Worst Holiday Ever on this ship total let down would have preferred to stay at home. First Cruise and the last such a boring ship more like a booze cruise than a holiday booked for Christmas two week Canaries Cruse sheer hell. Never seen so many people happy it was over. Never seen so many container ports waking up to banging and crashing most ports it called into not a sandy beach in sight just ferries and cargo ships all around. No proper entertainment shows 45 mins of rubbish with show cast climbing ladders etc etc same cast every night just pure boring as for the late night comedian once a week people walked out he was so bad. Daytime no entertainment as such apart from silly kids so called entertainers on a 3 till 3.15 not a kid in sight in main bar it was so bad some kind of I.Spy NONSENSE. Nobody could understand it. As for nightly entertainment same group every night in Squid and Anchor for a whole 45 mins. No Atmosphere same old songs night after night. Bring your knitting was one form of entertainment during the day not a decent quiz or family show in site. Also they had Teeth Whitening and Health Check seminars going on if your into that. God help us if that's what Tui think people want. Paid for the £200 drinks upgrade what a wast of money as Premium Spirits few and far between more money wasted.Booked a couple of trips shocking seen 2 camels a couple of snakes and lucky men trying to sell you volcanic rock utter rubbish then taken to a beach with cafes and lucky men non stop. O and a mosque visit to stand outside highlight of Morocco. Went on an evening trip in Portugal to see the lights stopped at a fishing village then dragged through the town through a Christmas market AT LIGHTNING SPEED THINK TOUR GUIDE WAS ON SOME KIND OF RACE TOTALLY SHOCKING. My wife had to go to ships medical centre as half the ship had coughing and breathing difficulties 4th day with a chest infection got home and got the bill for £3.500 for 2 hours treatment now fighting this outrages bill. What a rip off. Not even offered a cough bottle and travel insurance refusing to pay this another fight on our hands. Carpets in bar areas filthy i actually thought it was water on floor till i felt carpet just huge stains as people caring drinks all round the ship. As i say more a booze cruise. Main restaurant Market Place more a cafeteria pool snack shack filthy dirty tables etc etc. Sit down restaurants were ok but Menu very bland. Ship totally short of staff bar staff did there best happy a smiley and did there best only good point. Cabin Stewards also very good just to much work 33 cabins to service every day just ridicules. White Suites walking about like they were gods gift did very little as far as we could see. Ship more in line with a 3 star hotel than a relaxing cruise Total cost with medical bill £7.500 for 2 bored 65yr olds totally shocking experience last time i book with Thompson. Would be better off at Butlins by the sea. After you arrive and hand over your credit card they don't want to know you. My advice book with a decent cruise company and not this shower of rouges. The cruise was taken with friends one of whom was to celebrate their 60th birthday during the 7 day cruise. No problems at airport or transfer but disappointed that on this cruise we had to deal with our own luggage. Slight mix up on room allocation due to being given wrong room number belonging to another couple with very similar names. Rectified before boarding boat and luggage arrived at right room. Our outside cabin on level 6 was plenty big enough for two, plenty of storage and kept clean by very attentive crew member. Food: Self service Sirens and Lido were okay, but sometimes over busy. Didn't seem as much choice as previous cruises. Orion waiter service was generally better, although two incidents of less professional service by one waiter who rushed us on Captains night but allowed others different service and then on final night a wine waiter who was busy doing other tasks rather than keeping our glasses full. Food in Mistrals pretty decent apart from Captains night when it was pretty dire. Also ate one night in Mistrals for the birthday celebration meal. Excellent service and good value. We were all inclusive and upgraded our drinks package. We thought this offered us wider variety and good value for money. Bar staff were excellent and only on a couple of times did we experience any delays in being served. All the music entertainment was pretty good. Not all to my individual taste but pretty good all the same. The shows in the Broadway Lounge were really good, including the guest comedian. The ship is old, but clean and well looked after. Sun beds can be difficult to find on sea days. Overall we would go on the Dream again but on a different route. Madeira was superb but the Canaries hold nothing new for use. Read Less

We are fairly recent cruisers and wanted a winter sun break and booked this cruise in January on line. The weather was superb and we were told by the crew the best they have had for several years. We flew from East Midlands to Tenerife and arrangements at departure, on arrival, coaching to Santa Cruz and boarding Marella Dream went like clockwork. The ship is old but is modern in appearance with good quality furnishings and the staff very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble from our room steward to the bar and restaurant staff. Corridors and lift space are a little narrow and not as spacious as more modern ships. The variety of lounges and drinking and dining options were first class as was the food and drinks. We like to be on our own for dinner and for six nights we were served by Jennifer and April who looked after us very well. The Marella Dream Show team and their shows in the Broadway Show Lounge were excellent. Some very good singers and dancers however the comedian Alan Wilkins material was older than us and we are in our 70's. The resident band were again very good with such a wide range of music on offer. Our only disappointment was the lack of space for sunbathing when we had such good weather. We were birthed in walking distance of six of the places we visited which is brilliant. There were lots of excursions and trips arranged which people we spoke to enjoyed. Leaving the cruise was also faultless, colour coded luggage and well organised. Our only disappointment was East Midlands Border Control on the return. It took about 30 minutes to process us which is not acceptable. A superb restful and enjoyable cruise. Thank you TUI. Read Less

