We loved the Viking River Cruises so wanted to try the ocean cruise and also wanted to see China. For the most part we were very pleased. The cabin and service were excellent. The food was good but not excellent. Their waffles were inedible. We tried the chef's table two times - both times the food was too spicy. Since there was a limited menu choice, we opted to skip eating there. Embarkation was ok but could have been better. Because we all landed too early to get on the boat, they took us to a hotel conference room. That was fine, but they had limited food which disappeared before everyone had a chance to get some. The people coming in after us, had no food. Most of the shore excursions were good, but others were lacking. The walking tour of Hong Kong was a total waste of time. The magic show and cultural history was fantastic. We had Viking book our airfare. We were very unhappy with their service. On one flight they put us in the very last row. There were plenty of seats available so I could move us, but was not pleased that they put us in the worst seats on the plane. On the American flight to Hong Kong from L.A. we were packed in like sardines in the most uncomfortable seating arrangement ever. I was disappointed that Viking did not reach out to us before the cruise about the situation in Hong Kong. I know a lot of people cancelled their trip. I had expected some information from Viking about the situation and how it might effect our time and safety in Hong Kong. We took the extended tour to Beijing. We were disappointed that Viking had not warned us that it was week of China's celebration of their country's 70th anniversary. The crowds were so large. Not sure we would have booked the extension if we had known. Overall we were very pleased with our cruise, but we feel Viking could have done better in some areas. Read Less

This was our third trip on Silversea in an Owner's Suite. We did Alaska--Anchorage to Vancouver on this cruise. Silver Muse was only about a year old. We found the decor to be comparable to Silversea standards, but modernized. We prefer the older, warmer decor, but recognize that Silversea must keep up with the times. Compare my pictures of Silver Muse with my pictures of Silver Shadow (we were on the final voyage of Silver Shadow before its makeover). As you probably know, Royal Caribbean bought Silversea a year ago. It may be starting to show. 1. There have always been binoculars in Owner's Suites in the past. Now eliminated. 2. Service in the restaurants on Silver Muse has deteriorated compared to our prior experience. There were inordinately long waits between courses. And it wasn't just us. We had recommended Silversea to an informal group of 15, and everybody had similar experiences. Our next to last night took the cake. We were in one of their specialty restaurants (Silver Note). Our reservation was for 8:00, and we arrived at that time. At 9:50, we had only been served an appetizer. We had waited an hour following our appetizer, and still had not been served our main course. That is when we walked out. Perhaps, they have reduced the wait staff to the point that service does not meet their prior standards. Or, perhaps, because of the expansion of the fleet, they have been forced to promote staff before they were ready. 3. They have installed Royal Caribbean's Cellular at Sea system on the Silversea cruise ships (I don’t recall that on my prior Silversea cruises). Having spent my career in the wireless industry, let me assure you that there is no bigger rip-off than Cellular at Sea. You can easily spend far more on Cellular at Sea, than the cost of your cruise. We worried that despite blocking our phones from connecting to Cellular at Sea, that we would unintentionally unblock it, and incur thousands of dollars in charges (thousands of dollars is not hyperbolic). 4. Restaurant reservations have been impossibly frustrating for me on Silversea. At the beginning of this cruise it occurred to me that I should probably make reservations for our next cruise, even though it was still 50 days away. Here is what I got: 11 not available, and 14 waitlisted. I was unable to make a single reservation--not one. I advised my cruise consultant that for future bookings he must set his alarm clock for midnight on the day reservations open and call me so that I don't miss the window of opportunity. (In fairness, our butler was able to make reservation for all the restaurants during our next cruise.) 5. Silversea is remodeling their owner's suites and eliminating the convenient U-shaped bars. They are putting in little cabinets that simply are not as nice or convenient for me. While there were some disappointments with restaurant service, I trust that management will focus on correcting those deficits. Read Less

First of all, this idiot company planned an itinerary which would have brought us to a Korean port on a national Korean Holliday, something that should have been known well in advance. Then after paying for the voyage and the refund deadline passing, they tell the paid up passengers that the only Korean port is cancelled because it falls on a Korean National Holliday. How was this not known in advance? Why wait till everyone is paid up and then announce the itinerary change? Next, the food is the worst I’ve ever had at sea. Everything is unseasoned and cooked to death, ostensibly to please the many Australian/British passengers. The blandest food I have ever tasted - we’re talking “home-for-the-aged quality”. No herbs, no spice, no salt. It’s like they have a flavor extractor in the kitchen. Canned cat food would probably have more flavor. Deserts are hideous gelatin and cornstarch monstrosities - for example: we’re talking custard that is so rubbery you can take a spoonful, bang it facedown on a plate, and the custard bounces back without a dent — total over-gelatined rubber. Towels in the bathroom on this new ship are like sandpaper. How do you even find towels like that? The room is nicely appointed and modern. The staff seems nice enough, but are forgetful and disorganized. I would be asked 4 times by 4 different people if I’d like something to drink then watch all the tables seated after me get served while I’m ignored and have to get up ad go to the service area to get my own coke or water. Need silverware! Plan on getting that for yourself too. This happened multiple times during the first 5 days. I’ve got over a week to go with this terrible food and bad service. Worst cruise decision in 30 years of cruising. Carnival would have even been better. How did viking make the best cruise line list? Read Less

