We are fairly recent cruisers and wanted a winter sun break and booked this cruise in January on line. The weather was superb and we were told by the crew the best they have had for several years. We flew from East Midlands to Tenerife and arrangements at departure, on arrival, coaching to Santa Cruz and boarding Marella Dream went like clockwork. The ship is old but is modern in appearance with good quality furnishings and the staff very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble from our room steward to the bar and restaurant staff. Corridors and lift space are a little narrow and not as spacious as more modern ships. The variety of lounges and drinking and dining options were first class as was the food and drinks. We like to be on our own for dinner and for six nights we were served by Jennifer and April who looked after us very well. The Marella Dream Show team and their shows in the Broadway Show Lounge were excellent. Some very good singers and dancers however the comedian Alan Wilkins material was older than us and we are in our 70's. The resident band were again very good with such a wide range of music on offer. Our only disappointment was the lack of space for sunbathing when we had such good weather. We were birthed in walking distance of six of the places we visited which is brilliant. There were lots of excursions and trips arranged which people we spoke to enjoyed. Leaving the cruise was also faultless, colour coded luggage and well organised. Our only disappointment was East Midlands Border Control on the return. It took about 30 minutes to process us which is not acceptable. A superb restful and enjoyable cruise. Thank you TUI. Read Less

We haven’t cruised before and wanted to celebrate our anniversary so we went for a low end weeks cruise as a taster with Marella Dream, with no exaggeration from the airport going to the airport coming home it was fantastic, boarding the ship on the first night we were really impressed with the friendly staff and condition of the ship, every day after just got better and better with super entertainment, friendly staff, top restaurant food, we met lots of new friends and thought the whole ship had a great atmosphere, we would have a great day on shore then always look forward to getting back on board. We especially liked the Orion restaurant, tides bar and waters edge, all very fancy and drinks are lovely, we didn’t need to upgrade to premium from all inclusive. Our cabin was larger and nicer than expected and very comfortable indeed. We assumed we were booking a inferior cruise maybe being a bit snobby but we couldn’t be more wrong it was exceptional value for money and a top experience. How this cruise would compare to p&o or Royal Caribbean I don’t know but cannot wait to find out as there’s no going back from this. Read Less

My first ever cruise, people telling me once I’d been on one I’d be hooked for life, I was there to be wowed and impressed. I did realise this was at the cheaper end of the cruise market, but as a long time TUI sensimar customer I still had high hopes and ignored comments about it being Butlins on sea. The boarding and transfer process all went well, and we found the overwhelming members of staff excellent. Yes the ship is dated, but our outside picture window cabin was surprisingly spacious, and cleaned twice a day. Most of the common areas were fine though the pools are not at all inviting. The meals were a mixed bag, breakfasts weren’t too bad, and the Orion Restaurant was of a reasonable quality. However the buffet meals in the Lido/Sirens restaurants were not so good. Everything looked appealing but most dishes were bland and tasteless, devoid of any seasoning or even salt n pepper. I recall what was described as Beef Vindaloo, yet it tasted like a casserole and could not even be described as a mild curry. Pasta dishes and many of the soups were also bereft of flavour. The entertainment was also a mixed bag, the 10 young people who form the Broadway team are highly professional as was the stand up comedian, however it’s a different story in the Medusa lounge where the Butlins reference emerges. Third rate Kareoke, childish quizzes, and worse of all encouraging people to do the Okey Cokey, having said that there were many stereotypical heavily tattooed lager swilling people who seemed to be enjoying it. Call me a snob, but this is far to Chavy for me Andy the reason I wouldn’t book again with Marella. Read Less

Iberian Delights, lived up to the usual smooth operation one would expect from Marella, embarkation was smooth and efficient, less than 10 mins from dockside to our cabin which was well equipped the bathroom had fluffy towels, hairdryer, shampoo and shower gel, the cabin was very clean and roomy, plenty of space for clothes and suitcases, tea, coffee making facilities, replenished daily by our cabin boy Aldrin who was always helpful and friendly. Dining, we ate in the dining room every evening, the menu was varied well presented and on the whole offered enough of a choice that even those who like to complain should have been catered for. Breakfast and lunch were also exceptional afternoon tea was a lovely treat, the words spoilt for choice spring to mind. Overnight sailings meant that there was plenty of time to experience all the on board entertainment on offer. As to shore excursions a really great itinerary from start to finish, and the bonus is only one sea day, the only hiccup was the tender operation for Portimao which due to sea conditions and the fact that everyone seemed to have the same idea as to their timetable for going ashore caused a few people to get a little agitated.(I still think a simple register with time slots bookable the day before would be a simple solution to this problem). We will certainly be sailing with Marella cruises again in the very near future. Read Less

