I Chose trip for Itinerary (Bucket list) – NCL Spirit has not yet got back in Pre-Covid Shape – or something…

Pago Pago

After thoroughly enjoying a New York to Bermuda cruise on NCL, we were hooked. Plans for a second cruise fell through so I was looking for our next opportunity. We were going to visit our daughter in Australia and decided to take the long way home. I saw a back to back cruise from Sydney to Tahiti and then Tahiti to Honolulu and booked it to experience the South Pacific — a place I dreamed about but never thought I’d ever visit. Apparently 270 fellow passengers felt the same way because that is how many remained to go on this Tahiti to Hawaii cruise. 

Thumbs up for how NCL handled the transition day. We were in the same stateroom so we just had to turn over our passports for a few days, pick them up and get new keycards the night before transition day. We had stickers to wear so people knew we didn’t have to go to embarkation etc. No packing, have to vacate ship - none of that. Easy peasy. 

The ship is kept scrupulously clean. We often met crew keeping the chrome shiny and the floors clean. They wash the pool devs down 2x a day. 

The crew works hard but always a friendly hello and more than willing to make sure you get what you need. 

I did lots more trivia and had lots more fun on the ship interacting with fellow cruisers. (Maybe because we didn’t have a balcony?) The cruise director, Jerry and assistant cruise director Joey were great and went out of their way to interact with passengers. They also were very agreeable to suggestions. One person wanted more dance events and there were suddenly a several dance sessions every sea day. I caught one and enjoyed it very much. We had a 16 day cruise followed by this 12 day one and we really enjoyed the sea days so far. 

I like dining on NCL. Most mornings at the Garden cafe at breakfast. Try to skip lunch but if needed, a salad at the buffet or lunch at the Local was very enjoyable. I loved the local. A great hamburger, wings, or the Cuban pork were my favorites. We hit the Local mid afternoon to late night for those late nights! Dinner was mostly in Windows. Taste has the same menu but I thought it was noisier and preferred Windows. One night I didn’t like the entree so the waiter encouraged me to try something else. I did and it was fantastic. I have to say whatever they do with eggplant is delicious. They had a pecan crusted fried chicken at lunch one day at the buffet and I still dream about it. They had a pork schnitzel at the buffet one night at dinner that had me drooling. The Indian food was always good and the prime rib in Windows was omg good. 

The cruise tours were always good but as usual, some were better than others. I would have to say the Motu beach excursion and bbq at Moorea was fantastic. I unfortunately did not spend much time researching trips and if I had to do over I would have tried a few tours that explained island life and culture. I was focused on beaches and snorkeling! If you like to snorkel, make room in the suitcase for a complete snorkel set of your own, you won’t regret it. You can snorkel without fins but I liked it when I could get fins. I’m investing in a set when I get home! 

We hired a cab at American Samoa, did cruise tours at Raiatea, New Caledonia and Moorea. We did a walking tour I found online at Papeete. We booked independent tours in n Moorea and Raiatea. If you are in Raiatea, you must go to Taha’a. We did on our repeat visit and did not regret. There are always vendors at the piers offering tours as well if you like to just spur of the moment. They are usually a bit cheaper and people had good success using them. (PS The people in the know know that tours will get you to the back ship on time even if independently booked — I know if one family left behind and one couple who the ship was held for a few minutes and both those were in their own, no tour.) 

On the remote islands, (Sydney to Tahiti) we were tendered there and  you could swim or snorkel at the islands we just walked, swam, walked some more. On one we were able to rent snorkel set and enjoyed that. 

This itinerary was perfect and we are having one of the best trips of our lives. At 66 I’m a bit less flexible but I’ve snorkeled, swam, sunned and walked and enjoyed every moment so far.

Loved back to back cruises on Spirit

The staff on Norwegian Spirit were excellent. 

Especially the dining waiters and cooks.

This was helped being the ship was only half full but they were always smiling and helpful with any requests.

The food was always fresh, tasty and plenty of variety.

Definitely the highlight of our cruise was the island of Moorea.

A short boat cruise from the dock took us to a spot waist deep so we could snorkel/swim with non dangerous stingrays and reef sharks in crystal clear water.

Then on to a motu (small island) for lunch and local entertainment.

