Great experiences previously with Viking River Cruises and wanted to try their ocean small ships. This ship was 4 times larger than the Viking longships, but we never felt crowded. There were so many places to find a quiet spot to hang out, it felt like a private resort. Spa was excellent with full use of hydro therapy circuit at no additional charge. Food was excellent. Never had to wait for anything with open seating. Main dining room was large and fairly noisy. We we traveling as a group of nine and found the World Cafe buffet dining to be more than suitable for our group. Infinite choices, never rushed, attentive service by staff at all times. Explorers Lounge on top deck was wonderful place to sit and have a snack/drink at any time of day. Never crowded. All staff were excellent. Never without a smile on their face and showed true desire to meet your needs. Including the captain who was happy to stop and talk while walking his rounds on deck. We loved the experience and have already booked our 2020 Viking cruise from Bali to Sidney. Can't wait to go! Read Less

The Viking name has been synonymous with excellence. We were so happy when they announced they were sailing in Alaska. It was our dream come true! This was a special cruise for my husband’s 70th and his retirement. Everything and everyone on this ship exceeded our expectations. The twice a day housecleaning made it that more special. The dining was easy and never included lines for buffet and we always got into the Restaurant with a group of six. We appreciate that Viking ocean cruises require passengers to be 18 or older. Our one included shore excursion at Icy Strait was not of the caliber that I expected. High school students performing a story was sweet but wasn’t what was described in material. We did enjoy the nightly entertainment and noticed all the entertainers participated almost every morning in the disembarkation and return to ship by handing out water, towels etc. I can’t wait to go on another cruise. Hopefully we will be in France river cruise in two years. Read Less

Food is great. Boat is beautiful and so clean. Already booked another cruise. Can fit luggage under bed. Has more drawer space. Loved our balcony. Do the helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier and dog sledding. Loved the train ride and the excursion on the Deadliest sea boat. Manifred I had excellent steaks. Loved not always having announcements, no children, and older crowd. This was our 2nd cruise with Viking. The spa is wonderful. The pools excellent. Bar service is above all other. Entertainment could be a little better. Love having wine, beer, soft drinks included. And being able to stay pre or post at beginning and end ports. Airfare is great. Top of the line in cruises as far as I am concerned. Read Less

With daughter and son-in-law to celebrate birthdays and anniversary. Daughter has serious food issues, and the crew took fabulous care of her. The food is good, especially liked the buffets. The chef made several beautiful chocolate cakes for us. The ship is beautiful, and different from other ships we have been on. We loved our cabin, a penthouse suite. Loved the double sinks and large shower. The bed was wonderful. Enjoyed the planetarium shows, a unique feature. Enjoyed the shore excursions, but especially enjoyed sitting and reading in the afternoons. Since the was an inland passage crude, the view were wonderful. The onboard lectures were always top notch and very interesting and informative. ON the minus side, one night our Halibut was way over cooked, but that was just one occasion. The embarkation could not have been smoother. We also loved the public entertainment - very talented people. We would definitely sail again with Viking. PS loved the bird sounds in public bathrooms. We joined my brother Mike Martin, his wife Sherry on this cruise. My brother had wanted to sail the Inside Passage on an Alaskan cruise. My husband and I had cruised to Alaska on two other occasions but enjoyed it so much that we were glad to go again. The embarkation went smoothly. I was glad we didn't have to wait to board ship when we arrived at the dock. For desembarkation I suggest that passengers be made aware that they can wait onboard until their color group is called My cabin review is below. Our dining experience was excellent due to the expertise of the kitchen staff. The consistently provided us delicious meals. The wait staff were always very friendly and attentive to our needs. We thoroughly enjoyed the Orion Vocalists performances, especially the ABBA Songbook and the Beatles Songbook. We also very much enjoyed the Viking Classical Duo performance of Movie Magic. We enjoyed our shore excursions especially the Kenai Fjords by boat near Seward, the Columbia Glacier Cruise near Valdez and the Potlach Totem Park near Ketchikan. Read Less

Everything about the cruise was top notch. Accommodations were outstanding and we really enjoyed the variety of dining options and special events. We especially enjoyed trying the steam and regular saunas, cold plunge pool and 'snow' room ... quite a unique experience. There were learning experiences at every turn from pictures with explanatory plaques lining the hallways to the displayed artwork with attached narratives. However, the thing that continues to make Viking our favorite cruise line is the service. We didn't encounter one surly or indifferent crew member. We were so amazed that we ended up asking the ones we became close to why they chose Viking and, to a person, they said that the overall package and treatment Viking extends to them is far better than cruise line(s) they had worked for before. The theme was that Viking was 'family' and they were treated as such. We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience. Read Less