Pick up from airport was hassle free, once we put our luggage on the bus we did not touch them again as they were delivered to our cabin. Our cabin number 1020 was fab lovely big cabin and lovely and clean. Our cabin steward Bagus was amazing he kept the place spotless. There a numerous bars on board all with very good entertainment the cruise director Taylor and his team did a fabulous job in ensuring that everyone has a good time. If I had to pick something it would be that the Broadway shows could be better. Bars staff are amazing and work extremely hard, staff that should out forme were Jodie and Roland in the Wave bar. Food was ok the sirens was by far the best place to eat, the worst was the Orion I expected better for a waiter served restaurant. We had steak one day and I asked for it medium rare only to be told it comes one way, having heard my parents rave about to food in this restaurant I was expecting better. The chocolate extravaganza was not like it used to be in fact it was very poor. If I had to make a recommendation it would be to open the Sirens in the evening and allow guest to access one of the 3 Alcarte restaurants free of charge during their stay. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we are now hooked!!! Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. The cabin 7020 was lovely and spacious and always kept spotless by the cabin steward, Edward. The ship itself was just the right size for us as we felt that if we went on a huge ship it would not be as cosy. The food was fantastic, choice of buffet, waited or a la carte restaurants. Never a time when we went hungry. The entertainment was great too. We spent most of the time in the Waters Edge bar, where Komang treated us like a King and Queen (superb service and nothing was ever too much trouble for him), but the other bars had plenty to offer too and shows in the Broadway show lounge were on each evening (the ones were saw were fab!) Plenty of organised excursions available but we chose to do our own thing and explore each destination on our own. My hubby used the gym a couple of times and found it really good. The staff all over the ship were excellent and always happy to help but as previously said, Edward the Cabin Steward and Komang the waiter, to us, went the extra mile. To sum it up, we didn't want to leave, we are now hooked and we are looking to go again next year! Read Less

Yes the ship is older but it is very clean and comfortable. The whole crew are very friendly and helpful. The food was varied and the drinks package was really good value for money. I am a vegetarian and the choice food wise was the best I have had. All food is labellled and covers various dietary requirements. The service we received from all the staff was second to none. Our cabin steward could not do enough for us. As we received a daily news sheet it was easy to select entertainment that suited us. Entertainment Director and his team worked hard and we enjoyed various shows, bands and quizzes. Everyone including Officers were very approachable. We went on organised trips and sometimes on our own. Either way information was always available at each port of call. A fabulous holiday and will be cruising again. Read Less

I booked this cruise as a last minute getaway for me and my wife. I have only been cruising once before on the crown princess so after looking at the reviews I was dreading my week away. How wrong could I have been. This was a fantastic cruise with fantastic staff. As a avid cook that enjoys cooking I loved the food and the way it was always perfectly cooked. I did hear of someone moaning because the scrambled egg wasn’t cooked. I’m sure Jeeves cooked theirs better at home, but Proper cooks cook scrambled eggs like you get them on the ship. The staff in the restaurants worked like pack mules and still had smiles on their faces. I received customer service that I never got in the two weeks on the crown princess, I really wished that the dream was my first cruise. Also read the reviews about the entertainment. Again very very wrong. Sound nation in the medusa lounge was fantastic. And it was hard to get a seat most nights, so if that’s worse than pub singers as reviews have said, I can only guess the pubs they go to are called trendy wine bars with violinists!!!! The entertainment staff was so attentive and made you feel like family not a number, cruise director Taylor has a great team in Fran,Susie,Katie and then there is Lewis, I think I broke ribs I laughed so much at his quips. Yes she has problems, she is a old ship and shows her age, but for what you paid for the ticket some people want staff walking behind them. I would say give her a try, make your own mind up, not just negative people finding little faults with her. Read Less