The ship itself is immaculate, having been refurbished over the Covid lockdown.

A few suggestions though-

Embarkation was very slow and at times we were given conflicting directions by ground staff.

Some of the events held in the atrium could have been moved to a room with more seating and the staff running them were at times hard to understand with english being their second language.

More lactose free options are needed.

We feel the theatre could have been more utilised (perhaps a few movies while at sea?).

Overall we were very pleased and look forward to our next cruise.

Moorea Paradise

Polynesia was on our bucket list and the timing for this cruise worked out.  We've sailed on Norwegian before and were generally pleased although those were on larger/newer ships.  The itinerary was  Tahiti to Sydney with stops in Moorea, Bora Bora, Samoa, and FIJI (two stops here at Lautoka and Dravuni).  We were a little surprised to get an text message 2 days before sailing about the need to secure Australian visas.  The online process for securing them was not too taxing (you'd better have smart phone and know how to use it) but it would have been nice to get more warning.  The embarkation in Tahiti was a little chaotic. There was a considerable amount of covid paper work required because Australia and FIJI wanted proof of vaccination.  Since NCL has no terminal in Tahiti, this all had to be done on the boat; awkward with 350 people all arriving at the same time.   This itinerary has no time in Tahiti. We arrived at 9pm and sailed at midnight.  You need arrive a day early if you want to see Tahiti.  We heard from other guests that NCL offered Pre-cruise package but we never were told about that.    

It's an old boat (1998) but we think they did a nice job on the 2020 refurb. Everything looks very fresh. Our window cabin on deck 8 was small but the ample storage space somewhat made up for that.  As to be expected however bathroom is, overall,  painful small although the shower seemed slightly bigger than I'm used to.  I like the USB ports on both sides of the bed.  With all the technology we've seen on other ships and 2020 refurb, I was surprised how little interactivity there was on the TV.  You can't check your account or book excursions. 

The food was quite good  not up to what we recently experienced on Oceania but that may be comparing apples and oranges.  We ate most of our meals at Taste which we found more comfortable than Windows.  Food at the Garden Cafe was good with plenty of variety.  While the breakfast at the Garden Cafe didn't have much variety what they did have was excellent.  The omelets being some the best we've ever experienced on a cruise.  Since the boat was only half full there was never a wait to get custom eggs.  

We ate in two specialty restaurants on our package.  Cagney's and LaBistro.  The food was excellent in both places although seafood entrée at  LaBistro was remarkably small.  We're still getting used to the specialty restaurants being Ala carte rather than a flat up charge.  Without the package, our two meals would have cost $155 and $183 respectively without wine.  Grossly overpriced by any standard.  I can't imagine anyone paying those prices. I wonder if they're set that high to motivate people to buy packages. 

The entertainment was generally  excellent both the production shows and the headline acts.  We also enjoyed the other musical offerings; two singing groups and the piano player.  The comedian was fair.  I can't say there was a lot do during the day and that is a concern with an itinerary that's half sea days.  There were no enrichment lectures or port talks both of which we've come to expect.  The large casino was virtually empty most of the time (I played in a couple of Hold em tournaments which were fun).   I wonder if there's now so much casino gambling available on shore that gambling on the ship has lost its allure.   With regard to the Thermal Suite, I'd echo a previous reviewer who complained about the lack of amenities - at least compared what's found larger NCL ships.  The charge for using it is way out of line given what they offer. 

We enjoyed all the ports and used ship excursions for all of them which were excellent.  Our only complaint related to our stop at Dravuni, a beach only island in FIJI.  The ship offers no excursions there and it an inadequate job of explaining what amenities were available on the Island (essentially none) and what we were supposed to do there. Once we understood the lay of the land it was fun.  Our stop in New Caledonia was cancelled without explanation.  They also, again without explanation, switched from Pago Pago in American Samoa to Apia in Samoa. We did enjoy Samoa. 