Alaska has been on our bucket list for years, and when Viking announced they would be sailing to Alaska we jumped at the opportunity, having experienced a Viking River Cruise in 2014, the Romantic Danube. The Viking Orion had not yet been completed when we made our reservations, so watching her development was exciting. Viking truly has transported the finest of their river cruise ships into their ocean cruise ships, and it felt like coming home when we boarded at Seward. One aspect of the cruise that was attractive to us was the specific itinerary that included more of Alaska than just the fabled Inside Passage. We did the pre-cruise extension in Anchorage, where Viking picked us up at the Anchorage airport and transported us to the Anchorage Hilton for 2 nights, then onward from Anchorage to Seward to join the ship. The weather was not always cooperative and in Seward it was raining and chilly outside, but warm and welcoming onboard. Embarkation was smooth and fast, and the primary downside was the distance we had to walk from the point where we cleared security to the ship itself mostly in the rain. From then on the weather was either cloudy and cool or clouds and sun. Valdez was beautiful, sunny and clear; overcast at Hubbard Glacier and Icy Strait Point and Skagway, sunny and warm at Juneau, mostly sunny at Sitka, cloudy at Ketchikan, and gloriously sunny on arrival at Vancouver. Of the many attributes offered by Viking, having all outside cabins with balconies was a definite plus, the small size was wonderful with just 930 passengers, and perhaps the one consistent comment we heard was how thankful our shipmates were that there were no children (us included). Folks, this is not a party ship, yet it packs in more entertainment options than are possible to sample in the 11 days we had available. We would definitely cruise again with Viking Ocean and River Cruises. Read Less

Viking has EVERY THING covered. From the moment you are met at the airport you are taken care of. The ship was beautiful and sparkling clean. Our cabin spacious and room Stuart outstanding. Dining choices were plentiful, delicious with fabulous service. We never felt crowded and enjoyed all the different spaces to relax. So happy to be on a smaller cruise ship. We were so glad not to fuss with formal nights. The enrichment program provides all kinds of wonderful experiences and opportunities. The included and optional excursions were plentiful with so many choices, we could of spent numerous days at any one port. Loved all our excursions. The My Viking Journey web link was great! We were prepared, organized and well informed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and exploring on the link. Making reservations for excursions and special dining plans helpful. My husband and I even made reservations for our next Viking cruise to the Mediterranean! Read Less

Chose Viking because of a wonderful experience with their Danube cruise. Viking has very well trained individuals working with them. We too picked the Orion as it was one of the smaller vessels in the Alaskan area with only about 900 guests. Many times we wondered where all of the people were... The Orion has so many quiet areas where you may sit or lounge. Our cabin steward was fantastic, almost overly so. The Orion was fairly new and so very well decorated. Would love to go on more Viking cruises. Wish they had a cruise just sailing in and around the Greek Isles. We too might look at the New Zealand and Australian cruise. I was not impressed with the handling of the arriving and the check in at our departure hotel. The Viking associates were not very helpful there. When we took the Danube cruise, the post hotel experience was wonderful with sight seeing and dining suggestions. Glad that we did not have fancy or dress up nights. I believe that Viking has the best overall product on the market. The cruise ship was up to Viking normal high standards. The cabin was well prepared and continually tidied and readied..the cabin service usually forgot we didn`t wanted our beds turned back etc but minor point. We were very fortunate with some excellent weather throughout the voyage. The atmosphere on board was very relaxed throughout. The food was excellent and we much prefer the more relaxed format in the self service area as standards are not compromised at all. Mrs Wood`s hair appointment was average. Some of the included excursions were disappointing and the game needs to be upped here as we felt this was part of pushing you to pay for the far better extras ones. One of them just dropped us off in town to do our own thing.Juneau excursion was unnecessarily rushed and we had little time to enjoy the glacier facilities etc.Our extra whale watching at Icy strait Point was very good indeed. The lectures and talks were generally very good and the delivery was interesting and relaxed with most but not all of them.Kathy Slamp we found the best of them. Read Less

