Very worthwhile cruise to see new and exciting ports on a first class ship. Although staterooms are.a bit compact and we prefer the “O” class ships, the smaller ship allowed us to dock close to city centers in Bangkok, Ho Chi Min City, Denang and Hong Kong. Entertainment was as expected for this size of ship with some good guest singers although a poor chice in a juggling duo. They did show 2 Academy Award nominated films on board, which was nice. Of course, tea time with the string quartet was always elegant and enjoyable. For some production shows, the quartet would supplement the band giving a much fuller musical experience. Cruise director seemed a bit worn down as he was departing after t months at sea. Food was excellent in all venues as we have come to expect from Oceania.. Great ship. First time on the smaller Oceania ships and it was cute. Still great service and good from Oceania. As a small ship, we were able to get to the best piers closer into the towns which was great. Also, we had 3 ports with a night stay (15 day cruise) so that was great too. We love Oceania. Cabins very small especially the shower but you get used to it. 2 speciality restaurants that were very good..same menu and service as the larger Oceania ships. No Red Ginger or Jaques so if you are on a long cruise, the food options (although very good) may become repetitive. Internet, like all ships was glacial speed and very expensive $27.99 per day (need to buy remaining days package) or $160/200 mins or 99cents per minute. This is one thing that Oceania need to improve on.. Also, information on ports is a little light on if you are doing your own thing in port. Read Less

Positives - Meeting 3 other couples on the boat in our age range - the 2 speciality restaurants on the boat; Toscana & the Polo plus the grand dining room were good. - The ship was small enough to get into ports close to the main city visited. - The string quartet that played around the boat at various times was very good. Negatives - When we stepped on the boat in Singapore on a very hot day we were not handed a cold towel or offered a complimentary soft drink. - The boat was drab with little glamour/wow factor - With most staff having multiple functions they seemed tired and bored at times I assume the “tight” financial ship run by Oceania caused this. Some of the East European staff rather surly. eg we booked the Toscana for 6 which we confirmed the day before and in the morning.When turning up we were told they did not have our booking. They made an error after a different guest cancelled- we did get in as insisted we were correct(later agreed by another member of staff) but the Maitre D was rather negative and no apology at all. Why was a complimentary drink not offered, little cost and the gesture would show they understand good service. - Average age seemed between 75-80 - The shop was dated and had rather quirky opening hours. - An example of mixed messages was using plastic water bottles in the Grand Dining room. This would not be seen in any decent restaurant. - Communication poor eg at ports general info and little staff on hand to direct when getting off the boat. The pool was closed while in Bangkok stopover no prior notice and no real explanation- it was hot & would liked to swim when getting back on the boat. - We only went on one excursion from the boat which was expensive and underwhelming - Large parts of the boat looked tired and in need of an upgrade- the epitome of this was the dead flowers around the pool area- it was if they just did not care. The dead ones were removed & replaced later - Staterooms needed refurbishments especially the antiquated shower. - There were no extra touches eg cold towels when getting back on the boat & around the pool on hot days(did arrive later on cruise), no light refreshments when returning to the boat at certain times( advice use in room dining, not a preferred option!). No nuts/snacks with drinks at the pool bar(health & safety the excuse here) - The closing times of some of the restaurants was draconian - told at 5 minutes before the close to run up & take more food as the hatches were coming down very soon. - In room dining had limited choice eg no eggs can be delivered for breakfast. - Having lots of food does not make it 5* , annoying in the terrace buffet you cannot help yourself- this led to queues at certain food stations. - Evening entertainment was rather weak most nights. - No effort from the boat director to get the “younger” passengers together even though he joked no one went to Horizons at 10.30pm even with 2 for 1 drinks until 11.30. - Internet service intermittent- I couldn’t get e-mails until last few days of the trip this was common to lots of other passengers. - In talking to other passengers there were very many dissatisfied with the boats services & appearance - The infomercial run on the boats antiquated stateroom TV used the Riviera boat as the example for the Oceania luxury which was depressing as the Nautica was a few notches below the standard shown. - Charging $89 pp for Cambodia Visa- actual cost $30- even taking into account admin costs this seemed excessive. - Spa area very dated especially the so called extra facility for the next level of guests - the hot tub and surrounding area small and tired. Had "Canyon Ranch" agreed to this poor facility. One manicurist available for approx 300 women on the boat! - In conclusion this ship is not 5* which I believed it was marketed to us & we are aware of what this is eg Oberoi hotels, the rosewood London,the Langham HK etc. - We had a great trip despite the Nautica as we had to accept the destinations were key and not the transport that took you there Read Less

We chose the cruise based on the itinerary and reviews of Oceana. We loved it and met many great people on the ship! The food was wonderful, especially in the speciality restaraunts. The ship itself was really pretty. This cruise started in Singapore and traveled to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and ended in Hong Kong. The real advantage of this cruise and ship was the port locations. Bigger ships cannot get as close to the destination therefore causing 2-3 hour commutes to the actual destination. I will definitely travel on Oceania again. My favorite port was Saigon. The ship was right there and so easy to travel back and forth. Something not clearly advertised is that the ship provides transport to town center in most ports! This is very important so you don't have to worry with a taxi u till you get to town center. The excursions can be pricey but provide a good experience. We wish the wifi on board had been better. Read Less