We have only been on three previous cruises, all on small ships with quite personal service so this one at 1,500 passengers was big for us ! Our ports of call in the Canaries and Madeira were all fascinating, we thought that the excursions were overpriced and after finding that the handouts from the ship were not very helpful or accurate we headed for the tourist information offices at the places we visited. There was good information about the ports on-line but we used on-shore wi-fi and roaming Vodafone after a message that we would be charged £2.88 per minute for all calls, texts, and data on "Vodafone Marine" ! Our cabin, 1004, was quite good with a settee and table as well as TV and tea and coffee facilities and a good size window, a bit obscured by lifeboat access equipment. We had a problem with the safe which two visits from crew could not sort out, Dennis, an officer from reception was the second to try, we were pleased that the safe locked itself and refused to open until he put his override code in twice. He confirmed to us that it was faulty. I made a third visit to reception to complain and they refunded my money but were unable to provide a replacement safe for us or alternative safe storage for our valuables, apparently there is no safe at reception ! Our only option was to find a hiding place in the cabin. Please note there is no forseeable solution to this problem as replacement safes are apparently not available ! On our fifth day I was up early with diarrhoea and vomiting, I called reception as required and was visited by a doctor and nurse. They confirmed from my symptoms that it was not viral and therefore probably something that I had eaten so I could either stay in the cabin on immodium for 24 hours or visit the ships hospital for treatment which would see me well again in a couple of hours, I opted for the latter and had extensive blood tests and intravenous drugs, the treatment worked and I called back in the evening to check that all my obs. were normal. Excellent service but a tad dear at £1,400 plus ! Interesting to note that the previous day had been a "sea day" so it was most probably something that I had eaten on the ship. We unfortunately missed Lanzarote on my sick day. On the positive side, the crew were polite and helpful to a man ( or person I suppose I should say). The highlight of the cruise was the entertainment team, they worked non stop and were really professional and talented. The food was all pretty good ranging from canteen type buffets in various locations, made to order pancakes, omelettes and pizzas, a proper sit down restaurant with good service and "pay extra" speciality restaurants. We were on a full board but not " all inclusive " basis so we paid for the "wine package" which at about £14 per bottle compared to UK restaurant prices. Drinks at the bar were similar to pub prices. We enjoyed a lot of the cruise but there were things that let it down, there was no hot water on one evening and for the hour before the captains reception the whole ship was without any running water, the Captain did apologise and excused the smelly guests ! I registered all my complaints on-board and filled in the questionnaire on our return but there has been no offer of apology or compensation, in fact no response at all ! Read Less

We are quite experienced cruisers now, but never with Marella and if im honest I was a bit dubious given some of the reviews, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Yes the boat and decor is getting a bit tired in places, but we have really struggled to find too many negatives, the only ones really were having to pay for the use of the safe in the cabin (£15 for one week), and the shower in our cabin which was a little temperamental, going from hot to cold and back to hot and then cold again all on its own!! The main evening entertainment shows were easily some of the best we have seen, all the cast of singers and dancers were amazing with special comments for Luke, Danielle and Charlotte. The evening meals in the Orion were all of a great standard, very “British” but generally excellent in quality, as was the service given by the staff, look out for Carl and his team around table 100, they were all lovely! The crew on board were actually all by far the friendliest and happiest we have ever met, always saying hello whenever you passed them, and nothing seemed too much trouble for anyone. Our cabin was an inside this time, we would normally have an outside or balcony but for this week we were happy enough to take inside, it was compact but everything was clean and comfortable, TV was working and we got Sky sports news, an ITV channel and a few others, no problems at all really, except the safe and the shower as already mentioned. Nightly turn down service and chocolates on the pillow and several towel animals from our steward who was lovely, thank you Antoinette. We will definitely be looking into further Marella cruises from now on, maybe on a slightly newer and bigger ship though. Read Less

