We chose this cruise for the itinerary (wanted to visit Florence, Rome, Pompeii, and Venice) and time of year (not summer busy season). Oceania turned out to be a great choice. The ship is smaller than most. We never waited long for an elevator and could easily find seating at the pool or in the dining rooms, even though we were told it was fully booked. We enjoyed the 24-hour coffee service in Horizons Lounge. What a great place to watch entry into ports or just relax with a book! This is a VERY port-intensive cruise. Plan on being tired after busy days on shore. We had one scheduled full day of sailing, plus one more because weather prohibited docking at one port. The staff huddled to create activities for the extra sailing day. Embarkation was not as smooth as we hoped it would be. We had significant delays at the airport waiting for another couple and then waiting for the van. Not the best first impression. Re Ports: Monaco - Tender was difficult. Scheduled HOHO tour on my own; can also purchase from bus driver. We rode all the way around before deciding where to stop during second round. Check out side streets near the palace - enjoy gelato. Easy to find the bus, not too busy (but remember we were not there during peak season). Florence - Used an “included” tour for transfer only. You do not need a tour guide. Just download audio file from Rick Steve’s web site (pack headphones) and pre-order tickets to The Accadamia if you want to see The David. Lines to buy tickets are WAY too long. The statue is amazing, esp when compared to unfinished sculptures located in the same room (can even see chisel marks on those). Rome - After MUCH research, I scheduled a private tour with RomeInLimo. This was the ONLY company that said we could see BOTH the interior of the Coliseum and the Vatican. We did both of those and more by having a highly experienced driver and having pre-purchased tickets. Standing in line for ticket purchase would have taken hours. Find out when tickets go on sale for the date you need and mark your calendar. They sell out, even during the non-peak months. Using RomeInLimo was worth every penny! They even have a web site where you can advertise for others to join you (decreases your expense). And use your CruiseCritic Roll Call to share info. Naples/Pompeii - Used an Oceania tour that included tickets, transportation, and a guided tour. Tiring but so interesting. Not recommended if you have problems walking. Probably miserable during hot weather. Kotor - Could not dock due to high winds. Zadar - Oceania provided transportation into town. Sea Organ is unique. Koper - Not our favorite. Could have stayed on the ship. Venice - Oceania excursion that included Murano and gondola ride; quite memorable. Wanted more time in Venice, so took public ferry back to the terminal instead of returning with tour group. Convenient and inexpensive, but be sure you catch the last ferry to avoid $$$$ transportation expense. Oceania staff was very helpful with disembarkation. We bought transfers. As is undoubtedly true with other cruise lines, be sure to READ THE FINE PRINT, especially concerning cancellation of pre-cruise packages. We were unable make the flight due to a medical emergency. In spite of the reason, Oceania would not refund the hotel charge, because the date was too close to our embarkation date. My advice is to schedule such packages on your own. I think the hotel would have credited at least part of the fee if I had booked directly with them. I hope that our travel insurance will cover this, the cost of rebooking flights ($1600), and a tour we missed. Entertainment - Not their strong suit, but usually too tired to attend. Service was OUTSTANDING! Everyone was courteous and helpful. Our flights home were cancelled due to an airline strike, and Oceania made all rebooking arrangements for us. Dining - We went to the buffet most nights. We were surprised to see lobster and grilled shrimp offered every night. Offerings not as extensive as those on larger ships, but we always found menu items we liked. Favorite meal was the Osso Bucco and Tiramisu at Toscanna. Enrichment - I attended the cooking demo. Informative and entertaining! Educational programs re upcoming ports were recorded and could be viewed on tv. Read Less

