After having cruised on bigger ships and cruise companies for many years we decided to have a change and opt for this smaller, more exclusive cruise. We weren’t disappointed. The whole experience was luxury and friendliness from start to finish. We were greeted With a warm welcome by Stephanie with a glass of champagne. The whole check in process was seamless and soon we were enjoying an excellent lunch in the Terrazza restaurant. We couldn’t fault the food or service...much better than any of the other cruises we have taken (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival etc). We checked into our lovely cabin at 2pm. Although it is sold as an “all-suite” ship, this cabin was no bigger than I have had before but it was perfectly lovely and I was very happy with the lovely wardrobe and bathroom. Bed very comfy and overall very happy with accommodation. Lorenzo our butler was extremely attentive without being intrusive. He found out our likes (me champagne, husband water) and kept us supplied throughout the cruise without us ever needing to ask). Marlon the cabin attendant kept it pristine again without being intrusive. We dined mostly in the main restaurant and never had a problem getting a table for two (we are a bit antisocial at dinner). Thanks to waiters Ernesto, Jeremy, Murat and Rudolpho and apologies to all the others whose names escape us (too much lovely wine!!) Also thanks to Ana the sommelier who was very knowledgeable and attentive. We didn’t know we had to book for La Terrazza in the evening and turned up. They kindly accommodated us and the food was delicious. Service impeccable. One evening we had the pleasure in dining in La Dame which is the payable restaurant. For $60 per head it was worth it...lovely intimate surroundings and extra special service and food. Thanks to Antione for that! We tried to get in to experience the hot plate dining which we had read about but left it too late so we can’t comment on that. People seemed to like it though as the night we tried there were 15 people on the waiting list. Bar and restaurant service round the pool was excellent and always enough sun beds on offfer. I couldn’t fault the entertainment in any way. The brand new Silverseas Voices had arrived on the ship the same day as us and gave us four evening shows of truly West End quality. I have never seen six such talented energetic performers nor enjoyed the shows so much!! Only one suggestion, they performed most evenings at 10pm which is slightly too late for the likes of us Brits who are still catching up with jet lag. I personally would have preferred them to perform before dining but that’s just me. The two pianists, Sonja and Balazs were fantastically entertaining and extremely talented...thanks to both of them for indulging me in my favorite tunes. A surprising treat was Colin the super Cruise Director just happened to be a concert pianist in a former life and gave us a performance that brought tears to the eyes (in a good way Colin!!) He was so welcoming and friendly and calm in the face of weather adversity which unfortunately happened due to high winds. The Ports we visited had been devastated by the hurricane and it was so sad to see what had happened to these lovely islands and lovely people. I am glad the cruise liners still go into these ports as for some it is the only income from tourism as the hotels have been damaged and closed. We don’t bother with the ships tours and usually get off the ship and see what happens which works for us. We had some great adventures and take with us many lovely memories of these gorgeous islands. Only two things we would have changed. The internet was very expensive for 24hr service. One hour is provided free but this is very slow and somewhat frustrating. The other thing that we hadn’t bargained for was the dress code. This caught my husband out. There are three dress codes...formal, informal and casual. My husband brought his dinner suit for the formal evening and nice shirts and linen trousers for other evenings. Unfortunately we didn’t know that the informal evenings required a jacket so we were a bit stuck. He dressed down his dinner suit with a casual shirt so got away with it but he didn’t feel comfortable. It would have been a good idea for the ship’s shop to stock a couple of jackets for men to buy if they hadn’t read the dress code properly. Other than those niggles it was a wonderful cruise on a small intimate ship with staff who really care. Can’t wait for the next one!! Read Less