Went with my mum and sister; chosen by my mum as she had not been to the Canary Islands before. Places included Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Madeira, Morocco and Lanzarote. The most positive part were the staff onboard who were always keen to help. Choice of and quality of meals was excellent. The entertainment team were excellent every night too. Due to adverse weather conditions, 2 of the nights were very rocky, and many felt sea sick; obviously not the fault of TUI. Poor weather continued for most days. The odd sunny day, it would have been nice to enjoy the sun beds on the top deck, but they were all taken, and the ones which were not had been "reserved" by selfish passengers draping towels over them. TUI need to address this. Another disappointment was that 2 of our excursions were cancelled; one due to not enough people booking ( hard to beleive that out of well over 1000 passengers, this could happen). Another was cancelled as filming for a movie was taking place in the area we were going to in Tenerife. The TV in our cabin did not work all week, as other passengers have mentioned. I guess we may well have been unlucky, and perhaps a cruise is not my kind of holiday. It seemed to be most popular with older passengers who prefer to stay onboard and enjoy making the most all the inclusive food and alcohol. When asked one afternoon by an elderly, overweight male passenger why I wasn't drinking, I was more than tempted to say "Because I don't want to look like you". I enjoyed using the gym several times. I would have preferred the choice of more activities such as yoga and aerobics. There was a pilates session on some mornings, but a bit too early and only if enough people turned up. Read Less

My friend and I have just returned from the Marella Dream 'Colourful Coasts' cruise. We enjoyed every minute of our trip. For an older ship she is still in great condition inside, our cabin was spotless and well maintained on a daily basis. We ate in the Orion restaurant every night and we can't fault the food or staff. A good choice of menu and excellent wine waiters! We enjoyed every night in the Broadway theatre, the Dream cast do a fab job and they work hard to provide a good night of entertainment. We also enjoyed listening to the accoustic duo in Tides lounge. All the staff in and around the ship were very nice and accommodating. . We did an excursion in every port we visited. The shore excursions we booked through the ship all went according to plan. We had a fabulous 7 night cruise aboard this ship and we are looking to book another Marella cruise for next spring!! Pick up from airport was hassle free, once we put our luggage on the bus we did not touch them again as they were delivered to our cabin. Our cabin number 1020 was fab lovely big cabin and lovely and clean. Our cabin steward Bagus was amazing he kept the place spotless. There a numerous bars on board all with very good entertainment the cruise director Taylor and his team did a fabulous job in ensuring that everyone has a good time. If I had to pick something it would be that the Broadway shows could be better. Bars staff are amazing and work extremely hard, staff that should out forme were Jodie and Roland in the Wave bar. Food was ok the sirens was by far the best place to eat, the worst was the Orion I expected better for a waiter served restaurant. We had steak one day and I asked for it medium rare only to be told it comes one way, having heard my parents rave about to food in this restaurant I was expecting better. The chocolate extravaganza was not like it used to be in fact it was very poor. If I had to make a recommendation it would be to open the Sirens in the evening and allow guest to access one of the 3 Alcarte restaurants free of charge during their stay. Read Less

I booked this cruise as a last minute getaway for me and my wife. I have only been cruising once before on the crown princess so after looking at the reviews I was dreading my week away. How wrong could I have been. This was a fantastic cruise with fantastic staff. As a avid cook that enjoys cooking I loved the food and the way it was always perfectly cooked. I did hear of someone moaning because the scrambled egg wasn’t cooked. I’m sure Jeeves cooked theirs better at home, but Proper cooks cook scrambled eggs like you get them on the ship. The staff in the restaurants worked like pack mules and still had smiles on their faces. I received customer service that I never got in the two weeks on the crown princess, I really wished that the dream was my first cruise. Also read the reviews about the entertainment. Again very very wrong. Sound nation in the medusa lounge was fantastic. And it was hard to get a seat most nights, so if that’s worse than pub singers as reviews have said, I can only guess the pubs they go to are called trendy wine bars with violinists!!!! The entertainment staff was so attentive and made you feel like family not a number, cruise director Taylor has a great team in Fran,Susie,Katie and then there is Lewis, I think I broke ribs I laughed so much at his quips. Yes she has problems, she is a old ship and shows her age, but for what you paid for the ticket some people want staff walking behind them. I would say give her a try, make your own mind up, not just negative people finding little faults with her. Read Less

