I recently took a cruise from Boston to Bermuda 9/31/18-10/7/18. I love taking the cruise ship out of Boston it’s very convenient for us being only 45 minutes away, no flying. Also, Royal Caribbean leaves on Sunday afternoon at 5:00. Our designated arrival time was the earliest scheduled for between 10:30-11:30, we were there at 10:15 sharp and we were allowed to board the ship at 10:25…….. 10 minutes later. I love this!!! NCL makes you wait until noon. I know it’s petty……. but I love that little perk! Yes! Being a gold member I did have priority boarding anyway. The Sunday departure is GREAT because there’s no traffic whatsoever around the cruise terminal or in or out of Boston on Sunday compared to Friday departures and arrivals on NCL. Also the construction from 93N to the terminal is complete now and it’s exit 18, right onto Congress Street and straight to the terminal entrance, very easy to get to now that the constructions done in that area! Royal Caribbean... to start……… I can’t stress this enough……. the staff was SUPERB!!!!!! They actually had crew members wearing bright yellow T shirts that read “ I can help you ask me any question you’d like”. Also the food was outstanding! from the main dinning to the buffet!!! The entire crew we engaged, was always pleasant, and willing to help! We sampled virtually everything in the buffet. Our head waiter Danny from Indonesia and his assistant waitress Elaina from Romania were the best team I’ve ever experienced on or off a ship in any restaurant! Our water glasses were never below ¾’s full, the second we were done with our entry or desert the setting was cleared……. I love that….. it shows they’re paying attention to their guests!!!! Truly a pair of professionals!! I also liked the fact that when we were sitting on the ship the waiters throughout the ship would be walking around with a variety of drinks…..NO!!! Not pushing alcohol but delivering, cold drinks such as: lemon aid, strawberry drinks, ice tea, hot coffee, hot tea, and water. Yes… of course they would take an alcohol order as well. Love that, service with a smile!!!! I have not been on a RCL cruise in 9-10 years. I am a gold member with both cruise lines. In 2009 I left from the port of Seattle, Washington on the Radiance of the Seas which was a cruise to Alaska. If you have never done it…it’s a must!! For the past 7 years I have been taking the NCL Dawn from Boston to Bermuda. What a difference! I read on line the Dawn would be repositioning south and the NCL Gem would be replacing her departing from Boston on Fridays starting in 2019 at 4:00 in late April early May. The parking this year has changed from last year back to the garage, the open parking lots at the pier are now specifically for monthly parking only. Parking has increased from $140.00 a week in 2017 to $175.00 this year :( Ouch!! It has changed ownership, but they now take Master, Visa, Amex, and I believe Discover, NO MORE CASH PAYMENTS!! Our room location was deck 10 1002 forward sweet 2 port side (left) we always get a balcony forward this seems to be the quietest part of the ship for us. Plus 1 floor up for the pool, food and sun, 3 floors down to the theater. Now being located on deck 10 which on this ship just happens to be the first deck under the pool deck and jogging track. I could hear the joggers very early in the morning but it was very, very faint. There are plenty of elevators on board no problem with overcrowding or excessive waiting. We were allowed in our rooms at 1:00 and had our luggage by 5:00. The ship was immaculate!!! The room was adequate like all the rest but…. the bathroom shower was very, very tight!!! I have to say the shower is very small and the only negative thing on the ship!! I’m 6’ tall 180 lbs. on the thin side and I was bumping and banging my elbows the whole time I was in there….. it’s tight!! Think NCL dawns toilet area with the sliding door, That’s the size of your shower. It’s very small!! All and All GREAT trip! Read Less

