This was our first cruise with Silversea (my first with any line) but will not be our last. We felt pampered and enjoyed our meals consistently throughout the 7 days. The ship and our cabin were bright and clean. The staff were cheerful and polite. We were fortunate to have sunny and fairly warm weather in Alaska throughout our cruise. Going in September we were concerned a bit about this, but it turned out great. Breakfast in LaTerrazza gets the day off to a great start. It is a buffet type arrangement with an incredible assortment of fresh fruit, breads (sweet rolls were irresistible to one of us, ok, I tried them all), eggs, cereals, cold cuts, cheeses, juices and more. Coffee is served at your table, and it is possible to order a custom breakfast from there as well. The lunch buffet is also excellent, but don't pass up the superb pizza at Spaccanapoli or the wide selection of lunch choices at the Grille. Dinner in Atlantide and Indochine were both superb, out of the many dinner orders between us, only one was disappointing. Not sure why DW decided to order vegetarian that night... Entertainment was fine, the performers are enthusiastic and talented. The musicians playing in various locations around the ship were very good. Vlad, a guitarist/vocalist, caught our attention while we were walking about. We sat down and enjoyed an excellent set of music while being served the fine included-in-fare sauvignon blanc. Our favorite excursion was whale watching out of Juneau. We were perhaps lucky in seeing about 10 whales, but the guides seemed confident we'd find them from the outset. Embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze. A vigorous hike and river float ride in Skagway also made for a great day. The ship had an unexpected technical issue after we boarded causing us to stay in Vancouver the first day, and so we missed our Ketchikan stop. Silversea provided free excursions to Vancouver and a cash credit on a future cruise, which we considered fair compensation. As the rest of the cruise went so well, the issue was evidently fully resolved. We are happy to give overall 5 stars for a truly memorable cruise! Read Less

