We choose this cruise to celebrate our 30th anniversary and return to Europe after a long absence. We had a great time, met lot's of great people and visited some amazing places. Everything was first class and we can't wait to book our next Viking adventure. I have already highly recommended Viking to many of our friends and would do so in a heartbeat. We loved it! The ship was beautiful, very clean with a beautiful Scandinavian decor that we really like. We upgraded to a Veranda Suite that was really nice. Two good sized rooms with a bathroom and large closet. Plenty of space for all our stuff. Every day we were treated to complimentary fresh fruit, cookies, beer, wine and water. On embarkation we were treated to a nice bottle of champagne. Best of all our laundry was done for us every day. Our Suite was spotless. We chose the Silver Spirits package that was well worth the money. We joked that Viking lost money on us the first day. But it was great to be able to drink whatever we wanted whenever we wanted. I should add that everything was top shelf including our favorite champagne. We loved the shore excursions to the various towns and cities and the local guides were excellant. They made sure you saw the things you would want to see and often added colorful local stories only they could provide. On board entertainment was superb and kept us going to the wee hours dancing and conversing with new found friends. I need to also add a shout out to our Program Director Tessa. She was incredible and Viking is truly fortunate to have her. Read Less

In celebration of our 50th Anniversary my husband and I went on the Paris to the Alps Viking Cruise and we had the time of our life. Everything was so well orchestrated and taken care of there were no worries for us. We were met at the airport in Paris by the Viking director Boris and he was there for us from the time we landed in Europe until we left the Kvasir for Switzerland. He took care of every need and question. He was great. The ship was beautiful and so were the buses. Our cabin was very comfortable and clean. Our room attendant Mr. Slaviska took very good care of us. The dining was exquisite. Good thing they didn’t weigh us when we boarded. So many choices. Our servers Ina, Archie, Judit, Jefferson and Wilfredo saw to our every need. The food was to die for. I loved it when the chef gave a little “talk” before dinner about what he had prepared. The entertainment was good. We enjoyed the talks and history Boris gave every evening about the next days tour. The ports and excursions were fantastic. The guides were so knowledgeable. We loved hearing about the history. Our post trip to Switzerland was like a dream . It was so beautiful riding the Glacier Express to Zermatt. Raphael was a wonderful guide he took great care of everyone and gave us a lot of hints and information on what we can see and do on our free time. We would go again on a Viking cruise in a heartbeat. Read Less

The Cities of Light itinerary is different from other Viking cruises. We stayed in a hotel in Paris along with our fellow cruisers for two nights, before taking a bus through Luxembourg to Trier where we embarked our ship. All the traveling was very smoothly orchestrated. Viking had a private car take us from the airport to the hotel. The hotel was situated a stone's throw away from the Eiffel Tower and served a great breakfast in the morning. While the bus ride to the ship was long, our cruise director was very entertaining, and it was nice to be able to walk around Luxembourg City for a few hours. The Viking Alsvin was a beautiful ship, well maintained, and it was a great home-away-from-home. We splurged for the veranda stateroom so we could have a balcony to sit out on. However, we had some rather loud, chatty neighbors that ruined the peacefulness of sailing down the river and really, the best views were on the top deck. Otherwise, our room was very comfortable, quiet, with plenty of storage. Viking's food is top notch. My husband and I both have dietary restrictions and the Maitre'd sought us out every morning to make arrangements for lunch and dinner. Our meals were always delicious. And the waitstaff are just the nicest people around! They really work hard to make sure you enjoy yourself! Variety of entertainment was lacking. Mostly there's piano music every night, but that's about it. We enjoyed the movie selections on our cabin's television and that was good enough for us. What we like most about cruising, though, is seeing the ports and this cruise had some fabulous stops! Bernkastel, Cochem, and Nuremberg were absolutely amazing! Viking's included tours taught us a bit about the history and culture of each town and were very enjoyable. My only real complaint is that because the itinerary is so packed and the ship needs to clear a number of lochs, the amount of time we had at each port was more limited than other Viking river cruises. We had an excellent time and would certainly go on another Viking river cruise in the future. Read Less

