Silversea markets itself as a high end luxury liner and for the most part it meets its hype. People joining Grand Voyages part way through, hoping on and off after a few days and discount cruisers tend to bring down the luxury experience. The Muse is a well-designed ship for intimate cruising with nicely designed suites, multiple restaurants, bars and open spaces to relax. The suites are spacious, nicely decorated and kept spotless by well-trained attendants. With eight restaurants, serving a variety of foods; Japanese, Indochine fusion, Italian, Grill, Atlantide seafood & steaks, pizzeria, Silver Note night club. Atlantide best for seafood, Grill for steaks there are always good dishes on the menu at whichever location you chose. La Dame has two sittings, neither time acceptable to us . Atlantide is compact and intimate conversation impossible. Overall food was good with attentive service. Arts cafe is a delightful coffee boutique offering coffees, alcohol and a varying selection of food offerings during the day. Late night chocolate was always good. Sommeliers offer good variety of global house wines to meet personal choice. Six bars, two main Dolce Vita and Panorama offer a good selection of premium liquor, wines and champagne. The Servers are friendly and know your drink choice without asking after a few days. The Pool bar is good during the day and evening for drinks and coffee. Other bars in Atlantide, Silver Note, and Indochine. The Pool area is the hub of daily activities on two decks. Shade is at a premium as sitting area for the Grill occupy much of the shade. Plenty of quiet spots away from the pool area. The Entertainment is not a strength of Silversea, except Trivia with Jimmy. Enrichment lecturers were variable but David Horner was excellent, Mark Elovitz and Bill Miller good. We had a great voyage and have booked for next year. Silversea continues to be our first choice for cruising. Read Less

Pros: 1. Butler that looks after your needs 2. They clean the cabins twice a day so you always feel your room is fresh 3. You can get room service anytime if you are hungry 4. Cabins are good size Cons: 1. There is limited choices of deserts/ candy 2. Not much entertainment offered to guests. We tried to play bingo and it took only 15 min from the start to finish. 3. The gym is very small. 10 people make it really crowded 4. Our booking agent never told us that we have free shore excursions with silver sea that come with our package. We discovered it accidently 2 days before the end of the cruise. 5. I had a problem to log in to the internet. I went to the reception desk and asked for help. The girl at the reception took my phone and erased the full history and website data from my phone! The internet connection has nothing to do with website data so i really dont know why did she do such a horrible thing. I was devastated as i kept very important information there that i was collecting for over 1year and its all gone now. Read Less

After reading a number of mixed reviews, I had lowered my expectations going in, but was pleasantly surprised. Everything was clean and comfortable and relatively efficient. Although we had slight concern initially that the linens appeared to not have been changed after a few days, since I noticed the same blood stain from my husband’s-cut on his finger. Although the linens did not smell, I assumed it was the same stain. I asked the front desk how often they changed them( I certainly didn’t want them changed everyday) , they said every other day, that seemed unlikely. However after my inquiry, they seemed to change them every other day, which was unnecessary, every 3 days would have been sufficient. I was a little upset that our cabin attendant notified us he was leaving the ship in Hiroshima and a new attendant would be taking his place. I asked him if he was leaving because of my inquiry, he said no , he was scheduled to leave for 2 weeks before we arrived, but his replacement was delayed due to obtaining visa, so he stayed on until his replacement arrived. He said his next assignment was on the Whisper, so no worries. I just hope that was the truth, because if he was in trouble because of my inquiry that would have upset me to no end. He was very good, our room was always cleaned well and early. After he left, our room always seemed to be the last one done on sea days , even though my parents room right next to ours was done long before ours. Oh well I don’t understand the negative comments about the food. I thought the food was very good and on par with Oceania which had been our go to cruise line prior to Silverseas. I wa not thrilled with the hamburgers at the grill at lunch, but overall I thought the food , selection and presentation were well done. The steaks especially were very good, note we like medium well and were not disappointed. We preferred the main dining room, la terrazza was also very good, but menu did not change that often. The room was comfortable and loved the walk in closet. I would say the suite (vista) was better than Oceania’s concierge level. The tv worked better than expected even out at sea, however the selection of movies was limited. although there is a DVD player, you can bring your own since their library collection may not be to your liking, at least it was not for us. They did have most cable news stations, even MSNBC( since Fox News for 15 days was not an option for us! ) and ESPN . I liked the separate workout room with free weights and a good area to do my own aerobic workout. The overall condition of the ship was good, although there were areas of the ship that may have needed some light maintenance, it was in areas that most people would not be traversing on routine basis. I would definitely recommend Silverseas although not sure if we will travel with them unless there is a good price, like we received on this one, and the itinerary is of interest. We were ok with the formal policy, but prefer not to drag that extra luggage with us. A great trip overall. Read Less