Having been on several river cruises with Viking which we love doing, we thought we’d book an Ocean cruise with Viking for our ruby wedding anniversaries. . We were a bit frustrated before going on the cruise owing to the system in place for booking trips. Seemed to be class driven. I.e. the more you paid the better the choice. We couldn’t book a morning trip on all the included trips and some of the paid trips. In fact some of the trips we had booked paid or otherwise were changed by the time we got on board. We had to faff about getting them organised to suit. Wasn’t too much of a problem but we felt the poor girl on guest services must have dreaded seeing us coming towards her. The excursions were good but the qv’s were a disaster. The guides were knowledgeable and fun on the coach but unless you were on their shoulders you couldn’t hear anything, too much static. The excursions were extremely busy too. Had a wonderful cruise on board the Orion. Great cabin, crew, and entertainment. Captain made a good choice by sailing to our second port of call to miss the typhoon that hit Tokyo. All the ports of call were superb but must say Taipei and Hong Kong were favourites. The food was good too but I felt this was the only thing that let you down. The temperature for me was warm as opposed to being hot. Some of the dishes in the world buffet for example the main roast of the day was served very rare. Not good. Some of the meals in the pool area were cooked to order but it was so hot in there that the “sides” were sitting out in all that heat so not too appetising at all. I had a chicken tikka and it was literally skin and bones. Yuk. Don’t get me wrong the chefs would cook you anything asked for which was great and hot but the sides were cool. The seafood dishes and sushi were all fantastic, they were served cold just as they should’ve. The restaurant was disappointing too it was cold in some of the areas and the food was served lukewarm at breakfast and dinner. Service was good at breakfast but a lot slower at dinner. We asked for a Sauvignon Blanc only to be told there wasn’t any so had a different wine which was nice too as is all the wines on offer but disappointed with not getting what we asked for especially when we got it later on in the bar. Enjoyed movies under the stars. The waiter guys up in explorers lounge were fabulous. Robin the whale and dolphin man was lovely. Even though we didn’t see too many whales or dolphins. The doctor was a fun chap. Something else!! This was a special cruise for our ruby wedding anniversaries and overall we did enjoy ourselves but would have to think again before booking a Viking ocean cruise. I don’t feel the experience we’ve had on the river boats have carried well on to the Ocean cruise ships. We maybe expected too much. Read Less

We had one of the best cabin attendants ever on Viking cruises. Lectures were not as good as previous cruises. Limited activities during sea days. Ongoing ship information by the captain very good considering typhoon in area. Embark and disembark very organized and quick. Music by individual piano, violin, and guitar very enjoyable late day and evening. Selected night entertainers very good. . . . .don't need the large group stage shows. Excursions guides very good, well organized leaving and return on time. Site visits excellent and informative even with limited time frame. Would like to have more time in Nagasaki. Speaker at the library was excellent even with interpreters assisting. Hong Kong excursion to Aberdeen was outstanding and a great guide for information provided, managing the group, time at each stop, and general fun to be with on bus. Departure to Hong Kong airport managed very well considering possible protestor problems Read Less

The itinerary was the reason for this cruise, even in this time of the year without cherry blossoms or Indian summer colors (too late, too early). It was a time of intense activity as there was another port every day and the climate which was hot and humid made it streneous as well. We knew the Quest from one other cruise, our other 18 cruises with Azamara we have had with Journey and Pursuit. This time the food was awsome, Chef Colin surprised us every day with local cuisine dishes which led us not to book the speciality restaurants but use the Discovery restaurant every evening. Service in the restaurant and bars was very good, we only found one person which was not smiling at all the entire cruise. In regard to entertainment we went to the Living Room every night and found the live band "The Smooth Sensations" as the best we ever had on an Azamara ship, hope to see them again soon. The sound volume of the pianist and singer in The Den we found disturbing loud and unpleasant. We enjoyed the live music of traditional Japanese koto. In general the temperature on deck 5 was by far to low, lots of people caught colds and asking to increase the temperature brought no result during the entire cruise. So bring a lot of sweaters and jackets and ask for blankets in the restaurant. The Azamazing evening took place in Busan/South Korea with stunning performances of music and taek won do. Also the white night party was a success. We had booked shore excursions privately with local english speaking guides and were very satisfied with the results. We found an American couple to take part so the costs were reasonable compared to excursions the ship offered and we could take influence on what to see or not. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was next on our bucket list. We really wanted to know Japan, not just from Tokyo, but from the aspect of the people in the smaller towns and ports. We have also had great experiences with the Intensive cruise on Azamara in the past. We hold Azamara to a very high standard based on past sailings. This cruise met and exceeded our expectations. The high points are as follows 1. The food in Discoveries has greatly improved with Azamaras new policy of giving the executive chefs free reign. Chef Colin and his crew executed imaginative menus. The food and service in prime C and Aquafina was as expected....flawless and delicious! 2. White night was a blast! The captain delayed it twice due to weather concerns. He was right and the weather was perfect. Again, freedom to act. 3. The azamazing evening in Busan combined unusual and imaginative Korean traditional music and dance with a truly amazing performance by the Korean university Tae Kwan Do team. 4.Shore excursions were executed flawlessly. My Daised and Kyoto were 2 of the many highlights. 5. The visibility of the officers of the ship makes the Quest different from all other cruise lines. They are always there to give a helping hand or just to talk. A perfect example was clearing Korean customs. I could go on but I think you all get the message. Go for the adventure. If you expect shows and glitz and the other trapping of superficiality, choose another cruise line. If you really want to have great food, great service and immersion into culture, this is your ship! Tokyo to San Francisco, 23 days of being pampered, educated, and involved. This was our first Crystal cruise, and hopefully it will not be our last. This “Movie and Theater” themed cruise offered speakers, documentaries and entertainers. Our days at sea were filled with lecturers and performances. Tours from the ship in various ports were a little bit pricey, but enjoyable. The ship is small enough to be able to meet people more than once. Dining room staff was friendly. Special meal orders were served graciously. Symphony is an older ship, but is very well maintained. A few more electrical outlets would have been helpful, as would have been more prompt repairs to malfunctioning washers and dryers. Over all, cruising on Crystal Symphony was a wonderful experience! Special kudos to Saleh, our waiter who anticipated our every need. Remi, the head waiter, was a miracle worker who brought my the next day’s menu so that my requested salt free meals could be prepared for me. Read Less

