I wanted to give Princess one more try, and I wanted to get out of town in January. The ship (I was told) is about to be sold to a different cruise line so that was the reason they have not done any major upkeep on it. The seats in the theater were frayed and did not sit properly. Some seats made you feel like you were about to slide off because they did not fully stay in the upright position. The bathrooms in the cabins need to be updated and the balcony cabin I had was smaller than I had expected. There was barely enough room on the balcony to put 2 small chairs and a small table. The entertainment was not the quality I have come to expect from other cruise lines and as the cruise progressed the food seemed to lose quality until at the end instead of fresh pineapple on the buffet it looked like a can of Dole pineapple slices. The crew was very nice and helpful and the specialty restaurants were very good. On future cruises they plan to include internet, beverage packages and so on to passengers but of course not on this one. Read Less

Profit enhancement appears to have won out over service and conveniences. After about 20 cruises: with Princess, still cannot get a table for 2 without getting in line to complain. Did they think I was not serious when I request 2-seating every time for more than a dozen cruises? Yes, I mean it, every time. If they cannot honor their request without a dustup every time, at the beginning of the cruise, they should not bother asking. the 10th deck cannot get cool enough. specially at night, the room would not cool down. pre-purchased gifts are not delivered to the room, you have to go get them. so forget about surprising your wife with a box of candy. we like coffee cards. except now, you do not know how many drinks you have left and you cannot any longer carry the unused drinks to the next cruise. desserts are sequestered from reach, you have to ask for them. so the joy of loading up your plate with treats to sample cannot be, not without the inquisitive scornful eye of staff. I do not mind the kids running around all over. but who gave them noise makers? all in all very relaxing pilgrimage we make to the islands about every year end. these are relatively minor complaints. not eating in the dining room is no big deal, and after all, the food there is not so good anyway. basically a cattle call. sabatinis and crown grill the places to go. the food is nice and fresh in the buffet and it is quiet and less crowded. they say about eating places, follow the locals. on board where does staff eat? i saw the captain at the horizon grill. 14th deck. Smart choice. we missed kauai due to weather. that is fine. it happens. you need patience and tolerance when in uncertain conditions. I do this cruise every year. And will again. By the way, princess bedding is terrific, and the tv's are large and have a good variety of programming. all good there. Read Less

The cruise was a good value overall but the experience goes downhill when they start to charge $1.50 for a milkshake, spin-class charges, ice cream is given out like it was gold. Ticky tack charges. Carnival has unlimited ice cream and Guy’s burgers on Carnival which is the best. My daughter did not like the heavy sauced foods at seated dinning so I ask for a steak which is standard on Carnival for sit down dinner. When I asked the waiter he gave me a menu with a $25 up charge. Carnival is Supposed to be the lesser ship but in my family’s opinion carnival is the better ship. More stuff to do for kids, better live shows at night and just all-around more fun. All the shows were smutty knowing that children were on board during Christmas vacation. Every show had some sort of innuendo about sex and other non-kid friendly stuff. Crew was great as in all the cruises I have ever been on. The first night we didn’t get to our seated dinner till 530 so we were a half hour late and was chastised by the waiter that we should be there at 5 o’clock but I did not get my bags until 515. Pizza and hotdogs for junkies is the best but all other food is no better than any other cruise line I have been on. We were not able to get off the boat for Kauai because of bad weather. They gave us a apology from the captain and were given $8 per person back. Cheap cheap, you would think they might give something more than $8 port fee returned and a apology. Free photo, drinks, etc.. So hold on to your wallet because Princess will try to pick it! Also stains all over my carpet and the boat looks tired. In between ports the smell of paint as the crew was painting the boat to hide the rust. I would rather have a clean carpet. Read Less

