We were to meet 2 couples from another country and have a celebration sail. First the bad... Unhelpful call center Had a complication pre-cruise. 10-15 calls (on hold 30-50 minutes each time) to courteous but unhelpful call center. Was told continuously to call back and ask for supervisor. I did to no avail. Dysfunctional website Tried solving via email online. Process online had a dead link. So no go. Tried checking in on website. Link inoperable Now the good... Received an email 2 weeks later resolving the main issue (charged $1900 for change in reservation that never happened). Received an email 2 days prior to sailing saying that we had been upgraded to yacht club status with a suite to die for. When we boarded we were amazed. Priority boarding and elevator usage. A butler met us and escorted us to our private yacht club area room. Concierge was exceptionally available and helpful. Lounge area and bar were convenient. Pool area was lovely. Private dining room was beautiful. Food was exceptional. Wait staff friendly and efficient. Would only recommend this line if you can secure yacht club status. Otherwise, public areas and dining areas were very crowded. Many languages spoken so hard to converse with new acquaintances, etc. Don’t know how we got so lucky, but now we’re spoiled! Read Less

We chose this cruiser for the itinerary and the low price which included a basic beverage package, Cabin was dated and the wallpaper worn but the mattress was good, the linens fresh, the plumbing worked and everything was clean. Staff were friendly throughout. Food good with reasonable choice. Excellent al fresco dining aft of the buffet with great views. Entertainment OK for a small ship. Few other activities. Nifty little library with comfy chairs for a quiet read. Good card and game room. Tiny Casino. Hots tubs aft away from the pool area. Good sun loungers with refreshingly little 'hogging' which is endemic on American ships. Food was surprisingly good with excellent soups and good fish and pork selections. A clean and comfy ship without the modern 'bells and whistlers' all of which I can do without. Efficient disembarkation and boarding at ports. No special shuttles but most ports had public transit. Spanish passengers in the main but all crew spoke English and major announcements were in English too. Relaxing, enjoyable and at a great price. Read Less

Embarkation was an experience departing from Cannes, nearest airport Nice cost 60e taxi to get to the port. Then you are put through security checks lots of times off the ship, no seating (I am registered disabled), no shelter from the sun, the temp was 33c the day we travelled. Then unceremoniously put onto a tender to embark. The ship looked really great. We have sailed with MSC 7 times before and have never been disappointed Yes I have sailed before: RCI, Cunard, NCL etc...So I can say that I am more excited by the design and styling of the MSC fleet. Than any other cruise line we have sailed. Every direction you look, you will see vibrant colour and sweeping curves with very intelligently use of coloured lighting to enhance your visual pleasures. The staircases are bejewelled with glass crystals to all the treads. The design of the performance stages in the concierge areas, are servicing the evening with live soothing music from a pianist or a full band. We arrived in our room (invalid) and as expected it was sumptuous, I was well pleased. It had a well fitted bathroom to service my needs. The food as always is superb with loads of variety of all different cultures. I did not use any speciality restaurants, but we did frequent the main dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner, we did do 'tiffin' in mid afternoon for coffee and cake in the buffet! We were never disappointed by the super service we received, we had coffee delivered every morning to the room 0715hrs, they also gave us a warm croissant with it. We never go on the excursions as we have to travel differently so we generally go independently. All the ports in the med are super to visit, there is always something for everyone! Celebrity remains our favourite line despite cruises on P & O, Cunard and Royal Caribbean. We were booked in a Celebrity Suite but as my wife has mobility problems and really needs a walk in shower( not present in Celebrity Suite) we were lucky to get a last minute cancellation for a Royal Suite at greatly reduced price.The Suite is very similar to a Celebrity Suite but with the walk in shower and a bigger balcony with a Jacuzzi - rather grubby and remained unused. There are Sky Suites with disability features but at the stern end of the ship and in any case were unavailable.Perks included unlimited specialty restaurants ( became useful - see below) and a premium drinks package - not much use as my wife doesn't drink but it did mean a much nicer glass of wine with my dinner. The butler Jackie and suite attendant Jose were superb.This is being a bit picky but the suite needs the refurbishment that is coming soon - the table in the room was badly worn and the carpets looking a bit drab. We were in Luminae restaurant where we have dined before. The staff - from maitre'd Claire downwards were excellent and it was not their fault that the food was so disappointing. The menu is very limited and most people were asking for the menu from the MDR. The portions were tiny, especially the vegetables which often arrived tepid. On our last night my steak was of motorway service cafe standard. In fact the best evening meals we had were when we chose to eat upstairs in the Ocean View Restaurant (twice) and made use of our speciality dining perk to eat in the Grill on the Lawn (twice)where the food, especially the steaks, were of the highest standard. We tried Cuisine once but whereas it was previously a great experience we found it gimmicky, again with a very limited menu. We preferred breakfast and lunch in the Ocean Cafe - a bit crowded but much greater choice than in Luminae. All stops pulled out on last day's lunch in the Ocean View - choice of beef,lamb.turkey carvery,barbecued chicken, Indian,Chinese,Mexican, incredible cakes and a white chocolate fountain with fruit kebabs.(to my surprise only gained 5lb over the two weeks. Entertainment not of the highest order. The days of flying out big names are over. A good 60's group on first night(The Overtones) and a Jersey Boys type group(East Coast Boys) on last night - not bad but Franky Valli needn't worry. There were several silent discos held in the main foyer. Silent in name only - any attempt at conversation in Baccios two floors up was almost impossible. Don't know why they don't have these in the Sky Lounge on 14. The place sounded like a rowdy party night on Independance. That probably sounds pompous but Celebrity has always been a bit more sophisticated than Royal Caribbean. Often there are problems with shuttle services at ports for those with mobility scooters but we had excellent service in this respect at La Spezia and Lisbon. We enjoy the quizzes for daytime entertainment and the two entertainment officers who did these - Chantelle and Ryan were great and well liked by the participants. All in all a very enjoyable cruise with just a few grumbles. Read Less

