Expensive cruise (cost me 10k with flight) staff never bothered (only waiters giving out drinks all the time) Partially disabled and ordered wheelchair to board the ship. When I arrived was told none available they had ran out but only a couple of yards to walk or wait 1/2 hour. I walked, Almost 100 yards. Struggled. Passengers asked if I needed help. Staff didn't bother. Lots of restaurants but charged 60 dollars extra in some. Food varied but always luke warm. Breakfast in cabin always came wrong. I complained the first time, to no avail. Even staff when standing next to doors seldom held open for you. Ignorant. The service wasn't as advertised. Packing case/unpacking. Paper on floor after cleaner had come in to clean. Was fed up with it all. The first night was asked if I wanted to sit with someone. I prefer this but was never asked again. Passengers asked me if I wanted to join them though. Found attention from passengers embarassing- but very thoughful . I'm not one to seek attention. I didn't think after compllaining to steward I wanted to complain anymore and cause to be be singled out by the staff. I decided to leave after 3 days. I wrote to Silver seas to ask for plartial refund. 500 dollar onboard credit never spent (couldn't have all been profit) but refused. The cabin was on standby and only booked a couple of weeks before. Cancellation I expect. Silver Spirit did offer 1k on future cruise. This was the last of finances and now on state pension and a bit of disability. Which I did convery to them. So impossible for me a future cruise. This was the cruise of a lifetime for me and the last one. Anyway if free wouldn't go again. Just a bog standard reply from them I expect./ They really don't care (well, they do when you book) ninutes to answer the phone. Week when you complain. Sign of the times. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was my first holiday in 10 years and we didn’t want to take any chances so we went for the best. The evening after I booked the trip (not yet paid in full) I did more research on the Spirit only to find that she was being cut in half and lengthened and that we were on the first cruise following the work. We called both our agent and Silversea the following morning to express our concerns. They reassured us several times that the ship would be perfect so we went ahead and paid for the holiday based on this reassurance. The ship was far from perfect.We had no lights in our bathroom, walk in closet or passageway, no phone, no tv, no safe, no air con. The Arts Cafe and Silver Note didn’t open until the 4th evening of the cruise. There were teams of workmen on and off the ship, welding cylinders left in public areas, whole sections closed off at the stern, grout splashed around the deck, masking tape around the lights etc. The ship simply was not finished and should never have sailed in that state. Some of our faults were fixed on the fourth day, some not at all. The ship had just not been fully tested and certainly shouldn’t have had paying passengers on it the state she was in. The only remedy offered by Silversea was 2 led nightlights to help us find the toilet. They had no spare cabins (despite people telling us that wasn’t true) so we were given no choice but to put up with it. The crew were entirely overwhelmed by the problems. We also had other problems with crew incompetence with the tenders entirely messing up another day for us and the spa firstly messing up our bookings, then losing them completely then overcharging on both appointments, one by over $100. To add insult to injury the Captain was making a joke of it and thanking us for testing out his ship for him. I Was also introduced at one point to the fleet manager and when he was told I’d had a lot of problems he said nothing, turned and walked away. Whilst onboard every passenger, regardless of their level of inconvenience were offered 25% of the fare paid as a future cruise credit. We were promised a call from Silversea within a couple of days of returning home. That didnt happen. I called them and was promised an initial response within 48 hours. That didn’t happen. I Called again and was promised again a response within 48 hours. That didn’t happen. I emailed Frank Sansone. I’m still awaiting a response. I Spoke to somebody in the Miami office and she told me she would pass it upwards. I emailed her the following week for an update only to find that she had blocked my email address. I have since been dealing with Peter Shanks, who despite being told that we will not be sailing with Silversea again insists that a future cruise credit is more than generous. I paid for our ultra luxury cruise in good faith. An ultra luxury cruise is certainly not what we received and Silverseas refusal to deal with our complaints in a reasonable manner has been unbelievable. On a more positive note, the crew were trying very hard but should never have been placed in that position. The food onboard was generally excellent apart from the lobster in pea soup main course in la dame and the fact that they can’t cook a pizza in Spacanopoli. So cruisers beware! If I had known how poor the management of this company was before I paid for this holiday I would never have booked with them. I have held off from writing this review as I wanted to give Silversea every opportunity to put things right which I gladly would have included in my review. It’s glaringly obvious now after 2 months, dozens of phone calls an emails that they have no intention of doing so. Read Less