The places the boat stopped are great.....but going back to the room was a problem! The rooms are small & they called it a suite........NOT! The bathroom was also very small! Our friends, who are large people had to shower half in & half out of the shower! Food was good. The staff was wonderful! Boat felt old. The beds are great, as is the bedding! The housekeeping staff couldn't do enough for us. Dinning staff was great & worked hard to make sure we were happy. Some of the ports where very far from main area. Had to drive between 2-3.5 hours to the areas the tours went. Heard from other people the bigger boats from Oceania are much nicer. Better restaurants choices also. Bottom line I know the room is not the most important part of a trip, but it would have made the trip more enjoyable! This is making me think to try a River Cruise next time. Read Less

The itinerary was the main reason for selecting this cruise. Also the boat is identical to an Azamara cruise we went on in the past which we absolutely loved. Plus Oceania was rated 1/2 star more "luxurious" than Azamara. I thought we couldn't go wrong. Post cruise: I feel the ratings are reversed. Azamara outshines Oceania for several reasons. First: Oceania charges for alcohol. OK, great. Seems cheap to me to charge for the basic package. Sure, charge for premium spirits and high-end wines, but rail pours or basic beers and wines you charge? So I emailed Oceania from their "contact us" link on their website a month before sailing to ask questions about the beverage package options posted on their website. Oceania did not respond to my message. OK great, their customer service is also lacking and I haven't even embarked yet. Second: Sometimes the customer service on board was just as lacking as the customer service prior to embarking. Several times when we dined at Terrace Cafe or Waves Grille, we sat for a long time before being greeted by the wait staff. Service there was hit or miss. Examples of some of the more frustrating incidents (there were many, many more but these are the highlights): (1) At Waves Grille we sat at a table that was recently vacated by another couple so the table was dirty - but all the other tables were taken and dirty table was the only choice. We sat there for several minutes and no wait staff helped us. Another table next to us vacated and another couple sat at that dirty table. Immediately wait staff helped the other couple at the other table. So, after a 3rd table near us vacated and we still weren't helped, I started clearing the dirty dishes from our table and placed them on the recently vacated table and a waiter finally approached us to get us clean dishes, silverware and beverages. It's as if we were invisible for a good 10 minutes. (2) In Terrace Cafe we had the worst time on several occasions getting wait staff to provide us with beverages. This is a buffet for food only - all beverages must be provided by wait staff. If that's the case, put more staff on shift during dining hours. The current level of staff is not adequate. How are you going to sell more alcoholic beverages (since you don't have all-inclusive pricing) if your staff is not attentive? And when we'd finally flag down someone to ask if we could place a drink order, there were a couple wait staff who seemed downright frustrated we'd dare to pester them for beverages. I think they might have been managers because I often saw them standing around telling other people to do things and then the staff would be so focused on rearranging chairs for empty tables than focused on customers sitting there needing help from wait staff. Then if our iced tea or wine or beer was empty, no one was coming around to ask if we'd like more even though we were dining there with clearly empty beverages. Again, we'd have to flag down staff to request more. (3) We finally gave up on the "seat yourself" dining venues and decided the Grand Dining Room would be better because then we'd have a dedicated waiter who would help us. Fantastic. Well, we had completed the mid-cruise feedback survey and as soon as we sat down in the Grand Dining Room someone came to our table to say, "Thank you for the feedback, I'm so sorry about your experience. Can I get you a glass of wine for the trouble?" Sure - we'll each take a glass of wine since you're charging for it normally. This is a kind gesture. As expected, dinner at the Grand Dining Room was much better because of a dedicated waiter. And then at the end of the meal the waiter charged us for the wine anyway. OK, so whomever greeted us and thanked us for our feedback didn't communicate to the waiter that he offered us this wine as a "sorry for the poor service" gesture. We did not argue with the bill because we were just....done. Then there was the late night entertainment, or lack thereof. They had a singing and dancing troupe which was talented. However, they were not diverse. I mean, how can you have a Motown themed night and not have one diverse member of the troupe? Take a look at the real artists who made Motown famous - not a single singer/dancer on board had any ethnic diversity resembling Motown. Get my drift? Then the 10th floor Horizons bar was DEAD every night. Hire a DJ. That's my best advice. Not everyone on this cruise is retired or asleep by 9pm. Hire a DJ and the people who are not retired (and even some who are) will be out on that dance floor till bar close. This is where Azamara outshines Oceania BY FAR. We were in the bar every night on our Azamara cruise dancing till bar close to a DJ. The "jukebox" thing they have on Oceania is like an iPad itunes list. Oh, and they have a sub woofer in front of it so it's difficult to access. We were immensely disappointed in the "night" scene. We had an inside stateroom and we felt the bed should be positioned differently OR should not be positioned IN FRONT OF the mirrors on the wall. Mirrors in small spaces make the space feel bigger. Think about how that's configured and I bet you can come up with something a bit better. Positives about the cruise: our stateroom attendant, Sunil, was amazing. The bartender at the pool bar, Jasmina, was fantastic. There were waiters and waitresses at the pool bar that were also fantastic (cannot remember all their names). The Destination Services team were GREAT! We were on a couple excursions where they also attended and it was fun getting to talk with them a little bit. They were very down to earth and respectful. The Reception staff was always well informed and helpful. And I have to say the cruise director, David, was always on point. All in all, we decided we will not cruise Oceania again. It's OK. But there's better. Azamara will be getting our cruising business going forward. Read Less