What a week! Where do i begin? My boyfriend and I were not looking for a cruise, in fact i sent him into down one dreary day in September 2017 to go book a week away for some winter sun for valentines day. What about a cruise the travel agent in TUI (back then Thomson's) said? What about a cruise? Always wanted one and seems cheaper than a land vacation! We settled on Marella Dream and the Canarian Flavours Itinerary. Everything was easy to book and in fact we booked the No. 1 lounge at Gatwick as we had an early flight (highly recommend as this also allows you priority access through security). The flight was delayed a little as two passengers missed the plan! Other then that the flight was uneventful, i am glad we upgraded to extra legroom seats! Embarkation was easy, the coach transfer from the airport to the ship was smooth and it was easy to find a Marella representative. Quick and efficient embarkation. The only issue I found was i registered my credit card for the room account but if my partner used his card that night and we woke up to a letter through the door telling us to register a card. A quick trip to reception soon sorted that. We decided to upgrade to the premium drinks package and booked some restaurant early on as it was valentines on this cruise and they were almost booked up at this time! Our cases were delivered within the hour so we unpacked and soon set off exploring. The Muster drill was just after 9pm, i was shattered after the travel and quite glad not to have to wear my life jacket for this. We had prebooked our cabin, 6140 and outside plus. Very spacious with out double bed under the picture window, a sofa with a small table, a large dressing table with storage and big mirror with lights around, lots of wardrobe space and a good sized en suit with a shower over the bath. We never saw out cabin attendant but they did a great job (sadly no towel animals :( ). Our first full day we docked in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. We booked a beach transfer excursion and enjoyed the 26 degree temperature and lazing about on the beach! The next day we docked at San Sebastian, no excursion booked here but the town was lovely to go and wander around. Plenty of placed for a nice coffee and beautiful scenery. Sadly we only had till 2pm to enjoy here but off we went on our way to the lovely Funchal in Maderia. This was the trip I was most looking forward to. We booked the cable car excursion with the botanical gardens. The cable cars are very easy to find and you could easily do this on your own. Just 10 short minutes walk from the ship (2 minutes by bus), easy to navigate and the views were stunning! We went all the way up into the town of Monte where we had an hour to visit the old church and enjoy a coffee in the square. It was like something out of a fairy tale and stunningly beautiful. We purchased our Madeira wine and cake for very reasonable price (15 Euros) for the folks back home. Now here was the fun part! You had a choice, back down the hill on the bus or using the traditional toboggans! We chose the later and what fun it was! Quick drink at the cafe at the bottom and back on the coach en route to the botanical gardens. The tour guide gave us a choice of a guided tour around these or an hour to explore ourselves. We decided to break away from the group and explore on our own. Very pretty and well worth the money. We got back on the bus and went to sample some Madeira wine and look at the local embroidery before heading back to the ship. We got back to the ship about 1:30pm, as we weren't due to depart until 8pm we decided to go explore the town. We paid 5 euros and took a classic Mercedes to the Market were we sampled local tapas and looked around the street. Found a great place for ice cream amongst the streets so make sure you go and explore! The next day was at Sea, i had been suffering with seasickness a little as the waters were quite choppy so i was worried for this day if I am honest. I had been getting tabled from reception (£2 for 4 seasickness tablets) but they didn't help me. Whilst docked in Funchal i visited a local pharmacy and got strong tablets. Thankfully these worked and I enjoyed the day at sea. A little lie in, late breakfast and a walk around the promenade deck. We enjoyed the whirlpools on deck 9 but as it was half term week there was a lot of children and some very misbehaving with no parents in sight! I thought the whirlpools are for over 14's only but this rule wasn't adhered to. Some of the kids were fine, but a lot decided a game of splash was in order and proceeded to climb over me and other passengers whilst splashing profusely...not the ships fault but i did comment about where the parents were. They held a Texas Hold 'em Up Poker tournament in the casino at 3pm, £25 buy in with 70% of the pot as the winnings. I signed up for this and came 5th so enjoyed myself. The casinos are good fun but remember to buy in pounds as the exchange rate is horrendous! 