This was my first experience with Silversea, having travelled with around a dozen other cruise lines over the decades. Silversea wins hands down! I had the lowest (and presumably the lowliest) of cabins (428), which I jokingly referred to as being 'below the Plimsoll Line.' It was incredibly spacious, with a huge and comfortable bed, lounge suite and two armchairs, walk in robe and ample storage, a bathroom larger than my own, desk, coffee table, further mirrored ledges, and a generous ocean view. The toiletries were Bvulgari, the in-suite fridge stocked and replenished with beverages of my choice, VIP treatment from both the butler and his assistant, who despite being totally professional, felt like 'family' throughout. I also appreciated the daily newspaper, plus bulletins from my part of the world, and having the nearby laundrette was fantastic. Given my predilection for cruising - and my love of food - I reckon I'm qualified to judge the variety of menu options across Silversea's several restaurants, the quality and generosity of the servings, and the high standard of the wait staff as outstanding. Special requests were honoured when necessary, preferred wines freely offered if those chosen daily were not to your liking, imaginative and delicious cocktails always available. My late husband and I have been guilty on many an occasion of eschewing a voyage's entertainment in favour of sleep. I'm so glad I didn't on the Silver Shadow. Their entertainers were fantastic: both the onboard team and the guest saxophonist and the cello duo. Cruise Director Moss brought the house down with his own show one night. Accolades also to the wonderful pianist who never seemed to sleep, and the resident band whose musical repertoire knew no boundaries. I selfishly enjoyed many hours playing bridge (the card game, not the control centre!) and afternoon trivia with a bunch of fellow voyagers. At no time did I feel lonely as a solo traveller. Every single member of the Silver Shadow's crew went out of their way to be welcoming, kind, friendly and helpful. Extraordinary training and personal enthusiasm must lie behind their exemplary and personalised customer service skills. Acts of God brought undone our scheduled itinerary, but the ship's personnel from top to bottom all coped well and cheerfully carried on (unlike some of their guests whose plans had been scuttled in order to save their lives!). This has been a most wonderful introduction to my future relationship with Silversea. Read Less

Chose this cruise because of itinerary and Silversea reputation. Upon arrival in Singapore (pre-cruise program) we were met at the door of our hotel by Silversea Ambassador, Ni, who ultimately was the most exceptional ambassador that we have ever encountered. She arranged for early check-in and made outstanding suggestions and reservations for the days we were in Singapore. On the ship (Silver Shadow), our Butler, Guest Relations Manager, Wait Staff and Officers all provided outstanding service. My husband had an unfortunate accident on the first day of the cruise (tripped on broken curb getting off tour bus and broke his ankle) so our cruise was cut short but everyone on the ship could not have been more attentive and helpful - even the Captain sent chocolates with a "Get Well Soon" message. From a service standpoint, Silversea provided the best service we have ever encountered. As we have a food blog, we were disappointed that we were unable to experience the Specialty Dining options onboard as we had to leave the cruise early. We'll try Silversea again - just for the service! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary, rating of cruise line and were told the ship had been renovated the year before. We were hugely disappointed. The Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly, including the stops. That's where the good news ends. The staff on the ship were not well trained. The servers had these tablets they took orders on and they had pictures of all the cruisers so they could identify us but it was more of a distraction than a help because the really didn't listen to us they were more worried about writing on the tablet than listening to our orders. I think that's one reason they got everything wrong. They got it wrong nine out of ten times. Something as simple as having my cream on the table before my coffee got cold. Every morning before my coffee was poured I asked for cream for my coffee. They poured the coffee and then I asked for the cream again and then it took ten minutes for the cream to show up. This wasn't once or twice but every morning. The quality of the food was below average. We were in Australia and New Zealand and the fruit was tasteless. Nothing tasted like it should. The pastries and desserts all tasted alike. The chef did a cooking demonstration and didn't wear gloves and he was coughing all over the food. The cabin was worn out except the bathroom was very nice with two sinks and plenty of storage but we had to ask for shampoo and body lotion replacements almost like there was a shortage. The bed felt lumpy and worn to the point of needing replacement. The ship felt clean, plenty of restrooms with plenty of anti-bacterial dispensers everywhere. The entertainment was OK,not good but OK. Kirk the cruise director was excellent. The best show of the week was two nights before this ship pulled into our last stop and he did the entire show. It was the so much fun and everyone laughed and had a good time. The shore excursions were sub par as well, there was one that we all got 50% of our charge back because it was so awful. One example was Christchurch post Earthquake. They dropped us in town at some museum and told us that the bus will leave in three hours so be back by then. No map,no directions just go off. This was not even in the center of town. This was our first time on Silver Seas and will never again cruise with them. We were not alone. There were a good number of people unhappy with the ship as we were. Possibly 25% of the people. Some that had sailed with the SS previously and were upset and disappointed. This cruise is definitely for an older crowd. Younger travelers and those looking for a wild Caribbean type cruise to Alaska will be disappointed but for those of us who love scenery, good food, good wine and spirits and being waited on hand and foot, this is the cruise for you. From the moment we embarked, everyone was exceedingly polite. Our stateroom was continually refreshed and the mini-fridge kept well stocked. Everything is included, except shore excursions and premium spirits. Our debarkation process was efficient but because of an ice dam collapse our train ride from Seward to the Anchorage airport was cancelled. They re-loaded us to the ship to await motor coaches and I was anticipating just having to sit there. The cruise line opened up all areas except the staterooms, opened the bar, brought us food and treated us as if we were still cruising even though ours was over. Professionalism at its finest. I would definitely take this cruise and cruise line again. Read Less