This was first part of back to back. Capetown to Mumbai. Seemed like good ports. On second leg no outside entertainment. All we had was stable of singers on board. Did have local dancers at one port. A cheap way to stick it to passengers. Main and veranda dining rooms very limited selection. The main dining room had a hamburger every night that had texture of baby food. Salad selection just about same each night mesculan. Not much, not good. All dressings lacked flavor. For an Italian owned ship pasta was pasty and bread sticks on table were soggy half the time. The gelato they served was the worst ever had including all over Italy. Seemed to be water vs. cream. Fish burnt, soup tasteless, portions bigger on our flight home then in dining room. Waiters ability to help in choices non existent due to their lack of English skills. First cruise of 30 days that I lost weight on. Plenty of alcohol. In the cabins no mid sized towels. Only bath and hand. Overall color scheme dark and old. Low ceilings in public rooms. They are going into dry dock about a year late. Limited deck chairs with shade at pool. They increased pool dining area at expense of shade for chairs. No cushions on chairs. Had trouble getting a diet 7up or sprite. Not a US ship so guess not important to them. Balcony chairs have no cushions only straps. They were not comfortable. Entertainment with their singers at times recorded music, might as well have had a CD to listen to. Using their laundry service clothes returned all wet. This is not the way to spend your time or money. There are plenty of good cruise lines that you can travel on. Crystal, Regent, Seabourn and probably many others that provide a value for the money spent. I have had over 50 cruises since 1972 this rates as the worst. NEVER AGAIN Read Less

The ship was shabby- worn out dirty carpets, grubby and dirty upholstery in the public rooms. The staff were obviously demoralised and indifferent to the passengers. The worst feature was Silver Seas arrogance in taking us to horrible ports - 2 days in Richards Bay - a coal export port in South Africa. Fine if you enjoy coal dust with your meals on deck. Second class entertainers and a Cruise Director who seemed bored and was just going through his usual patter. Dirty sun loungers on the very small and crowded sun deck. Worn out, thin and torn deck towels Grossly overpriced tours arranged by the ship. Very poor meet and greet - mainly concerned with getting a swipe of your credit card ! No meaningful meet and greet after returning from shore visits. Food - good but not exceptional for a cruse line that pretends to be at the top of the cruising league. I am not alone in this view - it represents the view on many fellow passengers that I spoke to on the cruise that left Cape Town this January. Read Less

I went on this cruise with my family (five adults total). We are all experienced with cruises and given that this is a luxury line, we were very surprised at the service we received and the low quality of the food and entertainment. The food was on par with cruise lines like Carnival and Celebrity. It was edible but not particularly good, very surprising for such an expensive line. The staff also had no idea how to handle food allergies. At one point, after repeatedly telling the waiter that a member of our party was deathly allergic to shellfish, he delivered soup to that person with crab in it. Luckily, we recognized it before they ate any. The shore excursions were lacking and the staff was difficult to work with and refused to even answer questions. The excursions manager was openly hostile, which is something we have never experienced on any other cruise line. We definitely wouldn't cruise with Silversea again. Read Less

We have cruised to various locations, cruise lines but with a range of experiences. We chose Silversea for the smaller ships but luxurious suites & service offered. What a disappointment. We booked the best part of a year ago in a guaranteed V1 category. We received our tickets 10 days before sailing & were allocated a disabled suite. We complained to our tour operator immediately but were told the ship was fully booked. There was no bath or walk-in wardrobe as advertised. The door was automatic & took several seconds to open & close which meant that we were fully exposed to people passing by our suite for up to 10 seconds. We specifically chose Silver Spirit for the bath & our travel agent knew this. The food was always cold & the service hit & miss. We waited one and a half hours for breakfast in the restaurant. We could not sail to Marseille due to poor weather conditions but there was no plan B on the ship. As a result we spent 2 very boring days in Livorno. Entertainment was good when provided but only offered on 2 nights. Staff were disinterested & we discovered that this was the final Mediterranean cruise before the ship headed off to warmer climates in Middle East. Maybe that's why they couldn't be bothered. Overall the worst cruise we have ever been on & twice the cost!!! Read Less

I have been on Silver Spirit several times and always throughly enjoyed the experience however on this 18 night cruise from Buenos Aries to Bridgetown it was awful. Lots of people were sick and confined to cabins , no one was making sure that people sanitized their hands before going into the restaurants and no tanoy announcements to warn people. Food was appalling , I was traveling solo but met up with several lovely couples but apart from the Italian restaurant everything was always cold , even the fries ..hot rocks steak was lovely but baked potato cold and when I complained to an officer he said " it is what it is " This Cruise is not cheap and people expect 5 star treatment but we certainly didn't get it on this ship sadly and all the people that I had made friends with said the same and would never book with Silversea again , we couldn't wait to get off in Barbados and have a decent meal at the hotel . Cabin was also very tired looking and stains on the carpet I had a 33 night cruise booked on this ship for later in the year so I wrote in to customer services to complain as I didn't want to spend 33 nights eating cold or luke warm food and they did apologies and said that they would call the ship to make sure that the food was hot ?? Why should they have to do that ..no compensation offered so I cancelled my future cruise and booked Crystal ! Sadly " it's not what it was " Read Less

