The Viking Homelands itinerary seemed perfect for us and though we hadn’t been on a Viking Cruise before, had always heard good things. The experience from start to finish was amazing and, now that we have been thoroughly spoiled, would find this cruise line hard to beat. The friendly staff’s prompt attentiveness and professionalism, exceptional logistics from embarking to disembarking (and all in-between), well planned tours in each country and variety of dining options exceeded our expectations. The ship is so well laid out that you can find quiet getaway areas or seek out activities to join, as you’d like. It never felt too crowded. The Viking staff take all feedback to heart and they seem to be continually looking for ways to achieve the wow factor for all of their guests. It was quite relaxing to leave all of the details to Viking and we are delighted to have had such a positive experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we love cruising. We find this way of travelling very relaxing and at the same time interesting. You can visit many cities and have a general idea of all the places the ship stop. The ship has all you need to have a fantastic vacation time. We never have to wait for a table to eat. The restaurants, all of them are amazing. The chef Ivan, from Chile took really good care of us. He showed as the kitchen and we were surprised how everything was being prepare for each meal in all of the restaurants. The cabin was very comfortable, as well as the bed and pillows, but the best part in the cabin was the bathroom. Really big for a ship bath with warm floor. They have service twice a day to keep the cabin always tidy and clean. We love the entertainment, the 4 young vocalists were exceptional, same as the pianists and the 2 girls who played stringed instruments. We only were sad because the ship couldn't stop in Poland port due to weather conditions. The excursions were very interesting same as the guides, specially Helen in Saint Petersburg. We did some included excursions and some prepaid ones. We already booked a future trip to Egypt in a Viking river for 2021. We recommend the pre and post cruise extensions, both great options, we enjoyed them a lot. We value very much; the quality of service Viking has. Although we did many other cruises with other companies, this last one was overall the best ever. Thanks Viking crew and everyone on the ship for a great experience and a phenomenal vacation. This was a thrilling cruise! I have always wanted to visit Scandinavia. The three destinations in Norway were varied and interesting. In Scavanger we visited the Nature Centre and not only experienced incredible exhibits but were treated to a panoramic tour of the north which I found thrilling to watch. Bergen was a wonderful way to end the cruise and when there we experienced plus 30C sunny weather! The highlight for me was the Pulpit Rock Cruise, in Eidfjiord Norway. I loved experiencing the fiords from the top of the boat! We loved visiting the varied destinations taking in St. Petersburg, Russia, Berlin Germany, Estonia, Finland and Denmark. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and pleasant. I learned so much about the history of these historic destinations. Stockholm is a beautiful city. Visiting there was a wonderful way to begin the cruise. We were blessed for the most part with fabulous weather which made our excursions, especially the walking tours, very pleasant. While on the ship we were able to meet many of our fellow passengers and enjoyed socializing with them. The entertainment on the ship was fabulous too! For example, the four young people who performed for example, the Abba Medley were outstanding as was our talented cruise director, the pianist, guitarist, and string duo and Viking Band and singers. The atmosphere on the ship was so pleasant that when sea days occurred, it was a pleasure just to stay on the ship. Guest services was extremely helpful, not to mention friendly. We felt we could go there for any concern. The Viking Sky is a well designed ship and I particularly appreciate the fa that it is a smaller ship than some ocean liners who carry thousands of passengers. In summary, the Itinerary was terrific and the luxury of the ship, friendliness of the crew made this the most memorable of my cruises thus far. I would highly recommend this cruise to family and friends. Read Less

We chose the cruise because of the variety of excellent ports of call. It was our first Viking cruise, and we were very impressed by the beauty of the ship, the attention to detail, the variety of food choices and restaurants, and caring staff. Every port was different, and every one worth visiting. We were impressed by the quality of excursions offered, whether included or extra. Each was led by a knowledgeable tour leader, and both informative and enjoyable. The lectures were all excellent, and the speakers knowledgeable about the varied subjects. We enjoyed The Explorer’s Lounge...a perfect place to relax before dinner or enjoy the sunset. Our room was comfortable and very well maintained by our excellent and caring cabin steward.. we never wanted for anything. We enjoyed the restaurants, the variety of food, and the ability to decide where and when we would have our meals. We chose to extend our vacation..both before and after the cruise. Both hotels we stayed in were very good, as were the Viking representatives in the hotel lobby. Well done, Viking! Read Less