We chose the Divina because it fit our schedule, and also because of the price. We did have some concerns about our first MSC cruise, and were advised by our travel agent to “keep an open mind” – something that we soon came to understand. But despite some minor irritants, the overall cruise experience was nevertheless enjoyable. Embarkation in Marseilles: We chose to take the city bus to the port gate, and then rolled our suitcases to the dock. Although the route is straightforward, it might not be the best choice for the mobility-challenged, as it is a bit of a hike. Because MSC allows passengers to begin their cruise at a number of different Mediterranean ports, there are fewer people to process at each stop. The two-step check-in was painless – we were able to hand over our bags directly to be loaded onto a conveyor belt, then sat in the waiting area for a brief time before our number was called. Once we boarded, though, we had to run a gauntlet of staff members eager to “up sell” passengers with the usual drink, restaurant and spa offers – a practice that continued for the first few days of the cruise. Meals: I realize that food is subjective, and having taken almost a dozen cruises so far, we are usually quite satisfied with the on-board offerings. In terms of variety, quality, and presentation, we felt that the Divina fell short of expectations – although the meals in the main dining room did improve as the week progressed. For example, where other cruise lines offer “made-to-order” egg stations at breakfast, the choice on MSC seems to be from a tray of cooked eggs that looked less than appealing. And after witnessing the chaos in the buffet, we retreated to the Black Crab dining room where both buffet and à la carte breakfast is available during limited hours. We discovered – too late for us, alas – that hamburgers and similar fare are available in the sports bar at lunch. Stateroom: Our 11th deck stateroom (11084) was the highlight of the cruise, mainly because of the deep balcony complete with a lounger. The storage is adequate and the bed is comfortable; about the only quibble would be the small TV; however, we were delighted to discover that CNN was one of the available channels. Service: This is another area where MSC does not seem quite up to par. We did not meet our cabin attendant until the one and only time, half-way through the cruise, when he came to turn down the bed. There was no means to contact him with specific requests. When our toilet tissue supply ran dangerously low and our repeated calls to room service were met with a busy signal, we finally had to take matters into our own hands and proceed to raid a service cart near the other end of the hallway! I am not faulting the housekeeping staff as it appears to be a management issue. And as one other reviewer has mentioned, MSC seems to have done away with facial tissues in the bathroom – not a biggie, but an indication of either cost-cutting or lack of attention to detail. Front desk: I won’t go into detail here, other than to say that the folks at the front desk resolved to our satisfaction an issue relating to a group of young passengers who were the subject of a number of complaints. Itinerary: This cruise was port-intensive, with no sea days, which was just as well considering the number of passengers and their often loutish behavior. The ship was forced to skip Valencia because of an impending storm; when the captain announced - at dinner time – that the closing of the port meant a detour to Barcelona, a loud cheer resounded through the dining room (at least among the English speaking passengers – leaving others with puzzled looks until the announcement was read in one of the three or four remaining languages). Debarkation: This is an area where MSC really shines and a first for us. Passengers were provided with a briefing on the entire process, including how to fill out and attach luggage tags. Upon arrival at the port of Marseilles, passengers were divided into groups according to colors that corresponded to the luggage tags, then escorted to the exit by a crew member at the appropriate time. All things being equal, the cruise was a success. Would we sail MSC again? It will depend on a number of factors, but I think we might consider a different ship and itinerary, as the cruise line does provide good value – as long as one keeps an “open Read Less

We chose this cruise primarily for the itinerary given that the ship called in at Bilbao and Cadiz, the two ports on the itinerary which we had not previously visited. We also liked the idea of re-visiting Lisbon and Cartagena. What is a pity is that the cruise called at Gibraltar rather than either Malaga or Valencia which are far superior ports of call. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Spanish and Portuguese ports. Apart from the itinerary the other plus points of the cruise were the cuisine, which was top notch and the crew with whom we came into contact. Our stateroom attendant, Ashell, our waiters, Bernard and Mugi, and our sommelier, Richard were all excellent. The downsides were the entertainment in the theatre, which is the worst we have experienced on any cruise (we are nearing 20) and the choice of music in the public areas which failed totally to take account of the age distribution of the guests, which in the main was 60+. Celebrity is our cruise line of choice but there is definitely room for greater awareness of its customers likes and preferences. Read Less

Chose this cruise primarily for the ports of call. Cannot really fault NCL and The Epic at all as everything was excellent for us. The staff,organization,food and entertainment was all first class.We left Barcelona to Naples > Rome > Livorno > Cannes > Palma > Barcelona. All excursions were first class but if you want to really explore then I suggest the full day options.We visited Pompeii,Pisa and Cannes and all were amazing.Embarkation was stress free and easy as was the disembarkation which all went like clockwork. There is an option to self assist with luggage but we chose the colour coded system which allows you to put all your cases outside your room the night before you get off the ship and it was all so easy.We were in stateroom 14141 on the 14th floor and it was also excellent. Great housekeeper in Wilfred and room was kept spotless.Met some really nice passengers from all round the world and everyone was so approachable including all ship management. We paid upfront for the premium drink package and gratuities and it really is worth looking at that option. Definitely would consider NCL and the Epic again. Loved every minute of it. Read Less

This was myself and wife 15th cruise all with Marella and the 4th time on the Dream as it was !! Our favourite ship in the fleet. I’ll keep the review practical many frequent Marbella cruise travellers hopefully get the key points. The positives are its an older ship but has some great venues and bars which makes the personnel touches better than the bigger ships and it proved no different from our previous sailings. The services from the bars and restaurant staff were excellent. The professional entertainment was excellent although some of the best act were too late in the evening. We read on an informative letter in our cabin on arrival that they listen to the cruise feedback reviews. They had decided they would let children use the adult pools which I’m not sure was thought through. We like the lido pool on deck 9 it has a children’s pool but they all used the adult pool. Not supervised by staff and parents and just basic chaos all week. Jumping,pushing,shoving,inflatables the size of a person. Water guns the size of cannons firing all over the deck. We are not stick in the muds we have 3 children who don’t behave in this fashion. Three times we complained to reception and all we got back was they are the same throughout the ship. Ruined the holiday and experience. The sail away party the life and sole of these cruises was ruined by the life safety drill taking place at 10.00 in the evening which is unheard off. The food which was always the stalwart of the Dream has gone backwards!! Repetitive basis offering and the sweet selection was really poor. The Cruise Director spent more time trying to sell upgrades than actually information around the entertainment. The 2 hour flight delay coming and 5 hour delay going back didn’t help either. This is our 2nd Marella cruise this year which hasn’t come anywhere near expectations with delays and standards going backwards.one of the biggest frustrations is trying to get your voice heard. The Tui App on the ship is loaded with questions they want to hear rather than anything they don’t. The questionnaire they send you is just as frustrating and if you criticising too much will not let you complete. Prices going up and standards going down. Read Less