My lifelong motto has been that I hate the idea of cruising. The hoards of people, the mass quantity of low quality food, the tiny rooms, and silly excursions. I’ve been on two short cruises to appease family before, and just didn’t like it. Well, when my other half suggested taking a luxury cruise through Alaska, I was not a fan of the idea. But, after watching a few videos, reading a few reviews and realizing he wasn’t kidding, we booked the Silversea’s Silver Muse 7 day Alaska cruise that started right before Labor Day weekend. The thought of the Butler Service, the suite with a bathtub and a balcony of our own, I had high hopes, but was very worried that my distaste for cruising would taint my experience. Spoiler Alert - I loved Silversea and would cruise with them again. This doesn’t feel like cruising - its luxury living. We booked the train transfer from Anchorage to Seward, and when I learned about the timeline of this, I was not pleased. First, the train didn’t leave until noon or later, so you wouldn’t get on the boat until after 5pm. Luckily for me, there was flooding on the railway tracks so they shut down the train, and we were instead going by motor coach, which meant we’d get to the ship by 2pm. I was so glad, so in hindsight, I’d recommend the bus transfer (or getting to Seward on your own), just so you can have a light lunch after embarkation on board and spend time wandering around the boat, checking things out. The boat is exactly as everyone else has described - contemporary, modern and new. The suite exceeded our expectations - I mean, who has a full size bath on a boat? The bed was extremely comfortable. I read that people didn’t like the way the TV worked. We loved it, because we could look at the restaurant menus, read about the next destination, watch videos of different cruises, and occasionally watch a movie or documentary. Why would anyone actually watch TV on vacation?? The butler service was outstanding. We became accustomed to breakfast in our room daily, along with a bottle of champagne waiting for us each afternoon. We were well taken care of, but it wasn’t intrusive at all. We only used the gym twice during our cruise, I walked on a treadmill on the day at sea and did one of the exercise yoga classes. The gym was clean and the treadmill was new and worked great. I liked that you were watching out the back window of the boat, but the class was just okay. Don’t expect to come onboard and get fit. The yoga class I took was very basic and ended up being cut short due to the raffle that day. Also the room for group classes is tiny, maybe 8 people can attend each session. Thank goodness for us, the cruise was mostly adults, and the ages varied. We are in our late 40’s and did not feel out of place. There were people of all ages, but there were definitely a lot of people well past 60, and everyone seemed to be retired. There were only about 3 babies/toddlers on the cruise, they were part of big family groups, so I don’t think it was a “choice” to be on this cruise with a child, since Silversea is definitely not designed for families or young ones. We seek out trips where kids are not allowed, so this was a plus in my book. The enrichment sessions for the Alaska cruise were good. There were several sessions, one on Glaciers, one on Totem Poles, another on Bears, one on Alaskan Bush Pilots and I’m sure there were others, all by the same person. One thing we loved was that if you missed the session, they recorded it and put it on the TV! We only attended one of the evening “shows” and it was fine. (but this is the part of cruising I hate, cheesy shows that are just embarrassing to watch). However, I will admit, the way Silversea did the show was classier than most, really just simplistic singing of songs from multiple eras. Also, the ladies that were singing in Silver Note were also very good. We sat at the bar twice and listened to them. Others have mentioned that this boat did not feel crowded. They are absolutely correct. The way they manage the restaurants, the activities, and the fact that the boat is quite large, you never feel crowded. We ran into people here and there, but overall, it was so different from other cruises where you feel like herded cattle. The only time you really noticed large groups was during the safety briefing and the last day while you wait to exit the ship. Now, onto the food onboard. My favorite dinners were at Kaiseki and Indochine - do not skip these!! Indochine had the most flavorful, unique food on the boat. I did enjoy La Terrazza, they had great house-made pasta. La Dame was very nice, but the food isn’t all that much different or better than Atlantide, which was great for formal night and the food was very nice. We ate at the pizza restaurant twice for lunch, and loved it. The Grill was a complete miss for me. I didn’t like the cook on a rock thing, and being pescatarian, my choices were limited. I opted for the shrimp, and it was gross. I couldn’t even eat them. The texture was awful. However, someone immediately noticed I was not eating them and offered me everything and anything to make up for it. We never dined at Silvernote, since we didn’t make a reservation early on, so we never got to dine there. Many people said it was great. The excursions we took were overall outstanding, well organized and timed well. While we could have booked some of these things on our own, we liked the idea of being with the companies that the cruise ship hired, so we knew they’d get us back to the ship ontime. Here are reviews of the ones we did: In Juneau, we did the Mendenhall Glacier Dog Sledding Trip. This was the highlight of the trip for me. From the thrilling helicopter transfer to the high country dogsled camp where you could see and hear over 300 dogs barking and getting excited to run, to the actual dog sled ride we took, and then we got to pet all the dogs and even held some 8 week old puppies. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this excursion. In the afternoon in Juneau, we did the Whitewater Rafting trip, which was super fun. The “rapids” were very mild and easy to navigate, but it was a nice way to spend the afternoon. They give you rain boots and waders, so as long as you have a rain coat, you’ll stay dry. We did get a few fun splashes along the way, but there was never a fear of falling out. In Skagway, we did the Chilkoot Lake Wildlife Quest. This was just okay. We took the public ferry to Haines, got in a small coach with 5 other couples and drove around looking for wildlife. We saw several bald eagles, but no bears. The lunch they served was nice, but overall, I would not choose this excursion again. Being active people in our 40’s, we would have liked a more adventurous back country experience. This would be a great experience for someone with mobility issues, but wants to see wildlife. In Sitka, we opted to take the Indian Falls Waterfall Hike. This was a no joke, 10 mile hike. We walked 5 miles in, and 5 miles back and it took the full 6 hours to complete. It was gorgeous getting well into the rainforest and our guide was a fantastic 21 year old local who knew so much about the area, the flora and fauna, and just a very pleasant person to spend the day with. If you opt for this strenuous excursion, make sure you have a good raincoat, good sturdy shoes and water resistant pants. The last 30 minutes of the trail we got dumped on, and I learned that my older raincoat was no longer as effective against the elements...... In Ketchikan, we took the Alaska Bear Adventure, which meant we took a float plane to a remote part of the island, got on a bus drove a bit, and then walked down to the viewing platform over the river to see bears. This was an AMAZING experience. We saw several bears fishing for salmon in the quick hour we were on the viewing platform. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this excursion. Bring binoculars and a camera! Tips: 1. Book dinners for later than you think. We often opted for 6pm or 7pm reservations, and in hindsight, 8pm would have been much better. Time flies between returning from an excursion and going to dinner, so having an extra hour to take a bath, relax or use the steam room, and get dressed for dinner would have been nice. I feel like this was our ‘rookie’ mistake being less experienced cruisers. 2. Do all your research on excursions before the booking window opens up. Then, go online the day they open up and reserve the ones you want immediately. The smaller group and more exclusive excursions were full within 24 hours. We did this and got to do every excursion we wanted! 3. Make dinner reservations right away as well, La Dame and Kaiseki were both full immediately after the booking window opened. 4. Do dress up for Formal Night! We ate at Atlantide for the formal night and that appears to be where many people go for the formal night. How dressy should you go? Totally up to you, but I saw long gowns, short cocktail dresses, sparkly pant suits on women and the men were in dark suits or tuxedo’s. 5. Things to bring: bring bath bombs (or bubble bath) for your bathtub; Pack a outlet converter for the UK, (while they have both US and UK outlets in your suite, having the converter made my life easier) and make sure you have comfy lounge clothes for time in your suite. If I decided to cruise again, I would definitely go with Silversea. This is a classy, upscale experience that offered great excursions, which is the only reason I would cruise, to see something, do something, or experience new places. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the size of the ship and the cruise lines reputation. Embarkation was sooo easy... best ever actually... our cabin was huge, loved it. Our butler, Richard was lovely, very attentive and anticipated all our needs. Entertainment was ok... nothing to write home about.... but the ports, service and ship.... perfect! Read so many negative reviews before sailing- was bit worried, and although the ship isn't new or glamorous, it was clean, few wear marks... but i was looking after all i had read. They made no difference to the trip. The staff were amazing... Alaska was beyond what I thought- every port great- we missed Juneau due to weather.. that was :o( as we really were looking forward to it- but that was no ones fault.... The only thing that was bad- truly bad.... we booked the rocky mountaineer for the trip before cruise (not thru silversea) but many were on board that had. To say it was bad, was an understatement,,,, the staff were young, and very impatient, unhappy and entitled. It was pricey... and i can honestly say the worst trip i have ever taken. Silversea may want to rethink their partnership. Reading online after- we saw so many negative reports with the same complaints we did. Think long and hard before you splurge for this- they should be ashamed to charge what they charge. Shameful. Read Less