This is a great way to see the Galapagos. As I said to the Silversea rep from whom I bought the cruise, "Where else can you act like you are in your 20's during the day's activities and go back to being 70+ when back at the ship?". Caution, however: You do have to be willing to be physically taxed. Getting on to and off the ship is not for disabled, crippled or otherwise challenged individuals, because the very nature of having to get into and out of Zodiacs, which are small bobbly vessels. Staff make doing this as safe and easy as possible, but they are what they are. We were well taken care of, mostly personally, and always well from the time we got out of baggage claim in Guayaquil until the moment we passed through security on our way home. Silversea reps were all uniformly friendly, helpful and efficient. The ship's crew and hotel staff, and the guiding staff as well, were all highly professional and certainly more than willing to go the extra step to making everyone welcome, cared for, happy - and safe - the whole time. The itinerary and daily expedition parts of the cruise were extremely well planned and executed. There was something interesting and new at virtually every stop and several of the guides (Martin, Ernesto, Marco) are absolutely first class. They are intelligent, impart information without fluff or padding, know their stuff thoroughly and guide extremely well. (They also have a pretty good handle on herding cats without letting frustrations show.) On stops, passengers are broken down into Zodiac/guide groups of 14-14 and we always tried to make sure we were with one of these three. (Our experience with one or two of the other guides was indifferent, suggesting they have a bit to learn yet.) Food and drink service was uniformly good, often superior to excellent. Staff get to know you quickly, what you drink and how you like to be treated. And they do so with warmth and aplomb. A few are clearly still learning their trade and sometimes a bit hesitant or flustered, but all are willing and rapidly becoming able. Food also was very good. The breakfast spread is varied, plenteous and more than enough to satisfy anyone's tastes and appetite. Ditto for lunch on the patio and dinner in the dining room, with menus changing daily. You also have the option of reserving a place in The Grill for dinner in the evening, where the menu is a bit more limited, but beautifully served in a great outdoor atmosphere. Roberto, our waiter there was super: Knowledgeable, efficient, always friendly and extremely personable. What else can I say? If I had know that there were two different itineraries, I would have booked for two cruises back to back (i.e., two weeks). It is that good an experience. This is the best way to see the Galapagos for people who like to do things and are also old enough to want to enjoy the experience without hardship or dealing with third-world "adventure" when the day is done. Age doesn't necessarily matter: It is, however, for people who are reasonably fit and adventuresome. If you are relatively young and really fit, you will have a tremendous time snorkelling and kayaking. [One night I had a bit of a stomach upset, and this was mentioned on other days by one or two other people we met. I don't know whether this was just my older body reacting to the desalinated water supply aboard. But it was nowhere near enough to slow me down the next day.] Read Less

All aspects of this cruise went very smoothly. We started in Baltra and ended the cruise in San Cristobal. Siversea's hotel and transfer arrangements prior to and after the cruise were first class. The guides were some of the very best we've encountered. Extremely knowledgeable and very enthusiastic. They were also readily available on the ship to answer questions, share stories or simply engage in pleasant conversation. Onboard the dining was excellent and all the staff were friendly and very helpful with any request large or small. Lunch served on the open 5th deck was especially pleasant with panoramic views of the nearby islands. The Galapagos is a challenging destination and the program was well designed to accommodate people of different ages and physical abilities. This was our first Silversea experience and we will certainly book with this line again. Our fellow passengers were a well traveled group from a wide range of backgrounds and countries. Read Less

We chose this cruise primarily for the itinerary, but also because an acquaintance was actively recruiting people to join her and her husband on their sixth Silversea cruise. She was enthusiastic about the line and spoke highly of the travel agent she has used for many years. We ended up with a group of 18, some who had previously traveled together and others, like us, who were "newbies" to the group and Silversea. We met several times throughout the fall to discuss excursions, dining options and air travel (we flew out of different cities). Our friend coordinated everything with our travel agent and he assured her that all transfers and excursions would be booked and dining reservations made for the whole group (we agreed to meet up every night for dinner at three tables of six). Unfortunately, he died suddenly in mid November. Turns