This was our first ocean cruise on Viking and we definitely would love to do another. The staff and food were amazing. Our room steward, Ferdi, was always friendly and accommodating to any request we had. Loved the small number of passengers, so it was more intimate and as a senior it was nice to have no children. Able to meet new people and saw them many times on the excursions. Our cabin was typical size, but more than adequate. Loved the heated bathroom floors and the easy to use bathroom shower controls. There was always something to do to keep busy if you want or many areas to sit and relax and enjoy the view. Wintergarden area was nice for afternoon tea. Enjoyed watching the movie under the stars on the pool deck with popcorn. The included shore excursions were a good introduction to the various ports. We did go on a few optional excursions as this was our first time in the area. In Barcelona I highly recommend the optional excursion "Gaudi Architecture & La Sagrada Familia". In Rome we did the optional excursion "Sistine Chapel & Vatican City". The entertainment was very good and we were happily surprised to hear the wonderful voice of our cruise director, Heather Clancy. My husband loves astronomy so he was happy to listen to talks by Jim Teslow. Resident historian Michael Cheshire and his wife Wendy are wonderful. Went to a couple of Michael's talks and had breakfast with them a few days. All of the port talks did a great job of describing what we should expect on the next days excursions. Sadly we had some high seas in Marseille so we were unable to take a boat trip on part of our optional excursion to Cassis. Viking gave us a credit to our account to compensate us for missing the boat trip. Due to the high seas we were unable to dock in Monte Carlo, so we had an extra day in Livorno (Florence/Pisa). This allowed us to take an optional tour "Lucca on Your Own". Enjoyed taking a leisurely walk thru this town. Our trip was from 10/20 - 11/1. We had heavy rain at times in Pisa, so that was unpleasant trying to get good photos of the Leaning Tower, but it was OK. The rest of the trip the weather was great. At times the weather was warm enough that the roof was open over the main pool area. Cloudy and about 58° in Venice, but good for site seeing. So happy that we were able to see this beautiful city before it was flooded recently. We are pescatarian (vegetarian but eat fish) and never had a problem finding food to eat. The dinner menu always had vegetarian items at the bottom of the menu. We enjoyed having the included wine with our dinner. As on other cruises we enjoyed the variety of countries represented by the staff. I would suggest that on their name tag you add their country instead of saying Viking. We especially liked the "Green" feature that the ship card had to be inserted in a slot to keep the cabin lights on and once removed the lights would automatically go off after a short period of time. The switches by the head of the bed made it easy to dim the bedside light and turn on the night light for the bathroom. It was great to have free Wi-Fi in the room. The information on the TV was informative and easy to use. Read Less

The ship and staff were great. Food was fantastic and entertainment top notch. J.C. the cruise director was great as was Marc production cast director and the production cast. Room steward Jun was amazing. We received excellent service in all venues. The NCL shore excursions were exactly as described and we'll done. The service desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall, this was our best NCL cruise ever, number 11. Our embarkation was non eventful and we walked right on, our disembarkation was the same. We recommend coming to Venice a few days early to explore the city and take care of any jet lag as there is little down time during the cruise. We feel we got value for our travel dollar. We strongly recommend this itinerary, we are thinking it will change a little next year as the Venice cruise restrictions required the skipping of Motor, but we never missed it because of the superior ship and crew. The ship itself was outstanding, with great amenities. The Gym/ Spa area was outstanding, especially the "Thermal Spa" area. The restaurants were all outstanding and catered to different needs and tastes. An unexpected surprise was the planetarium theatre where we saw a couple of shows about the universe and the aurora. The "common" areas provided space for quiet relaxation and opportunities for your choice of musical interludes. The entertainment selection was excellent, with many different types of music... classical (piano and strings), acoustic guitar, musical themed concerts, rock band. The individual cabins were just right in terms of space and amenities... and the heated floor in the bathroom was a nice touch. Being a smaller ocean cruise ship, all cabins had outside windows and balconies, which made the travelling more interesting. The Viking staff were all excellent! From the Captain to the cabin stewards, everyone had a smile on their face, catered to your every need and made you feel welcome. Awesome photo opportunities! We chose this cruises based on the ports, presuming low season and fewer crowds, and duration (13 days) seemed good. We arrived early and spent four nights in Barcelona prior to embarkation. All the dining choices were excellent. Our stateroom on Deck 8 was a good choice allowing easy access to the Explorer Lounge and walks on the open Deck 8 and sports activities on Deck 9. We spoiled ourselves forever by selecting the Penthouse Junior Suite (PS1). Embarkation and disembarkation were smooth with no complaints. Our PS1 gave us stateroom access early and it was ready with no waiting. The stateroom was outstanding; spacious yet a cozy space, welcoming us after a day busy with excursions. The live music in the Atrium, both piano and strings was always soothing, while choosing a dining option after returning from a shore excursion. The service was outstanding. The attentiveness of all staff and crew never left us wanting or waiting. We enjoyed all our shore excursions, those included and those that were additional. The local guides I would rate as good to great. The only disappointment was bypassing Monaco due to high winds and seas, so we arrived at the next port (Livorno) around noon that day. We loved being able to dock at each port with no tendering (don’t know if that is normal with Viking). I was impressed with the Captain’s skill at unassisted docking at each port. My first ocean cruise and I can say my wife’s and my best ever ocean cruise. We are planning another Viking for 2021, with a river cruise in 2020. Read Less