We chose this cruise as a way to spend some time with dear friends. The primary driver was the itinerary, but we were also looking for a ship that would not overwhelm us with vast numbers of people and activities as the primary attractions were the destinations. The ship was wonderful as were the people serving us. Our cabin attendants were exceptional and the food and service throughout the ship were fantastic. We ate at all the restaurants on board and without exception I can say the quality was excellent, the best I have ever had on any previous cruise with other companies. There was plenty to do each day of the trip and always easy to find a private space to enjoy the journey. We really enjoyed the included tours and they were all expertly organized and completed on time. We will definitely return for another cruise in the future. Read Less

This trip was highly recommended by family and friends who had already been on this trip. It was everything they said it would be and more! The overall experience was world class exceptional! The visit to 8 countries and 11 ports was amazing. The tours were done by educated, experienced, well- spoken tour guides who provided a wealth of information. They gave us a glimpse of life for each country visited. There was a lot of fast paced walking so this trip is not for those with ambulatory issues. We loved every port and country we went to. The Viking ship, Sea, was the perfect size to get in and out of all the ports and waterways. It was beautiful and had much to offer. Our room was spacious, newly updated, great amenities and very comfortable. The food was world class. The variety of restaurant choices was perfect and each venue had great choices. The staff were very personable, funny, provided for every need. Allen and Dickie, our cabin stewards were exceptional at their job. They were very personable, respected our routine and privacy and provided what we needed. The entire shipboard staff were exceptional. I highly recommend using Viking Air to arrange flights. Perfect flight arrangements. Everything was well coordinated and organized from Viking. The trip was very costly but worth it! Read Less

This is our first Ocean cruise experience and it was absolutely wonderful! Our cabin was roomy and I was impressed about how the storage space was designed. The bed was really comfy and the bathroom was large for a stateroom. Although electrical outlets in the bathroom were only for razors or toothbrushes, there were ample 220 and 110 outlets in the main cabin. I really enjoyed having a port to charge my phone and IPad near our bed. Our cabin Stewart's were also wonderful and serviced our cabin twice daily. The goodies in the refrigerator were a real treat! I can't say enough about the dining options. There were so many choices and varieties of food. On several occasions , they offered special buffets specializing in foods of the regions. Although the specialty Italian and Chefs table Restuarant were a great, we really enjoyed the open dining of the World Cafe. We visited the Explorers lounge several times to enjoy the music but we loved watching the scenery off the bow. Lastly, we want to thank Viking for arraigning the unique welcoming at some of the Ports. In Scotland, bagpipes greeted us on 2 stops and the crew welcomed us home with music and dancing. OUR CRUISE was the British Isle Explorer. Read Less

We have been on six river cruises, five by Viking, and wanted to see if the Ocean cruise by Viking would measure up. Scandinavia was one of the last places we had not visited, and this was a chance to see a lot of it in one trip. The ship design was perfect; ergonomically, visually, seaworthiness. Our cabin was always clean and had plenty of room, even excess of storage! The cabin stewards always greeted us by name when we saw them, and all our requests were dealt with quickly, and with a smile. I am even more amazed with the food. How can you prepare 14 dinner menus without repeating much of it? Lettuce was fresh, fruit was fresh, bread was fresh. We were fortunate to get to use the private rooms for dining for our group of eight, and the service was personal and expeditious. The entertainment was ok. The four singers did not do a great job. The cruise director and her assistant were the most entertaining, even when singing! Departure was surprisingly wonderful. I have never been on a cruise that handled the departure, luggage, portage as well as Viking. Read Less

