift by. The room had ample receptacles for 120 volt devices. The dining was excellent, and included healthy choices at each meal. The tours were well organized, and most enjoyable. We loved the voicebox that was provided that allowed all members of the group to hear the tour guide without having to be at the front of the pack. All the guides spoke excellent English, and we most knowledgeable in their presentations of their cities What fun we had. We really did not participate in the on board entertainment, as we were usually too tired from the daily activities. We did talk to other guests, and heard that the activities were quite good and informative and entertaining. We thought this would be our one and only visit to Europe, but we enjoyed it so much, that we have booked a British Isle Cruise on a Viking Ocean Liner for July 2019. We can't wait, and are already looking at tours for this cruise. We would recommend Viking to anyone and everyone. Read Less

Stories of an excellent trip with Viking are true. Paris to Zurich with pre-cruise in Paris and post-cruise in Geneva. Have not seen such personal care, tight scheduling, no issues with transportation, and every staff member, and tour guide and driver, were competent and friendly. Program Director Erna on the pre-cruise and cruise was outstanding. Program Director Annick on the post-cruise was also outstanding. They both took care of the group with patience and vast experience in the travel industry. Viking has gems in both of these gracious and helpful ladies. The Captain and crew did everything in a competent and friendly manner. Food was of high quality and the menu was quite varied. Had cabin 320 Veranda stateroom. Room steward Tyron did a superb job. Many table mates had the drink package, however we did not, and were still happy with the wine/beer included at meals, We did purchase a few drinks outside the meals and may make one rethink the drink package. Hotel accommodations, with the exception of the Zurich Renaissance (location and amenities), were very nice. The audiovox is an excellent item that we had on tours for the individual tour guides to keep in touch with their own group. The Viking Air Department was very helpful and another good value. This cruise was our second river cruise (first time 6 years ago on Peter Dielmann), and we will river cruise again. Read Less

We especially liked all of the UNESCO heritage sites and the wine tasting opportunities. We met some amazing people, primarily because we got to see them in an intimate setting throughout the cruise. In fact, we’re cruising with people we met on this cruise again. They have become very good friends. The staff was amazing! They perform multiple duties because it is a very small ship compared to ocean cruisers. They were excellent at all their different jobs. From beginning to end we were pampered and taken care of. We lack for nothing, and didn’t have to purchase anything extra for this trip. It is a bit expensive, but it is worth the money. We still talk about this trip to our friends frequently. We signed up for one twice as long a year later. We are looking forward to cruising with biking again and again. Read Less

I chose this cruise so my husband would have a very nice introduction into Europe. So, I chose it for the ports and land tours. We arrived in Pairs and stayed at the Pullman Eiffel Tower and explored Paris (!) both day and night. We did some on our own and also took the Highlights of Paris tour and then the Montmartre tour with the funniest and knowledgeable Janice. She was absolutely delightful, We then boarded a bus and traveled to Luxembourg and saw the American WWII Cemetery and then on to Trier Germany where we met with the Viking Hild. We cruised the Mozelle and Rhine Rivers by an expert captain and crew. Our Cruise Director Carla was ever so attentive to our stay and excursions. She was so kind and caring. The food was amazing. We also loved dancing to a wonderful Pianist Cezar. You would think we would be tired after sightseeing, but Cezar had us up dancing. Service and cleanliness impeccable. The people at the ports were delightful and our tour guides were so well educated to the area. I liked that you could do all the excursions or just be on your own. We so enjoyed Germany especially Mainz, Spyer and Cochem. We sailed to Strasbourg France - again amazing. Our final cruise stop was Bazel Switzerland. Amazing. We took the option tour of the Alps which was well worth it. We also cruised the lake in Zurich. Travel plans including plane travel, arrival,pick-up and disembarkation were so sooth. Again - Amazing. From the travel person assisting with the reservation on to the cruise and home. So personalized. I loved the volume of passengers. We made great friends and memories. I did not feel like a number. Amazing. My husband so loved Europe and Viking that we already are planning on our next trip soon! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we have never been to Europe and we were very intrigued by Paris and Prague. Germany was just something in between that we had very little knowledge of or expectations of. After exploring Paris (amazing) we were bussed to Luxembourg then to Germany to board our ship. We visited the cemetery where Patton was buried with a very knowledgeable local guide. We spent 8 days traveling through Germany with local guides at each stop. The tours were all fantastic and the sights stunning. One day, we sat on the upper deck of the ship sipping cocktails with a nice breeze on our faces, while our awesome ship director Petra came over the loudspeaker to inform us a little about the castles we were passing on the left and right. We LOVED Germany and hearing about the places we stopped from enthusiastic local guides made it that much better. We two other couples that we bonded with and had meals with and a lot of laughs with. I don't have any complaints at all. The staff onboard were fun friendly and very accommodating. Our room was cleaned daily. The bar and restaurant staff were super fun and professional. We especially liked Marlon. Petra was top notch as our ship director. Read Less