Booked this cruise at short notice because we needed cheering up after Christmas. So booked on impulse and paid before reviewing. Big mistake !!!! Our 4th cruise and the first with Tui. The first 3 were with another company and absolutely eye opening. They were brilliant. Not this one though, what a disapointment. The room was lovely in size as we chose a larger room outside, for an extra £45. A large window and space to move around each other was great. We were in the middle of the ship on deck 7. The furnishings are dated and tired but seemed to be clean. The first problem was when we went for a meal in Sirens, selve service, I was struggling with 2 cups of tea and a small plate with a snack on and put them on a tray. Wow, was I told off !! "Sorry but you cant have a tray". When I asked why I was told by the *white suit* they are only for the waiters to collect stuff with, not for passenger use. !!! This I found very odd. When I asked a waiter / cleaner upper he said they dont have enough trays !! A couple of days later the wife was suffering with a sore throat and feeling sick. After struggling a lot trying to bring food and drinks to the table by several trips to fetch food and drink I got fed up and asked at reception. I was told it was not safe to use a tray and not efficient, so they had withdrawn the use of trays. !!?? My wife got worse over the week and we put it down to a mild dose of flu due to the weather being windy and wet. We missed a port stop due to weather and not Tui's fault at all. The entertainment was a very poor standard and the 4 piece group would not have survived the first spot in my local pub and would have been paid off !!! The 2 girl due were very good, the pianist was exellent and the 3 boys in the casino end were so-so. ( Would have been just tolerated in a pub) . A shame but true. Senior staff were not as helpfull as the minions trying to be helpfull. A shortage of sun loungers by the pool and too many reserved. A trio of middle aged ladiest returned from line dancing, 12.30, that started at 11.00 am and were very miffed when there prime located sun beds were taken up !!! Some people ............. . Wife still poorly after arriving home. ( Ship doctor cost £90 and gave antbiotics ) I am generaly not one for being fussy but this ship was a joke !!!> Read Less

We have been on a few Thomson cruises before (now Tui Marella) We booked The Dream for a cheeky little get away. The ship is tired and not the most luxurious or glamorous but does what it says on the tin. The ship was at higher sanitation so the buffet service was not help yourself but served by staff wearing gloves. The ship was dull as they had stuff on the rails and windows to clean them. This made the tired ship more dowdy, and you had to sanitize hands at every corner. I dont mind this as would rather that then get sick. The pools were open but the whirlpool and sauna were shut which was disappointing We ate mainly in the main restaurant Orion as we like waiter service and it was lovely. The cabin was as advertised compact but nice enough, there is so much to do and see the cabin is for sleeping and showering and attended to every day by our cabin steward Aiko who was lovely, The food is amazing and the drink package is great, we were offered to upgrade for another £100 but it is not worth it the AI package is more than sufficient especially when you ask to see the list of things included...........not widely advertised so worth asking The entertainment was second to none and the cruise director Taylor was great. All the staff are great so pleasant and make you feel very welcome and at ease, except the shop assistants they were somewhat lacking and could certainly take tips from the others. Read Less

Shower was a nightmare to use. Lifts were slow and not many of them. Risk of infection very high with virus, trying to play it down. Deep cleaning done as we left ship. Swimming pools closed due to sanitation, should have been told. Food very poor, dried out, and no choice. Food was not always hot. Drinks included package was not what you think either. Extras to pay and no menus of drinks around. Not a lot of trips organised. Ports not bad. Paying for a safe? Never done before on cruise ship. Also had to have been the most temperamental safe to use. Very tired looking ship even though has been overhauled. Would not recommend cruise line. We were glad to leave. Read Less

This is the worst cruise we have ever had in all our days of cruising. The first 2 nights our room thermostat was broken and it was freezing, when it was fixed it went the other way and was really hot, finally a new one was put in. The 4th night the toilet overflowed and raw sewage was all over the floor. Our cabin was on deck 7 and at the rear of the ship, wow the ship just vibrated and everything in the room just vibrated all night, the only time it stopped was when we were in port. We were right under a nightclub, and fair enough the band stopped at midnight, then it was the turn of the disco till 3-4 in the morning, if you go stay away from that area. When the ship was in port most days the crew would do there duties, like painting and so forth, but a needle gun chipping the old paint off and a angle grinder making all that noise, it was like being at work. The worst bit for me was on the morning we had to leave the ship, I must have eaten some thing odd, we left the ship at 8-30 and our flight back was at 12-40, we took off and I couldn't wait to go to the toilet, I spent most of the journey home in the toilet being sick and diarrhoea, spent 4 days in bed and the doctor said it was food poisoning. This was all told to TUI in a e-mail and the reply back was what I expected, in so many words of quoting " the terms and conditions" nothing can be done, SO SORRY, and you can get sick on holiday, so they say. My advice stay away from TUI . cheep yes but can be nasty James Read Less

It was advertised as a Xmas cruise..Spanish don't do Xmas As I found out. The cabin was basic but comfortable.interestingly has 2 bunk beds on the walls.. Just like a car ferry..which basically this was minus cars. The service was ok and the excursions were overall good value and interesting. The entertainment was for a Spanish audience and not of high quality. The bars were few and crowded until 2145 when second sitting started. I met a number of fellow cruisers who would not travel again on this ship. It bears no resemblance to a modern cruise ship. The food was basic and small portions with almost no vegetables or salads and no deviation from starter, main, desert. There was no coffee,no cheese plate and we were ushered out quickly at 9 to allow 2nd sitting at 2145. Read Less