I chose this cruise because it went everywhere I wanted to go - especially Norway and Berlin. What I didn't know was how blown away I would be by the the actual process of cruising. The ship was smaller than many cruise ships but had everything we needed or could possibly want. The cabin was roomy. The veranda was wonderful for watching the world go by, especially when leaving port. The dining was incredible. My husband and I mostly went to the World Cafe. Day after day, I was able to find something to eat despite my dietary limitations. I loved the afternoon teas. I only wish I could have gone more often. I can't say enough about the wait staff. They were so friendly and got to know me because I was always down there getting iced tea. I didn't know what to expect for the entertainment but it was way above average. I must say that Elvis had to be my favorite. He is alive and sailing the seas on Viking. We also enjoyed the excursions into the various ports we stopped at. Highlights were the trips into St. Petersburg, Russia, Berlin, Germany and Bergen, Norway. We did not travel with children, this was an 18 and over cruise. I would say that unless they really were into travel, I would not even bring teenagers on this cruise. Would I go again? Well, not a repeat of this cruise but there is no question that we will be traveling again with Viking. Read Less

Friends really wanted to do a Viking Baltic Cruise and I went along. We arrived in Stockholm two nights before departure and had time to stroll around the city on our own which was a great thing to do. Boarding the ship was a simple process as was disembarkation on the last day. The ship itself is beautiful, simply but comfortably decorated and the rooms were nice and roomy. I loved the Atrium area on the first and second floor with it’s cozy seating in small groups to either read, listen to the great musicians, play a game or just relax with friends in a homey and intimate atmosphere. The staff was wonderful, so caring, so helpful and so friendly. We felt like family and were sorry to leave them behind at the end. The entertainment each evening was something we looked forward to and they were very talented people. It was nice to see them throughout the ship and be able to chat with them. I loved the shore excursions and how well organized they were. Finding our group was a simple process that took little time and soon we’d be on our way with knowledgeable local guides to tell us about the places we were visiting. The only exception was the guide Ursula we had in Copenhagen. She was not very forthcoming and only gave the minimum of explanations and could not answer the questions various guests asked. All the others were excellent. I believe that for some reason, we were sent to her group despite having originally been assigned to a different group, perhaps because her group was smaller and this was meant to even things out in the end. I wished we could have been in our original group as she seemed very informative at the start before we were reassigned. I had to visit the clinic and was so impressed with their caring and efficiency. The female nurse was particularly wonderful and knowledgeable, but unfortunately I can’t remember her name. The staff at the excursions desk on the first deck were ever so helpful and so accommodating, always available without too much of a wait if at all. Mostly someone was available as one arrived to ask a question or change a booking. And the food! So wonderful and tasty both in the main restaurant and on the 7th deck. My one comment would be perhaps offering suggestions for hearth healthy items. I did find the food very rich, particularly in the Restaurant, and portions of vegetables with the main courses could have been larger. Vegetables seemed to be a decorative item on the plate. I enjoyed my lunches more because on the 7th deck, I could chose more vegetables and fruit and smaller portions of protein and rich foods. Probably in the Restaurant, it was geared more to American tastes where they eat fewer vegetables and larger amounts of protein and rich foods. But I ate there every night because of the service. I absolutely loved my cruise! Read Less

