just back from what was supposed to be a fantastic cruise due to the itinery which was brilliant, pity we cant say the same about the ship, where do you begin, having got to our cabin the dissapointment began although relatively clean the cabin was tired looking and in need of a refurb, this was supposed to be a delux balcony cabin not the words id choose but anyway the next day at breakfast we went up to the buffet restaurant and there wasnt a table to sit at ! we wandered round f or 10 minutes trying to find a table which we grabbed as soon as one was vacated, dont know why we bothered as the bacon was like leather and the eggs void of any taste that resembled an egg, i lived on cereal for the next fortnight, so dismayed at the breakfast we thought we would grab a sun bed with it being a sailing day, boy were we optimistic not a sunbed in sight, with 1,800 passengers there was probably enough sunbeds for a small fraction of that number we couldnt even find a table and chairs in the sun and this was the scenario for the whole of the fortnight. next we thought we would drown our sorrows, chance would of been a fine thing as the alcohol was weak or watered down, and so to the evening meal ... yes youve guessed queues down the corridor and when you got to the front we were told on several occasions oh you will have to take a pager we will call you when there is a table available, one night it was 10.0 clock we were having our evening meal which we complained about to the restaurant manager but we were ignored . this cruise cost us over £5500 and wasnt worth even half that, to sum up the ship takes on too many passengers than what it can cope with and will certaainly not be booking again wiyh them but will be oing back to p&o who are excellent cruise providers. 20+cruises with thomson,1st on discovery great ship ,staff, and entertainment, one gripe Broadway lounge next to live room the noise could be heard in the atrium we're a singer was trying to perform right next door to the live room ,3 venues right next to each other crazy!.the slug and lettuce pub was only used for quizzes and sometimes a group, good bar to meet and have a talk with people instead of daft quizzes and noise, perfect for background music and relax. Plus disappointed with no group or singer on stage in the afternoons when people get back on the ship ,we used to look forward to hear them on deck before the afternoon trivia questions. All in all great time had by all nearly!we must mention our room cleaners Rhea and Eddi very polite and always smiling made everyday a happy one thanks to them and all the bar staff and waiters for there hard work .corfu airport is a joke, waiting outside in a queue about 100 yards long in the heat waiting to put our cases in to the check out, sorry but not much help or info from tui staff.the much liked crew show was pathetic the backgroud pictures of the singer/artist took longer than the person singing,we are all for a bit of background on their lives but come on! maybe thats why there was only 4 crew members chose to sing, usually they put on a great show and receive the loadest cheers of the night.i hope this is a fair review and we will pick marella cruises again, thanks again to all the staff for a great cruise. Our group of 6 adults cruised the iconic isles cruise it was fantastic from start to finish apart from two nights of rough seas that prevented us docking in Zante but instead we docked in katakolon which was beautiful. Food and drink was excellent something to suit everyone bar staff gr8 and especially the waiter Nikola from serbea who was so good to us throughout the week. Inside cabin was compact but good for us and had everything we needed Reginald was our house keeper and always was so pleasent and friendly. Will definitely be booking again well done TUI.Embarkment and Disembarkment were exceptional smooth and as we were on an evening flight we were able to stay on book with full use of all inclusive facilities until our pick up time, luggage all colour coded and ready for our coach. Only downside was the entertainment got a bit repetitive and we didn't enjoy the comedian at all but still loads more to keep us entertained. Read Less

We went around the eastern med. The ship was ok all staff were good , friendly and worked very hard. Food was good but always busy in the island restaurant in mornings and at linsh time. Snack shack food was good at lunch you could get small portions of fish & chips or chicken & chips Ect. Gallery 47 restaurant was ok and we only had to wait about 10 to 15 mins to be seated you get a buzzer so you can go and have a drink while you are waiting. Bar staff were good in live bar and around the pool also when watching the shows always asking if you need anymore drinks. We paid to upgrade to a delux cabin with a balcony on seventh deck which was very nice the only down side which spoiled our holiday was that this cabin has a VERY VERY Bad vibration through out the cabin from the balcony to the front door this happened every time the engines were running day and although the night the bed was shaking we later found out that cabin 7088 has the same problem. We also had a problem with the airconditioning it was freezing cold and although we turned it right on to the warmest setting it was still freezing we reported it but nothing changed we were told you could not turn it off, Our cabin steward Lino and his team were very good nothing was to much trouble for him Thank you LINO. Been on few cruises in the last few years but would not go back on discovery 2. Corfu airport very small and massive que on way home. Some people were having to que outside as there flight was delayed. Upgraded to a balcony room on 6th floor which was lovely. Staff nice. Did three excursions. Two were on the electric bikes which were great. George and Sophie were great guides. Would highly recommend this. Did an excursion in Venice think it was called secret escape? It was awful not at all like it’s advertised. Would not recommend. Hot tubs were not hot and a few times only one worked. Service in restaurants and bars were very slow and it appeared the staff were not experienced. Never enough staff on. Entertainment was poor apart from opera singer Benjamin. Was really disappointed after spending a lot of money on this cruise.Would rather go on an older ship where you are looked after better. Read Less