We were disappointed with the marella dream ship it was our 3rd time going on the ship we found standards had dropped the ship is tired. The food was mediocre sometimes cold and the menu limited. The show team were good but the other singers I think have been drawn from the ships crew and to say the least have limited talent. In the evening we struggled to find seating in all the venues. We found it frustrating trying to get served for drinks the waiters do not seem to cordinate the way they covered the venues , sometimes we felt invisible as they just walked aimlessly around . The all inclusive drinks package is not all inclusive there are supplements for many drinks . This caused confusion to say the least and is quite misleading If you want a far better ship try the discovery 2 . We did last June and can recommend the ship 100%. Read Less

Holiday Review of Thompson (TUI) Marella Discovery 2 Canary islands for one week from 20th October 2017 taken to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary We do not normally write reviews and would not have done so now had our complaint been dealt with reasonably by TUI the final straw came yesterday when their Senior customer services advisor directors team ANGELA told us that the complaint was closed and the £60 compensation was all we were going to get, to summarise as the issues were not TUI,s problems. See what you think was £60 compensation ok for the following holiday experience? By the way we cancelled the next cruise today and will NEVER cruise with TUI ships again. We arrived on the boat at approx 2 PM and the room was not ready, when the check out time is 8AM. We got back to the room and found it made up wirth two single beds when we had requested on booking the holiday a double bed, we went to reception and they said it would be dealt with by the cabin crew later. We returned to the room after an evening meal and the bed was still two singles we went again to reception to try to resolve the situation, the beds were finally made in to a double at approx 10 PM, when we had been travelling all day were exhausted and wanted nothing more than to sleep. On the following night we were woken in the early hours of the morning by a loud intermittent banging under our starboard side level two out side cabin, the noise continued and at 2.45 AM we complained over the phone to reception, one of the receptionists came down and spoke to us and agreed that the level of the noise was unacceptable and that she would try to find out what was causing it and what could be done about it. We were given various excuses ranging from work going on to something loose in the hold and finally bad weather, at 3.30AM we had had enough and contacted reception again, this time were met in our room and escorted to an interior cabin, with two single beds which we were happy to have, just to get some sleep given that we were now totally exhausted. The issue was not resolved to our satisfaction given that we were told we could continue to use the interior cabin to sleep! When we had paid for a window to wake in the morning being able to see day light and enjoy the view. At 6PM the following day the noise started again this time we went directly to reception and were met by a member of the reception team who was to say the least condescending. We eventually got moved up a deck to the third level port side which was again an outside cabin with a window. The receptionist said “the noise was due to the weather and do not complain to me if you are again disturbed by splashes in your new cabin” we could not believe her attitude! We were made to feel that we should not complain about not being able to sleep while on holiday. Having cruised on both Princess and Royal Caribbean cruises whose level of service was exceptional we thought that the level of service on the Discovery II would be the same as the TUI Spirit ship which we have also been on, this was defiantly not the case. We had booked two trips one being a bike ride with Kyle who was a lovely chap in-fact the ride was basically him and the two of us, he gave us a good day out, the second trip the Navarda walk was however cancelled and the notification of this was via a note under the door this may have been acceptable if nothing else had been a problem but in the circumstances we expected to be given the bad news personally, again very poor customer service. The cancelling notification said we would receive a refund, however we have not at the time of writing received anything. The food on board was disappointing with little variety for example the salads had grated carrot and iceberg lettuce etc however no olives or radishes or cellery or beetroot, at breakfast no black pudding, all of which was available on the TUI Spirit cruise which we went on in April 2017. I had asked for olives and was told they were only available at the bar with a gin and tonic? On complaining by filling in a customer survey, the food improved and a variety of different salad items appeared including olives and fennel. This improvement seems to have been initiated by other people also complaining which resulted in a lot of management people being personally present in the buffet restaurant over the last two days. The shows we found for the week we were on the ship were good however we spoke to a passenger who had been on the ship for two weeks and were told the shows were the same for the second week. Foolishly before we went on the Discovery II we booked to go again on the same ship to the Baltics in August 2018. We know that there is a name change due for the ship we now know feel that we know why. Read Less

