We have travelled much of the world over the last 25 years, but had never yet been to Russia. We chose a river cruise from St Petersburg to Moscow in high season. The price was very reasonable, so we did not expect a 5+ star level of service and care. However, from the moment we boarded until our final disembarkation, we were both enraptured and enthralled with every facet of the cruise. The ship is very long, accommodating about 240 passengers. There are several dining rooms, lounge areas, bars, meeting rooms, large wide decks and even a shop. The suites are small, yet comfortable with large windows, cupboards and a small bathroom with sink, toilet and shower. Our bags fitted perfectly underneath the beds. We hung all our clothes in the wardrobe. The many staff are efficient, caring and professional. They all go the extra mile. Nothing was ever a problem to any of them. The meals were exceptional and abundant. Our Cruise Director, Victoria, was the best ever! She genuinely cared for her team of passengers and went way above and beyond all expectations. She taught us so much Russian history, while she made the cruise exciting and fun for everyone. Her assistant, Daria, was also exceptional in every way.The shore excursions were well organised and informative, with a broad variety of options. We enjoyed an amazing folk show in St Petersburg and another in Moscow. Victoria and Daria took us on a night tour of the amazing Moscow underground Metro. We went inside the Kremlin and enjoyed some amazing night shopping. There was no shortage of entertainment on board for everyone, while the land excursions took us to some of the most amazing palaces and places in the world. This was clearly one of the great highlights of our entire lives! Gary & Debbie Martin. Australia Read Less

Volga Dream has a huge advantage over other Russian river cruises because the passengers stay in luxury hotels in the heart of St. Petersburg and Moscow. The days spent in these two major cities can begin early because there is no wasted time being driven in from the dock. Also, it is easy to walk to restaurants and other places after a day of touring; many special memories were made in the evening as we explored on our own. Beginning with securing a reservation, all of the Volga Dream team gave us excellent service. On board the ship, the meals were varied and always delicious. Our cabin and the rest of the ship was always clean. Our cabin was quite small because we chose the least expensive option. However, we did so in order to be part of the Platinum level tour group. It was well worth it to be in a smaller group and to receive some meals and other perks in the two major cites. On board, my wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary. We were recognized and presented with a special gift. Other highlights on the ship involved taking Russian language lessons and attending each of the Professor's lectures. And, of course, seeing the beautiful countryside from the ship. We hope to return to Russia again one day. If we are able to do so, we will certainly be back on the Volga Dream! Read Less

This is our 2nd cruise with Viking. We had taken the Grand European Cruise the summer before and fell in "love" with the way Viking does cruises and does business. The cabins are awesome, we always get a veranda so we can sip wine and watch the world go by - so much fun. The cabins are well appointed. The food is fabulous and the choices are just right. The ability to choose which trips outside of the cruise - every day was just so nice and the things we could do were so educational and culturally appropriate for Russia. We learned so much - more than you could ever learn in a book, you have to live it. The entertainment was fun on board and on the excursions!!!! Oh....And the service was so nice, our cabin was always neat and clean and the staff was ALWAYS very attentive to our needs. We fell in love with Russia and St. Petersburg in particular. We stayed there a few days in advance of the cruise and someday we hope to return. We would love to return on another cruise in Russia and maybe we will. There is still a lot of the Viking World to explore and return trips will have to wait until we do some more of the "Viking World." The one thing we would re-do is take the advice and do the "Special" tour of the Hermitage - it is 8 hours. We did the regular tour - 4 hours, and were disappointed that we could not stay longer. You could visit there for years and not see all of the Hermitage. We also like the fact that there are NO children on board. We are adults and prefer the company of like minded adults for culture, education, and cruising in no smoking and no gambling. IF we wanted to do that we would go on a cheap ocean cruise with another company. We like Viking on both the Helgi and Baldur River Boats. Read Less