I had cruised with Oceania before on the Insignia in the Mediterranean. After cruising on a large cruise ship, I had sworn not to ever take another cruise, but Oceania changed my mind. The food is top-notch with so many different choices at any meal and at different restaurants. You can dress casual and eat in terrace cafe at their buffet or dress up a bit and eat a multi-course meal in the Main dining room. They also offer two specialty restaurants, Toscana and Polo Grill, which I highly recommend. Another thing that we found out is that if you call the specialty restaurants, they often have cancellations and can fit you in. Our room was always spotless and our stewardess and her assistant went out of their way to help us with anything needed. The drink prices are outrageous, what you would expect from a nice restaurant in NYC. We all bought the premium beverage package and it really worked for us. The wines by the bottle are not included, but we found the selections by the glass to be good. We did not go to any of the shows, as that is really not our "cup of tea". Speaking of tea, the high tea offered in horizons was always lovely. We also did all of our own private excursions, which was a much better deal. After experiencing the excursions on the Insignia, I was not looking forward to being packed like cattle onto a bus and finding it hard to hear the guide at the back of the group. The service was almost flawless, they seemed a bit understaffed on this trip and their were a few hiccups at dinner some evenings. I am not a crazy perfectionist and understand that everything can not be perfect all of the time. Having said this, any problems that we had were rectified immediately. All of the crew was very personable, remembered your name, what you liked to drink, your favorite dishes, etc. Will cruise with Oceania again! Read Less

Excursions. For us, though, in Thailand we only went to Bangkok and missed another excursion because the ship had to leave earlier than planned due to low tide. So, Thailand was a disappointment as it is a huge, crowded city and way too much traffic.Cannot say we really saw the real Thailand. We enjoyed Vietnam. Saigon tour very good. We suggest that you pay extra or take your own tour to Hanoi in Vietnam, as it is over a 3 hour ride into Hanoi. You will be gone for 11 hours, 6 to 7 hours drive in one day. It was a really good experience as we had an excellent time visiting Hanoi. We recommend the kayaking tour in Sinahookville, Cambodia. It is a very poor place, so if you take the tuktuk or bus tour in the 90 degree heat and visit places where the poor kids are begging everywhere, it may not enjoyable. Also, if you have a choice to go on on the OE excursion even though it is more expensive, you will have only 10-16 people on your tour rather than a whole bus load. Much more personalized. Our stateroom was not very large, but it was fine with a balcony. We signed up for the Concierge level as the amenities are worth it. The bathroom is very small, and a couple of "big" men said they could not fit in the shower. We have been on 3 Oceania cruises, so we were not surprised. Dining choices are really good with 3 restaurants, 2 of which you need a reservation. The service was fabulous. Enjoyed the entertainment and activities--Many to select from. Read Less

We were so disappointed from the moment we were shown to our stateroom. The room was very dirty...sticky spots on carpet, black, greasy handprints on bathroom door and the shower had black soap scum all around the shower base. When brought to their attention they asked for an add'tl 2 hr. For a clean-up. The room was dated and incredibly tiny with a bathroom so small you could not p/u a bar of soap if it fell in the shower. We had paid for the "concierge verandah" and were appalled, tried immediately to up-grade but there was nothing available. The bedside table was 6 to 7" below the level of mattress, with no drawer, and when we brought it up to the concierge, her answer was they had recently changed the mattresses? The first evening we were booked in The Polo Grill" and by morning my husband was definitely ill with the "trots". Late on Day 3 we had to consult the medic, there was a line-up, and he prescribed 3day antibiotics, anti-spasmodic S and a charcoal drink for which he was pleased to present a $570. U S bill. One week later I had a room service omelette which wiped out my next day in Saigon, again tainted food. Friends had raved about the food as being superior...not the case! We have previously sailed on Regent, Seabourn and even Princess through the Panama, which were all superior in every aspect! Service, food and facilities. At the moment, we are inclined to call it our last cruise as it was just such an unanticipated failure. Read Less