Starting with my first Royal Caribbean Cruise 15yrs ago, then multiple Carnival Cruises after that, we decided to choose Royal Caribbean again because of how much we enjoyed the first one. After 5 Cruises prior to this one in 2018, I’d consider myself experienced and because of that, I have realistic expectations of what a Cruise should entail. Well, unfortunately this one was the WORST ship (Serenade of the Seas) I’ve been on. We travelled with a group of family consisting of ten people in total - 6 adults and 4 children. Three children under the age 10, one being 12 and the adults ranging from 40yrs of age to 60 yrs of age. We were amongst 1800 senior citizens, if not more! (Nothing against seniors, for the record) They should just market this Cruise for seniors, and not families traveling with little ones. 2/3 pools were closed on the ship. Jumbo TV over the main area was broken so there were no movie nights for the entire 7 day duration of the Cruise. Kid friendly night club was closed, as well as most of the child friendly activities weren’t running. There’s one indoor pool on the boat, which was considered “adult only” however nobody mentions that children are allowed to swim 2hrs per day during a scheduled period until the very last day of the Cruise - THANKS! The formal dining service was not very good and the food was mediocre at best. The Matradee (short, balding, mid 50’s, Greek type fellow) responsible for looking after the guests dining experience, purposely ignored our table every night, only catering to the senior citizens. It was almost comical watching him squirm and go out of his way to Ignore our table. We travelled in a pack of 10, it would be pretty hard not to see us!! The daycare centre was phenomenal and for the kids, one of the highlights of the trip. They were excellent with our kids and they enjoyed their time & activities at “Adventure Ocean”. The boat was very dated and it showed in all areas of the ship, There was next to no child friendly live entertainment and unless you wanted to listen to vulgarity, you were out of luck. This Cruise fell WAY below my expectations, especially for the high standard I remembered Royal Caribbean to have. It was such a bad experience, I have no reason to ever book again with them. Carnival Cruise line was way better. SO much more of a friendlier family, single and couples ship and to top it off....so much more affordable!! Royal Caribbean, you dropped the ball big time!! My friend and I chose this cruise bc it was the only 5 day cruise out of Boston with the New England and Canada intinerary. Our boarding was delayed because the Coast guard wanted to inspect the ship due to Serenade returning from a summer overseas...at least we knew the ship was safe!! You could also see Royal’s procedures in place to ensure a smooth boarding process and it was. It’s just that the ship was completely booked so there were a lot of people boarding at once rather than trickling on all day. The rooms opened promptly at 2. Our room was very nice and clean and our room attendant Juliarta was amazing...he made our cruise special with his attentiveness, efficiency and sense of humor! We were on the starboard side of the ship and we got both sunrise and sunset from our balcony! We stopped in the R Bar in the Centrum first and this turned out to be our favorite place to hang out.. there was a guitar player who entertained there a couple of times who was amazing! We also enjoyed Vintages and the Schooner for trivia..we received great service from the staff in all of these places! The ship itself is beautiful with different artwork in every corner hallway and stairwell, they even have a champagne art auction! The food in all of the venues was very good...service even better...we were especially impressed with the lunch buffet in Reflections dining room and the nice hot food in the Windjammer! We even had someone bringing us drinks and clearing things for us in the Windjammer. We dined in Giovanni’s and Chops and the service and food was second to none! We did Giovanni’s for 1st nite done right and it was only $20...There are so many choices to eat..just not in Rita’s Cantina, which was disappointing bc we wanted Mexican food with Margaritas! The excursions we took on this cruise were really great! 3 hour tour of Peggy’s Cove in Halifax and the trolley tour of St John. 1 1/2 hours...then we hopped off at the City market and walked back to the ship. There was a flea market inside a white tent specifically for cruise ship travelers, in St John...down the street and on your left of the terminal...Everyone in Canada takes American dollars! And they reduce the price for you...$20 Canadian and $17 American..I can’t say enough about how friendly everyone is in Canada!! Some people complained that they didn’t enjoy their 6 hour tours in both ports!, but I can’t even imagine touring for that long! I would suggest a shorter excursion and then finishing off with your own tour/ lunch by yourself..It’s perfectly safe and easy to get around in these city’s.. Bar Harbor was a different story because we were completely fogged in and we had to go thru immigration on the ship, but they couldn’t find the ship due to the fog! It backed everything up bc it was a slow process getting off, with excursion boats arriving late and only 2 tenders unloading everyone..But RC made up for it by giving us an extra hour in port and enlisting the help of local tour boats to get everyone back on in a timely manner!! Keep the very real possibility of fog in mind when you plan your excursions...sometimes they go anyway and you can’t see anything! There is plenty of shopping and dining in Bar Harbor if you choose not to do an excursion. Disembarkation was backed up a bit bc Boston was slow in releasing the ship, but it got moving pretty quickly...our bags were waiting for us and we were in a taxi by 9:30am....it would have been longer if we had to go through immigration. Overall, I was really impressed with every aspect of this cruise...the ship, the crew, the ports and the excursions..the only hiccups were from things outside of Royal Caribbean and they did everything possible to make up for it So I can say that I recommend it highly! 2 thumbs up!! I was overall happy with cruise for the most part. I would rate the cruise as follows, 60% as fun, entertaining, and enjoyable. 40% not so much, a lot of waiting in lines on numerous occasions. Maybe this is normal, but as a veteran, the Army might be more efficient in this area and vets know what I mean, a lot of hurry up and wait. Dinning room meals were disappointing, buffet eating was better by far, more choices not as much waiting. But then you had to serve yourself, I know some people like to be waited on. Shows and entertainment venues were very good, lots of laughs. Room was better than expected, we were in room with large port hole window, I would recommend a balcony if on a warm weather cruise. This cruise had many seniors, of which I am one, so some patients is required from younger individuals. All in all I would go again in the future, I would not go on a ship that holds more than 2,500 people, I can't imagine a ship with up to 6,000 passengers. Read Less