Having recently cruised on Oceania we were expecting high quality food on Silver Spirit- regrettably that was not the case. Dinner service was extremely slow and food quality was mediocre at best. Food preparation was marginal (uncooked meat...) Only Buffet service was breakfast and the specialty restaurants that we tried were unimpressive. The Butler service is a mislabeling - cabin steward was polite but had been working on SIlversea only a couple of months. In general the entire service staff was good but they did not have much to work with. We understood that Silversea headquarters had revamped the entire restaurant service and obviously reduced the food quality. We shared dinner with several dedicated Silversea passengers who were very disappointed and are likely to avoid this line. To repeat, the service staff was attentive but obviously worked with the owners guidance. We booked this pricey cruise with high expectations, but were truly disappointed. We found that free wine and alcohol was of very marginal value to us. Having one showtime only was disappointing - many of the older people (like we) would have preferred an earlier showtime - to follow an earlier dinner. Read Less

I promised myself I would write this review today as I feel obligated to warn fellow cruisers of our experience as a 7 day cruisers on the tail end of a World Cruise. My husband and I choose this trip as a 25th Anniversary Celebration and fully expected a wonderful cruising experience on the Silver Sea Spirit- cruising the Red Sea- Petra, Sharm, Suez and Alexandria- ending in Greece. We travel a lot but both are still self employed and do not desire to take long vacations, however, we take many small vacations every year. We have traveled from Galapagos, Trans Siberian RR, Borneo, Europe, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, Morroco, Baltic Countries, South America, etc... We stay at 5 star and we stay at 2 or 3 star accommodations. We enjoy many types of experiences. So I believe we set off on our adventure at Easter to meet up with the Silver Sea Spirit at the Red Sea with good expectations and as experienced travelers. However, we should have known something was wrong from the minute we joined the group on a day trip in Luxor. The cruise director who was there early had no idea we were joining group and questioned us on whether we had paid for that part of excursion-we had.(Though it was free for all other travelers as mid- cruise excursion) After an afternoon of touring in Luxor we boarded the pre-assigned bus #6- which had our name on a list and set off for a 3 hour in the dark trip to Red Sea and Safaga. At arrival on the ship no one greeted us, bus driver stopped us from pulling our own baggage but yet we had to go to a harbor police to find assistance- Silver Sea knew we were on that transfer but made no effort to greet us. Upon arrival in our room, our assigned Butler was off so some one showed us a couple things, no offered to help unpack -champagne and fruit was waiting. I do not know what the purpose of the butlers are other than to bring coffee when I ordered in the morning. There was no attempt to anticipate our needs, no attempt to bring snacks to pool as Beaches/Sandals Butlers do, no attempt to bring canapes/snacks before dinner- nothing. The gift shop was very poor selections on everyday items, I hunted the whole cruise and at the ports for curlers or curling iron, having forgot mine to no avail. Nor did any staff seem to care- Meals were so so and not any better than Carnival. The Supervisor of the Butlers should go to school at Beaches/Sandals and figure out how to be make a vacation truly enjoyable.... Our Butler was nice and brought coffee - when I ordered- that was it..... However, the purpose of my review is to explain NEVER EVER to join a world cruise in the last week or two of their 100 day cruise even if it is free- unless your time is worth nothing- then only if free-- There were no activities on board except shuffleboard, scrabble and bridge that no one was playing. There were no cooking demonstrations, no ice carving, nothing. Even the captain's bridge tour was limited to those who had "signed up 10 days earlier" in Dubai or something, since we joined 7 days after Dubai that was not much help. The staff made no effort to meet us at arrival. (another traveler we met last day advised of same experience.) The staff made no effort to provide any orientation to the few couples that arrived at Safaga. Never ever was there a meeting to acquaint orient, to explain availability of shore excursions, anything about ship, anything about anything- we were just shadows- maybe SPIRTS! who joined at Safaga etc. We were advised when I asked on 4th or 5th day that this had been done earlier in the 100 day world cruise- My newspapers did not start until 3 days later- All I can figure out is the staff was worn out from 100 days or they themselves had joined the world traveler club of which we were not a member. A mention about other travelers- The first couple of days we could not decide if the mostly elderly travelers had a hearing problem or were simple rude. My husband is 85 and I 55, so we are used to dealing with people in this age range. It is common courtesy for us- to say Good Morning to someone we pass in the hall- outside of the restaurant heading in to breakfast- however- they would look past you -like you did not exist- finally, we quit saying good morning. Perhaps none of them could hear- or they were too tired of their trip, or they simply did not associate with the common people who did not have their name engraved on a brass name plate outside their room and only joined the cruise for 7 days- I truly believe it was the latter based