out he worked alone and had not finalized all our plans. She contacted Silversea to explain our situation and they found a travel agency willing to take over and finalize our trip. We arrived in Santiago and found our bus with no problem. Embarkation was a breeze and I was impressed with how quickly the suites were ready. By 2:00 PM, we were in our suite on deck six. The Deluxe Veranda was very nice. We found plenty of hangers, drawer space and a lovely little jewelry box in the safe - very convenient. Bathroom small, but functional. Good water pressure, no issues with hot water. Other guests had trouble with no hot water. We explored the ship and compared it favorably to our last cruise on Regent's Voyager. I thought the color scheme was pretty bland. I referred to it as "Fifty Shades of Taupe," and thought they could have used some pops of color. There is a forward observation lounge, with a smallish library and bar area. We ended up there often for cocktails (fabulous bartender there - Jiro). The main dining area on Deck 7 is La Terrazza and reminded us of La Veranda on Regent. We also scoped out the pool area, fitness center and large area called Dolce Vita, which we would end up visiting frequently, as it is where Team Trivia was played daily. There is only ONE computer available for guests to use. So, if you don't have a laptop or iPad you're stuck with queuing up for that one desktop next to the Concierge desk. All in all, dining proved to be underwhelming. We ate in Kaiseki the first night and didn't realize until we were well into dinner that this was one of the two venues that charge $60/person. No one mentioned this when we were seated, nor was it posted on the menu. That was our mistake. We should have paid attention. The food was good, but was it worth $120 for us? No. Another couple ate in the French venue, La Dame, and were so disappointed they got their account credited. We then ate in Atlantide several times and on one occasion I had to return my soup, as it was very salty and another time returned my prawns, which had the consistency of mush. My husband loves sea bass and would get a good outcome one night and a completely different result the next night. All of us in our large group agreed that Atlantide needs some serious attention. Food quality varied widely, and while service was always pleasant, it was so slow. You could count on a 2.5 to 3 hour dinner. We liked Indochine very much, loved the Hot Rocks. La Terrazzo is probably the best option for dining. Breakfast was always acceptable, especially if you stuck to fresh fruits, omelettes and cereals. Loved the Arts Cafe. Good espresso drinks and I love playing the daily quiz they offered there. The pizza on Deck 11 (Spaccanopli) was good, while the lunch at the Grill again varied widely. I finally learned to ask for something off menu, such as a grilled chicken breast. My husband returned the rueben sandwich as it had almost no corned beef. Hamburgers were very tasteless. Wines were average, the kind of stuff I get at my local grocery store. After awhile we were able to get better wine by asking to try different ones and not just accepting what they were pouring that night. Entertainment was okay, though we only attended a few shows due to the late hour. We did like the piano player in the Silver Note very much, though the dinner there was one of the worst we had. We loved playing Team Trivia with Cruise Director Vicki and enjoyed many of the lectures, though I was disappointed that there were not many on Chile itself. I was hoping for more of a destination expert. Service was always good and the staff is extremely pleasant and well trained. We weren't big on utilizing our Butler, but when we needed her, she was right there. Due to a lot of illness on this cruise, the staff was super diligent about sanitizing and overall cleanliness. Excursions were fair to excellent. The best excursion by far, was the one we organized ourselves, exploring Vina Del Mar and the Casas Del Bosques winery. The best one organized by the cruise line was the Falklands Islands Blue Lagoon tour. Overall Observations: #1. I'll never use a travel agent again who works alone, with no back up assistance. We were lucky that we were able to get another agent at the last minute, but it could have been a disaster. #2. I'm not sold on Silversea. I never once saw officers. Other than the last night when they appeared in the tiny show lounge, they were noticeably absent. On previous cruises, especially on Regent, they are in the dining venues, wandering the ship on sea days, etc....We heard once a day updates from the captain, at noon, but he sounded like he was reading from a script. We asked for a bridge tour and were told they only planned ONE and it was full. The food is NOT locally sourced at all. We asked specifically if we would have local fish and beef from South