While virtually everything about the cruise was positive,  I seriously doubt we would ever sail on this ship again.  It seemed to us that the public spaces are wildly undersized for the capacity of the ship.  As noted above, we sailed only half full yet many venues were often crowded. The usual lack of sufficient deck chairs was exacerbated by the fact that there were  NO deck chairs permanently in the shade.  The area where such chairs would normally be found, under the overhang from the walkway on the deck above the pool is all taken up with four person tables.  I can only guess that they created so much outdoor eating space because if the boat is at capacity there's not enough seating in the Garden Cafe.  You also see this issue in the Atrium area in the center of the ship which is major entertainment venue.  All of the  available seating was routinely occupied again with the ship ONLY HALF FULL.   I acknowledge that none of the other passenger reviews nor the Cruise Critic reviews pick up on this so maybe I'm exaggerating but certainly how it looked to me.

Excellent cruise but in part because ship was half full

Chose this cruise for the unique opportunity to see both French Polynesia and Hawaii, and the ports of call did not disappoint. What did disappoint was the lack of effort and variety that comprised activities while at sea. With 4 straight days at sea, we were hoping for a full option of things to do, but the daily itinerary was pretty much recycled from one day to the next. There were not a lot of activities available and not a lot of energy that went into facilitating them. The shows were also very hit and miss. So, we loved being in port but didn't enjoy the long stretch of days at sea. 

Ports of Call

- Excellent options. We loved the variety and seeing these incredible places is why we picked the cruise. The only negative is that we often arrived a little late, so rarely did we get off the ship on time. Also, you must tender into Bora bora and Moorea, so make sure to get an early tender group (get passes early the  morning of in the Spinnacker Lounge) or you will wait 1-2 hours just to get off.

Food

- Average. There isn't a lobster night nor can you get crab legs without visiting a specialty restaurant and paying a hefty upcharge. The main dining room features New York steak (pretty good) and lots of chicken, lamb, and pork dishes. Shrimp was an option every 2 or 3 days. The buffet was pretty good. The complimentary Silk Asian restaurant was very good but has a limited menu. 

Entertainment

- Fair. There were about 3 of the 12 shows that were quite good. The magician was fine but you are not likely to see any tricks you haven't already. The comedian was terribly not funny and the show was awkwardly quiet and LONG for all involved. The psychic comedian WAS funny and great. Elements shows on the last night was also quite good. The singers in the middle just depend on your taste.

Staff

Most were quite excellent and always helpful and positive. Did not care at all for Carlos the cruise director. His announcements took forever to say very little and we found him condescending. When NCL completely botched the immigration process by not following the group process they outlined in the Daily (Shore excursion first, then deck 11, 10...), he blamed the elevators and passengers. It was a disaster & took FOREVER for us to get off the boat. As a result, most were late to shore excursions. Although they waited, this cut time off the excursion for everyone.

Ship

Average. It's smaller & there's not a lot to do. There is one ping pong table, one sports court, two golf swing areas, 2 pools, and 6 hot tubs. The gym is quite small and has a lower ceiling so no overhead lifting if you're tall. Stateroom was fine but of course small as is expected. The speakers for the hallway music were so loud that we heard it all the time in our room. No response to repeated attempts to turn it down at night so we could sleep better. 

Daily activities

Poor. Very little variety and events are recycled from one day to the next, so after a day or 2, you've done them all. With 4 straight days at sea, we got a bit stir crazy

Excellent Ports of Call, Mundane Days at Sea

Excellent service on the ship. Small ship, not too many people, this is good.  Too many giant screens, not necessary at all especially when listening to a band playing music.  The band Hotwire is excellent, if you want to dance. 

Disappointed that all communication are in English only.  On other companies it is in multiple languages.    

Food was just ok.  Japanese and Italian restaurants were the best.  Reserve early.  The buffet is not very large but there is a good variety.  

The service at restaurants, bars, cabin, is excellent.  All employees are very friendly ans always smiling. 

We had to past a COVID test while on board because we were both not feeling well.  We had been told that it was free.  We met the doctor but he did not examine us, he talked with us of all kind of stuff and gave me sirop.  We were not happy to realize the day after that this conversation and tests cost us more than $600 US.  Not impressed at all and felt fooled by people (employees) who said it was free. 

I would rate this ship a 3.5 stars.

First cruise with NCL - not impressed

We were so excited to go on this cruise as it was our first family vacation in over 4 years. We have cruised several times before and have always had a positive experience. This was the first time we had gone on a cruise with Norwegian, but we had heard so many good things about this cruise line I didn't expect all the issues we had! 