I went on the "glories of Spain and Portugal" itinerary in August. This was my first cruise. The small ship size was great and I got to know the fellow passengers and crew very well. The crew and staff were excellent and very attentive, and I also enjoyed the small group excursions. I really enjoyed the ports and the privileged locations we got to dock at each day. The ship was very clean and nice. If you are looking for high luxury, however, this is probably not the ship for you. Cabins are small and there are no balcony cabins. The ship had a nice family feeling and I felt right at home. The food was good and there were a lot of choices and the staff was accommodating of any dietary restrictions. Everything went smoothly on board. In short if you are looking for a nice ship with amazing staff and an intimate feeling, I would absolutely recommend Variety cruises and the Harmony V. Read Less

Sailed Aug 10 on 9 day western Caribbean cruise from Rome. As a point of reference I’m 73 yrs old and my lady and I have been on several cruises over the years on different cruise lines. Last year we sailed on the Solstice on an Alaska cruise and it was our favorite ship to date. We thoroughly enjoyed the Edge, but also miss some of the niceties offered on other ships. Pluses: • Boarding and exiting the ship was the easiest we’ve ever experienced. From the time our car dropped us off at the curb & a porter took our luggage, with our pre-check in express passes we were in our cabin in less than 10 minutes. Same exiting the ship. Luggage tags were numbered with the bus number to board for the airport. Very quick process. • One advantage of their concierge class is that on “welcome aboard” day you have exclusive access to one of the main dining rooms open for lunch, thus avoiding the crowded buffet. A welcome touch, as long as you board early. It closes at 1:30pm. • We were in concierge class on deck 12 port side near the aft elevators. Great location. We liked our cabin layout, comfortable bed, and really loved the infinite veranda. It makes the room feel larger and provides a better sense of privacy. The window is the full width of the room and the top ½ lowers electrically. You can sit or stand at the open window with no one staring at you from above or below as on a traditional balcony, and it’s quieter. The cabin attendant lowers a shade in the evening which totally blocks morning light if you wish, but we raised the shade and opened the window at night to enjoy the cool ocean air and hear the sounds of the sea. The weather when we sailed was great for this, although I realize that in different weather it could make the room uncomfortable because the A/C doesn’t run with the window open. • Dining - We liked the concept of four main dining rooms. Each has different décor and offers a bit of variety, although most of the menu is the same in each, with a few choices unique to the theme of each restaurant. We prefer select dining and just go down to dinner when we’re ready, and request a table for two. We never encountered a long wait. There are several extra cost restaurants available. We had dinner at the Petite Chef venue at Le Grand Bistro. My lady thoroughly enjoyed it, and the food was good also, although they did have to re-do my steak which came out very rare when I ordered med rare. We also had lunch there one day. Very nice menu and the food was distinctly better than what was served in the main dining rooms. We also had lunch one day at Raw on Five. We felt the offerings were OK, but not as good as the sushi places we have at home. We purchase the Go Best package with the premium beverage plan. On the Solstice you must present your cruise card(s) each time to order each glass of wine at the restaurants. On the Edge you show it just once and the wine steward returns to keep your glasses filled, an appreciated courtesy. • The buffet was nicely laid out with adequate seating available and the food was pretty good. Waiters come by frequently and offer to bring you bottled water, more coffee or alcoholic beverages. There is nice pizza station at the back area and also a small bar there. One day I complained to the bartender there that he didn’t have the premium wine we preferred. As I went back to my table a supervisor appeared and offered to bring us the wine I wanted. Nice touch. • Before we sailed I was dubious about the Eden lounge and the Edenist thing, but I found the lounge to be excellent. Beautiful layout, quiet and comforting to visit through the day and into the night, with easy listening music or soloist playing as you look out to the ocean at the rear of the ship. The Edenists appear briefly at dinner time at the Eden specialty restaurant. We dined there one night and felt the experience was exceptional, and the best we had on the ship. It was quiet and intimate, with personalized service. A four course meal is presented with two choices for each course. As a couple we each selected different choices and shared. The presentation is unique and enjoyable. The Edenists are a mythical creation of performance art, a bit strange but fun. They do a show in the later evening which was not to my taste however. Cirque du Soleil meets Star Wars. Just too weird for an old guy. • The Magic Carpet is fun. We went there a couple of times to enjoy a drink at the bar and lounge. It’s cantilevered out from the side of the ship and having the open ocean around you on three sides is nice. When it is lowered down for tendering it becomes a more friendly way to get on and off the ship. • I liked the new smart phone app that is new on the Edge. You can use it even if you haven’t signed up for the WiFi package. You can make reservations with it, see the deck plans and cruise information, and even set the lights & air conditioning in your cabin and open you cabin door. Negatives: • We enjoyed the Sky Lounge on the Solstice, which looks out to the front of the ship. On the Edge the entire front of the ship is sequestered for Suite passengers. They have their own pool, retreat area, bar and restaurant. The rest of the “lower element” must be content in the “back of the bus” so to speak. • Not enough shade. Aft on the top deck there is a really nice Rooftop Garden area and an adjoining specialty restaurant Rooftop Garden Grill. This is a beautiful area but we couldn’t use it most of the day because there are no shaded areas. Not everyone is comfortable sitting in direct sun in the hot summer. The same is true at the Sunset Bar around the corner at the rear of the ship. We felt the Sunset Bar on the Solstice was a nicer design, more inviting. The design on the Edge feels like a sterile plastic afterthought stuck in the rear of the ship. • Too crowded. The Edge has about the same number of passengers as the Solstice but it feels much more crowded. It’s really not a ship designed for kids, but there were lots of noisy kids on board our cruise. On an “at sea” day we went up to the pool deck at about 10:30 in the morning and there wasn’t a single lounge chair open anywhere near the pool or even in the Solarium. • The Grand Plaza and martini bar on this ship is a large space open to surrounding decks above. It is very noisy with either bands or recorded music and the loudness migrates up to the specialty restaurants on the decks above. In the evenings it is crowded and challenging to be comfortable, with kids all around, even by the bar. Many people come in casual clothing. The atmosphere is just not very inviting, and lacks the quiet sophistication of the one found on the Solstice. • On the Solstice, the concierge’s desk is located right in the concierge area of the ship. He gives you his card with phone number and you can walk over to see him or just call him on the phone. He was very helpful and accessible. There isn’t a way to easily contact the concierge on the Edge. No direct phone nbr and you have to walk way down to deck 5 at the front of the ship before the theater entrance to his small office. It’s as though they want to keep his existence as secret. • We’re not into a lot of the activities available but did go to two of the shows in the theater. Found them creative and unique but not particularly to our taste. In summary, we spoke with many other passengers during the cruise and found a recurring theme. People on their first cruise, or who hadn’t cruised often, love the Edge. Passengers who are veteran cruisers almost all said they wouldn’t sail on this ship again. It has the feel of a large resort hotel rather than the nautical allure and intimacy of other more traditional ships this size. As beautiful and modern as it is it lacks a “comfy cozy” feel many sophisticated travelers expect in a cruise ship. This is a comparatively expensive ship to sail on, so it’s reasonable to expect very good service, food, etc. We felt the service was very good but the food could have been better, generally speaking. It’s nice, as older travelers, that the Edge holds only about 2800 passengers. We’ve been on bigger ships and didn’t like them at all. We’re not into water slides or rock climbing and huge crowds. It would seem the Edge is not suited for families with kids, but we were disappointed to see so many on this cruise. Read Less