We have never cruised before, and were a bit apprehensive This was an amazing holiday, top class entertainment, food, accom and service - can't wait to return. Some of the shows wouldn't have been out of place in the West End Choice of restaurants was great, and the gym facilities were adequate Destinations were ideal and we had enough time in each to get to relax, soak up the atmosphere before returning to ship. We just wish we had discovered cruising years ago- the perfect balance of relaxation, activity, good food and brilliant service- Tui should be very proud of Marella Discovery 2, its staff and crew- there was a sense of pride in the way everyone went about their daily tasks only recommendation- more effort into the open air cinema programme- Hook, Jumanji, BIG and Ghostbusters but only approx. 10 children on board And charging for wifi seemed a bit cheeky Read Less

This was our first ever cruise. We were a bit dubious at first and wasn’t sure if it was for us, but after a couple of days, we found our feet and began to enjoy it. The day at sea, the boat was very very busy (understandably), the pool area looked like seal colony, people were packed in like sardines, which I didn’t like. Days at destinations was fine - plenty of room. The staff are EXCELLENT! Very friendly and always happy to help you and serve you. Certain staff really stood out ... the Head Waiter Josico ... great manager and really goes out of his way to help. Charity the waitress in the steak restaurant is just lovely! Sofie on the destination desk was lovely and so helpful. Some of the entertainment is fantastic ... our favourites were the singer Maynia / Jessica Drake on the Piano / the comedian is a must! He’s so so funny. Those 3 entertainers were the highlight of our cruise. The Steak restaurant for a supplement is well worth it! The food and service are amazing! The only thing that was a bit of a let down was that every day you would be pretty much guaranteed to be served a drink that was not 100% clean. We sent back lots of drinks because lots of glasses had lipstick marks on them. Read Less

We went on this cruise because we had been on the Marella Dream in June, we had such a good time on the Dream we decided to go on the Discovery, so we could compare the two. we enjoyed both to be honest, although the Dream is smaller and older ship than the Discovery I'd say the Dream just piped the Discovery for us. We thought the Dream managed the people it had on board better than the Discovery, it just seemed to us that there were to many people for them to cope with comfortably. Don't get me wrong the staff were fantastic and worked very hard to make our stay as good as they could, we just thought the management had packed to many people on the ship. To give you an example if you were out and about at night there didn't seem to be enough seating for all the customers, I'm not sure if some parts of the Discovery were more popular than others but it did look odd that there were a lots of people having to stand because there were no seats available. Food on the Discovery was good and plentiful, we did have an issue with the bacon on the breakfast buffet which I have written to them about but that was all, just going back to the subject of room, we went as a couple and when we went to the 47 gallery or the 47 restaurant we wanted a table for two which we did get, but the tables were only separated by a few inches so there was no chance of a intermate or private conversation because you were so close to the next table. Now again don't get me wrong we are not loners and can mix with the best of them, but if I wanted to make eyes at my wife I don't want the women on the next table getting the wrong idea because we so close together. The cabins were nice and the staff kept them clean, the places we stopped were good, except Santorini which was a disappointment the place would be lovely if it wasn't for the vast amount of people, we expected it to be busy but goodness me it was packed to the rafters. My wife has a disability and walking is a problem so it was even harder for her to get around because the crowds, there were no places to rest for her because all the places were full, so we decided to go back to the ship, but even this was a big problem because the queue for the cable car back down the mountain was so long its was a long hot wait of 20 minutes before we got back down. So if you go on this cruise been warned its busy and hot at the top the crowds are mad and in our minds Santorini has that far away look, it looks better far away. All the other destinations on the trip were better and we enjoyed them. Over all we had a good time we will go again with TUI next year on a different ship and see how they do, look out for my review. Read Less