We chose to travel with Viking because of a positive experience we had on a previous River Cruise. We chose this particular itinerary because of the destination in the Mediterranean. The experience was positive from the time the Viking representatives met us at the Barcelona airport and they dropped us off at the Venice airport. Totally enjoyed everything about the ship, the Captain (got to meet him), the crew, the staff, the accommodations, the service, the food, Viking's attention to detail, the organization/coordination of events, the Spa (my wife), on-board events, the Port-talks, the evening shows, the views from our Veranda, and just EVERYTHING ON BOARD THE SHIP. It felt like we were traveling with Viking family and it was reflected in their faces. It was also very nice not to have adolescents nor a casino on board. A couple of the ground tours may need to be reviewed and tweaked, but these were outside vendors that Viking works with and depends on the particular land tour guide for your group. Would we do this tour again?...YES! Would we travel with Viking to another destination?...YES! We traveled with two friends, who were Viking 1st timers and they are now Viking fans. Continue upholding the Viking principles and keep up the excellent work, Aloha. Read Less

My friends wanted to re-visit Italy, so we looked at different venues and felt that Viking offered the best and most for your money. We had been on 3 Viking River Cruises in the past and knew that they were all first class cruises. We were not disappointed! The Ocean Cruises are great also. The service was excellent. Our dining experience was also great! The food was fabulous, where you were in the Main Dining Room, Word Café, Pool Grill or one of the specialty restaurants. Although the ports were not located walking distance to the ship, a free shuttle was offered to get to some of the towns. We enjoyed all the free tours and also booked 4 of the additional tours. Each had wonderful guides and were very well planned. The veranda stateroom was spacious and very comfortable. The room had a refrigerator that included cokes and snacks that were free. It had fresh water everyday that was also free. We entertained ourselves with shuffleboard in the afternoon. Read Less

I chose this cruise for its amazing itinerary which was going to 3 places I hadn't visited before. Embarkation in Rome was smooth & fast. I had stayed overnight at the Hilton Garden Hotel near the airport so I could take the NCL shuttle to the port & it worked out well. I really liked the hotel which included a nice breakfast, had a free shuttle to the airport & a nice restaurant so I would stay there again. The safety drill was held inside so that was good. I had obstructed oceanview cabin 8558 (easy number to remember) which was in a good location except for one possible negative which was the noise from Bliss could be heard in the cabin but only until 11:00 pm. It was nice to have O'Sheehans just along he hall & the theatre & Bliss just down one flight of stairs. My steward, who left in Valletta, was great & supplied me with lots of towel animals which I'd requested & ice every day. I use the water from the ice bucket to fill my water bottle each day. The meals on the ship were very good. I ate some breakfasts & lunches at O'Sheehans, but mostly used the MDRs , room service breakfast once & the buffet a couple of breakfasts. I like to be served. I preferred the smaller Alizar dining room to the Grand Pacific & asked for seating for 2 in the back part which I find less noisy. The tables were close enough that I could converse with people beside me if they wanted as I was travelling solo. Oh that reminds me there was a hosted solo meeting the 1st 2 nights of the cruise but not after since it was so port intensive. I did meet a couple of ladies who I shared my platinum meals with & attended shows together along with a solo male a few times. One strange thing this cruise was there was never a line at the internet cafe. The man there was helpful so I stopped by a few times. I always get internet as my perk as I travel solo so want to keep in touch with DH back home & post pictures on social media. That brings me to entertainment which was not as good as on other bigger ships I've been on IMO. I enjoy the production numbers but don't care for individual acts like magicians, singers & aerialists. There was no comedy at all on this cruise. The CD Dave & his staff were good. Oh another thing lacking was Dancing with the Stars which is usually such a hoot! There also wasn't much in the way of tv. I enjoyed the shore excursion presentation where Barbie mentionned to go out on deck port side around 8:45pm when leaving Messina to see the volcano erupting. I did & it did about every 6 or so minutes. I enjoyed the trivias except when Geo did them lol, they were too hard. It was fun to watch him leading the exercise class before 9:30 trivia. On the Jade they use the card system for events were you get signatures instead of prizes which you decide at the end depending on how many points you earn. I did buy a couple of FCCs & booked a TA cruise for April 2021, another cruise with an amazing, to me, itinerary. I also bought a couple of photos & liked that this small ship had the folder system so you didn't have to look all over the place for your pictures. This was a very port intensive cruise with only 1 sea day so busy busy! I got a sore throat so took it easy cancelling a couple of shore excursions & not getting off at a couple of places I'd already been to saving myself for the last day when I would visit Cinque Terre on a 9 1/2 hour tour. This is a place I've really wanted to see for ages & finally have! I chose purple luggage tags for disembarking at 9:15 but it was so smooth we got off the ship an hour before! I had purchased a private transfer to Rome airport with a Cruise Critic member & that worked out well. Must shout out to Darla & Rick who ran a really fun & efficient Meet & Greet supplying us with magnets of our trip. She also arranged several private excursions which turned out really nicely. After the cruise I spent one night at Fiumicino AIrport Deluxe 47 B&B which was cheap, offered a breakfast & a low cost shuttle. It was in a residential area & close to some shops so that was nice for finding a pizza place. This was the 1st time I'd had airport lounge access at both Toronto & Rome & was impressed with what they offered even though both were a little hard to find. This was an amazing cruise & I'm so happy I got to do it. Read Less