upon multiple experiences. So as you can see- a group of very "cliquish" travelers- who already were in the group- (Thought perhaps I was in junior high again and a new kid) and a ship staff that did NOTHING- let me repeat NOTHING to welcome you, to orient you, to provide activities and information to the few couples that joined in Safaga or even Dubai as I was advised from a Dubai embarkation couple. Since, you do not know WHO this handful of newly arrived travelers were- as there was not even an orientation meeting- you couldn't even find travelers with same experience going on. One evening was touted as Arabian night- since we had no pre-warning of this other than the daily paper- I did not bring my Abeya or a head wrap etc, I looked at the yet another empty port town on the Red Sea that we stopped and could find nothing, I looked in ship's gift shop and they had nothing- yet when we arrived at the pool side dinner- (the one special dinner) this whole group of world travelers were dressed the part and dancing and carry-on etc. When I questioned how they could find such outfits and had such warning, I was advised that -oh they bought those in Dubai where they planned it with cruise staff a week before we arrived. I do not understand why the cruise staff could not have had at least some head wraps- etc for sale in the gift shop or something for the rest of us, infidels. The Suez Canal transit was very boring, just desert on both sides and flat, so nothing entertaining like a Panama transit. In addition, the "expert" only spoke from a loud speaker that was not audible from the observation deck. (The stated reason was that a ship of the calibre of Silver Sea Spirit could not figure out how to broadcast in the observation deck/room without broadcasting in the spas.? Go figure..) The last port was Alexandria and as my husband and I sat sipping coffee, a couple walked by that I recalled meeting 6 days early on an elevator and thought they may have arrived the same day as we had arrived. I said hello and we sat and had coffee, they had the exact same opinion on these topics in which I post- When I said to them that I had told my husband that morning that I felt like we were the "Black Sheep of the Cruise"- she laughed and said she had said -just that morning that they were the "Lost Children of the Cruise." They advised that previously they had been on the first week of a world cruise and the experience was totally different and activities were going on- and guests were friendly- (probably didn't realize they were only on for 1 week-ha) Speaking of that the ship staff had a couple special meeting/dinners for these really special people- who were part of the world cruise- which is fine- BUT they still needed to do something for the rest of us. Other than handing us a bucket and mop to mop the floors - we were treated like 4th class travelers. Very poor and one could not PAY me to take another SILVERSEA World cruise-in which I only joined for a week. I might would consider a week or 10 day cruise that all guests were on the same itinerary- however, I would look close at what the ship had to offer in activities on board etc before I wasted my money on Silver Sea again. I did mention the last night my dissatisfaction to the Butler on these issues on the cruise- I did not think much of this was his responsibility- and he immediately brought his supervisor- who had just joined the ship from I think a South America cruise and she was very kind, understanding and seemed genuinely concerned and appeared to believe these issues were unacceptable. At a minimum she had been trained on how to handle a customers dissatisfaction.- not that I ever heard anything more- nor did I really expect to. I was disappointed that the comment questionnaire did not have a company land address to mail them to- therefore I did not take the time to complete as i assumed it would not make it off the ship. In any event, I hope this review helped some in deciding whether to join in the middle of a world cruise---On a side note- since nothing going on- I was able to watch Royal wedding and the Osama death coverage in the beautiful cabin and I appreciated the veranda and the heavy curtain separating the bedroom area from sitting area. The disembakring experience in NYC ruined the cruise. There was no representative from Silversea to assist passnegers attempting to find the bus to LaGuardia airport. No one on the ground knew which bus was destined to this airport. We literally wandered around trying the street to find our bus - again NO ONE from Silversea was there to assist this operation. Bus driver admitted he was not familar w/ streets of NYC. He refused to take passengers to their terminal besides terminal B at LaGuardia. I was forced to gather all my luggage abd walk through the airport terminal w/ my luggage trying to find a transit bus to transport me to the Delta terminal at LaGuarda - terminal D. It was a total mess - many passengers were visibly upset. This was excusable on the part of Silversea - you had our money and now we were less than human. Someone from Silversea should be TERMINATED for this toal lack of civilty and service. Many people on the bus voiced the consensus opinion that this will be our last cruise because of the fiasco in NYC. As a trained PH.D. ethicist all the people on the bus to Laguardia should receive financial compensation for the disgraceful behavior we were treated by Silversea. We were viewed as cattle who did not to be treated as a human being.I would gladly talk to some representative, but doubt my opinion matters. You failed to make this cruise memorable by the manner you treated people disembarking the ship in NYC. Shame on Silversea!!! Read Less