Aegean Shores – TUI Marella Discovery 2 (7 day cruise) This was our second TUI cruise and overall it was enjoyable and due to the ports of call. Booking I booked through the TUI offices in West Lothian and spoke to a lady called Lynne. She was absolutely fabulous and I can’t thank her enough for her time and assistance. Flights and Transfers The flights were on time and the in-flight service was excellent. My only issue is that once checked in we then had to collect our cases on arrival and haul them to coaches. Previously, once we’d checked in, the next time we saw our cases was outside our cabin door. Cabin Our cabin was spacious and I only have praise for housekeeping staff, Irinya who serviced our cabin on a daily basis and was excellent. Food We ate almost exclusively in the 47° restaurant for breakfast, dinner and the occasional lunch. The waiter service was friendly and efficient. Sometimes we had to wait for a table but never longer than 20 minutes. The food was varied and of good quality. Unfortunately the food elsewhere on board was not so good. Snack Shack – This busy pool side food area serves chips, battered fish and chicken wings, all day EVERY DAY! This became very monotonous which was frustrating and disappointing. Also the sandwiches were wrapped in a paper bag and had minimum fillings of very poor quality. The salads came in a flimsy cardboard container that fell apart once you picked it up and the salad was 80% lettuce. The Glass House – Only visited this once and that was enough. Very poor selection of food available which was hidden behind glass counters, very poor quality and variety. The Islands – Busy self-service restaurant, only visited this for afternoon tea. Again very disappointed in the quality and variety of food offered here. Sandwiches made with thick sliced bread and minimum fillings. Selection of cakes (if you could call them cakes) was of very poor quality and the only hot choice on EVERY DAY was sausage roll! With the exception of the 47° restaurant the food on offer was of poor quality and cheap! Drinks It is an all-inclusive package so most drinks are included in the price. My only issues with this are: * Unless you pay an extra £50 bottled water is chargeable * When ordering drinks if you don’t specify the brand name of the alcohol you want you get served the cheap rubbish! * The bar staff were very thin on the ground and on occasions you had to wait some considerable time to get served. And the bar staff had trouble keeping a check of who was next to being served and on occasions just wandered off. * The cocktails were very disappointing, the bar staff simply threw them together so each time you had one they tasted different. Also the glasses were never decorated or accompanied with fruit that you would expect to be part of the cocktail experience – again very disappointing. Entertainment This was the most disappointing aspect of the cruise, with the exception of the Broadway Show Lounge. Elsewhere on the ship the entertainment was shabby, boring and a holiday camp could have provided a better standard. There were 3 grand pianos on board, one in the 47° restaurant, the Atrium and the Live Room. The only piano played was in the Live Room. So no background pianist during dinner or in the Atrium, despite the fact a pianist was on board. In fact on one occasion two of the entertainment staff were holding an evening dance class in the Atrium bar and the music came from a laptop placed ON TOP of the piano! It seems more common that the Atrium is used for entertainment when a pianist playing music or taking requests would have been more than sufficient and relaxing. On the last night the entertainment staff gave a farewell musical event in the Atrium bar, they were all casually dressed, un co-ordinated and singing to a backing track which was very amateurish, uninspiring and cheesy. The opera singer was superb but singing Time to Say Goodbye on the last night was a cringe-fest. On the day of departure many of us had late flights but had to vacate our cabins by 08.30. As a result passengers were sat in the Atrium and other bars killing time and milling around. During the whole day no entertainment was provided and the shops were shut. Passengers sat around as if they were in an airport departure lounge or doctors surgery, very disappointing. Clearly an example of key staff assigned other duties and a possible reflection of how understaffed the ship was. Excursions The excursions were more expensive than our last cruise and we only booked two as a result. The Athens excursion cost £65pp. We set off about 9am and were back on the ship by 1pm. During this time we spent just over an hour at the Acropolis, the rest of the time was spent on the bus with places of interest pointed out to us as we drove past. This was by no means value for money and I certainly would not recommend this excursion to anyone. Although our guide was excellent and well informed and her capabilities not a result if any input from Marella. The bicycle ride in Crete cost £36pp. On our last cruise we took a bicycle excursion in Ibiza which we thoroughly enjoyed. They are not cheap but as we enjoyed the bike ride we booked again in Crete expecting similar. I have to say that the staff in charge of the bike excursion were fantastic (Sophie & George) and I have no complaints about them, however I do feel disappointed with the excursion. My complaint centres the duration and time spent actually cycling. Within 20 minutes of starting we had a 45 minute stop in Heraklion, which was fine. We then cycled for approx. 30-40 mins to some obscure beach and spent about 11/2 hours there. We then headed back to the ship and arrived approx. 2pm. All in all very disappointing due to short duration and minimum time actually cycling! Summary Aspects of the cruise were enjoyable and met our expectations but it was crystal clear that TUI were trying to cut costs wherever possible, particularly the standard and quality of food offered, the entertainment and the number of staff. It’s tempting to say that it was a floating holiday camp when, with a little creative thought and small expense, it could be so much more than it was. It has certainly made us think twice about booking again with TUI. Read Less

Hi all , myself and my family decided after a lot of mixed feelings to book a cruise and as this was our first we decided to do 1 week cruising and 3 days in a hotel . Let me start by saying that myself and my family were all very excited about setting sail for the first time as TUI have a good name in value for money cruises. As it was our first cruise we went with our friends who have been on 3 other Tui cruises and highly recommended them . This is how me and my family rated the Tui Discovery 2. customer service - very poor many staff had the wrong attitude towards paying customers , I had to bite my tongue on more then one occasion, the amount of time spent standing at the bar waiting to get served was incredible, they need more staff. The only staff that were friendly and made me smile were cabin cleaners . Thanks Lino. Food - the island self service restu rant is very poor , the gallery restaurants were hit and miss and not a great choice, glass house wasn't bad but very small portions and only seated a small amount of people , the snack shack food was OK for fast food, not something you would have day in day out . The other restaurants that you pay extra for were all booked up within the first two hours of being on the ship, so we couldn't get in at all. Shops - don't open until 18:30 and are completely rubbish unless you want tobacco or designer items . Pool - this was more like a kitchen sink . Sunbeds - Tui says you can't hold a sunbed for more then an hour if your not present , that's rubbish as people pegged towels to beds and we're gone all day . Very crampt deck area . Glass house pool - nice but couldn't understand why children had to leave the indoor pool by a certain time , it's hot outside and the kids wanted to play in the pool. And here is my biggest gripe with this disappointing ship, Entertainment - without a shadow of a doubt the worse entertainment I have ever experienced on a holiday , either live music ,live music ,live music, dance lessons, or bingo , I expected so much more from a company like TUI. Cruise - never again with Tui. Read Less

I got on the discovery 2 at Corfu and got of there as well. I was on the ship for a week and the destinations are lovely Santorini and Rhodes have to be my favourite. The cruise is really good the activity's for kids are a climbing wall a mini golf 9 holes 2 swimming pools one inside and one outside also there is a games room called hideout for the children to chill out and play on the Xbox and the football table. The entertainment is fantastic with 4 different venues to choose from and they have a casino. the bars were clean and sold a verity of alcohols from shots to beer to cocktails. the crew are so friendly saying hello and always ready to help really good custom. The sail away party was absolutely fantastic with live performances from DJ Tomas and a band that I cant remember there name and a flag parade to see were parts of the crew come from. definitely arrange with TUI they are stars amazing job Read Less