We chose this cruise primarily for one reason, no young kids, no casinos, no water slides, no discos. Viking is about 1st class cruising without the carnival atmosphere so many of the big ships are into these days. The ship was perfect. Every crew member speaks to you no matter their job or class. The food was excellent and just a wonderful experience in whole. With the smaller ocean ships of Viking you can get into ports that many of the mega ships cannot. We woke up one morning and looked out our window to see Monte Carlo. WOW what a view that left us breathless. Viking has for sure found their niche catering to older adults. We could be walking out on the deck and run upon a crew member doing maintenance. They would always speak to us and that says something about Viking and its training of crew. If you like a circus then maybe another cruise line is best for you. If you like perfection on a ship that is spotless without all the circus atmosphere then Viking is definitely for you as it was for us. Read Less

We were pleasantly surprised with the size and comfort of our cabin. The ship is beautiful and clean and we could always find a quiet place to sit by ourselves and have a glass of wine. We applaud the hand sanitizers and sinks, soap, and towels outside all restaurants. The food and service were excellent in all the restaurants. We went on the galley tour and marvel at the efficiency and cleanliness of the kitchens. We also went on the bridge tour and were amazed to see how the ship is sailed. The excursions were very organized and ran with great precision. The entire staff and crew were always friendly and pleasant, with a smile on their face. We enjoyed sailing on a "smaller" ship and we are now planning a river cruise and possibly another small ship sea cruise with Viking. Read Less

An amazing cruise exposing us to new areas that we definitely want to return to for a longer vacation. The ship, the service, the food and itinerary were just perfect for us. We liked that we were in a different port in a different part of the world every day. We took several ship organized tours which were very well done and provided us with background information on the sites we were visiting. By using the ships tours we always were assured that we would be back in time for the ships departure or if something did happen that the ship would wait on our return. Free style dining was also a hit with us. Being able to dress, go for a drink and enjoy some of the many entertainment venues without worrying about being to dinner at a certain time was great. Some days we toured and had a light lunch and were ready for dinner early and other days we ended up eating after we returned to the ship at 8 or later. All in all this was a great cruise that is at the top of our list of all the cruises we've taken. Read Less

