Windstar has only 6 ships so and they are small ships focused on going to areas the bigger ships cannot get to. While the ship itself is a little dated, it is slated for a big makeover this summer which is explained here: https://www.windstarcruises.com/starplus/. The cabins are suites with a sofa, chairs, a desk, a full bathtub and a walk-in closet – plenty of room for the 2 of us. There is a spa which we did not use and a decent fitness room, which I admit, I intended to use, but did not. I had too much fun doing the excursions. The best part about Windstar is the service. All the staff are friendly and really try to make the passengers have a good experience. There was a challenge with the first port so as we were boarding we learned we would not be going to an island off Puerto Rico but to St. Thomas instead. We were given new excursions to pick from. The last two days we were feeling the effects of a storm, so we couldn’t tender to Virgin Gorda. I was extremely bummed as I wanted to go back to The Baths, but the captain and team rallied and took us to Tortola where they quickly assembled 2 excursions for us. The food is decent. You have 3 choices for dinner – either the big dining room, the area where you have breakfast & lunch that they convert to a ‘romantic dining experience’ or room service. We did all 3 options. Yes, we got a little bored with the food selections but at least we didn’t overeat too much. We also bought the Package which included a full liquor selection, WiFi and Laundry Service. If you are looking for nightlife, this is NOT the ship for you. On our ship, they had 2 different 2-person bands playing during sunset and after dinner and I saw they had a small casino set up at night but we never went to see it. There was a show put on by the crew Thursday evening but we skipped it. Also, the only child we saw was the captain’s daughter. Read Less

Just got off the wind star legend....wow...good thing they are taking this ship into reparations... It has seen better days... No thermostats work in the suites, 1 ply toilet tissue, main dining room a/c stuck on coldest setting, so low , a large % of passengers got a cold in the first 3 days and passed it around for a week. Outdoor seating on upper deck fine dining area had incredibly uncomfortable chairs, the skinny legs of the cheap seating kept getting stuck in the grates of the floor tipping them sideways. The 'Candles' experience was 'filled" with reservations and when you got one ,you noticed very few people there because they were so understaffed... Fillet mignonette was precut to 6 ounces , served medium to medium well no matter what you requested. Service was spotty, some nights good, some you had to ask for water. Servers would often approach table interrupting guests in middle of a sentence.. Dining hours reflected the understaffing, very limited hours it became necessary to plan around so as not to run out of certain selections. Wanted a smaller, less crowded ship, as we are not fans of the 3000 person ships. This had an itinerary that was heavy in ports with many overnight stays in bigger cities. We do not prefer so many "at sea" days. The smaller ship has less amenities, so "at sea" days are not as enjoyable. This smaller ship was able to dock closer the many of the downtown areas, since it could navigate the rivers to get closer to towns, making exploring independently easier. The staff on this ship was very competent and responsive to all the guest's needs. There were reviews the evening before each port, providing information about that port, as well as promoting the ship's excursions. This information was helpful, although sometimes not totally accurate on dress requirements of temples, etc. The cabins are very spacious, although they are getting somewhat dated. We were told that Windstar is remodeling and expanding their fleet, one ship at a time. We will definitely cruise again on a Windstar ship. Read Less

This is our first sailing on Windstar Cruises - we chose the Star Legen - a 212 passenger vessel previously owned by Seabourne - the renovations are great - all staterooms are oceanview large suites - a few with balconies. These are not typical balconies - the door slides open and lead to a French Balcoony - we loved it - you are seated on comfortable chairs and a sofa - (not plastic or rattan outdoor furniture) but have access to the outdoors - much like the Panorama Suites on Avalon River Cruises. The ship is very easy to get acclimated to - 3 floors of suites - 2 outdoor decks - an outdoor poo bar - land indoor bar with small casino and an adjacent lounge with dance floor. A theater style showroom with stage used for crew show and short presentation on ports of call. Another area above the bridge has a beautiful view and is tastefully decorated with tables, chairs, sofas, TV's and a small service area that serves coffee, sandwiches, continental breakfast and snacks throughout the day. It seems under utilized especially at night - would be a nice space to have quiet duo or entertainment after dinner. ROOMS All are suites - mostly the same size - 277sq. ft. - either with large windows or French Balconies. Two beds can convert to a King. The seating area with a desk vanity can be separted by drawn curtains if wanted. The sofa, chairs and cocktail table overlook the water. The two armoires are well stocked with 4 types of glasses, ice bucket, minibar with soda and small size liquor bottles (extra charge for alcohol). the small hairdryer is powerful. Only one outlet to charge electronics. There is plenty of space for storage - under the beds, in nightstands, a large walk in closet with shelves, two rods for clothing and a dresser with drawers and a safe large enough for a lap top. The marble bathroom has a tub/shower combo with good water pressure. The Occitaine bath products are large size and towels are changed twice daily. This was the most comfortable room that we have occupied on a cruise ship. STAFF Staff is outstanding - very friendly, helpful and competent. They are casually dressed in navy blue shorts and white shirts - giving a casual feel to the ship. They all address you by name and remember your preferences for drinks. They all work well together - even the officers helping when needed. FOOD and DRINKS Breakfast and lunch feature mostly buffet but omelets and eggs can be ordered at breakfast and lunch features some sandwiches and small meals that are served. The dining area has an outdoor deck that is nice if the temperatures are favorable and the wind not strong. We ate there mostly when in port. Dinner was served with family style vegetables and desserts were very good. Our chef was from India so we did see many Indian type offerings. We don't usually care for the outdoor buffet night - but this one was spectacular.....Lots of freshly cooked to order meats on the grill - roast Pig but best of all .......all you could eat Maine lobster, Shrimp, Crab claws and crab legs. We found drinks to be a bit more expensive that on larger cruise lines. Martinis were in the $12 range, mixed drinks $8.50, wines $9-$12/glass. All in all it was an enjoyable cruise - very heavy with ports of call most every day and being a small ship there was not much choice for entertainment. Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise for the itinerary, which was very interesting: Dublin, Orkney Island, Norwegian fjords, Faroe Islalnds, Reykjavik. Being an old Seaborne ship, the cabin is a suite which was large with a sitting area, walkin closet, large bathroom, and very comfortable. We very much enjoyed the itinerary. The cruise itself was a disappointment. Service was not very good. The food was fair and served cold at times. A language barrier existed between staff and guests and you never knew what might show up at the dinner table. When the ship has to make an announcement over the intercom system, asking guests "to be more patient" at dinner in the dining room because it takes over 2 hours to get a meal, you know there is a problem and many people are complaining. Obviously, a middle management and training problem exist. Could not wait to get off the ship. Read Less