We chose Silver Sea based on previous excellent experiences. Cabin was not acceptable, see below. The Manager of Guest Relations, Ms Ana Pedroso De Lima, could not see us for the first two (2) days of the cruise because she was "busy". The food was generally tasteless. The presentation was often pretty good, but the food just didn't taste good. A big disappointment from our previous experience. Did not check out entertainment; the enrichment lectures by Prof Adelman were great. Service was generally very good, other than the Guest Relations Office. Ports and Shore excursions were great and enjoyable. Based on our experience on this cruise, Silver Sea has lost us. We told everyone how great our experience had been on previous cruises, and in fact some of our friends have booked cruises based on our recommendation. No more. This cruise has destroyed the Silver Sea brand for us (and anybody we know). Read Less

Meeting with Hotel Director later this am. Very sad. Our friends who are with us usually go on Regent. 1st time on SS and because of this experience will not go back on SS. Women`s restrooms on 4th Fl (outside of restaurants) and 7th Fl repeatedly disgusting, out of towels, etc. Female Japanese guest observed to be trying to clean restroom 4th Fl (outside of restaurants) herself! Last night we went to Panarama Lounge 9:00pm after Dinner---NO STAFF! We had to go behind Bar and serve ourselves. Called Reception to complain and they say “ Panarama Staff are on Break from 8:30 -9:30pm! Why not stagger breaks but at least have some Staff present during anticipated times for use of Lounge (ie—after dinner)? Much of 6th FL deck, incl our friend`s room very warm and could not get thermostat to cool off. Very uncomfortable throughout Cruise until just yesterday. Thermostat worked fine in our Suite, but problems with plumbing throughout cruise (continuous sounds of gurgeling coming from sinks and shower drains 24/7). Another experience in Panarama Lounge---UNBELIEVABLE! All (4) of us go for drinks after dinner into the Panarama Lounge. We all order drinks and I requested a special Cognac. Debbie and our fiends get their drinks and the Waiter puts an empty Cognac glass in front of me and says that he is going to get the Cognac and return. 40 min later, Debbie and friends had finished their drinks. Same Waiter comes over and looks at my empty glass and asks if I would like another Cognac! We are all thinking this guy is trying to be funny and then realize that he was serious! I tell him that I never rec`d my 1st glass. He picks up my glass, puts his nose it and proceeds to smell 2x, and then puts my glass back on the table and says that he was sorry, starts to leave, and says that he will go and get the Cognac! We are all really SHOCKED witnessing this happen. I then stop him and demand that he get me a CLEAN GLASS! UNBELIEVAABLE!!!!! Pool/Lido Deck Grill---Super Poor Svc and food not good. Lots of Staff simply standing around, talking to themselves, as if they are in training or don`t care. Guests flag down Staff for service quite often (we even had to get up out of our seats to get attention of Staff just standing around). Very poor Management overseeing these Guest Services on Pool/Lido Deck. Overall food definitely gone downhill—quality and selections in La Terraza Lunch and Dinner not as good as before. Entertainment was very poor---although we do not usually go to many Shows anyways. Alantide—Formal Night—I forgot to bring ties on Cruise. I had Black Dress Shirt, Black Slacks, looked nice, but no tie. Several people were in line checking in. Instead of pulling me aside and quietly/politely advising me that I needed a tie to come in and eat, Maitra`d proceeds to advise me in a LOUD voice . . . I pulled him aside and told him that I understood the policy and respected that what he was saying but was critical about the way the message was delivered. He really did not care. I then asked if Debbie and our guests could please be seated and that I would try to go find a tie and return. Despite being advised of Debbie`s impaired vision and us needing a well lighted table, he proceeds to sit us in a knowing dark unacceptable table. Wanted to see the Fjords. Had nothing to do with Silver Seas. Our friends had a so-so experience on an exploration type cruise so wanted to give the more conventional cruise a chance with SS. The wait staff, especially the so called head maitre d were terrible. Bepin, Norbert, and Samuel were great. In fact, we went to IndoChin the last 5 nights because the service was so bad elsewhere. E.g. I wanted two scoops of vanilla with chocolate sauce which was not on the menu. Waiter did not offer to get it for me. So, I left table, went up to the ice cream lady and got it myself, returned to the restaurant to stunned faces. On outside grill, had to go get a glass of wine downstairs because noone came by to check on us. At almost every meal, someone made me feel like I was imposing. Bepin and Norbert didn't play those games. Tours were ok. Train ride (not Flam) was a fiasco. We had fun, but who wants to feel like an imposition. Get rid of the tall short haired blond supposed maitre d...it's clear his staff was afraid of him. Never smiled and he's two faced--smile then shut it off as soon as guest left his presence. Jerk. Food was ok, but not outrageously good. Bepin did respond to my request to steak (gave me filet mignon, not sirloin) and lobster on the last night and another change up to the Indochin menu no questions asked. Wonderful. And the other thing was the language barrier for us Americans. I should say the pronunciation barrier for us America. The waitress did not understand the term blend, slush, and frozen for a margarita drink. It was repeated to her several times. No clue what we were talking about. We ran into this almost every day. And the 11th floor bar in the front of the boat had no breakfast or anything until 6PM. Coffee was only avaialble in the back of the boat. Very bad. We went the first night at 6PM or later for drinks and never again because the second night we didn't know it wasn't open at 5:00 PM for happy hour (duh!). Silly us. It takes two-three days to get the lay of the land. Again, the ship itself was ok for some things and uneven for others. I enjoyed my walks outside around the pool, but that had nothing to do with staff although Harvey, a waiter outside, was super nice and checked up on my step total. Most wheelchairs I've ever seen on a cruise. If I had trouble negotiating and/or locating my way around the ship, I can't imagine their plight. Embarkation and disembarkation were the best of our experience as cruisers. Super organized and done quickly, including even getting our pictures taken and all of that. Leaving on bus was very well done and we felt comfortable with that. Coming on board, they allowed our taxi to pull right up to the waiting group of staff members. Nice. You can't take the beauty of what we saw on the ship. SS had nothing to do with that. We did enjoy that part of it, but our experience with the staff was so uneven and weird (remember all four of us in our party felt the same thing, so it's not just the author) that we won't be back. If it wasn't for Bepin, Samuel, and Norbert, we might have settled for room service dinner. Read Less