Viking cruises are for adults who want to learn something about the places they visit and don't want to be "nickel and dimed" for every little extra. Embarkation and disembarkation were quick and smooth. With only about 900 passengers, you're never fighting crowds. The service was exceptional on this ship, with very happy crew members. The ports were a good variety of Mediterranean stops. Because there is an included tour at every port, there was always an excellent guide describing the attributes of an area, telling you the best places to shop, and highlighting additional things you can do after the tour was completed. We chose a couple optional tours, such as the Opera at night in Venice, but for the most part, the included tours were enough. The ship is well appointed, with several lounges. The musical entertainment was exceptional. The band and singers were skilled and worked well together. The variety provided was good, with even a talented cruise director performing one night. By the way, the cruise director was the best we've ever had and we've done dozens of cruises. This is not a ship with lots of entertainment venues for youngsters nor a casino. What we enjoyed instead were very interesting lectures by guest speakers who gave us the history of the places we were visiting and many other TED type talks. I loved listening to these. Our veranda stateroom was roomy enough, but could have used more drawer space. Our cabin steward brought us as many extra hangers as we needed. A nice amenity is the free laundry facilities which are quite useful on a 14 day cruise. The fitness center and spa were fabulous. I used the fitness center every morning. It had lots of equipment, was very spacious, with windows looking out to sea. The dressing rooms were large and included were a sauna, cold dip, large vitality pool, hot tub, snow grotto, and steam room. On the last few days at sea, the snow grotto was closed for maintenance. The food was very good and they were very careful to plan for my allergies. We would definitely book a Viking ocean cruise again. Read Less

Our cabin on both ships was fabulous, really roomy and great bathrooms. We loved the selection of dining and ate at The Thomas Kellar when we were able, Could not fault the crew, always very happy and there for our enjoyment, ports and shore excurtions also great. NCL has done it again! Amazing food, and staff! Can’t wait to book again. We had to fly to Rome for this trip so we stayed in Rome afterward. But cruising is so much easier and we stopped in 9 ports in 10 days. The Jade is a medium size ship with enough elevators so that they were never crowded. This ship also has the spinnaker lounge, my favorite place to sit, read, and watch the view. This special lounge located at the top of the ship has been eliminated on the larger ships to make way for more rooms. But without it, there is nowhere else to get these panoramic views but in the buffet place. Casino was fun with great bar service. Won several big wins. Restaurants were all amazing and really cared about you! Unbelievable service and food. Our balcony room was ok and comfy. Amazing bartenders! Fun and quick. Ports of call were in Greece or Italy. Wonderful stops! Taormina in Sicily was our favorite but Mikonos and Santorini were great too. Downsides: ncl excursions are pricey. Did only 3 in 10 days. Some singers/bands put us to sleep with the slow ballads, etc. and rock or lively music started late at night. Especially when we had to meet for an excursion at 7:15 am. No time for shows either. Deal or no deal is a waste. But they make a huge amount of money on it. Overall, a fabulous trip! We will go again for sure. Read Less

The passengers were 95% retirees so the on-ship vibe was relaxed, moderately paced, courteous, and totally pleasant. The entertainment events on board were extraordinarily excellent and varied-/the best we have experienced in seven cruises on a variety of cruise lines. We were amazed several times by how good they were. The production values and talent were memorable. Our balcony stateroom was excellent, clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The food in the main dining and buffet areas was nicely presented, tasty, and varied. We did not do any specialty dining. We especially enjoyed the leisurely breakfasts on the rear open-air deck. The embarkation and debarkation processes in all ports were timely and efficient. Everything was well organized and on time. The ports of call were excellent and varied. We always wanted to cruise the Med so this was our retirement treat. Prior to the cruise we had a great CC rollcall and so we met the night before sailing and forged some good friendships for on board. Embarkation at Barcelona was a breeze. Our room was ready even though it was early. Ate lunch at the dining room - very relaxed start to our cruise. The crew were all amazing - room steward , bar staff and deck attendants. Our cabin was comfortable and clean - great position on Aliso Deck in an inside cabin. Highly recommended. The shows and entertainment were very good - though a couple of nights there was not a lot on. The meals in dining room (we had anytime dining) were always good and we never had to wait for a table- we ate around 6:15. We had two water shuttle stops and they were handled very well and we were off quickly. We took no tours with the ship- we preorganised local operators and shared tours on our roll call. So was Jean Paul at The Restaurant. We used the Explorers’ Lounge a lot and found it so comfortable and the service excellent. We particularly enjoyed the guitarist. When we book another cruise we will use Viking again - smaller ship, no children, no casino, etc. we are considering a river cruise, particularly the Danube. Thanks to the crew of the Viking Star for such a pleasant experience. Read Less