I returned to Silversea after four years (having been unable to travel in that time) and as a solo traveller for the first time - it was like coming home, from the initial warm welcome, the brilliant service, superb food (much improved since last time), lovely butler service (thank you Gideon), as much champagne as I could drink - yes Silver Shadow is a little tired in places but it is still very much a five star experience. With only once exception the on shore tours were well organised and good value. I didn't bother with the solo travellers get together after the first night as it was so easy to get to know people and I didn't have a single evening where I needed to eat on my own. The joy of small ship cruising! It was good to see some old faces on board like Kirk the Cruise Director and Anita Labs on the shore concierge desk - and lots of passengers were booking future cruises which proves to me that Silversea are still doing things right for their discerning customer base. Every meal was a challenge Relais & Chateau should be embarrassed. The bagels and croissants at breakfast were worse than the lowest grade . Maybe you could find similar at the Dollar Store. The pancakes in la Terasse were served with fake maple syrup. Room service had small bottles of real maple syrup, but the pancakes were like rubber and thick. The waffles were also 3/4 of an inch thick and tough! It was like a comedy..You could have thrown the pancakes like a frisbee. The vacuumed packed individual portions of various fishes had been left in the brine solution so long they were inedible. Even the dining room manager who finally tasted it agreed. The lamb chops were so tough it was like sawing wood. This was true even in Le Dame. The smoked salmon was of poor quality. All fish except the Dover Sole was either extremely salty or mushy.. The texture was completely missing or both. One lunch there was a beautiful whole salmon cooked with the skin on. When it was cut the insides were just like a very wet sponge or mush! The gnocchi was fine if made fresh by the chef to order, but what was served to everyone was a pasty , glob. The bread sticks were not crisp. The only good food on the ship was in the movie on the television. The meat also seemed to be pre seasoned in a vacuum pack. It was impossible to read the labels on these prepackaged portions since they were de boxed down below the kitchen.. The staff was wonderful and responsive....but they had no quality ingredients to work with!!!!!! The itinerary was the inducement, but we had to charter a helicopter for $1900.00 to go to Corregidor because the ship could not dock in time to connect toa boat that makes the trip from Manilla. This was just poor planning not an accident. The ship was supposed to have arranged a special schedule with the boat. They did not inform us of the problem until the day before the scheduled tour. The orangutan visit at Sabah was a disappointment. It was a very poor zoo with 400 onlookers in a limited space. At the very least the ship ought to go there in the afternoon when it is not so crowded. On the other hand the orangutan viewing at Sarawak was much better, The whole operation was more professional and geared to preservation of this endangered species. There were more animals in a more natural habitat and many fewer tourists. The thermostat in the room has no control..You have to turn it to heat to get it to cool. It has no fan control. They finally opened the ceiling and closed off the vent that blew like wind in the ceiling over the head of the bed. The shower also had no control over temperature. It changed every 30 seconds unpredictably hotter or colder. Could never get the doors to the veranda to open without two people pulling on it. Read Less

Our overall impression of the Silver Whisper was amazing. The services were excellent. We had a wonderful butler and maid. The attention to every detail made us feel very special. The food was amazing and all our waiters were quite efficient as well as entertaining. The ports were places we never dreamed of seeing and experiencing. We would definitely recommend the Silver Seas. The only comment on the negative side would be that our ship did not have a gift shop for sundry items and logo wear from Silver Seas. The gifts shop on board carried lovely specialized gifts and apparell. We particularly enjoyed the two shows that were scheduled earlier in the evening (6:45 pm). We found it difficult to stay up for show at 10pm after having such wonderful dinners. Our excursions took us to the places we really wanted to see. Some had extensive travel in the vans but could not be helped. Read Less