My husband and I traveled with another couple. We added the two extra nights in Paris which I would highly recommend. We had a wonderful time. The tours, towns, buses, food, entertainment, and overall service was fantastic. I only have two complaints. When you book the extra nights through Viking, their price is more than double the actual price of the hotel. Lastly, they need to allow more time in between connecting flights. Paris airport is huge, ad 90 minutes between flights is not enough time. These are two minor complaints. With that being said, I would gladly travel with Viking again. With the exception of one tour guide, all of the included tours and guides were very informative. The staff were always helpful and friendly. We enjoyed every minute on the boat. Lots of food with a great selection. Great beer and wine during happy hour and with dinner. The room was spacious and kept spotless. The Program Director had a wicked sense of humor and kept things lively. This was probably the best vacation I have ever taken. We were constantly on the go. There is so much to see. Read Less

We liked the route starting with two days in Paris and ending with two days in Prague. In between we cruised the beautiful Main, Moselle and Rhine rivers. For North Americans I would recommend arriving a day early to recover from jet lag. Every day on the boat we stopped at a small town that was invariably picturesque and very old where we were met by a local guide to show us around. The rivers traveled along were fairly narrow so there were always things to see while cruising. We had seen Viking ads on tv and liked the look of the boat, we really didn't want to cruise with a large number of people. The staff/crew were, without exception, extremely friendly. The head guide really made the trip memorable. He was very knowledgeable with a nice sense of humor. Viking's organization throughout our holiday couldn't be faulted. The breakfast buffet on the boat was very varied. Since the weather was fine we took the opportunity to eat most buffer lunches outside at the front of the boat. The evening meal was thankfully focused on quality rather than quantity. The dinner tables seated eight people so we always got to meet different travelers every day. Read Less

It was on part of the river that we sailed our last Viking cruise but could not see anything--the castles on the Rhine--because it was pouring rain and very low on the water clouds/fog. And it was a chance to travel with friends and go on the post-land extension. Cabin steward was great, serving crew was great, cruise director was cute and bubbly, manager was terrific. All in all, all the people were terrific. We were disappointed compared with last cruise: -Food was not of the same quality as we remembered -Last cruise the included wine was different each night and from the area in which we were sailing. This trip the red wine was mostly the same and from Australia and not up to the same quality. White wine was acceptable but loved the idea of drinking wine from the region in which we sail and it typically was not. -Very late in getting info (like a week before) on included excursions and yet we were to sign up ahead. And, you had to log on to find it....no e-notice that anything had been added. All was in place weeks, if not month ahead on last trip If we had wanted to hire our own guide there would not have been time to do so. -We did the post cruise land excursion which was terrific. But did not have a good description of what we would be doing day by day. In fact did not know until the night before what the routine would be, and since we did not get satisfactory information prior to the trip that would have been nice. -We were in Geneva on a Fri and Sat night. Our land guide did not know that the hotel restaurant was closed except for breakfast on the weekend. And had no clue that going into town on public transportation would take an hour rather than the "10 minutes or so" that she told us. No restaurant recommendations "just get off and wander around and there are lots of little places"--which did not open until about 9 I might add. So, we will probably sail once more time on Viking, but this trip was a let down in quality from our prior experience. Have they turned their primary attention to their new ocean branch? Read Less

We spent several days in Paris before boarding our ship and a day in Prague afterwards. We wished we'd opted for the extra days in Prague as well. Nice hotels...very modern. The seven day cruise was along the Moselle and Rhine Rivers. I would caution people to call ahead of time to get approximate travel times before booking. Our trip was advertised as two days in Paris before, two days in Prague after the cruise. Nobody offers any information regarding the ten hours of travel time before reaching Prague. We actually had little more than a day in Prague...not two. While the optional daily excursions were enjoyable, I wish I'd known all but one involved a 60-90 minute bus trip...that's 2-3 hours on a bus each day. Too much bussing and too little dissemination of information. That being said, this was overall, a very enjoyable cruise and the Viking personnel, as always, did their utmost to keep everybody happy, well fed, watered and comfortable. The cities and scenery were the most beautiful we'd seen so far. If there had been better communication about travel time v tour time, we'd have enjoyed visiting Prague for a couple of extra days. It was hard saying goodbye. My advice...ask lots of questions before booking. Read Less