As retired seasoned travelers who like a variety of experiences, we do not cruise a lot, but, when we do, we select our cruises based first on itinerary and secondly by cruise line. We have 4-5 companies that we will cruise with and then select our ship based on the itineraries that match the interests and schedule of my wife and I. Windstar has long been on our list of cruise lines to try, but our "Best of ABC Caribbean" voyage is the first to work out for us, and it has been very pleasant. With only about 155 passengers on board and approximately the same number of staff, service has obviously not been a problem. It is my understanding that the Legend is a smaller ship recently purchased and refurbished by Windstar’s parent company Xanterra (also the concessioner for the U.S. National Park service). Our cabin (222) was very spacious with a large bath, a walk-in closet, and sleeping and living areas that can be separated by a pull curtain. The room does not have a balcony large enough to sit on (usually a requirement for us), but it does have a double sliding glass door that can be fully opened to create a fully private balcony experience. Very nice. As an older, smaller ship everything is, of course, smaller than one will find on the newer mega-floating hotels. Instead of ten shops, there is one, instead of Olympic-size swimming pools there are 2-3 nice spas, etc. Instead of open buffet dinners, you order from the menu, and instead of nightly musical theater there is a duo performing at the bar. Missing, however, are also curtain climbers running to and fro with their balloon floaties, and the crowds of drunken revelers. One problem we found with the ship is that its best location for dining is the veranda where breakfast and dinner can be eaten outside; however, the veranda is right above the ship’s generator which runs all of the time and intrudes on conversation, especially if your hearing is not the best. Also, although the menu options are nice, there is little to no change from day to day. Not Carnival or Disney (thank goodness), and certainly not for everyone, but for those who are looking for classy relaxation and a pleasant peaceful way to island hop, it is a welcome alternative that we have enjoyed very much. I have not cruised with Seabourn, but having spoken to those who have, the Windstar legend appears to provide a “Seabourn light” experience. Read Less

What can corporate Windstar be thinking? Just got off the Star Legend, the most dangerous and old ship I have ever sailed on in 30 cruises. No safety signs (even for wet paint and varnish), tenders don't work, people are expected to climb dozens of stairs to tenders and hop onto poorly parked and operated tenders - both of which are now broken - and rubber dingies. A nice but in some cases inexperienced crew can do nothing with awful, unsafe, old equipment. And it was a rocky and sea sickening ride more than 1 night. Also, ship does not port where anyone else does and doesn't tell you before hand. No board games onboard or daily activities. What a nightmare. RUN AWAY from this "luxury" cruise. Most annoying things: Used balcomy stateroom next to mine to store and fold sheets. Left door open at night to bang open and close; also went in and out at all hours. WHAT? People were so bored, absolutely nothing was going on on this ship. Even movies and tv reception were lacking. Embarkation is a nightmare. Prepare to wait in the hot sun and wait a lot more before climbing 30 stairs to get onboard and get in another line to get your keys, etc. Tenders broken, waffle machine broken, ice cream machine broken, cannot make pancakes, cannot make a soft egg to save their lives (be it over easy or poached.) Huge markup if you take pre cruise hotel, excursions, or transfer to or from airport (transfer was 3 times more expensive than a cab.) One bbq and one shore party (where people got stranded for almost 2 hours) for lack of transportation does not make a good time. Read Less