After reading earlier reviews we specifically asked Silverseas Uk for reassurance that this ship was indeed up to scratch, they said yes we would receive the normal 5 star luxury cruise experience..... basically they didn't tell the truth as it was anything but. Our $1000 a night suite had worn out soft furnishings and a heavily stained carpet that we avoided walking on with bare feet, the public room soft furnings were also worn and drab, a bit like a care home lounge. The menu choice was restricted to items that had not run out as they reduced stock pre refit which is where the ship will spend the rest of Feb 2018 in a dry dock....they even started to dismantle the ship days before we disembarked....art was removed leaving near bare bulkheads throughout the ship. Food quality was especially poor more like a cross channel ferry than a 5 star lux ship. Entertainment was dire. Staff acted like it was the end of term...which it was for many of them. Needless to say its back to Oceania and we will never trust Silverseas again. Read Less

We were were encouraged to continue our explorations along Africa's East Coast because of a very favorable experience with Silver Seas on the Silver Cloud, along Africa's West Coast, 2015, Accra to Capetown. As land/sea world travelers of over 50 years, our global adventures have included 93 cruises on all types of ships, from basic to luxury. Traveling has become increasingly difficult, expensive, and even dangerous. But even with lowered expectations, our voyage on the Silver Spirit was extremely disappointing. The ship is scheduled for dry-dock enlargement in Feb. 2018, and it seemed as though staff on board had already shut down. Entertainment on board was very average, gym poor, single lecturer not to my taste, shipboard activities practically non-existent. Food was uneven,- occasionally excellent and sometimes both poor and chaotic. Service often was patronizing. Madagascar was cancelled because of the plague, but Mozambique Island was a dismal substitute. Tours were overpriced, but necessary because of the danger. Certainly, overcharging for virtually everything does not automatically make for a "luxury" cruise. Read Less

I chose this trip because of the itinerary and Sil Seas reputation. We went to Abu Dhabi where were were looking forward to seeing the new Louvre; t it was closed on Monday when we arrived!!! Why weren't we told so that we could have gone there from Dubai where we had two days to spend? Two of the five Gulf States were not worth a visit. BTW, Silver Seas should have specified just how "long sleeves' and "appropriate attire" were defined by the mosques. Several women were not allowed in, and I managed to buy long wrap just in time. The food on board was poor!!! The breads were stale, un-warmed and the same old same old every single night. Same old desserts at night as well. Service poor on deck 4 restaurant; we came in at 8 and ended up being 20 minutes late for the ten pm show. Voices of Silver Seas were good only with soloists or duets. Hypnotist was an insult!!! Lectures were uneven: the Indian father and daughter, especially the former, were difficult to understand (accent). Maldives where we landed was a dump. Disembarking took two hours; checking into Seychelles another three. Too late to do anything there. We should have spent several days visiting the beaches and the Botanical Gardens and skipped the Maldives and two of the Emirates. Drill inadequate; our room with hundreds others sent to the theatre instead of muster station. What if theatre was on fire or flooded??? Exercise balls in gym filthy; no elastic stretch bands in sight. Read Less

We did not find the service or the food to be remarkable in any way. The better meals were at the restaurants that you had to pay extra to dine at. I am a vegetarian and basically survived on French Fries, Salad, and pizza for two weeks. They were not able to meet my vegetarian requirements. For dinner I was actually offered an omelet on several occasions. They didn't even have an omelet station for breakfast in the morning so I ended up with scrambled eggs (they were doused in butter). Nothing was made to order. I could do better in a diner or a fast food restaurant. It was so upsetting. The staff would apologize and vow to make changes but every meal was so stressful and no matter what I ordered they seemed unable or unwilling to prepare it. One night I asked for eggplant parmigiana without the cheese and they would not accommodate me saying it was already prepared. The vegetarian soups were often made with beef or chicken stock so I was not able to eat the soup. Every meal was an ordeal and it was so stressful. We would eat as many meals as we could off ship where we could easily find vegetarian options. We discussed the problem several times with the managers and they would apologize profusely but the same problem would exist at the next meal to the point that I was having anxiety attacks at the thought of going to a meal on the ship. I have been on Disney, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival cruise and all of these cruise lines were able to accommodate me sufficiently. Why, with 5 star chefs, were they not able to come up with decent vegetarian options is beyond me. I will admit there were several decent meals but it was always stressful and nothing that ever rated 5 star in my mind. My husband who is not a vegetarian thought that the food was good but not outstanding. I was just surprised that they were so unable to meet my dietary restrictions. We did meet wonderful people on the cruise but I did hear other people make statements that the food was not as good as it should have been. We were also disappointment in the excursions. We went on one and then cancelled the others because we were so disappointed. Several of our fellow cruisers walks out of the excursion tour because the tour guide did not speak English well and did not seem to have any real knowledge of the sights he was showing us. Read Less