My husband and I wanted to do an Alaskan cruise and had a good experience on Silver Seas in the Adriatic. The ship was ready when we got to port in Vancouver and our check-in and bag arrival to the room were seamless. Our "butler," Ardvin, was a wonderful human being and attentive without being obsequious or intrusive. Each day, the housekeeper, Wendy, had the room spotless and inviting. Meals on Silver Sea were plentiful, but truly the dining in the evening, even if three courses were chosen, was a filling but not overly bloating affair. the appetizers and soups/salads were modest at best, and the main courses always well prepared. We dined at the other two restaurants for dinner one time each, and the experiences there were equally good. We got attached to one waiter, Henry, who was a polished professional that could easily serve at a Michelin restaurant. All the wait staff were very competent, made accommodations as diners needed (a friend made on the ship had been ill one night and needed a customized dinner to take care of her upset stomach, and Henry was seamless in getting her what she needed). Breakfast had a great buffet - eggs cooked to order if you desired, plentiful and healthy choices (smoothies and fruits) as well as indulgences (pain chocolate and pastries). Each day had MANY choices of outings that included helicopter rides to glaciers, nature centers, kayak tours, etc. All levels of fitness and curiosity were met. Even though this cruise line is generally thought to be for older folks, there were several families with children (I guess given the Alaska focus), and everyone seemed content. That made for easy dinner and casual conversation after returning to the ship. There were lectures available about upcoming interests - wild life, glaciers, indigenous peoples, etc., and they were the best lectures I'd heard aboard a cruise. We had two days at sea without port, and while they were rough days, many folks nauseous, there was plenty to do if you so desired. There was a casino on our ship and my husband played in each of the three blackjack tournaments, we had a winning trivia team (WIldcats!), there were line dancing lessons, and plenty of entertainment from a very talented group of performers. Really can't say enough about Kirk, the cruise ship Director. He is man of grace, talent, patience, and ease. I know there is more I will remember once I closeout this survey, but Silver Seas was stellar! Read Less