50 euros was about £38 so you are losing before you even play! But hey, that is gambling for you! The next day we docked at Arrecife in Lanzarote. Here we booked the dune buggy excursion and it was great fun! Saw some amazing sights but you don't half get dirty! It didn't help whilst everyone else drove around the pools of muddy water my boyfriend drove through them and soaked us. Great fun and good value for money. I would definitely book an excursion here as there isn't much to do in the port. The same can be said for the last port we visited on this trip, Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura. We didn't book and excursion and the town was a bit of a disappointment. A few cheap souvenir shops but not much else. We would recommend booking an excursion or preplanning this port if you do this trip. We were very sad to leave the next day but disembarkation was very smooth and the staff are always happy to help. About the ship, yes she is dated, but she is also 31 years old and has character! I loved her as i do not really fancy cruising on a floating shopping mall. We ate in all the restaurants. I preferred the waiter service in Orion and my partner liked the Lido buffet. We both enjoyed the late night curry at 11:30pm which was lovely after a few cocktails in the evening. We also tried all three premium restaurants, Kora La, Hot Stones and Minstrals. All were lovely but Minstrals was amazing. We were lucky to enjoy this restaurant on valentines night with a wonderful seat next to a big window watching the sunset. All the women were given a single rose by the waiter and the food is out of this world. Marella do a package deal for all three restaurants for £49 per person, a great deal and well worth it. We spent most of our evenings in Waters Edge or at the back on deck 10 above the swimming pool. The entertainment in Waters Edge was good. Didn't see any shows as not really our thing but the services was great and the staff are only too happy to help. The shops are good, sampled the spa but found it too pricey in my honest opinion (and made my seasickness worse!) Our safe malfunctioned half way through the cruise and reception sent someone down within 5 minutes of us reporting. Soon fixed with no issue. Yes you can use the safe without paying, but, you have to sign a form when you pay and without this signature you insurance is invalid. It would have been incredibly embarrassing had we not paid but used the safe and our passport ended up locked inside! We loved this cruise, the ship and the fellow staff and passengers so much we are hooked and one whole week after arriving home, we booked a 2 week cruise on the same ship for March 2019. Fantastic crew and service. We were worried as lots of reports of hygiene issues and the dreaded Norovirus before we embarked, however, there is hand sanitiser everywhere and the only time I felt it unhygienic was fellow passengers not washing their hands after going to the loo! So to conclude, lovely ship, she is an old lady but has real character and charm about her which we adored. Wonderful attentive staff and beautiful ports of call. 100% recommend for those who like the personal feel of a smaller ship. We loved her so much so we are going back and cannot wait. However, if you do not want the whirlpools to be hogged choose to go during term time. Read Less

We sailed on the Marella Dream in January 2017 and absolutely loved it. We loved the restaurants, the food was of a high standard everywhere we chose to eat on board. We were also all inclusive which meant we didn't have to pay for any drinks and we liked the location of our cabin which was on deck 7 right at the very back of the ship. 7203. We enjoyed our cruise so much on board the Dream that we booked to sail on her again January 18. She is currently cruising around the Canaries so we were happy at not having to fly so far this time. We got married on the 30th December so this cruise was meant to be extra special as it was our Honeymoon. Unlike previous cruises we have been on, including last years, for some reason you have to collect your own luggage at the airport terminal. Usually once you have checked your baggage in at the U.K. airport you do not see it again until you are on board the ship. This is part of the service you normally expect when going on a cruise. Not a big deal but it did make us wonder why? Within hours of embarking we realised that something was wrong. We went to have something to eat in the Lido buffet restaurant which is normally self service . I picked my plate up ready and was scolded! The girl passed me a plate wearing gloves. I noticed all the serving spoons, tongs etc were facing the wrong way and quickly realised we were not allowed to serve ourselves. It soon became clear why. There was Norovirus on board the ship and had been for several weeks. The ship was demonstrating heightened hygiene practice. The captain was constantly making tannoy announcements telling us to sanitize sanitize sanitize which of course we did, not wanting to catch anything. All swimming pools saunas and jacuzzis were also out of action. There was netting covering them up. Families with children must have devastated because of this ! It was bad enough for the adults not to be able