We were three adults all over fifty years of age. We each had a stateroom to ourselves. There are no complaints about the ship and its amenities. It is beautiful and impressive. The food was enjoyable. Some of my gripes: 1. The cruise was sold to us as a mainly adults cruse. There appeared to be more children on the ship than adults. I have four children of my own, so I know what it is like to be around kids and infants. For reasons unknown to me, management placed three children in a room next to the one used by me. They screamed and shouted on a daily basis at all hours of the day. I complained to management on three occasions but this was to no avail. These kids clearly loved jumping and playing in their room. Coupled with the excessive noise I felt and heard constant dull metal thumps. 2. The advertising spin for the ship and the cruise was that it would be luxurious. If you are against standing in line to get your food or being in something akin to a soup kitchen, this ship and cruise are not for you. 3. The prices for additional food and drinks are excessive. The ship is geared to make as much profit as it can on its guests. The ship has a captive customer and whatever you have to pay, you must add an additional 20% service charge to the bill even if you take something out of the cabin bar fridge. As an example, soft drinks are US$3.90 a cappuccino is over US$4. 4. The excursions are unreasonably priced. The ship cancels booked excursions when it does not have enough guests. They apologize to those who they have inconvenienced but it appears that the profit on the excursion is more important than the guest's enjoyment. There are more gripes but I will not bother you with it. I will not recommend this cruise. Read Less

We don’t normally cruise during school holidays but did so after making a fairly late booking following the lifting of travel restrictions for my wife following a medical condition. I have to say, we won’t be booking in school holidays again. The ship was very crowded with I believe record numbers on board and it did have a detrimental effect in some areas, especially if you wanted a sunbed, and you didn’t mind being packed like sardines. Contrary to some reviews, we didn’t experience any problems with the youngsters except for the odd shenanagins with the lifts, if fact the ones we spoke to were very polite. We found the food onboard perfectly fine, with a huge selection in the buffet. The main dining room was ok, the portions were not too big, but you could always ask for more. We found drinks very expensive, but luckily for us we had an inclusive drinks package with our booking which saved us money big time. Entertainment was hit & miss, they had some good comedians, Jon Courtney being the highlight, but they had a truly dreadful one, I think he had come straight from the Apollo Theatre, and one of a long line of unfunny comedians of that ilk. Excursions were truly expensive, our advice is to do your own thing, you will save pounds. As for the shuttle prices, they really are a rip off. Having said all that, we enjoyed our cruise, our cabin was fine and the staff are brilliant. Embarkation and disembarkation are the best we have encountered on any cruise line. Went on Discovery 2 last year - Eastern Med and loved it so tried Western Med this year. No complaints. Food excellent, staff superb. Relaxed cruise and would recommend. Entertainment hit and miss. Loved the comedian but didn't like the crew's musical. Squid and Anchor pub was a popular venue, got quite busy. Personally would only cruise for a week. We did cruise and stay and stayed in Sorrento after the cruise which was fab. Had an outside cabin with a window and it was more than adequate, not luxurious but you don't spend much time in your cabin. Discovery and Explorer quite similar. More restaurants on Explorer but missing the lovely Atrium on the Discovery. Swings and roundabouts really. If I had to pick a negative it would only be in relation to the ports on this cruise. They were all commercial ports and if you didn't choose to do the excursions on offer which were quite expensive you had to get a bus or taxi to get off the port. The ports of call we visited in the eastern med, we could just walk off the ship into town. Everyone - guests and crew were so friendly and if you had a problem they would sort it out for you. Wouldn't hesitate to book another Marella cruise. If you want a 'posh' cruise and wear your evening gowns and tuxedos every night this is probably not for you. We loved it! Read Less