You can relax or stay as busy as you desire. Everything is included so that you do not need to worry about extra costs or tipping except if you take an excursion. Embarkation and disembarkation is smooth and seamless. What a wonderful experience. We have experienced Silverseas prior to this one that went to Southeast Asia. Already we are planning to take the entire family away next year. i want my family to experience luxury on the sea, while staying in shape, eating with great options and experiencing the world with excursions. For us, Hong Kong is always worth a visit and starting a cruise there seemed a good idea. Departing from the Ocean Terminal in Hong Kong was a fantastic and unforgettable experience. The itinerary of this cruise through the South China Sea was very attractive. Manila, Coron, Porto Princessa, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, Brunei and Singapore. Only Manila we found disappointing, despite its beautiful location; but all the other landfalls were amazing and worth the visit. The Silver Shadow could use some renovation, but the crew makes up for this in providing an outstanding service. Butler service couldn't be better and the food in the different restaurants was really good. The french food and beverage manager, Nicolas Longin, was very much present and it showed. We both are vegetarian and had no problems finding something delicious. One advantage of the Shadow being an older ship, its bathrooms still have two sinks and handy single lever mixers for comfortable control over dosing and tempering the water. The furniture in the suites look worn and the old flat tv's should be replaced; for us personally, this is not a problem, as we always turn the tv off. We rate this cruise excellent for its crew, the food and most importantly for the small number of passengers. This is getting more difficult, even Silver Sea ships get bigger; more and bigger doesn't sound better to us. We prefer and love the smaller vessels with fewer passengers. Read Less

I chose this cruise to join a family group. It was my 6th cruise but first on Silversea. It was the best cruise ever. The service, crew and entertainment was outstanding. I loved the smaller venue which allowed us to get to know the other guests and staff. This made the time on board very friendly and personable. I felt so welcomed and special from the time we boarded until we disembarked. The prepaid tours were excellent giving us an excellent insight at all sites. Sue the excursion director was helpful in last minute changes which allowed us to see the super bowl and not miss a tour that was top on our list. The cruise director Mr Moss went out of his way to advise us on the availability of watching the super bowl. His personal show was one of the best performances. However it should be presented on a night at sea so you can’t miss it. We came in at the end after attending a fabulous on ground evening excursion. Kennan our butler went above and beyond to serve us. I miss him so much!!!! The entertainment had something for everyone. There were activities I missed only because of enjoying the spa or pool or just laughing with new found friends. I can’t wait to sail again on Silversea!!,, Read Less

We chose this particular cruise due to its itinerary. Due to some negative reviews I was becoming increasingly concerned regarding the ships presentation. I should not have worried, the ship was in my view well presented, yes, it is showing some wear, however like a good bottle of wine is is aging well. The ships restaurants provided a varied menu, our favourite was however ‘Hot Rocks’ the cuts of meat were excellent, it was a great experience, so much so that out of our 9 night voyage we ate there 5 times. The ships crew at this venue were outstanding in particular Glenn, who ensured our glasses were always full and we wanted for nothing. We had thee points of call on this trip, all of which offered differing experiences, the highlight being Ho Chi Minh city which was a pleasant and immersive assault on the senses. The cruise director Moss was excellent, keeping the guests informed as to the days acrivities, he was both personable and was always interacting with the guests. On the formal night I noticed that I had forgotten to bring my shirt studs with me. To my relief Moss kindly found some suitable alternatives. The only down side of this cruise was having to leave the ship in Singapore. Would I sail Silversea again? ...absolutely. Would I sail on Silver Shadow....without hesitation. Read Less