My first Review. Let me start off by saying we have cruised for more than 180 days so not newbies. We were at the point where we were ready to stop Cruising. Staff and Ships were always good, just tired of Companies themselves. Food was good, always is. Not perfect but with 3500 people on a Ship all eating within 3 hours very good.A big shout out to George and Cezar our waiters in Portafinos, always looking out for us. The Shows and Entertainment were fun, Ships Singers and Dancers always putting on a great show. Not everything was my cup of Tea but others matter as well. Life is not always about me. We generally get an Inside. The Cabin layout was great. You can walk around the bed when set-up as a King, not so on a lot of lines. The Bathroom is also seperated from the room by the closet, so at night you don't flood the room with light (we normally use a tap light). Our steward always had our room made up even if we only left for a short time. Tiki Dave's Ukelele lessons were a blast, he brought about 70 for loaners. All staff were friendly and always smiling. Be that Person that says "You are doing a great job Thank You" the Genuine smiles say it all. I had the opportunity to meet so many great people, and am feeling Blessed. Ignore the Negative, Embrace the Positive. I you go hoping to have a great time you will. The Ship is in great shape. We have been to Hawaii before and Rented Cars at each Island. Prices were down on average $30 a day for larger vehicles(6 person). We invited our tablemates to join us and they did. We are in our late 50's they were 70's and 80's and a good time was had by all. Embrace Life. Have Fun. Laugh. Thank You Princess for helping me remember why we Cruise. Read Less

I have very few complaints and even those are minor. This cruise had something for all age groups, although clearly, the vast majority of the passengers were elderly. Daniel Oliver, the nighttime singer in the Crooner's Bar is an outstanding talent, both as a pianist and a vocalist. It was a 15-day cruise but the variety of entertainments, classes and lectures about Hawaii, dance lessons, cooking lessons, you name it was absolutely great. Tomas, our stateroom steward was a jewel. The MaitreD in the Club Class dining was exceptional. The embarking and disembarking process was the smoothest I've ever had. I have a few areas for improvement. In the casino, there were only 2 Buffalo Gold slot machines and the wait to use those was ridiculous. It's a popular game, they need more. The hamburgers were never hot. They were warm or room temperature. The cheese didn't even melt. I went to a lecture entitled future cruses expecting hear about exciting destinations, and instead it was a presentation on interpreting your cruise card and what to expect on a cruise. The lectures on Hawaii were great, educational, and poignant. A note of warning: The excursions fill up quickly! Don't procrastinate if there's something you want to do or it will be full. Last, I want to commend the captain. A passenger became critically ill during this voyage. We were 2 days out of Hawaii. The captain made an announcement that be was advised that the situation was critical and he was speeding with all haste to get to our next port. He apologized, but said the ride was going to be rocky. It was. We rocked, rolled, and lurched about the ship for two days. However, he got us to Ensenada 12 hours earlier than scheduled to try and save this passenger's life. Ambulances were waiting when we docked. I was very impressed with how they responded to this emergency. Finally, the food was outstanding with the exception noted above. Read Less

We traveled with 4 other couples on this 15 day cruise to Hawaii. Our group is from Central Florida and we love life and enjoy having new experiences. Our group enjoys fitness activities, dancing , entertainment, eating and we play board games. My wife and I have been on over 12 Princess cruises and we recommended the other couples try a Princess cruise. We had direct flights from Orlando to LAX and it was a joy to see the Princess Cruise representatives at the baggage claim area. The construction at the airport made the transfer to the terminal a little longer than we thought but we were happy with the care free transfer process. The cruise registration and boarding the ship was also smooth and seamless. The people on the ship were older but we found many like minded passengers. Our group loves fitness programs. Only a few classes were available but they were excellent. Adam taught a dance fitness class at 9:00 am each sea day. It was 40 minutes of great exercise. He is part of the dance company on ship and had tremendous energy and enthusiasm He has a standing invitation to come join us in Florida. Some of us used the fitness center for working out and stretching. Most cruises have an early morning stretch class and an abs class but this cruise lacked any free classes from the fitness professionals. We enjoyed the Tai Chi and Line Dancing classes.I am a Zumba instructor most of our group are in my Zumba class. Later in the cruise we discovered DJ Loverly. (She was great) She played music on deck 14 by the pool by request so we requested a few songs we use in our classes. The first day we had about 20 people join us, the second day we go to about 40 people. On the final day she had me lead a full class. We had about 100 people dancing on deck 14 and 15. Even the bartenders and the cooks at the hamburger and pizza stands were dancing! Molly led us in a Flash Mob and it was great fun! We loved the entertainment and the staff. Oz a good friend after we met him at karaoke on Day 1. Micah, the cruise director from Australia was a joy. We sat in the front row for all the shows and we gave the entertainers and Micah lots of love. We LOVED the entertainment! The singers and dance crew had 3 unique shows and they were spectacular. The comedians, the singers, instrumentalists and magicians were wonderful. Pinnacle was an awesome band. We also became familiar with Matt Thompson - the director of entertainment. He and Micah helped us solve a problem we had with our room later in the cruise when it would have been easier for him to just walk away from the problem. Matt, Micah and OZ all lead by example and are committed to making sure you have an outstanding cruise experience. The educational sessions on the geology of the earth, volcanoes formation and types of volcanoes along with the evolution of plants and wildlife in and around the islands was very enjoyable, I highly recommend all the lectures - even if you are sweaty from the dance fitness class. The food on board was as expected. We enjoyed Sabatinis. We enjoyed the milk and cookies later in the afternoon on Deck 14 while we played our board games . All of us loved the fruit and the option to eat healthy. The staff at the international cafe helped me with my coffee each morning and they were wonderful. We enjoyed the food and only one of us gained more than 5 lbs. We enjoyed the ports in Hawaii. Some people in our group took the cruise tours and some of us rented cars and toured on our own. The Hawaiian excursions were rather expensive so I opted for touring on our own. We had a great trips on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii. We used the cruise tour excursion on Oahu. We were pleased with the visit to Pearl Harbor and the Island tour. We stayed in a mini suite and we noticed that the room was more worn and tattered than we had hoped for. The bathroom tub drain did not drain very well and our cabin steward did a great job of getting it taken care of. Later in the cruise we had an additional problem. We were able to rectify the problem by working through our cabin steward and getting the help of Matt Thompson and Micah. We were moved to a different room and the situation was resolved thanks to the help of Matt and Micah. Disembarkation was also smooth and we made it home late in the evening. We were tired but very satisfied with our cruise and we would cruise on Princess again Read Less