This was our first cruise and a trip of a lifetime to Alaska. We looked at many cruise lines and we felt that this would be a good value. We were not wrong. Silver Seas is first class. I do wish that port time was longer but we did cover a lot of ground (or sea)... I cannot say enough about the crew and how wonderful they were. Pleasant, professional and just what was promoted by the cruise line. Our cabin was very comfortable. The service for our cabin was wonderful from the cleanliness of our cabin to room service. The only area that I would have changed would be the port calls. If you had a excursion there was very little time to see the actual port or surrounding area. The ports themselves are the same after a while so it would have been nice to have been able to see the areas around the towns. Also, a bit disappointed that we went to Canada for our kayak excursion? thought that was a bit weird. Read Less

We chose Silverseas after reading lots of reviews and from recommendations of friends that had previously sailed. It was our very first cruise and we were pleasantly surprised time after time of the attention we received throughout the voyage from all members of the crew whether it was from our personal butler, the restaurant staff, the bartenders, the casino staff, the receptionist, etc. We really enjoyed all the entertainment options that was available but the evening shows were just the best and all great. After seeing a show, then having dinner, we also enjoyed the music from the trio upstairs and the nostalgic music of the 50's & 60's. We did sign up for an excursion at every port and they were all very good and we learned a lot about Alaska and got to see lots of whales and sea lions. We would highly recommend this cruise line to our friends and family. Read Less

We wanted to try an upscale line and were very impressed by the Silversea experience. Service, food and overall ship was excellent. We were very satisfied. The itinerary was great, especially since we enjoyed perfect weather for the whole cruise. We did a couple shore excursions and really enjoyed them, whale watching in Juneau with Gastineau Guiding was especially wonderful. We also took the train in Skagway which was very fun and had amazing scenery. Our cabin on level 8 was spacious, well organized and always perfectly cleaned. We were very comfortable and enjoyed the excellent cabin service, even the late night pizza and Prosecco room service! We enjoyed all the restaurants onboard. We loved the Hot Rocks Grill, that was a delicious and very fun experience. They even had fleece blankets to keep us all cozy as we dined under the stars. We tried the La Dame restaurant and were blown away by the delicious, beautiful and perfectly served dinner, what a special experience! La Terraza was a great alternative a couple nights to the also wonderful main dining room. You just can't go wrong anywhere you eat! We enjoyed the speaker onboard and learned a lot about Alaska and the sites we were seeing. Also the singers and dancers onboard were very entertaining and put on a couple of really great shows. We were onboard with several other couples and it was just a fabulous trip, very enjoyable and highly recommended! Read Less

I learned so much and am looking forward to my next trip with Silversea!!! The dining staff and valet service staff were incredible knowing our names from day 1! I was a widow traveling alone, yet I never felt left out at all and felt completely safe. I knew I was in good hands with a capable staff. The lectures were amazing. that is whereI learned so much that I could barely take it all in. the leaders were not only highly trained, but very good at their lectures and video presentations. it was far more than I dreamed of. We were looking for a smaller ship with high-end values and we found it on the Silver Shadow. The tours were excellent and our cabin (808) was perfect. We loved our butler and maid. Embarkation and debarkation were extremely smooth and efficient. Would love to do it all over again. Unfortunately, since we booked only 2 months in advance we were not able to book the 2 speciality restaurants. However, the maitre'd was able to fit us in La Terezza on one evening and it was delightful. I enjoyed the very talented singers and loved the opera night. I wished they had done more nostalgic duets on the night of Duos. The Observation Deck is really wonderful and we were so fortunate to see the Hubbard Glacier and take many pictures. We also saw, on some of our excursions, whales, sea otters and bald eagles. The trip to the eagle sanctuary and bear sanctuary was very rewarding. I applaud the staff, cleanliness and comfort of the ship. The cruise director was fabulous, Rico. We had fun afternoons playing the Trivia Quiz; our team won a prize! Read Less

We traveled as a couple but enjoyed camaraderie with fellow passengers. Our cabin was a very good size even though it was a standard room with veranda. The attendant and butler kept it in tip-top shape. we didn't really utilize the butler service as we didn't feel a need. We enjoyed the choice of four dining venues for dinner and were able to use them all. The food was excellent and had a great variety. The service was outstanding, and most everyone was friendly and helpful. The entertainment options aren't great but that was OK with us, as we retired to our room around 10 each night after a full day. The ports and excursions had a nice variety. We did some hiking, strolling through towns, whale watching and salmon fishing. I would definitely sail with Silver Sea again - trying to decide where I want to go next! Read Less