The main reason I (we) chose this cruise was because of the venue - fall colors. Although the colors had not yet peaked, the colors were turning and were quite beautiful It's all about timing (and luck). We were just a little too early to get the full advantage of the fall colors. But the venues were great - Hallifax, Portland, Bar Harbor and Boston - all great stops. Having sailed many time of Celebrity, I did see some difference in what was supplied in the staterooms. On Celebrity I always got shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. This did not happen on the RC cruise. We only got shampoo and we had to ask for additional bars of soap half way into the cruise. The crew on the ship were fantastic - very pleasant and helpful. We are looking forward to our cruise in February on the Serenade of the Seas to the Caribbean. Read Less

Embarking at Boston around noon-ish went very smooth and fast with sunny skies and a temp near 80. A bite at Windjammer and then cabins were opened around 1:00. Performers around the pool deck as we left the harbor (with the NFL game of the week on the big screen). Giovannti's Table for the first night with our friendly server Luiz then off to the 7:15 welcome aboard show at the theater. Day two a quick tender to Bar Harbor for the Acadia Park loop and lobster bake. Beautiful scenery, sunny and 70's then the luncheon on a full lobster with mussels and potatoes. It was delicious and local craft beer was available for purchase. Trinket shopping on the main street is a must. Night two was formal night at the main dining room with Zhelyu and Oksana giving us great service with a warm and fun personality then off to another show. Day three in Portland, again Sunny and in the 70's. We did (on our own) the Portland Discovery Trolley and Portland Head Lighthouse. Our driver Gary was knowledgeable, entertaining, and above all safe as we explored back roads of the Portland area. Dinner at Windjammers gave a good variety and was as good as most buffets. Day four in St. John, cloudy and fog and could have skipped this dock if not the first time visiting. A nice park at the top of the hill but not much else. If you never seen a tidal river then the falls could be for you. Day five at Sea, rainy, did the Sushi rolling class with Chef John at Izumis. A fun and informative class with some good eats at the end (your creations). Plenty of time for the hot tub, pool, and trivia activities around the ship. Formal night two at the restaurant with the traditional lobster tail dinner. Tasty as always. Day Six at Halifax, Sunny but a little cooler, the harbor boardwalk has some nice shops and restaurants but the big event is going to Peggy's Cove. A nice bus ride to a just pretty spot to a beautiful lighthouse then a quick walk though a the cemetery where several Titanic victims are buried. Back on the ship and Windjammer again satisfies for dinner. Day Seven at Sea, Sunny, pool time and card playing day. Day Eight, Sunny and a quick and smooth disembarkation. Customs is what slowed the process down but still kept moving. A fun, fun trip. Carly B and Tito did a good job keeping us informed and having something for us to do the entire time. The band and the singers and dancers were entertaining and worth catching a time or two on board. Read Less