Smooth embarkation at Singapore. Rooms compact but comfortable and very clean. Bathroom on the small size but adequate. Worth booking concierge or above for the extra perks ie free WIFI of 500 minutes and extra specialty restaurant bookings. Drinks are expensive, however Oceania is lenient when bringing some alcohol for cabin consumption onboard. Mini bar is loaded with soft drinks of your choice. The dining venues are varied with much choice of superior food. Afternoon tea was also a highlight with fine quality offerings. To balance all this, there is a small but well equipped gymnasium with modern machines and a gym supervisor, Adamir, to assist. Staff service throughout the ship at all times was first class including, Jacques, who patiently assisted with any internet queries. The shore excursions and private transfers were exorbitantly priced and best avoided. Better to register with Cruise Critic Roll Call and prearrange tours with other passengers. Stayed at Marriott Tang before the cruise on Orchard Road, beautiful place. A must visit is the Gardens by the Sea at the Marina Bay Sands resort complex, and Ce La Vie restaurant on the 49 th floor with spectacular views. Also highly recommended is the Jim Thompson Thai restaurant on Demsey Hill. The Jim Thompson store is a short taxi ride from the ship dock in Khlong Toei, which is only a few miles from the center of Bangkok. This location is a big advantage over larger cruise-ships that must dock 3 hours from Bangkok. The Nautica is beautiful, and in keeping with the Oceania tradition, this ship has the same very high quality food not found on other cruiselines. The Toscana specialty restaurant serves the best Italian meals, superior to any Italian restaurant on land. The pounded veal chop, or the osso bucco are the best we have ever eaten. The entertainment was also excellent. Ollie Makeean from the UK, Steve Corte, and Sally Adams were wonderful. The service staff provided excellent care and attention to the passengers. The grill offers steaks, jumbo shrimp, and lobster tails every night. The dining features a brunch with spectacular displays and ice carvings. At the conclusion of the cruise we stayed for two nights at the Shangri La Kowloon which offers beautiful spectacular rooms facing Hong Kong Harbor. They served an excellent breakfast buffet, and have live entertainment in the lobby at night. In Sihanoukville Cambodia we visited the Don Bosco training facility that takes in 18 year olds for a 2 year apprenticeship who are either very poor or are orphans. They are trained and certified to be able to work in five star resorts in Thailand. In Bangkok we used the services of a local guide who took us to the floating market, railroad market, and for elephant rides. Read Less

After reading some of the reviews on Cruise Critic we were a bit apprehensive about whether the high standards of our two previous Nautica cruises would be maintained, since the NCL acquisition. We need not have worried! The ship was clean, crew were great, and the food was excellent, even though the menu did get a bit repetitive towards the end of the cruise. Our fellow passengers were a mix of folk from USA, Canada, NZealand, and Australia and though mainly retirees a few younger couples too. The library was well patronised, but whoever chooses the books, I think buys them by the yard...six copies of the same books! The entertainment staff Luke, Chris, Susannah and Savanah were talented young people with excellent voices, and they worked hard during the day too with various deck sports. The cruise director David was pleasant and ran General Knowledge Quizzes every day as well as running the tours and tenders into port. The ports however, were a different story! Singapore was great, but after that the experience in the ports deteriorated. Unless you are hooked on Temples, and want to experience life in a third world country this is an itinerary you might want to miss. The contrast between the people who have everything and the millions who have nothing was very much in evidence. Every time we went ashore we were constantly pestered by beggars, taxi drivers and the tuk tuk's who would not accept "no thank you" . Sihanoukville in particular was awful and it appeared to be just a convenient stop for passengers to be offloaded for overnight tours to Ankor Wat . In Summary: I would cruise with Oceania again, but would research the itinerary in detail before choosing which cruise. Read Less

We were very disappointed in two aspects of this cruise. One, the staterooms were old, small and outdated. We paid for a concierge-level verandah, which we do on all cruises we take. The room was smaller than we are used to, and the bathroom was awful. The bathroom was similar to airplane bathrooms with the addition of a small shower which was nearly impossible to turn around in and not possible to dry oneself in. In addition, it often had a mild sewage smell. We paid for what we thought was a luxury cruise, but I do not rate it as such. Oceania advertises its cruises as being for "foodies." This is so untrue! The food in the main dining room was very uneven. Some was fairly good, but not of gourmet quality. Some was inedible. I complained on the mid-cruise evaluation and was called by the chef. When I specified exactly what was wrong, he became rather defensive, saying that some people like the food. I will say that the two upscale dining rooms were quite good and much more consistent. We ate there whenever we could get reservations. We liked that there is not an uncharge for these restaurants. Oceania is a little sneaky and unclear about just what expenses are covered in the cruise price and what are not. We were told that our service charges were included, but we had to renegotiate this once onboard. We knew in advance that alcohol was not included, but we were appalled at the prices of wine and the "service charge" added to each bottle. In addition, the Canyon Ranch Spa is VERY expensive for low quality service and facilities. When I had a massage, I found NO clean bath mats, only dirty, used ones on the floor outside the showers and no attendants to take care of these things. The spa seemed very understaffed and poorly managed. I paid $90 + 18% service charge for an absolutely horrendous manicure. I went back to have it removed, and they did give me a refund. In short, Oceania needs to decide whether it is a luxury, smaller boat cruise line or just an average, run of the mill line. It really isn't either, and it suffers from this. The cruise fares are high enough that it should be classified as luxury, all-inclusive. Yet, the company adds on this charge and that, stooping to the practices of the lower-fare lines. While we selected this cruise for the itinerary, we were disappointed enough in the ship and the cruise line that we would be unlikely to cruise with Oceania again. I should add a few positives, as it was not all bad. The beds were VERY comfortable, the lectures about the ports were academic and engaging, and the cruise director was a very nice and interesting person. The library was well-stocked. The staff, in general, worked very hard and were attentive and pleasant. The service in the restaurants could be improved by better training of the staff. Read Less