Hula and ukulele lessons with guest show afterwards was awesome. Pop choir fun too! Veronica taught dance classes and fun in the Atrium, Piazza area was great. Captain Tuvo greeted us daily in the dining venues. Food and service in Capri was outstanding. Fish always cooked to perfection. International Cafe has great snacks and designer coffees. Met lots of experienced and first-time cruisers. Loved Nano Prado in Crooners. Cameron was cool too with his guitar. Meet and Mingle was lame, too cliquey. Danced nightly and entertainment was good. 4th trip across Pacific to Hawaii. If you don’t enjoy sea days, don’t take it. Do Noweigian’s Pride of America instead. ATV’s in Ensenada with wine tasting was best excursion ever! A few rocky nights, but that’s okay. Casino paid off! Great trip! Read Less

The very best part of the entire cruise was the staff. To a person, each of them was helpful, smiling all the time, and very courteous. The 15 day round trip cruise was very restful and relaxing. The food was about as good as it can be, my wife and I have been on 5 cruises and that was as good as any. We chose anytime dining for the first time and loved it. We sat with different couples each night and loved them all. I am disabled and must stay in my chair all the time. This is where the Star Princess fails a bit. The ADA room has a balcony (that we paid extra for of course) and the lip out to the balcony was 5" high. I was unable to roll out, so I never got to enjoy the fresh air at all. The Princess Theater is large and wonderful, unless you need to sit in a wheelchair. They have exactly 4 spaces per side. We must have had 40 wheelchair users on the cruise. We ended up going over an hour early to each show just to have an area to see from. This is a much older ship and was not accessible for me to enjoy the Sanctuary deck at all. There is no elevator to that section, only stairs. Getting on and off the ship in Hawaii was embarrassing, debilitating and difficult at best. The ramps are very short which makes them steep. They have ridged slats to keep the foot passengers from slipping but it makes it WRONG for wheelchairs. This was the only area where the staff was short, pushy and not good at their jobs. They put someone in front and someone in back and pretty much shove you up and down the whole time yelling; and they do it all wrong but will not listen to the person who does it daily, me. The excursions were fantastic and every bus we used (ROBERTS TRAVEL) had a lift for disabled persons. The locations and themes were perfect sights for Hawaii and we booked separately with Roberts because Princess was sold out 8 months prior to the cruise. Booking the excursions separately saved us almost half the cost and Roberts is the same company the cruise line uses. The entertainment in the Theater was over the top. Their dancers and singers are 1st class and worth seeing every show. The behind the scenes staff (sound, lights and such) were professional and managed well. Theater has the best people on the ship. Other than the main restaurants I have to tip my hat to the Trident Grill. It is simple such as hamburgers, dogs and daily specials but he meat is well seasoned and is grilled to order. Great job! The buffet is what a buffet should be - tons of food. This is one of the places that the staff was over the top. Every time I rolled into line someone would be there to see if they could carry my tray or assist in any way. The area was wide enough for me to roll through and not hit anyone. That's a bit rare from many of my past cruises. Overall, I would do it again - even on this same ship. The staff and relaxation makes it all worth it. Read Less