America and were told everything was brought on board frozen, earlier in the voyage and it was impracticable to have local ingredients. We were amazed that they ran out of Pisco, which is supposedly the national liquor of Chile. They ran out on day two of the cruise and said they had no way to stock it again on the cruise. #3. Value. For the amount we paid, we expected more. Very disappointed with the airfare situation. Only one hour of free WiFi a day? Excursions were pricey and mediocre at best. We organized three on our own and had better outcomes. Food was the biggest disappointment. I think based on our preferences we might either try Viking Ocean next time, or go back to Regent. I'd be curious to see if other Cruise Critic members concur. Read Less

My husband and I choose this cruise because we liked our previous 5 cruises with Silversea and we liked the itinerary which included seeing Orangutans and because it was sailing between two of our favorite cities. We love the Shadow, especially it's size, but it needed to go into dry dock even before we sailed on it 10/16, and, now the ship really requires a major overhaul. The sofa in our cabin was frayed and lumpy. All the deck chairs and tables need replacing. Public rooms need updating. All wood needed a good varnishing, not just the touch up being done. And the library is a disgrace - old books, nothing newer than 2015-16. Service in the dining rooms, particularly at breakfast, has slipped noticeably in the last 15 months as has the quality of the food. Entertainment, except for the night the cruise director performed, bordered on pathetic. That being said we still enjoyed the cruise but unless a future itinerary is outstanding and different we wouldn't sail with them again. Read Less

we enjoyed our trip. Cabin and amenities are good. Service was very good. Where the ship lacked was in food, information and restaurants. Although you had choice in restaurants with different names, all were essentially the same. Menus were different yet the food tasted the same. Preparation was adequate but not interesting. Ship entertainment was less than inviting. Voices of Silversea were well below what can be had in the outside world and not worthy of listening. Lectures were well informed yet were light in substance and not as informative as they should be with relation to our country visits and lack of detail was evident. They were ok but you should expect more. All in all it was a lovely trip but I would think that given the international audience and apparent success and costs to the clients, management should reach further given style and life going on in cities across the world. We wanted to go between Singapore and Hong Kong on the southern route, having 'done' the northern on other lines. We were only interested in a true luxury cruise and while we read Silversea's blurb on "ultra luxury" we thought that perhaps half was true and the other half publicity hype, but it would be better than average. Wrong!!! It was 3/4 hype and 1/4 reality, so of the three lines on the route, this was the poorest - and the most expensive.. First the good bits. ALL the restaurant and housekeeping staff - with one minor exception, a sour-faced girl behind the food counter in the Terrace, - were great and as Silversea have a wonderful no tipping policy, they are not doing it for immediate reward. The food was edible but a bit boring, but edible is a plus. The so-called 'La Dame' restaurant, (with a $60 entry fee) was ok, but FAR from Haute Cuisine. The other issue with La Dame was that they had changed the name of the restaurant and failed to change the signs. Silversea boast of their tie to Relais et Chateaux, but why? R et C are just a glorified hotel booking agency, they own no hotels, no restaurants and while a great booking system are nothing to do with "good food". The restaurants in the R et C guide have all paid to be in there and as such R & C cannot be impartial. The main restaurant is in the bowels of the earth on deck 4 and we only visited it once when we were invited to a staff table. The food in the terrace on deck 7 was fair but very boring. They had a different "fish of the day", but as they cooked every fish the same way, it was hard to identify them. Room service was fine, but did not live up to the hype with all courses brought together as most lines do, so all except the first course was cold and any ice cream melted. The wine list was good and very drinkable wine was included at every meal, except breakfast of course; this was very definite plus!. The Captain was not a native English speaker and coupled with a dreadful sound system, his broadcasts were mainly unintelligible. Even worse was the Australian tour person who described each coming port. It soon became a competition to see how many times she described each place using the exact same words and the