Priori river cruise with Viking and had a wonderful experience. Food was fantastic, service was stellar, everything was fantastic. The ports of call were interesting, shore excursions were very good (although, pricey, but that is common in Alaska). Loved the fact that they had a non-denominational Sunday service for those who were interested in attending and unable to get to a place of worship due to cruise schedule. Staff goes to great lengths to ensure you have everything you need. Disembarkation and embarkation procedures were thoroughly explained and went smoothly. My only two suggestions for improvement would be instead of having to use the room key for everything, arm bands with the chip would be much more convenient, and more show times for the on board planetarium. Fitness center was awesome, plenty of equipment. I took advantage of the opportunity for a massage and the spa was wonderful as well. Read Less

We have done 3 Viking River cruises and enjoyed them all. So, we decided it was time to try a Viking Ocean cruise. First and foremost, Viking needs to have BETTER included excursions. In just about every port the included excursion was really no better than us getting off the ship to explore the little Alaska town we were in. In-fact, in Ketichikan we bought our own tickets to attend a "Lumberjack Show" (lasted just over 1 hr), and they cost $35pp. Why couldn't Viking have offered that as an included excursion? Bottom Line: Offer better included excursions and try and have more than 1 available in each port! Second, remove the curtains in the "Living Room", by the coffee bar and on the 2nd level. You can't see thru this material and it would be nice while your having a drink or coffee to see the scenery!! Third, you REALLY need to train your bartenders better. After trying two Pina Colada's and a frozen Daiquiri I gave up on any frozen offering. Each time the ice was not pulverized enough so when you tried using the straw, it would always get clogged. And yes, I went to THREE different bars and had the same very poor results. Hell, the first time my wife ordered a Banana Daiquiri, they brought it to her in a martini glass. No kidding, a Martini glass. Lastly, the entertainment was, for the most part, a joke. Every night a member of the ship's staff "entertained". The 4-some (2 guys, 2 gals) who did the Beatles show and the Abba show did a pretty good job, but the overall result was very un-polished and amateurish. We never (on a 10-night cruise), had a "head-liner" or a professional comedian or magician. Kudo's to the guys and gals who worked the stage EVERY night, but they should be "fill-in" acts not the main show each and EVERY night!!! If VIKING wants to compete with Azamara and Oceania they need to heed these words and I am sure the words of many other seasoned travelers. We have done one Azamara cruise, and VIKING isn't even close to them when it comes to food quality (and choices), entertainment, and overall service. We haven't tried Oceania yet, but have friends who have done both (Viking and Oceania), and MUCH prefer Oceania. Read Less

We were on Viking in the Caribbean and it was great so we decided when they open up the Alaska cruise we are going so we booked it two years ahead time . The flight in should have been earlier we lost the first day because the flight was so late in the day , but the ship was nice and the cabin was clean and roomy the dining was really good . The ports were great and organized for the excursions . The service is bar none they know you name and your wine choice at the dining rooms after a day or two. The servers are very friendly and get to know you . The cleaning crew is also wonderful doing anything to make you feel at home. I would highly recommend this cruise with Viking they make the overall trip special and memorable. I chose this cruise because my husband and I wanted to see Alaska--but not on a huge ship. The Orion was perfect with passengers numbering about 950. The ship was beautiful and our deluxe veranda cabin was great. The ship had everything a person could ask for. The dining options provided ambience, amazing choices, and delicious food. There was plenty to do onboard--special presentations, cocktail lounges with musical entertainment, dancing, and shows with terrific talent. There was a pool and games on deck and in the lounges. My husband also used the fitness center which was very important to him since he interrupted a physical therapy regimen to go on the trip. Finally, the staff was above compare. The included excursions were fine but carefully chosen extra excursions really added to the trip. We chose the helicopter/dog mushing in Seward (expensive but worth the splurge), glacier sightseeing by boat, Skagway by Streetcar, the railroad ride to White Pass, and whale watching. One suggsestion for couples traveling together. Book the same category room. My husband and I booked the deluxe veranda but my cousin and her husband, with whom we were traveling, booked one level up--the deluxe veranda with more square footage. We did not know that they would be able to book restaurants and excursions 10 days before we could. We had planned our choices ahead of time, but most of what we had chosen was not available to us 10 days after they booked. However, we enjoyed this trip so much that we booked a river cruise (our second cruise) with Viking for next year. Read Less