This was our first cruise, so we had nothing to compare against, but the 4 people in our party all thought the cruise on Merrella Discovery 2 was excellent. The ship and the cabins were spotlessly clean, the crew are permanently going around cleaning. The majority of the crew were very pleasant and helpful, you will always get one or two who aren't, but they were very much the minority. The quality of the food was exceptional and there would be something for the fussiest of eaters. We dined mainly in the Island restaurant which is self service, but the food here is superb. I can't agree with a previous reviewer who said the food was poor. We also dined in the Gallery restaurant and 47 Gallery restaurant both of which is waiter service, again the food was excellent. We did have to queue and wait for a table in both of these restaurants, but it wasn't a problem. We asked for a table for 4 and was given a bleeper device for the restaurant staff to contact you when a table was available. the longest we waited was approx. 25 minutes. There are two more restuarants on board for which you have to pay a supplement to eat in. We didn't bother as we felt there was no need. Maybe if we had been on a two week cruise we may have done. .We had a superior balcony cabin, which again was excellent. It was a good size and never felt cramped. If there was a small criticism, it would be the shower cubicle could have don with being a touch bigger.Having said that, I am a more mature person of age and never had a problem having a shower. We all thought the entertainment was very good on board ship, especially the live shows. Yes they aren't West End standard, but very very enjoyable, and the entertainers work very hard. We went all inclusive, and felt we had our monies worth, again TUI do try to charge extra for certain things but if you are careful about what you asking for you can do the whole cruise without incurring additional charges. As for the morning announcements from the Captain from the bridge, we all thought this was a good way to start the day. Captain Chris was very informative telling you about the place we were moored and the weather for the day. We had no problem with this. All in all as a first cruise we had a fantastic time, and will certainly cruise on this ship again. Read Less

It's our 3rd cruise with Tui and afraid to say the worst. Food quality has declined and fights have been delayed. The excursions were poorly managed even from the tui run ones. We only had one tender to shore when we booked but ended up having 2 due to other cruise liners taking our spot. Then delaying our tours We have seen fights on ship which is very unnecessary. Rules such as shorts in the restaurants have been overlooked and people just get away with what they like (hence the fighting and lack of respect towards crew). They are by far the cheapest cruise company we have seen but unfortunately it's still a lot of money to us and we expect better service. Its a shame as we have enjoyed our cruise with Tui in the past but each year they have got gradually worse. Will not be going again with them. Read Less

We chose this cruise because our daughter and husband with the grand children had already booked and asked if we would come along. We would normally go outside school holidays. We generally enjoyed the holiday. All the staff in all departments were great and the guests easy to mix with. Food was good even though the breakfasts became a bit boring. Snack shack was excellent, especially the fish and chips. Small potions but it was a snack. The entertainment was okay. Guest entertainers were very good, but the theatre troupe were not the best singers. Bit tinny. Being All Inclusive concerned me initially, but nobody appeared drunk and everyone was friendly. Mind, the drinks did seem weak. Cocktails, weak or not, were excellent. Talking to other people on the cruise we found most had only ever sailed with Tui (Thomson) so they had no idea of the quality from other cruise companies. This was a back to back 2 x 7-day cruise. Never again. Change over day was awful. Many facilities closed, or times changed. Empty bars with no staff to serve you and on the evening of changeover no service at all until the Muster had been performed for the new guests. I complained at reception stating Princess Cruises would never do this. Only to be answered with, 'yes we are not as good as Princess'. We were informed of a captain’s 'party' for Tui past customers. They let us attend after I pointed out we were on a back to back cruise therefore the first week was a past cruise. Normally when you get on a cruise ship you expect a wow factor. Not the case with Discovery 2. The refurbishment, 18 months earlier, was, in my opinion cheap. Done at a price. I was in the building trade as a designer for 40 years. The LED colour change in the atrium was badly installed. The general lighting was fluorescent. Everyone uses LED now which tells me the refurb was done cheaply. But then again it is an old ship. We have been with Cunard, P & O, Carnival, Princess and Fred. All were higher quality than this. Only Fred had a worse room. Princess, Cunard and Carnival are not exclusive to Brits and therefore other nationalities demand higher standards. Other reviewers have said this was a cheap holiday. I don’t think £2700 each is cheap even in August. We have sailed with Princess for less, including all our drinks and excursions. The room was okay but looked 'tired'. No fridge? We have not been on any other cruise without a fridge. One great touch was the USB sockets for charging devices. Bedding was old, towels threadbare. No toiletries other than shower gel. Only plus was tea and coffee facilities. Ceiling tile hanging out of ceiling. Not fitted properly. An extra bed, if needed, pops out of the ceiling? Awful. Corridors to the rooms were drab. Read Less