This was the 10th anniversary since we took our first Princess Hawaii cruise in 2008. Overall we feel the cruise 10 years ago was superior with regard to entertainment in the Princess Theater and Vista Lounge on board the ship and with an extra port offered on the main island Hawaii, Kona. The ship itself, the Star Princess, is an older ship and shows the wear and tear of its years. The air conditioning system struggles at night to provide adequate cooling in the stateroom on deck 12, or the ship turns it down. We had the same air conditioning problems on this ship on a Mexican Riviera cruise we took with Princess. The overall grade on the entertainment offered on this cruise I would rate as a C- , far below the normal standard we were used to on Princess. The biggest disappointment was the Princess staff production shows. They did 4 shows on the 15 day cruise and the productions lefts much to be desired. The singers and the dancers were sufficient to have a better show but the content was lacking. The elimination of Kona as a port call left only a 4 day island stop schedule in Hawaii. That extra day definitely changed the cruise for us. After 4 days at sea to get there, and facing a 5 day at sea return, spending 5 days on the island instead of 4 would have been more appealing. One big positive was the service staff on board the ship were excellent. Very accommodating. Read Less

Chose the cruise for cost. You get what you pay for. Food was average at best. On the lido buffet, there was too much concern about presentation rather than on food quality. I am not that picky of an eater but I can’t say I really enjoyed the food. As an example, the steak referred to as Sirloin was the worst I’ve ever had and appeared to more than likely actually be chuck. It was so full of grizzle that most times I chose not to eat it. My biggest complaint was the fitness center. Didn’t open until 7:00 am. There was a waiting line of about 20 to 25 people every day. There were not near enough machines for the demand. Only 2 recumbent bikes and 5 or 6 are needed. The 6 ellipticals were always broken down and the staff was slow to fix—out of 6 machines, only 4 were normally available. The earbud port on 1 of the 2 elliptical machine was plugged up. Several people reported it but the staff seemed unconcerned. The weight training machines were not being used yet the waiting line for cardio machines was apparent. Read Less