We have received brochures from Viking for many years, for river cruises, most of which went to places we had already visited by land. When this cruise down the Adriatic came through, we chose it to celebrate our Golden Wedding, as a special treat. It could not have been more wonderful. The whole ship was beautifully laid out, with attractive, subtle decoration (not all gold and glitz), it was extremely efficiently run with every procedure going smoothly, and the staff were all fantastic - friendly, helpful and cheerful, even when they had been working all day, and some during the night too while we sailed. All the visits in port were beautifully organised and the guides were good. The crowds in some towns were unfortunate but on board, we did not feel at all crowded, despite there being 1400 people on board. This holiday was way beyond our expectations and we are recommending Viking to all our friends. Another trip may well be in the diary at some stage. Read Less

The Viking Star and crew did not disappoint. It is often said you get what you pay for and Viking stood tall. The crew hospitality was heart warming to say the least, always personalized and always delivered in a jubilant way that is refreshingly uplifting to the spirt after a long day ashore or leaving your cabin for an anticipated dinner experience. The physical appearance of The Star is impressive in it’s absolutely clean environment throughout the ship. This was our second Viking Cruise on The Star, the last being 15 nights out of Barcelona to Bergen in 2018. It was uplifting to see again so many crew members who’s interactions with each other, regardless of status, continue to be seamlessly positive. Five stars to the entertainment on-board. It would be unjust to single anyone out, least I forget to mention someone, from singers to band members all were exceptionally talented. My only (false) negative is that my failure at self discipline led to a few pounds joining us is a testament to the exceptional variety and quality of food and beverage. We look forward to next summer where a Viking River Cruise awaits our discovery and new adventures. Tom & Regina Read Less

I loved everything about the cruise and the ship. The food, accommodations were great. State rooms were a little small but we had a balcony. My disappointed with the cruise line, was there was no Greek food. I feel since it was a cruise thru Greece, they should have had a least one night with Greek food and deserts. I enjoyed myself and liked everything about the cruise. The service was great, the stewards, waiters and waitress, the bartenders . Was surprised that there were no more stores. Liked the sales for the bags and chains. I No enough chairs or lounges at the pool. People left towels and didn't sit there all day. Feel they shoukld take the towels away after 2 hours of a no show, COULD NEVER SIT AT THE POOL. That upset me. But all in all I loved Norwegian Cruise line and will definethly go with them again. The adage, you get what you pay for, certainly applies. A wonderful trip visiting a city of Europe almost every day. While it was difficult (though with some outside excursions) to see a city in one day, you get a feel for it and can return if you are so inclined. We were busy almost every single moment. The walking/bus tours were pretty nice especially because of the added devices that let you hear the leaders story, comments, and descriptions of the city. I learned a lot and saw the most famous of the iconic landmarks . Food was wonderful with a themed food every day corresponding with the city visiting. If you wanted a steak, just ask for it. Tasty and so much better than the usual cruise food. Entertainment was a bit of a let down. The same people did different genre of songs each evening, but we were so tired out that it was just fine. The best feature was the wonderful support staff. You developed a rapport with those you see each day and while they may be friendly just to get your tip, I don't think so. They genuinely seemed to care for your welfare. You treated them right, they returned it - double! Loved our Viking trip and truth be told, won't be going on any other ever again!!!! GREAT JOB! Small ship, great shore excursions. The food venues were fantastic and the entertainment venues were fabulous. I would not way to be on a larger ship, it would be too crowded. We loved the Barcelona excursion of Gaudi Architecture. Monaco was impressive. We loved Pisa and Lucca. Rome is indescribable. The Amalfi Coast was beyond words. Being on the edge of a cliff is breathtaking. We saw the Stromboli volcano erupting was a once in a lifetime occurrence. Who sees that in their lifetime? The day at sea was very relaxing no. We got to experience parts of the ship we had not yet seen. We experienced the spa as well as Manfredi’s restaurant. Corfu Greece was another world. Then we visited Dabrovnik, Croatia which was a wonder. Split was fabulous with the Cetina River Cruise. Then, entering Venice was the highlight of the trip! Cruising past the Grand Canal was the best! The crew of Viking Star was the best! Read Less