We had always wanted to see the Swiss Alps and parts of France and Germany. Paris was wonderful to explore and set us all up for an exciting time abroad. Our trip from Dallas to Toronto to Paris went smoothly. The air bookings were fine, however, the end of our trip was not up to Viking standards, and I will touch upon that at the end. The arrangements were impeccable as was the communication around all the trip itself. We appreciated the very professional, informative all-inclusive cruise documents which included the "Before You Go" introduction at the beginning of the brochure. That whole brochure was fantastic. Not only was it informative, but it was a wonderful way to get us excited about going! Dining was simply a wonderful experience. The food was fabulous, the wines were delightful. We just cannot say enough about the exceptional dining experience. The ship itself was very, very clean and well-maintained. The upper deck gave us a lovely view of the Mosel and Rhine, however, the chairs were often taken under the canopy and we did not want to sit in the direct sun when temperatures were in the 90's! The tours were wonderful. Our guides were great and we loved their expertise and personal interjections of facts. The morning tours were great before the very high heat took over! Coming back to the ship was like coming home again. The staff was so friendly and we were greeted with a wet towel or a cool drink. Such a nice and unexpected touch! The other guests on-board were having a good time, as we were. A big plus was the wine with lunch and dinner. We appreciated that being included in the price rather than charging each time. The wines were excellent, too, by the way. We actually tried to find them in the states. We participated in many of the tours and each was wonderful - our favorites were Palace of Versailles, Notre Dame the lake excursions, the cog wheel train up the alps and the lake shore excursions. Our trip was lovely except for the END at the Renaissance Hotel in Switzerland. We left our bags outside our hotel room, as requested and they were loaded onto the coach to take us to the airport. The only time the carry on was out of my sight was from the hotel hallway to the coach. Unfortunately, when I opened up my carry on at home, my corporate computer shoulder bag (back with silver buckles) was missing out of the top of my blue carry-on. I was disappointed that this had happened. I did write to Viking but never heard a word back from Viking. There was no computer in the bag, only some inexpensive jewelry, about 50 euro, incidentals and some work documents. As I noted, I did report this to Viking directly on an e-mail but I did not ever receive a reply from anyone, which seemed unusual. Also, the Renaissance hotel was not up to Viking standards. We had one towel for the two of us and had requested a towel from our hotel room that first evening. We ended up sharing a towel and never had a facecloth. No one ever came up with a new towels. The towel hanging in the bathroom was also dirty looking. We just think Viking should be aware of this since Viking had treated us so well and had such high standards of excellence in all that they did on the entire cruise - from quality brochures to fine dining, to intelligent guides and tours, to spot-on travel arrangements. Additionally, and unfortunately, the flight out of Switzerland was delayed which in turn made us miss our connecting flight in the States. We ended up sitting in Newark, NJ for over seven hours trying to get a flight out of New Jersey to Dallas, Texas. That was very disappointing and we were very, very tired. Viking tours are wonderful and we would love, love, love to go on another one some day. Our only wish is that we had started years ago and could keep going back for more! Thank you for a most wonderful, celebratory, memorable, educational, very-organized delightful time with my dear husband of 45 years! Read Less

We decided to sail with Viking on the Cities of Light cruise on the recommendation of friends we had talked to about Viking. The only caution I may have is to say that this is not a cruise for children. We had never travelled in Europe before, but we were comfortable the entire time. We selected a veranda suite which was fantastic! Enjoyed sitting on the veranda in the evening watching all the sites along the river. The ports of call we visited were very interesting and enjoyable, and the tours were fantastic with great guides. I could never say enough in praise of the ship staff, we could not ask for better, they were so attentive!! Our tour director was nothing short of super! Food and drink on board was always varied and very well prepared, delicious!! All in all, Viking does a great job of taking care of their customers, and offer a fantastic experience. We enjoyed the time so much, we are going again on the Grand European tour in 2020, can't wait!! Read Less