We were in the middle of January, it was a typical Canadian winter day. That night we stumbled upon the old Elvis Presley "Blue Hawaii" playing on TV. Next morning, both of us had the same idea; to book a Princess Cruise to Hawaii. We were on the Star Princess, for 2 weeks, last summer, B2B between Vancouver BC and Whitier, Alaska. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, the ship and especially the staff. Again, on this cruise, our feelings for the ship, the itinerary and the Staff, several of whom had not changed. It was like a reunion at the front desk, the boutiques and the Dining room. Room Stewards are consistently superb. The ship itself underwent a significant refit, in December, which also involved upgrading beds (great), larger TV's much of the carpeting which is still being refreshed as an ongoing maintenance item. The ship looks very good, although the grey-tones carpet chosen for the Horizon cafe would not be our choice. The cruise, itself was fantastic. The US Coast Guard boarded the ship on the morning of Embarkation (reason still unknown) which caused a 3 hour delay in starting the embarkation, but the ship still sailed, on time. They do these periodically and are a surprise to all, but the Princess crew seemed to take it all in stride. Shortly after departure, a Medical Emergency caused us to stop in mid channel, while a fire boat came alongside to remove an ailing passenger. On the first SeaDay we started to weather the heavy rain storm that was approaching the LA area, so the first 2 sea days were quite rough, but after that everything calmed down and the rest of the voyage went extremely well. We had a day of drizzle and rain in Hilo, bit that only impacted a few higher level shore excursions. Oahu, Kauii and Lahaina were perfect days for , tours, helicopters and Whale watching. Great tours!!! Highly recommend the North Shore Oahu bus tour, Kauii Helicopter and Lahaina Whale Watching shore excursions. Hop-on Hop-off bus in Hilo was good for the wet weather we had. After 4 days in Hawaii, it was time to sail home on calm waters all the way to Ensenada and LA. Food aboard was wonderful, as we have come to expect on our previous 9 Princess Cruises. Perhaps the demographics of the passengers was different, but we have never seen so many people using the Dining Rooms for Breakfast and Lunch, but the staff handled it as if it was no different. Well Done, folks. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted a relaxing experience. We had been to Hawaii many times so port excursions were not that important although we took some. Well, if you are going to be at sea for 10 days, you are going to want some good entertainment. WRONG! Not on this cruise. If I knew how bad the entertainment was going to be, I would never have booked. The theatre. It's way too small for the number of people on the ship/ The seats are worn and they seem tilted forward for some reason. The show times do not work with the dinner times although we were Club Class (more on that later) and could dine early. I think any high school could have put on a better show. We got to see Ric Steel which I think was the best of the lot. The show was only about 40 minutes and just average. He spent the last five minutes telling us about his medical struggles and pushing a book he wrote about it. One night they had Tiki Dave doing a Juke Box show. My kind of music. He was not very good at it however and should have stayed in the lounges where he usually was. The entertainment went downhill from there. We just stayed in our cabin after dinner and watched TV and movies on our tablet. There were some good solo performers in the Piazza of the ship but very few seats. I'm sorry Princess but seniors should not have to stand up to watch a lounge act! There was one good daytime lecturer Ron Bowers who had worked as a D.A in L.A. Embarkation was like a cattle drive even though we had priority embarkation. Many small screw ups at the start of our cruise evidenced by the very long lines at the service desk. The elevators were small and too slow. Our cabin was a Club Class Mini Suite which meant it was mid ship. It was clean but there were signs of wear like peeling wallpaper and some broken caulking on the tub. The couch was also worn out and not comfortable. One of the drawers was broken. The room just had a dated look to it. WE had paid extra for Club Class dining. As far as I'm concerned, it was nothing more than what we should have had in the main dining room. The club class dining was nothing more than a section of the Portofino dining room sectioned off. There were more wait staff but no special menu as advertised. Except for an occasional desert special or pasta dish, the menu was exactly the same as the main dining room. It was much quitter than the main area which sounded unbearably loud in the distance.. One thing on the menu that really bothered me. At the bottom of the page you are offered prime rib, filet mignon and steak but it cost $19 dollars more per person. HEY, We're in Club Class and you are still trying to stick it to us? We can go to Crown Grill for $10 more and have a premium choice of steaks and chops. One positive note. The wait staff in Club Class was exemplary in particular Joshua, Alexandra and Hestor who knocked themselves out to make our dining a wonderful experience. We like to shop on a cruise ship but it seemed like their main interest was to sell jewelery and expensive art work. They even had a Good Feet representative. Give me a break! The cruise director was always yelling. Her voice was not suited for the job and we found her annoying whenever she spoke. To sum up. This cruise fell below our expectations. If you never cruised before you probably would have been pleased. It seems like the bottom line greatly exceeds the desire to please passengers. It's nickel and dime and cut wherever you can. Whats next, charging for luggage like the airlines? Read Less