This was our first cruise to New England and Canada. We were for the most part pleased with everything. There were a few areas for improvement but overall we had a great time. We stayed the night before the cruise at a hotel in Chelsea and spent the afternoon in Boston. It was a great afternoon and evening! Lots to see and do. The next morning, we took an Uber to the cruise terminal for $21 for DH and myself. Embarkation went very smoothly on Royal Caribbean's part. The port employees, however, were a little rude and very bossy. There was a slight delay in boarding and the port employees were rather stressed. But once we crossed the walkway and stepped onto the ship, everyone was happy and all went well. We had booked an interior stateroom on this trip and I'm glad we did. The majority of this trip was in the fog and the ship was sounding the fog horn every 90 seconds or so. Lots of people complained about hearing that horn all night long and getting very little sleep. We were on deck 7 and never once heard the horn. It was for our safety and while no one plans for that, I was glad to get to each port safely. Food at Windjammer was good. We ate breakfast there every morning, lunch on sea days and we even ate there one night. My biggest complaint was with the dining room. We had My Time dining and it was like chaos every night. We had tried My Time dining last year on Radiance in Alaska and we LOVED it. But on this sailing, it was if they had overbooked the My Time dining room. I made reservations as soon as they were available online for every night. There was not one night when our table was available when we had reserved. And the seating staff were walking around with radios, turned very loudly, to communicate when tables were ready. The waiters seemed to be in a constant state of cleaning off tables instead of waiting on tables. Our waiters were excellent and we were able to keep the same pair for six of the seven nights. But not every table was so fortunate. It was bad enough for us that we changed our next cruise to traditional dining. One night, we had reservations at 7pm and arrived at 6:58. We were told our table wasn't ready and to come back in 20 minutes. The Park Cafe, as always, had excellent sandwiches and pizza. The ports were very nice, but we were surprised at which ones we liked the best. We were prepared to really like Portland and Bar Harbor and didn't have high expectations for St. John and Halifax. Portland was good, but we didn't stay in the city. We rented a car and drove to Kennebunkport and had a great time. Bar Harbor was nice, but not everything we have always heard it would be. It was our least favorite stop. There wasn't much to do in St. John unless you took an excursion out of the city and that's what we did. We went to the Caves and had a blast! But our favorite port, without hesitation was Halifax. There is so much to see and to do. Entertainment was average and we attended one production show and two of the other shows. But the movies shown on the screen at the pool deck were great so we tended to choose that instead of a production show. We didn't use the fitness center or spa on this voyage so I can't speak about those. And it was too cool and foggy to use the pools or hot tubs so I don't know about those either. The ship was probably the cleanest I've been on and this was my 12th or 13th cruise. There was a notice of a Noro virus the week prior to our voyage and I'm sure that's why the ship was so very clean. There were no funny smells in any of the public spaces, bathrooms or hallways. It did appear that there were fewer stateroom attendants than ever. We didn't meet our attendant until half way through the week which has NEVER happened before. There were only 2 room carts on our section of hallway and last year on Radiance we were on the same size hall and there were always 3 or 4 carts. While I don't expect a towel animal every night, we only had two and they were very simple ones, not what I've experienced previously. However, our room was spotless. And we never had to wait for our room to be made on sea days. We would leave for breakfast and when we were back, the room had been cleaned already. I'll take a super clean room over towel animals every day. Disembarkment was the fastest and easiest we've ever experienced. Great job to both the ship and port employees. We had a great time!! The couch in room was worn out to thread baren. Tours were very expensive and little to do in ports without tour. Food was uneatable! No table space in windjammer. Food cold and bad! Don't go. Overall the food was below par.ln the main dining room to add to the poor food we had a table of ten with one server and one backup.i felt the staff were trying their best but throughout the ship there was a noticible lack of staff. I had to chase a cocktail on more than one occasion. The room staff consisted of one young man doing his best. I felt that the cruise line was only interested in their bottom line but at the expense of the passenger . Overall a very poor cruise. Would not recommend it to my worst enemy, Read Less