Although our land tours were wonderful our time spent on the ship was not so great. Our balcony had numerous spiders and their webs. When we first asked for the crew to clean the balcony we were told "it can't be helped as the ship docks under trees in some ports". After a couple of days complaining the crew finally began cleaning the balcony each day. We were unable to enjoy our balcony during cruising for at least 3 of the 7 days. The meals were not as nice as our previous cruises either. The wait staff were fantastic as always except the staff that supposedly help you at the airport. Unlike our other Viking cruises the staff did not assist our group with checking in for our flights or providing directions to the appropriate counters. Even though this Viking cruise was not the best we will most likely book another Viking cruise (possibly an ocean cruise) because our other Viking cruises had nice, friendly an caring staff who provided us with nothing but wonderful memories. Intimate cruise, all inclusive, no nickel-and-diming us. Excellent guides, great staff, plethora of ports of call. Sooooo much better than previous ocean cruises. We especially liked all of the UNESCO heritage sites and the wine tasting opportunities. We met some amazing people, primarily because we got to see them in an intimate setting throughout the cruise. In fact, we’re cruising with people we met on this cruise again. They have become very good friends. The staff was amazing! They perform multiple duties because it is a very small ship compared to ocean cruisers. They were excellent at all their different jobs. From beginning to end we were pampered and taken care of. We lack for nothing, and didn’t have to purchase anything extra for this trip. It is a bit expensive, but it is worth the money. We still talk about this trip to our friends frequently. We signed up for one twice as long a year later. We are looking forward to cruising with biking again and again. Read Less

I chose this cruise so my husband would have a very nice introduction into Europe. So, I chose it for the ports and land tours. We arrived in Pairs and stayed at the Pullman Eiffel Tower and explored Paris (!) both day and night. We did some on our own and also took the Highlights of Paris tour and then the Montmartre tour with the funniest and knowledgeable Janice. She was absolutely delightful, We then boarded a bus and traveled to Luxembourg and saw the American WWII Cemetery and then on to Trier Germany where we met with the Viking Hild. We cruised the Mozelle and Rhine Rivers by an expert captain and crew. Our Cruise Director Carla was ever so attentive to our stay and excursions. She was so kind and caring. The food was amazing. We also loved dancing to a wonderful Pianist Cezar. You would think we would be tired after sightseeing, but Cezar had us up dancing. Service and cleanliness impeccable. The people at the ports were delightful and our tour guides were so well educated to the area. I liked that you could do all the excursions or just be on your own. We so enjoyed Germany especially Mainz, Spyer and Cochem. We sailed to Strasbourg France - again amazing. Our final cruise stop was Bazel Switzerland. Amazing. We took the option tour of the Alps which was well worth it. We also cruised the lake in Zurich. Travel plans including plane travel, arrival,pick-up and disembarkation were so sooth. Again - Amazing. From the travel person assisting with the reservation on to the cruise and home. So personalized. I loved the volume of passengers. We made great friends and memories. I did not feel like a number. Amazing. My husband so loved Europe and Viking that we already are planning on our next trip soon! Read Less

We liked the route starting with two days in Paris and ending with two days in Prague. In between we cruised the beautiful Main, Moselle and Rhine rivers. For North Americans I would recommend arriving a day early to recover from jet lag. Every day on the boat we stopped at a small town that was invariably picturesque and very old where we were met by a local guide to show us around. The rivers traveled along were fairly narrow so there were always things to see while cruising. We had seen Viking ads on tv and liked the look of the boat, we really didn't want to cruise with a large number of people. The staff/crew were, without exception, extremely friendly. The head guide really made the trip memorable. He was very knowledgeable with a nice sense of humor. Viking's organization throughout our holiday couldn't be faulted. The breakfast buffet on the boat was very varied. Since the weather was fine we took the opportunity to eat most buffer lunches outside at the front of the boat. The evening meal was thankfully focused on quality rather than quantity. The dinner tables seated eight people so we always got to meet different travelers every day. Read Less