Availability of restaurants, variation of menus and service were outstanding attributes of the food and beverages. We were able to schedule a cooking class and tour of the food prep area. All was terrific. Access to fitness center was always available. Making connections on all tours and excursions were well planned and staff prepared guests on what to expect and what to bring with us each day. The entertainment provided was excellent and for our age group, heather clancy made our trip exceptional and with the 4 entertainers made the evening presentations a night to remember. Locating our ship and making connections by air was consistently on time and without flaws. Viking did everything we hoped for and more when traveling with them abroad. My wife and I chose this voyage to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. The viking homelands are about as far as you can get from Australia and are a part of the world we'd never seen but read so much about. For us to get to Stockholm to embark required 22 hours of actual flying time and together with stopover times, the journey took 31 hours all told. The old joke about you don't have to be mad to do this but it helps, certainly applied to us 70 somethings. From being collected at the airport through to disembarkation, Vikings service was exceptional. I can endorse all that the previous 5 star reviewers have said about the ship, cabins, crew, food, excursions and so on. I want to make special mention of a couple great surprises. First one is about the cruise director, Heather Clancy. On day one we along with a couple of hundred others gathered in the Star Theatre to hear from her about our forthcoming cruise. Much was mentioned about their focus on art, lectures, etc but then Heather said she would now like to sign an aria from the opera Carmen. This beautiful voice emerged and people around us were saying, oh, she's lip syncing. But no, turns out Heather is a trained mezzo soprano and has appeared in many operas, including Carmen and Madam Butterfly. Later in the cruise she had her own show with songs from jazz to classical. She finished with a not too shabby rendition of Nessum Dorma. The second followed our 12 hour day trip to Berlin. Six hours on a Soviet era train is no joke (but good fun). When we arrived back at the ship, we could hear this singing and clapping and after we emerged from the customs building we were greeted by about 60 or 70 of the crew lining the pathway cheering and applauding us all the way back on board. Where we were given a glass of champagne. We will be dining out on these memories for a long time to come. It should come as no surprise that we have booked another Viking cruise, Far Eastern Horizons, for next year. Only a 10 hour flight this time! Read Less

The Viking Homelands cruise is an excellent way to visit all the Baltic countries in one trip. Most of the optional free excursions in each city were well done with local tour guides while still allowing free time to explore with the remaining time. The new Jupiter ship was amazing with quite a few dining options and amenities such as a spa, gym, pools, areas to sit and relax. The rooms are well designed maximizing storage space and a pretty large bathroom and shower for a cruise ship. I’m not big on evening entertainment - which was okay, but not important to me, Service for the most part was excellent, an occasional slip-up here and there but nothing major. This is one of those bucket list trips where the combination of a beautiful, well appointed ship and essentially daily visits to a different Baltic country with unpacking or having to arrange transportation made for a trip I will long remember. It's difficult to capture the Ovation experience easily. But, in a word - sublime. There was no request that was too big or too small for them. We cruised as a party of four in Veranda Suite rooms. Our rooms were located aft near to the staircase, which is a lovely location. Highly recommended. Embarkation - this was effortless and enjoyable. We were met at the airport and had an easy ride to the boat. Here, we were welcomed with cocktails and a seamless embarkation process. Stateroom - Extremely spacious for its category. The veranda is a good size and the walk-in closet is welcome. The double basin in the bathroom was welcome too. Toiletries are of a very high standard. Restaurants - Without exception, meals were amazing. In particular, the service at the Restaurant deserves special mention, the formal night is something special and the Air and Ocean restaurant on deck is also excellent. We normally took in breakfast in the Colonnade, but splurging one or two mornings for breakfast in The Restaurant is also a good idea. Bars - Generally very good, although service at the outside bars during sail-aways gets a little slow. The Retreat - A lovely little hidden area on the boat is The Retreat. Worth spending the money if you're looking for a R&R day. Spa & Fitness - Excellent treatments, but the facilities are perhaps a little small. That said, the fitness area never felt crowded. Excursions - We only did excursions in St Petersburg but these were arranged well and the experience was excellent. Entertainment - All shows in the Grand Salon were very good. The live music on deck during sail-away parties was a little short-lived at 30 minutes. The casino is a little small and felt crowded at times. Read Less

We chose this ocean cruise because of the itinerary and our past Viking River Cruise (Amsterdam to Budapest). This cruise was one of the very best travel experiences we have ever had (we have been on some very nice trips). Cruising for twenty two wonderful days with an incredible friendly and helpful crew along with good food and the best entertainment we have had in a very long time. We appreciated the concern for the health and safety of all on board. Everywhere on the ship was always super clean, I never saw a thing that was soiled or out of place. The organization of all the excursions was superb, we always knew where to be and at what time to be there. We never saw a crew member that did not smile and greet us when passing or wherever. What an amazing and beautiful voyage we had, it was very sad feeling when it had to end. However we are going to continue this excellent way of travel, we have booked another journey with Viking for 2021. A great big hug and a thank you to the crew of the Viking Sky. Read Less