This cruise was given to my husband and I as a gift . A party of five of us looked so forward to this adventure. Unfortunately it was a disappointment to all of us . The service was terrible and very rude staff that treated you as if they were doing you a huge favor by answering any questions. When we arrived in our cabin there was hair in the sink and pieces of paper on the floor in the bathroom .The sink was cleaned for us but the paper on the bathroom floor remained throughout the whole trip , which indicates to me that floor was never cleaned. The food in the restaurant was plentiful but very little variety most of the food were repeats from the day before and at times tasted very stale. We met several people on the ship about 15 other couples and all of us ended up getting very sick on this cruise. When our party got back into port all were feverish and a lot of coughing . Three of us had to come back to Canada from Boston where this shipped docked and to say the least it was a very uncomfortable drive home. All five of us ended up on antibiotics for some virus that we had and my husband got so ill he ended up on life support for a few days . We are just starting to feel better now, the first time since September 15th 2017. Once we start to feel a lot better the health department in Boston will be contacted. I truly believe that we picked up this virus on this cruise. Read Less

My wife and were traveling with two other couples and have been on other cruises. We had not had the pleasure of being with Royal Caribbean before. We were excited to take this cruise as it contained the area that interested the six of us together. In my experience I noticed the lack of training of the crew in some of the most basic skills I think necessary to operate a successful cruise. This ship was not as clean as I have noticed in the past. If you notice that crew members are walking around trying to avoid cleaning off tables and not picking up stuff off the floor and just not appearing to be conscious of their duties. It appeared to me that even as we had paid the full asking price for the cruise, Royal Caribbean is engaged in extracting every penny it can get from the people on board. A cheap bottle of wine at dinner time will cost you two to three time the amount you would pay at home in the US. Soft drinks are right up there also. It just seems as though after you get on board they are willing extract as much of your money as they can. I go on a cruise to experience something that is different form other vacations and have experienced that on other cruise lines. Will not be returning to Royal Caribbean. Its the little things that set people apart. Read Less

My hubby and I went to Alaska in June of 2004 on Serenade of the Seas. We thought it was a beautiful ship and after 25 other cruises decided to go to Canada/New England on the Serenade. We flew into Boston day of the cruise because motel rooms were so high. The taxi to the port was less than $25.00 and took less than 15 minutes. Because we were platinum, our wait in line was less than 5 minutes and we were quick on board and went to the buffet for lunch. We had an inside cabin which was fine. Plenty of closet space and plenty of drawers. We really prefer anytime dining on other ships but we were told it was full so we had 5:30 dining. The dining room wait staff was good. However, the food was just barely okay. It was not really any good to me. The entertainment was not what we have usually seen on RC. I do like that they had a small movie theather. The Pub where we tried to watch football was awful. You could not watch and listen to your game!!!!!. You had to watch one game and listen to another game!!!! Also, my husband loves to sing karaoke. They had the old books-not karaoke international!!! Really only a few songs he could sing. The ports were amazing. In Portland, we took the lighthouse cruise through Portland Discovery. It was very good, these people also do a trolley tour. In Bar Harbour, we took Oiley's Trolley (located right at the port) very good. In St. John, we just walked around and had lunch. In Halifax, we took the RC tour to Peggy's Cove with a HOHO bus in the afternoon. We ate lunch in port every day where we feasted on Lobster and Clam Chowder. Best part of the trip!! Disembarckment was very easy!! Taxi ride back to the airport. Beautiful leaves at every stop! Read Less