On Deck 9 only drawback was the noise on the first night -party night and early morning when you could hear the tables and chairs/lounges being pulled across the deck. Price to pay for being close to the Pool & Buffet deck. There is 2 seated restaurants, great food and entertainment from the singing waiters, 2 Buffet restaurants on deck 10, full english breakfast, continental, breakfast including ham and cheese, Cereals and fruits, also a Egg station for freshly made omelettes/or egg dishes and another for fresh pancakes and waffles. Full selection for Lunch & Dinner which changed daily included curries, pasta dishes, rice , fries and veg and an extra selection which could be wok cooked dishes or carved meat. You never need to go hungry, something even for my picky husband-plain dishes. Also you have the Bistro extra payment of approx £19.95 very special. you can is the seated restaurants pay extra for T Bone steak(£12.95) lovely. The Entertainment is brilliant with two main shows nightly - fantastic singers and dancers everyone puts in 100%. Africa show needs to be seen and their own group Mussik unlimited are full of life and wonderful voices. You can see them individually playing, guitars, pianos or singing at the many different venues onboard. Deck 9 has the quietest bar which has a piano easily accessible from our cabin. The SANA SPA needs to be visited as it a peaceful oasis with hairdressing and body(massages)- hot stones was fantastic. You can book a jacuzzi for a really indulgent treat. It was a treat after being out and about on the excursions, very relaxing. You can also book a photo shoot from the staff who take the photos as you join the cruise and in restaurants and excursions. Great for those on honeymoons or celebrating something special. The excursions have very informed guides and are fascinating to see the various islands, We enjoyed Madeira Cable car and botanical gardens, Fire mountain and Catamaran trips. Ports had plenty of ways to see the islands from Tuxzi's, taxis and buses- just visit the destination desk near reception. If you are celebrating you can book some special things at the celebrations desk. The Newspaper also has announcements and information on the ports. The food was good and always available and hot. The colourful coasts destinations: apart from Gran Canaria and Madeira, the ship was far to far away from the ports. I also think the excursions are very over priced, especially if there is a family of you going. The kasbah/souk excursion cost £90 for 3 adults and was terrible, we had over an hour in a place you could buy a local handbag or a pair of aladdin shoes, the rest of the items were far too big to transport and we were sat around waiting for that part of the tour to finish. Then we had 50 mins in a market that would take all day to go round. I felt totally ripped off. The ship itself is looking a bit tired, but was kept clean by the ever present staff, who were polite and hard working. The show and entertainment teams were excellent, Fran, Matt and Bethany were especially talented, with spanish lessons, singing (Bethany) and the brilliant game shows and not forgetting the excellent deck games. The evening shows in the Jubilee lounge were very professional and entertaining. The entertainment management we felt left something to be desired, there were some inappropriate comments made with children present from Jack the entertainer and we were disgusted at his innuendos during some of the game shows. And generally found Tayler and him were inapproachable. The waiters were all excellent and the service was very efficient and the chamber maids made our cabin up every day very well and were always polite when approached. Overall a lovely week, but some polishing needed. Read Less

My friend and i went on a cruise around the Canaries as it was my friends first time.i wanted it to be perfect i have sailed with Thomson for many years so it was my first choice. We boarded our flight on time but we had not set off after an hour when we asked why the steward said she would find out, people were getting nervous then the Captain announced we would have to wait for a pilot to board as there were two hundred and thirty passengers stranded in Spain so we needed to drop him off then fly on to Tenerife .I understand things could happen but were very disappointed we were not told from the beginning, also we were not given a drink while waiting .This had a knock on effect as by the time we landed at the port it was seven hours later ,we could have gone long haul. It was to late to get of the ship then.We were quickly shown to our room which was very clean and the stewards kept it that way coming in twice a day .The dining was good with a choice of dining rooms and plenty to chooze from . from then on the cruise was going great we loved the entertainment from relaxing music to great shows ,this was shown twice nightly the staff are a credit to Thompson ,but our room was 499 and every night it was very noisy as if furniture was being moved around. my self and my friend had to buy ear plugs .Also the water in the Jacuzzi turned green and stayed that way for days which was a shame as its one of my favourate things to do.The last day was back at Tenerife and we could only go for a stroll out as we did not have enough time to explore which was a shame .We enjoyed the ports of call but felt El Hierro was a wasted day and speaking to others they felt the same .All in all we had a great time .I would recommend Thompson to others and i have booked a cruise with Majesty again on the 16th May this year with my husband for our wedding Anniversary. Just hope we don't encounter any problems.People say they have received Loyalty upgrades or wine in there room but we never have and that's one thing i think Thomson need to look into because people like us who come back time after time keep Thomson a float if you pardon the pun. I've read many of the reviews regarding this cruise and can't believe how accurate they were. The flight and transfer were great and the embarkation was fast and efficient (although I've never seen the entertainment team doing this job before) and the cases were delivered very promptly to our cabin. But now to the cabin. It was small, very small. I was annoyed to find out that there was a weekly charge of £15 for the safe. And the sockets on board were continental. We had to buy an adapter of £6.95, which surprise, surprise were reduced to £4.95 later in the cruse. We were on deck3 and there was a permanent load noise coming from the engine room below. There wasn't an iron in the cabin, nor a laundry on the ship. There were only 3 channels on the TV, none of them showing any live sport. The shower used to flood the toilet when the ship sailed. Overall the food was of a decent standard. The two buffets could not cater for the numbers during breakfast and lunch so it was best to use the restaurants instead. The ships chargeable bistro was well work the money. It was far superior to that run by other cruise companies. The night time entertainment was adequate. Both the Spotlight show team and the ships group 'Muzzik Unlimited' worked hard but it really needed nightly comedians / singer/ magicians to give some variety. The day time entertainment programme was a little limited. The table tennis was just a winner stops on affair. Far better to have a double knockout where passengers get to meet one another. On deck the Jacuzzi should have had a health warning. Throughout the day it changed colour from brown to a dark green. And there was a thick coating of suntan oil around the sides of it. The staff, in general, were very friendly. However there were a few who needed to go to charm school. The best guy on board was the ever smiling cleaner of the stairs handrails.(how could he be so happy doing such a dull job all day) During the cruise I felt that Thomson's just wanted to save money. I've already mentioned about charging for the safe. But the most obvious of these was having to leave port at 6pm for most of the time. It would have been nice to have an evening off the ship. And when we started to sail the ship was always rocking. Was this yet another cost saver by not having the stabilisers switched on until we were away land. The good news is that this tired ship is being replaced next year Read Less