We had previously taken the Silver Whisper from New York to Bermuda and liked the Silversea product, so we booked the Silver Shadow. We were supposed to depart from Tokyo, but a Tsunami caused Silversea to change the departure port to Inchon, South Korea and we visited Seoul also at that time. Silversea had to cancel all the Japan ports and allowed booked passengers to cancel if they wished, but if they stayed which we did they offered a 1/2 price cruise on a future trip which we did on the Silver Cloud. On the cruise many passengers had cancelled, but we had a light ship. Silversea is a fine cruise line and I think Celebrity realized it so formed Azamara as an answer to Silversea with its personalized service. As a thank you for keeping the booking, Silversea furnished a private car transfer to the Seoul Grand Hotel and furnished us a three step cost free upgrade at the hotel. We had a bus ride from the hotel to the port and didn't even sit down but walked straight to the check in counter and on to the ship with our cabin key. The Silver shadow brought us to Petropavlovsk, Russia on the Kamchatka Peninsula and then we visited the Aleutians, Dutch harbor, Kodiak and Homer. Our cabin was mid range and on the pool deck and very nice and roomy. Read Less

Far east cruise offers wonderful ports of call. Previously we had travelled with Silversea to Antarctica and had a 5 STAR experience. This was the main draw for our choosing Silversea once again. Unfortunately, the Silver Shadow is in desperate need of a trip to dry dock. She is showing her age. Extremely challenging to control stateroom's temperature. Either too hot or too cold were the options. This was a complaint heard throughout the ship on this cruise. Carpeting is showing much wear, walls are scratched, but these cosmetic issues are visual only. There are not enough electrical outlets in the staterooms. NO USB Charging ports whatsoever. If you are travelling, bring along a massive extension cord that allows for multiple plugs. Service by the room staff was impeccable. Fabulous butler and maid. Food was a disappointment. Utterly unable to order decaf coffee in the morning and have it arrive before finishing half of breakfast, A DAILY Occurance. Most disappointing was totally skipping a port. Danang did have some rain and Vietnam did have some limitations on accessing it's port due to APEC meeting. BUT this was on the books for months . No excuse for not having a plan other than floating at sea for and extra 36 hours. Really, overall a nice trip. Just I can't say this was a 5 or even a four star experience. Read Less

This ship is in serious need of a refreshment. It is very tired and worn. The art work looks like something from a second hand shop and is drab and dull. The food was mediocre at best. The La Dame restaurant was a total waste. The tours on the two back to back cruises we took (Hong Kong to Singapore and Singapore to Sydney) were not well vetted and the itinerary on the second cruise was poorly chosen. No overnights in the major ports and stops at very small remote towns. We will not sail on Silver Sea again as most of the guests on our cruise that we socialized with. The Italian influence here is so out of touch with what people want. The formal nights inflicted on the guests is so ridiculous, only a few people wanted to dress in their kilts or high school dinner jackets. There should be an alternative besides dining in you room. People are on vacation so don't be so worried about shorts in common areas after 6 PM! Read Less

We have sailed Silversea a number of times and love the on board experiences, the suites, the food, drinks, and, especially the service. We booked this one as back to back so we were on for an extended time. Our prior experiences with Silversea was on the Wind and the Cloud which we absolutely loved. The size was near perfect for our tastes and our next cruise will again be on either of those. The Shadow is just slightly larger than our preference so that is the principal reason. We note that several people have commented on the ship looking weary, I would have to agree with that but, it’s nothing that can’t be remedied. Otherwise, it was all good. I can’t speak highly enough of the service and also the Cruise Director on board. We have sailed over 35 times and Kirk was the best Cruise Director ever. The entertainment was perfect for us. One criticism is the lounge chairs were “staked out” way too early and that made it very inconvenient especially for people who have a low tolerance for the sun. That didn’t happen on the Cloud or the Wind, perhaps because of the smaller size Read Less

My cousin, Alec Graham, had cruised several times with Silversea, and he asked us to accompany him and his wife on the cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore, which we did. It was a terrific experience, as my cousin and other friends of ours predicted. The ship was perfect in comfort and seaworthiness, the cabin comfortable and lacking nothing at all, the steward well-trained and very affable, the food very good in all the restaurants. On the sailing and entertainment side, the crew was always accessible and helpful, the entertainment program top quality with crew members doing a super job singing and dancing, and outside talents first rate, and the theater is very good in layout and acoustics. Finally, the shore excursions support group was definitely up to the challenges they faced on a daily basis, transportation vehicles and Immigration paperwork were no problem, and the restaurants chosen were very good as well. Wanted to see Asia for the first time, we were on this phone two months after it was launched in, South America. I can remember the services being some of the best I've ever had told my friends it was just like eating at a fine restaurant we're staying at a luxury hotel, those things have change drastically, most restaurants were hard to get into if not impossible, waitstaff varied from being Very good to not knowing what they were doing at all. My wife and I will continue to search for ship that meets our expectations. Suggestions would be that the Service is improved through better training of the people in charge of the guests, you should do away with the reservations on the restaurants, many restaurants were not filled to capacity, and the excuse was we did not have enough waitstaff to appropriately serve the extra tables , therefore we did not Seat them, Read Less