We went on a 7 day trip from Athens to Venice. This was a great itinerary with many wonderful stops. It was the main reason we selected this cruise. We thought the excursions were very good. We only booked the half day or shorter ones but we did do one everyday . We booked our own in Venice because Silversea wait listed us on the one we wanted. We thought that was unusual since we booked very soon after they became available. They told us it was available once we boarded but we already had paid for a different one online. The food was not amazing but fine.. We did not eat at any of the restaurants which required an extra fee. There is only one restaurant that does not require reservations out of all the dining options. The service was sporadic . At times it would be very good and at other times it seemed you were ignored. The entertainers gave it their all and we appreciated that. We had no problems with embarkation or debarkation. The biggest deal breaker for us was the cabin . The ship is said to be non-smoking . The hallway outside our cabin smelled of cigarette smoke the first day. By the third to fourth day , inside our cabin smelled like smoke, especially in the evening and through the night. We made several attempts to alert the staff. They sent personnel but they did nothing to change the situation. We found it unacceptable, especially being medical professionals ourselves, for a luxury cruise line to have cigarette smoke venting into a cabin and take no measures to rectify the problem. Overall,we will not choose Silversea again. Read Less

Silversea Cruise Critique: Athens to Venice September 21 to September 28, 2027 The Silversea doesn't compare in its service, in the quality of its staff nor in its overall attitude to the Seabourn. Here are a few examples: Food: The cuisine is too nouvelle: ‘too cutesy by half’. The portions are small; odd combinations that don't work together; poorly prepared, and frequently luke-warm. Dinner entrees with incredibly sized entree portions: One night my entree had only 3 scallops and another only 3 raviolis. There is no choice if you want to order wine by the glass. For example, if you want a glass of red wine, you get whatever they are offering that day; otherwise you must buy a bottle. The choice of 2 or 3 room service appetizers were limited and nontraditional. No shrimp cocktail; no antipasti (and this is an Italian ship); no pate or assortment of cheeses or nuts; and no free caviar. Staff: The personnel do not seem to have a service orientation. Most of the staff are genuinely disinterested and appear to be ‘working’ by rote. The maître d ’hotels appear annoyed if you don't like the location of the table they offer you at meals and are disgruntled if you ask them to find a different one. Disagreeable and borderline surly restaurant managers spend more time talking to each other than helping guests. Waiter staffs who only want to do the expedient thing: dish the food at you and move on so they can wrap up their meal service chores. Their touted 'butler' service is over rated. When ours wasn’t busy looking for a tip, he caught a cold which my wife then caught. Shore Excursions: The arrangements of the timing of the ship getting into each port and the shore excursions are poorly planned. Instead of arriving at 8 am and starting a shore excursion at 8:15 am, if the ship were to arrive a little later, and depart a little later, the shore excursion could occur later. This is particularly important for excursions that involve swimming when that activity should occur in a hotter part of the day. Many of the shore excursions/ports of call were not well thought out and in at least one case, passengers complained and a partial refund was obtained from the shore operator. Their brochure offered a transfer excursion in Venice on disembarkation day as part of the transfer to the hotel. The offer was perfectly clear and in plain English. But in a bait and switch move, they reneged on that option. Miscellaneous: Wi-Fi was way over priced and then worked only sporadically and inconsistently. A polite inquiry was summarily dismissed and not treated with any effort to understand or investigate. Generally the atmosphere on this cruise was one of being 'nickeled and dimed': an extra charge for everything. Bottom Line: They are chintzy while trying to appear ritzy. The Silversea cruise line is not worth the price and certainly doesn't compare to the Seabourn. Read Less

I'm afraid that Silversea has gone downhill since last I sailed with them on the Silver Spirit. There's a sense that someone somewhere high up has enforced cost cutting and that there's a malaise affecting some, many even, of the staff. The food has nose dived into novelty crockery as a substitute for really good cooking and consequently majors on elaborate concept and presentation at the expense of quality. We ate at all of the on-baord restaurants and sadly, though Seishin was great and Champagne pretty good (apart from the appallingly slow service) things went downhill from there. The Restaurant was reasonable, the Grill depressing and La Terraza too variable (fair lunches, poor dinner). Worst was Stars which, one night was fair and another was - well, there's no polite way of saying it. Overall they need to go back to basics on food: its ambition should be to taste delicious and if it can then tick the boxes contemporary fancy presentation and theme, that's fine. But at the moment the cart is in front of the horse. It was a relief to eat on shore from time to time - and not at fancy places either. Service was often chaotic and sometimes just bad tempered, though many members of staff were excellent. Don't try getting a coffee at breakfast at La Terraza unless you order it quite a while before you go to get your food. Cabins: really nice, spacious, comfortable, great linens and pillows and beds and toiletries, lovely butler. Overall, the luxury is mostly in the 'lifestyle' marketing. The reality is a bit depressing and literally everyone in our large group agreed with this. It isn't the value it used to be and it needs to drop the gimmicks and focus on getting the key things - service and quality of cuisine - right. Read Less