I decided to book the Greek Mystique cruise as my wife has had surgery recently and really needed to recuperate and recover. After check in at Gatwick we didn't see our luggage again until delivered to our cabin I can not tell you how amazing that was not to have to face the hustle and bustle of the airport baggage carousels! I rater enjoyed the main resturaunt as they operate an open seating dining plan so we were able to dine with new people every evening, which when we usually cruise on Seabourn and Azamara we have a fixed table and dining companions for the duration of the cruise -so Marella has hit on a good idea on the occasions where one may be sitted on a dining table with 'cruise snobs'.Which in the past we have had to endure! We are retired although a young 59 and 61, we tend to book 4 cruises per year one for each season. We have one Seabourn and one Azamrara then 2 cheaper options which this year is Marella and Cruise & Maritime to try the other end of the market. The ship Celebration was old as described on CC.reviews, but it was perfectly clean and comfortable. We prefer to have waiter service at meals as my wife isn't always able to stand and queue for periods of time and apart from the very last morning when there was literally not a seat to be had this worked perfectly for us. Our cabin steward was superb so although tips are included we left him cash in an envelope cabin was cleaned and towels replenished twice daily. My wife purchased two Radley handbags which she said were great value. we are not drinkers so didn't opt for the AI Drinks package(due to my wife's medication). We did take excursions which although costly were not exhorbitant but much more importantly safe for my wife's comfort. We ate in Mistrals which was a delight -highly recommended especially drunken prawns delicious! The Ports of call were delightful especially KOTORin Mo ntenegro and sailing out of Dubrovnik at night ! STUNNING. keeping the best till last- just has to be the entertainment. THE showteam were leaving and a new team and Cruise Director was starting the week after we disembarked. They were amazing and the show Africa was wonderful. We really thought it couldn't get any better until Monday when the Guest Act came on to do his show. His name was Christopher Gee and he was superb, my wife laughed so much it was sheer joy to behold. And his comedy impressions were stunning-the thing we could't work out was how can every voice he did be so accurate and yet he even manages to look like each person he takes on. His Tommy Cooper had everyone in stiches, and his Eric Morecambe had us all fighting off a tear at the much loved comedian but the absolute hIghlight was his one man tribute to Dave Allen it was so perfect even down to him holding a whiskey glass with only half a forefinger, his attention to detail was astounding. He recieved a richly deserved standing ovation! The neXt night was his second show and there simply wasn't a seat to be had and extra chairs from the bars were brought in, but the show was totally different Alan Carr/Michael Macintyre/Ozzy/he also did an hilarious BORIS AND Donald Trump had us ill with laughter very up to date you could hear a pin drop and that was after midnight. He was very personable young man and told us he will be on Marella Dream later in the year so we are booking that one too! We love the shows and we don't watch a lot of comedians to be fair- but I just had to post this review as everyone is quick to complain but not always ready to say a big well done Marella for booking a comedian impressionist that did nor offend one single person no un PC material or smut involved just FUNNY!!! The entire ship was talking about him the next day. in all one has to commend Marella ,especially at their price point as I assure you we have got much less from paying 4 times more!!! Read Less

Our travel agent Thomas Cook recomended this cruise ship. The told us so many things which were actually untrue. We paid for a deluxe Grande suite with a concierge and although the suite was nice the rest was a complete disappointment. When we embarked, there was no one to welcome us on board. We had to ask where to go as new passengers and this was unclear. Eventually we found reception and that was not a great experience. The food in the 47 degree restaurant was so bad we sent it back twice and then decided to eat in the self service restaurant. This was also a hit or a miss. The late night snacks in the inside pool area were great and perfect for a midnight supper. All the staff were great apart from some reception staff. Mareja was always helpful. At the bar on the 9th deck, where smoking is permitted, some of the girl waitresses were dreadful. One told me I couldn't have my drink in a tall glass when I had been having it all day. However, mark, Denni and Romel were wonderful. The live entertainment was good and the comedian was particularly good. The Shows at night started to blend into each other. The first stop was Santorini. Beautiful but very busy as several ships had docked for the day. A good pair of comfortable shoes are required. Overall, captain Chris tried to do a good job but if the food isn't great and apologies for this are only given to people in superior accommodation then his head of restaurants, Antonio needs to review not only his staff but his protocols. I was made aware that their were two deaths on the ship and the pianist was put off the ship for assaulting another entertainment staff member. I rarely saw security, perhaps they need to be more aware of the amount of alcohol being sold. The highlight was visiting Rhodes. A beautiful place and lots to see and buy. Read Less

Best cruise I’ve been on. Top marks for an amazing experience. Facilities excellent, staff were incredibly and made this so perfect in every way. Cabin service was worthy of 5 stars, thanks to Eli and Ella who were wonderful. A big thanks to Islands restaurant where the 2 most handsome men Raphael and Stefan looked after me. These guys were terrific. This ship was super clean thanks to all the hard working staff. I would highly recommend this holiday to everyone. Whatever your age or ability there is something to suit all. Remember to try afternoon tea from 3 to 5 in Islands, I’ve honestly never had such a delicious selection. The only problem is the food is too tempting but you can walk the track on deck 10 to exercise after. Or visit the gym to burn off those extra calories. This is a truly fantastic holiday and I wish I could have stayed another week. Read Less

Great entertainment, The ship is falling apart.our cabin smelled fusty and the bolts from our cabin door we found on the floor, windows not cleaned internally despite us asking, we was charged for things from mini bar that was never there(coca cola) the chocolate out of date, All stairways on board are extremely smelly a horrid dusty smell When on deck 1 embarking or disembarking smell of sewage is over powering and you have to hold your breathe as much as possible and get through as quick as possible When calling lift mid ships deck 4 my fingers disappeared into the wall when I pressed the button. As I tried to pull my hand back the switch trapped my fingers injuring them, I reported it and was just told maintenance would be informed I was not asked how I was or to fill my n an accident report, despite reporting this twice on board and twice since home have received no response what so ever from Tui Ship needs complete over Hall painting over cracks and rust is not sufficient The entertainment and food also activities is a good standard what a shame they let their selves down with a reactive approach to maintenance intstead of a proactive approach Also a health and safety together with a reporting of accidents and a monitoring system put it place Prevention is always better than a cure or as in my case they ignored my report of the incident twice on board and 3 emails since arriving home to this day I have not had any reply from either Tui or Marella The foreign staff on board we found very friendly the uniformed European staff we found to be less so mostly ignoring the passengers Read Less