The itinerary matched exactly the route (North Pacific) we desired especially Tokyo embarkation and Vancouver disembarkation ports. We had sailed on many Viking River cruises and we were confident that Viking Ocean would not disappoint. We were not disappointed! The ships are beautiful, well appointed and with only 900 passengers they are a proper size for us. We love children but it was very nice and relaxing to have ALL passengers in the adult category. The mix of passengers were well traveled and so very nice to share dinners with strangers whom became friends before the evening was finished, The lectures were enjoyable and educational. Some of the best lecture programs on any cruise line we have been on. The entertainment was simple and extremely professional. The singing/dance performers were only 4 but gave us a better performance than big over the top huge groups on other luxury cruise lines. No photo taking....no casinos, no bingo, great lounge areas for relaxing are all pluses. A retractable roof over the pool and outdoor entertainment area is surely a plus. We were very pleased with all the food and eating venues on the Viking Orion but believe all Regent ships and on some Oceania ships the overall food is a small touch better. Since the completion of our first Viking Ocean cruise we have voted our approval by booking our next 2 Viking ocean cruises namely in January 2020 to the Caribbean and another cruise in May 2021 "Into the Midnight Sun". Chose this cruise because we wanted to visit Japan, Eastern Russia and the Behring Sea. The ship was second to none, and I've sailed on many ocean cruises: 4 times on Princess (reasonably good for the money, but certainly not great), 1 time on Celebrity (very good cruise line!), 1 time on Orient (now out of business - and with good reason), and 3 times on Oceania (also a very good cruise line -- but with several negatives which makes me wonder if I'll ever sail with Oceania again). But the best, by far, was Viking's Ocean ship - the Orion. Here's why: OLDER TRAVELERS. I'm a senior citizen (age 67 at the time) and this ship was great for older folks -- which is not to say that it's not also great for folks from about 35 years and older. But no children are permitted, so there was no crying children to cope with. My wife and I interacted with many others on this cruise and everyone was pleasant or nicer. I can't, of course, control who can sail on this cruise line, and one small group bothered me. I overheard them in the buffet restaurant complaining about a long delay to sail away from an Alaskan port -- and they were correct; it was a long delay. But they unanimously and loudly decided it was those "lazy union workers" at the port who were responsible even though there was no way for them to know. I've never been a union worker but to accuse anyone of something without evidence is just ignorant. I guess it takes all types to make a passenger list. SHIP. The ship is very well laid out. I love libraries on ships and on Viking there were little libraries all over the ship -- all with comfortable chairs and loungers, and friendly, attentive, unobtrusive drink service. Besides great libraries the décor was expensive but very tasteful. So many interesting pieces of art all over the ship, and great photos too. The interior of the ship was done in very warm, cozy colors. The gym was fantastic with just about any kind of machine you can want -- European style. I loved the fact that there was NEVER a line at the elevators! The stairs are right there, but if you want the ride, the elevators are fast and readily available -- even at meal time. FOOD. This is always of interest to travelers. I found that the food in the main dining room ranged from superb to rotten. Of course if you don't like your menu choice you can always get something else from that menu -- so you always have something at least "pretty good" to eat if not superb. The specialty restaurants were superb every time we went, and they don't cost extra to get in. But you do need reservations and at least BEORE the cruise you are limited in the number of reservations you can make in those specialty restaurants. After you're on the trip you can get extra reservations if available at the time you want. Another thing I liked about Viking Ocean cruises is the fact that in the restaurants (but not the buffet) if you're an anti-social sort (like me) you can always get a table for just you and your traveling companion. You can always opt to dine as part of a larger group, and if you want to dine with specific friends, that's always possible (if your friends like you enough). One other thing about the main dining room: it is NOT one large room; it is divided into five (or was it seven?) separate seating areas, so you never felt like you are eating in an airplane hangar or, ugh, a barn. The main dining rooms always felt cozy and service was great. CABIN: This was our first cruise with Viking, so I can't say much about the other cabins on the ship, but ours was enormous. Wasn't quite big enough for a full basketball game with referees and such, but very spacious and well-appointed. Of course the cabin steward and helper were so very pleasant, respectful (he wouldn't call me by my first name even though I insisted) and efficient. However, since my wife and I were in a large suite it was strange (after cruising on Oceania) that there was no "butler" service. I'm not a butler-type guy; I'm sweet and gentle and never demanding. But butler service on Oceania was so wonderful, and I missed it on Viking -- especially in our pricey cabin suite. But the cabin steward and his helper were great, and when we had laundry to do -- it always came back within 24 hours even though the schedule said it would take 48 hours. Go figure. POOL. I never went in the pool, but I loved the fact that the pool had a retractable roof so that when it was closed it was comfortable for swimming even in cold climates. As always on this ship, a library was right nearby and I did sit at poolside very content to read in peace and quiet. (Yes, fellow travelers did use the pool in every climate we visited.) ENTERTAINMENT. I can't say enough about the entertainment! I tend to choose lectures and science-oriented movies and there were 3 (count 'em, THREE) auditoriums (auditoria?). One very large one and there were always seats available for whatever was going on there, and two smaller ones for movies and lectures. Again, never a problem getting seats in these smaller places. The two smaller ones were closed off from the very large auditorium by a moveable wall - so during very popular entertainment presentations the seats in the small auditoriums became part of the already-large largest auditorium. FUTURE CRUISES. There is a "future cruises" office available (on a rather limited time schedule, unfortunately), and the discounts for those wanting to book future Viking cruises (both Ocean and River, I think) while on a current cruise are great! My wife and I were so impressed with Viking Ocean cruises that we booked another cruise at this "future cruises" office. The fellow who worked there could have been a little better informed on certain matters, but he was knowledgeable enough. Maybe he was filling-in for somebody else. But, as I said, his schedule in that office was very limited and you really needed to make a reservation in advance. Read Less