We returned last week from our sensational Oceania cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong, with stops in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Oceania consistently offers a superior cruise experience. Since my last Oceania cruise, I think they even improved the food, and I didn't think it was possible to improve on the food. The service, the staff, the food and everything else about the ship was perfect. The staff bent over backwards to make sure the guests had a wonderful experience. Our malfunctioning DVD player and burned out light bulb were changed instantly, and we didn't even have to ask the staff to change them. Raj and Michael, our cabin stewards were outstanding. We had plenty of ice and Diet Cokes in our cabin. The room was always perfectly cleaned and neat. Daniel, at Reception, had our DVD player replaced while we were at lunch. He and Marco were always very pleasant and helpful. We booked the ship's shore excursions and I think they have improved on the excursions too. The staff working the shore excursion desk were very pleasant and I got a good tip on a tour from Alan. The Grand Dining Room, Polo Grill, Toscana, Waves Grill, the Terrace Cafe and Room Service were outstanding. Paul Climescu and Sasha were great and always made sure things ran smoothly. Gianluca Mazza made amazing dishes in Toscana. It was a treat to taste everything. I dream about the involtini. Conny Hammelmann and Stefano Morelli were a pleasure to meet and see around the ship. Raffaele Cinque, the General Manager, was always visible and had a big smile on his face. I told him how much we loved Oceania and he even sent me a thank you note. My travel partner, who is a physician, got shingles on the first day of our cruise. She went to the ship's doctor and was impressed that they carried the medication she needed. The gym is well equipped and was crowded in the morning. Gerry, the guest lecturer, was very interesting and never referred to notes when he spoke. He interacted with guests throughout the cruise. I have traveled on Crystal, Seabourn, Viking (the worst), Princess, Cunard, Paul Gauguin, and Seven Seas Mariner and nobody beats Oceania for me. We knew we were in for a special experience when we arrived at the Singapore Cruise Center. There were thousands of people lined up for the Holland America cruise leaving from the next berth, as we were waved past all of them, dropped off our luggage, sped through customs, and directly onto the ship. Our inside stateroom was lovely, and quite spacious. Every member of the staff was friendly and gracious, and made a point of remembering our names. I have a culinary background, and asked if I could tour the galley. Sadly, the answer was no, because of security concerns, but the next morning, the Food & Beverage manager found me and made sure I met the Executive Chef. We booked most of our excursions through Oceania, since it was our first time in this part of the world, and found them generally satisfying. One exception was the tour to the ancient kingdom ruins in Thailand. We were promised a Thai luncheon, but our tour guide took us to a mediocre Chinese luncheon at a western hotel. And it was a bit wearing to have a "shopping opportunity" on each and every excursion, when you know that the cruise line and the shop have their hands in each others' pockets. But that's a small objection to an overall fantastic cruise. Lovely, cultured, well-traveled fellow passengers as well. We will seek out Oceania again for future cruises. Read Less

The adventure started in finding the right cruise terminal in Singapore -- there are two, and our cab driver got it right the second time. But cabs in Singapore are cheap, so no harm, no foul. A very large Holland America ship was boarding at the same time, so the queue seemed to wend its way for miles until we saw the Nautica personnel holding their signs up. We bypassed the queue completely, and breezed through the embarkation process like rock stars. Our inside room was larger than we had experienced on Princess. We were able to maneuver around one another without choreography (You Stand There While I Move Here, cha-cha-cha). Lots of storage, and a shower that you could actually turn around in. Really comfortable bed, and nice squishy pillows (unlike the foam logs you so often find.) Four electrical plugs, 2 European round prongs, and 2 American, with one of the American devoted to the obligatory night-light -- bring universal adapters if you travel with electronics. Loved the ambience on the ship, with the emphasis on adult travel. And really loved the small (600 passenger) ship. The food was uniformly excellent. The staff was lovely. The only hiccup in our cruise was dense fog in Canton. We parked about 24 nautical miles from port waiting to get in, and when it was evident that the fog wouldn't lift, we weighed anchor and headed to Hong Kong. Our pre-paid tours were refunded and we enjoyed another day at sea. Would i go again? Yep, in a heartbeat. Best comment heard: "Can't they clean up the garbage near their shacks?" Read Less