Our butler Abraham was very attentive and responded to any request that we had. Another pleasant feature was that you could have your laundry done. It was a godsend when we got home. The food was always amazing. We really enjoyed going to the French and Italian restaurant. All of the wines and champagnes were excellent. It is nice having that all inclusive touch. We also really enjoyed all of our excursions. We did the pre-cruise and were able to see Dinali and also so many grizzly bears and caribou. We also went to the Mendenhall glacier by helicopter and did dog sledding and got to meet all of the dogs and the puppies. This was my first time doing a helicopter tour and it was amazing. We also really enjoyed doing a private fishing charter and fishing for rock fish and salmon. We caught many Rockfish and were able to enjoy eating them at a wilderness camp site. It was truly amazing and an experience I will never forget. We would definitely recommend taking an Alaskan cruise on Silver seas. We will definitely book another cruise with them. Read Less

Choose this because of neighbor experience in a prior year. Our first on Silversea. The ship and staff were awesome. Beautiful cabin - great butler and housekeeper. Tried all the dining rooms and all were excellent. Many onboard activities. Some later than our bodies could handle. But all that we attended were terrific. The Port visits were just great and were a super platform for going on our selected shore excursions. Shore excursions that we selected were all fun (with one exception - the canoe trip - which was lovely location with a guide on the boat that was fine, but the rest of the crew for travel to/from and condition of equipment including the bus was marginal).. We did not use much of the fitness capabilities on the ship as we selected shore activities that gave us good work outs. Pre-cruise to Denali was a great start to the cruise. Train trip to Denali was much fun. Grande Denali Lodge perfect for the setting. Trip through the park was long (8 hours school bus) but no other way to see it. Alyeska Hotel was awesome. Matin Buser stop very fun and educational. Jimmie Hendrix brief on his climb was fasinating. We did our own post-cruise to Vancouver - Suspension bridge and Stanley park were great. Read Less

This was everything I had hoped it would be when I booked it several months ago. The crew was over the top friendly and accommodating. It was very difficult to do anything for yourself as there was always a crew member offering to it for you. Our butler, Mark, was fantastic satisfying all of our needs and occasionally surprising us with something we had not expected. Wendy, our cabin attendant, was delightful. Our cabin was spotless at all times and we were always greeted at night with a new towel sculpture and chocolates. The food was remarkable! It is hard to believe that a kitchen staff can prepare food for over 300 people and still maintain the quality of the Silver Shadows cuisine. Every venue was excellent. We had an opportunity to dine at LaDame, the ship’s French cafe, for which you pay an additional fee, but passed as we were so satisfied with our other options. The hidden gem was breakfast in the Restaurant on deck 4. Everyone flocked to the buffet on deck 7 leaving this venue virtually empty. It was far better ordering from the menu in the Restaurant. Book excursions early and don’t feel you have to spend a lot to get a great experience. We booked the Misty Fjords in Ketchikan, the Whale and Glacier Photo Safari in Juneau and the Whie Pass Railroad in Skagway. All were great experiences and priced mid range. We spoke to several travelers who booked more expensive excursions that resulted in experiences that did not meet their expectations. Keep in mind when considering fly-ins and helicopter rides that the weather may leave you sorely disappointed. All the helicopter flights in Juneau were cancelled because of the weather. We also chose to book the post cruise Denali excursion. DO IT! It was worth every penny. Whether you use Silver Seas or arrange it yourself it is a must. If you travel to Alaska and do not visit Denali you have NOT seen Alaska. While we may have saved a few dollars booking this ourselves, once we left the ship our guide saw to it that we never touched our luggage and enjoyed a relaxed, carefree four days in the wilderness. Spencer, our guide, was fabulous. He was professional, knowledgeable and an asset. You could not ask for a more qualified person to take you into the wilderness. His partner, Lori, our driver, was great! We all felt very safe and she was a stitch. My only negative comment is really not meant to be negative, but a suggestion instead. I believe the quality of the wines, or at the very least the selection, included in the cost of the trip could be improved. The whites were very good, the reds ok. I realize that when pouring as much wine as they were that to be cost effective you have to be careful, but a bit of an upgrade would be nice. There is no question that if we book another cruise to a location to which they sail Silverseas will be our choice. Thank you for a phenomenal life experience! Read Less