We took the cruise-only portion of the Paris to Prague cruise. We spent several days on our own in Paris, then took the TGV to Luxembourg City and then the public bus to Remich that dropped us off within 100 ft of the ship (the bus fare was $2 - a bargin!). The hotel manager met us at the bottom of the gangway and took care of our bags. We were in Room 208 on the Sapphire Deck. The design and maintenance of the cabin was great! The slight angling of the wall between the bed and the bathroom made both rooms seem larger than in cabins with perpendicular walls. Thanks to whoever came up with the idea. The lunches and dinners were very good, especially the soups and salads. The breakfasts were pretty much the same each day - not bad but not outstanding. The ship has a nice lounge area on the Deck 3 aft where coffee and tea are available 24/7 as well as pastries and juice. The one disappointment was the tasting menu that they serve in the evening in the bistro. It was an effort to add some variety to the food choices, but it is a set menu and some of the items didn't go together with each other and with the wines very well. All of the tours were good. We especially enjoyed the wine tasting in Bernkastel, the stop in Miltonburg (less touristy than a lot of the other city we visited), and the Residence in Wurzburg. The crew was very helpful and conscience throughout the cruise. The key disappoint was the limited pre-cruise support. We did not book a pre-cruise transfer so we needed to get information on where the ship would be docked in Remich. We were told that we would be sent that information a couple of days before we embarked, but nothing ever came. Fortunately, Remich is a very small town and the bus driver knew where the ship was docked so it was a none issue, but providing an address ahead of time would have been appreciated. Read Less

Being a runner who has logged over 35,000 miles, many years ago recognized that I had damaged my inner ear which causes me to easily experience vertigo. Never thought I would take a cruise for this reason. Then my wife talked me into trying a river cruise. So glad she did but so sad we waited so long to experience the Viking Experience. Never felt any vertigo on the ship regardless of it being docked, moving or going through a lock. We opted for a veranda suite and loved the extra space and location of the room. Very functional, plenty of storage and hanger space. The twice daily room service was a plus and our cabin staffer did a great job anytime we had a different or special request. Internet was spotty in the room but who cares when on vacation. Laundry service was easy and always 1-day service (no charge if in a suite on this boat). The food was always tasty and plentiful and our servers did a great job learning our names and likes/dislikes almost instantly. Same with the bar tenders - Crown Royal on the rock please. The concierge learned quickly I liked to run and she would give me advance notice when the ship would be docked overnight so I could get up early and get in a run before breakfast. The only downside to this particular Viking cruise (Cities of Light) was the first 2 and last 2 days were spent in hotels. The hotels were OK but traveling from the hotel to the boat and vice-versa was tiresome. We extended both sides of the cruise and did each outside of Viking as we are very experienced travelers and made arrangements on more favorable terms than Viking provided. We loved our first Viking Experience enough that we are planning a Russian river cruise in 2018. Cannot wait to experience the Viking Experience again. Read Less

A friend of mine was taking this cruise with his wife and suggested my wife and I join them. It was a last minute decision on our part but was on our list of things to do....it turned out to be one of the best cruises we ever took (first river cruise). Viking was excellent and we are surely going to do another one. Since this was our first River cruise it was really exciting for us. We loved the continually changing scenery and the ability of getting off the boat at different towns and mixiting it up with the locals. We thought the included tours were excellent. After being on multiple ocean cruises, the only thing we noted was there didn't seem to be much security as when getting on and off of an ocean cruise. I assume it's there but it wasn't as obvious to us as it is with an ocean cruise. Read Less