We recently travelled on a cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong on the Oceania's Cruise Line Ship Nautica. This is a 6 star ship which did not quite live up to the hype.Firstly this ship is strangely a class ship. If you have a cabin on decks 7 and 8 you have butler service and excellent suites and are able to eat in the 2 excellent speciality restaurants almost at will. Also you appear to have identification which is different from the rest and of course you pay the premium. This top level is perhaps just 6 star provided the clients do not use the rest of the ship, the rest is anything but and is far worse than the same sized Ocean Princess and not in the same league as Crystal Cruises. The lower decks get one opportunity at each of the specialty restaurants but the rest of the time you eat in the Grand Dining room or the Tapas restaurant. The food in all is generally good but having said that we both had food poisoning which lasted for nearly a week. I was unable to eat at all for some 3 days and came back 5 pounds lighter. We ate or drank nothing that was not supplied by the ship but I believe the problem was probably from eating out on shore excursions arranged by the ship. I politely talked to the reception as I thought they may wish to check their kitchens because although I suspected the food from the shore excursions (Raffles, Pnom Penn and a luxury restaurant on the Mekong Delta) I could not be certain. I was rung by the Concierge minutes later with the words that nobody else had the problem and we must have licked our fingers whilst out. This was an unfortunate lie as my wife was sitting behind a similar patient in the doctors and we met at least 14 other suffers (all from the same trips) and a crew member had told me that there were many with my problem. Unfortunately this is a cruise line that is extremely difficult if you want to do your own thing on shore and you have to do the shore excursions. Unfortunately I like to do a mixture with excursions so that I do not have to eat out or go to the obligatory souvenir shops but the choice of landing times and cruise ports make this difficult and mostly impossible. This ship should have landed at Da Nang but landed at a jetty 30 miles from it with only a dirt road to it and absolutely nothing else for miles, in Guangzhou it landed 40 miles from the city in the industrial port and in Hong Kong it landed at the end of the island where there were no taxi's or anything else. With great opportunism the cruise line offered to take people to the airport in a bus at a cost of 107$ each instead of a taxi at 40$ total. It was claimed that the ship was bumped out of the main dock by the Star ferry but the Ocean Princess, Seabourn and Aquarious had no trouble and there was one completely empty cruise dock. Ports seemed to change regularly at the last minute. The cost of excursions was excessive even in the cruise world for trips that included the usual souvenir shop visits. The young crew are excellent throughout always with a smile and very efficient. Officers and managers often seemed to have a major problem and whilst they worked hard they smiled little and the atmosphere was not good and I guess they were at the end of a long stint although the assistant cruise director and chef were excellent and they did at least say hello without the typical fixed smile through gritted teeth. The Cruise Director was banging on about departure 6 days from the start. The accommodation was good and stewards superb and unfortunately we saw too much of the cabin. Entertainment is OK but limited, lectures were solely on American finance, politics and Wikileaks effect in the USA by a lovely Professor but of limited interest to non Americans (probably50%) or to anybody who came to get away from this. I would have loved to have heard about the region and places we visited. There was a USA pilot who spent 6 years in prison in the "Hanoi Hilton" who gave a talk to a few US friends but they were not allowed to publish it. We would have liked to go for a drink before dinner but as everybody goes to dinner at the same time it is impossible to get a seat in really the only useable Martini's bar (It only usually holds 30 maximum and usually 20) but only managed to get a seat once so stayed in our room. After the meal the same problem occurred and most people wandered off to bed before the show. It was like a ghost ship from around 9.00pm. Most times the show had a hardy 70 souls attending although one or two were better attended and the crew party was the highlight. The whole of deck 5 needs a rethink as a superb quartet played by the staircase but there were a few chairs to sit on and the position was uncomfortable. The rest is occupied by a sad looking casino and 2 equally sad boutiques. It would have been nice to have had a good coffee bar and a comfortable bar or bars. I unfortunately expected that people would at least dress up smartly for the Grand Dining Room but basically a pair of trousers and a Polo shirt was good enough and people generally came in as dressed on the tours or from the deck and the Tapas casual restaurant was strangely better dressed. The sun deck only had about 15 loungers each side not in the sun and these were booked (by books) although rarely were many used. There were only a few on the promenade decks and I actually retreated to my room on some occasions a balcony is essential on this cruise line. I finally gave up on the pretence when a Sommelier explained the finer merits of a bottle of wine that came out at 45$ which I had bought in Tesco for 6$ (£4.50) a few weeks previously. If you charge good prices at least give good product. Maybe the line has lost sight of its present cash generator in its rush to get its new cruise ship going but I was fed up of meeting people with a complaint that had been upset further by the ships attitude to it. The cruise is poor in comparison to the other cruises that we have been on (double figures) except for the food and might just be 3 star for those in the lower class( Somebody we met actually said that it did not stand up to a Thompson Cruise). We enjoyed our holiday in spite of Oceania as we saw the places we wanted to see and they should be credited for that. We were invited to join some N. American friends(not on this cruise) on an Oceania cruise next year just prior to going on this one but we fortunately waited to see what this was like and have now said no and they will no doubt are having second thoughts. This line could offer so much and they get A for effort and Z for application. If they were not bringing on new ships I would honestly have thought they had money troubles such was the level of "Nickel and Diming" as some Americans put it. Seabourn may have been a better option and I doubt if it would be more expensive all in but Princess or any of the others are a much better bet. I just completed Oceania's Asian Wonders cruise on Nautica January 15-30, 2011. I am an Oceania groupie and love the ambiance, excellent service, exceptional food, and the type of clientele attracted to Oceania. I have cruised on all three small ships over a period of 6 years. I chose Asian Wonders because I specifically wanted this itinerary, and was not disappointed. Be aware that going to Hanoi is a long 3 ½ hour drive from the port each way making a long day and a long drive. Destination Services offered an overnight in Hanoi -- a better time management option. Otherwise proximity from port to city was not excessive. When shipboard changes occurred in the past it was usually a positive change and often not noticed by guests. However, I was disappointed to experience the change in management of Oceania@Sea. I immediately expressed my feelings to the concierge about this. It seems Oceania has contracted out the services, thus no service is offered, except use of the PC's. For returning guests, this is a big change. No longer is it possible to download photos and cut CD's, or provide computer classes. For most of the older generation, it was very confusing to use the PC's, as there were 2 logins; one for Oceania cruise mail and the other for internet. Emails were $3.95 per each incoming and outgoing, but internet time was exorbitant per minute. You had to login to internet just to use Microsoft Word to create your messages, so you ended up creating online. Thus no way to economize the costs. To reply to emails, you had to login to internet. Even the folks with personal PC's had problems in their rooms, and had to consult with the lone (that's right - only one) person for the whole ship. This happened often when they were composing emails and they lost all their content and had to start over. To sum it up, it wasn't pretty and the contractor wasn't especially nice. (I reported this also, and thereafter, I tried harder and he was nicer.) A suggested change for Oceania: Get rid of smoking in Horizons! It is a blight on the beauty of this gorgeous room and impossible to rid the smoke smell. Read Less