I chose this holiday to take all my family who live in different parts of Europe on a cruise where we could all be together. The poor things outweighed the pluses , I would never do it again. The pools were inadequate, too many people using a small area . many of the guests refused to let their children use them. This should have been the centre stage for the trip but it wasn't comfortable. Always packed and difficult to find chairs. No crew bothering to see who were not using the beds occupied all day with towels which weren't used. The cabins were Ok but that's all. Food was fine, no complaints. Embarkation and disembarkation excellent. Entertainment good.The problem with this ship is that the on deck facilities aren't sufficient for the number of passengers. Had that been better then it would have made a huge difference to our holiday. We also had some issues relating to NCL general terms and conditions and found their later dealing with our complaint unsatisfactory. There were always long queues at guest relations desk so if you needed the simplest of requests or answers you had to expect a long wait. NCL should invest in better on deck facilities and give their Guest relations teams both on board and in London better training in customer service. We did the Norwegian Epic cruise out of Barcelona, Spain on July 14 - July 21, 2019. To be honest, I was very apprehensive about the cruise after reading so many negative reviews on cruise critic BUT it was WONDERFUL!!! In fact, I joined cruise critics roll call and was able to gain a lot of insight from other travelers on what to do and things that others had learned. We are avid cruisers and Disney is one of our favorite cruise lines but we decided to do Norwegian because of the price. I will attempt to give an overview. We boarded in Barcelona. We took a cab from the airport to the port. It was a fixed price of 36 or 39 euros. Check in was so smooth and fast! I did the on-line check in prior to us leaving and it was one of the fastest check-ins that I have experienced. The ship was very well maintained. I did not see dirty or stained areas. We were on floor 8 in a balcony cabin. I did not care for the lay out of the room but we only got ready and slept in the room. There were 3 of us in our cabin. I did not like the frosted shower-like doors for the toilet area but we lived with it. Once again, we just got ready and slept in the room. The dining was amazing. We had 3 free specialty dinings (for the first 2 of us) and we paid for my daughter. We ate at La Cucina, Le Bistro, and Cagney's. The food and service was superb. This was our first time to ever do any extra charge restaurants because I think you already have so much on a cruise, but since it was free, we tried it. I will say we loved it!! You felt so special, at ease and relaxed and knew you had one-on-one service. BUT, there free dining is also amazing. There is such a variety of foods. The buffet had a different them each night. (Mexican, Mediterranean, Grilled, Italian and I don't remember the others.) Also, there was a person making fresh, made to order crepes at the buffet. That may have been all nights but I used it Tuesday - Thursday for sure. Everyone in the dining rooms and dining areas were very attentive. The dining rooms and buffet areas were beautiful. They all had windows where you could look out and view the water. The front dining room at The Garden Cafe buffet was beautiful and all windows. LOVELY VIEWS!! The food reminded me of when we first started cruising 20+ years ago and that was what you looked forward to. I cannot give an honest opinion of the activities because we were off the ship each day in port and by the time we came back, got ready, and ate, we were ready to crash for the night. We did go to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, but left. I knew it would have drag queens but there were too many other things that I felt were inappropriate and were not for me nor my family. We did see a comedian and he was funny but they really needed to use a larger venue because we were packed into one of the areas and there was standing room only. We missed Burn the Floor and we choose not to do Cirque Dreams because we did not want to pay for a show. We saw the Beatles Mania show and it was enjoyable. Our cabin steward was very nice and always checking on us. He checked with us each day to see if everything was OK and if there was anything that we needed. I did want extra blankets and when we got back to the room, they were on our bed. Everyone on the ship, from guest services to the gift shops, seemed pleasant and friendly. I know some people asked about laundry and ironing of clothes. They have a laundry service on the boat but of course it is high. On Wednesday, there was a flyer in the room that advertised that you could fill a bag with clothes and they would be washed and returned to you by Friday. The cost was $19.95. We did fill a bag with our underclothes and tshirts and they were washed and back in the room by Friday evening--all for $19.95 You do have to write the special or promotion on the bag of laundry in order to receive it. I will try to give a run down of what we did each day. We did not book any excursions through Norwegian. We used outside tour companies that were less expensive and fewer people. I gave them a poor on shore excursions because of the prices. I learned this a few years ago when we did a cruise around the Greek Isles. Day 1, we embarked on Sunday in Barcelona and Day 2, Monday was a day at sea. Thank goodness for that!! We were exhausted after our flight from the US. We slept in and just roamed around a little on Monday. Every other day, you are at a port. The day of rest helped us--- I don't know if I could have gotten on in Civitavecchia and then had to do ports with no rest, if I could have made it! Day 3 - Tuesday was Naples Italy. We used Italy Tours and booked Pompeii, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast. There were 14 people in our van and it was wonderful. Our driver met us at the port, we loaded into the van and started our tour. We got back to Naples about 1 1/2 hours before we had to be on board, so there was time to go into Naples if you wanted. Day 4 - Civitavecchia (Rome)--We did not book a tour because we visited Rome for several days in 2016 so we did our own thing. We got off the ship and there were many people at the port where you could book tours or take a bus to Rome. We got on one of the Smart Tours buses and once the bus was full, they brought you to Rome. You were dropped off at a point near the Vatican and then they gave you a time to be back and the bus picked you back up at the same spot and brought you back to Civitavecchia to board the ship. The cost was 23 or 25 euros per person and you had to pay cash. They did not accept credit cards. When we got on the bus, it was almost full so we only had to sit about 15 minutes before leaving. From what I heard, some people sat on the bus almost 1 hour waiting for others to get off the ship and board. You may want to keep that in mind. Italy Tours had some small group tours for Rome but since we had spent several days here a few years ago, we just walked and revisited some of our favorite things and took our own tour. :) We stayed far away from the Vatican that day because it was Wednesday and the Pope was doing mass so it was VERY CROWDED. Make sure to get gelato. This will help cool you off and Rome gelato is so very good. Day 5 - Livorno - We did a small group tour with Italy Tours. There were 7 of us in our group plus the driver. We did the tour called the Best of Florence and Pisa. Our driver met us at the small port (it was very easy to find him) and we went to Pisa first and then to Florence. We got to Pisa by 8:15 and the first group allowed to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa is not until 9:00 so we were able to get our tickets and be in the first group to climb the tower. Walking and viewing the grounds was great! It was a highlight for us to be able to climb to the top of the tower. After doing this, I would suggest being in the beginning groups. The lines get longer as the day goes on and it gets HOTTER!! Also, you could not bring any bags in the tower. You had to lock purses and backpacks up in a secure area before climbing the tower. We then went to Florence and met up with a guide and were put with some other group for this guide. Florence was beautiful and even with the other group, we were still only 15 and our guide. Our tour company offered to add the skip the line tickets, which we purchased, and went to the academia to see the original David. The additional group of people that we joined up with in Florence did have an elderly lady who had trouble walking and keeping up and those persons eventually left the tour and said they would go on their own. Florence is an amazing city--the bridge with the shops on it is just amazing. Day 6 - Cannes - We did not do a tour with an outside company (but if you start early enough, you should be able to). You have to tender into Cannes. Make sure to book your tender early and don't waste 1/2 day on the ship waiting to catch a tender to get off. Once in Cannes, we went to Monaco. You can take a train from Cannes to Monaco and it is about a 50 minute ride. If you decide to do this on your own, here are a few tips that we learned the hard way! :) To get to the train station, once you walk out of the port area and get to the main road, take a right. When you get to the Cannes tourism office (it is a big mirrored building on the right), take a left onto the street that is across from the tourism office. You will walk several blocks down that road and then you will see the train/bus station. If in doubt, ASK. Once inside, DO NOT try to use the kiosk to buy your own tickets. Go in the station and go to the ticket office to the left (it is inside more glass doors and it has a working AC). Once inside, pull a number ticket and wait for your number to come up and then ask the agent to help you buy a ticket to Monaco. It was 36 euros for all 3 of us. BEFORE you board the train to Monaco/Nice, make sure you find the yellow VALIDATION machine and validate your ticket. I think you get in major trouble if you do not validate your ticket before boarding. If you don't see a machine, ask someone where to validate the ticket and they will show you. Take the train to Monaco and then follow the signs (brown, historical) to the palace. There are lots of things to see and quaint little shops near that area. We did not go to the casino but that is also available. When you are ready to leave Monaco, you can get off the train in Nice on the way back to Cannes and do some wandering there. We did not do this because we lost time trying to find the train station and getting the wrong kind of ticket and having to switch out. If you have plenty of time, others say this is wonderful to do. We spent all of our time looking around Monaco and then we were having to sprint to make it back to the ship!! Day 7 - Palma De Mallorca - To be honest, when we booked this trip, I had never even heard of this place. I was thinking in my mind that we would probably be so tired from our other tours and adventures, we could just stay on the ship. DON'T STAY ON THE SHIP!!! This place is beautiful. It is the largest island in all of Spain. Once again, we did not book any tour. There are shuttle buses that take you from the port to the town center. BOOK YOUR SHUTTLE RIDE BEFORE SATURDAY MORNING. The shuttle ride from the ship to town is $15 per person. Book your shuttle Thursday night or Friday. If not, you will spend a long time in line on Saturday morning to buy a shuttle ticket. For those who do book their shuttle ticket prior to Saturday morning--when you get off the ship and you see a LONG line of people that look like they are waiting to get on a shuttle, do not go to the end of the line and get in line. These are the people who are waiting to purchase their shuttle ride. Let someone know that you already purchased your shuttle ticket, and they will tell you to go straight to the shuttle bus. Meaning, you will by-pass this long line of people who did not pre-purchase. Once you ride the shuttle, it will bring you into town near the church. There is a hop-on hop off bus tour you can buy here that will bring you around the entire island. I think the HOHO bus tour was 18 euros per person. This island has many sights to see and some amazing shopping. It is beautiful and I think it would be a great place to visit on a future vacation. Once again, this was an AMAZING CRUISE, with amazing food and ports of call. For all of those who are concerned because of the negative reviews, my advice would be to ignore them and go expecting a great time and have an awesome vacation. We loved it and will definitely be trying more Norwegian cruises. Read Less