to have a swim ! This is all a big part of any holiday ! An hour later I saw a poor woman projectile vomit and then collapse in the Medusa lounge. We had not even set sail ! An army of staff were radioed to come to the scene!!. There was about 8 men in boiler suits wearing masks and gloves carrying back packs with either hoovers or some sort of sanitizer spray in them and the whole area was cordoned of by a wall of chairs. This went on for about an hour as the lady was helped by her husband and crew. Later on I ordered a vodka lime soda at the bar and asked for a slice of lime or lemon to be told no fruit was allowed in drinks because the ship was on strict sanitation. Oh well. no great shakes. But we were supposed to be on a cruise where you enjoy the best of everything. The captain made an announcement that bad weather conditions were going to make it a rough sailing that night and he had decided to omit tomorrow's port of call, La Palma and we would have an extra sea day instead! We and fellow passengers were not too happy about this but again oh well, he must have his reasons? After a long days travelling we went to bed about half 11 still feeling great to be on board the Dream and excited about our 2 week cruise. Just nodding off around midnight and it started. Loud booming music, like it was actually in our cabin. We both use ear plugs anyway, but they did not block out this music !! It turns out that we were directly below the late night bar where they party until the small hours of the morning! To add insult to injury my husband had paid £90 for an upgrade to this cabin which he had to arrange verbally over the phone!! He had asked for the same cabin as last year but was told that was already sold but would he like one 3 doors up. He said that's great it was nice and quiet and near the door to the rear of the ship again. At no point did they warn him that this cabin was underneath the late night bar ! They just took the payment! The next day I asked at reception to be moved as I could not stand that noise for a fortnight and they told me there was nowhere to move to only further along on the same deck underneath the Medusa lounge which was also having a late night party till the early hours. We said that would be pointless !! She said they would have a word with the entertainments team and tell them to keep the music down to a more acceptable level. It was bearable for a few nights, we stayed out longer and drank more to help us sleep but a few nights later it happened again and continued for the rest of the fortnight. BEWARE BOOKING A CABIN ON DECK 7 towards the rear of the ship you will get no sleep !! As if that wasn't bad enough with the noise, there was maintenance work going on every where on the ship ! We would find a quiet place to sunbathe and have a read and you could guarantee that a man in overalls would start with drilling, banging, angle grinding, sanding, varnishing.. you name it they were doing it ! It was actually unbelievable!! This holiday was turning in to the holiday from hell ! Still determined to enjoy ourselves we remained upbeat and drank even more to block our misery out !! When the ship actually docked and we could get off for a bit our disappointment just got worse. In many ports all you could see was shipping containers no nice views to enjoy, except one day in Madeira but the following week it moored in a different berth. Agina in a industrial part full of giant containers. We had to walk literally miles just to get into a tourist area. This happened time and time again. Once we had to buy tickets costing £6 to get on the TUI shuttle bus to get us out of the port and into a nice area !! It really really was getting more disappointing as the cruise went on ! The food in the Orion restaurant had gone down the pan since last year. It was just about warm enough most of the time but sometimes we just asked them to microwave it, I cant stand wasting food. They laughed and said you can have it hot Madam but frazzled !! We watched why the food was not hot. Your entire meal came at the same time. Whilst we were eating our starters the main course and dessert were left on the side. This is `100 % fact, in fact all of what I am saying is. By week two I was in tears and wanted to go home. The noise, the late night bar music, the ports of call which we knew were the same as the first week, the same old same old entertainment night after night. We thought about getting off in Lanzarote and booking in a nice hotel but worked out how much more money on top of the cruise that would have cost so decided to stick it out. I think the people on reception felt sorry for me as I was regularly in tears . In the end they refunded us our £90 upgrade fee and gave us a £50 apology. It did cheer us up a bit but in no way did we consider it compensation. We had paid nearly £3000 for this cruise and it was our Honeymoon !! When we eventually got home thank goodness, I filled in a complaints form and spoke to several TUI customer service members. They all really sympathised with me but an email came back yesterday telling us that they were sorry that our cruise did not live up to our expectations but we had been given £50 compensation on board and