This was the first time I have travelled internationally with my kids. After booking this cruise I was told that because they were travelling with both parents, passports were not needed, and they could travel with just birth certificates. I realize that if you have travelled internationally before, that probably rings warning bells, but for someone who doesn't travel much, I trusted that they knew what they were talking about. I called to verify, talking to multiple people on multiple days and was told again and again, passport was not required, but my 16 yo would need a photo ID, because he was not considered a minor for purposes of travel. When I finally confronted them, asking if they were really sure my kids did not need passports, they acted like I was insane to think otherwise, and somehow they lost the recordings of all my prior conversations, even though I had the dates and times. They did "find" one phone conversation, which I was not allowed to listen to, but they assured me we did not discuss documents in that conversation.  At great expense, with less than two weeks before our departure, we barely were able to get the passports. Crisis averted. If this was the only issue I might have overlooked it, but unfortunately this is not where things ended.

My son is Autistic, and they offered us enrollment in their "ACCESS" program, which I did enroll him in, and we received confirmation that we would be greeted on the pier at the time of embarkation, so they could help us through the process (long waits in crowded spaces can trigger meltdowns). We were NOT met on the pier and no one there had ever heard of such a thing, even though I had the email stating that would happen. Thankfully we were able to make it through the process without a meltdown but it was another broken promise of services never rendered. 

About three weeks before our embarkation I received an email apologizing that the ship no longer provided amenities for kids under 13, and as an apology my youngest (12) would receive a $100 credit for the arcade on the ship. The email also said that teen events would be organized and times and locations would be announced on the ship. When we arrived on the ship we asked about the arcade and were told that there was no arcade on the ship and I misunderstood the email. I showed them that we had the credit on our boarding paperwork, which they could not explain but would "file a report" and the customer service manager would get back to me (they never did, despite my follow-up and reassurances that they would). If it matters, they offered to have the manager call me with the results of the report, I never asked to speak with the manager prior to that offer.

We purchased the soda packages for our kids, and my son's favorite soda (orange) was free and included about 60% of the time, but the dining room (the free one not the paid restaurants) frequently (but not always) told us that orange soda is extra and not included in the package. It was however included at all of the bars. This is utterly ridiculous.  Why in the world would it be free in one location and not another unless they are trying to get us to pay more than necessary. This was the only beverage that we had this issue with on the ship, and it seemed to depend on what staff was on duty that day since it wasn't always an extra charge, even in the dining room. 

During our at sea days, we ran into another family that informed us that they had just been released from quarantine and that there were 100-200 people being quarantined on the ship with COVID from a previous cruise that had been transferred from one cruise to another to finish their quarantine. I was shocked that they would do this, that the people coming from quarantine were not required to mask (as per CDC regulations) and that this information was not communicated to people. Not surprisingly myself and my husband got COVID on the ship. I will say that this was a risk we took, but if I had known that after all the testing we were required to do that they deliberately and knowingly onboarded people who were actively sick with COVID, I would not have gone on this cruise. 

While we were in quarantine, they did bring us food 3x per day, but my kids (who were never sick but required to isolate with us) were not allowed to have anything to drink but water and milk (my son cannot drink milk) because they did not allow quarantined cabins to use their drink packages (nor did they refund us at all). We could order drinks but again we had to pay extra ($5 per can of soda), even though the rest of the meal was included at no charge. 

During the quarantine period, which was near the end of our cruise, we learned that we would have to continue our quarantine on the island, which was totally fine, and expected. So I called their guest service desk to ask about our flights because our flights were booked through Norwegian. At that time I was told they were waiting to hear from their National office and the Guest Service manager would call me back that day or first thing the next day. Two full days later I still had not heard anything so I called back. They transferred me to medical who could tell me nothing, so I called GS back and asked to talk to the manager. They told me they would have them call me right away. They then had medical call me. Medical said there was nothing anyone on the ship could do because they did not have access to that information and no one at guest services would have said what they did because "that is not our procedure".  They then told me it would all be taken care of by their CARE team when we were transferred to the hotel.