We chose Silversea because of its stellar reputation and attention to every detail. My family spent 2 days in Vancouver before the cruise. What a beautiful city! Don't miss visiting Suspension Bridge Park- definitely a must see. The ease and organization that was displayed by the luggage handlers for Silversea as we arrived at the dock confirmed what we had read about this cruise line--attention to detail everywhere. We felt like royalty from the moment we walked on the ship and were greeted with a glass of champagne and smiling faces from our crew. Our Medallion suite was much larger than I thought it would be. Our 3 children were each in a Veranda suite and they also remarked on the spaciousness of their rooms. The service was top-notch. Every crew member went out of their way to make sure my family was comfortable and had everything we needed. After returning from a fishing trip on a chilly day in Sitka, hot baths were waiting for us. How did the butlers know that they were just we wanted?! Our 3 children and their significant others (all in their 20's and 30's) were on the dance floor every night dancing to the music played by DJ Rob. Our cruise director Kirk seemed to have boundless energy- seriously, how was he was able to lead so many activities each day? Someone needs to bottle his energy! I enjoyed each of the restaurants, and the portion size was perfect. We enjoyed "dressing up" for dinner in The Restaurant and also dining informally under the stars on the pool deck. And of course, nothing beats a room service breakfast. We loved each of the ports we stopped in, but if we had to pick one excursion over the others it would be the heli tour/glacier walk in Skagway. Unforgettable. Visiting the Iditarod summer camp in Juneau was a close second. Although we were sad to see the cruise end, we have fabulous memories to keep us company until we sail on another Silversea ship. Read Less

Every room has a butler and attendant who takes care of anything you need. While we did not travel with children, it appeared there were planned activities for kids. The ship has everything you can possibly want without the crowd of a "party ship". There was a fitness center, 4 restaurants, theater, casino, and pool with two jacuzzis. Getting on and off the boat was effortless. We were able to register to the boat and get to our room in about 10 minutes. Disembarkation was even easier. The restaurants and room services were spectacular as well. We would gladly sail Silversea again. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted a ship with a small amount of people and we wanted to cruise round trip from Vancouver. We researched the cruise ship online and all of the ports before making a decision and it sounded like what we were looking for. It turned out to be absolutely perfect!! The ship was just the right size and it was beautiful and spotless from top to bottom and everything in between. Our cabin was on the Veranda deck in the middle of the ship and we could not have asked for better. We had a private balcony with more storage and space than we needed to use. The double sinks in the bathroom along with the shower and separate tub was very impressive and more than enough space. There were several dining choices of restaurants including a dining room with open seating daily and nightly. The nightly entertainment and activity choices as well as excursions gave us a chance to see everything we wanted to see and then some. We had a butler that came to our cabin when we arrived and she could not have done any more for us than she did. She brought coffee and breakfast each morning and each evening when we arrived back to our cabin at the end of the day, we found the following days news and candy displayed out for us. Anything that we needed during the day was done with a smile. We used the fitness center on board which had all the latest equipment including water and towels as well as instructors, classes and anything else you might need. I could keep going and going, but I think you get the idea that Silver sea the Silver Shadow is a fabulous line and we would not hesitate to sail it again along with any of their other ships. I like to unpack once and that is why a cruise is idea for me. I usually sail on Silversea because I believe it is the best cruise experience. The small ships and the attentive service are what makes this cruise line great. I like a bit more space so I usually select from one of the four top cabins. Silversea is all inclusive including whatever drink you want unless it is a very high end wine or say, aged scotch. The butlers make your every request come true. The staff work to accommodate you. I wanted more selections of sugar free items and they made me my own batch of sugar free blueberry muffins. They were great! The food is presented well and always a treat. They also provide nice excursions. The float plane excursion in Juneau to Taku Lodge and over 5 glaciers was the most amazing - it is a must! Read Less