they hoped we would be cruising with TUI again soon! It is not that our expectations were too high, after all we had been on this ship before, it was that TUI failed to deliver the wonderful cruise that they promise you in their advertising campaigns ! That ship should never have set sail knowing there was a massive health hazard on board. So many peoples holidays were ruined by getting ill and being confined to their cabin for days. We heard many people complaining. One day they closed ALL RESTAURANTS for deep cleaning ! The only place you could get food was the Lido grill which we would never ever choose to eat from. People were just getting on and having to stand in a long line for absolutely 3rd rate food which kept on running out! This was our last day and boy were we glad that we were going home. The new passengers were going mad !! I felt sorry for them ! Trust me, my husband and I have got a fantastic sense of humour and we did manage to have a laugh in spite of feeling so miserable and disappointed on our honeymoon. I am now laughing thinking that TUI really think we are going to book another cruise with them! Even the Captain got off half way through !! Maybe he went down with the virus or just bailed with embarrassment !!! Read Less

I chose this cruise because it covered NewYears eve and my wifes 70th birthday. The best part of the cruise was the firework display provided buy Funchal, thank goodness TUI didn't have anything to do with this , other than docking in Fuchal. The ship was in the midst of a virus issue and underwent a chlorine deep clean of all the ships plumbing in Tenerife the day before we left for home. This entailed getting nearly all the passengers off the ship and onto a complimentory tirp (10 coaches I counted). New passengers where boarding in Tenerife when the trip got back to the ship. More chaos ensued as both sets of passengers had to board through the same gangway. The next day the Captain announced to the new passengers not to believe what had been posted on social media in the UK about the virus onboard, but said it had been mostlikely been brought onboard by previous passengers on a previous. cruise. What a cheek !! Why did it take nearly two weeks to deep claen the ship!!!! Food was abismal, luke warm at best. Bacon at breakfast could have been used to tile a roof it was that hard and overcooked. I didn't fancy complaining about the food as you never now how upset the cooks can get!! Waiters where cleaning tables in the self service restaurants with spontex cloths and on sign of them using antibacterial even though the passengers were religiosly using and being prompted to use the hand sanitisers. The cabin flooded on Wdnesday night along with many more at various times throughout our week (good, sorry bad news travels fast in lifts). Hense the eventual deep clean. This was our first cruise with TUI / Marella and TBF i can only review what we experienced over the Christmas on board and can not compare with other cruises. Travel to ship was painless and check in easy debit card details left safe code collected we had already got out cabin number at our departure airport so far so good. Took awhile to get luggage but there were a lot of people arriving so there was some leeway from us on that. Cabin was exceptional and i would recommend upgrading to a suit to anyone i will review this in the cabin review. Food was ok , ate in the Orion (deck 11) for breakfast and lunch , and the waiter service on deck 4 three times including the Christmas day gala dinner, and using the 3 speciality restaurants on the other nights where the food was very good fine dining at its best. The hot stone was fun ,cooking your own meat to your liking very nice indeed. It was fun watching the guests coming into the dining room looking around for the tables of two and being disappointed they had been taken lol standing on tip toes looking as far into the restaurant they can... Entertainment was not what i had expected on a cruise i would have liked to see well known entertainers strutting their stuff not young enthusiastic kids screaming into the microphone. Sorry guys you tried your best with the resources you had to hand but you were just too loud for me and others who left during the performances. Bar, well like most but probably everyone were gently pushed into buying the premium drink package so you got premium drinks , better coffee etc. Considering i had paid top whack for my holiday with a £1470 upgrade for our cabin i would have expected this to be included errrr no... tried to buy someone a premium drink on my premium account was told no unless they had a premium account also oh dear not looking good really. But overall service good , fast and pleasant. Internet, again paying for cabin upgrade i would have liked free internet but had to pay £8 for 1 hour or until my MB allowance had been used so what was it an hour or a MB allowance i think the latter. Ship was ok, a little tired though out with ongoing repairs and paining while in port. Friendly crew and staff always wanting to help. Noticeable lack of staff but were told by others who had been on this ship in recent past that this was correct since TUI / Marella had taken over