My husband and I just returned from our cruise to Maine and Canada. We're from the Boston area, so we weren't traveling as much for the ports as for the cruise experience. This was our fifth RCI cruise, the second on a Radiance Class ship. We love the moderate size of this class, and we don't need all the "bells and whistles" of the larger, newer ships. We stayed in an ocean-view cabin, feeling that we didn't need a balcony on this cooler itinerary. The cabin was in very good shape, clean and well-kept. Our room attendant Clifton was a charming, attentive young man- very responsive to our needs. We ate in the MDR every evening and were not disappointed. Our waitress Monica was awesome; she paid close attention to each guest, noticing, for example, when one older woman wasn't eating much but being discreet in asking if she felt well. The food was delicious, although we're not "foodies". The Windjammer was crowded on the first day and on sea days, but we were usually able to find seating fairly quickly. The choices didn't change much from day to day. We went to most of the shows and would rate them from outstanding (2 different comedians) to good (staff song and dance presentations) to "meh" (singer headliner). During the day, we enjoyed lots of trivia games; we also played bingo twice (way too expensive!). Other than that, we didn't find too many other activities to interest us. As for ports, we did a local tour of Portland (on a fire engine!), and that was brief but fun. In Bar Harbor, we took Ollie's Trolley up to Cadillac Mountain (beautiful foliage but really chilly!). We found Saint John, NB a tad boring, walking around on our own. Halifax, NS was quite rainy, but we enjoyed their Maritime Museum, a 1-mile walk from the pier. All in all, the ship was everything we wanted for a relaxing week. Read Less

Main reason for choosing this cruise was because it departed and returned to Boston, no airport involved. We have done the Canada New England cruise before which is a lovely cruise at this time of the year This cruise exceeded our expectations. I have no bones about calling myself a "cruise snob", because I only like the newest ships, or so I thought. The Serenade OTS was a perfect ship for us size wise, a little worn, very clean and quite acceptable. This time we chose an OVC because of the time of year. It worked out great. Our cabin was near an elevator and dining room. Went out on our own when ship was in port. Hubby said liked so much and would have no problem sailing on again. We reached " Diamond" status on this cruise and were pleasantly surprised with perks. Will be sailing on the Anthem out of Bayonne in March and are really looking forward to this experience. Embarkation in Boston was a breeze. We were on board within 30 minutes of arriving at the port. The ship however is in sad shape. Filthy windows, stained upholstry in the room and in the common areas. Entertainment was mediocre at best. Food in the main dining room was served cold and extremely salty or totally taste less. We had much better food in the Windjammer than in the main dining room. Didn't want to waste money eating the specialty restaurants if they can't get the main selections correct. The menu in the main dining room has been completely changed. Gone are the wonderful specialty items that made cruising special. Once again we were charged mini bar items after we had left the ship; had to call twice to get the items removed as we never even opened the mini bar door. Still waiting for credit. The best place on the ship was the Diamond Lounge were the service and hostess were wonderful. I will not sail this ship again unless completely overhauled. Read Less

We are a retired couple and this was our first cruise. We chose this one in particular because it was roundtrip from Boston and the ports were of interest to us. We had two days to tour Boston on our own before boarding the ship. Our cabin was ready by 1:00pm and it was kept in immaculate condition throughout our stay. We were impressed with how the clean the entire ship was kept. We were pleased with the quality of the food served on board but felt the food variety and service were definitely lacking. We don't get up early or stay up late so missed the entertainment and activities during those times. We purchased two excursions (Bar Harbor and Halifax) through RC and both ended up being cancelled. We had issues with the medical facility on the ship and would suggest avoiding a visit there unless it's a dire emergency. Communication was very poor during disembarkation. Overall we were very disappointed with service and communication and we don't plan on cruising again! Read Less

Second time we were on this cruise. Enjoyed the ports and embarking process. They were quick and efficient in Boston. Staff pleasant and hard working. Main dining food was good and service was great. Entertainment was ok but we had seen most of the entertainers on prebius cruises and their shows were the same. Cabin attendent was great and tried his best to help with the wet carpet isses (see cabin review). Tendering in Bar Harbor was disorganized and our tour was cut 30 minutes short because we left so late. Halifax was very nice and can be seen without joining an organized tour. Leaves were still green so if you want the vibrant colors, consider a later cruise. Weather was not the best but that was not anyone's fault.