exact same flat tone. We were promised "Opera" selections as entertainment by the singers. They started off well with La Traviata and Don Giovanni but soon went back into pop type music, but at least it was Italian pop. Knowing the issue of poor shows, we take a selection of opera and ballet DVD's, but the TV sound was so bad that even this was not an easy escape for us.. We had two lecturers aboard, one was wonderful being an ex-BBC newsreader, but the other while being a clear expert had poor presentational skills, but there were so few 'talks' that even a poorly presented one was better than nothing. Silversea seem to forget that most people who can afford their prices are OLD or VERY OLD and tours or excursions that require lots if walking should be balanced by ones that have little strenuous activity. There were 4 hour private car trips available at a couple of places, but at eye-watering prices, for the other places we simply stayed on the boat. While we were in one of the most expensive suites, it was not a good choice as being right at the front, any poor seas were magnified in pitch by the length of the boat turning about its centre of mass - a silver suite in the midship section would have been more comfortable- and a lot cheaper. Was excited to travel on this new cruise ship. As usual, great service. But there are some issues. Indochine is a worthless restaurant and not worth the time. Atlantine is wonderful and the best of all options, although one night we were turned away because no tables available for a group of 6--even if we were willing to split up. None of the restaurants that charge more are worth it. La Dame is good and so is Keiseki but we opted out since they certainly weren't worth the extra cost. Best choice is Keiseki for lunch. Incredible sushi. Love breakfast at La Terraza and dinner there is pretty good. The Grill for dinner is predictable, but given weather was an issue (cold) so not a good option. Rooms are great. Butlers were very helpful. Tours in ports were mediocre to poor. But the ports themselves were kind of boring. Loved the Falkland Islands but arranged our own tour which was the same as the cruise tour and $100 cheaper per person (plus it was only for us--no bus!). Entertainment was incredible. The singers are wonderful. The lectures were also great. Worth attending. Cruise director was fun. So on board experience was good. Fitness center is too small and needs more bikes! Read Less

My wife and I wanted to see Chile and Argentina. We had actually previously scheduled a trip on another cruise line a few years ago but a serious illness of a family member caused us to cancel. Subsequently, several friends recommended SilverSea. They are absolutely correct. The Silver Muse is as good as it gets. Our cabin [suite] was beautiful, very good size, had a walk in closet, a great bathroom with a stall shower and soaking tub. There are two TVs built into large mirrors, a nice sitting area and a large veranda. Service was outstanding with an excellent Butler and an excellent maid. Dining is great with nine restaurants, most of which were superb. My only complaint is why there is an extra fee for two of them when those two are no better than the others. Liquors and wines were uniformly excellent. Bar service again excellent. In Dolce Vita, Anwar, a server was amazing. The pool area is fine and very comfortable. Night entertainment is quite good. I do think the lectures should be more oriented to the ports and what is notable about them. Our only negative is that sometimes leaving the ship for a tour was total chaos. Most excursions were fun and quite good. The exceptions being horrendous food service in Coyhaique City and initially in the hotel in Santiago. Our additional complaint is the Check In at the Park Tower in Buenos Aires. In every other way the hotel is fine though it could use some renovation. Read Less

We have sailed the Silver Wind before, but this time the crew was even better. Our service was outstanding. The itinerary was disappointing and several of the islands should have been totally skipped, but the service, food and overall experience was worth it. Our butler, Lori, was outstanding. Our room attendant was great! Our servers in every restaurant and every service area were second to none. There were so noted outstanding servers but Michael was among the best. The food was outstanding with a great variety every single day. The entertainment nightly was also outstanding. They performed at high levels no matter what the venue. The various guides and on shore help made things very simple and easy. We can't say enough about the ship, the crew, the way they make you feel at home, yet at the highest level of service you can imagine. We have stayed all over the world and in some of the finest hotels. Silversea service meets or exceeds that service in every way. Read Less