I will say, the hotel they moved us to was one of the highlights of the trip (Doubletree in Waikiki, I highly recommend them!). The hotel's service was fantastic. However, there was a group of us and every single person asked the hotel for information because EVERYONE felt that the cruise line was keeping them in the dark about what plans were and what would happen next. Unfortunately the hotel also did not know and said they were just providing accommodations, as expected. We were told to wait for the CARE team to contact us, and the cruise line promised we would be contacted in 24 hours. Two days later, I spent 3 hours on hold trying to reach someone at Norwegian, using the phone number they gave us if we needed to reach them before the CARE team contacted us, but I was never able to reach a person. I finally called the airline directly, and after explaining the situation, they finally agreed to help us even though the flights were booked by Norwegian and not us. At the time of this writing it has been over a week, we are home, and I still have never heard from the mythical "CARE" team.

In the end, this was the most frustrating and stressful cruise that I have ever been on. I have never ever been on a vacation where the guest services people were so dismissive and not once followed through on what they said they would do. This was my first cruise with Norwegian, and it will most definitely be my last.

Customer service is severely lacking

We used the NCL Promotional Air - Most everyone had to as there are only two scheduled flights to Tahiti per day.  They got us to LAX then had 3 maybe 4 charter flights to Tahiti.  Lucky for us we were on one of the latter flights that was maybe 2/3 full so we could spread out.  The seats in the economy section of the “Air Tahiti Nui” Airbus A310 were most uncomfortable.  We arrived with no incident.

Covid: Testing (required by ship) along with vaccination.  However, they did not inform us that there were already (rumors have it) about 200 people on the ship quarantined with Covid.  My guess is that when they tested to go back to the US, they had a boatload of positive.

Busses took us to the ship (Uneventful).

We stood outside under straight leg canopies with the wind at about 30 MPH for security and document check.  It was a big mess!!  I’ll leave it at that.

We were required to surrender Passports until we left French Polynesia (we have been required to do this on some South America cruises so I was not surprised, but many passengers were because they were never warned of this requirement).   

The Cabin (we were in a balcony) would have been ‘OK’ for a 1999 built ship; but during the upgrade, I believe they decided they needed to put in KING size beds. We had to take turns walking around the bed to get from one side to the other. 

The bathroom was also very 1999 vintage.  

Entertainment on the ship was very weak with a few exceptions.  One night the evening Production was canceled completely.  (BTW there was only one performance per night at 9:00!)  I must say that the ship dancers were outstanding in their performances.

Shore excursion were very expensive and hit or miss.  I have seen a lot of other reviewers go into some detail on those.

Dining was not comparable  to other NCL ships I have been on.  They did run out of many items, but that was not unbearable.

The Cruise Director was ‘New’ and seemed like a frustrated comedian.  Not the best Cruise Director I have ever had.  In an attempt to be funny, he hassled people as they left when the show was over during his ‘what’s next’ sales pitch.  

Did not see a any of the senior staff, pretty much invisible.  I did approach the Chief Engineer who I saw in the Spinnaker Lounge a couple of times; definitely not the friendly type! 

No session with the captain & staff to answer questions or provide information about the ship, etc.

Security Officers were spotted walking around frequently  (I suspect trying to identify quartined passengers who left their cabins!!).  

As the Spirit moves to the Alaska Market, I suspect that it will be a very heavily discounted ship, so if you don’t mind fending for yourself most of the time you could get a bargain!  I suspect that when the SPIRIT moves to the heavily saturated market of Alaska they will either Shape up or Ship out.

The good:  The crew were very accommodating and happy to be working again.  (It showed).

We were traveling with another couple and we brought a game to play as a group.  If not for that, the sea days would have been very long unless you like to play multiple trivia games per day!

We went out on our on in Hawaii (somewhat of a risk due to port locations) but we were LUCKY, and had good tours.

OH One More!

The cost of the Thermal Suites was $250.00 per person for the trip.  (i paid because I wanted to use the Steam Room) For that price, you were allowed to use the locker room, the sauna, and the steam room.  It also included the area with the heated lounges and two additional rain showers.  That was extremely  expensive for the facilities offered.  Most ships allow use of the lockers and at least the sauna for all passengers (FREE).  - the good - I never saw more than 2 people in the Entirety of the Thermal Suites the entire cruise (including sea days)!!