We spent 1 day in Anchorage before traveling by train to Seward. 4 ½ hours along the Cook Inlet and through a national forest. Rivers, waterfalls, scenery and several beautiful glaciers. Boarded ship and after muster and checking into our room had a wonderful dinner at La Terrazza while leaving port, watching a solo orca surface and dive in the harbor and watching the western sunset into the late evening as we dined. Our room, a Veranda Suite on deck 5, was laid out beautifully. Roomy with a comfortable king bed, walk in closet, a nice size bathroom with a separate shower and tub and a small private balcony that was like a moving picture constantly changing as we sailed east toward the Hubbard Glacier and then south toward our port destinations. We ate at La Dame ($60 pp extra) the second night. Exquisite multi course meal. An extravagant evening well worth the extra charge. We ate at every restaurant in the evenings ( mostly La Terrazza) and the food, presentation and service were superb and first class at all. Breakfast, lunch and room service served by our butler also excellent. We did not have one bad meal. Tea at 4 in the Panorama lounge added a touch of class to the cruise. The wine choices, although said to be premium were not up to our standards, especially the reds. Maybe because of our taste for big California reds and crisp Chardonnays. Wines were mostly Italian with some middle grade whites from California, Italy and maybe Argentina. Spirits were all top shelf premium brands. All included so hard to complain. This ship is a jewel. It has that ageless deco feel. Yes, it is a little worn by age but like a fine tool or instrument, the beauty and patina can be appreciated as it ages with time. We utilized the spa on several occasions. Excellent professional staff there to serve any grooming needs or maybe a nice relaxing deep tissue massage, twice for me. Nice workout room with current equipment. Sauna and steam as well. There are so many excursions to choose from. We did the Whale Watch and Wildlife tour out of Juneau. Well worth it. Saw several humpback whales, harbor seals, sea lions and at least 50 bald eagles. Had to cancel our salmon fishing in Sitka because it was catch and release until June 15. Trout yes. Salmon no. Sitka our favorite town. Lots of history. We did the artist walk and the glass artist was fabulous. Even got to do some glass work ourselves. Informative and fun. This ship is a total first class experience. Like sailing on a large private yacht with a few of your friends. It never felt crowded. We were never rushed to do anything. The staff actually gets to know you by name. We felt very special the whole time on board. This is a must experience. Read Less

We chose Silverseas as part of a 5 week tour of Canada and Alaska to celebrate a big birthday for both my husband and I. We like to experience lovely places and have a bit of luxury occasionally but we also like the casual lifestyle so we were a little concerned that we would feel out of place on this particular cruise ship. We needn't have worried as we enjoyed every moment of it. Our stateroom (balcony varanda 3) was spacious and bright with a walk in wardrobe and a mini bar which was quickly filled with our favourite drinks. Everyone has a butler, which again we were unsure how we would feel about because we like to do things for ourselves. However our butler Adolf was truly delightful and immediately made us feel as ease. He always had a smile for us and greeted us with our names whenever he saw us around the ship, constantly asking what he could do for us. We used the breakfast buffet in the morning and the restaurant for dinner in the evening and the food was delicious it both. The waiters were attentive and were keen to make sure we were happy with our meals. Entertainment from the voices of Silversea, Elkaterine the pianist, Daniel the guitarist and the cruise director kirk was lovely. We really enjoyed our time on the Silver Shadow and we definitely be choosing Silverseas again in the future. Read Less

Wanted the experience but didn’t want to be with lots of people. The ship was beautiful, clean and well maintained. No lines, polite happy faces, everyone willing to assist. The service was great. Never really knew what to use the butler for. It would of been nice to see a list of options. Found out some people had service brought to them in card room or drinks in observation room. I know they would unpack and pack for you but that is for super organized folks, not us. Always felt very safe on ship and didn’t lock anything up in room. Cabin was always clean. Best food was the pool deck grill, the filet on the hot stone, amazing. Breakfast buffet was good each morning. All food and drinks were good. The desserts could use some improvement-cookies tasted store bought. The excursions were booked via the cruise and were really nice. Fly out fly fishing was my favorite. The closeup view of the glacier was very exciting. Captain really took time to let everyone get a great view. Crew was good about pointing out whales and points of interest. The spa was nice and service was good. They kept talking about a footprint analysis of the feet but we couldn’t ever get that completed. Spa personnel was well trained. Read Less