This was our third cruise with Viking ocean. We chose this trip for the itinerary. We had never been to Asia and liked the ports in both Asia and Alaska. Crossing the Int’l Dateline added to the attraction. We were in the Orion in Jan-Feb visiting New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia. This crew was better trained and worked well together. We were pleased with most aspects of the ship. A few little things need work, but nothing major. You know what you get with Viking-it is an older crowd but activities/entertainment were sufficient for us. While some of the entertainment was the same, they did a good job at adding new entertainers. As Viking enters new parts of the world they are learning their way with shore excursions and local customs. Shore excursions were well managed. They do a good job at calling people at the right time and keep waiting times to a minimum. Checkin staff did a great job. Local guides were good. A sufficient level of activities were offered. EMBARKATION a breeze. You can arrive well before your checkin time. You are greeted with a glass of champagne and invited to use the open restaurants. Your luggage will be in your room by your assigned checkin time. DISEMBARKATION-we had a curve thrown as we could not stay in port because of too many ships in Vancouver. Luggage was offloaded in the middle of the night. We didn’t hear a thing. We disembarked via tender according to flight times. Full breakfast services available. You had to be out of your stateroom by 10am. Tenders left according to schedule with staff assisting everyone. Our luggage was waiting at our terminal at the airport. One of the most efficient operations we have experienced. CABINS Deck 3. Be careful of location. Torshavn noise is audible almost every night. Not late into the night, but it may bother some. A very convenient deck. DINING-Dining room and World Cafe offered a varied selection. Soups could use some improvement. Replenishment of eating utensils/napkins was too slow. Chef’s table-staff could use better training. One visit we had two wine pairings and no food. The French menu was too rich; not a good balance between first and main courses. Manfredi’s was very good, but don’t try to have pasta as a separate course-throws them off! SERVICE in general was excellent. Lounges and bar waiters were great. Most were very personable-not long before they know your name and cabin #! Room steward was wonderful-Edwin. SHIP-beautifully appointed. Always spotless. This ship has a dome. I don’t think this is a feature that will be included in the rest of the fleet. Makes the 8th floor area very hot. Eliminates a nice viewing/drinking area. Don’t know if that is the reason why the 7th floor area of the Explorers lounge tends to be cold. The skins on the sofas are starting to shed. Most people rolled them back to protect their clothing! PORTS/excursions. Viking’s first visits to ports can present problems. Most of our excursions were organized. In cases where we took local shuttles the scheduled were mixed. We ended up seeing what we wanted to see. ACTIVITIES-a little more variety on sea days would have been good as this was a long cruise. Lectures varied and sufficient. Like the ability to view the port talk in your cabin on the following day. Very good selection of shows/movies on the in-room system. Free internet a great feature-reception was generally good. Suggestions-have hot water in the World Cafe for hand-washing. There were some illness problems. The internet system in the room for onboard account, reservations, etc needs immediate help. The ship can not control or correct any errors. The dining for Chef’s Table had the wrong info for almost 8 days. The general website also had errors for our trip. The map wasn’t corrected until a few days before we sailed. On board future booking-a great offer that we used. However, you need to book a specific cruise that you know you won’t be using. Mucks up the booking system for other Viking customers and the whole reservation system. Viking needs to keep its attention to detail at a high level as they release the rest of the fleet! We enjoyed the cruise around Japan with the view to visit Hirosaki Castle Park for Sakura or Cherry Blossom which usually peak between 22Apr to 1May. It was our main highlight and we cherished the beautiful sakura. Short 15min walk from port, 40 min direct train trip from JR Aomori to JR Hirosaki and 20 min walk to Castle. Park entry was free. Views were fantastic. Public holiday due to Emperor Hirohito abdication and Emperor Naruhito ascending to throne, meant the place had lots of food stalls, crowd and festive ambience. Feel very safe and pleasant throughout. Cruise overall was alright. Weather and food was good, generally. Enjoyed the Princess production shows like To Be Born Wild ( rock n roll ) and Secret Silk ( great display of props but audio vocals were muffled eventhough seated in centre of thearte ...needs imporvement). Other guests entertainers were a bit dull but I give credit to Dominic Duo at the Wheelhouse Bar. We danced to their tunes. Food quality and service in the main dining room were alright but not always in the Horizon Court as it is very busy with people and lacks the ambience. Food quality can be unappealing sometimes. Same goes with breakfast room service. Did not use the pizzaria but enoyed the matcha ice cream from the parlour. Port visits were not that attractive but there were farewell local dance and Samurai performances in Sakata and Aomori. People were very welcoming and taxi drivers were very polite and very fair in their fares and please take back any small change and receipt given out of politeness to them. No need for tips. Service with a smile. We did a bit of shopping in downtown Busan after we figured how to use their Metro. Get entry to right train platform as you can't walk over to the correct platform if wrong like other city metros. We wasted our ticket but it is alright. A small price to pay for the adventure. Busan was lively downtown in Art Street. 