I wanted to see Russia while I still can. It was amazing, a lot different than we thought it would be. Everything was very clean and safe. Except for a weather problem due to the date that we cruised(ice on the lake), everything proceeded without a hitch. The tour guides that accompanied us the ship were very knowledgeable and as were the local guides. The disparity between urban and rural is amazing. The tour of a locals residence is a must. The ship's crew was excellent and very attentive to our requests. The food was great with a lot of regional choices. Our cabin had a veranda which was bigger than our European cruise. We did not sit outside because of the temperature. There was adequate space in our cabin for our belongings and the housekeeping staff kept it very clean. Our cruise actually started in St. Petersburg after a train ride from Helsinki. We would definitely recommend this cruise if you are interested in experiencing Russia. Read Less

We had a wonderful experience on the Viking Helgi just recently from Sankt Petersburg to Moscow. It was was our 3rd Viking cruise and we have been spoiled so far in France and on the Danube, no sure what to expect we made our way to via Helsinki. The Cities been stunning and the tours are really great, nevertheless what really made our trip was the crew onboard. Smiling, friendly and attentive and by far more authentic than any other Viking Cruise. Well it is not always perfect and one can see that they are not up to the standard of the European crew but they are honest and sincere. The weather was still cold and grey in Sankt Petersburg and so we could not make it to the famous Kizi Island but what we got instead was even better. The Captain had to order an ice breaker which we followed through the lakes. Amazing experience. The crew also made a ice breaker party on deck serving drinks with the ice of the lakes. Just funtastic. Well the ship itself is not compareable with any other Viking ship but we informed ourself before hand so there was no surprise. Those are real ships and once they move you feel and hear it. Like the good old days. Well it was for sure not our last Viking cruise and we would like to thank again the Team around Hotel Manager Frank who really made this trip special. Also a big thank you to the Chef and Captain. I've wanted to visit St. Petersburg since having guests from there in 2000. We were never very interested in Ocean Crusing, but the idea of river cruising and traveling to many places without having pack and unpack and schlepp luggase was very attractive. We were busy every day with shore tours, language, history and cultural classes and we loved meeting and dining with new friends, the excellent, friendly staff and the wonderful tour guides. Visiting Russia this way was truely an unforgetable experience and Viking made it easy from beginning to end. We did this cruise in celebration of our 35th wedding anniversary. As we both still work, it was wonderful to spend so much time together in such a relaxing environment. We will always recommend river cruising to our family and friends and that's probably the only way we will cruise in the future/ Many thanks to all the folks at Viking. Booking, activities, crew, service staff and guides...you did a great job of making our trip enjoyable and unforgetable. Read Less

Outstanding crew and service - our cruise was simply magical! The guides were exceptional - highly knowledgable and always went out of their way to accomodate special needs. Great variety of shore excursions or delightful to simply stay aboard ship and relax. Of course the dining experiences were extraordinary, food always exceptional and waiter staff superior. We would definitely go again and recommend highly to our friends. Viking gave us great value and we look forward to many more cruises with them. A highlight of our cruise was meeting new friends that share our interests and love of traveling. We've already planned to cruise again with delightful couple from British Columbia we met on board this cruise. Again I can't say enough about the "above and beyond" level of service, friendliness and professionalism of the entire crew - Viking indeed absolutely spoiled us and set the bar higher other cruises. This was our 2nd Viking cruise, and we sailed on Viking Truvor from St Petersburg to Moscow. Russia was on my "bucket list" for several years and at last we made it! It was so worth it and sailing with Viking took all the hard work out of sightseeing as every trip was arranged for us. Russia was amazing and did not disappoint in any way. Our Cruise guides were so knowledgeable on all aspects of Russian history and they were a joy to listen to. All staff on board Truvor were amazing, they were so helpful and friendly, and activities and lectures were a joy to be a part of. We truly had a wonderful time and it will not be our last Viking cruise! Read Less