Looking for a new way to take our holiday, we decided to try cruising. Using the many sites dedicated to providing all the information anyone could ever need about the subject, we found a suitable Itinerary on Thomson’s Majesty. The cruise is called the Colourful Coasts, and, as we wanted to revisit the site of our honeymoon, Madeira, whilst seeing more of the islands that go to make up the Canaries, another location we had long wanted to visit, fully met the bill. With good weather forecast for the week in mid-march, we flew from Gatwick to Tenerife, a 5 hour flight due to the French air traffic control strike. On the way back, although we left almost an hour late, heavy tail wins meant we arrived on time at a very cold Gatwick, where we then had to wait for coaches to arrive to take us to the Terminal. We estimated that we spent an extra 2 – 3 hours travelling to and from Tenerife. On first impressions, and forewarned from the many reviews we read, the ship looked slightly past it’s best, with at least 2 other previous names visible on its proud bows. Immediately, though, it was obvious that a) the ship was continually cleaned and painted, with cabin widows being washed dialy and b) hygiene was paramount. In fact the number of times we saw cabin staff cleaning the main stair rails almost matched the large number of alcohol hand dispensers that are placed at all the requisite locations to protect the guest from the dread norovirus. The boat initially seems very large, with many narrow corridors and effectively 7 floors, accessible through 3 main staircases and lifts causing us some confusion as to where to find food, drinks and entertainment, but by the 3rd day we had a good mental map of the layout. Food was plentiful and especially good in the Bistro. If you are lucky enough to be celebrating a special date, then let them know and look out for one of the best “Staff” bands we have had the honour to serenaded by. The buffet food provided throughout the day is acceptable and offers some variation day to day. We did find however, that the Chef’s stations, where food was prepared freshly as you waited, provided a much better alternative and I would recommend the omelettes. Oh yes, and the scones; surprisingly, I had the best scones I have ever had as part of the afternoon tea offering. The waiter service restaurants provide a good quality meal, with some variation on the menu. It is restricted for none meat eaters and some improvisation was required; though the waiters and kitchen where always happy to oblige. One of the main memories from our trip were the happy, smiling, competent waiters that made dining always fun and very enjoyable. These restaurants offer a Share or No share option, with sharing meaning that you could sit with 2 to 6 other passengers. The No share option meant that you had a wait sometimes for a table, which were not always in the best position. As we made the best of all the available excursions organised before sailing, we were tucked up in the very comfortable beds long before the main entertainment got underway. If the promised entertainment is one of your main reasons for going on a cruise, please check out the reviews elsewhere to see what others think of it. We found that the Royal Observatory was always a quiet oasis from the hurly burly of the pool and upper decks; both of which were usually packed due to the mostly fantastic sunny weather. In the evening, the entertainment in this bar was quiet and suited to a relaxing cocktail (a different special every day) before turning in. The Cabin was small, with the ensuite even smaller. The maids look after the rooms as well as any good hotel. The shower is hot and powerful. The toilets take a little getting used to and in our case became a little temperamental at one point. The ship’s plumbers resolved the problems quickly, though reception needed a couple of reminders on one occasion. A few other points to note (some specific to when we sailed) Cell phones are usable pretty much all the time, but check the charges carefully, As with shares, ships can go up and down, a lot, as we found during a 24 hour storm, so take suitable anti seasickness medicines. It is said that if you are susceptible, then getting a cabin near the centre of the boat and on a lower deck may reduce the amount of movement during these rough passages, The itinerary can change at short notice, in our case the storm meant that the sail to the African port was cancelled, giving everyone an extra day in Madeira (no bad thing) Internet access is available on the boat in some locations but not cheap, again check charges. A number of the ports had free wifi available in the embarkation halls, as do a lot of the bars in the towns visited, The guides on the three excursions we took where all local, spoke good English and were extremely knowledgeable about their respective islands, often bringing a very different historical view with some good humour thrown in, There are very few bars showing British sports within walking distance of the ports, we found TripAdvisor invaluable in helping us find somewhere to watch the 6 nations games, If you are lucky you will see dolphins and wandering seabirds from the ship as it sails, keep an eye out over the front of the boat. First time cruisers, chose Thompson Majesty for all round package. Lovely ship with 1st class staff, from arrival to departure, everyone was really friendly & helpful. Stewards worked non stop to ensure a spotless ship from top to bottom, housekeeping was also first class, with cabins cleaned top to toe. Entertainment was excellent, with superb solo & group performances daily. Food on hand almost all day & night, good quality & plenty of it. Drinks were reasonably priced. Only downside to an otherwise excellent holiday was the lack of WIFI for the one long day at sea, I understand we were at sea but WIFI package was available to buy & at best service was sporadic. I think as money spent it should be included in price & upgraded. Our cabin was on the 8th floor, ship was as quiet as you could expect a ship to be, very slight swell was actually very relaxing during travel, which was mostly through the night. Read Less