We have recently returned from two weeks on Silversea's 'Silver Shadow', Vancouver - Alaska - Vancouver. We greatly enjoyed it, both the ship and Alaska. In regard to the ship, the positives are: Excellent food, wines and service Very comfortable accommodation, in the cabin and public areas Excellent crew at all levels - people who quickly know you by name, are genuinely pleased to see you and who positively want to give good service and help when needed. Very good and varied entertainment with some outstandingly good singers Doesn't feel crowded: easy embarkation and disembarkation: no queuing for anything: tables always available when you want to eat Overall, a very relaxing environment and friendly atmosphere: a truly wonderful experience Negatives? Very few - only real gripes from our perspective were lack of (non disco) music for dancing after dinner, and public areas sometimes a bit too cold. La Dame probably not worth the extra cost, because food in the main restaurant is so good. The big shock was to receive an email from Silversea HQ on our final morning aboard, notifying the link up with Royal Caribbean. There must be a real fear that with a 67% holding, funded by debt which needs to be serviced, Royal Caribbean will press for savings  which might appear marginal but which will damage the personal service and special quality of the on-board experience. There is a view that this happened to Regent when Norwegian acquired it, and our personal experience would tend to back that up. It also so happened that before the RC news emerged, we spoke with crew on Silver Shadow who had worked for Regent, whose view was that exactly this had occurred (and also senior crew were replaced, they said). It would be terribly sad, and indeed bad for business so far as we are concerned , if the same thing were to happen to Silversea. Read Less

My wife and I choose Silver Seas for their smaller ships and reputation for great customer service. We weren't disappointed. The staff was very attentive to our needs, we wanted for naught! Embarkation & disembarkation went smoothly, options for traveling independently or through Silver Seas are available. Passengers travelled by private train from Anchorage airport to Seward port. Our veranda cabin was spacious with a large walk in closet, comfortable bed and dining area with a private balcony. Butler service was special like the rest of the staff who truly cared about our comfort and experience on board. The food was always good and mostly excellent. We ate most dinners in the Restaurant, open seating with a variety of a-la-carte options to choose from - some dishes were better than others. We didn't try La Dame, the French restaurant with limited seating and an upcharge was fully booked prior to our departure. We did reserve Le Terrazza the Italian restaurant and enjoyed the meal but didn't think it was better than the Restaurant. We sampled the outdoor Grill for lunch and it was excellent. The weather may play a factor. Entertainment was centered on the ships 6 performers who sand and danced theme production which lasted 45 minutes. Most dancing and ship activities ended around 11pm. Nights were quite and peaceful. Days had limited announcements which was fine. Printed itineraires and world news summaries were delivered daily to the room. Silver Seas stopped at the usual inside passage ports. We choose some independent excursions and some booked through the ship. Overall the service was what most impressed us; the staff were real people and held real conversations, not corporate drones. Over time on ship they were the biggest assest. Would recommend Silver Seas for the reasons above and for anyone who doesn't want to cruise just to 'party'. Read Less

I choose this trip because I have always wanted to see Alaska. December 2016, I cruised Silver Sea on the Silver Wind to the Caribbean. I fell in love with Silver Sea. This cruise was on the Silver Shadow and the next in 2018 will be on the Silver Whisper. Each ship is a little different but similar in the rooms etc. The ports they stop at are adventures you may never have taken before and you have so many to choose from. On the ship is many activities for anyone and everyone. You may choose to do some or choose not to. It is all up to you. The dinning is to die for and everyone is so kinds and ready and waiting to serve you. This trip to Alaska I choose to take the culture activity as I was interested in the totems. What stories they tell. I took the photo cruise and saw an eagle and whales, oh my. Learned about taking better photos. So much to tell you. For me this is the ship I shall sail one always. The ports, the staff and my fantastic cruise consultant Alfonso Reveron. He has guided me and answered all my many questions. I have so much to tell about this cruise and my first. I wrote a book which sells on Amazon called "My Very First Cruise" and I will be writing my next about Alaska and Silver Sea as well as Denali. You will never go wrong with Silver Sea as it has a ratio of about 2 or 3 staff for every traveler. You get a butler. But besides the very best ports and the very best cruising, everything is included. You do not get that on the bigger ships. I have never waited in any line. Again, YOU WILL NEVER GO WRONG with Silver Sea. Read Less