My wife and I were on the first sailing of the Discovery 2, in 2017, when it was under the TUI flag has anything changed in a year? – Please read on. We booked for two weeks taking the Aegean Shores and Adriatic Explorer Cruises We decided to upgrade our cabin to deck 7 “inside plus” but hadn’t realised the affect that no natural light would have and definitely would not recommend this so-called upgrade. The food was good albeit repetitious in both the 47 Degrees and Gallery 47 Restaurants however both restaurants served a very good Merlot which was part of the all-inclusive package. In order to get to the evening entertainment a few times we had dinner in the Island buffet restaurant which offered a good range of well cooked dishes. The Islands restaurant is buffet service only. At breakfast and lunch times it is very overcrowded with people wandering around attempting to find somewhere to sit. At dinner time it is much less busy. Draught wine and beer is available at lunch and dinner times. The beer is good John Smiths bitter and Foster’s lager the wine is best left alone. On deck 9 there is the Snack Shack offering excellent fish and chips at lunch time and other items throughout the day. The all-inclusive package has degraded since our first trip. Bombay Sapphire Gin is now a supplement as are a number of the cocktails and I cannot understand why you have to pay for the bottle of temperate bottled water in the cabin. Most of the shows in the Broadway Show Lounge we had seen before with the exception of a very good comedian and a dance show that was choreographed by Anton Du Beke. In the evening entertainment in the Atrium area is very poor. There is either a singer – guitarist, with a limited repertoire who seems to suffer with laryngitis and what his voice lacks in quality is compensated for in terms of volume. Then there is the saxophonist loud, boring and if I hear Baker Street again I will not be responsible for my actions. And finally, a singer with a selection of songs from Oklahoma – simply awful. There is nowhere on Discovery 2 where, in the evening, you can sit and talk quietly without having you ears blown away – if there is we never found it. I did hear a fellow passenger raise this issue at reception however I never heard the reply. If I haven’t raised enough negative points here is the best one. As previously mentioned we were on the Discovery 2 first sailing so by coincidence we were on Discovery 2 for its first birthday. There was a birthday party around the pool with a cake and drinks the large video screen showed a continuous video of the ship being refitted. At the time we were moored in Venice where we had been for the day. The video screen then showed a singer who was on stage and she was singing “Time to say Goodbye” when the screen flickered and eventually went blank. At this time we were heading up the Grand Canal to the sea. We had been travelling for less than 30 minutes when the ship came to a stop. We were subsequently told that there had been a breakdown of the “propulsion system” and that we were going to be towed back to the berth we had just left. As a consequence we were berthed overnight in Venice whereas we should have been on our way to Split a town my wife and I had never visited and was one reason we booked this cruise. Therefore once the ship was repaired we spent yet another day at sea and the next port was Dubrovnik. As compensation for an extra day at sea and missing our visit to Split we were given a £25 credit each to our cabin bill which we consider to be a despicable gesture on the part of Marella. One positive note on which to finish. We were invited to a reception for previous cruise travellers, something Thomson or Tui had never bothered with before and hopefully is an indication that Marella feel that they should acknowledge customer loyalty. We’ve just returned from a really lovely Aegean Meze cruise on the Dream, staying in one of the new balcony cabins. We booked quite late for this holiday. Quite new to cruising, we have sailed with Celebrity in the past and very much like it, but the Meze fitted in with our timescale. So it was our first cruise with Thomson/Marella, although we have in the past enjoyed excellent package holidays with Thomson. So in spite of some poor reviews of the ship (which all companies receive from time to time) we were quite confident of having a good holiday and went with an open mind. Now we are back home we feel we would definitely sail with Thomson/Marella again and are reluctant to rule out the Dream, but sadly, next time we would probably look for a ship with a wider range and location of balconies. The Dream is a lovely, well maintained, older style ship and the crew are second to none, with good food and a great itinerary. The vast majority of people seemed to be having a wonderful time and so did we. I must emphasize how much we both enjoyed the cruise. But we always choose a balcony cabin, and the problem was that the new balcony cabins had been placed towards the back of the ship, presumably over where the engines are. That’s why we noticed a fair bit of vibration at night and this seemed to be amplified by the metal or whatever the fabric of the walls and ceiling was, which tended to rattle. My husband has hearing aids and once they were out the rattle did not seem to worry him, but I sometimes had trouble getting off to sleep. Noise from busy deck 8, where the shops and much of the entertainment is held, was not a problem because the cabins were down their own corridor, but the dividing walls of the balcony cabins were very thin and so it was possible to hear quite a lot from the next door cabins. I think that when everyone realised this, we all tried not to make much noise, so it wasn’t too bad. Also I am sure that there are people who have stayed in these cabins and who have not noticed any problem, but our experience is as above. Otherwise, the cabin had plenty of space and was clean and well kept. It’s worth noting that towards the midship and the front, there was no vibration so I am sure that any cabins sited here would be better from the noise point of view, if you are not bothered about having a balcony. A more detailed review is as follows: BOOKING: We had booked by telephone, which brought us to the Manchester office and the girls there were really efficient! That was a really good first impression. If they had to find something out, they would ring us back which was most helpful. When booking cruises with Cebrity, we have had to hang on for ages while something was checked out, or be passed from one operator to another. Not so with Thomson. Everything was sorted out to our satisfaction and the paperwork received promptly. Wonderful. We would definitely book again with them! TRAVEL: It was the first time we had done a fly-cruise as we normally sail from Southampton, but the journey went well. Living in Norfolk we could fly from Norwich, and found that at all stages of the journey to the ship there was a representative there to point us in the right direction. At Corfu we were directed to a coach straight away, handed over our luggage and were driven to the port terminus building where we checked in. We were on the ship less than an hour after the plane landed. IMPRESSIONS OF THE SHIP: We had landed at dusk and it was dark by the time we approached the ship, which