1 USD to 1000 Won ans 1 Aud to 800 Won. Prices are in their 000s. A small drink at a street vendor cost me 3500Won or 3.5USD. Views across Kanmon Straits between Kyushu and Honshu, was interesting if you happen to know about the great sea battles fought here that created the Kamakura Shogunate in 11th Century. Just returned from the Tokyo to Singapore (25day)segment of the World Cruise on Insignia. (We were not advised at time of booking with Oceania that we were joining a world cruise)Spent a lot of money on this trip and have never had such a bad experience on Oceania. We were not aware we were joining aprox 360 world cruisers (w.c’s.) but found out right away that cliques had already been established and it was almost impossible to penetrate the barrier between the segment guests and the w.c’s. Getting a large table for dinner was near impossible (never experienced that). Several events were organized for the w.c’s (special events and private parties)while the rest of the segment guests were left behind with little and sometimes no entertainment at all. We also realized the segment guests were paying US$100 pp.pd more than the wc’s we assume to subsidize the world cruise. Never been on an Oceania Cruise where there were NO extra activities. Especially on sea days. It was the usual bag o beans, trivia, mini putt and table tennis. It was sooo... boring. We made our displeasure known to the concierge on two occasions and promises were made that our concerns would be escalated but of course we heard nothing. I see SILVERSEA is getting mixed reviews. SILVERSEA advertises and charges in the ultimate luxury category but after two cruises, my experience is it is clearly not. I described our experience in a previous local post as: "misrepresented in the advertisement, lack of planning very evident, mismanaged on the ship, disregard for passenger interests, and the withholding of critical information." I saw a Facebook post that asked the question if anyone else is noticing the decline in SILVERSEA after the purchase by Royal Caribbean. Yes!! We were on the SILVER SHADOW, leaving Tokyo on Sept. 28, 2018 and arriving in Hong Kong on Oct. 14. I see on your site that others on this same horrific boat ride posted very negative reviews. Trying to outrun two super typhoons was traumatic, but the way it was managed was much worse. We kept our local upscale West Lake Hills, TX Travel Agency apprised throughout the ordeal followed by a thorough debriefing upon return. Clients expect a travel agency to be very knowledgeable and truthful with them on recommendations. I found that our agent continued to promote SILVERSEA even knowing of serious problems. I would recommend doing your own research by reading actual customer reviews on places like Cruise Critic. 1) WITHHOLDING INFORMATION SILVERSEA HAD A DUTY TO REPORT - We purchased the SILVERSEA "REST ASSURED" Insurance plan that was advertised by the cruise line as “true peace of mind” to provide 100% cruise credit for air, hotels and cruise for cancellation up to only ONE DAY before the trip. SILVERSEA's Captain even admitted they were tracking the super typhoon headed straight for us THREE DAYS before scheduled sailing. SILVERSEA failed in its duty and their own policy to tell us or our travel agent therefore foreclosing on our opportunity to utilize the insurance and reschedule the cruise. The insurance plan they sell themselves seems to be a conflict of interest. 2) NO EVIDENCE OF REFURBISHMENT - SILVERSEA advertises that the SILVER SHADOW was refurbished in 2017, but we were on that same ship in 2016 and 2018. We saw no evidence of same. The old orange and gold colored upholstery had dirty spots that I sent a picture of to our travel agent. A chair in our cabin literally collapsed when I sat in it and I’m small. They were painting verandas during the cruise and piled the outside furniture in our cabins for painting and drying. They were cleaning hallway carpets and leaving loud fans on to dry it for hours. This maintenance work should not have been going on during a cruise passengers paid $30,000/cabin for. 3) POOR ITINERARY PLANNING - It seemed that SILVERSEA just threw the itinerary together without doing proper research. The ship arrived in Beijing on China’s ANNUAL national holiday and in Hong Kong when the port was closed to taxis because of an ANNUAL bike race. Any cruise company should know to schedule around major annual events like those. With only a one day sailing delay, those overwhelming crowds and confusion could have been avoided. 4) NO DISCLOSURE ON TYPHOON SEASON - SILVERSEA neglected to advise customers that the cruise was scheduled during the high season for typhoons in that part of the world. As soon as we got on the ship, in an all-passenger meeting, the captain told us we were responsible because we should have known. No one did and he immediately offended us all. Our supposed upscale West Lake Hills travel agent was apparently unaware or did not tell us they were recommending a cruise in an area experiencing typhoon season during the time of our cruise. As a result, passengers were subjected to two super typhoons with the Captain telling us to eat and drink as little as possible, including water. 5) APPARENT MISREPRESENTATION OF MAJOR FACTS - SILVERSEA told us there was A NEW CHINESE POLICY THAT PROHIBITED THEM FROM SAILING FROM SOUTH KOREA DIRECTLY TO CHINA which made SILVERSEA have to cancel many passengers’ top port in Seoul CAUSING THEM TO MISS THE DMZ. When I checked, both a US Senator and US Congressman reported finding NO POLICY OF THE KIND and other cruise companies confirmed there was no such policy. Other ship’s had in fact sailed from South Korea to China. Passengers speculated, and there was unverified evidence, that the excursion SILVERSEA sold us for the DMZ was not available on the day we were scheduled to be there and they were using the fabricated policy to hide that. 6) Cruise Critic has requested that I provide more on-ship experience information. Trying to outrun two super typhoons consumed most of the time, eliminated ports and excursions and impacted the on-ship experience. The positive was passengers bonded together in our fear and anger. We are aware of a number like us who have submitted claims for reimbursement. One person mentioned his claim on his Cruise Critic review. We liked the passengers from all over the world and we still keep in touch. I would rate food, entertainment and activities on board as average or below. Since the Captain told us to cut back significantly on our food and drink intake, obviously that normal experience was diminished. Seasick pills were distributed. A further disappointment on the food was, unlike the advertisement, it did not reflect the culture we were in except for one final buffet. The wellness director was just a snake oil saleslady trying to make an extra buck for herself. It was disgraceful and one passenger I met said she wrote on her evaluation that the person was inappropriate for the job. Communication was confusing or lacking, causing getting on and off the ship at ports very frustrating. We almost missed an excursion because of wrong information. The butlers were the positive point of the cruise always giving good service. Another positive was the thought-provoking and interesting political speaker and the port speaker. Many of our ports and therefore excursions were cancelled because of the weather. The one good excursion was the Terra Cotta warriors. It is an expensive excursion but we thought worthwhile seeing. We cannot recommend SILVERSEA because honestly, we cannot trust them. The information above is important for people to know. I plan to continue publicizing these facts until SILVERSEA decides to do the honorable thing for passengers they have wronged." Read Less