Fellow passengers were very friendly and the staff catered to our every need as if we were the only ones on the boat. The tour guides were energetic entertaining and informative. They knew their stuff and enjoyed imparting their wisdom. The ship was immaculate and maintained fastidiously . The same can be said for the buses. The food on the ship was wonderful and without limitation. The coffee was not particularly to my taste but I guess you can’t have everything . I indulged on the steaks of which I truly enjoyed. On final departure we were surprised and delighted by members of the Viking staff walking us through the check in at the Copenhagen airport turning what is sometimes a confusing experience into a pleasant one. Its details like this that want to make sail with Viking again. To be totally honest l have to offer one small criticism - the maps of the ports of call issued by the concierge were pretty useless but we always managed to find a good one in the respective towns. We chose Viking Cruises after watching a programme of there Homelands Cruise. We liked the size of the ship and the interior design. We decided on a 10 night cruise which seemed to be the best option for a first time cruise. The restaurants were excellent, wine and beer included with lunch and dinner. Our cruise was Russia and the Baltic, we thoroughly enjoyed every port especially our two and a half days in St Petersburg, another highlight was Visby on the island of Gotland (very quaint). We had heard great things about Viking Ocean cruises and we had always wanted to see Scandinavia and Northern Europe. The Viking Homelands cruise was our post-retirement celebration and it was well worth it! We saw 8 countries and 11 ports of call over 15 days. We saw historic cities we had always wanted to see such as Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Berlin and Copenhagen and we had three scenic stops in Norway before the cruise ended. The Viking Sea is an amazing vessel that for a small ship had everything and more---great public spaces and sitting areas; excellent and varied dining experiences; well prepared food with some regional specialties added at different times; great entertainment; experts on board to provide enrichment presentations on history, culture, and architecture of the places we were visiting; an outstanding spa including Nordic style hot and cold therapy; and an indoor/outdoor pool as well as an infinity pool looking off the back end of the ship! The staff from the housekeepers to waiters/servers to the officers were all friendly and approachable, always striving to provide excellent service. Many excursion choices at each port of call and both included and optional excursions were well done with excellent English-speaking guides. The stateroom was spacious and well appointed, and with a veranda, which is standard for all staterooms. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and will definitely be looking to go on future Viking ocean and river cruises! It was more expensive than some other cruise lines, but the entire experience was well worth it! Read Less