Every couple of years, a group of us (on average 15-20) will take a luxury cruise. It is an opportunity to treat ourselves and to see parts of the world we've never seen. Unfortunately, this year was the year of disappoint for our cruising experience. Everything was difficult -- booking a tour, trying to get help, trying to make reservations at restaurants. Any time we asked for help, the first response was "That's not possible", instead of "I will look into that and try to help you." We even jokingly started calling certain service personnel "Dr. No" because they kept saying "No" to everything. Separately from the service, with very few exceptions the food was mediocre at best, and generally poor most nights in main dining hall. Unfortunately, all of the smaller restaurants were booked or didn't have the capacity to absorb more than a few dozen people (if that). So, we were not able to make alternate arrangements. I would not recommend this cruise or Silversea to anyone unless they change their attitude, the quality of service, the quality of food and update the ship. Read Less

Our review may seem harsh, however, we are rating our experience on the Silver Spirit to numerous Seabourn cruises over the last seven years. There is no comparison. We were in the owners suite (No. 802) on this trip and have booked the same level suite on Seabourn so we feel our comments are fair and balanced. 1)The ship seemed tired and in need of an update; the public areas and the bars did not have any energy and our entire experience was boring. . 2)Our cabin also needed an update (i.e. furniture, carpet, etc.). The air conditioning was sadly lacking and even after multiple visits from engineering the room never really cooled off. The curtains had to be drawn all day, every date to abate the heat, thus we never had an opportunity to enjoy exterior views. 3)Dining was our biggest disappointment. Menu choices were limited and varied little from day to day. The room service menu was very limited and the food was tasteless.The only exceptional meal we had was in the French Restaurant (which had the same menu every night of our cruise). No comparison to what we have experienced on multiple Seaborn ships. 4)Service: Although the "language of the ship" was English, staff and crew generally spoke languages other than English when talking to each other. No one, other than our butler, ever learned our names and never used our names without first determining our suite number. Even though we were in a premium suite we never met any of the senior crew members or officers. Ports and shore excursions were great, but they were not the ship's program. They were arranged by David Morris and/or our Dallas travel agent. We will not be sailing again on a Silver Seas ship. Read Less

My last cruise was over 10+ years ago on a mega ship with 4500 guests so this cruise must be on a different level. Sorry to say but the mega ship is on a much higher level. All of the restaurants service were agonizingly slow. Each meal would take 3-4 hours to finish. The wait staff didn't bother to remember our names even though they had ipads with our names and pictures while taking our orders every time. We gave up on eating at the restaurant, was just tired of having to wait so long for bad food and service. We end up just ordering burger and fires from room service on most nights. Over all the staff were nice and friendly but that is expected in any service industry. I can't comment about the shows because they were usually almost over when dinner was done. Luckily, we only booked 2 excursions through SilverSea. It was nothing special, big bus, time limits and local guides. We found that booking a local privet car and guide at the port was the way to go. We got to see and go to places where the big buses can't go. So why did I book with Silversea? It was on the recommendations of friends who averages 100+ sailing days per year with Silversea. Long story short, they and many other guests were booking their next trip on other cruise lines while we still had 8 days left on this cruise. I personally will not be booking with Silversea again. I'm looking to book on a new cruise line by a major luxury hotel brand. Read Less

We were given the incorrect embarkation dock. I had to call my American Express agent in Canada (from Lisbon) for her to call the company in Fort Lauderdale to find out where the driver should take us. Our cabin stunk of cigarette smoke. We asked to be moved. They could not accommodate us. On the day of disembarkation we were put on a 5:30am transfer to CDG. Our flights were 1:15pm and 8:10pm respectively. We asked to be put on a later transfer. Reception said that the 8:30am bus was full and that they could not accommodate us. We asked if they could arrange a taxi. Reception said that they could not. We left the ship at 8:00am with the hope of getting a taxi. Seeing that the 8:30am bus was still there I asked ground crew if there was space. There was and we took the bus to CDG. I noted that there were 16-empty seats. I wish to add that I have more than 300-days with Silversea, I have sailed with Seabourn, Regent, and Crystal. Read Less

We chose this cruise upon the advice of friends who were also going with us..total of 8 adults. Checking in was fine, but once on the ship, disappointed in the presentation of the staff. The ship was old and worn, the staff did not seem happy to be there. As walking around the ship, we found that every aspect of it was dated. Our suite was spacious, but found they did not "clean" it daily. There was a ring on the table on the deck and it was there the entire trip. The butler was a nice touch, but in all honesty, didn't do anything really special. Dining....well, it was not the best. Waiters could care less, for a small ship, they should have known everything about us. When we sat on the aft deck and asked for a snack, they brought us potato chips!!! The food was sub-par the entire cruise. Breakfast was pathetic and left a lot to be desired. Entertainment....again...for an "upscale" ship, terrible. Service, it must have been a first cruise, especially for the bartenders....no one ever smiled, nor did they know how to make simple mixed drinks. Excursions, they were included in the price, so no great shakes there. And even the paid ones were just "ok" We have sailed on many different cruise ships, including Crystal, (the best) and must say, this was the most disappointing ever. We wrote to Silverseas and never got any response...and will honestly, never cruise with them again. Read Less