After waiting a year and a half for this cruise, we embarked in Tokyo, at 2:30 on Sept. 28th. At 4:00 we had the life jacket review, and immediately thereafter there was an announcement of an important meeting with the captain in the lounge. Upon entering the lounge, we found the captain on the stage with a huge map, showing the coming Tyohoon Trami, coming straight southbound into our voyage northbound. We were going to run right into it. The captain said, no less than 10 times, “it’s going to be very very bad.” Passengers began asking if we shouldn’t be getting off the ship and the only thing the captain would respond was “it’s up to you individually to decide what you want to do but it’s going to be very very bad.” Other passengers asked if we should get off and fly to another port and meet the ship, and the captain stated that wasn’t a good idea because he couldn’t guarantee being able to dock in any given port. Osaka, our first port, had already been canceled, and the typhoon was set to hit Hiroshima, our second port, in 2 days. We also couldn’t stay in Tokyo as the storm was due to hit there in about 4 days. We left the meeting, with about 25% of the passengers and went to call American Airlines. Luckily we got the last 2 seats to Los Angeles for the following night, The ship personnel could not give us any other guidance, other than to tell us they had enough sea sickness medicine for every passenger, and the captain said we were going to need it. We ate dinner, went to sleep, had breakfast and went to the airport for our flight home. We were on the ship for 24 hours! Upon our return home we called Silversea to trfind out about a refund and we were told they would get back to us. We’ve been home 19 days and haven’t heard from anyone!! Read Less