My wife, her sister and husband and I spent 12 days on the Veendam stopping at 10 ports in route from Venice to Barcelona. This was our second cruise on the Veendam, and our 13th cruise across five different cruise lines. We had an ocean view cabin on deck six. This deck had the walk around encircling the boat, and our cabin was the last cabin at the aft end with a door to the outside deck just around the corner. Great for walking and lunging right outside our cabin. Our window was exposed to the deck outside, however the reflective glass prevented anyone from looking in. Things we enjoyed: the Lido buffet now has about eight hand washing stations. Stick your hands in and about 15 seconds later they’re washed! Outstanding library. Great gym. Pastries and breads were always wonderful. The main dining room consistently had very tasty meals, especially the fish. Things that were a bit disappointing: ice tea and lemonade were no longer dispensed from machines. Instead they were served from pitchers, a little different but we got used to it. Seems that the fresh squeezed OJ machine is a thing of the past. OJ was inconsistent from overly sweet to diluted. No fridge in the cabin. The HA website states that the Veendam is one of three HA ships to have self serve laundry. But the washers/dryers were removed some time ago. So our plan to bring limited changes of clothing resulted in numerous hand washing in the sink. Ports: three lousy ports - Sarende, Toulon and Sete. Great ports were Venice, Dubrovnik, Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Entertainment: was so so. Wonderful pianist (Naomi Edemariam) and Irish flutist. Ok illusionist. No comedians! Very odd. Veendam singers and dancers were OK. Still a five star cruise it’s the positives far outweighing the negatives. Read Less

We were a group of four - a 50+ couple travelling with our 14 year old son and my 80+ mother (with limited mobility). We selected two, back to back 7 day cruises making a figure 8 from Palma de Mallorca around Portugal, Spain, Italy and Southern France. We chose the ship and Marella (Tui) because it went where we wanted to go when we were able to go - we haven’t cruised with Marella before. First - some shout outs to the exceptional service from our cabin staff - led by Faiden - who looked after us all with great care throughout our fortnight. We particularly enjoyed the e-bike excursions led by Niko and Ashleigh - they led us through the sights and the beaches of Portimao, Corsica and St Raphael. We also used some of the coach based excursions- which were comfortable and as expected. We appreciated the peace of mind of all inclusive drinks - the upgrade was not necessary- and saw no evidence of it being abused by our fellow passengers. We were keen patrons of the coffee port, where we always enjoyed friendly service from Tamara. We ended up consistently using the Islands buffet for meals, for the pure convenience and because we tended to be earlier to rise and to bed than most, so that we tended to want our meals earlier than the other restaurants opened. We had breakfast a couple of times in the waiter service 47 degrees dining room - and it was a better experience. Islands certainly has a variety of food, but it has to be said that some of it was not very tasty - which is probably an inevitable consequence of the cooking methods required to produce food on that scale. Nonetheless we opted for convenience and there was usually something memorable on our plate each night. We frequently used the gym and adjoining spa/sauna services which were well equipped and set up. We preferred the Glass house indoor pool area which was quieter and cooler than the main pool area. In summary, the cruise delivered the experience we had hoped for with some of the staff making it that little bit better than we had expected. Read Less

Previously sailed on Spirit so layout of ship identical. Seemed like the ship was shaking herself to bits. Vibration from engines was constant and on every deck and location of the ship. Last night in port I was unable to sleep because of the vibrations. Celebration needs to be retired. Staff are all excellent and food of a high standard particularly the Meridian restaurant. Didn't try the speciality restaurants. Lido restaurant always had a good selection of dishes, particularly liked the afternoon tea spread. Excursions were well organised but maybe allow for more free time to explore, find a cafe or W.C. Then hunt for souvenirs. Cabins were cleaned and refreshed regularly and any issues were addressed immediately. For us there were not enough dancing opportunities. Bands good but playing pop classics only suitable for “dad dancing” or as background music. No chance to do any ballroom or Latin dancing. Read Less