Overall, this was a very pleasant cruise. We enjoyed the days at seas as well as the port visits. I would have liked more time in Hilo, Hawaii. We finally quit going to the main dining room after three rude and clumsy encounters with the wait staff helpers. The last incident was the worst with the waiter's helper dumping a full glass of wine in my half-eaten meal, splashing gravy and wine all over my formal clothes and face. It was on our 40th anniversary celebration. We cut short our meal and left the dining room. After I got cleaned up, we went to Vines for tapas and wine. But, this was the last straw after two other surreal incidents - waiter helper slamming our food down in front of us in an angry huff (nothing we had done, since it was the first time we had seen her on the floor) and another awkward moment with food service that the head waiter explained as first night jitters. Probably the worst wait service we have experienced on a Princess cruise. Not a huge problem, since Princess provides a lot of other options for dining, but disappointing because on our previous cruises the dining room experience was always one of the highlights of our vacation. The Itinerary was really wonderful. We loved the port visits. Chose two excursions and the rest we did on our own. Really enjoyed the excursion at Hilo, Hawaii and Ensenada, Mexico. The entertainment was varied enough to allow everyone do anything they wanted to do and be able to find a seat. The food was excellent, though towards the end of the cruise it seemed that the food at the Horizon Court was the same every day. Was it? I personally did not care for the fellow at the guest services desk because of his arrogance towards guests. Clearly he has a disdain for cruise customers, even those with minimal problems or questions. We hated to have to visit there for information because of his attitude. The International Cafe was surprisingly good. Lots of variety - not the same thing every day. The staff there was terrific, friendly and accommodating. The baristas were hit and miss - some great, some mediocre and argumentative. The Vines staff was wonderful, friendly, remembered our names, engaged in friendly banter. Clearly some of the best trained wait staff. We loved the naturalist and Tiki Dave and his wife are energetic, hard workers and seem to love being with the cruise guests - so friendly, knowledgeable, fun and approachable. Our room was a last minute purchase. I asked the Princess agent to chose a nice interior room for us, as I had never booked an interior room before and there were no other rooms left when we called. He assigned us to a room with two bunk beds that were folded up on the wall. We spent the first 3 nights banging our heads on the bunks when we got up to use the bathroom. Next time I will ask about the accommodations and not trust a Princess travel agent to choose a room for us. But, on a positive note, the room was dark and quiet at night and we slept well, in spite of the bruises on our foreheads. I wish the stewards would knock on the door before entering. Sometimes we forgot to put the privacy sign out and were surprised by our steward entering our room unexpectedly. Overall, Princess fits us - more laid back and focused on educational and intellectual entertainment as well as fine dining. I will certainly cruise with Princess again. As a bonus, the other cruise passengers did not try to beat us up so we are thankful for that. Everyone was quite civilized and pleasant, making for an enjoyable cruise. Read Less

I found this cruise to be a study in economy, while presenting itself as a premium cruise, in actuality it was very frugal and did not provide the passenger with the quality of food one would expect, nor the environment one has experienced in the past--overcrowding. The entertainment was good to excellent; the ship did not have the capacity to seat people in the auditorium. If I wanted to see a show after dinner I would have to be in the auditorium 45 minutes to one hour before the show. Every seat in the auditorium was taken and people had to stand and watch. In addition many of the seats were broken and the seats slanted forward. Additionally, they have the Piazza, where to see any event there was only standing room with a few seats. People would be standing two and three deep. There were just too many people for the venues; the ship appeared to be overcrowded. In addition there were few quiet spaces to read or just relax. I had issues with the food. Every piece of food seemed to be weighed and measured. For instance, an item such as butter was counted out. If there was six people at the table there were six pieces of butter. If you wanted more you had to ask. Servings were generally small and items featured seem to be lesser cost items such as "Pork or Meatloaf." In conclusion while the ship was overcrowded, it also appeared the ship itself was tired looking, even though it had just came out of dry dock.. In my cabin the couch was just worn out. Other areas of the ship needed help. The one positive item is that the employees seemed well trained and tried to be as helpful as possible. They seemed to have a positive attitude. I did have one problem in my cabin and they came to do the repair within fifteen minutes of my call. Read Less

Nothing to put in an excellent category. Although the ship was just out of dry dock, it still shows its age. Disembarking was a total mess. We were due to disembark at 7:45 due to an early flight. They had people entering and leaving through the same set of doors and weren't allowed to disembark until after 8:15. Princess@Sea app was a waist of time. Same information was available in their daily newsletter. WIFI for it was spotty. Elderly people on scooters and walkers tied up elevators and walkways. I was disappointed in the weather, but nothing could have prevented that. 12 days were overcast or rainy, and 3 days had some sunshine. The ports of call were very nice and the excursions were worth the money. Visiting Pearl Harbor and the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial is a must see excursion. Volcano National Park in Hilo was also worth the trip. Read Less