This was our 30th Anniversary and we wanted to make it special. We have long thought about river cruises. I researched 5 different companies and then worked with my travel agent. Her suggestion was a Viking Cruise. I was skeptical about taking the Cities of Light Cruise & going to Prague, but she found a great deal. We have been on a few ocean cruises with different companies and I think Viking has spoiled us to the point that we're not sure we want to go with anyone else. We couldn't have been more pleased with our cruise! The 2 nights in Paris were wonderful. We arrived on Bastille Day, July 14th and our hotel was right across the street from the Eiffel Tower! The fireworks display was fabulous and we watched it from our hotel. All our our tour guides were wonderful. Very knowledgeable and fun. It seemed like they really enjoyed being with us. After leaving Paris, we went to Luxembourg. Our group was very fortunate. We finished up the tour just as Secretary of State Kerry walked down the street to lay a wreath at the Monument of Remembrance. He stopped to talked to our group before moving on. I don't think there are enough words to describe how wonderful the Viking Idun was. Everyone was set up and ready as we boarded the ship. The staff was so attentive and helpful. Our servers were amazing. After only 1 day, they knew exactly what we liked and brought it to our table or at the bar! The food was first class! Don't know how to describe how much we enjoyed just cruising the river. Even though there were quite a few lochs and we weren't able to go up on top, it was extremely relaxing. We can't wait to go on another Viking Cruise! The hardest part is deciding another river cruise or trying the Viking Ocean cruises. Read Less

Every facet of the Viking experience from contacting them to discuss cruises to the final disembarkation is as good as it gets. Viking's customer service is second to none. All agents I have spoken with have been friendly and knowledgeable. I advise anyone to always call Viking to get a quote. Viking offers many specials that are not on their website. Call them and negotiate. Additionally, be sure to check out Viking Air. On some cruises it can even be free from larger international airports. The Rhine Rhapsody cruise actually begins in Paris. We stayed at the Le Meridian in the Etoile' district of Paris. It is not the most convenient hotel to central Paris but a taxi or Metro ride can quickly get you to central Paris. This cruise spends two days in Paris and the second day you can do a us tour of major sites. On the third day you take a bus to Trier with a short stop in Luxembourg. The ride is long and pretty boring. Embarkation is later that afternoon and is as smooth as it gets. Once on the ship, you can relax in your comfortable stateroom before supper. The ship was clean and all of the employees are extremely helpful. All food from breakfast to supper is excellent. There were a few misses, but that can be chalked up to preferences rather than inferior food or ingredients. Most every stop has some sort of local entertainment coming on board and they are usually very good performers. This cruise stops in many interesting ports including Cochem, Bernkastle, Heidelberg and Strasbourg. This cruise and the Rhine River cruise are both fantastic cruises and I highly recommend them both. We will continue to cruise with Viking. We have already booked a Viking sea cruise and are anticipating a wonderful experience. For more travel information go to my website: www.theearthandacompass.com Read Less

My wife and I started our Rhine River Cruise in Paris. A Viking representative was there to direct us to our bus. We had a visual journey to our hotel. The hotel was great as well as the staff. Again, a Viking representative was in the lobby to help with sightseeing or anything else. Really first class. We traveled by bus to Trier and the Viking Odin. A most beautiful sight. Sleek, Clean, moored to a small dock with the city of Trier behind it. I knew we had made the right travel decision. The cabins are clean and I mean clean. Every day when we left Lubka would be there already cleaning. She also made sure each room had a personal touch. Towels wrapped like dogs. Butterfly's. Amazing she found time to do that but that's the Viking way. I know that now. You become family. The food was excellent. I felt like I was on a Food Channel show. And the presentation was just as good. The Chef took great pride in his work and it showed. The nightly Pre-Excursion lectures were wonderful and set you up for a most memorable day. I can't say enough good things about every excursion we went on. Each guide was knowledgeable and courteous and made every day fun and informative. After a day of Castle Climbing it was always good to come back to the boat, clean up and have DaDa make me a drink at the bar. Dinner and then maybe a little music in the lounge. Then it was time to go to a clean shower in our clean cabin and fall asleep with dreams of what tomorrow would bring. Thanks to all the staff of The Viking Odin! And tell Lubka and DaDa hello. It's been a year or so and I still remember their names. But then again, that's Viking. Read Less