was all lit up and looking very attractive with its fairy lights. On entering we were greeted in a friendly way and the ship was spotless. We went straight to the cabin for a brief moment before heading off to the dining room and our cases were just arriving. We always choose to have a balcony as it gives us a bit of private space and we like to see the sea. So we had been delighted to be able to book one on the Dream as there are only a few of them. It was of a good size and very clean and sweet smelling, kept pristine by Bambang, our lovely and friendly attendant. The shower was of a good size and with a sliding door. The bed was large and there was plenty of hanging and drawer space. So far so good. There was a lot going on on the ship with a good band, the Top Men, playing for the sailaway, too loudly for us codgers but talented nonetheless. In the dining room and elsewhere we loved the older, retro type of fittings and brass light shades and fittings. In other reviews, remarks have been made about rust and smells, but to us the ship looked well maintained, spotlessly clean and not offensive to the nose. The ship appeared “old style” (rather than “old”, meaning past it, as some reviewers have alleged). There was also a lovely promenade deck to walk on. We did not use the pools or the sun loungers, but there appeared to be plenty of the latter around the ship. There was always cleaning going on and everything gleamed. STAFF: I cannot speak too highly of the staff and the crew. Everyone was really lovely, friendly and helpful and intent on making our holiday the best. We would certainly sail with Thomson, or Marella, again for this reason alone, if not on the same ship. OTHER PASSENGERS: Whereas on our Celebrity cruises we have sailed with a multinational crowd, which is also nice, on the Dream they seemed to be mainly Brits from all corners of the UK with a mixture of families, it being half term, younger and older couples. There was a really nice homely atmosphere and nearly everyone seemed to be having a great time. There were some issues, I understand with the toilets, but the staff seemed to be trying to put them right as quickly as possible. FOOD: It being mainly for the Brits, the type of food did mainly cater for the British, with choices such as lasagne or couscous salad which are nowadays part of British fare as well as the usual British grub. We don’t have any special needs so I couldn’t comment on those; but I have to say that we did eat extremely well, and most of the time we enjoyed our food as much as we have done on the Celebrity ship that is renowned for its dining. We did note the absence of anything like a themed evening, for example for Greek or Turkish food during the cruise, seeing that we were visiting these countries, but we did come home several pounds heavier anway! We did not bother with any of the speciality restaurants, mainly eating in the Lido buffet for breakfast and lunch (very good) where we always got a seat without any trouble and in the main dining room for most dinners, which were on the whole very good, the waiters working extremely hard. ENTERTAINMENT: There is a lot of talent on board with the resident band, and the duos Two Intense and Heart to Heart, who performed around the ship. Also I really enjoyed the young singing/dancing group of 10 guys and girls, when they performed the show “Africa” on the last night in the theatre. THE ITINERARY: The Aegean Meze itinerary was fabulous, and there were many great tours on offer which we thought were very good value and well organised. We visited Knossos on Crete, Delos from Mykonos, Ephesus and the House of Mary, from Kusadasi, and Athens from Piraeus, and they were all wonderful places. The weather was very kind to us, apart from thunderstorms on the morning we were in Kusadasi, but the rain soon cleared away. Our final stop in Katakolon we found to be really attractive and green, a good place to walk, with lots of interesting little shops and prices that were very reasonable to buy souvenirs. We are back on Celebrity next year as we had already booked a cruise to the Baltic, however in the future I am sure we will be back on a Marella cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had been on the Dream twice before and we were quite happy with it so we thought it a good prospect to go with the Dream again. Two people in our party of four needed assistance with walking any distance or standing for long periods especially through airport security or standing in queues. My wife (rods and screws in her back) and the other person in our party with a disability (Parkinsons) requested well in advance when the holiday was booked that some assistance would be needed at the airport for reasons mentioned. I won't go into details but in Aberdeen going out and in Corfu on arrival the assistance was not there with both people abandoned at the airport. On arrival back in Aberdeen we waited one hour at the carousel to collect our luggage. There were good points and not so good points about the trip as far as the cruise was concerned. Our cabin was on deck 5. We had booked a cabin with a window. It looked like areas of the cabin had not been dusted for weeks. The shower leaked at the spray head where the washer had perished and a poor attempt had been made with plumber's tape to fix it. The main shower head didn't spray properly and water went everywhere. I gave up and just strip washed instead. However our cabin steward was very friendly and helpful and tidied the room twice daily apart from the dust. Dirty towels were replaced every day with clean towels. There was dust in many areas of the ship which was not there on previous cruises. I only once saw a crewman with a spray and a duster whereas previously the ship was continually cleaned. The entertainment each evening was a bit of a let down since some of the male singers couldn't pitch their notes or keep their keys. The female singers and dancers were excellent but this only made the males appear to be tone deaf. On a happier note the four of us dined morning and evening in the Orion restaurant where the food was freshly cooked and served with great enthusiasm by the waiters. There was plenty of coffee or tea and cold water at any time of the day. My wife and I went on two excursions and the prices had gone up a bit from last year. However the excursions were very interesting and informative with excellent tour guides who knew their subject very well. Greek people are very welcoming and don't hassle you in the streets like the Turkish people do where every few yards there is a hawker who can't take no for an answer. WiFi in cafes are free but £50 per week on the ship. The shops in the ship are cheaper than the shops ashore - watch for special prices and bargains. We noticed some changes since last year. The crew all wore smart uniforms instead of the Bahama shirts as previously. There seemed to be less crew and they didn't sing or joke this year but went through a process but the joy seemed to have gone. We noticed that there were no more trays to carry your food to the table and the water glasses were a fraction of the size. At the end of the cruise the process of transfers went smoothly and the assistance was better to help the disabled onto the plane and also on return to Aberdeen. Would we go on Marella Dream again? No! Read Less