Couldn't wait to have my first glass of champagne. The staff is helpful and friendly every day - not just the first day. We asked about a special meal for my husband (he loves escargot) , and of course - he got it! The singers are very talented, and had a nice variety of music. The Alaska ports were a bit cold for May, but the views are breathtaking. Eagles everywhere. The port of Homer had a sunny and warmer day, and the town looked like a postcard or a travel brochure. Had the best halibut fish and chips ever! Taking the train from Seward to the Anchorage airport was a highlight of the trip. That was a scenic ride thru the mountains with view of animals, glaciers and forest. It was all GREAT! Read Less

Chose this cruise because of the inclusive itinerary which included Vietnam where I served during the War in 1967 - 1968. Also, past experiences on Oceania have been excellent! Ship provided tours were good but not exceptional! Service everywhere aboard the ship was beyond excellent! Food assistance always available in the terrace for those needed help carrying their plates. Wine Steward was excellent - selection very good and reasonably priced. Table service in the main dining room was speedy and well plated. Head chef visited the main dining room tables almost every night and was there to answer any questions and fine tune the menu for individual quests. Entertainment was good, however, don’t expect broadway shows like you see on the big ships. Informative lectures on sea days and some days in port. Plenty of deck chairs and pool service was excellent. Don’t forget to have a milkshake or smoothie in Waves - they are to “die for” - best on the ocean!! Library is wonderful - plenty of new books and popular authors! TV movies available and several additional showings in the lounge. Excellent trivia and open bridge just about every afternoon Afternoon tea sure can ruin your appetite for dinner...really classy affair in the Horizon lounge. Embarkation and De-Embarkation were a breeze. Having been on 50+ cruises, this was one of the very best! Read Less

After the first few days the waitstaff prepared a salad for us for every meal so we at least had some good nutrition daily. Thoought the entertainment was for an older crowd and for the most part we did not attend. Didn't really participate in activities; would have like more TV channels for in room entertainment. Hired private guides so we have no comment about cruiseline excursions. The cabin was comfortable especially the bed, but could have used more storage; bigger night tables, more drawers, shelves. It seemed like the room could have the capacity for more. Would have liked to stay longer in some ports, especially overnight. Read Less

This was our 5th cruise with Oceania. We chose this particular one for its itinerary, starting in Tokyo and ending in Bangkok. It was the only one we found on an upscale cruise line that covered so much of the coast of Asia in less than 3 weeks. The choice of ports was excellent -- but be aware that it is extremely hot in Saigon and Bangkok in mid-April. The cruise started in Tokyo on March 24, presumably to avoid very chilly weather. The trade-off was the heat at the end of the tour. My husband and I are independent travelers and we never take shore excursions offered by the ship so I can't comment on the quality of the excursions. Instead we wander around on our own (using hop-on hop-off busses) or book through private booking companies -- which I highly recommend in Asia, as there are few signs in English. This cruise was a 50th anniversary trip for us so we splurged on the Owners Suite. The service and accommodations were between "extraordinary" and "over the top." But we found the same to be true at any of the "Concierge" level accommodations, so it's not necessary to book an Owners Suite to feel pampered. Our only complaint was that the quality of the dining experience has declined somewhat since our first cruise on Oceania in 2012. After Norwegian Cruise Line took over Oceania, we noticed some cost-cutting measures, including the quality of the food, which I would describe as "very good," as opposed to "excellent" when we first started cruising with Oceania. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to book a cruise with them, and in fact we have booked another one this September. Read Less

I choose this cruise because of the interesting itinerary but was disappointed with the change limiting the time spent in Shanghai and the terrible port in Japan which was added at the last minute Overall the ship was in desperate need of refitting,the food quality was poor the people handling the off shore excursions were not knowledgeable ,the entertainment was terrible ,the Captain was virtually invisible and the onboard activities while at sea were not interesting. The staff however were very attentive and did what they could to make the cruise more enjoyable i.e. Our butler was very attentive in bringing afternoon snacks but the quality was so poor we asked him to stop after a few days We did enjoy spending time in Tokyo before the trip and thought the Aman hotel was superb . At the end of the trip,we stayed in Hong Kong at the Peninsula Hotel and loved the experience. I have been in Hong Kong many times and have stayed mostly in the Intercontinental but would now recommend the Peninsula as hotel of choice in Kowloon We did meet at least four couples who were on the ship at the hotel and they all seemed to share the same experience regarding the Silver Shadow. Embarkation and disembarkation went easily. Ship was smaller than what we sailed in the past but better since we got to know just about everyone working on the ship. Expected the cabin to be more elegant although the bathroom was big and the bed comfortable it was still a little tight and a bit dated. TV was terrible and barely visible from the bed. Food was great and service was mostly good except for breakfast in the restaurant which was inexcusably poor. Difficult to get a good strong cup of coffee. Loved the afternoon tea. Entertainment was great and the entertainers fabulous. Fun activities every day. Our butler and cabin assistant were fantastic. Overall, all of the crew were helpful and cheerful. Ports were also fabulous but excursions were very disappointing. Staff did not seem to care when we had issues with our excursions. Not sure I would do Silver Seas again without checking other lines first. Read Less

This was my first cruise and I loved it. My suite (all cabins are suites) was nicer - and at least as large - as most hotel rooms I stay in. I had a veranda, but other than the veranda itself, even the smallest cabin on the ship is the same size. No "inside" cabins. Very nice. This cruise had "Gentleman Hosts," who among other things, organized a cocktail party each evening for the solo cruisers, of which I was one. This was a very nice touch by Silversea. There were 8 or 10 of us "solos", and we had a cocktail party each evening and then the Gentleman Hosts would escort us down to The Restaurant for dinner. It wasn't mandatory, but we never had to eat alone. Silversea's social game is very strong. I reserved several evenings in Le Champagne, the hoity-toity extra-cost restaurant, but after my first night I canceled the rest of my nights. Why? Because the pace was very, very slow. i'm sure it took at least 3.5 hours for dinner, and if you're eating alone it is too slow. Perhaps if I'd brought a book. This is going to sound trite, but team trivia was a major event every single day at 4:45. It was so major an event that some folks would not go on certain excursions because they would return after 4:45. I give the cruise director Kirk Detweiler the credit for this event being so popular. Enrichment - we had Kathy freaking Alexander doing enrichment: Astronaut, Space Station resident, NOAA head, incredible. Service - the crew is there to make your voyage the best you can have. That's all there is to it. Any crewmember will do any thing you ask. The second time they see you they will know your name, and if you've given any preferences to any other crewmember, they'll know about that, too. Excursions - generally excellent, although we did find it amusing that they did send us to a French restaurant for lunch in Kushiro, Japan. Children - no, I saw two children and only saw them once on the entire trip. Would I go again? I've already booked the E->W version of this in September (my birthday and retirement day.) Read Less