This is our second 15 day trip to Hawaii on Princess and I must say that the first on 10 years ago outshines this by far in the food area! Not sure what happened here, but everything in this area was sub standard this time around. The crew was phenomenal as usual, not much to add here. They do their very best to make sure you are have what you need/want at all times. Our cabin staff was amazing as usual, and having just come from dry dock, the beds and linens were very nice. I felt that the time on the ship at sea days stretched out to very long days of everyone on board trying to sell us something at every turn. It got wearing at times, gone are the days of the group activities and contest that they used to have on board. If you want to pay for activities and stand in line to hopefully get a ticket to participate, oh and then if they have enough supplies when it is your turn, yeah it is like that. So, not impressed at all, and will not be taking this cruise again ever. We will continue to fly over to the islands and enjoy our time there. One last item that we feel is important to mention, this is a very geriatric set of cruisers. After talking with several crew members this is like this day in and day out. There were several medical emergencies on board, and we even had to turn the ship around on the first evening to have an emergency evacuation of a cruiser. So if you do not have the patience to deal with very slow moving, sometime crabby, older people-this is not the cruise for you. The embarkation and disembarkation was the easiest we have ever had on any cruise we have been on in the last 15 years. Goodbye for now Princess, we will be trying other cruise lines that offer more exciting daily activities as well as newer food options. Read Less

With retirement nearing, we (my wife and I) choose this cruise to better understand the experience of 4 or 5 sea days in a row (we are considering some extended cruises in the future), as well as the experience of travelling with a group with a signficant amount of retirees. We have previously spent some time in the Islands (via air), so site seeing was not our main priority. Princess has been our choice for cruising for some time, and this trip did not disappoint. The service, food and entertainment were a good value for the money. In fact, we found the entertainment to be noticeably more appealing than on some of our recent Princess cruises. Our one quibble was that each photograph now costs $25.00 each- which seemed high to us. The ship was newly refurbished and we appreciated the enhancements- both in the cabin and around the ship. Some of the little touches, such as a place beside your bed to charge your iPhone, showed us that Princess really cares about staying competitive. (Note: I do own CCL common stock, and have so for many years). As mentioned earlier, sightseeing was not our primatry objective, but we did take Princess tours on the big island and the garden island. We did attend the onboard lectures by Sharon, which were very informative, and very well done. Read Less

Hawaii cruise We have sailed many times before and so wanted to go to Hawaii We now live in Costa Blanca Spain and travelled Via Las Vegas for the new year so there were many filghts and days involved to reach our enbarcation point at San Pedros' Pier Los Angeles. We are now Platinum level with Princess cruises with the appropriate badges but we failed to recieve correct instructions to board the ship and had to trail around making further inquiries in order to get aboard quickly. Once aboard we found our stateroom and soon after one of our cases and one other with our name on but was not ours we informed the cabin attendant who removed the wrongly place case and thought that our case would soon arrive after several hours waiting for it I had to go to the reception deck to inquire about it. My suitcase, properly named and tagged was in a large pile of other suitcases going nowhere it would seem that you would have to go,as i did, to collect your own. Aged 77, and having travelled halfway around the world, the last thing you want to do is drag your suitcase around a very large ship whilst all the time thinking is this what you get in the Platinum grade Do it yourself ! On arriving in our stateroom we were surprised not to find a Princess Patter which tell you what's on and where to go, when I inquired I was told it was on an app no mention of this in the cabin or elsewhere, also there was not a small diagram of the ship deck layout and which had been handed out on prevoius Princess ships so again I had to go and ask. Princess do not now give receipts for drinks purchases and therefore no signing occurs I was waiting for my final bill statement to arrive on our last night in order to check it, this did not happen, no statement given, out so you do not know what you are being charged for. On my arrival back home I have made inquiries about my bill and as yet have not received an answer. Please be aware of this fact on your last night and print your bill as nobody will tell you and you will get no response to your enquiries. We enjoyed the ship, entertainment, and the cruise but booked shore excursions with other agents as we now find they are better value for money. This was the first time that we have had such a troublesome boarding and no final account on any previous cruise ship. We have sailed on the Regal Princess and everything was just wonderful so we will be using Princess cruises again and hoping for better things. Read Less

We went to Hawaii on the Star Princess & had the best time! They do Hawaiian cultural crafts, hula & ukelele classes. The captain was amazing! He visited the passengers daily shaking hands, doing crafts & even went on a few excursions! Best captain ever & the crew loved him! Snorkeling was pretty good as well! The food was exquisite & just wonderful! Entertainment was great with Tiki dave & Leialoha! Even got to practice hula in atrium in evenings with Leialoha! They are amazing!!! We are doing this same cruise in 2019 with family again! If you want a rental car in Maui, reserve one in advance or you won't be able to get one! They're really limited on rentals.. The Banyun Tree in Maui is amazing! There was one snorkeling tour that was more about sightseeing than snorkeling from Princess that was a waste! We complained but they didn't care! It was very disappointing to us as we love to snorkel! Will do some off Princess snorkeling tours next time instead.... Very disappointed about that!!! Read Less