We had booked this cruise almost a year ago but upgraded from Concierge to Penthouse when the opportunity came a few months before embarkation. The experience was generally seamless until we returned to Sydney airport and joined the queues. Embarkation- Singapore cruise centre was chaotic as a few ships were in port at the same time. Nautica staff guided us individually from kerbside to immigration-otherwise we would still be roaming the terminal.Check in was reasonably quick and lunch was provided while cabins were finished. Cabins- Ours was comfortable and roomy with a decent size verandah,everything worked,and it was spotless. Service - Our butler introduced himself as we arrived at the cabin. He was invaluable with on board organisation and room service. There were two cabin stewards and the cabin was cleaned twice per day.Always spotless. Dining - food was fine and the portions served in the Grand dining room and the specialty dining rooms seemed to be designed to encourage the tasting of multiple courses rather than simply stuffing the belly. Dining room staff were always on hand and were helpful and polite. Entertainment - low key and enjoyable. The cruise director showed remarkable restraint with her broadcasts. (Broadcasts did not penetrate into the cabins except for safety notifications). Ports - generally were of little interest to us but the procedure for going ashore by gangway or by tender was well organised. We experienced few holdups. Most of the ports visited are not on the pop-up menus in the "Port Review "section. In Semarang and Bali we opted for private transport and experienced the heat,congestion ,dirt and mendicants. In Darwin, TI and Townsville the towns were basically closed down for the New Year holidays. Hamilton Island was perfect except it seemed everyone else from the other towns had arrived there for their holidays. Overall, we were looking to be pampered and pampered we were. After 40 years of travelling, living more in hotels than home,I have never seen service better than this. Cleanliness and maintenance seemed to be almost obsessive. I do not see the need to sail on another line, this one will do (although I might just splurge on a Vista suite for the next one) Read Less