I chose this trip because of the abundance of sea days, which are my favourite. The ship is showing some age and looking a little worn in its finishes and decor, but I don't mind -- to me, there are far more important things to make a great cruise. My cabin was a window cabin with a partially obstructed view, but the obstruction was truly minimal. Crystal is known for having some of the smallest cabins among the luxury lines, but I found it had more than enough space for my 2.5 week cruise, and I know had there been two of us in the cabin the storage space still would have been enough. I don't know why there's a tub rather than a walk in shower, and I don't see a need for double sinks, but those are likely personal preferences. Also personal is the opinion of the food.......in my opinion, the food was terrific, ranging from very good to outstanding (particularly excellent in the two specialty restaurants). I didn't attend the evening entertainment, with the exception of the Dixieland Jazz performance, so I can't comment other than to say other passengers seemed to enjoy it. My shipboard routine is to do as little as possible other than relax, though I did take part in the daily trivia contests. I heard some of the lectures on the television in my cabin later, and they were interesting and in a bunch of different subjects. One of the nicest things about being aboard is the calm atmosphere and lack of interruptions: There are no announcements other than a daily status update, and no sales pitches or other things to distract from the relaxation available. I love walking the promenade or laying on the Lido deck with a book or puzzle as the ocean drifts by. \ The ship is showing its age, but there's a major refit due in the fall. Read Less

Returned yesterday from a Tokyo to Honolulu segment on Symphony. Overall, would rate this ship and the crew as excellent. We chose this cruise for a couple of reasons. First, we love sea days and it doesn't get any better than this. Second, we live in Honolulu and wanted the opportunity to leave the ship and be home in 10 minutes by cab. We have previously cruised on Silversea and Seabourn. I would give the Symphony a slight edge. It is a larger ship with more dining options and much better entertainment. Also, I found the crew to be a bit warmer and made us feel more comfortable. We opted for Dining by Reservation. It worked out for us very well. Found a table we liked with a great waiter. I would rate the food a little below Seabourn but not my much. The alternative dining options were very pleasant. Al-in-all a terrific cruise. Read Less

Having done two prior cruises with Silversea it was an easy decision to book a suite (deck 7**) from Vancouver to Tokyo via Alaska and Russia, believing it would be a great adventure, and it really was (mostly), but the inability to disembark for a day at Petrapavlovsk (rough weather) meant we were at sea for seven and a half days - far too long, but no fault of Silversea. The suite was spacious and appropriately appointed, but was tired and dated, and much in need of refurbishment. The sea state from Dutch Harbour to Kushiro was mostly rough to very rough, only abating as were neared Japan, generally making it a difficult to move around the ship. This meant there were long periods confined to the suite, revealing just how uncomfortable the couch and chairs really were. Compounding the physical discomfort, the flat screen LCD TV had very poor picture and sound quality, even though the choice of satellite channels was mostly news channels such as MSNBC, FOX, SKY and BBC broadcasting world events ad nausem. Fortunately the library had a good selection of fact and fiction. The food and service in all restaurants was excellent. The menu selection was varied with smaller portions, giving one the opportunity to savour everything on offer without overeating. The wine selections were also varied and of good quality. The musical entertainment was rather ordinary, not a patch on previous cruises on Silver Wind in 2008. For those who might be Blues Brothers fans, I would liken the entertainment to "Merv and the Magic Tones". In a word, boring. Fortunately the day/s were saved by the enrichment lectures, brilliantly presented by by Rick Senat and Phillip Hurst. The staff and crew onboard all deserve a special mention, but I must heap praise on Albert our butler, always there when needed and nothing was too much, Jess our maid with a smile that brought sunshine into our day, and the young maitre'd at Champagne whose service was above and beyond, and in my estimation, will go far in the hospitality industry. The ports in Alaska all seemed to be far flung outposts of civilisation, but the experience was marred by the proliferation of jewelry outlets that detracted from the character, heritage and history of the destination. I was unimpressed by the overt display of art and artworks for sale on board, but my strongest criticism is the trashy sandlemaker's stall on Deck 8. This is the sort of stuff you'd see at a Sunday market or a Country fair, and is totally out of place on a so-called luxury cruise ship. I should also note the overt marketing of jewely through the on board shop, with ambush points (AKA buying opportunities?) strategically positioned near various social activities. Would I cruise Silversea again? No. I mark down the tired state of the cabin, the amateurish entertainment, and the upselling inappropriate for a luxury cruise. Read Less