There is no doubt Celebrity Edge looks good. All those Kelly Hoppen greys and beiges. But does it feel good? Well not to this seasoned traveller. Celebrity have made a great effort to lower the age demographic of their passengers. They have succeeded - but I think at the expense of the older guest. Take the bars: I want a comfortable lounge to enjoy a drink. The biggest bar is the Martini Bar on Deck 3 but the seating is on the edge of a three-deck high atrium. Yes it looks impressive. But it feels cold and impersonal. The nicest space is the Al Bacio coffee bar lounge on Deck Four. I took to getting a drink from the casino bar (also on deck four) and carryimng it through to the Al Bacio lounge. So I noticed did others. In fact Al Bacio does serve some limited drinks in the evenings and the solution would be to open it as a full bar plus coffee after say 6 o'clock. I and many others in my age group like to hear a pianist or a classical duo. Alas - Edge is an almost non-stop diet of over amplified pop music. Even worse there are designer muzak tapes on a loop in the restaurants - designed presumably by someone who didn't try listening to them every day. The atmosphere on the Magic Carpet - the bit that hangs over the side- was much better. For one thing -- being outside you couldn't hear the music. It is an idyllic place for those balmy evenings in the Med. I got that "all fur coat and no knickers" feel about the Speciality restaurants - especially Eden. It is approached via a dark mirror glass room, negotiating a series of twisted floor-to-ceiling columns and lit only by twinkling ceilng lights. What's that all about? And Aquaclass passengers dining in Blu have to pass through this for every meal. The food itself was good though not exceptional and it certainly wasn't helped by being served by a girl dressed in rags and a man, also in rags, wielding a stick. Adam and Eve? Caliban? Le Petit Chef and friends features overhead projections of animated figures dancing on your plates as they prepare each course. Entertaining - certainly. But sadly the animation food looked a sight better than the food we actually received. Neither restaurant was worth the extra money. On the plus side - the three main non-paying restaurants were all excellent. Great friendly service, a wide choice of dishes all very well presented and tasty. And no gimmicks.The a la carte breakfast in the Cosmopolitan (I think) was particularly enjoyable and a better choice for me than the scrum at the buffet! The cabins are very well designed in general. But I was in a single cabin (and God Bless Celebrity for thinking positively about we solo travellers), Again the Hoppen influence looked good- but there was enough hanging space for clothes but only one shelf (under the safe) and no drawers. What to do with the smalls? And the plus side: The best shower I've ever found on any ship - proper walk-in, no clingy curtains and a powerful spray. Bliss. The single-panel control for everything including the excellent air conditioning, the window and the blinds, was a definite plus and the ability to transform the cabin into an infinity balcony was fun. Other pluses: Embarkation at Civitaveccia was a dream. Almost straight aboard and keys waiting outside the cabins. Disembarkation was equally smooth with lots of staff on hand to guide us all to the correct buses. And as always the biggest plus of all - the cheerful, efficient , friendly staff who are keeping this ship spotlessly clean and who do put the customer first. Especially the younger customer! Chose this cruise because of the ports and the time of year. First three days were excellent then the Norovirus outbreak god out of hand and pools were emptied, buffet was closed, all venues on the ship were single entry with staff enforcing the use of hand sanitisers. Loungers were put away mid afternoon to scrub the decks. Handrails and lift buttons could not be touched. Menus, condiments, etc were removed from the restaurants. Crew were wiping down everything daily with virox. Crew were ignoring the sanitisers. This lasted for the following 11 days. Atmosphere on board was ruined. Compensation from P&O: nothing. Would not sail on this ship again. Entertainment was really good, particularly main theatre. Ports were really interesting and not leaving Barcelona until late night was a bonus. Dress code, however, was not enforced and hygiene standards were poor. Crew attitude was very variable, cabin steward was the exception. Read Less

Have been on 10 Tui cruises in the past, and this cruise is likely to be the last one. The ship is quite old and dated, we knew this as had been on board 3 years ago. The atmosphere on board is good. On arriving in Palma, at the cruise terminal, staff were in short supply, and transfer buses were stacked up waiting to offload passengers. We were the 3rd bus in the queue. It took 1.5 hours to embark the ship. First queue of over 100 people, to obtain labels to attach to your luggage - with only 2 staff members on duty. Labels attached then next long queue to obtain boarding cards and cabin keys - Only 5 members of staff on duty, with an extra desk for passengers who have a disability. Next queue was for the hand luggage scanner. Come on Marella, more staff needed, we had been on the go since 5 am, and could do without such lengthy queues. We prebooked an inside cabin on deck 7, the cabin we had before was booked and we were told the closest cabin was 7070. Cabin small but functional, pillows need replacing. Attempted to go to bed at 11 pm only to find that that we were below the dance floor. The cabin was not sound proofed, could hear the band singing, and dancers sounded like they had boots on. Phoned reception and told that the ship was full! Same again the second evening, complained again to an officer, who wrote a report - no help at all. On the 6th night it was rock n roll night, loud music n dancing right over our heads. Phoned reception, at midnight, and asked someone to come down and listen. Finally got a helpful receptionist, Rose, to do something, and we were given a different cabin on our final night. Not certain why we had 6 nights of being unable to sleep if they had a vacant cabin. In my opinion the quality and choice of food has fallen. Soup usually good. Toast was inedible, due to thin cheap bread. Lunch at Lido - choice of pollock, meat loaf or calves liver at lunch. Have never eaten as many cheese salads. Dinner was hit and miss in Orion, sent back roast beef - which was tough and dry, also chicken breast sent back - again very dry and tasteless. Fresh veg was in short supply, green beans most nights, but did get tinned carrots once. Entertainment was disappointing, and in my opinion it was the poorest we have ever seen. The comedian was very good, but the shows were a let down. It would appear that the entertainment team was made up of dancers, with a lack of stand out singers. The two groups on board were from Indonesia - not the best we have ever heard - they did try hard but sounded quite dated. The saving grace on the ship are the crew, hard working and good humoured, but thin on the ground again. Ports of call, all commercial ports, which you cannot walk through, so have to wait for shuttle buses. Guess Tui find it cheaper to dock in commercial ports. When we arrived at Santa Margherita, we had to use a tender to get ashore. Passengers booking tours get priority, everyone else has to queue up to obtain a ticket with a specific time. This caused mayhem, and many irate passengers. The ship is now all inclusive for every one. The choice of drinks is not as good as in the past. Great Gordon's gin, but you have to pay extra for a can of tonic, or be subjected to flat tonic from an open bottle. Cocktails made from syrup, far too sweet for our taste. If you drink whisky you may strike lucky, as several named brands available, but this is not a drink we like. The house wine is not good, choose wisely - at lunch in the Lido get your wine from the outside bar, as the self service wine indoors was very poor quality. On arrival back into Palma, it was chaos on the dockside. On past cruises luggage has been set out in rows with the coloured tags determining which line your luggage was in. Oh no Tui, you let us down yet again. Luggage was just lined up in no order at all, thousands of suitcases to hunt through to find your case. Have enjoyed many cruises with Tui in the past, but feel that they are now placing profits over the customer experience and will not be using them again. Read Less