We have travelled with Thomson many times before, Celebration, Destiny this was our first time on the Majesty and we could not fault it in any way. From start to finish every part of our holiday was handled guickly and efficiently from check in at Manchester right through to our return excellent! Whilst the ship itself is not a modern all singing all dancing one I.e not like the modern ones, although why anyone would want a climbing wall on a ship escapes me. We found the ship to be in a very good condition nothing like some of the reports on various review sights. Our cabin no 6029 was across ship, very large lovely bathroom comfortable beds and everthing you could need. We dined in the seven seas restaraunt, food was great, one thing that concerned me was the open seating but I was suprised how much we enjoyed this meeting different people each meal time. Portions more than adiquate, some people in their reviews have said portions are small, untrue, if you want more the waiters will bring you more or you can then go to self serf and have more. Entertainment was very good and the team puts a lot of effort into making sure you have a good time. Service on bord is first class in all respects, waiters and bar staff are on the go all the time. As we did live in the Canaries for a number of years we tended mostly to stay on board. Only complaint I would have is with fellow passengers who leave towels on loungers, remember it is passengers who do this NOT cruise staff. Finally having travelled with various cruise lines including Celebrity and Royal Carrabean we still prefer Thompson. Read Less

This was our first Thomson cruise and sadly will probably be our last. The joining and airport organisation was very good. We had upgraded to an outside cabin but were disappointed with the size and standard with loose taps, bodged shower, diesel smells and very cramped small beds. The drawers was so close they wouldn't open and the bed valances dropped down every day. We left the cabin to discover the rest of the ship and restaurants. We were very disappointed that the two main restaurants both had the SAME menu. In addition the choices were very limited with only four or five choices each day. At the self service restaurants - two of them - also had identical menus. The quality of food served was very good and the service excellent. It would have been so much better had each restaurant served a different selection - perhaps themed. The formal evening was good but marred by the intrusive photographers. The real stars of the cruise was the entertainment team - such a multi talented group - without them the cruise would have been a waste of money. The itinerary was one of the reasons we chose Thomson but were bewildered by the schedule. We left each port in the afternoon only for the captain to announce that the engines would be stopped during the night as we would arrive too early. Given the places we berthed it appeared obvious that Thomsons' were saving berthing fees by staying the minimum of time and maximizing customer spending time with ridiculous "auctions and selling opportunities" The shore excursions were very poorly described and not at all inviting. Coupled with the cost this made us avoid them all and do our own thing. Thomson should take a leaf out of the Aida Blu cruise ship that followed us around - their bicycles were all electric which would have been more attractive given the average age group of our fellow passengers. They provided free shuttle services between the ship and town and berthed much closer to the various town centres. We both suffered from lung infections after 4 days - our doctor suggested it may have been from the water supply and after 12 days we are still suffering Overall we were very disappointed with our Thomson cruise and would need a good incentive before attempting another cruise - certainly not on the Majesty.