We recently completed a 14 day cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore. The itinerarywas great as it took us to Vietnam, Thailand and terminated in Singapore. Before booking this cruise I specifically asked if the ship had been refurbished and was assured that indeed it had been. However, Silversea uses this word differently than most people on our cruise as the dated decor was the common unifying topic amongst the guests. It was extremely disappointing as the interior is in serious need of modernization; the color scheme, the upholstery, the furnishings and the carpet all need work. The attention to detail that used to distinguish Silversea appears to have disappeared. Gone is the champagne waiting in your suite when you arrive, the orchid is left in it's plastic container and stuffed into a too small ceramic pot so balances precariously. The food on board was equivalent to mediocre hotel banquet fare. A number of the included shore excursions were not worth the time. A visit to the Artist Village in Ho Chi Minh City was so bad that one bus load from the ship convinced their tour guide to return them to the ship ahead of schedule, while others from the ship called taxis to take them back to the ship rather than waiting for the tour to be over. I understand the guests who took the Ko Samui Jeep Tour had an equally unsatisfactory experience as well. Not sure I'm going to rush back to Silversea but instead will try some of it's competitors as it appears Silversea has lost it's way. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We explored our departure and ariival cities on our own. We used some of the ship's excursions and also those provided by Abercrombie & Kent. The ship definitely needs to be refurbished - it's old and tired looking. The gym, spa and beauty parlor also needs to be modernized. Our cabin was nice and spacious - just a bit dark and very small veranda that needed to be better maintained. The TV in the room didn't work well and the ship should provide more than 1 hour of wifi service per day. The food and service in Main Dining Room was very good. La Terraza restaurant was OK and the buffets offered during the day were mediocre. Room service was very good!! Our meal in Le Champagne was outstanding! The evening in La Terraza on the 19th featuring the visiting French chef was excellent! The Grill during lunch was OK but the wait staff were frequently overwhelmed with the number of guests to serve. The SilverSea singers were very talented and enjoyable, the pianist, Nataliia was excellent but the guitarist/singer Charlie's repertoire was not current. The girls in the Beauty Parlor should speak better English. Our wait staff were all great as were the butler and his assistant. The Concierges need more training on what if offered in the Ports of call. It's time for the Cruise Director to retire. We would go again perhaps on a newer ship. Read Less

This was the last voyage before taking the ship to dry dock to refurbish it. The refurbishment should have been done five years ago! The rugs were stained, the toilets didn't work, the rooms were shabby. All of the passengers were complaining. In addition, they were understaffed. The service was terrible! It took an hour to get a cup of cappuccino at breakfast. I got severe food poisoning on the last night and vomited and had diarrhea all night long. I notified our butler, who did not seem to care. My wife said "This is NOT a luxury cruise line." We have sailed on Seabourn and Regeant multiple times. We will stick with them. Silversea should be ashamed of themselves for sailing this ship in it's terrible condition. They told us they are the "number one luxury cruise line." This is a lie. NEVER AGAIN!!!!! I would never have submitted this critique, but after writing a letter to Mark Conroy, Director of America's, and receiving no reply, I decided to write an online review. Let me begin by saying that my husband and I travel extensively both independently and with private guides. We have also enjoyed many cruises (Regency, Oceania, Holland, Princess) and have always returned home happy and looking forward to our next adventure. This trip to Southeast Asia was our first experience with Silversea, and we specifically chose the cruise for two reasons. First, the itinerary was appealing and fit our interests, and second, we wanted a luxury line with whom we could begin to establish a loyalty program. Based on our experience, it is highly unlikely that we will be doing so with Silversea. The cruise was average and surpising for a luxury cruise line. The absolute plus was the service we received from our butler, Mark, our cabin steward, Jesus, and one of the waiters in The Restaurant, Jessie. They could not have been more pleasant, professional and helpful. However, for such a small ship, the service from the rest of the staff could only be described as dysfunctional at best. Pool side service was non-existent. There were plenty of wait staff around, but it was beyond difficult to receive any type of service from them. One afternoon my husband asked for a glass of water twice, and he never received it. On a few other occasions, I tried to get the waiter’s attention to place a simple drink order, and until I stood up and waived, or called out, I was ignored. I observed other guests in the same situation. Our one and only meal at the Grill was so frustrating that we never went back. The wine steward informed us that she was completely out of white wine. It took the persistence of our waiter, and forty plus minutes before I was able to enjoy a glass of wine. Our entire experience on the ship felt like there was a complete disconnect in the overall service quality. Let me end by saying that the sites we visited along the way were incredible. The guests we met on board, and the people we met in the countries we visited were lovely. The food on the ship was good, the portions the perfect size. And again, we cannot say enough about the wonderful service and attention we received from Mark, Jesus, and Jessie. Other than that, there was a huge gap in service and attention to detail. Read Less