We chose this cruise firstly for the itinerary but also for the ship. We have been on the Spirit before and were looking forward to seeing the ship refitted. We were not disappointed, even though one of the entertainment areas was still being refitted.  The new atrium was a great place to have trivia and other games and it was a nice comfortable spot for a coffee or something stronger. The new Spice H2O was a nice addition to the ship.

The food on board was delicious and the service was impeccable.  We ate in the Bistro on the second night and really enjoyed the experience.  This was the case in Cagney's and Onda by Scarpetti.  We ate mostly at the Garden Cafe at breakfast and lunch times and there was always plenty to choose from. 

The entertainment on board was professional and varied and there was always plenty to do during the sea days. The ships itinerary was wonderful, all the islands we visited were amazing. This was our first time in the South Pacific and we can't wait to come back. The excursions we booked via Norwegian all went well and were well organised even if a bit pricy.

The staff were a credit to the NCL brand. There was always a smile and a welcome. I have to mention the chap on the Internet desk, he really helped us out with the problems we were having connecting to the onboard wifi.  All in all we had a marvellous trip to a most wonderful part of the world.

Wonderful South Pacific

We have been cruising for a long time and we were really excited to try NCL,  but it was quite disappointing, considering how much we paid and in comparation with other cruises.

To start explaining, they keep adding service charges for EVERYTHING, and the day before leaving we found out that they were also charging a room service charge: $16 per person, PER DAY. Considering how much we paid for the cabin, you would expect this to be included. They were really cheeky with “service charges” during the cruise, including whatever they please in this category and charging it directly to the account. They also made mistakes with different charges and they had to amend different times, so we felt we needed to keep an eye constantly after different mistakes. Even a few days after we booked the cruise, they cancelled it a day later for no explicable reason except for an 'error' on their part. That, as you can imagine caused us a huge deal of stress. It took us several hours on the phone to fix it. That was already a red flag 

In regards to the destinations, and excursions, we were really excited about going to Maui and they changed in the last minute. The excursions were really expensive and most of the times the places we were meant to see in the excursion were changed and we received no information about it prior the excursion. 

The cabin was quite small even though we had a balcony cabin. The pool remained close for most of the cruise, with different people complaining about it. The gym facilities were really good. 

Entretaintment wise, there was just not enough. There was very little to do and we specially noticed it in the days at sea. They only offered one show a day that most of the time we found quite boring (loads of vocalists). We also had a bad experience in one of the shows were staff from the cruise sat in front of us and they were really rude (constantly on their phones, talking between them and constantly moving, which was extremely distracting and we were all noticing). We complained about it but nothing was done. The TV entertainment was really poor, with only some TV channels that would repeat the same content over and over and no option to select a film to watch. Again, we specially feel the pain of this during the days at see when it would have been nice to watch a film in the evening.

The restauran’s food was a hit and miss but the buffet food was really good. On another positive note, most of the staff (specially housekeepers and restaurant staff), were really lovely and nice. 

All in all, as you can see, we can’t recommend this cruise and we won’t be using NCL anymore.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Many other cruise lines much better than NCL

Tahiti to Hawaii inaugural cruise for this port and updated ship. They took up all passports and would not give back as stated till 6 days into cruise after visiting other countries.  Forgot to load orange juice onto ship. No one knows anything.  Told no daily puzzles or library area by ft desk.  Wrong as a Multifunctional Room on top floor. Have canceled or changed over half of shore excursions leading to cancellation.  Have a shop on level 8 that is locked with shampoo and other potential personal items to buy and note saying display only and they are sold in another shop which that shop knows nothing about.  No t-shirts, personal essentials, perfume or cologne sold on board. What a loss of potential revenue for shareholders. Abundant quality hard working employees and supervising staff.   Food quality has diminished this year. No deck chairs or lounge chairs on Main deck 7 and shortage on upper decks.  Running low on several food items on menu.  Not prepared for only half occupancy.  Not a good look for NCL. No wonder stock is tanking. Smallest decks ever with just room for two chairs. Spa offered a $50 discount per person though have to charge more per person for couples as computer does not allow discounts for each person in booking couples massage so have to pay more.  We saved $329 by just saying no to their manipulation of numbers preying on the misinformed.  Expect to be harassed by the Park West art staff if just looking at pictures as they assume you must then want to get approved for an Art credit card.  Never mentioned cash.  Oh well.