Our background: We are a Danish couple in the mid-late 50s, and this cruise was our first cruise ever. For that reason, I obviously cannot compare the cruise to any previous cruises, but I can compare it to our expectations, and after all, I guess that's what really counts. Our travel plan: We arrived in Singapore 3 days early, to get over the jetlag, and also because we love Singapore, and wanted a few days in this great city. Flying Business Class on Singapore Airlines turned out to be a great idea. Wonderful service and great food on board made time fly (sorry!) on the long flight. On Dec 20th we boarded Nautica, and for 18 days it was our "home". More about the cruise itself later. Arriving in Sydney on Jan 7th, we stayed here for another 3 days, before we started the long journey back to Denmark. However, we had chosen to split the journey into two parts, so on Jan 10th we flew to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, and stayed here for 3 days, and then finally on Jan 13th we took a Lufthansa flight back to Europe. The itinerary: Singapore: Stayed on Raffles hotel. It is expensive, but you should try it - it is worth every cent! Singapore itself: Great city, lots of shopping, eating and entertainment. Semarang, 1st stop on the cruise: Three words can describe this place: Poor, dirty, boring. Drop this stop in future cruises - the city has absolutely nothing to offer. There is a huge temple - Borobodur - a couple of hours' drive from the city. According to people who went there, it was sort of OK. Good advice to anybody who is unlucky enough to get to Semarang: Make sure you book a decent air-conditioned taxi - do no (and I repeat: do not!) enter one of the old vans that offer a drive - they are dirty, uncomfortable, and hot. Bali, Christmas Eve+Day: A lot better. Nice beaches, but beware of the "local business people". If you accept to buy a small souvenir, they will immediately target you as a rich stupid tourist that will buy anything. It was good fun to celebrate Christmas a place like this. Though Bali is part of Indonesia, it does not follow Muslim laws: Alcohol is available everywhere, and clothing and attitude is more relaxed than in other places of Indonesia. Komodo: This island was unfortunately skipped, as a previous storm had disrupted the harbour. As compensation we got another 3 hours on Bali. Considering the situation this was OK. Darwin, Cairns and Townsville: Nice towns, although very hot. We did not join any of the tours, as we wanted time to have a stroll through the town centres and just enjoy the atmosphere. One idea for Oceania: It turned out, that the arrival of Nautica in all 3 towns came as a surprise for the town and the local public travel companies. This meant that local busses were only organized in last minute, or not at all. I fully appreciate that Oceania wants to sell their own tours, but for us who just want to go to the town centre, it would be highly appreciated, if local transportation companies were made aware that ~700 people were arriving in the harbour and needed transportation. It would only have taken a phone call to the local transport authorities a few days in advance (I am sure that their phone numbers can be found on the Internet) to make them know that there was an urgent need for transportation (and business to do!) Thursday Island: Between Darwin and Cairns we visited this small and very nice island. Although a bit primitive, it was good fun to do a little shopping (and having a beer on the northern most pub in Australia). Hamilton and Whittsunday Islands. Again some very nice small islands with lots of atmosphere! We went on an Oceania tour here (the only one we did!). The tour took us to Whiteheaven Beach. The tour as such was OK, but very expensive: USD 169 per person, when booked through Oceania! The tour was actually operated by a local company, and open to anybody. Booking through the local company directly cost AUS$ 103 (approx USD 70) per person. So Oceania charged us further USD 99 per person purely for booking fee and having a member of staff to point you the 50 meters from the pier where the Nautica tender anchored, to the pier where the local boat was waiting!!! Further we did not find the quality of the tour (food, seating etc) to be up to Oceania standard. I know that we cannot really blame Oceania for this, as it was operated by another company. However, if Oceania wants to make such a huge profit on a tour, we would expect something better, and we certainly did expect something more for the USD 99 pp. that went straight into Oceania's pockets. We promised ourselves that we would not book any more excursions through Oceania, unless they are fully operated by Oceania. Brisbane: Lovely city. I wish we had more time here! Oceania, how about this: If you decide to drop Semarang, then we can spend an extra day in Brisbane. I think that everyone would like the idea. The days at sea: Of the 18 days in total, 8 days were at sea. These were days that I had feared before the cruise: I am really not the person who can lie at the pool all day - doing nothing. The first 1 or two days were a bit frustrating, but then I learned the trick: Just RELAX! As soon as I had understood this wonderful idea, the sea days became very pleasant, indeed! And it turned out, that there actually was lots to do: Wine tastings, Martini mixing courses, Food shows by the chefs, quiet times in the library, and of course: Food, food, food! I have never seen so much food in my life. And not only in huge quantities, but very high quality as well. The choice in the evening restaurants was excellent, and I will never forget the porterhouse steaks in the Polo Grill. We were in a penthouse suite, so we were guaranteed 2 visits in each of the two specialty restaurants, but in fact we went to the Polo Grill 7 times! Just be a little flexible, and there will be no problems. Of course it also helped that the cruise was quite long, I guess than on shorter cruises it may be more difficult to get extra reservations. Sydney: Disembarkation went just as smooth as the embarkation did. We had booked 3 nights at the Shangri-la hotel, not through Oceania but on the Internet. That worked well, and we saved a couple 100's $. Oceania offered a "Disembarkation package" that literally was a taxi from the terminal to the hotel. Such a package cost US$99 per person. We did not take this offer: Outside the terminal there were lots of taxis for hire, so we entered one and he took us to the hotel for AU$15 (approx US$11). Saved: US$187. In Denmark we have a word for that, and that is "robbery". What can I say about Sydney? We have been here a couple of times before, and to me it is one of the most wonderful cities in the world. There is so much to see and to do that we really had to do some hard prioritizations for our 3 days. Ho Chi Minh City: This was our first visit to Vietnam, and we really enjoyed it. We stayed at Caravelle hotel in the city centre, and the hotel was very good. Overall HCMC was a great place, and we hope to be back some other time! Conclusion: The ship was absolutely fantastic, very nice and very well kept. The stateroom was good, clean and comfortable. Bathroom was a bit on the small side, but very well organized so there was enough space. There were lots of shelves to put your own things. Everything on Nautica was as one would expect it to be on a 5-star hotel: The reception area, the destination service desk, shops etc lived up to our expectations. The laundry room was working very well, and if you plan to do your laundry at off-peak times (i.e. feeding times, happy hour and high-tea), you will usually find an empty machine. The entertainment was good: In particular we enjoyed the magical shows by Des and Cherry King, but also the other entertainers were excellent. Wife says that the pool could have been bigger, so that you would actually be able to have a swim, but then again: It was never crowded. The open seating principle in the restaurants is working fine. We never waited for more than a couple of minutes for a table. Further, it is excellent that we always have a choice: Dine alone, or join a table with other passengers. We did about 50-50 between these options, and enjoyed every evening. The food was better than expectations (and they were high!), the fellow passengers were great, and especially for first-time cruisers as we were, we got a lot of good advice, and met people we certainly want to see another time. But the one thing that really made the difference was the crew! Helpful, kind, always smiling, they did small miracles. I never heard a "No" on the entire cruise! Our cruise director, Dottie Kulasa, did a fantastic job. She was present whenever needed, and still she had time to do her small daily TV-presentations, and a lot of other stuff. We are convinced that in fact there were 2 "Dotties" on board, because one person could never have done so much! Also special thanks to Zvoni in Martinis for creating the wonderful drinks, and to Panarat and Yevgeny for their outstanding service. So, was the cruise good? The answer to that can only be YES! This is the second time in a year that I have sailed with Oceania. The first on Regatta from Rio to Buenos Aires this time on Nautica from Singapore to Sydney over Christmas. These smallish ship really are excellent, well if you are over forty anyway, no kids, but nothing for kids. The whole dining experience is first class and the two `boutique` type restaurants would hold their own in the West End of London, excellent waiting staff and very knowledgeable sommeliers, mostly young and female, a very good wine list featuring well known labels from across the world. Most interesting and informative lectures, wine tastings and demos. The suites are clean, spacious and most comfortable, with good cabin staff. Entertainment whilst good is not Las Vegas but so what. The cruise director on both cruises was an `elderly`:-) Englishman, was is simply the best I`ve come across in years. On this cruise which was the first time in this area for Oceania the destinations were a little disappointing especially Indonesia and a lot of the tours left something to be desired, we usually take our own which is always cheaper. Fellow passengers on a small ship make a cruise, the majority are Americans. As a smoker you are very limited as to where, in this case on the pool deck. But that`s where the real fun is.