We are seasoned cruisers and after an extraordinary Silverseas Cruise to the Galapagos in March we wanted to try their more mainstream cruise style. CHECK-IN The check in was seamless, there were more than enough staff to process everyone without delay. A great opening memory. BUTLER Since we had bulters on other cruises (Oceania) we were prepared on how to use their services and Albert lived up to our expectations. He was available within minutes of our request for service. He exceeded delivery for room service, made and cancelled reservations without hesitation and kept the refrigerator and ice bucket filled. It felt like he was our own private butler even though we knew that he served more than our suite. DINING The Restaurant (yes, that's the name of the main dining room is called the restaurant) delivered impeccable service. The menu selection was robust and regardless of breakfast, lunch or dinner the service levels remained high. FORMAL NIGHTS There were 2 formal nights during our trip and those of us who did not want to dress up had little choices as to where we could go and eat/drink. This was probably one of the negatives of Silversea. In addition to 2 formal nights, all but 2 evenings informal meaning that jackets were required for men and dresses/pantsuits for women. The average temperature in Asia was 90 degrees so dressing up seemed overkill and antiquated. This was a disappointment of the trip. LA TERRAZZA This venue was used during the day for lunch and breakfast with outside seating available BUT in the evening they shut off the outside deck, pulled the blinds and transformed the restaurant into an Italian Restaurant. I would have preferred to have the option to eat on the outside deck. Oceania Cruises does have that option which is a plus for Oceania. SHORE EXCURSIONS Many of the shore excursions were part of the price of the cruise. However, there were two paid evening excursions that included local entertainment and dinner. THEY WERE SPECTACULAR! LOGO WEAR A major disappointment was the lack of anything with a Silversea logo on it. No shirt, no baseball cap, no water bottles, nothing. When asked, we were told that others have also requested it but "Corporate didn't believe in it." To bad, a great marketing opportunity that they chose not to use. WOULD WE GO AGAIN? Possibly...I liked the small ship, the service but formal nights and no baseball cap has us looking at other options too. Read Less