Have done Viking Ocean before and realized that this was the first year that they were doing the Alaska route. We were so impressed with our previous experience, we wanted to try them again. The Viking Orion is a beautiful ship and the staff keep it looking brand new every day. We particularly enjoyed the various dining options - the World Cafe, The Restaurant and the pool side cafe. Each has its own ambience and type of service, but each is equal in quality and service. We also enjoyed a session in the planetarium which is new for Viking Ocean. Something different that we enjoyed. Spent several sessions in the Spa and had wonderful treatments. Felt like new people when we left. We spaced them between the more demanding excursion days so that we would be relaxed after those days. Treatments were professional and awesome. Thought the overall experience was wonderful! We booked this cruise directly through Viking in November 2017 - 18 months prior to departure. We were advised at that time we could upgrade flights as soon as flights became available. We duly did this through Viking. They organised the flights on our behalf. Five weeks prior to departure for Seward, Alaska we were contacted by Viking and advised that we would need an earlier flight to get us to Seward on time for the cruise. As we were taking a regional flight they advised that we could depart 24 hrs before the previous arrangements and spend a night and day at Heathrow airport. This was perceived as unacceptable. After much “discussion” we finally agreed to fly out to Alaska one day earlier than Viking had scheduled. Not an encouraging start to our cruise or to showcase their organisational skills. The cruise overall went well. Orion is a beautiful ship and our Stateroom on Deck 8 was very well appointed and we were looked after vey well by our Personal Stateroom Attendant. We were unfortunately disappointed overall with the standard of evening meals. Food in the Restaurant was as good as that in Manfredi’s but standards at the Chef’sTable were quite poor. Vegetables served were consistently overcooked in all restaurants and requests for veg to be served al dente were ignored. Evening meals were therefore variable. Service in the restaurants tended to be inconsistent and erratic. Requests for a pre meal drink whilst waiting to be joined by fellow travellers at the table took so long that the meal was alrady served before the wine arrived. We bought the premium wine package but standards of wine were no better than the standard package, although aperitifs / after dinner drinks etc were included in this plan. We were led to believe wine would be of a higher standard. We had the opportunity to make three reservations at the Chef’s Table. The one experience was enough - the menu was limited and standards not high enough. We booked extensive excursions, this being a once in a lifetime experience. Largely they were good but the Viking grading system was yet again inconsistent. Demanding, moderate, easy categorisation for excursions was variable. At Icy Strait Point we went on a “demanding” wilderness hike which compared with a gentle stroll so limited that the excursion leader stopped frequently to expand time taken. On our return we expressed concern with othe guests about our experience as on this occasion no evaluation sheets were dustributed. Viking staff reaction was disappointing. They did not want to know. At Juneau poor weather that had been forecast well in advance meant that our helicopter glacier trip could not go ahead. It was very obvious on that day that this would be the case though Viking required us to take the tender ashore, miss an opportunity to sign up for an alternative excursion only to be told that our excursion was cancelled as soon as we reached the shore. This experience could have been so much better if Viking communications were better. To be fair our trip was refunded but any valuable excursion in Juneau was lost. You will appreciate that we are unlikely to visit Juneau again so this was frustrating. When the cruise came to an end we had bought a post cruise extension organised by Viking in Vancouver. It cost £389 per person for 2 nights bed and breakfast. Our allocated hotel the Regency Hyatt was relatively disappointing particularly because breakfast was served to Viking guests in a large windowless conference room. The standard of food was poor but most importantly was diffferent to the standard of food served to non Viking guests in the main restaurant. For example the strawberries, fresh smoked salmon and extensive range were missing and replaced by cheap toast bread, melon as the only fruit available by way of example. Overall, the hotel on Burrard Street had a very tired feel although staff were very helpful. Viking did not ask for any feedback on this section if our experience. We gave feedback to the Viking rep at the Regency Hyatt who was lovely and very helpful but she explained we would have to contact Viking directly to complain. Despite this we enjoyed our tine in Vancouver it is a beautiful city. We tried to ignore our annoyance regarding lack of value for money. You may imagine we invested heavily on the cruise and prior to our experience were happy to do so. It did not overall live up to expectations. With hindsight we would have gone with another small ship provider or settled for a standard cabin as it was we were in a Junior Penthouse Stateroom (8003). As of writing we still have not received the refund from our abortive helicopter trip. Written contact via their contact form and a telephone call have unfortunately met with no response. We are not surprised given our overall experience of Viking Oceanic Cruises communications and organisation - or lack. Read Less