We had taken a Viking River cruise and loved. I wasn't sure what to expect on there smaller ocean ships. It was and incredible surprise. They offers so much entertainment and the staff was prefect, after several days you were on a first name basis, every staff member spoke English which was very nice, you wanted for absolutely nothing. Port excursions were excellent and well organized. Being 67 I appreciated this is not a cruise line for children nor is it a cruse line for gamblers who spend there day in a casino. Minus kids and gamblers made for a great atmosphere of fun and conversation. We selected this cruise based on the recommendation of friends who had taken it and loved it. We were very happy with our choice. We always wanted to visit the Baltic countries and found the Viking Homelands itinerary to be the best by far in the small luxury cruise category. This was especially true for the ports of call in Denmark and Norway. The optional shore excursion choices in all ports of call were extensive with lots of variety and the ability to get out of cities and into the countryside. While some of the optional excursions were a bit costly, all but one that we selected was worth the cost. This was particularly true of the two day optional tour in St. Petersburg which was fantastic !! Onboard service was outstanding. Our room steward never missed getting our cabin cleaned while we were at breakfast. Room service was always delivered exactly at the time requested. We'd been thinking about a Baltic cruise since we returned from our journey on the Viking Sea's 2016 shakedown cruise from Venice to Istanbul. I am a Peterson so it made good sense to head to my homeland, if only to sail by. In addition, visiting Russia with Viking seemed like a great idea. We arrived a day early in Stockholm to wander the streets of the old city. We flew Lufthansa Premium Economy (worth the price), with an easy change of planes in Munich. We took the speedy train into city center from the Stockholm airport, walking the short distance to the Stockholm Sheraton. The hotel is well located, moderately priced, very, very comfortable, and has a great restaurant. The next morning we wandered the streets of the old city but were a wee bit early for shop opening. We came upon a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop in the old city, of all things. Closed until 11. Rats. We embarked on the Viking Sky the next morning at 11 since we had upgraded to a PS3 Penthouse Jr Suite on the sixth deck - Cabin 6018. Embarkation was a breeze, especially because our one larger than carryon bag had already arrived by Luggage Forward, arranged through Viking. 6018 is a great cabin - plenty of room for a sitting area with couch, two chairs, coffee/champagne table, and dresser with TV. The verandah was very large and comfortable when the wind didn't howl. The bedroom was large and comfortable since the added square footage meant the closet wasn't right next to the bed. Both the bedroom and bath were precisely what we expected. Perfect in all regards. Gretchen, our cabin steward, was quite friendly and very attentive to our needs. Dining was, as one would expect, delightful with great food. The Viking "buffet" is anything but a buffet. When we sailed the Royal Viking Sea ages ago we dressed for dinner, tuxedo included. Since we're Californians, the tux stayed home though I preferred to wear a jacket at dinner, adding a tie when we dined with Captain Toni Fast and Hotel Manager Wendy Gous. Dining room service everywhere was near impeccable. The dining staff was very friendly (cordial) and very attentive. The onboard entertainment was smashing. Cruise Director Beven Hadinsall is an extraordinarily talented man. He was assisted by Brian Rodriguez who has a magnificent voice. The Viking Singers - Maddy, Dan, Becky, and Carl(?) - were excellent and put on a number of great shows. They were backed by the Viking Band. The best evening's entertainment was Dancing under the Stars on the pool deck - nothing short of great fun with lots of dancing. Shore excursions were excellent, particularly the two-day St. Petersburg journey. One should be forewarned that it is a daunting excursion, but well worth the effort. In my view, the combined 20+ hours spent with our guide, Kuzmin Alexander, was nothing short of remarkable. Don't miss the Vasa museum excursion and do make your way to the North Zeeland castles at the end of the cruise. We had been told to check in with the Cruise Consultant. At first it seemed like a visit to the resort time share desk, however, Hamed very quickly demonstrated his added value. Though we were already booked on our first Viking River cruise next year, Hamed helped us book our two remaining European bucket list cruises - the Danube next month and the Western Med next fall, 2020. What made working with Hamed so valuable was his intimate knowledge of the Viking ships. One make think all cabins in a specific category are the same, but think again. He booked us on the Sky in Penthouse Verandah 4010. Why? It is one of the few PV's with the larger double doors/windows. I also think the Cruise Consultant is given far greater flexibility than others you may choose to book with. His pricing was very attractive. Back to the Baltic, our most important insight? Make sure you are in the Explorers' Lounge at 5am as the ship sets sail from Stockholm to the Baltic. It is something you won't experience anywhere else. Read Less

Just seeing how other cultures live will open your eyes.Viking does cruising the best! Always attentive and best value for the money. No hassle vacation. Everything included, you just have to show up. Food is amazing, great quality and variety. Staff are great and go above and beyond. Ship is comfortable with plenty to do. You won't be bored. Entertainment is professional quality. One performance received a standing ovation! Staff said this was a first for them but it was well deserved. You get front of the line to every side trip. We never waited. VIKING's passenger capacity is lower than the big ships which I like as you get to know the crew and make friends. You are catered to. You have to try Viking, either a river cruise or ocean cruise. You won't be disappointed, promise! Can't wait to go again! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we always enjoyed Viking River cruises. The ship's layout and rooms were very nice. It was very easy to get arround the ship. There were multiple restruants and they were varied enough to allow you to schedule your meals around you activities. The food were excellent. The land tours were informative and well organized. We missed two ports due to weather issues which was disappointing. Service was excellent and all crew were happy and smiled when you addressed them. Land excursions were led by well informed guides who could answer every question put to them. They adjusted the pace of the tour to keep the group together and stopped as necessary to allow the questions to be answered in detail. Entertainment was minimal and could be improved. The shows and pre-tour discussions that we attended were good. This was an adult cruise with few if any children. Embarkation and disembarkation process were well organized and went smoothly.