We picked this 15 day cruise because it was the same price as the 7 day cruise around the Hawaiian Islands leaving out of Honolulu. We flew in to LAX a day early and stayed at the Crown Plaza next to the harbor. Great location within walking distance of the ship and also the USS Iowa which we toured that afternoon. Nice area by the port as they have a very nice wide walking path along the harbor. Very easy walk to the ship with our luggage. Embarkation was a breeze and walk off disembarkation was even easier with no wait. We thought the ship was very nice. We liked the layout of our inside room with plenty of storage. One of the nicer rooms that we have had. The highlight for me was the steam room in the men's locker room. Most of the steam rooms in the ships aren't hot enough but this one was perfect and I had a nice steam every afternoon before dinner. We really liked the 5:15 dinner seating. It seems like everyone wants early seating and this was the earliest we have ever eaten on a cruise. It would be fine with us if they would move it up to 5. We thought the food in the Horizon Buffet and dining room were excellent. We have never been able to understand how anyone can be dissatisfied with the food. A person would have to be very picky or super spoiled to not find food that they enjoy. This was our first time on Princess and we liked a lot of the things they did. They seemed to have more people working in the buffet getting drinks and clearing off dirty plates. I like it that they have servers serving the ice cream instead of having a serve yourself ice cream machine that people abuse. We enjoyed some good movies in the Princess Theater. We thought the crew in the Horizon Buffet were very friendly, especially Zelda and Ferdinand at breakfast. It never felt crowded at the buffet but we avoided peak times. The captain was very visible and friendly and I think this rubbed off on all the crew. This was our 17th cruise and this one flew by. The entertainment was excellent. The Asst. LA DA (retired) gave a lecture on one of the top ten LA cases (Bobby Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Onion Fields, DNA, OJ, Natalie Wood, Menendez Brothers, etc. each morning at sea which ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. They have a BOGO (buy one get one for $1) happy hour every afternoon. We don't usually drink even at home but this motivated us to have a fancy drink each afternoon and was something we really looked forward to. Lectures in the morning, BOGO and steam in the spa in the afternoon, the great entertainment in the evening, incorporating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and our days flew by. Only had time to read one of the 5 books I brought to read. Rented a car at Hilo. I would recommend taking a taxi to rental. Didn't cost that much and we were first in line. Those that used the free shuttle had to wait in line for a long time. We drove to Volcano National Park which is a must see and one of the highlights. Also rented a car at Kaui and went to the valley saw part of it but as we got higher we were in the clouds and didn't see much. What we did see was stunning. Just walked around in Maui. In Honolulu we took Uber to Pearl Harbor and beat the rush. We had some great Uber drivers. Read Less

It was a rough sail out of LA but sea days after were filled with lots of activities, great lectures and delicious food. We did not do tours but walked on islands however weather was cool and rainy. Still.... a very enjoyable cruise for us. We flew into SNA, took Uber to Best Western plus in San Pedro. Very accommodating and within walking distance to drugstores and restaurants with a free shuttle to ship! The Skywalkers Lounge was our favorite spot to relax and have a fantastic view from the back of the ship. Unfortunately we hear that it will be removed in the near future so take your cruise now and enjoy. Also skywalkers and explorer lounge have happy hours at various times which means buy one get one for $1.00. Can't go wrong there! We visited the "Sanctuary" twice, but believe it would be a better choice on a "warm weather" cruise. And always check with cruise critic before taking any cruise! Read Less

we choose this cruise because of the itinerary. not many options to sail from use to hawaii. we have sailed with princess before and were happy with it. ship needs refurbishing but service was very good especially captain. he was very visible all the time. would not go again. 9 days at sea is too much and i prefer a hot holiday. very cold at sea. embarkation was very long but the disembarkation went smoothly. dining room staff were very good. the head waiter was there every night not just on the last night for the tips. they need more sitting areas around the centre area to watch entertainment before going to dine shore excursions are very pricey so we did our own with other companies prices on the ships seem to get higher and they seem to be charging more for any extras the shops say duty free but the prices are about 1 1/2 times more than what you would pay at home for the same item. however i do like the fact that they had laundromat on site.