Before booking our Alaskan cruise with Viking, my husband and I did extensive research about not only Viking, but many competitors as well. We feel, we got exactly what we expected and found that some of the complaints we did hear were from passengers who had no idea what they signed up for and then complained about it. Viking was a great experience for us and exactly what we wanted in an ocean vacation. Viking was enticing to us for what it offers, but for many things it does not offer as well. We wanted a cruise with no casinos, no children, no photographers snapping pictures constantly which we've lived through before, only a very small area for smokers, no rides/fancy water slides, and no charge for self-service laundry or drinks. My husband and I are avid life long learners. We wanted a cruise with like minded travelers who were interested in learning as much as possible. We got that! We enjoyed the many learning opportunities including the small Viking museum on board, port talks, enrichment videos on the cabin television, and Explorers' Dome. There were also guest lectures and talks with the Viking resident historian. We ran out of time to do all those educational options, but will next cruise! We really enjoyed all the dining experiences. Our room service for breakfast was right on time and what we ordered, The World Cafe offered a variety of food. We always enjoyed what we got and the many seating options affording us amazing views. We ate at Manfredi's twice and The Chef's Table three times. Manfredi's is an Italian restaurant, and the food was superb. We truly enjoyed The Chef's Table experience which we will caution is not for everyone. There's a set menu with paired wine for each course. You need to really be a foodie and be adventurous with your palate. We are, so we loved trying new food and wine. Again, we researched the dining options and knew exactly what we were getting. Plus all menus are posted on the cabin tv's, Voyager app, and outside the restaurants. The Restaurant was an excellent dining option as well. We enjoyed everything we ordered. One of our favorite treats was at Mamsen's. We went down early for breakfast several mornings and had their traditional Norwegian waffle with coffee where we could sit in the front of the ship relaxing with an ocean view and exceptional service. We did not purchase the optional alcoholic beverage package, but instead opted for the included wines. We really enjoyed the variety of wines from various parts of the world we were offered at lunch and dinner. We never had to wait long for a table or our food. The reason we didn't give dining a five star, we would have given it a 4.5 star if it were an option, is we felt there should have been more Alaskan food options which was advertised. We truly enjoyed the LivNordic Spa with snow grotto, steam sauna, jacuzzi, mineral pool, and heated loungers. It was so refreshing and relaxing. We went to the spa eight out of our ten days and were able to enjoy it each time with minimal passengers present. The staff was always making sure everything was in tip-top condition and took the time to get to know us and chat with us for as long as we wanted to continue talking. The service was exceptional. All crew members seemed genuinely happy and had amazing memories. When we entered many of the eating venues, the servers knew our preferences without even asking and greeted us warmly. They always treated us with respect and would spend many minutes just chatting with us. They took very good care of us. They not only greeted us, asked us how we were doing, attended to any concerns we had, but also kept the ship very clean in all the public areas and our cabin. As we've said before, we knew exactly what to expect for all our shore excursions. Again, we heard some complaints from passengers who didn't read what they were buying and then complained it wasn't what they thought. All of our purchased excursions were a five star except one. We did a whale watching tour, kayaking among the glaciers, bus/train ride to the Yukon, and Zodiac experience. We would give all those excursions a five star. The taste of Juneau was a bit disappointing as it was suppose to be more hands on cooking and learning about Alaskan cuisine than what it was. We did three free excursions and enjoyed two of the three. It would be nice if Viking had two free options - one for people with mobility issues and one for people who can do a tour that's moderate and above. We understand to make the free excursion available to everyone, it had to be a bus tour with easy walks, but it would have been nice to have more variety for the free excursion. Passengers also need to remember the amount or variety of animals seen on excursions is not within Viking's control nor is the weather. Come prepared. We were grateful to see what wild life we saw. We enjoyed the entertainment. The pianist and violinists that performed in the atrium were very talented. We also went to most of the shows in the theater where we could sing along and enjoy very fun performers. The cruise director and assistant cruise director were so warm and welcoming. They did a superb job both performing and making sure all activities ran smoothly. We also noticed how many passengers were into fitness and taking the stairs rather than the elevators. That was refreshing as well as not having to walk through several smoking areas to get to our destination. We met so many friendly passengers from all over the world. While we were among some of the youngest, we're both 52, we felt very comfortable and enjoyed ourselves. There were many opportunities to visit other passengers if we wanted during meals or the Wintergarden's tea time which we thoroughly enjoyed as well as opportunities to find a quiet, private spot where we could just enjoy each other. We were happy with all aspects of our cruise. Although there were some minor issues, there was nothing that would deter us from going on Viking again. It was truly a memorable voyage. Read Less