Let me start by saying I am very surprised at the Negative reviews I keep reading regarding this Ship. I do understand you cant please everyone but to slate it like others have I find quite surprising. I travelled with my Husband and we both had a fantastic week aboard. This was our first cruise. I felt very excided and we both were not disappointed when we saw the ship for the first time at Corfu port. Booked in smoothly, once we found our cabin we were both pleased with the size no problems there. Good shower. Staff and entertainment team worked so hard and we enjoyed all 7 evenings. Service on board was good, with very friendly staff. Also the Ship was very clean. FOOD, this is were I feel people are being very harsh. I am a Celiac which means I can't eat Gluten and let me tell you my clothes didn't fit me properly towards the end of our week. I never went hungry once, even Gluten Free Bread. We found the food to be hot, tasty with PLENTY of choice and I Thank You very much for catering for peoples different diets. It can't be easy. We will definitely be Cruising again with Thomson, the organization from start to finish was excellent. So Thank You for a fab week and see you soon. x Read Less

No sleep for first three night due to noisy mechanical faults in corridor affecting eight cabins in a row, blocked toilets everywhere on board, water coming up through vent in showe least 2 inches deep. Workmen outside cabin for three days unable to fix the faults. Filthy sunloungers covered in food spilt drinks etc these loungers never wiped over before they was put away. The smell of dirty old fat with poor quality food from the outside Liddo bar, inside the Liddo restaurant was average to poor quality food barely warm daily. The Medusa restaurant average food again not hot. Dirty decking areas from spilt drinks with glasses remaining from two nights before. False advertising and misleading pricing in the on board shop, lipsticks clearly priced direct underneath the item with NO other items in the window at £6.50 but in the shop priced as £16.50, manager uncooperative and rude when this was pointed out. This is only the tip of the iceberg, I have photos to support everything I have stated. This was our very first cruise but we went with my sister who has been on 20 cruises and the second time on this ship, she couldn't believe how standards have fallen and how must smaller the all inclusive package had gotten, all inclusive doesn't mean that at all. There is a definite feeling of TUI (Thompson) crabbing every penny they can and even misleading people to get it. We chose our cabins with 20 cruises worth of experience and paid £47 each more to ensure peace and tranquility, how wrong could we have been. I don't take any medication at all but after three nights with very little sleep I had to result in asking another passenger foe sleeping tablets. The all inclusive package was reduced and difficult to work out with staff making mistakes resulting in passengers being billed. The itinerary was changed from Turkey to Greece disappointed we still chose to go only to have the new itinerary cut short due to late docking or no docking at all in Rhodes, this was due to the tug breakdown. This ship goes for a complete refurbishment in November and quite frankly it is in desperate need of it now, our cabin number was 5022 through to 5038 all suffered the same troubles. Read Less

We chose this cruise as this was our first time and we didn't want our holiday to be to formal.we flew from Glasgow to corfu, no hitches, arrived at corfu was met by thomson reps ,they told us where to go,was given all the documents for our cabins and luggage got to the ship and demonstration was straight forward. The staff can't do enough for you they are so pleasant always greet you with a smile. Cabin was just what you need no complaints, the steward was very nice ,our steward was called Joko ,a very pleasant chap. The ship was lovely, better than expected by reading some of the views on this page. The dining was superb ,we ate inthe orion a lot of the time where the waiter service was excellent, the food was always lovely and if you don't like what is on the menu you can order steak but you pay a supplement for this butit is worth it . We also ate in the lido a few times and the choice is great, quantity and quality is also great. The entertainment team were amazing up from early morning till late on into the wee small hours. The singer's in the waters edge are really good, they are called 2intense the thomson celebration are very lucky if they go there. I really enjoyed waking up each day in a different port, Argastoli in Kefalonia was my favourite port it was so calm ,very clean , I wouldn't mind a wee holiday there for a week .Disinformation went smooth until you go to corfu airport and its organised chaos ,you seem to wait in queues no matter where you go.All in all we had a brilliant cruise and do it all again in a heart beat, would recommend this cruise to anyone, nothing to complain about, and if you do then what can I say , your probably better spending your holidays at home.