So I chose EXCELLENT over VERY GOOD because it was in between. Here are a few of the highlights. Silver Shadow - Second time on the ship. We did Alaska in May. Yes, SS is a bit tired, but still ranked #14 in the world. Veranda cabins are spacious and have....verandas. Went to dry dock for two weeks when we got off at Singapore. Personally, I love the ship. Loyalty Program - My #1 beef with Silversea. You want me to give you $20,000 a year in advance for a 5% discount? What? I'm from Las Vegas where loyalty is REWARDED. 20% discount would have my interest, but there are far too many alternatives in the cruise industry to pay a year in advance for 5%. And what about my casino play? And $5,000 in shore excursions? No reward for that either. And the fact I have multiple cruises with you. I like Silversea, however I'll be shopping the next couple of trips to other providers. Shore Excursions - Silversea needs a system so customers can rate the shore excursions. All we have is the promo material provided by Silversea. And they need to be more selective with their Tour Guides. We had a couple that was supposed to be our Tour Guide one night. Instead of splitting up in the two vans, the rode together and left us on a busy street corner in Ho Chi Minh. Thanks. F&B - Read all the comments. I would agree. It's hit and miss. Liked "Restaurant" on level four for lunch, Le Champagne is consistent ($40 upcharge), La Terazza is just OK. Desserts were below par. Waited close to an hour for food at The Grill. Smoking and Drinking - Smoking is reserved for The Humidor and a couple specific areas on the boat, yet we saw people smoking on the deck of La Terazza. I smoke cigars, so no issues from me, but several customers were complaining. Drinking is fine if people don't turn it into a Carnival drunken cruise fight. We had a bad experience out by the pool. Some folks brought a radio and were blasting it as they got hammered on Tequila. And I do mean hammered. Silversea is lucky they did not fall on the pool deck and crack their heads. Boo! Kids - I have no issues with kids being on the boat, however they need to act appropriately and abide by the dress code. Several teenagers boarded at one of the ports. Guessing they were related to the crew. First they are running up and down the halls. I get it...they are happy to be here. Then they show up at the show later in beachwear. Heard several guests mumbling about it. Drunk Guests, Part 2 - Remember the fools above that got liquored and were disruptive at the pool? They showed up the next day for an early tour looking three shades of green. Ain't alcohol grand? Did I mention they were 15 minutes late, so 40 of us got to sit in the heat and humidity waiting for them. If guest are late...LEAVE THEM. Then they bailed on the tour halfway through and took a taxi back to the ship. For 12 days, every time I saw them, they were drinking. Hey, try the Carnival next time. Shore Excursions, Part 2 - Had one other issue with the tours. We took the Perfume River tour in Vietnam and it was non-stop soliciting. At the first rest stop and for the entire river cruise. It's one thing to have a merchandise table, it's something completely different to have a floating swap meet with people in your face the whole time trying to sell you t-shirts. Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore - We truly enjoyed the trip. Vietnam and Thailand are outstanding. Specifically, Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok. I'm posting this on TripAdvisor and CruiseCritic and sending it to the executives at Silversea as well. Not complaining or judging, just to help them enhance their service levels. Read Less

Itinerary and the reputation of SilverSea were our reasons for choosing this cruise. The itinerary was all we hoped for; the older ship and its management less so, based on flooded cabins. Embarkation in Hong Kong and debarkation in Tokyo were handled very well: easy, lots of direction and help, punctual. Our suite was sizable, with a walk-in closet that was very welcome. Staff service at all venues, and our butler, were outstanding. The food was good, though not as good as Oceania. Entertainment was good, but limited; the cruise director did double duty as a singer/comedian, and was actually not bad. One good lecturer, one mediocre. We noticed immediately, however, that the ship was in need of work: e.g., the deck railings were in serious need of varnish. Later we learned this ship is due to be "retired" next year, which may explain possible deferred maintenance. The problem arose on day 10 of the 16 day cruise, when we encountered high winds and heavy seas. That can happen. But this older ship was simply not "ship shape." Dozens of staterooms--our deck 5 starboard was the worst hit--were flooded by wind-swept rain and ocean spray that leaked through the veranda door seals, soaking the carpets (and some clothing and under-bed suitcases). That continued for at least 12 hours, with no solution offered to stop the leaks and no official communications from the captain. Inconceivably, very little, and nothing effective, was done over the remaining five days of the cruise as the soaked cabins became uninhabitable from the smell alone. We were offered downgraded accommodations (no balcony), but had to insist on getting some help moving. Even that cabin had a leaking window. No announcements by the captain, no meetings with ship officers, no remedial plans presented and no offers of help. Silversea, after several weeks, finally offered us (but apparently not others), a very modest and restricted credit toward a future cruise, hardly proportionate to the number of days we had no use of our suite. Amazing, and disappointing, for a high-end cruise line. My ratings below are for the first 10 days, before the ship and its crew were tested by stormy weather. For the last week of this cruise, most of these ratings would have been negative. I can only hope those sailing on the Silver Shadow this year enjoy good weather, and that at least the Deck 5 suites have been stripped and refurbished while in port. Read Less