Thompson. Photographers clicking away like they had just been given a camera, leaving the ship, boarding the ship, walking around the ship always there clicking away, we nicknamed them the paparazzi, but we bought the ones we were going to buy anyway gala dinner and first time we boarded ship for the memory boxes. Conclusion wrong cruise for me for first time but enjoyed it to a point as we can just relax anywhere, looking at Asia cruise next year for a more cultural style of holiday as we both like that part of the world. We chose this cruise because we love Tenerife and the other canary islands. The Marella Dream was amazing and the staff were all so friendly, especially in the restaurants and the bars. In the restaurant we were so looked after by Joseph, the head waiter and his partner Yumi. They were both so friendly and took time to have a laugh although they were very busy. The wine waiter Ivana was lovely and made our holiday a pleasure due to being so friendly and getting us a seat every night. I have been on other Tui cruises and the staff were good but on the Marella Dream it was amazing. The bar staff were great and the waiters, especially Elmer were always there to get you a drink. Myself and my husband had the best holiday even although the weather was not great. The staff on the Marella Dream made sure people were having a great holiday and we will definitely be back on a Tui cruise in thinner future. The food was really good and was to the quality of a good 5 star restaurant. The menu was good with lots of choices. Read Less

Decided to book this cruise in May so that we could get some Winter Sun. We had been on virtually the same cruise the year before on the Thomson Spirit and enjoyed it so much that we had no qualms about booking with Thomson (now TUI/Marella) again. Supplemented the cruise with four days at the end in the TUI Sensimar in Los Gigantes, Tenerife. Overall price for the package appeared to be excellent value. As with the previous Thomson cruise, flight, transfers, embarkation and disembarkation were exceptionally smooth. Although this was the largest boat we have been on, its size was eminently manageable and facilities, apart from selfish sunbed reserving with towels, appropriate for the number of passengers. Our inside cabin was spacious, comfortable and, importantly, very quiet. The only exceptionally minor criticism was a slight lack of storage space. Minibar fridge was very useful for keeping our water cool. Although there didn't appear to be ironing facilities on board, steam from the shower removed most of our creases. Food in the waiter-service restaurant was of a good standard, but perhaps not quite as good as on Spirit last year or on the C&M Magellan earlier this year, particularly in its presentation. Food in the buffet was always very good; however, I do find the amounts that some eat in such restaurants somewhat obscene. We didn't use any of the paid for restaurants since the menus didn't really offer anything different/better. On my Birthday we opted for the supplement applicable Rib-eye steak, which was excellent but, in line with an apparent obsession with not sending out under-cooked meat, was really medium-rare rather than the rare we had asked for. As on other cruises, the free coffee was undrinkable: a ploy perhaps to make you buy the premium coffee? We had opted for the free All Inclusive drinks package. House wine, especially the red, was excellent, as was the draught lager. Cocktails available on the AI package were fairly limited and not as good as on last year's Spirit voyage. We didn't see any of the drunken behaviour experienced by those commenting on other Dream cruises, although i have always found it slightly worrying to see people ordering a G&T at 10-30 in the morning. Staff throughout the boat were attentive and courteous, providing an exemplary level of service. However, the open-seating in the restaurant meant that we didn't really develop any relationships with the waiting staff, which was a pity. Entertainment in the Broadway Show Lounge was generally good. The dancing and staging were of a very high standard; however, some of the singing was no better than a very good amateur level and there did appear to be a problem with sound levels. The only other entertainment we sampled was the pianist in Explorer Lounge, who was excellent. We didn't take part in any of the other activities, mainly because it was difficult to find a seat near the main pool. For us Entertainment and Activities are very low priority. The choice of ports was excellent, particularly being able to go to a smaller island such as La Gomera. We went on the La Gomera cycle tour, which we thoroughly enjoyed; however, the route was relatively challenging and we're not sure whether some of the others were expecting such a challenge. We didn't go on any other excursions: in this Internet Age it is very easy to pre-book shore-based activities from home; for instance on Gran Canaria we hired a car for a day at less than the cost of the cheapest transfer to Maspalomas for one person. Overall a superb cruise. we would not hesitate on going on the Dream again and even a third trip to the Canaries would leave us with plenty to do. Read Less