We were on a 12 night cruise in the Western Med in an Aquaclass cabin. We were somewhat concerned before we left on this cruise having read a number of reviews talking about how tired the ship looked and indicating the food was so so. This was not our experience. The ship is older but I found it very clean and well maintained. They were repainting large sections of the wooden railings on this voyage. We ate most nights in Blue (never ate in Trellis) and the food was above average and on most nights was excellent. The staff were great. We did have a couple of lunches and a breakfast in the Oceanview Café and we were impressed with the choice and the quality of the freshly prepared pasta and omelettes. Café Al Bacio was great and the Martini Bar was a blast. The staff were very friendly and always helpful. Only our 3rd cruise and all with Celebrity. On our first two cruises we were in suites but we found the Aquaclass passengers we met in Blu a lot friendlier than the suite class guests we met on other cruises. The retreat might be a good enough reason to book a suite on our next cruise. However, we liked Aquaclass and actually preferred the food and atmosphere in Blu as compared to Luminae. Read Less

Where to start: First, we have sailed nineteen times and experienced an array of American AND European cruise products from RCCL, Princess, Costa, P&O, NCL, Holland America etc. The experiences of these diverse products have collectively informed my opinion of our MSC experience. MSC is NOT for the American market share rather, this European line is clearly after the sustainability of the European market share. American products by and large, do not charge a consistently high price for the cruise and then, charge clients for water while on board. Yes... MSC does this. Not even Costa does this. We paid over 3k for our cruise (similar and consistent to what we have paid for with other products like RCCL, Costa, Princess etc.) but while on board the MSC product we were charged for water.... we were amazed, perplexed and terribly disappointed. Its also important to note -what MSC USA sold us was not what we experienced onboard. When we pointed out the discrepancies on board we were told to take it up with MSC USA when we got home. We did, they did nothing to satisfy or settle our issue. We purchased the Fantastica experience, were told drink packages were included - then they somehow were not included. When we argued they were - we were told we had to buy a drink package which we did for our two children (non alcoholic package) and 1 adult alcoholic package. Only to get on board and be told we shouldn't have done that in fact it was included in our package and when we asked to have the initial prepaid packages we purchased refunded they said - sorry it wasn't included... The only thing which we felt was consistent was the inconsistency between what was sold and what we expected to what we actually experienced onboard. Other things we felt were important to note. The excursions - expensive but of little to no substance; again, representing to us an imbalance between what we paid for and what we actually experienced. We purchased several excursions through MSC - and quickly spent MORE TIME transiting to the excursions than we actually did enjoying the place we were visiting. This happend to us in both Arles France and Portofino. In Arles, we spent 3 hours on a bus to experience the town for only an hour. While in Portofino, same things - we paid a fortune to go to Portofino and spent three hours transiting there only to spend an hour IN Portofino... Very little value for money. Similarly, MSC twice docked at a port which they charged a fee to go from the Port facility to the town.... We were left shaking our heads and again, having the experience of other lines, this was an anomaly we felt was important to note for others who are considering this line. The ship itself was clean, comparatively clean to other lines and with cabins which were much larger than the typical stateroom found on other lines. That was about the only two bonuses on this line. Our experience of the ship was in one word -- exhausting. Terribly overcrowded and with clearly overwhelmed staff who continually treated us with discourtesy and disregard. The staff appeared as exhausted of the overcrowded conditions as we were. This was consistent from the bar staff to the dinning staff -- totally overwhelmed and continually discourteous and seemed exhausted..... The common centers on the ship were jammed daily elbow to elbow with people and loud music - wasn't a quiet spot on the ship to be found... ever. The smoking is an experience not commonly found with American products, on European lines - smoking is everywhere and something we found terribly intrusive and distasteful. Imagine placing the ONLY soft serve ice cream station for kids on the ship in the smoking section of the ship... kids actually have to endure cigarette smoke while waiting for their ice cream (which was eventually closed down due to being broken). This careless disregard for children - alone, made us not want to return to this product... ever. We have sailed many ships (19 cruises to date) and several of those other European products. First time we were ever on a ship and product we couldn't wait to leave... first time. The cost of this product comparatively is similar to other lines - RCCL, Princess Holland America - but what you get for your money is wholly inconsistent and as a result, we could not in good conscience recommend this product, especially for families. While MSC is trying desperately to break into the American marketshare, we believe this is going to be extremely difficult as people with experiences such as ours, share our impressions with others. This was an honest and unbiased account of our experience. We hope it is taken seriously so the product may be improved for others going forward. For us, we will not use or recommend this product in the future. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I wanted to experience Europe and to feel safe and grounded while doing that. Maybe I would choose a cruise with less port intense agenda. Getting out every morning and walking for hours on end was too labor intensive for me, but it was still wonderful! Dining was a highlight of my day. I did dinner every evening in the main dining room. It was fun and I looked forward to seeing our waiters and our table mates each evening. I was quite disappointed to learn that surf and turf night is now a thing of the past! I could order lobster if I paid a $29.99 surcharge. Dinners were good but there was not as much variety as I was accustomed to. Majority of the items were offered daily. There would be 1 or 2 new items added per day, but most of the menu remained the same. I booked an ocean view cabin which I would have loved - except the weather did not cooperate. It was cold every day and wet & cold most evenings, so we couldn’t enjoy it at all! The cabin itself was comfortable, spacious and efficient. Read Less