AS this is my second Viking Cruise I had high expectations and once I got to St. Petersburg and on the boat everything was excellent. The Boat, the crew, the food, the drinks, the entertainment... it was all top notch. I'll get back to that later as I want to tell everyone about the hassles with booking flights. Viking offered 'free airfare' and I politely refused, but they insisted the free airfare was wonderful. I said I normally upgrade, and they told me that once an airline was assigned I would be able to upgrade with no problems. So 30 days before our sailing date I called Viking and was told that I was assigned to Aeroflot and I could call them to upgrade or use the Viking partner link to do the upgrade online. I went to the Viking link page and guess what. Aeroflot was not even listed as a partner of Viking on that page. So I called Aeroflot and they said it would cost $385.00 per segment to upgrade, but only my travel agent, in this case Viking, could do it. So I called Viking back and said that Aeroflot had it all wrong and that they could not upgrade me. I called Aeroflot again and they confirmed everything I had been told earlier and I called Viking and they insisted they could not upgrade me. Sooo.. I wrote a letter to Viking headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. They faxed my letter back to the California office of Viking and I received a call from the travel manager. She said in fact I could upgrade for $3800. So for a total of $7600 I could upgrade my flights. I politely said no and asked to cancel the trip. I was told there would be sever financial penalties and I pointed out that I was lied to when I booked. Guess I should have had Viking sign something. I grudgingly traveled with my nose up against the seat in front of me for 10 hours, cursing the trip, the cruise, the flight and Aeroflot. I was glad to arrive in Moscow to get the short hop to St. Petersburg. I met other people on board, and they had no problems upgrading with American airlines companies, the problem was just Aeroflot. OK, now to the actual cruise. It was wonderful, much more than my wife and I expected. The Hotel Manager, Wilheim was great, entertaining, and quick to react to anyone's problems. Jeffrey and Elvira were great in the restaurant. As I said the food was great, and on my wife's birthday I spoke to the chef about a surprise cake and said it was all taken care of. I guess they looked at the passports to get her birthdate. The most tasty cake was prepared, and the 6 people at our table each got a piece. My wife and I learned more about Russia, it's history and it's language in those 12 days then we ever could have imagined. We also visited a Russian commune and we surprised at how they lived. We were glad to hear that they were being phased out. We also visited a Russian home in Yaroslavl and it was very much like an American home. Conversations with the Russian people shower we had the same interests, a happy life, good and smart children who are successful, and a long life. Saint Petersburg was beautiful and the museums, cathedrals, and canals were all noteworthy. Moscow was also wonderful. It was clean, seemed safe, and Red Square (Red means beautiful by the way), was very impressive. I would definitely go back to Russia to learn more.... But I would NOT book or accept free airfare from Viking. They treat you like cattle to get to the ship and to get home. That kind of degrades from the rest of the trip. Read Less

My husband retired this year and He wanted a slightly different Holiday, so we choose the Viking, St. Petersburg to Moscow cruise, Waterways of the Tsars. This Holiday cruise will stay with us for the rest of our lives. The ship (Ingvar) was in perfect condition, clean, well appointed with a staff level that was high and all high calibre staff. We paid for the up grade to a veranda suite and this was well worth the additional money. Our room was very clean nicely laid out, albeit a tad small but very well maintained and the lady that looked after the room was nothing less than perfect. Likewise the crew, especially the guys and girls that waited on us made the day to day living absolutly effortless. As has been suggested by some others the initial tours were quite hectic BUT what else could you do, if you want to see as much as possible. The tour guides were marvalous and very very knowledgable. All I can say is that if you would like a holiday where you feel that you are the only person on the vessel this is for you. Thank you VIKING Read Less

From the very start the holiday was wonderful. The coach journey from the airport to the Viking Truvor was comfortable and restful. The cheerful greeting as we boarded was more than expected and we were efficiently shown to our cabins. These were excellent; spacious, clean and well appointed. The dining room was lovely and we especially liked the tables for two by the windows. The dining room and kitchen staff did a wonderful job for the whole two weeks and the food was very good, including all the local delicacies which were served daily. Shore excursions were informative and visually stunning on most occasions as the museums and palaces were some of the finest we had ever seen. Cruising the rivers and lakes of Russia was fascinating and the sheer number and variants of onion domes was mind boggling. The evening entertainment was relaxing which was pleasant after the day's exertions, the lounges both being spacious and comfortable. Moscow came as a great climax to the whole cruise, a beautiful city with lots to see and enjoy. The most amazing thing about the cruise, though, was the Viking Truvor staff, who could not do enough for everyone from start to finish of the trip. The Hotel Manager, The Cruise Director, The Captain and The Maitre'D were so so helpful at all times and the rest of the crew backed them up superbly. All in all one of the best holidays we've ever had, if not the best. Read Less
